Pillars are used as the primary support structures for underground mining to maintain stability by supporting the over laying strata. In the case of horizontal seams, the pillars are typically subjected to axial loading due to the weight of the overburden and/or abutment stresses, while in the case of inclined seams they are subjected to oblique loading due to both the vertical and horizontal in-situ stress.

The contribution of the mining industry to the global economy has reached (and gone beyond) $1,800 billion in recent years that necessitates (more than before) the need to ensure workability, viability, health, and safety of mine sites and workers to meet the ever-increasing global demand for mineral resources. Amongst the many challenges facing the excavation industries, rockburst and spalling failures in deep mines in hard and brittle rock formations are yet happening that are still deemed as unsolved problems. During unconfined compressive testing of brittle rocks, microcracks initiate at approximately 0.3–0.5 of the peak strength (which is commonly known as the Crack Initiation stress level) mainly in the direction of the major principal stress, then grow unstably and coalesce to form macro fractures at approximately 0.7–0.8 of the peak load at a so-called Crack Damage stress threshold. From a stress-strain perspective, the crack damage stress threshold () is associated with the reversal point of the volumetric strain, which is also proved to be strongly affected by the intermediate principal stress. This paper extends the previous studies on the impact of true triaxial loading conditions on the CD stress level in high porosity rocks, and introduce a new Crack Mode-Changing Stress (CMCS) defined as the minimum principal stress required to change rock fracturing from splitting to a sliding failure mode. A large number of experiments on sandstone specimens were carried out at different true triaxial loading conditions and the effect of principal stresses on the CI and CD as well as CMCS were studied. The results show that not only the intermediate principal stress, but also the minor principal stress can significantly affect the CD and CMCS thresholds.

Geochemical exploration guidelines were developed from a study of 460 rock chip samples collected at nine disseminated gold deposits in Nevada. Obtaining high grade Au samples is difficult because gold content is extremely variable, even over 8 m (25 ft) distances. For reconnaissance sampling, pathfinder elements are reliable indicators with threshold values of 100 ppm As, 1 ppm Hg, and 50 ppm Sb. Arsenic is the most reliable of the three elements, being significantly enriched in all deposits. If the pathfinder threshold levels are reached with low Au content, more samples should be collected. Successful disseminated gold exploration requires large numbers of samples.

