The paper presents the evaluation method of the thermal power potential of the salt lakes developed in collapsed salt mines in Romania. It is well-known that the hydro-chemical stratification of these lakes favors warmer internal layers. The degree of heat varies during the year, but, taking into account the large number of genetic lakes of this type, it can be used as a local utilizable power source. The authors analyze the correlations between the physico-chemical parameters of the water and the degree of heat stored as a function of the morphological parameters of the lakes, as well as the technical parameters for capitalizing on this power.

One advantage of kriging is that it provides both an estimate of the block or point grade, and an indication of the local precision via the kriging variance. If one assumes that the estimation errors are normally distributed, then confidence intervals for the grades can be calculated. But in mining, grades are rarely normally distributed; in general, they are skew. This is particularly true for precious metals. In this paper we study confidence intervals for variables with non-normal distributions. Using a non linear geostatistical technique, the grades are transformed into their normally distributed equivalents. Confidence intervals are obtained for these normal variables, and back transformed to give the corresponding confidence intervals for the grades, for either points or blocks. This approach is applied to gold data from the Witwatersrand basin in South Africa.

The Drummond Co. Inc.'s Shoal Creek Coal Mine Slope Belt Conveyor transports 5000 mtph (5500 tph) of material over a length of 1400 m (4600 ft.) and a lift of 3609 m (1180 ft.). Four 1500 kW (2000 hp) motors power the 1830 mm (72 in.) Goodyear Flexsteel 5800 steel cable belt. In May 1993, Dodge Manufacturing was selected to design and build the conveyor pulley assemblies for this conveyor. The conveyor includes five pulley assemblies. The 2135 mm (84 in.) diameter by 2135 mm (84 in.) face primary and secondary drive pulleys were designed for a resultant belt load of 3060 kN (688,000 Ib.) This paper describes the design and manufacture of the two drive pulley assemblies. Design details included are component evaluation, material selection, locking assembly selection, bearing selection and lagging selection. Manufacturing details include material procurement, welding process, lagging installation and component assembly. Quality control procedures are also discussed.

Reduction in the quality of resources and attendant increase in the quantities of fines to be processed present a major economic and environmental challenge for resource - based industries. It is becoming evident that agglomeration by immiscible liquid wetting will play a significant role in the treatment of these fines. Liquid phase agglomeration can be adapted to separate solids or liquids in highly divided form from liquid suspensions and emulsions. Diverse opportunities in coal fines recovery, novel fuels technologies and oily waste water treatment are cited here. The oil agglomeration of extreme fines from coal tailings, with consequent dramatic reduction in refuse for disposal, is now a commercial reality. It is suggested that this approach can serve as a prototype for the processing of extreme fines in an economical and environment ally sound manner.

To model the zinc pressure leach, equations have been written that describe the rates of individual reactions taking place, including (a) oxygen mass transfer, (b) ferrous oxidation by dissolved oxygen, and (c) ferric reactions with ZnS and other minerals. In the continuous process, at steady-state, these take place at the same rate, and so the equations can be solved simultaneously. Model calculations using simultaneous equations are shown in graphical form to demonstrate the effect of different variables on the leach performance.

Deep tillage is widely used as a means of alleviating excessive soil compaction. There has been some concern that the voids created by deep tillage may collapse before a more natural soil structure develops, resulting in recompaction subsequent to deep tillage A laboratory investigation was conducted to determine the feasibility of pneumatically injecting organic material into the voids produced during deep tillage in order to prevent any significant recompaction from occurring. Various amendments were injected into the soil during laboratory tests using a small-scale ripping and injection system. Measurements were made of selected soil proper Pies to evaluate the feasibility of this method.

