The rapid decay and disfiguring of stone monuments in urban and desert rural areas has challenged conservators to protect stone surfaces from premature decay. They attempt to halt the natural process of stone decay and possibly to restore the original strength lost mostly by chemical weathering and the loss of binding cement. Ageneral solution is not possible because the physical and chemical characteristics must be considered for different stone types. The failures of stone preservation and restoration are greater in number than the cures. The need for repair of stone decay goes back to evidence of Roman replacement of decaying stone. The presence of excess water in buildings has long been recognized. Moisture tends to enter masonry from air in humid climates, a most important but often underrated factor (Fig. 1) suggesting that sealing should be the answer. Undesirable staining and efflorescence result in accelerated scaling. Today, the great variety of chemicals available to the modem conservator for sealing. consolidating, or hardening stone fall into two very different categories: surface sealers and penetrating stone consolidants, or a combination of both. SEALERS Sealers develop a tight, impervious skin which prevents access of moisture. Surface sealing has saved monuments from decay by eliminating the access of atmospheric humidity. Pressure tends to develop behind the stone surface by moisture escape. Efflorescence, crystal growth action, and freezing can cause considerable spalling (Anderegg, 1949). Flaking results when moisture is trapped behind the sealed surface. Yellowing and blotchiness are also frequently observed. The following sealants are in common use today: linseed oil, paraffin, silicone, urethane, acrylate, and animal blood on stone and adobe. Extensive cracking and yellowing has resulted soon after application. In the past many such treatments have created more problems than cures: 1. Linseed oil and paraffin have been in use for centuries. Embrittlement and yellowing occur rapidly because these are readily attacked by solar ultraviolet radiation. 2. Animal blood as paint has temporarily waterproofed adobe mud and stone masonry. The origin of blood paint has a religious background rooted in the Phoenician and Hebrew cultures. Instant water soluble dried blood can substitute for fresh blood. Winkler (1956) described the history and technique of the use of blood. 3. Silicones have proven very effective and are long lasting. In contrast, acrylates, urethane, and styrene are generally rapidly attacked by UV radiation (Clark et al., 1975). Sealing of Different Rock Types Granitic rocks have a natural porosity traced to 4.5% contraction of quartz, during cooling of the parent magma, compared with only 2% contraction of all other minerals; protection against the hygric forces may require waterproofing of granite in some in- stances. The Egyptian granite obelisk in London is an example. Soon after its relocation from Egypt to London, Cleopatra's Needle was treated, in 1879, with a mixture of Damar resin and wax dissolved in clear petroleum spirit; surface scaling became evident after half a year of exposure to the humid London atmosphere. The treatment of the ancient granite monument from Egypt has denied access of high relative humidity (RH) in London to the trapped salts inherited from the Egyptian desert and has protected the monument from decay (Burgess and Schaffer, 1952). The sister obelisk set up in Central Park, New York City, has fared less favorably because similar treatment was done too late, only after the salts hydrated and hundreds of kilograms of scalings disfigured the obelisk surface (Winkler, 1980). Surface coating of other common stones may be needed. Crystalline marble absorbs moisture from high RH atmospheres: dilation may ensue when curtain panels bow as the moisture starts to expand during daily heating-cooling cycles. A good sealer may prevent the moisture influx provided that no moisture can enter from the inside of the building. Limestones, dolomites and all carbonate rocks are subject to dissolution attack by rainwater, especially in areas where acid rain prevails (Fig. 2). The interaction of sulfates in the atmosphere with the stone can be halted by waterproofing to avoid the formation of soft and more soluble gypsum. The stone surface attack can be diminished if nearly insoluble Ca-sulfite crusts can form, instead of Ca-sulfate. Replacement of fluorite or barium compounds at the stone surface acts as a hardener, rather than a sealant. Sandstones have generally high porosity and rapid water travel can occur along unexpected routes and from any direction. Any surface sealing may do more damage by scaling and bursting than if the stone is left without treatment. Sealing of sandstones is therefore not advised at any time. Testing the efficiency of sealants: Several authors discuss waterproofing materials, silicones, urethanes, acrylates and stearates, as to their water absorption, spreading rates of water on the treated surface, water vapor transmission, resistance to efflorescence, and general appearance (Clark et al., 1975). De Castro (1983) measured the angle of contact of a microdrop (0.004 cm3) on a stone surface as characteristic of the wettability. In late 2007 Neptune Minerals Plc. commissioned Genesis - a leading consultancy and engineering company affiliated to the Technip group - to undertake a Seafloor Mining Conceptual Study for mining of Seafloor Massive Sulphides (?SMS?) in Neptune?s New Zealand licenses. A key deliverable of the study was information to de-risk the perception of SMS mining for investors the minerals, and that deep-sea mining of SMS material is technically feasible, commercially viable and can safely be managed as a sustainable marine resource industry. The aim of the study, completed in April 2008, was to evaluate alternative existing marine technologies for seafloor mining, ore lifting, dewatering and surface offtake, considering the following parameters: ? This paper discusses the design of long panels for longwall mining at Twentymile Coal Company (TCC) from conception to implementation. The case study of the long panels at Twentymile includes extensive mine plan reengineering in the early 1990's to world record production months in 1996 and 1997. The obstacles of subsidence engineering, environmental regulations, conveyance, ventilation, equipment design, and continuous miner (CM) development timing had to be overcome to successfully begin longwall production within a 4 year time frame. The background and some detail for each of these areas listed will be discussed to show how the coordination of many facets must be pulled together to implement a successful long panel mine plan.