INTRODUCTION Geotechnical models, particularly those based on the finite element method, have been available to aid in en¬gineering design of underground mining excavations for over ten years. Despite this fact there are remarkably few cases of their use in mine design documented in the literature. It is therefore to be anticipated that many potential users of these models are relatively unaware of their capabilities and limitations and also of the form and detail of geotechnical data needed for their success¬ful application. This subsection attempts to address this problem by discussing the different types of numerical models now available and by noting how some of them have been used to study a variety of problems associated with underground mining. The subsection concludes by discussing the applica¬tion of the displacement discontinuity method to the de¬sign of possible mining systems for the copper-nickel deposits of northeastern Minnesota. The object of the analyses, which were nonsite specific, was to determine the significance of geotechnical parameters, such as ini¬tial stress and rock structure, on the stability of under¬ground excavations and hence to provide guidance for future geotechnical investigation. NUMERICAL MODELS In the geomechanical design of underground mining openings, use is made of numerical models that repre¬sent or simulate the large-scale mechanical behavior of rock. There has been less interest in analysis involving fluid flow and heat transfer, but with increasing interest in such areas as in-situ retorting and solution mining it is likely that there will be a growing need for numerical models embracing and coupling all three physical proc¬esses. However, the emphasis in this subsection will be on mechanical behavior. Models which simulate such behavior will be divided into two groups: continuum models and discontinuum models. These will be dis¬cussed in turn in order that some insight into alternative solution strategies and their merits may be gained. Continuum Models Almost all geomechanical numerical models must be classed as continuum models even though particular computer codes incorporate special provisions for rep¬resenting discontinuities such as faults, bedding planes, or joints. They are continuum models because they pro¬vide solutions for cases where material behavior is governed by the differential equations of continuum mechanics. Two basic solution strategies for such equa¬tions may be identified immediately: the differential ap¬proach and the integral approach. In the differential approach a means of approximating the differential equations over the entire region of interest is sought. In the integral approach use is made of fundamental solutions from continuum mechanics, and these are used to construct a solution to the whole problem, making approximations only on the boundaries of the region of interest. The several differential and integral methods are identified in Table 1. Differential Methods: Problems in continuum me¬chanics involve the solution of three types of partial differential equations. Two of these govern the behavior in so-called initial value problems, in which variables change both in time and in space. Examples of such problems include nonsteady heat transfer and fluid flow, and stress wave propagation. The last type of partial differential equation governs the behavior in boundary value problems. In these, variation is in space but not in time. Solution of initial value problems may be achieved in two significantly different methods: implicit and ex¬plicit. The differences between these two methods will be illustrated by considering a very simple initial value problem, that of one-dimensional heat diffusion. The equation governing this process may be written as: [ ] where T is temperature, K is thermal conductivity, p is density, c is specific heat, t is time, and x is the spacial coordinate. In finite difference form this equation might be written as: [ ] where the superscripts refer to the time and the sub¬scripts to the spacial location. Several solution strategies for this equation have been used. Two important ones may be illustrated very simply by discussing the signifi¬cance of the superscript * on the right-hand side of the equation. If i + 1 is substituted for * then the second derivative of the temperature with respect to distance is evaluated at the end of the next time step (using tem¬peratures not already known). Such an approach leads to a set of equations involving unknown temperatures and a solution procedure which is referred to as being implicit. The important characteristic of the implicit procedure is that it leads to a set of equations that must be solved for each time at which the temperature dis¬tribution is required. Surface mining in arctic regions is characterized by many unique problems. Continuous and discontinuous permafrost (perennially frozen ground) occurs in most of the arctic and subarctic areas. Permafrost presents special problems of slope stability. Stability of permafrost depends on its temperature, moisture content, and material type. Permafrost slope fails due to solifluction, disturbance of ice-rich slopes, and liquefaction. Drilling and blasting of frozen ground present special problems. Depending on their degree of saturation with water, freezing soils and rocks have a number of important characteristics that affect blasting efficiency. Metals used in mining equipment and mining structures require special selection. At low temperatures, many steels lose most of their normal ductility and toughness (resistance to brittle fracture). This paper discusses engineering solutions to unique problems of arctic mining.

If components of a gas-liquid stream react with each other and with stationary solids, involving parallel and sequential, reversible and irreversible, and slow and instantaneous reactions, the process can be defined by a set of simultaneous differential rate equations and simulated as multistage semibatch re¬actors. Each stage is divided into finite time increments. Within each increment, even the simultaneous reactions are treated as sequential. The proposed method follows process evolution from non-steady state startup to normal operating conditions. It allows computing byproduct buildup in recycles, tracer response curves and, in case of underground processes, expansion to adjacent parts of the deposit.

However excellent the geologic map of an area is, it can only show what is exposed on the ground. It cannot and should not generalize the information nor complete the picture by inference: this is left to the examiner. Consequently, it becomes justified for him to use all expressions of geologic structure in order to gain an additional dimension in geologic interpretation, and particularly so in mineral exploration. In previous studies related to Arizona, the known faults were the starting points and a host of interpolated, supporting geologic factors described in earlier publications ascertained the presence of a series of structural trends and lineaments found to be rather continuous and persistent, even though unsubstantiated by geologic maps. In present studies pertaining to the humid environment, with the same aim of seeking major structural trends and lineaments, the starting points are morphologic expressions such as straight lakes and straight segments of rivers, among others, because there generally is not enough geology available. An example is given herewith for an area that straddles the International Border, north of Spokane. In both semi-arid and humid environments, one observes that mineral deposits quite often occur close to the intersection of a major fracture or lineament with some secondary trend.

The mining industry faces many difficult challenges, for example, lower ore grades, smaller and deeper deposits, and longer transportation distances. In the past, there have been remarkable innovations in both equipment and the types of mining methods for which it is used, which have resulted in economies of scale. This has led to an increased use of bulk mining methods, like sublevel and block caving, which has increased productivity and reduced costs. Haulage alone plays a major role. Current haulage techniques are a significant cost driver, which account for between 15 and 30% of the overall capital investment (capex) in a mine and are an increasingly part of the operating costs (opex). The paper introduces a simulation tool of main haulage system in underground mining. Therefore, performances and the costs of the three most common underground main haulage systems, rail, truck, and conveyor, are calculated using a developed modeling tool. The tool was applied and validated in a case study carried out with the LKAB Kiruna Mine in northern Sweden.

