There are two places in the world where potash, trade name for potassium chloride, is economically recovered from naturally occuring brines by solar evaporation. One is at the Dead Sea and the other at Wendover, Utah. American Potash and Chemical at Trona, California recovers potash from natural brines, but uses fuel to accomplish evaporation. Under proper meteorological conditions the use of solar evaporation might be desirable from the economical standpoint. Of course, this may not be true when, if by artificial evaporation, a group of very valuable salts are recovered. This is the case of the American Potash operation at Trona. Solar evaporation has its limits. The working temperature is low. We may say, just to cover most areas of the world where solar evaporation may be practical, that it will take place between 18°C and perhaps around 45°C. In most cases the average working temperature expected will be around 25°C.

SCOTT COULTER: Thanks, Eric. Thank you all for coming. Our first speaker today is Claude Bazin. Claude received a degree in metallurgical engineering in 1980 from Laval University in Quebec. He worked for a short time in a mineral processing plant and then returned to Laval to complete graduate studies in the field of process modeling and control. He obtained his master's degree in 1983 and his Ph.D. in 1990. In 1987 he joined Brunswick Mining, New Brunswick, as research metallurgist and subsequently process control engineer. In 1990 he joined Helzfield Mines, New Brunswick, as senior metallurgist. In 1991 he accepted a position of professor at the department of mining and metallurgy at Laval University, a position he is still holding. He's a member of the CIM, TMS, and the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration. Claude's topic today is "On-Line Material Balance for Flotation Plants." INTRODUCTION CLAUDE BAZIN: During the last two decades, the on-stream analyzer (OSA) has gained the stat& of key instrument for the control of flotation plants. The OSA is currently used in almost every sulphide flotation plant (Leroux and Franklin 1994), and its application to oxide mineral flotation plants is increasing. The OSA assays are sent to the flotation operators via an operator console or to control loops of various degrees of complexity (McKee 1991) implemented in a distributed control system (DCS). Operators and/or controllers take control actions based on these assays to ensure an adequate operation of the plant. Although this application pays off very rapidly for the purchase of the OSA, one could ask, "Could we get more from the OSA?" Some plants reported the use of OSA measurements for process optimization (McKee 1991). The optimization strategy is based upon economic indices calculated from metal recovery using the 2-product formula (Wills 1992, p. 124). The 2-product formula is sensitive to measurement errors in the assays and can lead to considerable scatter in the calculated indices (Hodouin et al. 1993). Least squares algorithms provide a robust alternative to filter out measurement errors (Spring 1992). This paper presents some applications of a recursive least squares algorithm that provides real-time estimates of the mass flow rates within a flotation plant using OSA and mass flow rate measurements.

"INTRODUCTION The public understanding of green solutions today is based on the definition of sustainability adopted by the Brundtland Commission (World Commission on Environment and Development) in 1987: “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” Over time this initial definition evolved to identify three distinct factors impacting sustainability that are often referred to as the “Triple Bottom Line”: Economic, Environmental and Social. The triple bottom line approach seeks to drive outcomes that create maximum value for all stakeholders. In the last ten years purveyors of water and wastewater tunnel solutions have found themselves on the wrong side of a politically polarizing issue in the crosshairs of politicians, environmental activists and community groups branding tunnels as expensive, “gray” and not-sustainable. Tunnels under design were stopped and large planned tunnel programs were delayed or canceled. Therefore being sustainable and “green” is not simply using natural vegetation, but creating an asset that meets current and future needs and will not become a future liability. As this paper will discuss, tunnel projects embody a sustainable triple bottom line project well, are equally sustainable as green infrastructure, and have begun to gain awareness for their sustainability. GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE CHANGES TUNNELING LANDSCAPE The green movement quickly swept across the nation in the mid to late 2000’s and was a hot topic in the media and at all the local, regional and national industry conferences. Politicians espoused the benefit of green infrastructure including job creation, urban renewal, aesthetics, property values economics and sustainability. The political microscope was focused the closest on stormwater and wastewater management, particularly in communities responding to combined sewer overflow (CSO) consent decrees from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). As communities with CSO problems evaluated their long term control program (LTCP), local government officials and planners began to balk at the huge price tag required for compliance and began looking for alternatives. “Green” infrastructure was proposed as lower cost solution that could be used to offset capital-intensive “gray” infrastructure like new sewers, storage tanks, tunnels, and treatment facilities. In addition, including green infrastructure in a previously negotiated LTCP required a reset on the entire planning process, additional studies and more planning which would push capital investment further off into the future, subsequently delaying unpopular user rate increases. As a result, tunnel projects as well as trenched conveyance and treatment plant projects that had not yet started construction were stopped, delayed or substantially changed."

