An investigation is made into the applicability of queueing theory to simulating the operation of a large open pit copper mine in the southwestern United States. Actual data from a working mine was used to construct curves for truck loading time, haulage and return time, and dumping times. Known results of investigations of queueing models (Koenigsberg - 1958, Gordon and Newell - 1967, Cabera and Maher - 1973) were used to simulate the actual operation. These did not give acceptable results so commonly used probability distributions were fitted to the actual data. A large computer program known as Q-GERT was used with the various parameters obtained from fitting the curves. Kolmogorov- Smirnov tests were run that showed that this was not satisfactory either. Finally, Q-GERT was used with the actual data from the mine. An appropriate correction factor is then found to apply to the exponential probability distributions tested previously and satisfactory results are obtained.

On August 3, 1987, a hearing was held by the House Subcommittee on Energy and the Environment to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA). Four panels of environmental/citizen group representatives went before the Subcommittee to report on the state of affairs (from their perspective) of the coal industry and the Office of Surface Mining, Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE) As expected, these groups had little positive news to report and continued to focus on glaring deficiencies within the surface mining program. They indicated that gross abuse of SMCRA has continued over the past ten years and the states have performed poorly. Congressman Udall's opening comments perhaps best characterized the mood of the group with his statement that "The Act has not accomplished what I or the people of the coalfields had hoped." and " ? a segment of the coal industry has continued in its bitter and implacable opposition to the most basic of environmental controls."

The technical paper correctly points out that the kriging variance is not a good measure of the uncertainty of the estimated (i.e., kriged) value of individual blocks. The authors claim that their proposed jack-knife method, which is a rekriging of each block by eliminating, in turn, one sample from m the original sample set and then taking the average of the rekriged estimates, not only gives good block estimates, but the resulting jackknife kriging standard deviation is a useful indicator of the "true uncertainty associated with block estimates." However, they immediately abandon the idea of using the block-by-block standard deviations, reasoning that these standard deviations are not independent and that there is no easy way to utilize them. There may be another reason for not using them. The jackknife standard deviations for individual blocks given in their example are mostly in the range of 0.004 to 0.005 oz/st (0.14 to 0.17 g/t) with only one block having a high value of 0.012 oz/st (0.41 g/ t). These individual block standard deviations are as low as the jackknife standard deviation for the mean grade of the entire shape, i.e., 0.0041 oz/st (0.14 g/t). Do they represent the "true uncertainty" .of the individual block estimates? Could the authors explain this? In a global shape consisting of a large number of blocks, any given sample will affect the kriged estimate of only those few blocks within its vicinity. This is the rationale for the authors' selective rekriging, making the jackknife algorithm more efficient. On second thought, why not do away with jackknifing altogether? Just cumulate and normalize, if necessary, the kriging weights of each sample used during the ordinary block kriging process, and then compute the global variance from these kriging weights and their respective sample grades? After all, isn't the global mean grade nothing but the weighted average of the samples used in the estimation? Reply by G.S. Adisoma and M.G. Hester The jackknife is one of the many tools in a practitioner's toolbox to solve estimation problems. The strengths of the technique lies in its simplicity, i.e., it uses the concept of mean and standard deviation and the fact that it can be easily combined with other tools, in this case kriging. Because the jackknife kriging (JK) estimate is also the mean of the pseudovalues, the JK standard deviation is attractive just as the standard deviation of the mean explains the variability of the data. The difference is that the pseudovalue calculation in jackknife kriging uses the ordinary kriging (OK) weighting scheme instead of simple arithmetic averaging. The data used to illustrate the jackknife technique in the paper con¬sist of high values that are roughly three times the low values. The resulting JK estimate of the block grades show that the highest estimate is roughly twice the grade of the lowest estimate. The contrast between the low and the high estimate is more evident in the JK estimate than in the OK estimate, even though the mean grades of the blocks for the two estimates are very similar. Nonetheless, in this paper, we are concentrating more on the need for a more realistic measure of uncertainty, or precision, for the estimate. Unlike its OK counterpart, the JK standard deviation of the blocks clearly reflects the original data variation. The highest JK standard deviation of the blocks is three times its lowest value. This follows our intuition that, when the samples used to estimate a block is more variable, the resulting estimation variance (or standard deviation) should be higher than the case where the samples are more uniformly valued. However, block-by-block standard deviation or variance is of little practical value in reserve estimation and classification, as well as in mine planning. One is usually more interested in quantifying not the variance of the individual block estimate, but the uncertainties associated with a much larger dimension, such as the minable reserve. Thus, the thrust of the paper is to find a simple way to obtain a single estimation variance or standard deviation associated with the reserve grade estimate. The discussion by J.H. Tu did not mention how one would obtain the global variance from the OK weights and the sample grades. As a technique that offers a data value-based measure of uncertainty for its estimate, the "leave-one-out" jackknife fills this need nicely through the block kriging shortcut approach described in the paper. Note: The first column and the last two columns of Table 3 in the paper should have contained a single number each, namely, an OK estimate of 0.0317, a JK estimate of 0.0333 and a JK standard deviation of 0.0041 oz/st, respectively, for the shape, as are obvious from the text.

