The mining complex, which the Mines Gaspé division of Noranda Mines Limited has operated in Murdochville since 1954, includes open pit and underground mines, two mills, one leaching plant and a smelter. The under- ground mining uses predominantly a large scale room and pillar method, rooms 15 m wide, 30 m high and 300 m long being common. Ore production is effected by 4.5 m3 front-end loaders and 32-tonne trucks powered respectively by 225 and 325 kW diesels. Daily dust and gas readings show that air quality can be maintained at an acceptable level with much less ventilation than that normally specified. This paper emphasizes the point that air requirements should be based on Air Quality Standards, thus allowing an operation to benefit from favourable conditions or from improvements such as exhaust treatment, fuel alteration, etc.

Every year more and more mining companies are entering joint ventures to look for minerals. Large companies join large companies, small companies join small companies, and large companies join small companies. Mining companies join oil companies, chemical companies, machinery companies, and companies with no other connection to the minerals business. And well they might, for here is a way for both minerals-oriented companies and those that have no background or knowledge of the minerals business to get actively involved in an outwardly-attractive but high-risk enterprise with the chance to participate in a lucrative minerals find. Thus, for reasons beyond those normally associated with joint ventures in many other fields, corporations, companies, groups, and even individuals are looking to joint exploration ventures as the answer to all problems of getting into or staying in mining.

Spontaneous combustion in western U.S. coal mines has been recognized as a serious problem which requires unique solutions. Methods have been developed for longwall mining which rely on the existence of an oxygen-deficient atmosphere in the gob for control of the spontaneous combustion hazard rather than the use of bleeder systems. Monitoring of the gob atmosphere is required to protect against the possibility of an explosion and to detect spontaneous heatings. Data from an example mine employing such a system is included to illustrate normal gob gas trends and is compared to abnormal trends which resulted from and were indicative of a fire. Under normal circumstances the oxygen (O2) and carbon monoxide (CO) concentrations decline rapidly as the longwall face retreats. Samples taken from a leaking seal in the example mine prior to a spontaneous heating showed virtually no oxygen depletion, contained erratic CO concentrations, and indicated the existence of hydrogen, a fire indicator. The appearance of an abnormal trend in the gob atmosphere can be used as an early warning of spontaneous heatings.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been evaluating longwall mining-induced strata fractures and their impacts on casing stability of Marcellus shale gas wells located in longwall pillars. To understand the extent of overburden fractures after longwall mining, NIOSH researchers drilled a post-mining corehole into the fractured strata above the Pittsburgh coal seam longwall gob. Knowing the extent of the fracture zone height will help gas operators minimize the hazards of drilling into longwall gobs. The core was retrieved from the surface down to the top of the gob void. Various fractures were encountered varying from 35 to 64°, depending on lithologic type and relative closeness to the gob. The longwall panel dimension was 457-m wide and 3657-m long, in which the total fracture zone height was found to be at 141 m and the hydraulic connected fracture zone at 87.7 m above the top of the Pittsburgh seam. In addition to core drilling through the gob, FLAC3D modeling was also used to simulate the formation of fracture zone and the orientations of longwall-induced fractures. This study provides much-needed evidence on the fracture zone of Pittsburgh seam longwall gobs to help gas operators avoid potential hazards associated with drilling through highly fractured zones in longwall gobs.

