There are many reasons why the US mineral and primary metals industry is in its present state. Undoubtedly, a flood of imported goods in all sectors is playing a major role in the plight of our raw materials industry. Domestic industry is becoming increasingly aware of the importance of its international competitiveness. And we are beginning to wonder what is happening to our technological edge. A number of factors affect the international competitiveness. Engineers cannot do much about some of these factors - labor costs, tax policy, government relations, interest rates, dollar strength, and labor-management relations. Something can be done about technology, however. Some say technology is so easily transferable today. But I would like to believe that we have the ability to apply it better than others. Not too many years ago, "made in Japan" meant cheap and shoddy products. Today, Japan has completely changed its image. The US is beginning to feel the threat from Japan's low-cost, defect-free products with dependable delivery. With worldwide recession and the strength of the dollar, we were shocked at the sudden weakness that developed in America's industries, not only in the international market, but domestically as well. What went wrong and what can we do about it? Senior executives from 300 large American manufacturing companies were surveyed. These executives believe US companies must: • invest in more efficient plants and equipment (27%); • invest in more research and development (23%); • improve the quality of service to customers (23%); and • adopt more aggressive marketing tactics and strategies (14%). Are we not doing enough research? The US has nearly four times as many people engaged in research and spends four times as much for research as Japan (Fig. 1). There is little doubt about the excellence of the US performance in basic science as indicated by the number of Nobel prize recipients. Japan has produced only four winners since World War II. Look at technology trade of five countries (Fig. 2). Again, US performance has been remarkable. An interesting observation here, is that the United Kingdom, another country with economic woes, is also in the black, West Germany and Japan, both with trade surpluses, are net technology importers. It is apparent that the US' performance in the commercialization of new knowledge is much more in question. Japan had $50 billion of trade surpluses with the US last year, which led to some friction between Washington, DC and Tokyo. Comparing the technology trade of Japan and the US in more detail, Japan imports disproportionately large amounts of technology from the US and Europe. This data is rather old, 1978, but the general trend is not too different even today. It is generally believed that scientific research leads to innovative technology, then to economic payoff. But, after seeing the current technological challenge by Japan, we are forced to change this traditional view. Investment in research may eventually lead to economic payoff, but not directly. There is a middle ground between new knowledge and its commercialization. This is an area where the Japanese have been successful. Until the 1970s, many western companies licensed patents to Japan for quick profits. But, in recent years, these companies have become more discrete about the terms of technological transfer. As a result, a number of scientists and engineers are expressing deep concern over the future of technological developments in Japan. Iron ore pellets made from concentrates produced from low grade iron ores are the primary iron bearing feedstock for iron making in North American blast furnaces. Steelmakers are demanding increasingly higher quality to provide for improved blast furnace productivity, efficiency, product quality and environmental compliance. Unfortunately, this higher quality iron ore product must be produced from the vast deposits of low grade iron ores that are becoming increasingly poorer in quality with regard to mineral liberation and ease of concentration. Since some of these low grade iron ores require grinding to as fine as 90% -500 mesh (25 microns) for liberation and since more of the silicious gangue and other minor undesirable constituents must be removed to provide the higher quality, we have come to depend on flotation to do the added work. Flotation technology and other preflotation unit operations must improve to meet these increasing demands. In many cases, flotation equipment, reagents and circuit operating performance have improved little during the last two to three decades. Mechanical flotation cells have grown from 14 cubic meters (500 cubic feet) to over 84 cubic meters (3000 cubic feet) to help reduce capital and operating costs; however, flotation metallurgical performance has not improved, Column flotation has only recently shown promise in improving metallurgical