INTRODUCTION Under a Federal grant by the Urban Mass Transit Administration (UMTA) (80%), and sponsored by the State of New York (200), Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority is constructing a 10.3 km (6.4 mile) light rail rapid transit system in Buffalo, New York. The $450 million project, which began construction in the Spring of 1979, is unique in rail transit alignment designs in the U.S.A. and the first predominantly underground light rail system in North America. The Buffalo project is unique in that the first phase of the expandable system follows the alignment of Main Street and is on the surface in a proposed 1.6 km (1.0 mile) pedestrian mall in the downtown business district. The alignment then progresses northward into a cut-and-cover portal and standard double-box configuration for 2.74 km (1.7 miles) at a depth of 9.1-10.7 m (30-35 ft) and subsequently drops into bedrock at depths of 18.3-27.4 m (60 to 90 ft). The 5.63 km (3.5 mile) rock tunnel section consists of two single tunnels 4.88 m (16.0 ft) nominal finished diam. and includes five stations. The rock tunnel line section was divided into a north and south contract of 2 316 m (7,600 ft) and 3 243 m (10,640 ft), respectively. The National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum (NMHFM) in Leadville, CO will induct the class of 2011 on Sept. 10, 2011. Representing the coal, metallurgical/processing, research and development, marble and lead industries, this year?s inductees cover a diverse crosssection of the mining industry. William Francis Diamond, Wayne Hazen, Redfield Proctor and Jeffrey Zelms will join 210 other mining industry pioneers when they are formally inducted into the National Mining Hall of Fame at the 24th Annual Induction Banquet and Ceremony. The members of this year?s class were selected for being visionaries, leaders and ambassadors both within their own sectors and across the industry at large. Diamond had an illustrious engineering and managerial career that spanned four decades with Island Creek Coal Co. During that time, he was responsible for the engineering and construction of the deepest coal mines producing in North America at the time.

The beach and offshore gold resources demonstrated at Nome, Alaska are some of the richest found in Alaska. They contain potentially significant resources that may be exploited in the future. Several companies have contributed to the exploration and reserve estimation in Nome offshore gold deposits. More than 3,000 holes were drilled and over 10,000 offshore samples were analyzed in the Nome offshore areas of approximately 40 km2. Those 3,000 plus drill hole logs were converted into digital formats comparable with ArcGIS software. Considerable amounts of mineral resources data were processed and visualized using ArcGIS 8.3 and its geostatistic, 3D analysis, and spatial analysis components. In this study, based on the data processing and visualization results of ArcGIS, a user-friendly website for mineral resource management and utilization is developed using ArcIMS 4.0.1. ArcIMS is a GIS solution to build and deliver maps, data, and tools over the Internet. The Nome offshore mineral resources website presents the geostatistic and GIS analysis information. This site allows clients to access the information and perform ArcGIS analysis, such as interactive data query, and map layers display of the gold resource distribution, average grade, gold reserve, and relative mineral resource estimation via remote computers. With linkage to other related mining web sites, this web site allows users to search for related publications and more flexibly manage the information. A few other appropriate customized tools are also being developed to assist interactions between the server and clients for data analysis and management.

