The US Bureau of Mines con¬ducted research on underground stope leaching of metalliferous ores. Leaching underground would minimize the environmental impact of ore processing on the surface and would maximize minable reserves. An important aspect of this process is the minimization of pregnant solution losses and groundwater contamination by leach solutions. Bulkhead design and construction are important issues for solution control and stope-leaching economics. A reinforced-concrete bulkhead was designed, constructed and tested for solution control in an underground mine near Idaho Springs, CO. This paper presents the bulkhead-design methodology and construction procedure.

Introduction Heavy media separation (HMS), also called dense media or float¬sink separation, is one of the newer forms of gravity concentration. Though the concept can be traced to the last century, the process has enjoyed its major growth since 1940. Heavy liquid separation is a mutation. The heavy media process is used extensively to clean coal and for the concentration of a wide variety of ores such as those of iron, lead-zinc, chrome, manganese, tin, tungsten, fluorspar, magnesite, sylvite, garnet, diamonds, gravel, etc. It may be used where ever a significant density difference occurs between two minerals, and commercial separations are typically made in the range of 1.3 to 3.8 sp gr. The particle size treated ranges downward from 6-8 in. top size. Particles greater than about 1/16-in. (10 mesh) may be treated in a "static" bath, though for reasons of separation efficiency, + 1/2 -in- feed is usually preferred. For particles less than this size, separation in a heavy media cyclone is generally used. The flowsheet of a typical heavy media process, in this case one using a ferrous medium, is shown in Fig. I. In essence, the process consists of: (1) preparation of the feed usually by wet screening to remove undesired fines, (2) heavy medium separation, and (3) removal and recovery of the medium from the separated products. Many muta¬tions of the basic scheme are possible and numerous options are possi¬ble. HMS offers the following potential advantages:12 1) Ability to make sharp separations. 2) Ability to change the specific gravity of separation quickly to meet changing conditions. 3) Ability to remove products continuously. 4) Ability to treat a broad size range of products. 5) Ease of start-up and shutdown without loss of separating efficiency. 6) Relatively low medium cost and low media losses. 7) Low operating and maintenance costs. 8) High capacity with the use of relatively little floor space. 9) Relatively low capital investment per ton of capacity. The process may be used to produce a finished concentrate, two finished concentrates, or a concentrate and a middling of differing quality, or a preconcentrate by rejection of unwanted gangue. It is an ideal method for the reprocessing of coarse waste dumps. The greatest use for the process lies in coal cleaning and in the preconcentration of ores. The relatively inexpensive heavy media process may be used advantageously to reject large quantities of coarsely crushed gangue. When used in this way, the process will allow: (1) the use of lower cost but less selective mining methods with the "overbreak" material being removed at the front end of the concentrator or preparation plant; (2) a substantial reduction in the quantity of ore that must be finely ground for subsequent mineral liberation and separa¬tion. Since comminution is often the single most expensive step in beneficiation, it is desirable to eliminate as many essentially barren pieces of rock as possible before the grinding step, (3) a decrease in overall plant capital cost per ton of concentrate since the size of the plant from the dense medium step onward will be smaller. Several general references are available,12-18 though much of the technical data on the process is widely scattered in the general litera¬ture. Heavy Liquid Separation Organic Liquids Given sufficient settling time, it is possible to make a perfect separa¬tion between two particles of differing density by placing them in a liquid whose density is intermediate between the two. This means of achieving a perfect separation has proven to be elusive because of problems in feed preparation, particle settling rates, operational considerations, and economic constraints. There are a wide variety of heavy liquids that could be used, most of them halogenated hydrocarbons, and a few typical examples are given in Table 4. These liquids are most commonly used in ore dressing for the laboratory fractionation of ore particles on the basis of specific gravity. Laboratory Separations. Using liquids typified by those given in Table 4, separations are made to develop either the standard washability curves used to estimate the response of a given sample to gravity concentration or to prepare a partition curve to evaluate the effective¬ness of a given gravity separation process or piece of equipment. A typical washability curve is given in Fig. 2.19 Such curves are generated for raw coal, e.g., by treating either the whole or various size fractions of the sample in a series of heavy liquids and analyzing the various specific gravity fractions so produced. The procedure is relatively simple for coal samples because of the ready availability of a wide variety of relatively low cost heavy liquids in the density range 1.2¬-2.0. For ores the problem is much more complicated, because only a few high density liquids, all of rather high cost, are available. Parti¬tion curves are generated in the same manner by treating the separated products in the same liquids. Greater details on the procedures to be used in heavy liquid separa¬tions are to be found in the literature (for coal, Refs. 13, 14 and 19 and for ore, Refs. 20 and 21). For testing coal, calcium and zinc chloride solutions have been used extensively in the past, though today halogenated hydrocarbons (available under the trade name Certigrav) are the preferred media. Acid mine drainage became a reality through the exposure of the first bituminous coal seam, either by man or by nature. At first the small amount of acid formed was quickly and efficiently neutralized by basic rock strata and by neutral or alkaline water. As soon as extensive mining operations overtaxed nature's own defensive measures, acid mine drainage became a problem of concern to government and the coal industry. It was the purpose of the studies conducted at Mellon Institute to accumulate knowledge, both applied and fundamental, relating to the formation and disposal of acid mine effluents. It was during this program that the microbiology of acid mine water was studied. Most bituminous coal mine effluents are highly acidic and contain, along with other ions, high concentrations of ferrous iron. The acid is sulfuric, and. the iron is present as the sulfate; both are the oxidation products of iron sulfides (FeS2) which are present in the form of pyrites, marcasites, or other sulfuritic minerals. The Cannon Mine is located in Chelan County, near Wenatchee, Washington, at the eastern foot of the Cascade Mountains. The mine is situated about two miles from the Columbia River, in the arid Columbia River Valley. Two hydroelectric dams provide electricity for the area, the Burlington Northern Railroad has a switch yard and loading facilities in Wenatchee. Approximately 25,000 people live in the area. The principal industry is fruit farming. Underground mining techniques are used to provide feed for a 2,000 tpd flotation concentrator at the site. The techniques are low- cost, high productivity methods which allow for a high extraction rate along with a high rate of recovery of the minable reserve.

