Completion of a railroad to the high Tibetan Plateau in Central China has now made it economical to exploit its mineral reserves. Lead and zinc mines are now being established. A potash plant to produce 40,000 tons per year KC1 is now in operation. Plans to produce 200,000 tons per year by 1987 are being implemented. Pilot drilling for oil and natural gas have proved up reserves. Slaughter houses are being constructed to ship yak, mutton and beef from the endless grasslands on the plateau. Research Centers in Xining and Golmud have been completed for the sole purpose of increasing technology and exploitation of the Tsaidam Basin and surrounding area.

The schlieren technique describes an optical analysis method designed to enhance light distortions caused by air movement. The ability to visualize air flow has significant implications for analyzing underground mine ventilation systems, including the enhancement of surveys and models. Currently, traditional schlieren methods are impractical underground. Background-oriented schlieren (BOS) provides a solution to this problem. BOS requires two primary components, a professional quality digital camera and a schlieren background. A schlieren background is composed of a varying contrast repetitive pattern, such as black and white stripes. This background allows the camera’s sensor to capture minor light diffractions, such as those caused by air flow. Although BOS shows great potential for ventilation analysis, sensitivity is an issue. This paper seeks to validate the BOS technique for imaging flow through a regulator by comparing BOS images with traditional schlieren images. This paper also outlines initial experimental efforts used for the validation.

In mid-1972 we determined that a fresh approach to coal mining research was needed for the industry as well as for Bethlehem. The reasons to us were obvious: Productivity was in the throes of a steady decline, and labor and maintenance costs were spiraling upward. Yet, despite this predicament, nowhere in the U.S. at that time was there a comprehensive and coordinated research and development plan in the offing. The Bureau of Mines had not yet been charged with such a responsibility, and industry was content to rely on machinery manufacturers for innovations. After studying our own mining practices, the state-of-the-art of mining research elsewhere, and development work by manufacturers, we presented a comprehensive research package to our management at the end of 1972. The ideas and experience of many operating and management personnel in our Corporation contributed to the formulation of the final plan as approved.

Porphyry type copper ± molybdenum deposits typically occur in the Phanerozoic rocks and have been well documented. During the past two decades a number of porphyry type Cu ± Mo deposits which range in age from 1055 ± 35 Ma to 2970 Ma have been identified in the Precambrian rocks of Australia, Canada, China, Finland, India, Namibia and Zambia. Kalanjkhand porphyry copper deposit M. P., India which is estimated to contain 789 million tonnes averaging 0. 83 percent Cu (millhead-grade); 0.004 percent Mo; 0.2 gm/t Au; 6 gm/t Ag and a cap of 7.532 million tonnes of oxide are averaging 0.8 percent Cu. The economic potential of the expanded copper mining milling, smelting and refining complex to be built in the future at Kalanjkhand, which is the largest porphyry copper deposit discovered to date in the Precambrian rocks of the world is presented.

The Geomechanics Classification (Bieniawski, 1979) was modified for entry and roof support design in underground room-and-pillar coal mines. Adjustment multipliers were introduced to incorporate the influence of strata weatherability, high horizontal stresses, and the roof support reinforcement factor into the existing classification system. Sixty-two case histories of both standing and fallen mine roof were collected from two mines in the northern Appalachian coalfield. Twenty-seven engineering and geologic parameters were recorded for each case. A partial correlation analysis was carried out on the cases to establish which parameters have a significant impact upon the supported stand-up time of coal mine roof. Survival analysis, a statistical technique used in medical research to assess the effect of a drug or treatment on a patient's life expectancy, was conducted together with stepwise multiple regression to derive values for the adjustment multipliers. A practical example is included to illustrate the application of the modified Geomechanics Classification to underground coal mine design.

The concept of "heat recuperation" for the grate-kiln pelletizing system was first implemented at the Sydvaranger plant in Norway in 1974. Essentially, heat recuperation involves bringing hot air from the second stage of the pellet cooler to the drying zone to increase drying-air temperature to the maximum limit. 'Burner-fuel savings result from a lower kiln secondary-air mass flow at a higher temperature. Because of the fuel benefits achieved at Sydvaranger, heat recuperation has been included innumerous new grate-kiln plants built since then, and some older plants have been retrofitted for heat recuperation. In recent years there has been much confusion about the fuel benefits of heat recuperation. To answer some of the questions, a mathematical model was developed and plant tests were conducted at Minntac Phase 111. Minntac is a magnetite taconite concentrating and pelletizing plant, and Phase III has two indurating lines. This paper presents the results of the studies and plant tests.