performance for iron ore rougher flotation. Previous column flotation success was mainly in scavenger and cleaner flotation steps for treating minerals other than iron ore. Although some new flotation chemicals have been developed for removal of silica and other minor constituents under widely varying mineralogical scenarios, recovery of iron mineral has not improved. The operation and control of flotation circuits have become more challenging because of the increasing workload on flotation. Better sensing, process control and operation of flotation circuits are essential as we go forward. Iron ore upgrading by flotation can be classified into either anionic or cationic methods. Anionic flotation of either iron oxide or silicious gangue is accomplished by collector type, pH control and selective chemical activation . Similarly, cationic flotation of silica or iron oxides is accomplished by collector type, activation and/or pH control. Removal of other minor constituents is achieved by using specialty chemicals under controlled conditions for preflotation, co-flotation or post flotation steps. Generally, anionic flotation is used for floating cleanly liberating crystalline oxidized iron ores such as hematite, specularite and martite. Earthy and hydrated oxides such as hematite and geothite can be upgraded with either anionic or cationic collectors after controlled dispersion of slimes or prior removal of slimes. Anionic flotation of silicious waste can be achieved by calcium activation of silica. For magnetic iron ores small amounts of locked silica particles (middlings) can be removed by cationic silica flotation, which is the only method in commercial use in North America today. Historically the efficiency of these iron ore flotation processes has been restricted by the loss of fine iron particles (minus 500 mesh) to the tailings product. New technology is required to overcome this loss and improve overall flotation performance. Development of technology for more selective separation of silica and other minor undesirable constituents from iron ore will provide both quality and cost benefits to the iron and steel producers. Development of future iron ore production in North America will face stiffer technical challenges. These new and undeveloped iron ore deposits are largely oxidized (non-magnetic) and by nature contain more slimes and other undesirable constituents. Unless other new technology evolves, flotation will be the major treatment process required to upgrade these difficult low grade iron ores.

"Trace element analysis of placer gold can be used as a valuable exploration tool in order to determine the original deposit source and locating lode gold deposits. Placer gold collected from multiple districts in New Mexico and Alaska, coupled with a broad database of previously analyzed placer gold samples indicate correlations between chemical signatures (especially gold, silver, and copper) and type of deposits (i.e., Au-rich copper porphyry deposits, Au porphyry deposits, and epithermal deposits). By completing a chemical analysis and determining the particle morphology of placer gold collected from these districts using an electron microprobe, patterns in the chemical signatures from each location can be used to examine chemical variability (1) within the individual placer gold particles, (2) within the same district and (3) among different districts. INTRODUCTION Although there are numerous past studies on the chemical composition of placer gold by Newberry et al. (1997), Melchiorre (2001, 2009), Townley et al. (2003), and McLemore et al. (2014), the gold analyzed tends to be collected from one or few specific districts. Rarely do those studies compare compositional results to additional districts, or elaborate on the correlation between the elemental composition of the placer gold and the original deposit source for the respective districts. This research analyzes the composition of placer gold from multiple districts and within the same district. There are a number of elements, which can, in various quantities, be present in placer gold particles. Native gold can be in complete solid solution with native silver and contain additional elements including Cu, As, Pb, Fe, and S. The chemical signature of the gold is determined by the thermodynamic conditions of precipitation and transport as well as the total metal content of the system. As Townley et al. (2003) explains, “These thermodynamic conditions and metal budget differ from one type of hydrothermal deposit to another, and hence different deposit types will each have a characteristic gold compositional signature.” Identifying this signature can be a highly valuable tool in exploring for gold, as it can not only be used to determine the original source deposit of the placer gold, but provide valuable insight as to the erosion level of the present deposit."