First mining operations in the Tyrone District, located just north of the Burro Mountains in Grant County, New Mexico, commenced in the 1870's. A major operation was undertaken by Phelps Dodge Corporation in the early 1900's when a 2,000 ton per day underground mine was developed and a gravity concentrator was built east of the mine and across the Continental Divide. It was during this time that the picturesque Tyrone townsite was built and occupied. In 1921, however, the underground operation was closed because of high operating costs and low demand for copper. The area was drilled extensively during the 1950's and in October 1966 Phelps Dodge announced the pending development of the new Tyrone with a large open-pit mine, a modern concentrator, suitable support facilities, and a new townsite to be located between the mine and Silver City. Stripping for the pit and construction of shop and milling facilities began in 1967. By the spring of 1969, ore was being stockpiled near the primary crusher. Operation of the concentrator on a 3-shift per day basis commenced on July 17, 1969. The concentrator as initially built had one primary, two secondary, and five tertiary cone crushers, two grinding sections of six ball mills each, two flotation sections, four filters, and four tailing thickeners. 'he capacity was about 30,000 tons per day. In 1971 and 1972, the capacity was increased to 48,000 tons per day by the addition of one secondary and two tertiary crushers, one section of eight ball mills, one flotation section, two filters, and four more tailing thickeners. A team of noise specialists from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), and Joy Manufacturing attempted to evaluate an engineering noise control on a Joy longwall stageloader. The team developed and executed a test plan to evaluate the noise attenuation of the engineering control in an underground coal-mining environment. An evaluation of the long-term noise effects and durability of the engineering control were also a focus of the research effort. Pre- and postcontrol measurements consisting of a combination of worker dosimetry and task observations, tape recordings, and sound level measurements were used to evaluate the engineering control. A description of the engineering noise control, pre- and post-control sound level measurements, and an evaluation of control success is presented. In the end, no evaluation was possible due to mining practices, miner task variations, and inconclusive data.

The prediction of underground methane emission from longwall coal faces has been extensively researched for a number of years and numerous prediction methods have been devised. Many coal mines employ sophisticated environmental monitoring equipment which generates large amounts of data including, methane concentration, air velocity and barometric pressure. Presently this information is mainly used only to indicate alarm and danger levels of the monitored data for management purposes, however, the potential uses of this data are enormous[1]. This information could be used to good effect within a production/methane emission strategy as detailed in a previous paper[2]. The paper presents a practical application of artificial neural networks to underground methane prediction. Data on methane concentration and coal production has been obtained from an underground coal mine. The data is used in a neural network architecture and forecasts of methane concentration have been obtained. The forecasts are examined and there is a discussion of the potential use of the predictions from neural networks in the field of mining production control.

The Geomechanics Classijication (RMR System) (Bieniawski, 1979) was modified for entry and roof support design in underground coal mines. Adjustment multipliers were introduced to incorporate the influence of high horizontal stresses and the roof support reinforcement into the existing classification system. Sixty- two case histories of standing and fallen mine roof were collected from two mines in the northern Appalachian coalfield. Twenty-seven engineering and geologic parameters were recorded for each case. A partial correlation analysis was carried out on the cases to establish which parameters have a significant im- pact on the stand-up time of supported coal mine roof. Survival analysis, a statistical technique used in medical research to assess the effect of a drug or treatment on a patient's life expectancy, was conducted together with stepwise multiple regression to derive values for the adjustment multipliers. A practical example is included to illustrate the application of the modified Geomechanics Classification to underground coal mine design.

Currently there is considerable interest in applying in situ leaching technology to recover copper from oxide ores. In many instances, the distribution of copper mineralization in these deposits is fracture controlled. Laboratory core-leaching experiments have demonstrated that leaching response is sensitive to the dissolution of copper from and the formation of channels along main fractures. Solution short- circuiting can be a major limitation of this technology. This paper describes the application of macromolecular polymers to achieve flow-profile control during leaching. Pre- and post-leached fractures were characterized by computerized tomography (CT) analysis.