The Israel Mining Industries Institute for Research and Development has developed, during recent years, a number of new processes for fertilizer materials. Their phosphoric acid processes, however, are capable of producing an acid of far higher quality than that normally associated with fertilizer grade acid. This paper will discuss two of these processes showing the quality attainable and the capital and operating costs for, U. S. conditions. The Standard IMI Process is based on the acidulation of phosphate rock with hydrochloric acid and involves solvent extraction for the separation of high quality, phosphoric acid from the resulting solution. The IMI Purification Process applies the same solvent extraction technique to the purification of a wet process phosphoric acid from sulfuric acidulated rock. IMI has built and operated a semi-works scale demonstration plant for the standard process. The first commercial plant was started up in; Japan in 1962. This small seven metric ton per day plant is currently producing a furnace quality acid. A larger 50 metric ton per day plant is nearing completion in Brazil. Another 50 metric ton per day plant is under design while a large plant with a capacity in excess of 150 metric ton per day is in the planning stage. Both of the latter facilities are for Israel.

Synthetically produced magnesium hydroxide serves as the precursor for much of the magnesium oxide produced in the world today. Magnesium oxide, in a variety of physical and chemically reactive forms, is a very important commodity. It is used as the main component in refractories employed in steelmaking furnaces and in many base metal refining furnaces. In the chemical industry, it serves as a raw material in the production of epsom salts, rayon acetate, oxychloride and oxysulfate cements and magnesium sulfonates. It is a minor component in fertilizers and animal feeds. It serves as the starting material for producing fused magnesia, used as an electrical insulator in electric heating elements. It is employed in the magnesium sulfite process for pulp digestion in the paper industry. Additional uses are in SO2 scrubbers, as a neutralizing agent in the tanning industry and as a component in rubber compounding. Magnesium oxide is produced not only from synthetically produced magnesium hydroxide. It is produced from natural magnesites, natural brucites, and natural and synthetic hydro-magnesites. Synthetic magnesium hydroxide, as a starting material provides more control of the chemical purity and chemical reactivity of resulting magnesium oxide products because of the uniform nature, chemical and physical, of the hydroxide that can be produced. Synthetic magnesium hydroxide is produced by precipitation of Mg (OH)2 from magnesium chloride bearing seawater or natural brines through the use of a base such as Ca(OH)2 or NaOH.

The height of permanent slopes at the Panguna mine of Bougainville Copper Limited will vary from 350 to 950 metres. A few degrees difference in slope angle has a large effect on the ore/waste stripping ratio. Optimum slopes can be achieved if longer batter slopes (exceeding 45m height) are excavated using bulldozers to trim parallel to controlling fracture surfaces. Unnecessary slope flattening by incorporating benches can cost millions of dollars in lost ore. Faults and other major weaknesses, which can result in wedge failure or erodible zones have been treated successfully with shotcrete, rockbolts and cable dowels. To minimize support effort and interference with mine production, early identification and treatment of unstable areas is important.

The Little Rocky Mountains host epithermal gold-silver bearing vein and stockwork deposits in a syenite intrusive complex. Pegasus Gold Ltd. is currently mining the oxidized deposits by open-pit methods and recovering gold and silver by heap-leach processes. A geologic program has been designed to effectively determine the basic ore characteristics; 1)mineralization; 2)oxidation; 3)structural setting; 4)lithology; 5)alteration; and ultimately, 6)the leachability of the ore. Geologic mapping, sampling, drilling, assaying, and testing are routinely used in exploration, development, production control, mine planning, and ore reserve estimations. Timely and accurate assay results are essential for the program's success.

Two-thirds of the world copper produced in 1979 incurred cash costs between $0.35 and $0.89 per lb, averaging $0.62 per lb. North American costs are higher at $0.48, $0.88, and $0.68 per lb, respectively. Variable cash costs are $0.20, $0.58, and $0.39 per lb for the world; $0.29, $0.63, and $0.46 per lb for North America. Cash costs are relevant for comparing existing operations and evaluating market pricing during periods of excess supply. Analysis of full costs of production (cash costs plus income taxes, profit, and non-cash items) becomes relevant in evaluating the incentive price required to develop new production plants. In mid-1979 this cost (incentive price) was about $1.10 per lb; it is expected to approach $2.00 per lb by 1985.