Magnesium is the eighth most abundant element in the earth's crust and the third most plentiful element in seawater. It is found in more than sixty minerals and in brines and seawater as a magnesium salt. One of the more important magnesium minerals is magnesium carbonate, MgCO3, with a theoretical maximum magnesia, MgO, content of 47.6%; this carbonate form represents the world's largest source of magnesia. The next most used sources for magnesia are magnesia-rich brines and seawater, where it occurs as magnesium sulfate and magnesium chloride. Other commercially important magnesium-bearing minerals are dolomite, CaMg(CO3)2, which serves the aggregate industry as well as the chemical industry; brucite, Mg(OH)2, which is used in the production of both caustic and sintered magnesia; olivine, ([MgFe]2-SiO2), which serves the refractory and heat storage industries; talc, (H2Mg3(SiO3)4), which serves several industries as a filler and as an ingredient in cosmetics; and serpentine, (H4Mg3SiO9). All these minerals are of commercial value because of the desirable characteristics given to them by magnesia and by its placement in the crystal structure. These minerals are the starting raw materials for a wide range of products. These include the production of magnesium metal, and several grades of magnesia used for the production of both sintered magnesia for refractory manufacture and lighter fired caustic magnesia, the latter is used in fluxes, fillers, insulation, cements, decolorants, fertilizers, chemicals, in the treatment of waste water including pH control, and in the removal of sulfur compounds from exhaust stacks. Magnesite is one of several major minerals possessing a dual character, i.e., non-metallic industrial mineral because of its principal end use as a calcined/dead burned raw material in non-metallic end products and magnesium metal. A large percentage of the magnesia used to produce magnesium metal comes from seawater1 brines. The total primary metal production worldwide is about 350 ktpy. This report reviews magnesite solely as an industrial non- metallic raw material. Magnesite for most refractory purposes must have a content of sintered magnesia above 85%, with a preference for those sources that have the potential for 90 to 98% magnesia values. Dolomite, used in large tonnages because of its physical properties in the construction industry, also has a use in the chemical and the refractory industry. In its calcined form, dolomite is used as a slag addition in the making of steel, and it is used in a high-purity calcine to precipitate magnesium hydroxide from brines or seawater. The precipitated magnesium hydroxide is intermediate for the production of deadburned clinker for refractories and the production of magnesium metal. In many cases the high-purity magnesium hydroxide obtained by precipitation with calcined dolomite, or in some cases limestone, has supplanted much of the world's production of magnesia from the natural mineral magnesite. This is especially true of the United States and in major industrialized areas of Europe and Japan. The best known of the minerals directly and widely exploited for its magnesia content is magnesite (MgCO3), one of the calcite group of rhombohedra1 carbonates, which includes calcite (CaCO3), siderite (Fe2CO3), and rhodocrosite (MnCO3), among others. The members of this group enter into a wide range of substitutional solid solutions when the positive ions have similar radii. The radii of magnesium and iron ions are within 6% of each other; hence magnesite and siderite form a complete series, of which the mineral breunnerite (ferroan magnesite) is a well known end member. The radii of calcium ion is 36% larger than that of magnesium ion and only limited substitution exists at each end of the MgC03-CaCO3 series. Dolomite is not a member of the calcite group, but it occurs when calcium and magnesium ions alternate in equal number in an ordered structure among carbonate ions. The result of this relationship is that calcite and dolomite are commonly found intermixed with magnesite. They occur, commonly, as identifiable crystal entities, which can be separated to a varying degree from the magnesite by benefication techniques. Magnesite, when pure, contains 47.8% MgO and 52.2% CO,. The pure mineral is found occasionally as transparent crystals resembling calcite. Magnesite principally contains variable amounts of the carbonates, oxides, and the silicates of iron, calcium, manganese, and aluminum. Although the genesis of natural magnesite deposits can be complex, it is distinguished in nature in two distinct physical forms, namely crystalline, (with a wide range of visible crystal sizes) and cryptocrystalline, sometimes referred to as amorphous, where the crystal size is not detectable to the eye and will range from 1 to 10 pm. The two types not only differ in crystal structure but in the sizes of the deposits and in modes of formations. The crystalline form has a Mohs hardness of 3.5 to 4.0. The color range is from white to black with shades of yellow, blue, red, or gray. The color is not a significant indicator of purity but in a given deposit an experienced person can often roughly grade the magnesite by observing color and crystallinity. Macrocrystalline deposits occur in relatively few, but generally large, deposits on the order of several million tons. The ore shows a marble-like crystal structure and belongs to the sedimentary or metasomatic groups of origin. The cryptocrystalline variety of magnesite frequently occurs in many small deposits, although there are exceptions. Cryptocrystalline magnesite is typically massive with no cleavage and is sometimes descriptively called bone magnesite. The fracture is usually conchoidal, with a hardness of 3.5 to 5.0. The color is mainly white, but it can have tints of yellow, orange, or buff. Accessory silaceous minerals such as serpentine, quartz, or chalcedony are usually present. Calcium minerals are normally absent or in low concentration, this contrasting with the macrocrystalline form where calcium minerals are almost invariably present and some- times in high concentration. A hydrocyclone is a piece of equipment commonly used as a classifier in mill circuit operations. Traditionally, hydrocyclone performance is characterized by the classification efficiency parameter, such as cut size (d50c), sharpness of separation () and bypass (Rf ). A plethora of endeavors have already been made to develop parametric models to determine hydrocyclone performance that correlate design and process variables. In contrast to those studies, we made an attempt to develop an approach to derive required design parameters purely from hydrodynamic principles that provides a platform to optimize the operation of a hydrocyclone for a given application. In this selection methodology, we calculated the differential pressure at the air core, as well as the tangential velocity at the boundary of the air core from the vortex principle in a confined geometry at different operating regimes. A series of experiments were conducted using Weir’s Cavex® hydrocylone where process variables—such as solids concentration and feed flowrates—were experimentally studied to determine the key classification parameters. For the validation of the current approach we used the same process variables to derive design parameters and compared them with the existing design. The current approach can provide insights towards the selection of design parameters and can be useful for mining industry professionals to optimize different operating parameters of hydrocyclones to achieve the best performance.