The technical paper correctly points out that the kriging variance is not a good measure of the uncertainty of the estimated (i.e., kriged) value of individual blocks. The au thors claim that their proposed jackknife method, which is a rekriging of each block by eliminating, in turn, one sample from the original sample set and then taking the average of the rekriged estimates, not only gives good block estimates, but the resulting jackknife kriging standard deviation is a useful indicator of the "true uncertainty associated with block estimates." However, they immediately abandon the idea of using the block-by-block standard deviations, reasoning that these standard deviations are not independent and that there is no easy way to utilize them. There may be another reason for not using them. The jackknife standard deviations for individual blocks given in their example are mostly in the range of 0.004 to 0.005 oz/st (0.14 to 0.17 g/t) with only one block having a high value of 0.012 oz/st (0.41 g/ t). These individual block standard deviations are as low as the jackknife standard deviation for the mean grade of the entire shape, i.e., 0.0041 oz/st (0.14 g/t). Do they represent the "true uncertainty" of the individual block estimates? Could the authors explain this? In a global shape consisting of a large number of blocks, any given sample will affect the kriged estimate of only those few blocks within its vicinity. This is the rationale for the authors' selective rekriging, making the jackknife algorithm more efficient. On second thought, why not do away with jackknifing altogether? Just cumulate and normalize, if necessary, the kriging weights of each sample used during the ordinary block kriging process, and then compute the global variance from these kriging weights and their respective sample grades? After all, isn't the global mean grade nothing but the weighted average of the samples used in the estimation? Reply by G.S. Adisoma and M.G. Hester The jackknife is one of the many tools in a practitioner's toolbox to solve estimation problems. The strengths of the technique lies in its simplicity, i.e., it uses the concept of mean and standard deviation and the fact that it can be easily combined with other tools, in this case kriging. Because the jackknife kriging (JK) estimate is also the mean of the pseudovalues, the JK standard deviation is attractive just as the standard deviation of the mean explains the variability of the data. The difference is that the pseudovalue calculation in jackknife kriging uses the ordinary kriging (OK) weighting scheme instead of simple arithmetic averaging. The data used to illustrate the jackknife technique in the paper consist of high values that are roughly three times the low values. The resulting JK estimate of the block grades show that the highest estimate is roughly twice the grade of the lowest estimate. The contrast between the low and the high estimate is more evident in the JK estimate than in the OK estimate, even though the mean grades of the blocks for the two estimates are very similar. Nonetheless, in this paper, we are concentrating more on the need for a more realistic measure of uncertainty, or precision, for the estimate. Unlike its OK counterpart, the JK standard deviation of the blocks clearly reflects the original data variation. The highest JK standard deviation of the blocks is three times its lowest value. This follows our intuition that, when the samples used to estimate a block is more variable, the resulting estimation variance (or standard deviation) should be higher than the case where the samples are more uniformly valued. However, block-by-block standard deviation or variance is of little practical value in reserve estimation and classification, as well as in mine planning. One is usually more interested in quantifying not the variance of the individual block estimate, but the uncertainties associated with a much larger dimension, such as the minable reserve. Thus, the thrust of the paper is to find a simple way to obtain a single estimation variance or standard deviation associated with the reserve grade estimate. The discussion by J.H. Tu did not mention how one would obtain the global variance from the OK weights and the sample grades. As a technique that offers a data valuebased measure of uncertainty for its estimate, the "leave-one-out" jackknife fills this need nicely through the block kriging shortcut approach described in the paper. Note: The first column and the last two columns of Table 3 in the paper should have contained a single number each, namely, an OK estimate of 0.0317, a JK estimate of 0.0333 and a JK standard deviation of 0.0041 oz/st, respectively, for the shape, as are obvious from the text. ?

Overview Coal production in the first half of 1982 remained near the high levels begun in mid-1981. Production then fell sharply during the latter part of the year due to recession-weakened demand. Even so, 1982 coal production was estimated at 756 Mt (833.4 million st), a record high that exceeded 1980's previous production record of 752.7 Mt (829.7 million st). Though 1982 coal production was substantially below industry expectations, the attained production represented a modest achievement in view of the recession's severity. In 1982, the gross national product declined 1.8%, its worst performance in 36 years. The recession, along with mild weather, improved energy efficiency, and conservation efforts caused the nation's energy use to drop 4.1%. With the iron and steel, construction, and auto industries experiencing production declines, industrial