Calcium carbonate is one of the most widely used industrial minerals in applications like cement, lime, agriculture, power plant fluegas desulfurization (FGD) and construction aggregates. Most applications are generally high-volume and low value ($9/t or $10/st) or less free-on-board (f.o.b.) mine site) uses of this material. Specialty uses of ground calcium carbonate (GCC) are typically referred to as ?performance mineral? or ?extender and ?ller? applications. Primary specialty markets for GCC include paper and plastics as well as a number of construction applications including joint compounds, carpet backing, paint, and adhesives, caulks and sealants (ACS). Other important specialty applications for GCC include rubber, food and personal care products. A new and growing application for GCC is in nonwoven fabrics, where this mineral replaces a small percentage of the polymer. Typical specialty applications for GCC are color sensitive and require extremely white/bright materials. Although deposits of limestone are located in most states, high brightness resources are relatively rare and controlled by a limited group of suppliers.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) from both abandoned surface and underground mines is a serious problem. The flow of water and changes in quality over time from abandoned mines is important in determining remediation strategies. Acid mine drainage from surface mines is estimated to last for 10-20 years, while estimates of acid drainage from underground mines vary from 10- 100s of years. Fifteen underground mine discharges in West Virginia were studied to compare water quality changes between 1968 and 1999 to see if our data are consistent with other studies. Each of the discharges were categorized into one of three groups: undisturbed since 1968, affected by surface mining since 1968, and reclaimed. Comparing water quality between 1968 and 1999, the discharges in the undisturbed category showed a 35 to 95% improvement in acid concentration and a 40 to 99% reduction in iron concentration. The discharges affected by surface mining showed the most dramatic improvement. For acidity, iron, and aluminum, the percent improvements were all above 44%, and in most cases in the 70 to 99% range. In the reclaimed category, one of the four discharges declined in water quality. Discharge 82 showed a 76% increase in acidity, and iron and aluminum concentrations worsened by 58 and 96%. However, discharges 15 and 74 improved in water quality with a 94% acid load improvement and a 95% iron load improvement at both sites.

Improvements in cost efficiency, noise control, environmental design and ergonomics ? the mining and construction industries are facing demands on many fronts. The international manufacturers of construction machinery are responding to these challenges, and they will be presenting their innovations in all these fields at bauma 2013. bauma, the international trade fair for mining and construction machinery, mining vehicles, and building material machines, takes place from April 15 to 21, 2013 at the Messe Munchen exhibition center in Munich, Germany. The last bauma, in 2010, attracted 3,256 exhibitors from 53 countries, and more than 420,000 visitors from more than 200 nations. Covering a total of 555,000 m2 (5.97 million sq ft) of exhibition space, bauma is one of the largest trade shows in the world. This year?s fair is expected to surpass the 2010 figures. Here are some examples of the new developments visitors can expect to see at the show.

A comparison is presented of coal pyrolysis at temp¬eratures ranging from 4090 to 497°C and thermal dissolution of coal in tetralin at temperatures ranging from 350° to 450,°C, both utilizing a Utah high-volatile bituminous coal. The initial coal pyrolysis reactions are second order with an enthalpy of activation of 35.6 kcal per mole. The fraction of total product yield produced under second order conditions ranges from 67% at 409°C to 96% at 497°C. The process then gradually deteriorates to a first order reaction in the later stages with enthalpy of activation of 4.1 kcal, per mole. The initial reactions of solution of coal in tetralin are second order with an enthalpy of activation of 28.8 kcal per mole. The fraction of total product produced under second order conditions ranges from 63% at 350°C' to 94% at 450°C. The dissolution process then gradually changes to first order in the later stages with enthalpy of activation of 15.6 kcal per mole. A model is presented which relates the two processes and explains, the significance of the above similarities.

As the search for minerals leads to deeper mines the need to control water inflow into mine shafts and mine workings will grow. As shal¬lower more readily available minerals are exploited, ore bodies which were previously uneconomic be cause of their depth will now become attractive targets. In known mining districts new ore bodies are being discovered down dip of existing ones. In the west many metal deposits are being developed in rocks of the mountain front pediments, frequently covered by several hundred feet of saturated alluvium. Greater depth often means that workings are developed well below existing water tables, creating high hydrostatic heads adjacent to mine workings. The purpose of this paper is to review some of the methods available for determining if water control will be necessary and to present some of the techniques for locating water bearing zones and the amount of water to be expected. The paper will concentrate on problems associated with water control in mine shaft development, although many of the exploratory techniques are similar to those needed for assessing overall mine water inflow problems. A brief case history on water control problems in mine shafts in the Grants mineral belt of northwestern New Mexico is presented. Water control during shaft sinking presents some unique features. First, the problem is a relatively short term one, since water control is often necessary only while the shaft is being sunk. Control measures may be necessary only while the shaft is open into the water bearing zone and the lining installed and cemented. Secondly, limited working space within the shaft area presents difficulties in handling large amounts of water inflow. The presence of water in the shaft working area increases sinking time and the potential hazard to miners. Finally, there is the economics of shaft sinking. While the shaft is being sunk no ore is being produced and there is every incentive to minimize costs.