Steel-fiber-reinforced-shotcrete (SFRS) methods of testing and the wording of specifications vary from country to country. In the USA ASTM C1018 is widely used. The Canadians have taken a close look at C1018 and point out that exact determination of the first crack is very subjective, and they propose a method of design that eliminates this variable. The Europeans (EFNARC) have taken the principles of testing a step further than ASTM C1018, and have added a new step in measuring the effectiveness of SFRS. EFNARC uses an "energy absorption" of a plate loaded in its center, in addition to the principles of C1018. The principles of SFRS design are also used in Japan, Norway and elsewhere.

Innovative geotechnical construction techniques were used to construct three pedestrian tunnels under a building slab-on-grade to allow utilization of basement space for manufacturing. Tunnels were constructed using mining techniques through granular fill soils less than three feet below on-going sensitive manufacturing operations. Project design consisted of jet grout underpinning of exterior foundation walls and an arch of drilled-in grouted horizontal dowels for soil pre-support to limit ground movements during excavation. Permanent tunnel lining consisted of arched steel rib sets and invert struts supported on precast footings encased in cast-in-place concrete slab and side walls and a gunite arch.

Improvements in today's maintenance practices are mandatory as more complex and productive machines evolve in the mining industry. By keeping machine reliability high, through improved maintenance procedures, overall mining costs can be reduced. The Bureau of Mines is investigating diagnostic maintenance systems for underground mining machinery. A hydraulic expert diagnostic system and an electric motor predictive diagnostic system have been designed and installed on a Joy 16CM continuous miner. An electrical diagnostic system has been designed and installed on a Joy 14CM continuous miner. Each system is functionally described and the relative merits of expert diagnostic systems versus algorithmic diagnostic systems are discussed.

A small underground mine in northern Idaho was used as an experimental facility for studying the role of water in the analysis of mine opening stability. Laboratory test data, borehole measurements and geological mapping assisted in constructing a coupled finite element model of the rock mass. The model was used to make quantitative estimates of: 1) rock stress, strain and displacement changes, and 2) water pressure and flow velocity changes that occurred during historical mining. Stope cuts and wet fills were included in the analysis. Stability of crown pillars between stopes was of particular interest. The relatively low effective stress and high rock mass strength showed that water pressure changes were of no great consequence in agreement with experience. The computational tools used in the analysis may be applied to other wet mines with appropriate changes to site-specific input data.

The principle of microwave drying of fine coal is based on the selective absorption of microwaves by water. Coal is a poor absorber of microwaves. As a result, water can be removed from fine coal by selectively heating water molecules. One of the difficult problems during microwave heating is the exact determination of temperature in the core of the materials. The electromagnetic energy absorption in coal/water mixtures during microwave drying is controlled by several factors including the dielectric properties of the constituents. In this paper, electromagnetic and thermal models of coal are presented that can predict the energy absorption and temperature distribution during microwave drying.

The Paso Diablo coal project is located in the Guasare Basin in the northwestern region of Venezuela near the border with Colombia. In 1987, Carbones del Guasare SA, a joint venture comprised of Carbozulia and A.A. Antilles Coal (an Arco and AgipCoal joint venture) was formed to develop the Paso Diablo coal reserves for world markets. Regional drilling has indicated a coal resource of more than 6 Gt (6.6 billion st). Further exploration has delineated the Paso Diablo deposit as an area particularly suited for cost-effective surface mining. The calculated economically minable reserves of this area (200 Mt or 220 million st) and the coal quality characteristics are based on extensive core drilling programs. Initial coal mining operations began in August of 1987 and the mine is presently producing at a rate of 1.5 Mt/a (1.65 million stpy). The coal is hauled about 85 km (53 miles) to a barge loading terminal at Santa Cruz de Mara using highway-type haul trucks. A common assumption in determining the shear strength of a rock joint using a direct shear test is that the surfaces undergoing relative shear are in complete contact. Furthermore, the limiting displacement associated with the residual strength values is obtained based on engineering judgement through visual inspection of shear force versus displacement curves. This study proposes a systematic way of determining the residual shear strength of rock joints by evaluating the limiting displacement leading to a minimum cohesive strength value and taking the true area of contact into account. The results of the study indicate that there is a limiting displacement associated with the residual shear strength, and some rocks may have an inherent interface residual cohesive strength different from zero. When the cohesion is different from zero, the residual shear strength is likely to be underestimated if the true area of contact is not considered. In the case where zero calculated cohesion is obtained, the area of contact has no bearing on the shear strength equation because the frictional force depends only on the normal load.