I'm really very pleased to be talking with you today about the environmental impacts of gold ore processing as part of this symposium on emerging process technologies for a cleaner environment. But before I talk about some of the newer developments that are coming, I would like to set the stage by reviewing some of the recent past. Over the last decade or so the U.S. gold mining industry has experienced remarkable growth, primarily in heap leaching operations, and not surprisingly there has been parallel growth of environmental regulations. At Homestake, we have had the excitement of bringing on-line a new mine embodying state-of-the-art technology and environmental planning, and during the same period the flagship of our company, the Homestake mine, has been brought into modern day compliance through the application of innovative environmental technology. This has been a learning process; in both cases we found that we had to develop new ways to meet our objectives. At our McLaughlin mine in California a major achievement was pioneering the use of pressure oxidation, or autoclaves, for refractory gold ores, and at the Homestake it was the development of a unique bio-treatment plant for wastewater. These projects were developed balancing operational goals, environmental concerns and costs, and I would submit that being cost-effective is our greatest challenge in the development of new, environmentally sound, process technology. In meeting that challenge, our job has not been made any easier by the myriad environmental laws and regulations that directly affect the design and operation of our facilities. Most of these constraints have evolved through the political process more or less independently, but in their application there often are over-lapping provisions. Adding to this complexity is the fact that action takes place in both state and federal arenas. As a result, state and federal roles sometimes become intertwined, and a good case in point is provided by various cyanide issues faced by gold producers. The vast majority of U.S. gold mining takes place in the so-called "mineral States," the western States that come under the Mining Law of 1872 as amended. This is the basic statute that provides for access and tenure to develop mineral resources on federal lands in those states. There is gold mining outside the defined mineral States, and there is also gold mining in the mineral States on private lands. Our own Homestake mine in South Dakota is one of the best examples of the latter category: located entirely on private land, it is nevertheless subject to at least 13 federal environmental statutes and some 29 federal regulatory requirements. There are also nine significant state statutory and regulatory requirements that apply. On federal lands in the mineral States there are numerous federal statutes and regulations which affect mining, over and above the current Mining Law. These, which are in addition to the laws applying to private land, include the National Environmental Protection Act and the Federal Land Policy and Management Act, among others. Still, those who advocate radical changes in the basic Mining Law would have us believe that sweeping environmental protection and reclamation provisions, not to mention new land use restrictions, are needed. Such changes could effectively prohibit mining on the federal public lands. Strict enforcement of our current Mining Law would have presented most of the abuses cited by the critics but if the Law is to be changed at all, I believe that, at a minimum, the principles of self-initiation and security of tenure embodied in the present statute should be maintained. These are critically important concepts, but there are other statutory and regulatory issues constantly before us as gold miners. Introduction The recent development of rare earth permanent magnets has revolutionized the field of magnetic separation. The advent of rare earth permanent magnets in the 1980s provided a magnetic product that was an order of magnitude stronger than that conventional ferrite magnets. This allowed for the design of high-intensity magnetic circuits that operated energy free and that surpassed electromagnets in the strength and effectiveness. New applications and design concepts that focused on the mineral and metal processing industries have evolved. This technology led to the development of various magnetic separators specifically designed for mineral processing applications. Applications that were not previously considered are now being used in primary mineral upgrading, recycling and secondary recovery. Historical perspective Lodestone was the first naturally occurring permanent magnetic material known. Lodstone was most likely used to upgrade iron ore by early civilizations. By the 1600s, the early magnet technology had advanced to quench-hardened iron-carbon alloys. The practical significance of magnetic separation was formally recognized in 1792 when an English patent was issued for separating iron ore by magnetic attraction. By today's standards, carbon steel is a very poor magnet material. It is easily demagnetized and has a very low energy product of much less than I MGOe (Million-Gauss-Oerstads). This was state-of-the-art technology for almost 300 years until chromium was added to magnet feedstock, which resulted in a three-fold increase in the energy product. The well documented addition of cobalt to permanent magnets in 1917 initiated the 30-year era of "Alnico" magnets that at the time provided a superior magnetic energy product. Since then, the science of magnetism has advanced rapidly and is now considered a highly developed branch of physics and material science. Permanent magnets have had an extremely long history. Figure 1 presents a chronology of permanent magnets that illustrates the increase in energy product. Amazing developments in material science have taken place in the last two decades. The gradual advancement of permanent magnet technology was shattered in 1967 with the initial development of samarium-cobalt (rare earth) magnets. Since that time, the advent of neodymium-boron-iron magnets provided such an increase in energy product that new design concepts were considered. New avenues of study were introduced by the complexities in the material science and physics involved in describing these new permanent magnets. Furthermore, applications for permanent magnets that were previously not considered were now viable. Rare earth elements Rare earth elements have claimed the attention of scientists for the past century. These elements were originally termed "rare" because they were thought to be quite scarce. Since then, however, geological studies have shown them to be relatively abundant. The discovery and identification of rare earth elements is complicated by the inherent difficulties in separating them from each other. The rare earth elements comprise the fifteen transition elements of Group IIIB, Period 6, of the periodic table. These elements extend from lanthanum to lutetium and are commonly called the lanthanide series. Samarium and neodymium are the two most common elements used in the commercial manufacture of rare earth permanent magnets. Commercial grade rare earth magnets There are only a few common types of rare earth magnets that are considered in the circuit design for magnetic separators. Early rare earth magnets of commercial significance (introduced in 1970) consisted of the first generation of sintered SmCo5. The energy product of these magnets ranged up to 23 MGOe, which provided the initial impetus to the field of high-energy permanent magnets. Although these magnets did not produce the extremely high magnetic field strengths of current rare earth magnets, they were relatively temperature stable. Containing 66% Co, they are the most expensive of the basic commercial rare earth permanent magnets. Their use is limited today because they are being replaced by second and third generation rare earth permanent magnets.