Introduction Evidence from blast furnace operations has indicated that using pellets with a higher ISO low temperature reducibility, a lower SiO2 content, and better resistance to low temperature degradation results in considerable coke savings and improved furnace operation. Although these benefits could not be directly related to reducibility differences alone, we believed there was sufficient evidence of the advantages in improved pellet reducibility to warrant laboratory investigation of ways and means to effect such improvements. It is well known that pellet reducibility can be significantly altered by changes in the basicity and the amount of non-iron oxide constituents. Past work (Friel and Erickson, 1980, 1982; Saeki et al., 1977; Thanning, 1974) has shown that with increased MgO contents, and at optimum CaO/S1O2 ratios, significant improvement in low temperature reducibility can be attained. The improved properties of such fluxed pellets have reportedly led to increased blast furnace efficiency and productivity (Saeki et al., 1977; Ilmoni, 1975). Less well known, however, is exactly what factors control reducibility in acid pellets. Because of this gap in knowledge, studies were undertaken of the factors affecting reducibility in acid pellets and to estimate their relative significances in modifying reduction behavior. This paper describes that part of our work done to determine the effect of bentonite on reduction behavior. Our approach was to first examine the effect of bentonite's presence on as pure an iron oxide as possible (i.e., a magnetite "superconcentrate" containing about 0.2% SiO2) so as to eliminate any gangue-binder interaction. The next step was to look at bentonite effects on concentrates with only limited amounts of gangue (containing about 1% SiO2), but of two different types, simple and complex silicates. Last, we

Current regulations for fire suppression systems in underground coal mines to protect conveyor belt installations have been in place since the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 was enacted. Over time, the coal conveyer equipment being used and ventilation conditions underground have changed significantly, particularly the width of the conveyor belts and the use of belt air at the face. The effect of these new conditions on the effectiveness of suppression systems during a fire is not known. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a study to evaluate the effect of air velocity, water sprinkler activation temperature and a limited water application time on the effectiveness of water sprinkler fire suppression systems to extinguish large-scale conveyor belt fires. The fire tests were conducted using both new and used 1.8-m-wide, fire-resistant rubber belt that met the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) flame-resistant requirement specified in Title 30, Code of Federal Regulations, part 18, section 18.65 (also known as the 2G test). Tests were conducted using standard response sprinklers with activation temperatures of 68° C and 141° C at air velocities of 0.5 and 5.1 m/s. Two tests were conducted at both air velocities for each sprinkler activation temperature, one using a new belt and one with a used belt. The results showed that the suppression system was able to suppress the fires in ten minutes to the point that a miner could extinguish it with a fire hose. However, in several of the tests, the fire reestablished itself a few minutes after the sprinkler water supply was cut off and quickly grew out of control. This report discusses the large-scale experimental configuration, the installation specifications of the fire suppression system and the results and conclusions regarding the effect of air velocity, sprinkler activation temperature and limited water application on the suppression system performance.

An auxiliary cross-pit mining system, working in tandem with the prime excavator, is evaluated technically, operationally and economically for application in the selective removal and replacement of soils and unconsolidated ovezburden. Previous studies on cross-pit technology and applications of this technology are briefly reviewed. Stratigraphy plus pit, operating and economic parameters are assumed and applied in the evaluation and comparison of a base case dragline system with two alternatives - a dragline/scraper-dozer combination and a drag- line/cross-pit system combination. The economics of the proposed cross-pit system favour it as a viable alternative to conventional systems.