TBMs can last for decades and be rebuilt project after project with proper maintenance. How successful can rebuilt TBMs be? At the DigIndy Tunnel System in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA, a rebuilt TBM was used to great effect. The 6.2 m diameter Main Beam, originally manufactured in 1980, bored 40+ km of tunnels and set three world records in its size class of 6 to 7 m, including a best month of 1,754 m. In this paper, the authors analyze the TBM rebuild, performance and lessons learned to make recommendations for future projects seeking to use rebuilt TBMs over long distances.

When designing an efficient and effective support system for burst-prone ground, it necessary to select the most appropriate, i.e., the ‘right’ support components, including areal and reinforcement components. For this paper, it is assumed that the areal support is not the weakest link and the support performance is controlled by the rock reinforcement and holding components (bolts). We discuss the loading modes of rockbolts under static and dynamic loadings and analyze published data from laboratory and field tests. The mechanisms of energy absorption of dynamic rockbolts are presented and rockbolts are categorized based on factors such as energy absorption capacity, energy absorption rate, direct and indirect energy absorption capacities, rock mass bulking or displacement control, and shearing resistance capacity. Guidelines for selecting the ‘right’ rockbolts to build an effective rock support system for burst-prone ground are provided.

Over the last two decades, the mining industry has spent considerable time and effort in installing sophisticated control systems (including expert systems) to regulate and improve the performance of AG/SAG mills. Yet the need for these systems is often overlooked – unmeasured and uncontrolled variation in the feed material. With AG/SAG mill technology replacing rod and ball mills as primary grinding equipment, the need for careful and thoughtful feed preparation has gone. To maximise mill throughput, operations need to better understand the ore characteristics affecting AG/SAG mill performance. Industrial operating data will be used to illustrate these ideas and concepts. It is often quite surprising which ore characteristics that are the most influential on mill throughput.