A panel discussion on carbon-in-pulp processing of gold and silver ores was one of the highlights of the 1981 AIME Annual Meeting in Chicago. The session generated considerable interest and discussion among panelists and the audience. For those unable to attend the panel, the program was recorded and the discussion appears in this two-part report. The panel was co-chaired by Robert S. Shoemaker, vice president of San Francisco Mining Associates, and Laurence D. Hartzog, principal engineer with Bechtel Civil and Minerals Inc., San Francisco, CA. Panel members included: George Potter, consultant, Tucson, AZ; Kenneth B. Hall, metallurgical superintendent, Homestake Mining Co., Lead, SD; and Donald M. Duncan, resident manager, Pinson Mining Co., Winnemucca, NV. There have been several types of carbon-in-pulp adsorption vessels in use, such as the Dorr-type agitator, the simple propeller agitated tank, the Pachuca tank, and, lately, the draft tube-type of agitated tank. Which one of these is best and why? Potter: On the selection of the most appropriate adsorption vessel, there is a considerable difference of opinion that stems largely from the fact that every ore is different. The mesh of grind, the pulp solids, and the apparent viscosity of the pulp as caused by its clay content and chemical conditions all differ. The traditional Dorr agitator with the slow speed center sweep and either peripheral or center column air lifts has worked quite well on the finer grinds of all minus 65 and probably 70-80% minus 200 mesh. Pachuca tanks have also been successful and they may be capable of handling a coarser feed than the traditional Dorr tank. One uranium mill, for example, handles minus 28 mesh sandstone ore in a Pachuca. The most recent development and one that commands consideration is the draft tube agitator in which there is a turbine which closely fits inside a draft tube. Velocity in the tube is carefully calculated to avoid undue shear and thus abrasion of the carbon. The objective in all cases, of course, is to mix the granular carbon, which is typically 6 x 16 mesh, very gently but thoroughly in a slurry with minimum carbon abrasion. I do not know that there is one outstanding choice just yet and I have been unable so far to get information on C-I-P service for ore grinds as coarse as 35 mesh. Duncan: The major advantage of draft tube-type is the ease of startup. At the Pinson plant we installed draft tube-type agitators but it is too early to quote experience with them. We also haven't operated long enough to determine just what our carbon loss is. The advantage, of course, in the draft tube design is that it requires only about one-third the horsepower input of a conventional agitator. If it has no other advantages, it has that. Hall: The type of vessel most suitable for C-I-P adsorption depends on the type of ore treated and the prevailing operating conditions. In most cases, a deep tank with turbine-type mechanical agitator and low speed tip velocities would be satisfactory. Turbine-type impellers give a positive type of agitation which assures optimum ion contact and reduces short circuiting. Thorough aeration is possible with an air sparge properly located. A mechanical agitator can easily be started up after an outage, but it is usually necessary to drain and wash out a Dorr rake-type or Pachuca before restarting. The turbine-type impeller requires more power, but maintenance costs are negligible if rubber covered impellers are used. Carbon losses are minimal. In smaller plants, Pachuca type agitators provide adequate aeration and agitation. Bob Polak, Occidental Minerals (from the floor): Mr. Hall, you favor the mechanical-type agitator with the preface that the proper design is critical. Could you elaborate on this for us? Hall: The most important thing is low tip speed to prevent carbon attrition. I think the impeller should be sized so that you get a good sweeping action toward the bottom of the tank, across its bottom, up the sides, and back to the center. The advantage of the draft tube is that you get a more positive agitation and you probably get improved aeration too. Polak: Do you know of anyone using an upflow mechanical agitator rather than a downflow unit? Hall: I think that Bob Wilson at Custom Equipment has designed one where he has located the sparge directly beneath the impeller. The air bubbles are broken up by the impeller as the slurry passes through it. The slurry flows upward, outward, down the sides, and, again, back to the center of the tank. I don't know that any tanks of this design are in commercial use. Hans Von Michaelis, Randol International (from the floor): A question to any of the panelists on flat bottom versus conical bottom Pachucas. Hall: I would say the conical bottom would be most suitable in most cases. Some plants have experienced problems with flat bottom Pachucas in that they have a tendency to sand in on the sides of the tank so only the center of the tank is active. Duncan: With our draft tube tank we placed an inverted cone in the center of the tank bottom and blanked off the bottom comer around the circumference of the tank to facilitate movement of the pulp. Other than that, as far as conical bottom tanks are concerned, I'm generally opposed to them because of the cost and height differential. Larry Kramer, Kennecott Minerals Co. (from the floor): Mr. Duncan, you mentioned that the draft tube-type could be agitated with about one-third the horse-power applied to a conventional propellor agitated tank. I have trouble trying to pin down that kind of number. Could you give a bit of rationale as to why that mechanism has a lower horsepower requirement? Duncan: I think it has to do with the fact that below the propeller you have straightening vanes. The pulp, which is flowing vertically downward, is turned and flows upward again without any recirculation. You have an inherently less horse-power requirement in that type of tank. The one-third horsepower requirement is a number I obtained from Lightnin, which supplied us with details of the draft tube. There is probably much more recirculation with a conventional impeller type that is wasted motion. Potter: Last week I saw some agitators in South Africa with short draft tubes and actual turbine-type impellers. This plant was handling 200 kt of ore per month. The tanks were flat bottomed, and the agitation appeared to be quite satisfactory.