"The mining industry is a tough business. The obstacles faced in attempting to run a mine - much less build a new one - go beyond an orebody’s geology. There was a time when commodity prices dictated whether or not to build or expand a mine. Today, though, the challenges faced by miners include social responsibility, environmental regulations and a myriad of needed permits on several governmental levels that every miner knows will be challenged by opponents every step of the way. With all of those challenges, and others not mentioned here, it’s a wonder anyone would stay in the industry. But they do. In fact, more than 2,100 mining professionals from around the world gathered in Reno, NV last December for the American Exploration and Mining Association’s (AEMA) annual conference. That is an impressive number, considering that commodity prices remain in the doldrums, preventing companies from building many new mines and limiting expansions at existing ones. Even so, attending such a conference allows these mining industry pros to learn new and more efficient ways to operate their mines and plants through the dozens of technical presentations the conference offered. And mingling with their peers provided another avenue for learning. The AEMA conference also attracted many of the industry’s leading equipment and service providers (228 exhibitors in 246 booths). Technical presentationsThe AMEA meeting is known for its variety of high quality technical presentations and the 2014 conference was no exception. Some of the topics include new technologies in surface and underground mining, explorers and emerging producers, mine closure and remediation, regulations and reserves reporting, hydrology and new innovations in mining. INTRODUCTION The Endako deposit was first explored in 1926, but development waited until the early nineteen sixties. It first came under the control of Placer Development in 1963, and early in 1964 a decision to bring it into production was reached. The deposit is located near the geographic center of British Columbia, and is served by an east-west communication system including a paved highway, mainline railway and good telephone, teletype, and computer facilities. The plant area is shown in Figure 1. The operation is known as the Endako Mines Division of Canex Placer Limited of Vancouver. First production was achieved in June, 1965, at a nominal rate of 10,000 tons per day, but it soon was closer to 15,000 tons per day. In 1967, two new grinding and flotation sections brought capacity to the present rate of approximately 27,000 tons per day. With mill heads of around 0.15 percent MoS2, production is about 14,000,000 pounds of molybdenum per year. A flowsheet of the operation is given in Figure 2. A legend for this flowsheet is given in Table 1. Published ore reserves are estimated at 214,500,000 tons at an average grade of 0.143 percent MoS2. Over the past few years, the use of fully grouted bolts to support the roof of underground openings has increased dramatically. While conventionally anchored bolts effectively reinforce the strata of over 80 percent of mine workings, the use of resin grouted bolts in areas of severe roof conditions has resulted in a substantial reduction in roof falls and an overall improvement in both safety and production. The Roof Control Group of Pittsburgh Technical Support Center, Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration, has conducted numerous field and laboratory investigations to isolate parameters which contribute to the effectiveness of both conventional and resin bolting systems. Specially developed strain-gamed resin bolts, compression pads and differential sag stations installed during the mining cycle have generated data reflecting the loading characteristics and resulting roof stability associated with each type of support. Additional investigations have produced optimum installation parameters of the two systems including the effectiveness of thrust/torque controls for conventional bolts and various bolt/ hole diameter combinations for fully grouted rods. Theoretical analyses, coupled with the actual field and laboratory findings and numerous installation observations have facilitated basic comparisons of the working mechanisms and failure modes of both resin and conventional systems.

New York State’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has undertaken the largest transportation project in New York City. The East Side Access Project (ESA) will introduce MTA’s Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) service to the East Side of Manhattan, to a new terminal located beneath the existing, landmark Grand Central Terminal(GCT). Construction of the Manhattan Segment of the project will affect overlying operating facilities of two other MTA entities, Metro-North Railroad (MNR) and New York City Transit (NYCT) and major Midtown Manhattan buildings. The paper describes the evolution of the GCT concept at Manhattan from a shallow alternative proposed by a Major Investment Study (MIS), that would require extensive underpinning of multi-story buildings and have considerable impact on MNR and NYCT operations, to a deep alternative with lesser risk and potential for disruption.

With new mineral deposits found in areas of difficult terrain, and annual production capacity increasing in mines over the last decade, the aerial ropeway is proving to be a viable, economic method of transportation from mine to processing plant. Of the more conventional designs, a bicable ropeway is more suited to difficult country than the simpler monocable. The bicable, however, does have limitations in the difference in levels it can accommodate in one section at a given capacity. This is noticeable where hilly terrain and high capacity imposes a limit on the length of each section. Increasing the number of sections for a relatively short conveying distance tends, in the case of conventional bicable, to unbalance the normally favorable economics of the ropeway. In addition to analyzing hauling rope stresses, other areas have to be considered when looking at high capacity ropeways. Bucket capacity, speed, and the wheel load on track ropes are examples. These and other factors led British Ropeway Engineering Co., of Sevenoaks, Kent, UK, to produce the twin-track system. Using twin track ropes, larger capacity buckets, and, if the height differential warrants, the installation of twin hauling ropes, BRECO produced a ropeway design for areas of hilly terrain and at higher capacities than had been considered suitable for aerial ropeways. Designs have been produced for systems handling 1.5 kt/h (1,650 stph), and the potential exists for expansion to above 2 kt/h (2,200 stph). The arrangement of ropes provides high stability of the cars and is especially suited to areas where high winds occur during normal operation. This development allows the aerial ropeway to be applied economically in difficult areas and at the increasingly high capacities demanded by engineers. Ropeway Transports Limestone to Sudan Cement Plant Maspio Cement Corp. of Atbara, Sudan, will soon use an aerial ropeway to deliver its entire limestone requirement 20 km (12 miles) from quarry to plant. The Atbara plant is located north of Khartoum, near the east bank of the Nile River. The quarry is west of the river, in hills rising from flat desert country. The original transport system was a 24-km (15-mile) railway from the quarry to the west bank and a monocable ropeway that crossed the Nile and continued to the fac¬tory, a distance of about 2.5 km (1.5 miles). This original ropeway had a capacity of 60 t/h (66 stph). With the extension of cement-making capacity in the late 1970s, 2.5 kt/d (2,755 stpd) of limestone was required and a new mono-

