Minerals for electronic and optical uses divide easily into two sections: 1) quartz and 2) minerals other than quartz. QUARTZ The properties of quartz crystal that make it useful for radio communications were discovered in 1918. Since that time, an in¬dustry for the mining and processing of natural quartz crystal has grown, matured, and been almost entirely replaced by new tech¬nology. The new technology still involves quartz crystal, but ma¬terial that is grown rather than mined. An economic summary of the commercial growing of quartz crystals has a place in a handbook directed to the mineral engi¬neering industry because quartz crystals have long been an impor¬tant commercial mineral, and the raw material for cultured quartz - ¬that is to say, quartz crystals grown through the ingenuity of man - is still natural quartz. Nearly all the natural crystals that have been used for elec¬tronics and optics came from Brazil. The larger pieces which met rigorous standards of quality were used for electronic and, to a lesser extent, optical components. Smaller pieces and fragments were used for vitreous silica. The need for high quality material in quantity led to US government sponsored research and exploration programs in the 1940s. No deposits meeting the very rigid requirements for electronic-grade quartz were found, but other projects resulted in the development of a process for the factory growth of beautiful crystals of prescribed shape, size, and quality. Domestic deposits of appropriate quality were identified to use as raw materials for the quartz culturing process. The development of the cultured quartz crystal illustrates the success that technology can have in adapting a product of the mine to increasingly sophisticated uses. A remarkable achievement per¬haps, but foreshadowed by experiments by Giorgio Spezia (1908), an Italian geologist studying the relative effects of temperature and alkaline environment on the solubility of quartz. Modem radio equipment is most often controlled as to fre¬quency by the presence in the circuit of a separately added crystal¬ - the 1918 discovery responsible for the existence and growth of the quartz industry. The crystal is quartz, but this component is a carefully oriented and prepared slice from a crystal, but not a crystal as recognized by a rock hound or seen in a museum. How quartz operates to control frequencies is not a proper subject for a handbook on industrial minerals, and references should be consulted (Cady, 1964, Mason, 1964). Quartz belongs to a class of materials called dielectrics: those that do not conduct an electric current but permit electric fields to exist and act across them. Quartz shows the piezoelectric effect, which means that when a quartz plate is mechanically deformed against its natural stiffness, one of its surfaces becomes negatively charged, the other positively charged. When the plate is released quickly from the stress, the charges disappear as the plate regains its original shape, but because of mechanical momentum the plate deforms in the opposite direction (to a lesser amount) and the surfaces correspondingly become charged in the opposite direction. By thinly coating the two surfaces with metal and attaching flexible wires, these charges can be brought into an electronic circuit. If the surfaces are suddenly electrically charged by movement of current through the wires, the converse piezoelectric effect occurs and the plate deforms. Carry the thought further and it is realized that an alternating current flowing through the wires responds to the mechanical oscillation. By controlling the thickness of the plate, its mechanical vibration frequency can be varied through a wide range. One type of quartz plate, the AT-cut, has a precisely defined orientation with respect to the crystallographic axes of the crystal and vibrates on a microscopic scale much as a book would deform when placed flat on a table and the top cover moved parallel back and forth with the hand. At least 17 other orientations have been studied, some of which have preferred uses in various applications (Cady, 1964). The quartz crystal industry is composed of three main segments (excluding fused quartz and quartz used for optical purposes): 1. Natural electronic-grade quartz crystals. Mined quartz suitable for fabrication into piezoelectric units. Zlobik (1981a) esti¬mated the waste to ore ratio at 1:1000 to 1000 000, depending upon the deposit. 2. Lasca. Mined quartz usable as feedstock in the production of cultured quartz. Approximately 0.63 kg of lasca are required to produce 0.45 kg of cultured quartz. 3. Cultured quartz. Cultured quartz is produced from lasca feed¬stock in a process of crystal growth in an autoclave under conditions of heat, pressure, and time. It is estimated that 0.45 kg of cultured quartz is equivalent to 1.4 to 4.5 kg of natural quartz crystal in yield of commercial quartz suitable for slicing into piezoelectric units. Most coal being used in the United States has been subjected to one or' more processes of coal preparation. The physical and chemical characteristics of a coal have a marked influence on the ultimate uses that coal may have. The selection of the proper preparation processes may similarly be important in producing the best practical coal product for any particular use. The physical composition and distribution of physical constituents in the coal will partially determine the efficiency of the preparation process chosen and conversely distribution and concentration of coal macerals will, to a degree, be controlled by the preparation process. A number of preparation processes have been evaluated to determine this interrelation. If a coal having' certain specifications is desired, these evaluations trill assist in providing information needed for the production of this coal.