Froth flotation is one of the most actively pursued research and development areas in the coal preparation industry today. Many new types of flotation machines and processes are being developed and compared in an effort to handle the increased quantity of coal fines produced by finer grinding for greater liberation of ash- forming and sulfur-bearing mineral matter. Of the many new machines and processes under development for deep cleaning ultrafine coals, it is quite likely that many will not reach industrial use in the near future; in fact, it is quite likely that some never will. Therefore, it is the objective of this paper to select and describe a few of the new flotation machines and processes that appear to have reached a level of development that would suggest their eventual use on an industrial scale. It is probable, and doubtless will be argued, that some of the selections given in this paper should not have been included, while others should have, but the reader must understand that the author is restricted by the information available. And because most of the information available comes from those who are developing the equipment and/ or processes, it is often confusing and conflicting. Thus with a somewhat moderated plan, the author proposes to point out some in- congruities in the literature in the hope that such information might promote more independent study and perhaps explain the abundant promise versus the scant use of the new equipment and processes described.

The Mojave Desert province is comprised of a diverse group of mountains that range in elevation from about 2,000' (600 m) to 3,000' (900 m), separated by tracts of alluvial cover. The province is bounded on the southwest by the San Andreas fault, on the north by the Garlock fault, on the east by the Death Valley- Granite Mountains fault. Rocks preserved in the Mojave Desert Province collectively record a rich assemblage of Precambrian crystalline basement' ranging in age from ca. 1.8 to 1.35 Ga, upper Precambrian and Paleozoic Cordilleran miogeoclinal sediments and platform rocks, Mesozoic backarc and interarc shallow marine and continental sequences, locally emplaced Permian- Triassic syenitic plutons, extruded hypabyssal volcanic rocks of the ?Jurassic "Sidewinder Volcanic Series," and regionally intruded late Mesozoic granitoid batholithic rocks (Dokka et al., 1988). The Mojave block apparently was a high-standing element for much of the early Tertiary, with strata of Late Cretaceous or early Tertiary age preserved only on its margins. Beginning about in the late Oligocene an intense episode of regional north-south extension was developed in a roughly east- west trending belt that traversed the central part of the province. This extensional belt has been termed the Mojave Extensional Belt. The extensional regime lasted from about 22-17 Ma, and is generally divided into two phases. The first, from about 22-20 Ma records intense extension via the activity of crustal-scale, simple shear, low- angle normal faults, high-angle normal faults, and extensional fracturing, along with intrusion of intermediate to silicic volcanic rocks, including episodes of explosive volcanic activity. The Peach Springs Tuff, a major regional marker unit that extends across the Mojave from Arizona to about Barstow, forms an effective stratigraphic lid on the extensional interval, (i.e., is not rotated) and is dated isotopically at about 18.5 Ma. The extensional episode was followed by an interval of high- angle normal faulting and dike emplacement from about 19 to 17 Ma, and was accompanied by at least local uplift and volcanism. Most volcaniclastic and epiclastic sedimentary units of the central Mojave block post-date the interval of extension and normal faulting, and occur as a complex of marginal alluvial and more interior lacustrine facies that formed as recently as late Miocene (ca 13 Ma). Local sequences (e.g., Lava Mountains) record deposition up to about 8 Ma, but there appears to be a regional "gap" from then until at least local successions record Pleistocene deposition. Magnetic and isotopic age studies indicate a complex history of crustal rotations, distributed across a number of discrete domains, during the past 10 Ma. Some of the youngest volcanic and geomorphic features apparently developed at "holes" formed at the edges of rotated blocks.