Introduction Surface mining is a business, and the objective of most businesses is to make as much money as possible within certain responsible constraints. Businesses normally measure their potential to make money by estimating the discounted cash flow rate of return on new projects or the net present value for ongoing projects. These estimators of profitability are calculated using the following well-known equation: [ ] where i is the year, n is the total number of years, A, is the after tax net cash generation in year I, r is the discount rate and NPV is the net present value. In its simplest form, when the value of r makes the NPV equal to zero, the discounted cash flow-rate of return (DCF-ROR) is defined. The maximum economically recoverable reserve is identified at the point where the NPV or DCF-ROR is at a maximum. Depending on the measure used (DCF-ROR or discount rate) for calculating the NPV, the definition of recoverable reserve will be different for exactly the same deposit. Maximization of the measure of profitability and the economically recoverable reserves should not be separated from the mining method and sequence of exploiting the reserve. The surface mining methods may involve multiple-pass development of the resource, mining to the ultimate limit in one pass or a combination of the two methods with backfill. Multiple-pass development When planning a multiple-pass mining operation, it is important to determine the width of pit expansions that are appropriate for a specific situation. Production personnel typically want wide, open work areas where operations can be set up to run at peak efficiency. While this is understandable, the trade-off between highly efficient production operations and an overinvestment in stripping should be carefully weighed. As long as safety is not compromised, a few cents per bank cubic yard increase in operating cost due to lower productivity by working in more confined spaces may well be offset by a decrease in the overall short-term stripping requirements. A mini study on productivity and cost should help quantify this cost before deciding on minimum phasing requirements. The bigger challenge associated with establishing smaller work areas is securing operations and management buy-in to marginally lower productivity when reporting results. When cost reduction is the important management goal and everyone is focusing on unit costs, one sometimes loses sight of the goal of total cost management and, even more importantly, maximum profitability. The first pit should be defined by the first grouping of recoverable mineral that has the highest after-tax unit value and forms a feasible mining unit. The assumed mining of the first pit should be followed by the assumed mining of the second most profitable practical pit or pit expansion. If this process of grouping and sequencing is followed until the profitability approaches zero, the general sequence required to extract the maximum economically recoverable reserve is identified. The curve in Fig. 1 is constructed for a rate of production, R, and a quality management strategy, Q, by calculating the NPV for a series of sequences, with each sequence assuming that the operations are terminated on successively lower profit pits. These values are plotted to form the curve in Fig. 1. If the operation ceases on a pit that has too high of a profit, opportunity is lost, and the NPV is lower than the maximum. The NPV curve peaks and starts to decline before the zero-profit pit is assumed mined. This occurs because the money invested in advanced stripping would have made more money invested at the discount rate than by mining the next pit expansion. Therefore, the maximum economically recoverable reserve is defined by the pit limit corresponding to the maximum NPV. There may be an opportunity to refine the definition of the "ultimate pit" around the maximum-value point. The precise definition of the ultimate pit early in the mine life may or may not be important today, depending on how far off in the future these limits will be reached. Introduction As with many gravity concentration processes, pneumatic concen¬tration traces its origin in antiquity. The use of winnowing to separate chaff from grain has long been known, and such procedures were undoubtedly practiced in ancient civilizations for the concentration of ores and the separation of slag from metal whenever specific gravity, size, and shape differences were favorable. Taggart142 has reported on the use of dry rockers and dry panning techniques for use with gold ores in arid regions such as Western Australia. The present day air table was developed in the last century for this purpose. Devices and Processes Classification. All classifiers make a separation on the basis of size, shape, and specific gravity. In addition to specific gravity and size, particle shape factor is often particularly important to pneumatic processes, and advantage is taken of the fact that both flat and fibrous particles settle at velocities substantially lower than that of their equiv¬alent spheres. Another factor of importance in this process is the bulk density of the material since substances such as exfoliated ver¬miculite or partially opened fibrils of asbestos have bulk densities significantly lower than those of the pure in situ mineral. Winnowing takes advantage of all of these physical factors to affect a separation starting with a closely sized feed, and vermiculite has been separated from rock by this process.142 When air classifiers are used to size minerals, the separation will often not be perfect because heavy particles will respond similarly to somewhat coarser light particles while flat, elongated, and low bulk density particles will act as would particles finer than the cut size. An example of a classification process that also results in concentration is the zig-zag classifier"' used to separate paper from glass, metal bottles, and cans during the recycle of municipal solid waste. Application of this process to minerals showing the proper specific gravity, size, and shape differ¬ences is obvious. An important device of this type is an air-aspirated screen used to remove asbestos from