"Early on Jan. 9, 2014, approximately 37,800 L (10,000 gal) of crude 4-methylcyclohexanemethanol (MCHM) leaked from a storage tank sitting on the bank of the Elk River near Charleston, WV (WVDEP, 2014; CSB, 2014). MCHM is a chemical commonly used in preparation of fine coal and is considered nonhazardous in terms of transportation, storage regulations and also toxicity (CDC, 2014a). Freedom Industries Inc., a producer and vendor of specialty chemical products, had acquired the storage facility from Etowah River Terminal, LLC just a few weeks prior in December 2013 (WVDEP, 2014; Freedom, 2005). The direct cause of the spill was ultimately determined to be two small holes in the base of the 76-year-old tank, which were created due to corrosion damage (Bauerlein and McWhirter, 2014).The spill site was located a little more than 1.6 km (1 mile) upstream from the intake of a municipal water treatment facility operated by West Virginia American Water (WVAW), which serves a population of 300,000 across nine counties in central West Virginia (CDC, 2014a). In a matter of hours, the leaked MCHM made its way through the treatment facility and into the water of nearby homes and businesses, where its strong smell was noticed almost immediately. On the evening of the spill, WVAW concluded that its conventional treatment processes, which include carbon filters to remove a variety of contaminants from water, were not capable of fully removing the MCHM and a "Do Not Use" order was issued for all customers (WVAW, 2014a).With little information readily available regarding the potential human health effects of MCHM, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) quickly issued an advisory ruling that set a maximum screening level of 1 ppm for safe drinking water (CDC, 2014a). Based on this recommendation, the "Do Not Use" order remained in effect for a total of eight days, until Jan. 17, when the WVAW distribution water was confirmed to have MCHM concentrations below the approved level (WVAW, 2014a). However, due to the pungent odor of the chemical, its presence was still recognizable in the WVAW facility and in consumers’ tap water after the order was lifted (Manuel, 2014). Recent studies have shown that the chemical can be detected in water at sub-ppb concentrations, a fact that undoubtedly added to growing public concern (Rosen et al., 2014; Gallagher et al., 2014). In response to numerous complaints and demands, WVAW continued flushing the treatment facility and pipes until Feb. 25 when MCHM levels were measured below 2 ppb (WVAW, 2014b), and eventually replaced the affected filter media (WVAW, 2014c)."

European coal mines are facing a very difficult situation. Despite a steadily increasing world energy consumption, the sales of European coal mines have been going down and production has to be adapted. The reason is the collapse of energy prices aided by the decreasing rate of U.S. $ to Deutschmark in the last few years. The problems are not due to the development of European mines themselves. Assured energy supplies are an important condition for the health of a nation's economy. Contribution of domestic energy production ensures some degree of independence from world market fluctuations as to supply volumes and price, and maintaining jobs and should be achieved within the framework of economic constellations. Governmental energy programs are planned towards meeting this end.

Many underground instabilities, such as excessive shield loading and roof falls, occur at longwall faces causing safety problems and production losses. Such instability problems are directly related to roof conditions which can be categorized using geological information. . However, most geologic information describing anomalies and variations of immediate and main roofs are not available before mining resulting in unexpected problems in a longwall face. It is apparent that the evaluation of these geologic anomalies provides a great benefit for longwall stability. The purpose of this study is to evaluate roof categories associated with geological anomalies employing fuzzy set theory. The evaluation is based on real-time monitoring information, such as shield leg pressure, developing load on shields, intervals of periodic weighting, and the ratio of developing loads during periodic to normal times. This paper introduces the application of fuzzy set theory for characterizing roof conditions and evaluating of roof similarities.