energy use fell 10.8%. The extent to which the nation's economic slump affected coal markets in 1982 varied: • total domestic coal use declined 3.4%; • exports remained strong for most of the year; • electric utility coal use declined for the first time in 25 years; • coal use at coke plants declined by one-third; and • coal use in other industrial sectors stayed surprisingly near the 1981 level. Coal Use Domestic coal use totaled 641.8 Mt (707.5 million st) in 1982,22 .9 Mt (25.2 million st) below the 1981 level. Nearly all the decline occurred at coke plants where use dropped to 37.1 Mt (40.9 million st) in 1982 from 55.3 Mt (61 million st) in 1981. The decline in all other industrial and electric utility coal markets was only 5.3 Mt (5.8 million st). Residential and commercial coal use increased 635 kt (700,000 st) to 7.3 Mt (8.1 million st) from 6.7 Mt (7.4 million st). Power generation decreased 2.3% in 1982, the first year since 1945 that output failed to increase. The decline was due to a drop in industrial demand. Electricity sales to residential, commercial, and other nonindustrial users increased slightly. But coal's competitive position stayed strong. Power generation from oil and natural gas fell 28.9% and 11.7%, respectively. Power generation from coal declined only 0.9%. Among the primary energy sources, coal fueled 53.2% of US electric power generated in 1982, compared with 52.4% in 1981. In 1982, US steel production declined to 66.1 Mt (72.9 million st), the lowest level in 50 years and down from 109.6 Mt (120.8 million st) in 1981. The reduced steel demand forced 13 coke plants to shut down. Coal Exports Coal exports in 1982 totaled 96.4 Mt (106.3 million st), 5.7 Mt (6.3 million st) less than in 1981. Despite the worldwide recession and above normal coal stockpiles in many countries, exports were higher than many expected. This showed the relatively strong US position in international coal trade. The US continued to export near-record coal tonnages despite increasingly competitive influences. These included an improvement in Australia's labor difficulties, the return of Polish coal to Western European markets, and lower oil prices. In 1982, US port facilities were improved and expanded, and more efficient methods for scheduling foreign vessels were implemented. As a result, high volume coal shipments to US ports were routinely loaded and dispatched unhampered by bottlenecks that plagued East Coast ports in 1981. From 1968 to 1975, most work in surface modification of inorganic materials involved silane coupling agents. A silane coupling agent can be described simply as an oganosilicon chemical having a general formula RSi-X3 wherein the R group is attached to a silicon in a thermally and hydrolytically stable manner, and X is a hydrolyzable group usually having an alkoxy functionality. About 1975, Kenrich Petrochemicals brought into the market place titanate coupling agents. Titanate coupling agents usually consist of one alkoxy group and three functional groups attached to a central titanium atom. Zircoaluminates became available in about 1982. Zircoaluminate organometallic coupling agents, which vary principally in their respective organofunctionalities, arise from a basic technology in which two different types of organic ligands are selectively bound to a low-molecular weight zircoaluminate backbone.

In the past we have been somewhat harrassed by the terms "'quality control" and "process control". This is especially true where the industry is dependent upon the chemical analysis of their product which in turn informs them how, well they have been controlling the process. The information which they have received, in most cases, is of an historical nature rather than of current value. The word "control" is to have more significance in future operations. This is particularly true in the metals industry. As the industry continues to process lower grade ores, and processing costs continue to rise, they must obtain more information faster to exercise "control" to its fullest extent.

"Ten years ago," said a mining industry personnel manager, "we used to wine and dine new mining engineering graduates. Now I can pick and choose among men with 10 years of experience." Comments like that are common throughout the industry today. During the 1970s, the US and Canada did indeed suffer from a severe shortage of mining engineers, especially experienced ones. Moreover, it seemed likely this North American shortage would worsen. Increased production of minerals and coal was pushing demand for mining engineers upwards, and there appeared to be substantial new employment prospects for them in the nascent synfuels industry. The oil majors entering the mining industry were pushing for an increased professionalization of mining management, heralding a trend towards higher intensity in the use of mining engineers. In response to the shortage, mining schools expanded their programs dramatically. By 1982, American schools were churning out more than 600 new mining engineers per year, compared to barely 200 in 1970 (Table 1). The timing of the explosion in the number of mining engineers could not have been worse. The downturn in the economy and the resulting slump in the mining industry coincided almost exactly with peak output of mining engineers. The market for mining engineers shifted from shortage to surplus with startling rapidity. The new crop of engineers, no longer courted by the mining companies, struggled to find any mining jobs. At the same time, experienced mining engineers found themselves thrown into the job market, some