its associated rock during the dry processing of that mineral.144 The raw ore is crushed and screened and the asbes¬tos removed by aspiration from the surface of the screen by virtue of its shape and low bulk density. Hindered Settling. Based on the discussion in the section on "Hindered Settling Concentration and Jigging," the use of air devices could be anticipated in desert areas or where moisture may be deleteri¬ous to the product to be separated. Such processes have three major defects: (1) dust may be difficult to contain, (2) fines are difficult to process, and (3) the process is inherently less efficient than are wet processes as may be seen from Eqs. 3 and 4 in the section on "Hindered Settling Concentration and Jigging p. 4-47." Taggart142 has reported on the use of both dry panning and a dry rocker for gold separation in and regions. The dry panning makes use of winnowing, defection on the basis of specific gravity and shape during fall, and hindered settling. Prescreened placer material is poured from one pan to another as air blows across the falling stream. The process is repeated many times with hand picking to produce a rough concentrate. Magnetic minerals are then removed, and the residue, one grain deep in the pan, is air blown. In dry rocking the gravel is sized on a steeply inclined screen with the undersize fed to a riffle box with a porous bottom which is blown from underneath."' This device was the forerunner of the present-day air table. Air Tables and Jigs.145. 146 At least nine types of these devices have been developed, all but two of them for coal. While the devices used for coal may be characterized as pneumatic jigs, pneumatic tables, and pneumatic landers,145 only pneumatic jigs survive today. The same is true for ores.'" In these devices presized particles are fed to the separator which consists of an inclined vibrating conveyor with a porous surface through which air is carefully introduced to form a fluid bed. The lighter particles are lifted by the air out of uphill conveyance and float downhill, while the heavier particles in contact with the surface are conveyed uphill by the vibrator. Typically both transverse and longitudinal slopes are used. A plan view of a Triple S air table and the type of separation made is shown in Fig. 44.147 Because of its external appearance, the device has been called an air table, although it functions essentially as a jig. However, some of the asymetrical acceleration conveying function of a standard shak¬ing table is also performed by the eccentric vibrator incorporated into this device. Low pressure air is admitted below the vibrating table surface consisting of cloth (e.g., canvas), porous plastic, woven wire, or punched metal supported on a wire mesh or grid. As with a shaking table, the device produces a concentrate, middlings, and tailings. The middlings are recycled or are subsequently treated on another concentrating device. As with many wet separations, presizing by screening is necessary. The oft-repeated admonition of Professor Richards, "Separation without classification is damnation," is cer¬tainly true here. In this way a small heavy particle which might weigh the same as a large light particle and thus report to the same place on the air table has already been removed in the sizing step. Air tables are almost universally encased with a canopy to remove dust by aspiration. Some concentration may also be achieved in this step when favorable specific gravity, size, and shape differences are present. Applications Ore Separations. Air tables were originally developed for ore separations, and they find application in and regions or where water is deleterious or inconvenient to use or remove (e.g., small tonnage materials already dried). They have been used for asbestos, bauxite, calcite, cassiterite, columbite-tentalite, diatomaceous earth, fluorite, gilsonite, graphite, kyanite, manganese minerals, mica, managite, perlite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, vermiculite, and uraninite ores. More recently, air tables have found favor in separating a wide variety of secondary materials such as abrasive grains, bone char, catalysts, fiberglass, scrap glass, scrap wire from its insulation, prills from slag, dross and coke from metal or from each other, metal from crushed crucibles, lead from plastic in old batteries, and cubic particles from flat ones. The kinetics of gold-bromide loading onto activated carbon was investigated in a batch stirred reactor. Based on a second-order equation, the amount of gold adsorbed by the carbon was correlated with time. From a 30ºC solution containing 25 ppm Au and 0.8 g/L carbon, the rate constant for gold-bromide species onto activated carbon ranged from 0.27 x 10-3 to 1.2 x 10-3 (kg/t)-1 min-1. The equilibrium saturation capacity (Qe) was 36 ±3.0 kg/t from the same system. The rate of loading increased with increasing temperature and decreasing particle size, pH and solution gold concentration. The calculated activation energy (Ea) was 8.8 kcal/mole, significantly higher than those reported for physical adsorption. The equilibrium saturation capacity (Qe) increased with increasing concentration of gold in solution but was independent of other variables such as temperature, agitation speed, particle size and pH. These rate constants and equilibrium saturation capacity for the gold-bromide species are higher than those reported for the gold-cyanide systems.

The objective of the Cerrejon Coal Project is to mine and export a minimum of 15 million metric tons per year of bituminous coal from the Guajira Pennisula in Colombia, South America. Major components of the project will include an open pit mine, 150 km railroad, marine terminal for storage and shipping, and accommodations for the support personnel. This paper primarily reviews the coal handling facilities at the mine and port which will include crushers, conveyors, silos, stacker/reclaimers, and a shiploader. Of special interest is the design concept for unloading bottom-dump railcars, a programmable controller control system with automatic stacking and reclaiming, a linear-type shiploader, and 2.4m wide conveyors running at 5 m/sec.

The Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project is a $3-billion project that will link Dulles International Airport with the downtown center of Washington D.C. by way of a single seat train ride. The project is mostly above ground, but it does include two short, yet complex, tunnels through the area of Tyson?s Corner. The project is being completed in two phases. The Dulles Transit Partners (DTP), led by Bechtel, was awarded the first phase, a $1.6-bil-lion phase that includes 17 km (11 miles) of track with five stations. At Tyson?s Corner, the project includes twin 730-m- (2,400-ft-) long, 6-m- (20-ft-) diameter tunnels. Bechtel is self-performing construction for the $1.6-billion design-build job. Gall Zeidler Consultants was hired by DTP as designer for the NATM tunnel portion of Phase 1, and Beton-und-Monierbau was hired as tunnel subcontractor. Tyson?s Corner is an affluent and congested area that sits 152 m (500 ft) above sea level. To get through the area, it was decided that tunnels would be the best option with the least amount of disturbance to the surrounding areas. However, with extremely shallow groundcover above some points as well as soft soil throughout, the tunnels are also the most complex aspect of Phase 1. About 213 m (700 ft) was constructed utilizing the cut-and-cover method. The remaining 518 m (1,700 ft) is being constructed using the New Austrian Tunneling Method, which integrates the principles of the behavior of rock and soil masses under load, and monitoring the performance of underground construction during construction. ?The tunnel only falls 2 m (7 ft) from one end to the other and we pass through two soil conditions, they are both soft ground,? said Dominic Cerulli, tunnel task manager for Bechtel. ?Soft ground is very tricky because you have to close the ring in a timely manner to minimize settlements at the surface. If you don?t close the ring quickly to achieve a round structure that?s good in compression, the tunnel could start necking and squatting and the ground above it will settle. We are under major roadways, so excessive settlement would be a bad thing.?

AVAILABLE MACHINES Machines discussed in this section include only rubber tire mounted kerf cutting machines of a self¬propelled electrically powered design. Such machines handle bars up to 4.6 m (15 ft) in length, cutting kerfs of from 115 to 191 mm (4.5 to 7.5 in.). The basic design concept of all machines currently in production is very similar. The chassis features dual driving wheels on the cutter-bar end, fixed directly to the main frame. The steering wheels on the outby end of the frame are articulated in some manner to keep all four wheels on the floor over uneven bottom. Machine power for tramming, and all other functions except powering the cutting chain, is furnished from a pump motor that drives the specific pump or pumps required by a given machine. The cutter chain is driven through a mechanical drive train from a separate electric motor having no duty other than driving the chain. The general arrangement of a cutting machine is shown in Fig. 1; two types of machines, with their specifications are shown in Figs. 2 through 5. A hydraulically powered cable normally is included to eliminate the need for manual cable handling and make this a one-man machine. A bug duster, though optional, is needed for most applications. The bug duster is an hydraulically driven scroll conveyor located directly behind the cutter chain drive sprocket. Its function is to move the cuttings away from the sprocket to prevent them from packing up in this area and consuming a lot of machine power to further pulverize them. Available machines vary from models 610 mm (24 in.) high that can cut horizontally only from 203 mm (8 in.) below ground line to 229 mm (9 in.) above, to machines 1143 mm (45 in.) high that can cut in any plane from 178 mm (7 in.) below the ground line to 3.7 m (12 ft) above it. Most currently manufactured machines fall in the 17 200 to 20 400 kg (38,000 to 45,000 lb) weight range, but can be dis¬assembled for underground installation where weight and size are a problem. Maximum teardown results in all pieces having a weight of 5400 kg (12,000 lb) or less and a size allowing passage through a 1.2 x 2.1-m (4x7-ft) opening. Further reduction in either size or weight of the parts becomes a serious problem. Machines currently being manufactured are avail¬able for use with power supplies of 250 v dc; 500 v dc; 440, 550, or 950 v ac (60 Hz). Also available are machines for use on 415, 500, and 950 v 50 Hz. De¬signs to allow operation on other voltages of either 50 or 60 Hz can be made available without any serious problems. As of September 1977, a typical medium-seam ma¬chine without the extra options needed for unusual conditions, but fully equipped to operate, was selling for about $185,000. In order to realize the intelligent mining of coal seam with large dip Angle, this paper adopts the methods of large proportion variable Angle loading threedimensional physical simulation experiment, numerical simulation and field measurement with digital twin technology. The hydraulic support with large dip Angle and large mining height is used as the prototype to design the physical entity model of 1:5 hydraulic support, combined with modeling and graphics rendering technology. Angle, displacement and load sensors were selected and placed to realize the data channel between the lower machine and the upper computer of the digital twin system, so that the position and load data of the physical entity model and the twin model of the laboratory hydraulic support could be shared in real time. Moreover, the multi-dimensional dynamic and static load transfer law and the position evolution characteristics of the support and surrounding rock under different inclination angles were analyzed. The results show that: with the increase of the Angle of the working face, first, the initial support force required by the support decreases, and the damage degree of the roof increases; When the roof is soft, the lifting operation can avoid the instability of the support to a certain extent. Second, under the action of positive pressure, the load of the top beam under different angles is balanced; Under the backpushing action, the load in the upper inclined area of the shield beam increases gradually, while the load in the lower inclined area decreases gradually. Under the lateral push, the load changes periodically, and the load in each cycle is increased compared with that in the previous cycle. Third, the numerical simulation analysis shows that the load on the lower bracket is less than that on the upper bracket, and the load on the bottom of all the columns is greater than that on the middle and upper brackets. In order to reduce the impact of the columns on the bottom plate or the base, it is necessary to improve the anti-subsidence ability of the base. Finally, according to the research results, the improvement and optimization measures of the support are put forward, and the field test shows that these measures effectively solve the problems of sinking, sliding and tipping of the support in the working face with large inclination Angle, and obtain good application results.