It is well known that processing of the high-silicon bauxites for obtaining alumina by the hydrochemical Bayer process is irrational due to the significant losses of alumina and alkali with red mud. The main source of losses of the mentioned compounds under the conditions of leaching by the Bayer process is the formation of difficultly soluble sodium alumosilicate of the composition Na20 .Al203, 2Si02 . n H20. A conventional method of an extra recovery of alumina as well as of regeneration of alkali out of red mud is the high-temperature sintering of the latter with soda and limestone with the subsequent leaching of sodium aluminate from the sinter by water or soda solution. A sequential version of the Bayer-sintering flow chart recommended for the prosessing of bauxites with an increased content of silica is based on this method. However, the sintering method is not the only alkaline method allowing to make an extra recovery of alumina likewise of alkali from red mud. Our investigations showed/I/, that the components mentioned can be recovered by a pure hydrochemical method of treating red mud with concentrated alkaline solutions, with lime (Ca0) being present, that was earlier succesfully used in the development of the hydrochemical method of processing nepheline rocks/2/. The possibility of extracting alumina and alkali from red mud is based on the reactions which can be schematically represented in the following way:

Particle collection is considered to occur by particle collision with the bubble followed by the particle sliding over the bubble during which attachment may occur. Collision is quantified by a collision efficiency, EC. The existing model for EC is extended by including particle inertia. Attachment is quantified by an attachment efficiency, EA calculated as the fraction of particles which reside on the bubble for a time greater than the induction time. These calculations use recent data on the liquid velocity distribution over the upper half of rigid spheres. Collection efficiency, EK is given by EK = EC ? EA. Detachment is not considered. The mode is examined and shown to agree with much experimental data. For example the maximum observed in recovery vs particle size (d) can be explained as E increases with increasing d , while EA decreases. The decrease in selectivity at fine sizes is in accord with the model result that for dp < 5µm, EA ? 100% (i.e. EK ? EC) almost regardless of induction time. A decrease in bubble size does increase EK but does not improve selectivity. A high particle density (> 5g/cm3) is shown to cause a sharp peak in recovery vs size and a decreased maximum size of floatability. Finally, the possible effects of bubble and particle concentration are explored.

[A column float beneficiation plant using 9, 8.5 foot diameter, cells was constructed by the Simplot Company and the Smoky Canyon Facility in the fall of 1986 and has been in operation since May of 1987. The float beneficiation process was developed jointly by the Simplot Company and the Bureau of Mines (Salt Lake City, Utah) which incorporates the Bureau&apos;s bubble generator design and chemistry system based around the reverse float technology, (Albany Bureau of Mines, Application of Carbonate-Silica Flotation Techniques to Western Phosphate Materials, Rule, Dallenbach , Larsen, RI8728, 1982) . This chemistry has been modified by Simplot in both patented and unpatented improvements. The objective of the beneficiation process was to reducethe A1203 content in the overall pipeline concentrate by 0.2 wt z. Therefore, a process stream was identified in the mill circuit which provided an opportunity to isolate and treat 1100 tons per day of poor quality phosphate concentrates The process allows recovery of approximately 15% of the mill concentrates, otherwise unsuitable for fertilizer production. The alternative would have been to waste this ore. Wasting would have resulted in considerable ore loss, increased mining costs and required additional products grinding. ]