The survival chances of trapped miners in underground mines depend on how quickly they can be located and rescued post-accident. During entrapments, emergency rescue is highly desired but can be hindered by the lack of positioning information when a fit-for-purpose missing-person locator system is not available. Various types of missing-person locator systems are available to aid search-and-rescue operations. From the wide range of the available systems, selecting the most suitable one becomes the next challenge. The available systems have not been measured if they are fit-for-purpose or not, and to what situation. This study proposes user requirements that can be used as a guideline to facilitate the system selection process. These user requirements provide a framework for the design and development of a fit-for-purpose missing-person locator system. The user requirements can also be used for evaluating the performances of a particular system, predict its success, and also drive future research toward developing new technology to enhance the capabilities of the current systems.

Downhill, or regenerative conveyors have always been a challenge to the design engineer due to their natural instability under load. The last decade has seen the appearance of high tonnage, high negative lift conveyors with several hundred meters of drop. These conveyors have made necessary the development of new braking systems and intelligent drive controls to address their starting and stopping requirements under various load conditions. This paper describes the critical design criteria of large regenerative conveyors and some of the advances in mechanical braking systems and drive control technology developed by Conveyor Dynamics, Inc. (CDI) to address their specific requirements.

This development has been made possible by continuous improvement driven by innovation. Based on a generic description of the innovation process and the innovation system, the paper has used the development of modern tunnel drilling in the Norwegian tunnelling industry to discuss the characteristics of its innovation system with a focus on human capital issues and knowledge management.

Sulfur is a nonmetallic element widely distributed in nature and of great physical and economic importance. It is the 14th most abundant element in the Earth's crust (0.06%) and an important constituent of animal and plant life. Sulfur has been known and used since ancient times for a number of medicinal and industrial uses. At present, most sulfur is used to generate sulfuric acid that is used in a wide variety of industrial processes, particularly the production of fertilizer. Because of this, sulfuric acid (and hence sulfur) consumption is often regarded as a good index of a nation's industrial development. In the past, sulfur was mined from surface occurrences in several geologic environments, and was used in relatively small amounts. With time, the uses of sulfur and sulfuric acid expanded, as has the need for larger quantities of these commodities. Sulfur is now mined from both surface and underground deposits, and is recovered as a byproduct from a number of industrial processes. Despite valiant efforts and years of work by sulfur explorationists and others, many aspects of sulfur mineralization remain controversial. Almost as controversial is the spelling of the word sulfur. The English spelling sulphur commonly is used outside America and in the American sulfur mining industry, but sulfur is the correct American spelling as approved by the American Chemical Society, the American Geological Institute, and many others. Those new to the American sulfur industry often find it puzzling to be reprimanded for using the correct American spelling. Sulfur resources are abundant and widespread, but the extent to which they can be classified as reserves is constrained by pre- vailing prices and extraction technologies. At present, sulfur can be economically mined from very few deposits. The sulfur industry is roughly divisible into two sectors: voluntary (or discretionary) and involuntary (or nondiscretionary). In voluntary production, the mining of sulfur or pyrites is the sole objective, and the recovery of the resource is as complete as economic conditions will allow. During involuntary production, sulfur or sulfuric acid (termed recovered sulfur) are produced as byproducts, and the quantity of the output is dictated by the demand for the primary product. Voluntary sulfur now accounts for only about 35% of the elemental sulfur produced worldwide, and most inves- tigators believe that voluntary sulfur will be less important in the future. Sulfur sources and products are described as follows (after Barker, 1983): Sulfur Sources: Combined sulfur-sulfur that occurs in nature combined with other elements, commonly referring to sulfides and sulfates. Cupriferous pyrites-pyrite containing minor amounts of cop- per sulfides. Hydrogen sulfide-a