Maintenance and inventory are usually the last items considered in mine development. They need to be addressed properly and early. The micro-computer brings sophistication within the reach of even the smallest mines. Maintenance and inventory programs, if properly installed, will reduce costs 15 to 25% and allow management time to address the mining and metallurgical problems at start up. Shops and warehouses are rarely designed properly. Large engineering firms spend 5 to 20 times more than is necessary for first class facilities. There is an optimum design, size, and layout. Take the time necessary to assure you get the right people, programs, and facilities in that order. Maintenance, inventory, and inventory control must be addressed early if a small mine is to have a chance at optimizing costs during the first two years of operation. This is hard work and is usually put on the back burner until the mine is in some degree of trouble. Hiring an experienced maintenance superintendent is important but it is not the complete solution. Maintenance systems, design of facilities, and use of computers are not skills that maintenance people usually have. In addition, the work of ordering spare parts and working with erection people is a full time job and any maintenance people on site during construction are quickly recruited. The end result is that few mines start up with an adequate Maintenance or Inventory System in place. The months, and in some cases years, that the mine attempts to operate without a system are both painful and expensive. Designs of successful integrated maintenance and inventory programs are virtually 100% supported with some outside assistance. Our system is the approach that we are most familiar with and this paper will isolate how Rushton International would go about setting up systems and designing support facilities. Micro-computers are the only way for a small mine to go. ~ini-computers cost more originally and operating costs are many times higher than even the most sophisticated micro system. Micro- computer software is developed further and recent advances in hardware makes medium priced units equal to most mini's in RAW COMPUTER POWER. Mines in general, and especially small mines, have no need for main frame power. MAINTENANCE A good maintenance program has: 1. Equipment Master List a. Equipment Detail Reports 2. Overseas coal trade has increased from 169 to 274 million metric tons (tonnes) between 1970 and 1983, representing a 3.8% average annual rate of growth. Metallurgical coal accounts for nearly 61% of the international coal market while steam coal's share is about 40%. By year-end 1983, the U.S. was the single largest coal exporter at 77 million tonnes, followed by Australia, 56 million tonnes; Poland, 35 million tonnes; South Africa, 28 million tonnes; USSR, 27 million tonnes; and Canada, 17 million tonnes. Coal exports can play a more significant role for one country than another country. For instance, in the U.S., coal exports accounted for only 9% of total coal demand in 1984 while in Australia, exports accounted for 53% of that country's total coal demand. Of all the major coal exporters, only U.S. exports accounted for less than 10% of total consumption in 1984. Japan is the largest importer of coal, 73.8 million tons in 1983. Although the majority of Japan's imports are metallurgical coal, steam coal imports into Japan increased seven-fold between 1978 and 1983, from 2 to 14 million tonnes. Australia is the leading exporter of both metallurgical and steam coal to Japan, accounting for 47% and 55% of Japan's coal imports, respectively. Since 1978, South Africa has developed into a major steam coal exporter to Japan, increasing its market share from 7.9% to 18.8%. The U.S., which was not even a player in Japan's steam coal market in 1978, has made inroads and accounts for 6.7% of Japan's steam coal imports. However, this translates into only one million tonnes. In the European coal market, for the most part, the U.S. is the leading supplier of metallurgical coal and South Africa is the major supplier of steam coal. The U.S. was not even a factor in the European steam coal market in 1978 and has made inroads during the last six years at the expense of Poland and South Africa. From 1978 to 1983, the U.S. has increased its market share in steam coal exports to France from 0.2 to 28%; Spain, 0 to 52%; Italy, 0 to 43.5%; Denmark, 0 to 19%; Germany, 0.5 to 16%; and the Netherlands, 0.6 to 45%, respectively. The use of coal (solid fuels) as a fuel to produce electricity has had increasing signficance for most of the countries analyzed between 1978 and 1983. The flip side to this is that oil has lost its share of this market during this time period. Of all the countries selected, only France reported a decline in coal's share of total electricity production. This is a reflection of France's ambitious nuclear program.