Standing supports have been used in coal mines for decades to enhance roof support capability. Occasionally, standing supports are used to resist the lateral movement of spalled ribs. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are conducting a testing program for standing supports to investigate the effect of lateral loading on their vertical loading capacities and the factors affecting their lateral loading capacities. The Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) was used to determine the response of steel props to vertical and horizontal loadings. Finite element models (FEMs) were developed and verified using the tested steel props. Prop models were used to study the effect of a range of roof and floor materials — gray shale, shale and claystone — on the critical buckling loads of the steel props.

A common casualty of modern openpit mine optimization is the assurance that the resulting design is actually achievable. Optimized mine plans that consider value and a bare minimum of precedence constraints do not, in general, translate into practical, operational mine designs that can be used in the field. Ultimate pits may come to a sharp point at the bottom. Schedules may require taking small parcels of material from many disparate areas of the pit in a single period, and grade control polygons may be ragged, narrow and not minable with realistic equipment. In this paper, these three fundamental openpit mine optimization problems are addressed by encoding them as maximum satisfiability problems. Maximum satisfiability provides a useful framework for problems that are nonlinear and may guarantee the optimality that metaheuristics cannot.

Hazen Research, Inc., has developed a new process for removing pyritic sulfur and ash from coal. Feed coal is contacted with iron carbonyl vapors, Fe(CO)5, at 190°C which puts a thin skin of magnetic material on the pyrite and ash, but does not affect the coal. Thus, low intensity magnetic separators yield a nonmagnetic coal, low in sulfur and ash, and a magnetic refuse, high in sulfur and ash. Results are given for clean coal produced by this method. A comparison is made between results of the magnetic process and the U. S. Bureau of Mines two-stage flotation process cleaning identical samples of Pittsburgh Coal. Capital and operating costs of the two cleaning methods are discussed.

The paper highlights the optic fiber sensors customization capabilities, how they smoothly fit precast concrete lining processes and TBM operations, and how a lifelong service monitoring can be achieved. An overview of readings’ evolution during excavation concludes the paper.INTRODUCTIONPavoncelli Bis is a 10 km hydraulic tunnel designed to by-pass the existing Pavoncelli tunnel which experienced severe damages during the 1980 Irpino-Lucano earthquake, in south of Italy (Barla 2009). Pavoncelli Bis excavation work commenced in 1988-90, however, when excavation approached pk. 0+583 in 1992, water percolations became more and more consistent and resulted in work suspension. The tunnel was eventually sealed at pk. 0+383, leaving a flooded section between pk. 0.383 and pk. 0+583. Work resumed in 2012 where EPB-TBM excavation was adopted to cross the flooded section and to overcome complex hydro-geological conditions in various lito-types and, in particular, in the Varicolori Clay-shales area (Figure 1).Consequently, stress evolution monitoring is extremely important during construction and during the service life of tunnel lining in clay-shales and in faults areas. In particular, the paper focuses on the monitoring system proposed for the newly EPB-TBM excavated portion from pk 0+583 onwards where optic fiber sensing technology was chosen for its reading stability and reliability in presence of water and its ability to be connected in series and remotely interrogated at kilometers of distance. FBGS OPTICAL FIBER SENSOR TECHNOLOGYFiber Bragg Grating Sensors (FBGS) are gaining increasing attention in the field of experimental stress analysis. Basically, Fiber Optic Bragg Sensors are strain-measuring devices and therefore provide many of the advantages of the well-known metal foil strain gages (Kreuzer 2007).Bragg gratings are written into so called single-mode fibers. These fibers consist of a very small inner core of 4 to 9 µm diameter and an outer part (cladding) of pure glass (SiO2) of 125 µm diameter. The difference of refraction indexes between inner core and cladding causes the light to propagate only inside the small core."