To address the problem of grade estimation in a general three-dimensional shape and the uncertainty associated with the estimate, the technique of jackknifing/block kriging short-cut is proposed. A new estimator called jackknife kriging is introduced first. Through the jackknife variance, a confidence limit for the reserve grade estimate can be calculated. Unlike the kriging variance, which is more a measure of data configuration and is independent of data values, the jackknife variance reflects the true variability of the data. This approach provides a simple way to set a confidence level for global estimation of resources.

Coconut shells are the most widely used raw material for the production of activated carbon used in the gold production by cynanide leaching. There have been efforts to find alternatives to coconut shells. Shells and stones of certain fruits, have been tested. Although promising results to some extent were obtained, coconut shells remain the main source of activated carbon. Türkiye has become a country of interest in terms of gold deposits of epithermal origin. Four deposits have already been discovered and, mining and milling operations are expected to start in the near future. Explorations are underway in many other areas of high expectations. Türkiye is also rich in fruits which can be a valuable source of raw material for activated carbon production. In this study, hazelnut shells, peach and apricot stones, abundantly available locally, have been tested to determine whether they are suitable for the gold metalurgy. Parameters of carbonization and activation have been optimized. Gold loading capacity and adsorption kinetics have been studied.

Miners really are an optimistic bunch. Even with the dark clouds hanging over the global industry, mining professionals still turn out in droves at industry conferences. In February, more than 7,200 professionals attended SME?s Annual Meeting in Denver, CO, a record. And the following week, more than 30,000 people converged on Toronto, ON, Canada for the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) meeting. For many small and junior mining and exploration companies the PDAC conference is a place to find potential investors in their projects. The Investors Exchange attracts several hundred companies, each showing off their properties to the many money types who wander the hall during the four-day conference.

INTRODUCTION The extension project of the East Line Subway of Atlanta's subway network includes the construction of two single track transit tunnels under Interstate Highway 285. The project will be in DeKalb County, Georgia. The length, width, and height of each tunnel are 54.25, 6.3, and 7.2 m (178, 21, and 23 ft) respectively. The ground cover above the tunnel crown ranges from 1.5 to 3.25 m (5 to 11 ft). A soil pillar about 5.5 m (18 ft) wide will remain between the tunnels. The construction of each tunnel includes (i) installation of 21 steel soil support pipes of 75 cm (30 in) diameter, (ii) jet grouting 15 soil cement shafts of 60 cm (24 in) diameter in the soil under the pipes, (iii) contact grouting behind the tunnel lining and between soil support pipes and pavement, (iv) excavation of soil inside the soil support arch, and (v) installation of steel pile foundation, steel sets, and permanent tunnel lining of cast-in-place concrete, all as shown on the cross section in Fig. 1. The soil profile can be described from top to bottom as cement/asphalt concrete pavement, a fill layer consisting mostly of stiff sandy silt/firm silty sand, a residual soil layer consisting mostly of silty sand/sandy silt, partially weathered rock, and solid rock.