California's annual production of >11 million tons of cement, at a value of over $640 million, comes from eight companies, which operate 11 plants. Cement is California's second most important mineral commodity, representing 25% of its total annual mineral production. Although most of the cement produced is consumed within the state, current export locales include the Pacific Northwest, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, and New Mexico. An enumeration of the components required to produce cement is deceptively simple: calcium oxide (65%), silica (20%), alumina (4-5%), iron (3-4%), and calcium sulfate (4%) as a retardant admixture. The last, and most expensive, ingredient in cement manufacture is energy. Detrimental materials in cement mixes include excess .magnesium, alkalis, heavy metals, sulfur, and other volatiles. Each of the 11 cement plants in California requires a unique chemical solution of combined raw materials to produce a uniform product: portland cement. The geologist proposing solutions for the additive raw materials in cement manufacture must have a thorough knowledge of a particular cement plant's needs. In the California cement market, keeping the costs of additive raw materials down is one way to also stay competitive, and using a combination of natural and waste materials as additive raw materials allows cement producers to stay competitive.

Rod mills were developed, as a logical substitute for the rolls crusher when larger tonnages had to be handled, on a continuous basis. Today, with even larger tonnages to process, the trend is to install larger equipment, automate the plant and develop the highest availability possible, in order to cut costs. The rod mills, because of design limitations in size and speed 1'2, are not able to meet these new requirements. The autogenous mill was a timely development and serves as an excellent alternative for ores that are suitable to this type of grinding. When ores are not amenable to autogenous grinding, selection of a flowsheet is dictated by liberation characteristics and unit operations to be used for mineral recovery.. The following alternatives are available: (a) Multiple rod mills, capable of drawing no more than 2000 HP each, followed by ball mills. (b) Gyradisc crusher followed by two stages of ball mill grinding.3 (c) Tertiary crushing followed by closed circuit single stage ball mills grinding to approximately -100 mesh, as in the copper industry. Recent major floods have inundated Historic Ellicott City, Maryland, resulting in loss of life and property damage. Howard County, Maryland, has developed the Ellicott City Safe and Sound Plan to mitigate the risk of flash flooding in the Historic District, including a proposed stormwater conveyance tunnel. Challenges to overcome include thick zones of saprolite along the alignment, multiple near-surface structures, and minimal rock cover under an active railroad, while minimizing impacts to the public and historic structures. The project will also pursue recognition through the ISI Envision verification process.

This paper presents a quantitative research (QNR) methodology, collaboratively conducted with a group of mining experts, to assess the knowledge management (KM) landscape in the Greek mining industry. The methodology involves a framework for structured data collection using questionnaires, statistical analysis, discussion on critical methodological aspects, and interpretation of results focusing on key aspects of interest for designers of KM systems. The paper concludes by summarizing the methodology’s outcome and proposing perspectives for further research.

"Chloride ions and their interactions with two organic smoothing additives – Cyquest® N-900 and HydroStar® 4208 – during copper electrodeposition were explored using cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results revealed that chloride ions, up to a concentration of 40 mg/L, depolarized the copper deposition reaction. A combination of chloride ions and Cyquest N-900 inhibited the depolarization reaction during copper electrodeposition. It is proposed that the chloride ions acted as bridging ligands between copper and Cyquest N-900. Addition of HydroStar at a concentration of 2.5 mg/L depolarized the copper deposition reaction when no chloride ions were present. This behavior did not change with the addition of chloride ions at the concentrations tested, indicating that chloride ions and the polysaccharide do not interact.IntroductionElectrowinning is a major production method used to obtain high-purity copper. In modern tankhouses, copper is electrodeposited onto stainless steel blanks and then stripped, washed and bundled for delivery. Significant improvements in the quality of electrowon copper have been made over the last few decades. Additives, temperature, current density, electrolyte concentrations and agitation are known to influence the quality of copper electrodeposits (Jenkins and Eamon, 1990).The influence of chloride and organic additives on copper electrodeposition has been the subject of considerable research. The addition of small quantities of chloride and organic additives has been recognized to significantly improve the properties of copper electrodeposits. These additives are critical in the prevention of dendrite growth and the production of smooth, dense cathode deposits.Chloride ions have been reported to catalyze the copper reduction reaction and assist in the production of uniform deposits (Lakshmanan et al., 1977; Sun and O’Keefe, 1992). Moreover, it is generally agreed that chloride ions depolarize the copper deposition process at low (several millimolar) chloride concentrations. This is because chloride ions catalyze the reduction of copper (II) ions to copper (I) ions (Cu2+ ? Cu+ + e-) in the rate-limiting step of this process (O’Keefe and Hurst, 1978; Ilgar and O’Keefe, 1997; Hebert, 2005; Shao, Pattanaik and Zangari, 2007)."