for the first time in decades. The current oversupply of mining engineers is assumed to be a temporary phenomenon. As the economy recovers, the demand for mining engineers is expected to pick up at least enough to absorb today's surplus. Not so, according to a recent study by Fenvessy and Schwab, a general management consulting and executive recruiting firm. In 1979, Fenvessy and Schwab was commissioned by a group of major mining companies to conduct a worldwide study of supply and demand for mining engineers to the year 2000*. The study began at the height of the North American shortage. One major objective of the study was "to identify means by which business and educational institutions may cope with and alleviate a future shortage of mining engineering talent." The findings, however, ran directly counter to expectations. The current oversupply will not disappear with economic recovery, the study concluded. In fact, the US and Canada are facing a massive oversupply that will probably last until the end of the century, unless enrollments in schools are reduced. Study Method Fenvessy and Schwab's conclusions are based on supply and demand models for mining engineers that it developed in the course of the study. Specifically, predictions for the supply of mining engineers are based on a survey of the 54 mining schools that account for about 90% of the world's annual output of mining engineering graduates. This survey asked for data on historical and projected number of graduates, obstacles to further expansion, changing trends in the use of mining engineers, and graduate career patterns. Fenvessy and Schwab developed three mining engineering supply scenarios from the survey data. The high case, considered unlikely for most of the industrialized world, is based on a continuation of the 1970's soaring growth rates. The middle case was established from the mining schools' own estimates of future growth in the number of graduating mining engineers. Finally, a "low growth" case for the US and Canada assumed that the number of graduating engineers will remain at current levels. Due to pricing volatility and lack of availability of metals, the use of non-metallic materials of construction in metal extraction and refining processes has increased significantly in recent years Even though costs and availability of metals has improved recently, these factors are not expected to continue into the future as metal supplies once again fall short of global demand. One of the most common non-metallic materials of construction used in metal extraction and refining processes today is Fiberglass- Reinforced Plastic (FRP). These processes often require materials of construction that can resist acids and high concentrations of acid chloride salts. As shown in Table 1, FRP based on epoxy vinyl ester resin has the same chemical resistance to acid and better resistance to acid chloride salts than alloy C-276 and is superior to 2205 stainless steel in both cases.

Since man began beneficiating ores, a limited number of factors influenced the type of treatment. The ore itself has always been a factor. The first form of concentration was probably hand sorting, and the grade of concentrate and recovery had to be considered from the start. The cost of labor as a factor in mill design did not attain importance until the period following World War I. Power was one of the cheapest commodities available, and consequently power consumption was ignored. That no longer holds true. The present work does nothing to simplify the work of the metallurgist, or designer. On the contrary it adds another element to the design considerations. And while this report concentrates on power consumption, the mill designer must take the other factors into account as well. This study is based on a compilation of data supplied by a number of Western United States copper operations, as well as information from equipment manufacturers. Although its conclusiones apply to other minerals and geographic areas, the information is more precise, when applied to similar ores. The discussion has been divided into sections covering crushing, grinding, and flotation as these are the principal power consuming functions.

An innovative patented process has been developed to convert high volume wastes--fly ash from coal-fired power plants, municipal solid waste (MSW) ash from incineration, solids from waste water treatment and paper mill sludge into a high value and environmentally benign product in the form of a lightweight aggregate. Lightweight Aggregate is widely used in the building construction industry in the United States, Europe and some Asian countries. This paper will present the development of the process, the process itself and details on the first commercial scale plant. The commercial plant is owned and operated by Wisconsin Electric Power (WEPCO).

During slow-cooling crystallization of iron-making blast furnace slags, most rare-earth elements in the feed recrystallize as cerite-calcium while scandium and europium concentrate in a sheet-like "mineral". The mineralogy of this "mineral" is studied with one of the objectives being the extraction of the "mineral" from the slag for recovery of Sc and Eu. This "mineral" has been identified as one of the mica group minerals and can be named as rare-earth-bearing barium fluorophlogopite. The mineralogical characteristics of this "mineral" are investigated and discussed. This "mineral" can be effectively recovered from the slag by flotation with dodecylammonium acetate or a combination of dodecylammonium acetate and sodium oleate as a collector.