toxic gas that occurs in petroleum and natural gas. Involuntary sulfur-sulfur produced as a byproduct in response to legislative or process mandates. Native sulfur-naturally occurring elemental sulfur. Nonferrous metal sulfides-opper, lead, zinc, nickel, and molybdenum sulfides that are processed for their metal content. Organic sulfur complex organic sulfur compounds that occur in petroleum, coal, oil shale, and tar sands. Pyrites-iron sulfide minerals that include pyrite, marcasite, and pyrrhotite. Sulfate sulfur-sulfur contained in anhydrite and gypsum. Voluntary sulfur-sulfur produced in response to market demand. Basic Sulfur Products: Acid sludge-contaminated sulfuric acid usually returned to acid plants for reconstitution. Brimstone-synonymous with crude sulfur. Bright sulfur-crude sulfur free of discoloring impurities and bright yellow in color. Broken sulfur-solid crude sulfur crushed to -8 in. Byproduct sulfuric acid-sulfuric acid produced as a byproduct of a metallurgical or industrial process, generally relating to combined sulfur sources. Crude sulfur-commercial nomenclature for elemental sulfur. Dark sulfur-crude sulfur discolored by minor quantities of hydrocarbons, ranging up to 0.3% carbon content. Elemental sulfur-processed sulfur in the elemental form produced from native sulfur or combined sulfur sources, generally with a minimum sulfur content of 99.5%. Formed sulfur-elemental sulfur cast or pressed into particular shapes to enhance handling and to suppress dust generation and moisture retention. Frasch sulfur-elemental sulfur produced from native sulfur sources by the Frasch mining process. Liquid sulfur-synonymous with molten sulfur. Liquid sulfur dioxide-purified sulfur dioxide compressed to the liquid phase. Molten sulfur-crude sulfur in the molten state. Prilled sulfur-solid crude sulfur in the form of pellets produced by cooling molten sulfur in air or water. Recovered sulfur-elemental sulfur produced from combined sulfur sources (including byproduct hydrogen sulfide, but sometimes referring only to sulfur from fossil fuels) by any method. Slated sulfur-solid crude sulfur in the form of slate-like lumps, produced by allowing molten sulfur to solidify on a moving belt. Specialty sulfur-prepared or refined grades of elemental sulfur that include amorphous, colloidal, flowers, precipitated, wettable, flour, and paste sulfur. One of the most dramatic innovations in the materials handling industry has been the development of stacker cranes and automated material handling systems. The stacker crane with its many capabilities and the development of reliable industrial automation controls have combined to produce dramatic achievements in an area once characterized by inefficiency lack of management attention, and capital investment. In many areas of application however, stacker cranes and high rise storage systems have been designed and installed with insufficient thought given to their integration into the overall operations of the plant or distribution facility. This paper will look at some new and interesting breakthroughs in the integration of stacker cranes and high rise storage systems into the total manufacturing plant system. In this paper we will refer to both bridge type stacker cranes and aisle stackers. The bridge type stacker crane was developed first and was initially developed with forks or other handling devices hoisted up and down a rigid or telescopic mast. This mast system was suspended from a trolley mounted on an overhead crane bridge. Today, the primary application of the bridge type stacker is in warehousing systems for handling basic metal products such as coils, bars, sheets and plates. There is no question that the bridge type stacker has achieved notable results in storage and handling of these commodities. However, a new area for stacker crane application has been developing which in many cases over-shadows the accomplishments in the storage area. This is the application of the bridge stacker as an integral part of the manufacturing processes, or in other terms the production applications of stacker cranes. The stacker crane has a number of attributes which makes these applications very important. First, the crane bridge provides the stable platform for the mounting of machinery which can accommodate the hoisting and lateral movement of large capacity loads. Today stacker cranes are being built with capacities of up to 30 - 40 tons. The bridge cranes can easily accomplish accommodation Of these large tonnages. Secondly, the mast system provides a stable platform for the mounting of a wide variety of manipulating devices which can be used for the placement of material into manufacturing processes, the extraction of this material from these processes, and movement to other points in the process area. These attributes combined with excellent operator control and safety have led to development of the stacker crane as a production tool.