It is calculated that since the beginning of last century, which practically coincides with the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, our civilization has consumed around 239.5 million tons of copper (see: Table 1). According to the most pessimistic projections of today, with only a 2.5% annual growth rate in demand, we are bound until the end of this century to consume another 200 million tons of copper in remaining 17 years. A recent study made by US Bureau of Mines (1) indicates that the proven ore reserves of 150 major operating mines and about 120 deposits sufficiently explored for development and feasibility studies accumulate a total mass of 49.3 billion tons of ore, assaying an average of 0.82% Cu and containing around 324 million tons of recoverable copper. Consequently, there is a high grade of probability that the bulk of our future ore supplies, for our demand of, say, next 25 years will cane precisely from these mines. The interesting point in USBM study is that it indicates the recoverable byproduct content of these ores and which is: 118.2 million troy ounces of gold 2277.4 million troy ounces of silver 7.1 million tons of lead 24.7 million tons of zinc 1.3 million tons of nickel 3.1 million tons of molybdenum 765 thousand tons of cobalt, and 720 thousand troy ounces of platinum. This information gives us a relatively reliable profile of our future ores for next 25 years, and thus makes possible evaluation of byproduct credits in our future copper mining and producing activities.

The ability of conveyor belts to transport large mass throughputs economically over previously unprepared ground has resulted in this system achieving great and extensive use. A significant component in this development is the conveyor belt itself. The development of high strength steel cord conveyor belts involves the optimising of splice design, the use of excellent rubber material especially in the splice, good craftsmanship during splice production and modern field vulcanisation equipment. The durability of a splice for belts of class St 3000 up to St 790 is expressed by the fatigue strength under dynamic stress. The results obtained with a test method and equipment developed by the University of Hannover indicate the present state of the art in this field. Belts of high nominal strength used on inclined long distance conveyors reach splice fatigue strengths of about 3000 N/mm. The design should only exploit approximately 50% of the fatigue strength determined in the tests as maximum operating stress. IMPORTANCE OF CONVEYOR BELT SYSTEMS The use of conveyor belt technology has expanded considerably over the last decades in the bulk goods transportation sector. Because of the favourable transport costs and the technology's adaptability to specific topographies, belt conveyors frequently represent the most economic solution. When flows of goods are large, as in German lignite mining operations, where masses of up to 40,000 t/h are given, it is the only technically feasible alternative. The use of belt conveyor systems allows the sensible distribution of the waste and the production of the coal (Hager, 1981). But this transportation alternative is also suitable when the masses involved are smaller. Whereas conveyor belts were only suitable for loose bulk goods up until a few years ago, today they are frequently also used for hard rock open cast mines, e.g. in the production of copper ore. Because of the favourable transport costs it is frequently still economic to use mobile crushers with a throughput of up to 10,000 t h 6 which breakdown the large blocks produced y explosives into transportable grain sizes. In many operations, trucks are only used to provide flexibility between the excavator and the crusher, i.e. over short routes, and the long, frequently steep, transport paths to the processing plant or to the spreader are undertaken by belt conveyors (Einenkel et al., 1992). The advantages of belt conveyors, i.e. to cope with large mass flows over inclines and down slopes of up to 1:4 have resulted in this system gaining very extensive use throughout the world. The conveyors can be installed over for the most part unprepared ground with suitable vertical radii, adapted to the locally available belt material. In the process individual conveyor belts with lengths of up to 15 km, and in the underground sector with lift heights of up to 1 km, have been built and operated. This great variety of application possibilities is complemented by a limited ability to pass through horizontal curves. This can be achieved with the help of design measures on the conveyor whilst bearing in mind the characteristics of the belt. STRESSING OF CONVEYOR BELTS IN DIFFERENT TYPES OF PLANT The advantage of conveyor belts compared with other systems is also to be found in the large available service-time window, i.e. the excellent reliability and the low costs of energy consumption and maintenance. It is in particular the reliability of a belt transport system which depends to a great degree on its main component, that is the belt - in all its different types and variations. For this reason, the belt is also given the greatest attention in the development of the individual components, because it is the belt which must be designed optimally with regard to various factors. Improved haul-road conditions can have a positive impact on mine operations, resulting in heightened safety, productivity gains, longer tire life and lower maintenance costs. For these reasons, a monitoring program is required to ensure the operational efficiency of the haul roads. Currently, at Bald Mountain Mine, monthly site severity studies, ad hoc inspections by frontline supervisors or operator feedback reporting are used to assess road conditions. These methods are subjective and provide low temporal resolution data. This case study presents novel unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technologies, applied on a critical section of haul road at Bald Mountain, to showcase the potential for monitoring haul roads. The results show that orthophotos and digital elevation models can be used to assess the road smoothness condition and to check the road design compliance. Moreover, the aerial mapping allows detection of surface water, rock spillage and potholes on the road that can be quickly repaired/removed by the dedicated road maintenance team.