Previously we reported crushing or grinding crystalline silica results in silica-based free radicals on the particulate surface which can generate hydroxyl radicals in aqueous solution (1). Now we find that freshly ground silica is more cytotoxic to and a more potent activator of alveolar macrophages than similarly sized aged silica. Since the United States Department of Labor estimates that over 1.25 million American workers may be exposed to freshly ground crystalline silica arid nearly 60,000 may be at risk of developing some degree of silica-based occupational lung disease, then this is hardly a trivial problem. Occupations of concern include workers who come in contact with silica including miners of soft and hard minerals, stone quarry workers, glass workers and even millers who stone grind flour. Acute silicosis is manifested by inflammation, alveolar lipo-proteinosis, and the rapid development of respiratory disability that depending on the dose of silica can produce chronic silicosis which takes 20 - 40 years to develop. It is demonstrated by the appearance of concentric hyalinized nodular lesions and progressive development of dyspnea(3). Certainly the free radicals produced on the surface of freshly ground crystalline silica play a most important role in producing the acute and chronic symptoms of silicosis. When respirable-size freshly- ground silica (0.1 -- 5 microns in diameter) enters the deep alveolar spaces in the lung and contacts an aqueous environment, hydroxyl radical are generated and cellular damage is bound to occur. We have found that freshly ground silica can cause lipid peroxidation and lysis of erythrocytes(1). The objective of this investigation was to further elucidate the enhanced toxicity of freshly ground versus aged silica. It can be deduced from the data that not only is freshly ground silica more cytotoxic to alveolar macrophages but it is a more potent stimulant of these phagocytes. However the mere characterization of toxicity is not entirely helpful if there is not a useful means to detoxify the cause of the damage. We have identified an aqueously soluble substance that can be used in high dilution to detoxify the SiO(•) and Si(•) type of free radicals. This is the organosilane known as Prosil 28 (R). We have found that coating of the freshly ground silica can effectively reduce its toxicity. The importance of this observation is that such a coating could be used with water cooled drills. This may partially detoxify silica at the point of generation of the free radical, i.e., the generation of the fresh silica dust itself. Such a coating could be used in great dilution 1:103 or 1:104. The coating would be long lasting, inexpensive and should be non-toxic because of the great dilution.

Discrete element is a numerical technique for describing the collision dynamics and motion of an assembly of particles. In particular, calculations are done on full three-dimensional space with a force-contact law for collisions and Newton’s law for subsequent motion. It may be said that there is no empiricism in this approach. The paper describes the full scale simulation of large diameter semiautogenous grinding mill of size 40X24 ft. It is shown that the simulation predicts the power draft of plant size mill extremely accurately. Also these simulations have been adapted uniquely to assess the motion of pebbles and slurry in pulp lifters. The passage of slurry from pulp lifters into trunnion is extremely important since flow-back and carryover must be avoided at all cost. The dynamics of slurry flow through pulp lifters is also described in this paper.

The Brunswick No. 12 Deposit is a large polymetallic massive sulphide deposit, occurring in Ordovician age rocks of the Tetagouche Group. Silver is contained within the sulphide zones and economically it is the second most important commodity produced. Brunswick is one of the largest silver producers in Canada. The distribution of silver within the mine is presented, with examples from various levels. The concentration of silver can be shown to be related to both stratigraphy and structure. The mineralogy of silver in mill products is also presented.

Suggestions have been made that the appraisal of mining assets using discounted cash flow techniques should be based solely on proven and probable reserves in reliance upon the widespread international recognition of uniform resource definitions. Following a review of generally accepted valuation principles, a survey of the literature and, most importantly, a review of real transactions in the open market, it is clear that valuators should not be constrained by the growing acceptance of modern mineral resource codes. On the contrary, valuation practitioners should be encouraged to examine all classes of mineralization and, after making due allowance for risk, to utilize all mineral resources as a basis for determining fair market value.

This paper presents details of an availability study for a fleet of diesel engine operated load-haul-dump (LHD) machines used in a Swedish mine. For the purpose of this study, the LHD machines have been considered as a system comprised of many subsystems like engine, brake, transmission, etc., in series. As availability is dependent on both the reliability and maintainability characteristics of the system, together with reliability, the concepts of maintainability are also discussed. The need for exploring the data for the presence of any structure, which is very common in repairable system data sets, is emphasized with suitable examples. Simple graphical techniques are used for verifying the independent and identically distributed (IID) assumption for the data set. The error introduced due to the use of the exponential distribution in place of more appropriate distributions in estimation of availability and reliability characteristics is analysed.