Mineral carbonation is the reaction of carbon dioxide with mineral silicates to form solid, carbonate compounds. The carbonate ion holds carbon in a low energy state – lower than in carbon dioxide. Thus the reaction of carbon dioxide to produce mineral carbonates captures the carbon in a stable, solid form. The University of Utah is investigating the carbonation of silicate minerals by mechanochemical processing, which has the potential of being much less expensive than other methods. Tests to date have shown that a marked change takes place in the lizardite variety of serpentine after 15 to 20 minutes of intense grinding in the presence of gaseous CO2. Further testing is in progress.

Today many small diameter tunnels are being constructed in Metropolitan areas and towns as transmission holes for utilities such as water, electricity, natural gas and sewage, to name a few. These tunnels function as utilities beneath the streets, highways, railways, and other structures where open-cut techniques are impractical for any one of a number of reasons. Many such bores range in diameter from 15 to 72 inches and in lengths from 100 to 500 feet. Auger drills with auger type heads have long been used to bore these "road crossings" as they are usually termed; however, many such crossings must be bored in rock with rock-boring heads. Rock with a compressive strength of 15,000 p.s.i. and higher seems to present the greatest challenge for the contractor. These rocks include most igneous and metamorphic rocks and some sedimentary rocks. In general, this grasps most granites, basalts, gneisses, slates, schists, quartzites, limestones, and cherts. In the past ten years boring machines have been developed and used to excavate road crossings through hard rock. Many crossings have been successfully excavated using these machines, and the degree of success has increased substantially in the last few years. A variety of machines have been built and manufactured to bore most rock in a range of diameters up to 72 inches. The machines vary in capabilities, size ranges, and designs but all perform the same basic task and function of boring horizontally. Incidently, here the term horizontal implies horizontal or within five degrees of horizontal. In compliance with the current Russian environmental legis­lation, possible impact of industrial activities on the environment is restricted by acceptable limiting values (maximal allowable concentrations - MAC) of individual chemical substances in the natural environment - water, atmospheric air and soils. These norms have federal status and are valid for the whole territory of Russia. Disposal of the substances, for which no MAC is estab­lished, is forbidden by the law. Many gold mining companies use cyanide in precious metal recovery. This paper overviews the Russian experience in pro­tection of natural water reservoirs from technogenic impact of cyanic technologies. Major toxic compounds, contained in liquid and solid rejects from hydrometallurgical treatment of gold ore using cyanidation, are cyanides (CN), thiocyanates (SCN) and cyanide metal com­plexes. Unlike western classification of various cyanide types, in Russia any inorganic cyanide compounds (simple and in com­plexes with metals), with the exception of iron cyanide com­plexes, are considered toxic and the acceptable limiting value is established for them. MAC is 0.05 mg/I for fish reservoirs and 0.1 mg/I for drinking water. For iron cyanide complexes MAC is 0.15 mg/I for fish reservoirs and 0.25 mg/I for drinking water. Russian norms for thiocyanates are practically as rigid - the acceptable limiting value for them in fish reservoirs is at the level of 0.07mg/l (0.15 mg/I for potassium thiocyanate) and for drinking water - O. lmg/1. Norms for metals are established on the basis of total content regardless of the form in which they are present in water - as cations or complex ions. It should be noted, that in case several toxic compounds of the same limiting value (for cyanides, thiocyanates