Over the past four years, the Coal Research Bureau of West Virginia University has presented a number of papers on operations research in the coal industry before various AIME meetings and meetings of other societies. These papers have been followed up by further presentations in the technical press. The emphasis of all of these papers has been to demonstrate applications of operations research to the solution of numerous types of coal industry problems. In each case, effort has been made to demonstrate that operations research does not require extensive knowledge of computer science or use of sophisticated higher mathematics. In fact, for most applications, satisfactory results can be obtained by a single individual in a minimum of time with no aids other than a pencil and paper and a knowledge of basic arithmetic. The most recent efforts by the Coal Research Bureau have been directed toward the continuing industry problem of optimizing the location of mining facilities. Preliminary work in this area was presented before the Central Appalachian Section of AIME and subsequently published in the May, 1972, issue of Coal Age. This initial presentation illustrated techniques for determining optimum locations of facilities based upon material transport effort under the assumption of constant cost per ton mile of haulage effort. The present paper will expand upon this earlier work and introduce economic factors. In the design of a mine or mining system, careful consideration must be given to the sites selected for each element of the system. Optimum placement of facilities is vital to minimize capital and operating cost. Thus, barring unfavorable geological conditions or other exceptional factors, facilities should be located at those points which represent the minimum cumulative cost over the life of the property. Most cost factors are independent, or essentially independent of the location of fixed facilities. Thus, for example, regardless of the location of the shaft, the direct cost to mine any given ton of coal is essentially constant. The major 1

The Stanreck mine of Stanreck Uranium Mines Limited in located on Quirks Lake in the Elliot lake - Blind River area of Northern Ontario. It is approximately 25 miles north of the north shore of Lake Huron, equidistant between the cities of Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie. The property was developed ad brought into production at a rate of 3,000 tens of ore/day during the uranium boom of the mid 1950's. By 1960 mine waters were becoming quite acid through the activity of bacteria. Treatment of this water was begun for pollution control and a small amount of uranium which had been leached from the ore by these acid waters was recovered. Development of bacterial leaching with a view to increasing production by this method commenced in December 1962. Subsequently, it was succeesfull in producing 10,000 - 15,000 lbs. of U308/month. Since late 1964 uranium production has been obtained solely from bacterial leaching. A rare earth concentrate was also made for its yttrium content during 1966 and 1967. This paper describes the development, operation and methods used in the underground bacterial leaching process.

In considering the importance of lease management and administration, I have decided to approach the topic, Lease Default and Eviction: Action or Reaction, as a three phase presentation dealing with mineral lease administration and management, past, present and future. Though the title may border on the dramatic, it illustrates the real consequences of alternative approaches to property management viewed from my experience in the evaluation, development and implementation of a number of such systems and services in my current position as president of Talco Group Corporation. First, though, let's take a moment and set the stage by giving a few actual examples of why a pragmatic approach is needed in this particular area.

Most analysts find that progress has been evolutionary in any technologic field. To be sure, a few discrete breakthroughs can usually be identified, but viewed in its entirety, the curve of technologic progress over time tends to be relatively smooth with few discontinuities. Even in those cases where a major scientific discovery is achieved, the rate of technologic progress is limited by the often surprisingly slow rate of commercializing the concept into usable products. Whereas discovery and invention tend to be discrete events, technical innovation is often a painfully slow process. In spite of overall gradual change, technologic progress in most fields, when viewed in retrospect, tends to reveal certain relatively homogeneous periods where little change is evident, separated by episodes of accelerated progress. Thus, open-pit mining over the past century has changed from predominately train haulage to truck haulage and is now experiencing a major increase in belt haulage. Ore reserve estimation is another field that fits the same pattern, and the history of mine evaluation lends itself to a similar analysis. Evaluating mine investment opportunities is a fascinating aspect of mining. The unique set of risks inherent to every mining project is particularly intriguing. Geologic risks are most obvious, since faulty ore grade and tonnage estimates are among the leading causes of mine failures. Wide swine's in mineral commodity prices are usually cited as another major risk in mining. Because any ore deposit is a finite resource and the miner has limited discretion in selecting