Can the United States mining industry achieve its long-stated goal of zero fatalities ? and what will it take to do so? Does it require new laws and regulations, as some propose, and a continuation of the commandand- control model that has been born out of more than 40 years of regulation and enforcement under the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1969? Or, is it time to consider a new model to manage safety and health and drive continuous, sustained improvement? These are questions that many are debating as mine safety performance, while improved, appears mired in a trough where improvement followed by declines seems to have become the rule rather than the exception. Without doubt, U.S. mines have made significant progress in safety performance during the last four decades, yet the stalled decline in fatality numbers, the industry?s report card of its success or failure, has led some to question whether the industry will achieve zero fatalities in U.S. mining by relying solely on the Mine Act?s framework and implementing its regulations. These are questions the CEO-led task force, set up by the National Mining Association (NMA), considered as it sought to identify impediments to zero fatalities posed by the current regulatory regime. Out of that effort came CORESafety, a common safety and health framework that relies on a management system approach to improve safety and health performance. The goal of CORESafety is to achieve zero fatalities and a 50-percent reduction in the rate of injuries in U.S. mining within five years ? 0:50:5. CORESafety is built on the plan-do-checkact model, which has been successfully deployed by industries, mining and nonmining alike, to drive continuous improvement in safety and health performance. The improvements in safety performance that can be achieved by shifting from a command-and-control regulatory approach to a risk-based systems approach built on the plando- check-act model have been documented in numerous industries. For example, the United Kingdom quarrying industry (Fig. 1), not satisfied with the number of reportable accidents being experienced 1995-2000, established a hard target of a 50-percent reduction in the number of reportable accidents during the period 2001- 2005. Having met this target, the industry then established a further target zero for the period 2006-2010. The mechanism to achieve these reductions? The plan-do-check-act model.

This paper is a brief review of the recent history, and the present status of, of the program designed to develop practical new processes for producing pipeline quality gas from coal. Clean synthetic pipeline-quality gas from coal became a major objective during 1971. Agreement was reached with the American Gas Association, Inc., to cosponsor a $120 million, 4-year program to be funded $80 million by Government and $40 million by American Gas Association. The program was first announced by President Nixon in his Energy Message on June 4, 1971, and a portion of the additional funds needed for the program was approved by the Congress in the December 1971 supplemental budget action. A natural gas shortage has developed in the United States and every indication is that it will worsen. Many transmission and distribution companies have already been forced to curtail sales because of the shortage. Large sums are being committed to systems needed to bring liquefied natural gas from abroad and to plants to manufacture synthetic natural gas from petroleum--also largely imported. On the other hand, there is sufficient domestic coal to supply all of the needed gas through the next century. This accelerated program is designed to provide processes for making gas from coal at costs, including security costs, below the imported alternates. As outlined in the President's Energy Message, OCR and A.G.A. have accelerated the coal gasification program to make it possible to construct and operate a "demonstration plant" (semicommercial size) after 1975. Several processes, in various stages of development as will be described later, are being supported. Concurrently, the overall program will be constantly monitored and evaluated with the assistance of an independent, unbiased contractor. C F Braun of Alhambra, California, was selected for this task and has been actively engaged in it for the last several months. Completion of the Hall Street Coal Transfer Terminal in St. Louis marks the beginning of a major shift in the movement of coal to the power generating stations of the Midwest and South Central regions of the United States. The location of the terminal is significant. The 10 million ton- per-year facility is the first high capacity rail-to-barge transfer terminal to be built on the western shore of the Mississippi. This terminal and others to follow will link the massive coal fields of the West with the high coal consuming markets adjacent to the 25,000-mile Inland Waterway System.