and base metals the limiting value is toxicological) are present in water. Their allowable concentra­tion is calculated as the sum of actual concentration of each com­pound, divided by the corresponding acceptable limiting value, with the result not to exceed one (compounding effect). Differences in cyanide classification and the necessity to include thiocyanates dictate different analytical methods. This, in a number of cases, results in certain discrepancies in analytical results. Until recently chlorination was used as a basic process of detox­ification of wastewaters. Calcium hypochlorite powder or hypochlorite pulp, prepared of lime milk and chlorine shipped to the plant, were used as a reagent. Chlorination is an efficient method: it allows to completely destroy plain and complex cyanide, in addition to iron complexes, and thiocyanates. A good example of high efficiency chlorination can be found at the Mnogovershinniy mill near the Okhotsk Sea located in the salmon spawning area, for which we designed an automated chlorination plant for tailings dam. Since plant start-up ten years ago, the required concentrations of cyanides and thiocyanates have been kept at the MAC level required by environmental regulatory agen­cies and no harmful affects on ichthyofauna has been reported. One major drawback of chlorination is high cost of the major reagent, as well as secondary contamination of detoxified waters by chlorides. Secondary contamination by chlorides becomes obvious in the course of detoxification of wastewaters of com­plex composition, which require increased reagent consumption. Recent changes in economic conditions in Russia caused the necessity to direct efforts to reduce the costs of precious metals recovery, and in particular, wastewater treatment. We have con­ducted certain work in this direction and obtained positive results. We hope that our experience described below will be of interest to other specialists particularly taking into account the current low gold prices.

During the last 30 years, a dramatic increase in the supply of byproduct sulfur substantially reduced the share of the market held by Frasch-mined (non-by-product) sulfur in North America. Even though Canadian sulfur production is not discretionary, the geographic remoteness from the large US markets and the high transportation costs associated with delivering sulfur to those markets has meant that Canadian producers act like discretionary producers in many important ways. They have effectively replaced the US Frasch producers as the cost-marginal sulfur source to large US markets. Implications of this change in market structure include more volatile sulfur prices and longer sulfur price recessions.

BACKGROUND Gold Fields Mining Corporation started their Chimney Creek operation in late 1987. The dump leaching operations commenced in October and the mill startup took place during the last half of November. The milling process at Chimney Creek is almost a conventional CIP plant with the major exception being the installation of a second thickener as a washing stage prior to CIP12 ' A simplified flow sheet is shown in FIGURE 1. Most of the gold in the mill is liberated by grinding in cyanide. After grinding in a conventional SAGball sill circuit, the cyclone overflow reports to the thickeners. The thickener overflow from the first thickener is pumped through 5 stages of carbon columns for gold adsorption. Slurry from the thickener underflow is leached, washed, re-thickened and pumped to CIP. After approximately 6 hours of retention time in CIP, the slurry is pumped to tailings for final deposition. The carbon from CIP is transferred to the third stage of carbon adsorption and then advanced as normal through the columns and strip circuit. Loaded carbon is stripped at approximately 1500C (3000 F) and 55 kPa (80 psi). After 4-5 hours of stripping, the grade of four tons of carbon is reduced from 5,140-6,860 g/t (150¬200 oz/ton) to typically 17 g/t (0.5 oz/ton). Zinc precipitation is used