Precious metals are commonly believed to be recovered along with sulfide minerals in flotation, but a few neutron activation analyses showed that the recoveries of gold and silver were unexpectedly low. Reasons for low recoveries of platinum group metals remained unresolved due to interferences in the analyses. Electron microprobe, scanning electron microscope, and scanning Auger microprobe analyses have identified nickel arsenide minerals in the ore and confirmed a close association of platinum group metals with the arsenide minerals as minute inclusions. These results indicated a need for re-evaluation of flotation procedures that have so far ignored special problems related to arsenide minerals. The electrochemical and flotation behaviors of nickel arsenide and their application to the flotation recoveries of precious metals from copper-nickel bearing Duluth gabbro are presented.

Usually stresses generated by explosive charges during blasting are considered to propagate through materials in a spherical manner. Although conical stress-waves had been suggested by a few investigators they have never been clearly defined or critically observed. An experimental technique using models and lengths of Mild Detonating Fuse was developed to produce conical stress-waves and study their effects. Several materials with different properties were tested to compare the influence of those properties on wave shape and crater formation. The investigations showed that whenever column charges were end-initiated, conical stress-forms were produced if the explosive's velocity exceeded the energy propagation velocity of the surrounding material. The stress-cone angle significantly affected fragment size and shape as well as the geometry of craters produced.

The conventional Froude number is blind to the presence of solids, their density and their concentration in a stream of slurry mixture such as tailings flowing in an open channel. This often leads to rough approximations of subcritical, critical and supercritical regimes, based on one phase flow Froude number, limiting subcritical to a value smaller than 0.8 and supercritical to values above 1.4, as proposed in the past by Green, Abulnaga and other authors. While acceptable for small flows, such approximations can be uneconomical for the larger flows encountered in some modern plants that treat up to half a million t/day. A review of concepts of a densimetric Froude number sheds some light on the effect of solids on stratification prior and subsequent to a hydraulic jump. While the approach is heavily borrowed from modern sedimentology, it provides a useful tool to designers of large launders or open channel tailings systems. These concepts are reviewed with some practical examples.

Simulating a ventilation network of an underground mine can help in solving complex ventilation systems with many features, selecting proper fan specifications, location and settings. Early computer systems running simple network simulations were able to provide solutions to the most common and immediate problems regarding underground mine airflow. The more advanced systems available today can perform more sophisticated modeling and simulation of a mine?s ventilation network and present their results in a more understandable and easy to communicate form. This paper presents a ventilation network case study from an underground mine. All aspects of mine ventilation network modeling and simulation are discussed as well as the results from the simulation process. The algorithms and techniques used are thoroughly explained. Some useful guidelines for the application of ventilation network software are also provided in the text.

The Amax Gold Guanaco mine is located in the Atacama Desert, approximately 260 km southeast of Antofagasta, Chile. The 6,000 tpd leach operation produces approximately 90,000 oz of gold, and 360,000 oz of silver per year. Production began in 1987, and the operation has been managed by Amax Gold since 1992. The mine has been plagued in the past by high operating costs and low production. Several significant changes have been made to the operations which have resulted in lower costs and higher operating efficiencies. A review of these changes is presented herein.