The use of the underground space has been a recurring issue in human history, whereas the reasons for building subsurface structures have changed over time. In the decades to come, the world will be marked by a variety of underground projects never before seen. This paper describes a series of characteristic challenges of designing and building underground freight transportation systems, with reference to the example of Cargo sous terrain, a privately funded underground logistics project in Switzerland. It provides an overview of contracting practices that allow these challenges to be addressed with success.

Mineral exploration involves the selective collection, organization, evaluation, and interpretation of geologic and economic data. The sources for such data are original field observations and existing documented information of various types (publications, reports, maps, company files, etc.). As exploration data are accumulated, their storage, organization, indexing, and J retrieval is key to exploration progress. Initial use of computers by mineral exploration groups indicates that data can be meaningfully handled by machines. A computer system makes possible: 1) the storage, manipulation, collation, and selective retrieval of data; 2) the utilization of data banks developed by geologic service groups and available at relatively low cost; and 3) the retrieval of stored data more rapidly, completely, and effectively than by manual systems. Profitable utilization of these capabilities is conditioned by several factors, particularly by the information selected for the system data base and by the design of the computer system itself.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Homestake Mining Co., and the University of Utah, is conducting a field demonstration to evaluate the behavior of rock masses supported with cable bolts. One of two rock masses being studied is supported with both conventional and birdcage cables. This rock mass is located between the 6500 and 6650 levels of the 45-4BN stope. 21 ledge. The second rock mass is the hanging wall of the D-limb stope between the 3500 and 3650 levels near the Ross Shaft and is supported with conventional cables. The primary objectives of the project are to monitor the behavior of the two rock masses during mining using extensometers and cable support strain gauges, after which the rock will be modeled using the finite-element code UTAH III. Field data will be used to verify the modeling. In addition. a comparison between the effectiveness of conventional and birdcage cables will be made.

In recent years, a great deal of effort has been put into automating mining equipment with the goal of improving worker health and safety and increasing mine productivity. Significant progress has been made in automating mining equipment such as load-haul-dumps and drills in underground environments where global positioning systems are unavailable. This paper addresses automating the task of positioning the shuttle-car (SC) under the continuous-miner (CM) coaldischarge conveyor during cutting and loading operations. A stereo depth camera is mounted on the SC. Machine learning based algorithms are applied on the camera’s output to identify the CM discharge conveyor and segment the scene into various regions such as roof, ribs, and personnel. This information is used to plan the shuttle car path to the CM discharge conveyor. The approach currently uses a 1/6th scale continuous miner and shuttle car in an appropriately scaled mock mine

Grinding has a marked effect on concentrator recovery and opera- ting cost, improved operation through automatic control can enhance plant performance. The correct application of automatic control can only be accomplished after the basic process variables and their effect on mill operation have been defined. This paper develops a control system for a closed circuit grinding system. Typical control systems such as feed, water flow, level and circulating load are discussed. A method of determining controllability is outlined using the calculated reaction curve technique. Various successful methods of automatic grinding control applications are discussed and future possibilities are outlined. Although this paper primarily deals with closed circuit wet grinding circuits, the principles involved can be readily applied to other processes.

In metallurgical applications, coal fulfills dual roles as a chemical feed stock and as a fuel source. These applications range from cokemaking, ironrnaking (including pulverized coal injection), foundry, basic oxygen furnace / electric arc furnace coal additions, direct ironrnaking, Corex, and the futuristic direct steelmaking. In all steelmaking related processes, chemical reactions are simultaneously temperature and chemical dependent. Therefore, coals used in these processes must consistently comply with specific quality parameters in order to promote efficient operations. This paper limits discussion of Metallurgical Coal Quality to cokemaking and ironmaking applications. Its purpose is to present the customer's perspective on the control of critical coal and coke properties.