Forecasting mined grade variability from exploration information is a challenging task in mine planning. For effective planning of activities such as workplace scheduling, ore grade quality control etc. development of realistic numerical/simulation models of in-situ variability from exploration information is an essential first step. Geostatistical conditional simulation (GCS) is one of the well known methods to develop these simulations. Recently, stochastic fractal models based on the assumptions of scale-in variance and self-similarity have been used for developing simulations of several natural phenomena. It has been suggested that these models might permit generation of short-scale variability information from exploration data with greater fidelity when the data satisfies the attendant assumptions. In this paper the stochastic fractal models are reviewed and their relationship to geostatistical variogram models is examined. A comparison of the two simulation techniques has been per-formed using coal sulfur data from a mined out coal property. The results of this comparative analysis are also presented in the paper.

One of the Northwest Mining Association's guide-lines is: "If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always gotten." Another way of saying this is, simply, "when the road curves, don't refuse to turn." Our industry has been roundly criticized for living in the old political world, and, I believe, justifiably so. Until about 20 years ago, members of both houses of Congress deferred to specialists among their members for mining legislation. This was true for all public lands and natural resource issues, and were referred to as the mining bloc, or the timber bloc, or the ranching bloc. We felt safe, and to a large degree, were safe in the sense that western members of the US House of Representatives and of the US Senate understood the need for multiple use of public lands, and the need for the natural resources they supply. They also knew what it takes to stay in business and how to create the economic atmosphere that encourages private industry to find and provide the natural resources. Almost daily, members of our industry bemoan the destructive effects that current regulations, let alone new proposals, are having on American industry. And, there are some intriguing aspects for us to ponder. First, the specific complaint about the government is not regulation per se, but rather that the rules or policies don't make sense. We recognize that few understand our industry, but we have assumed that the government will rely on people experienced and knowledgeable in the area being brought under government controls. There was a time that this assumption was valid, but it is no longer true since we have entered the era of the professional regulator. Much like the MBA who believes that a professional manager can manage anywhere, the new breed of regulator sincerely believes that process is the key to developing effective regulations or programs. They reason the process virtually assures that all the pertinent facts will inevitably come to light and, after receiving appropriate considerations, will result in the proper decision being reached and implemented. Unfortunately, following the process also allows politics to play a new and greater role than ever before, since information based on what can only be called weird-science can now be presented to the professional regulator and accepted as fact. Regulators do not have the background to question the basic tenets of the conclusion being presented to them. To add insult to injury, testimony from people in the industry involved, intended to set the record straight, is too easily discounted as being merely self-serving. A second aspect is that the question of why the associations aren't doing more to stop poorly conceived legislative and regulatory proposals, or to counter the ever-increasing influence of the selfappointed public interest groups is being increasingly discussed. This is occurring despite the fact that there is a higher level of involvement and closer cooperation between the various associations than ever before. This raises a most important question: where are we going wrong? In the last 20 years or so, major changes have taken place. A new philosophy, taking advantage of the public's recognition of need to protect our environment, has swept through the nation, resulting in a whole new body of law enacted to assure environmental protection. We all acknowledge the need to prevent undue degradation during the course of mineral development, and we all consider ourselves to be responsible stewards of the land, because we live and work in the outdoors and know the importance of environmental protection. The changes in the federal statutes apply now to every aspect of mineral discovery, development, and production, and assure adequate reclamation of lands when we are done. Along with the positive changes, are a constant barrage of attempts to stop public land use, or stop mining, or stop any new economic development, ostensibly to "protect the environment," but often reflecting a hidden agenda of social reform. These types of extreme, irrational, and just plain impossible proposals are everyday occurrences, but we have not geared up to challenge all the proposals which could end mining. Instead, we did what we always had done. The road turned, but we didn't. And we wondered why those who had always protected mining weren't doing their job, and why we were having such limited success in reining in the regulators.