An upsurge of interest in slurry pipelines to move coal from Wyoming, Montana, and Colorado to markets in the southwest, west, midwest and northwest has recently developed. Specific pipelines have been proposed to serve these markets; the routes of these lines are depicted in Exhibit I. It is, therefore, timely to discuss some technical aspects of the terminal facilities for these western coal pipelines. The discussion will be based on experience with the Ohio and Black Mesa pipelines as well as detailed planning and testing for a proposed 1,000-mile system from Wyoming to the middle south area. The economics of the pipeline terminal processes are heavily depend¬ent on site, type of process used, and other specifics of the situation. However, the following approximate breakdown of costs for a 1,000 mile, large capacity pipeline will be useful for orientation purposes. "In longwall mines, atmospheric or barometric pressure fluctuations can disturb the pressure balance between the gob and the ventilated working area of the mine, resulting in a phenomenon known as “gob breathing”. Gob breathing triggers a gas flow across the gob and the working areas and may result in a condition where a methane accumulation in the gob flows into the face area forming an explosive mixtures. This paper discusses results of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling carried out to analyze this phenomenon and its impact on the explosive mixture development under a bleeder-ventilated longwall gob panel scheme. Modeling results indicate that the gas inflow and outflow across the gob and the formation of Explosive Gas Zones (EGZs) are directly affected by the barometric pressure changes. Methane gas and EGZs in the gob expand out toward the face and bleeder entries during the falling barometric pressure. Where methane zones interface with mine air, EGZ fringes may form along the face and in the bleeder entries. When the atmospheric pressure increases, an ingression of oxygen into the gob is observed that can also increase EGZs in volume. The findings from this study help assess the methane ignition and explosion risks associated with fluctuating atmospheric pressures. INTRODUCTION Methane explosions continue to be a daunting risk for underground coal miners, although the number of related fatalities and injuries in the U.S. coal mining industry has steadily decreased since the establishment of the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1910. Still, the consequences of a methane explosion are often disastrous with multiple fatalities and property damage often leading to permanent shutdown of the mine. Methane is formed during the coalification process and is released from the coal seam to the mine atmosphere when the coalbed is disturbed by mining or natural causes such as earthquakes. If not properly diluted by appropriate mine ventilation, this methane may accumulate in the active mine workings and gob areas. Researchers at the Colorado School of Mines have developed numerical models showing how and where explosive methane may accumulate in gob areas. Historical mine explosions appear to show a connection between mine explosions and fluctuating barometric pressure as a result of stormy weather. McIntosh (1957), Boyer (1964), and Kissell et al. (1973) studied the influence of barometric drops on major coal mine disasters in the United States prior to 1970. Their statistical analyses found that a majority of these disasters occurred in the fall and winter months when the barometric pressures were influenced by unstable weather conditions and noted increased methane content in the mine workings during times of falling pressure. Studies conducted by Fauconnier (1992) and Hemp (1994) found similar connections between methane explosions and barometric pressure fluctuations in a majority of gas explosions in South African mines. Ten out of twelve major mine explosions with five or more fatalities in the U.S. after 1970 were found to have occurred during the months of November through April when barometric pressure swings were more abrupt and intense (Lolon et al., 2015)."

In the last decade or so, the importance of effective preventive maintenance controls and practices has taken on a new and accelerated emphasis. Advances in technology and changes in equipment and product designs impose more precise and demanding standards of quality, productivity and customer service at a very rapid pace. Daily, it is becoming more apparent that in order to fulfill current requirements, existing manufacturing practices and associated control programs must also be upgraded and expanded. This is particularly true in the field of maintenance services. As production and quality standards become more demanding, effective equipment maintenance takes on more importance and becomes more difficult to sustain. In modern plants, the failure of a single equipment component can shutdown a complete production line causing interruptions to operating and shipping schedules that result in costly downtime, dissatisfied customers, and reduced profits. These costly experiences can be minimized with an effective maintenance program that provides maximum equipment reliability and minimum downtime and readily adapts to revision and change. ABSTRACT Lateritic bauxite deposits of economic size and grade in Sierra Leone occur on granulites of the Kasila series. The high grade trihydrate ores of Mokanji are exploited by SIEROMCO since 1964. Remaining reserves are small (2 million tons) and operation moved over to the Gondama deposits of similar grade. Port Loko bauxite reserves are estimated at 100 million tons and are of relatively lower grade. It is planned to treat this ore locally into alumina. Guinea&apos;s bauxite reserves exceed those of any other nation. They occur as hard lateritic bauxite covers on plateaus of the Pre-Cambrian sedimentary formations and on doleritic intrusions. The genesis is still controversial. The Sangaredi mine has produced high grade ore for the last 10 years. Friguia exploits a relatively lower grade ore at a rate of about 2 million tpy to be treated in their local alumina plant. Kindia ore is mined at a yearly rate of 2,5 million tons since 1974. Untouched reserves at Ayékoyé and Tougué/Dabola are estimated at 6,000 million tons.