a mining sequence, mines are generally at the mercy of notoriously fickle commodity markets. There is a tendency for many mine investment analysts to feel that mineral market uncertainties are unprecedented in severity. Of course, prices in other markets rise and fall also-in some cases as precipitously as with minerals. However, two other mining characteristics tend to compound this marketing risk. First, the preproduction development period for a new mine is characteristically long. Under extremely favorable conditions, a significant mine may be developed in as little as two years, but the norm is four to six years or more. Second, mining is among the most capital intensive industries, consistently ranking near the top among all industrial sectors in assets per employee, and near the bottom in annual sales dollars per dollar of assets. Thus, mine investors typically have large sums invested for a long time before the outcome of the venture is determined by notoriously unpredictable markets. This is not a business for the faint of heart, and the importance of sound investment decision making is obvious. The high risk and technical complexity of mining operations have combined to require greater attention to financial evaluation by mining engineers than by most engineers in other specialties. Nearly all early mining engineering textbooks dealt with problems in mine valuation in a detailed manner; and, today, the sophistication of capital investment analysis is high in the mineral industries. Traditional Mine Valuation Methods Although some evaluation process has no doubt accompanied nearly every mine development throughout history, a formalized quantitative approach first emerged in the last half of the 19th century with the establishment of academic programs in mining engineering. The philosophy and approach to mine valuation that evolved at this time were, with periodic minor refinements, considered the standard for nearly a century. Only after 1960 did major changes begin to occur. The traditional approach to mine valuation reflected the investment community's historic attitudes toward risk. Mines were generally considered too risky for debt financing, and virtually every new mine was financed from internally generated funds or new equity subscriptions. INTRODUCTION A shuttle car is a self-propelled rubber-tired haul¬age vehicle designed specifically for underground min¬ing, primarily in coal mines (see Figs. 1 and 2). The drive mechanism is located on the sides of the vehicle, and the load is carried in the center. A chain-and-flight conveyor distributes the load when the car is being loaded by a loading machine or continuous miner and also discharges the load onto a conveyor belt or into a mine car. As the name implies, the shuttle car shuttles back and forth between the working face and the un¬loading point and is not required to turn around. Shuttle cars have served as primary haulage in this country since 1940 and still perform this function in most coal mines today. TYPES OF SHUTTLE CARS Shuttle cars may be battery-powered, diesel-powered, or cable-reel electric powered. Battery-powered cars were used between 1940 and 1950, but are almost out of existence today because of their limited power. Diesel cars have been used in coal mines, but are used mostly in noncoal mines where rules and regulations are not as stringent. Also, objections by organized labor have limited the use of diesel-powered shuttle cars in coal mines. Today, the largest number of shuttle cars are cable-reel cars. Electric power is fed through a cable stored on a cable reel that may have a capacity from 152 to 244 m (500 to 800 ft), depending upon the size of the cable and the cable reel (see Table 1). This, of course, limits the travel of a shuttle car. However, time studies have shown that for the most efficient haulage cycle, the length of haulage should not exceed 91 m (300 ft). As haulage distance increases, the waiting time for the loader or miner becomes longer, and haul¬age efficiency suffers. Cable-reel cars are manufactured in standard hand and opposite standard hand models. A standard car has the operator's control on the left front side and the opposite standard car has the opera¬tor's controls on the right front. Generally a loader or miner operates with two shuttle cars, one of each type. This allows the trailing cable to lie on either side of the entry and prevents the cables from fouling each other. Shuttle cars are designed to operate with either dc or ac power. Cars using dc power are designed for 250-v supply and ac cars are designed for either 440, 550, or 950 v, three-phase voltage. Most coal mines that are relatively level can use dc cars where dynamic brak¬ing is not required. For mines having steep grades (in excess of 15%) ac cars are used because ac traction motors have inherent dynamic braking and are safer when tramming downgrade. A recent innovation in shuttle car design in the last five years has been the introduction of an ac/dc car. This design utilizes ac input power through the cable, and the power is rectified on the car to 250-v do for traction motors. The pump motor and conveyor motor are powered by ac voltage. The main advantage of this design is efficiency-a much smaller cable may be used and the smooth operating characteristics of the dc traction motor is obtained. This prevents shock loading on the traction drive train, which is an undesirable feature of ac traction motors. SHUTTLE CAR FEATURES Elevating Discharge Today, all shuttle cars are