"This paper deals with an innovative mechanized method to bore and simultaneously line circular shafts, adopted in the Naples Metro project for the installation of 10 vertical shafts for ventilation purposes. With this method, excavation of shafts is carried out under a positive head of stabilizing fluid by a milling machine, temporarily set at the bottom of a permanent lining made of precast reinforced concrete segment rings. The debris is evacuated by inverse fluid circulation. The shafts in Naples are 4.5 m I.D., from 34 to 44 m deep and they are all located downtown in a highly urbanized area. They were bored and installed into volcanic soils under a hydrostatic head of up to 30 m. Displacements and groundwater level were constantly monitored to keep control of the effects on the surrounding buildings and utilities. INTRODUCTIONThe extension of Metro Line 1 in Naples (Italy) from the previous terminal of Piazza Dante to Piazza Garibaldi is also called the “low stretch”. Most of it runs along the coastline, encompassing the historical city center, the Greek-Roman Neapolis. The Metro Line crosses under densely urbanized areas for the whole way (Figure 1). It runs beneath Via Toledo, which follows the layout of the ancient Aragonese walls. The first station (Toledo) is located halfway along this street. Then, after a wide bend, the line reaches Piazza Municipio, where the second station is located. From there, the line moves along the axis of Via Depretis and Corso Umberto I, where the stations Università and Duomo are situated. The fifth station is in Piazza Garibaldi and the end of the stretch is located at the Naples Business Center. The twin single track tunnels were bored into volcanic tuff by TBM. This design choice simplified by far the construction of the tunnels and reduced to practically zero the interactions between tunnelling and surface buildings and utilities. Nevertheless, this choice entailed that the line had to be located at depths to the order of 35-45m below ground level and 30-35m below the water table. At each tunnel segment between stations, a pair of ventilation chambers were constructed (10 in total). Each ventilation chamber is connected to one TBM tunnel by a vertical shaft and a horizontal drift at the base of the shaft. The shafts, in addition to tunnel ventilation, provide a safety access/escape."

The examination of relatively well behaved distributions subject to truncation by a cutoff grade in the mine clearly demonstrates that a bias is inevitably introduced when the selection is based on the results of samples which are subject to even the most idealised error distribution. The idealised error used in this paper is assumed to be normally distributed with a mean of zero and is thus unbiased. The bias introduced can be minimised but it cannot be eradicated. A better understanding of the bias can lead to improved procedures for mine sampling, sample preparation, assaying and estimation of selection units which will not only reduce the discrepancy but more significantly will increase the efficiency of mining selection and hence profitability.

During in situ uranium mining using ammonium bicarbonate lixiviant, the ammonium exchanges with cations on the ore's clay. Mter mining is complete, the ammonium may desorb into post-leach ground water. For the particular ore studied, other chemicals (i.e., uranium and selenium) which are mobilized during the leach process, have also been found in the post-leach ground water. Laboratory column tests, used to simulate the leaching process, have shown that aluminum chloride can rapidly remove ammonium from the ore and thus greatly reduce the subsequent ammonium leakage level into ground water. The aluminum chloride has also been found to reduce the leakage levels of uranium and selenium. In addition, the aluminum chloride treatment produces a rapid improvement in permeability.

Although calcium sulfate dihydrate, commonly referred to as gypsum, has been utilized for some time in fiberglass reinforced polyester (FRP) applications, it does not have the fire retardant filler recognition of ATH. Gypsum is more commonly known for application in cement, soil and water treatment, plaster, and wall-board. Inherent characteristics of gypsum limit its use to low temperature and, until recently, non-aqueous applications. However, as a plentiful, naturally occurring hydrated mineral, the cost effectiveness of calcium sulfate dihydrate has prompted development and yielded success in the areas of FRP spray-up and latex carpet backing.

Controlling dust generation and keeping it below permissible limits to meet federal dust standards at the working face of a room-and-pillar coal mine is a challenge for a mine operator. With the recent changes in federal dust regulations requiring lower worker exposure, maintaining compliance has become increasingly difficult. The current most effective practice of dust control at a continuous miner face in an underground mine is the use of a flooded-bed scrubber. A study carried out by the U.S National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) indicated that a flooded-bed scrubber could achieve cleaning efficiencies between 58 and 90 percent. But the operation of such a system is maintenance intensive. The flooded-bed scrubber screen becomes clogged with dust particles and requires frequent cleaning to maintain performance. However, the dust control issue is not solely a mining-industry problem. Other industries face similar issues. The University of Kentucky collaborated with Toyota Motor Manufacturing on the development of a novel wet scrubber, called the vortecone scrubber, for capturing over-sprayed paint particles in automotive paint booths. The vortecone scrubber achieved a cleaning efficiency of 99 percent and required minimal maintenance. This study aims to assess the ability of this vortecone scrubber to capture respirable dust in an underground coal mine. The paper presents the results of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling of this vortecone scrubber. It discusses the effects of air quantity and dust particle size on the performance of the scrubber.

An availability approach for determining the capacity of a major Bucket Wheel Excavator (BWE) system to be used in the Yuabaoshan Surface Coal Mine in China is presented in this paper. Based on previous studies on other BWE systems for delay times due to internal and external causes and a four-level maintenance and repair schedule, a model was developed, taking into account all random failures, to present a fast and simple solution to this highly complex problem. A procedure employing the Markov renewal theory for determination of the distribution of random failure times and failure rate of the whole system, as well as some other factors useful for calculation of the overall system capacity, are discussed.