With its 2011 acquisition of rival equipment company Bucyrus International, Caterpillar added underground mining and large shovels to its line of products and further solidified its standing as the leading mining equipment manufacturer in the world with solutions for every aspect of mining. When Caterpillar spent $8.8 billion to acquire Bucyrus, the global mining business was flourishing, as mining companies around the world worked to keep up with demands for nearly every commodity. Flash forward to 2013, and the global mining landscape looks very different. Lower demand for raw material from China and India and falling commodity prices have forced most mining companies to pull back on their production. The reductions from the mining industry have hit equipment makers like Caterpillar and Komatsu hard. In October, Caterpillar reported that its quarterly earnings had fallen 44 percent. The changing conditions have also changed the narrative from Caterpillar and other equipment makers to customers from offering solutions to move the most tons per hour, to now offering solutions for the lowest cost per ton. In September, Caterpillar hosted some of its mining customers and the trade press at its Tinaja Hills Demonstration and Learning Center near Tucson, AZ to talk about its range of products, from its MineStar System designed to help increase efficiency through better equipment management and planning, all the way up to the massive Cat 7495 and 7495HF electric rope shovel lines acquired through the Bucyrus takeover

This study compares three different techniques — decision tree, artificial neural network (ANN) and multivariate regression analysis (MVRA) — for predicting blast-induced ground vibrations in some Indian tunneling projects. The models’ performance was also compared with site-specific conventional predictor equations. A database consisting of 137 vibration records was randomly divided into training and testing sets for model generation. The results indicate that the decision tree is best suited to predicting vibrations. Furthermore, the decision tree suggests that the intensity of near-field ground vibrations is mainly affected by the total charge fired in a round, whereas the intensity of far-field vibrations is governed by maximum charge per delay and charge per hole.

Several years ago, North American mining companies began to realize they needed to expand their spheres to remain viable. This strategy has been successful, according to Robert W. Schafer. Today, companies from other continents have also recognized the need for an international view for long-term growth and viability, he said. Schafer is vice president for exploration with Kinross Gold. He was the program chairman and moderator of the keynote session at the 1997 SME annual meeting, held in Denver, CO, Feb. 23-27. The theme of the meeting was "Minerals - Serving the Global Community." A record attendance of more than 6,000 people participated in the meeting, which featured 415 exhibitors occupying 582 booths. The title of the keynote session was "Corporate Perspectives on a Global Minerals Industry." Each of the three keynote speakers discussed a different perspective of a global minerals industry.

The goal of the U.S. nuclear waste management program is to provide assurance that existing and future nuclear waste from military and civilian activities, including spent fuel from the once-through nuclear power cycle, can be isolated from the biosphere so as to pose no significant threat to public health and safety. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is responsible for defining and implementing this national waste management effort. The Environ- mental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) are responsible for providing a framework of criteria, standards, and regulations that will assure that the disposal methods developed by DOE are consistent with the achievement of the goal of safe, long-term waste isolation. Within DOE, the responsibility for implementation of the national waste management program rests with the Office of Nuclear Waste Management. The nuclear waste management effort involves three major activities: The Defense Waste Management Program, the Spent Fuel Storage Program and the Commercial Waste Management Program. The major programmatic effort in the Commercial Waste Management Program is the National Waste Terminal Storage (NWTS) Program.