to recover the gold from the pregnant solution. After a water wash, the stripped carbon is transferred to acid wash or to the kiln feed tank for reactivation. All strip lots are acid washed in 3.0% HC1 and all stripped carbon passes through the kiln for thermal reactivation. Then the carbon is quenched, sized and stored in tanks or bins for transferral to CIP or to the carbon columns. Loaded carbon from the dump leach circuit is treated in a circuit consisting of five carbon columns which are parallel to the mill circuit. No distinction is made between the mill or dump leach carbon once the gold has been stripped from them. CARBON FINES HANDLING Once the carbon has been transferred from the carbon columns, every effort is made to minimize carbon attrition and to recover the carbon fines that have been generated in the process. Substantial progress has been made over the last ten years in the development of uniform national and international standards covering the definition, estimation and public reporting of mineral resources and mineral reserves. Agreement between the major participating countries has been reached, which include the requirement that a Competent Person prepares and approves publication of mineral resources and reserves. Most national regulatory organizations have accepted the new standards and have included them in the rules that must be followed by mining companies operating under their jurisdiction. These developments are the result of a concerted effort on the part of professional societies, national regulatory agencies, international organizations, and many dedicated individuals. The historical development of these standards is summarized in this paper. Accepted definitions of mineral resources and mineral reserves are discussed, as well as the definition and role of the Competent Person. Additional effort is needed before the international standards are fully understood, accepted and followed by mining companies, regulatory agencies, the investment community and the general public. Steps being taken toward development of a Mineral Reserves International Reporting Code Template (International Template) that will be available for all countries to use in deriving their specific country reporting codes, are outlined

In the past decade, many hardrock surface miners have revegetated dumps and tailings ponds to allow those waste disposal areas to blend more easily with the surrounding landscapes. Efforts have also been made to more creatively use the flat land resulting from the disposal of overburden and tailings. However, the mines which serve the best post-mining land uses are those that have been preplanned to incorporate such end uses. To more fully explore such a philosophy, interdisciplinary team from The University of Arizona conducted a study during 1974 and 1975 of six open pit copper mines in the Santa Cruz River Basin south of Tucson, Arizona for the purpose of investigating both interim and end-use possibilities for mine waste disposal areas. Among other reasons for the study, it was felt that alternatives for such waste areas would be more socially acceptable than barren dumps or tailings ponds. The team, known as the Mines Project Group, consisted of architects, engineers, and hydrologists. As it would have been economically infeasible to move the existing waste rock dumps or tailings ponds, preplanning was limited to the disposal of waste generated after the inception of the project. To better present their concepts, architecture professors Kenneth Clark and Fred Matter constructed a large-scale cardboard relief model of the mines and the surrounding Santa Cruz River Valley (1). The model was built at a scale of 1:12 000 (1 in = 1000 ft) with 30.48 m (100 ft) contour intervals and covered an area of 40.23 km by 32.18 km (25 miles by 20 miles) in scaled area. The mines being studied were cut into the model, but the proposed waste dumps and tailings ponds were built separately so different disposal configurations could be evaluated.