equipped with an elevating front conveyor that allows the shuttle car to discharge into a mine car or belt feeder without the use of ramps. Cyanide is one of the most used reagents in the precious metal extraction process; as well as the most efficient from the point of view of the dissolution process; but it is also a toxic product that requires a lot of care in handling. Likewise, the residual solutions of the process must be followed because they can be a risk of contamination of water, animals and human health. In the artisanal processes of obtaining gold and silver, neutralization of the residual solutions is used to passivate the present cyanide. During this process ammonium cyanate is formed which decomposes rapidly in the presence of air and sunlight in carbon dioxide and ammonia gas, contributing to the greenhouse effect. In this work the use of the ammonium cyanate obtained in the process of neutralization of the cyanide solutions as a reagent to obtain urea is proposed. Urea was obtained indirectly through the use of the reagent kit UREA/BUN-COLOR. The process is effective at pH ≤ 4.5 with a rapid increase in solution temperature, and addition of hydrogen peroxide. The urea crystals begin to form at 50°C. The cyanide / urea ratio obtained was 1 / 7.5 INTRODUCTION In the processes of extractive gold metallurgy, the use of cyanide leaching is perhaps the most widely used method worldwide; by the ease of operation, its low cost and high levels of precious metal recovery. However, neutralization, in most processing plants, is not done properly, and leftovers of solution with free cyanide are dumped in concentrations harmful to the environment, in particular animals and humans. Cyanide can enter surface water through releases from industries using cyanides. Due to its high toxicity, the presence of cyanide in water is a matter of great concern (Jawale et al., 2017). The pollution generated by the effluents from the leaching of gold ores is one of the main obstacles of social opposition presented by mining activity due to the impact of both surface and groundwater. During the cyanide decomposition process, a compound known as ammonium cyanate OCN(NH4), which is a raw material for the manufacture of urea, CO(NH2)2 is generated. In the case of good neutralization, cyanide is no longer a toxic compound through oxidizing reagents, but as a result, there is the generation and emission of ammonia and carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, generating both a greenhouse effect (Gómez, 2012). This is evidenced by the strong effervescence of the reaction, and a penetrating smell of ammonia, which can irritate respiratory mucous membranes and eyes; however because they are greenhouse gases they are considered pollutants.

As part of the Ship Canal Water Quality Project, 2.7-mile Combined Sewer Overflow tunnel is excavated with a 21.5-foot diameter EPB Tunnel Boring Machine. Due to the difficult geological and hydrogeological conditions, the tunnel is excavated maintaining a ground support pressure between 1 and 3 bar imposing significant challenges to the projects. The first part of the paper describes the general characteristics of the project while the second part focuses on the challenges and technical details of the pressurized breakthrough that took place in a deep shaft excavated in urban environment as part of the project.

"New approaches that increase hydrometallurgical recovery from refractory minerals in below mill cutoff -grade sulfide copper ore can add significant value, improve profitability and increase ore reserves. This paper describes the development and implementation of an engineered heap (EH) approach to leaching low-grade, chalcopyritebearing ore at Freeport-McMoRan’s mine in Morenci, AZ. The technical evolution of the engineered heap concept is described together with the challenges and benefits following implementation. Introduction The Morenci ore deposit, located in eastern Arizona, has been mined for copper for 140 years. Mineralization in the Morenci district consists of sulfides and oxides. To process these ores, Morenci operates concentrator and leaching circuits. Leaching accounts for two-thirds of the copper produced in Morenci. More than one-half of this leaching-derived copper production comes from run-of-mine (ROM) stockpiles. The largest category of material moved in Morenci is destined for ROM stockpiles and waste dumps. Materials that are not economic to mill or leach are designated “waste.” However, this designation can change based on improvements in extraction technology and commodity prices. Chalcopyrite does not leach well due to its refractory nature. For predominant chalcopyrite mineralized ore, copper recovery during a typical leaching cycle may be as low as 5%. For this reason, chalcopyritedominant ores below mill cutoff grade have historically been classified as waste. By incorporating advanced leaching technology to improve metal recovery from previously leach-resistant ore types such as chalcopyrite, the Morenci Mine has been able to reclassify substantial amounts of this “waste” to “ore.” Process chemistry Chalcopyrite copper extraction is temperature, oxygen and ferric dependent. The temperature is achieved primarily by pyrite oxidation (Eq. (1)) and secondarily by oxidation of chalcopyrite itself (Eq. (2)). The regeneration of ferric in solution can be enhanced by providing the appropriate acid and oxygen levels according to Eq. (3). In the absence of microorganisms, this reaction is very slow."