In the time period from the early 1980's to the present, longwall roof support technology has evolved tremendously. Chock supports and caliper shields were replaced by 2-leg or 4-leg lemniscate shields. The lemniscate linkage for which the support is named offers numerous advantages to the sup-port both as a fabricated structure and to its performance in the mining application. The hydraulic system, which is the dynamic element of the roof support, was essentially unchanged in early lemniscate shields with the exception of the complexity of additional hydraulic circuits to power a canopy tilt cylinder and canopy side-seals. The control of these fluid-powered functions was provided by direct manual control of valves energizing individual functions onboard the roof-support or the adjacent roof-support. This control valve-gear was comprised of multiple individual valves arranged in a "bank" or integrated into a single hydraulic distribution block with a single operating handle to select any independent function.

The Mesquite gold deposit is a recent discovery of Gold Fields Mining Corporation lying 65 kilo- meters northeast of El Centro in Imperial County, California (Figure 1). The deposit is located on the southwestern flank of the Chocolate Mountains and is a bulk-minable, low grade "disseminated" orebody. Although the host rocks of the deposit are part of a regional high-grade metamorphic terrane, abundant brittle fractures, brecciation, and open-space vein fillings indicate that Mesquite mineralization is epithermal. Faulting which postdates the hydrothermal activity has complicated the original geometry of the orebody. Alluvium effectively hides most surface expression of the mineralization, but open-pit mining is now revealing the details of Mesquite geology.

A new technology for ironmaking based on direct gaseous reduction of iron ore concentrate is under development. The process is based on the flash reduction of the concentrate particles in a gaseous reducing agent, such as hydrogen, natural gas, a reducing gas generated by partial combustion of coal, or a combination thereof. This technology is expected to drastically lower CO2 emission and reduce energy consumption by about 38% of the blast furnace requirements. The energy savings are possible largely due to the elimination of pelletization and cokemaking. Process design and simulation using hydrogen as the reductant for iron ore concentrate have been performed. A process flow sheet composed of a flash reactor, heat recovery system, water removal system for purifying recycled hydrogen, and all connecting streams was evaluated using the METSIM software. Ironmaking using two reactors was also designed and simulated, which could reduce the total required amount of hydrogen although it would increase the complexity of the flow sheet and operation.

An example of market development is described. The market in rail-lake movement of coal is vital to a rail carrier because of its location. This market is threatened by nuclear and other competing fuel sources and by depressed all-rail unit train rates, The first step to develop the rail-lake transportation market consists of rate adjustments and tariff changes to force tighter scheduling of mines, railroad, port and boats, and thus reduce cost. The second step provides a surge pile at the port to eliminate most of the seasonal disadvantage of rail-lake movement and reduce car detention at the port to almost zero.

"To more rigorously address tunneling risks to above-ground structures, vulnerability evaluation of all structures along a tunnel route is required. This multi-block area along the route can be considered a district. To fully assess each structure within a tunnel’s zone of influence, a multi-block or district-level model may provide new insights as to risk evaluation and mitigation strategies. However populating such a model with the existing geometry of the built environment poses a major challenge as measured drawings are not readily available for all structures along a tunnel’s route. Cost-effective population of such a model could arguably involve remote sensing data in the form of laser scanning or photogramme-try. However even for unreinforced masonry structures, where external, above-ground geometries can be captured, without a prohibitively expensive building-by-building, in person survey many factors would remain unknown. To consider these uncertainties in an automatic way, a performance assess-ment framework is proposed. Such a framework allows a more rigorous, initial, risk quantification than is currently possible within the simple empirical models generally being used in industry when tunneling risk is initially assessed. This paper introduces (within the allowable space limits of this format) consider-ations for auto-population and application of a district-level, tunnel-risk screening tool. INTRODUCTION Challenging topography, intense urbanization and infrastructure development, combined with limited land availability and a growing awareness of environmental issues have lead to increasing usage of un-derground spaces to control aboveground traffic and provide essential services in metropolitan areas. Tunneling, however, is not without its own risks, especially with respect to aboveground structures whether it be widespread minor damage (Burland et al. 2001) or the more notable, although less fre-quent, large-scale collapses such as the 2003 Shanghai (Allianz 2015) or 2004 Singapore (Magnus et al. 2005) events."