What is the primary function of an impact assessment? Many people at the International Association of Impact Assessment?s (IAIA) annual conference said that it is time to return to the fundamentals and consider the underlying drivers of impact assessments ? human health, safety and security. This fall, managers struggling with those fundamentals will receive extra support when a new course focusing on health and socially responsible security is launched online and in British Columbia, Canada, home to many of the world?s junior miners. Now in its 33rd year, the IAIA conference recently held in Calgary, Canada, typically brings together a range of professionals who work in the impact assessment field, including academics, as well as people conducting applied disciplines, such as social and environmental performance management. It is a chance for people grappling with how to assess impacts from projects (for example, dams, mining and other extractive projects), to compare notes and to talk about developments in how to measure, track and report on them. The comments about returning to fundamentals rose as participants talked about the ongoing and increasingly recognized divergence between three main impact assessment streams: environmental, social and health (EIA, SIA and HIA, respectively). Discussions in sessions and in the corridors included calls for streamlining, for integration, for improvement and sharing of practice ? particularly in the HIA stream, where those deeply engaged in the health discipline questioned how HIAs and their intended outcome of protecting human health can be better integrated into the EIAs or SIAs that dominate the impact assessment realm. EIAs and SIAs have become the main tool, particularly from a permitting perspective for large-scale mines, but seem to leave projects with little real information about what they need to do. Human health is not the only concern re-emerging. Although not reflected at the conference, there appears to be an emerging understanding of the need to link the determinants of health with socially responsible security practices. Companies conducting independent social performance assessments for international financial institutions based on the International Finance Corporation?s Environmental and Social Performance Standards increasingly wrestle with both community health and security issues as extractive companies encounter challenging social environments around the world. The Porgera gold district, like many other large gold deposits, has a long history of awareness, but only in the last five years has a geologic understanding of the district permitted the discovery of economically attractive gold reserves. The following sequence of events highlights the various significant steps in the evolution of the discovery process. The history of the district goes back about 50 years, and for several decades it was known only for its placer gold. Gradually, as gold became a more interesting metal, more and more attention was centered on the district. The sequence of events does not overstate the problems caused by isolation and climate, but the reader can imagine the difficulties inherent in such an area.

INTRODUCTION The Alimak method of raising (Fig. 1) was intro¬duced in 1957. Because of its flexibility, economy, and speed, it soon became the most used system of raising in the world. With the same unit, raises of various areas, inclinations, and lengths can be driven. Air-motor¬-driven raise climbers normally are used in mines with short raises (Fig. 2). For longer raises electric or diesel-¬hydraulic drives are used. The Alimak raise climber is designed entirely in ac¬cordance with the instructions of the Swedish Board of Industrial Safety (Arbetarskyddsstyrelsen). There are good margins of safety concerning the breaking strength of the material and the raise climber comprises safety devices and features that practically eliminate the risks of accidents. The drive gear of air-driven climbers is equipped with an air-operated brake which is automatically activated when air for the motors is shut off. There is a safety device which activates automatically at overspeed and a speed-regulated brake for descent by gravity, by which the raise climber can be taken down to the bottom of the raise in case of cutoff of the air supply. The raise climber climbs along a pin rack welded to a guide rail which also comprises pipes for air and water. The guide. rail can be extended by using 1- or 2-m (3.2¬or 6.4-ft) sections as the driving progresses. Each guide rail section is bolted to the rock wall by special expan¬sion bolts of Alimak design. Men ride up to the face in the cage, traveling com¬fortably and easily while material is transported on the platform. There is no dangerous climbing up ladders. The men are well protected during ascent and arrive in good condition at the face. The greatest advantages of raise climber systems are flexibility and versatility. Research objectives included 1) determine relationships if any between spectral response of soil and soil textural groups, Unified Soil Classification subgroups and selected landforms and 2) develop computer assisted techniques for engineering soils mapping of remotely sensed data. The sire in northeastern Kansas, 1.6 Km by 43 Km (1.0 mi by 27 mi), contained glacial and alluvial soils. Multispectral scanner data (0.40 to 1.80 pm) collected at 915 meters altitude (3,000 feet) were analyzed using two distinct computer techniques: the nonsupervised approach involving delineation of soil training areas directly by computer and the supervised approach entailing training area selection manually by the researcher. Computer classification of surface materials follows both methods. Non supervised analysis results failed to show a consistant relation- ship between landform type and soil spectral class. Landforms correlating well displayed either unusually bright or unusually dark spectral signatures. Supervised analysis results showed a strong relationship between soil texture and soil spectral class. A moderately strong tie was shown between engineering soils groups (ML, CL, CH and OH) and their respective spectral classes, and a weak association between landform type and soil spectral class. An analysis procedure for engineering soils mapping by computer of remotely sensed data was developed. 1. Locate cultural features by visual examination of imagery. 2. Produce generalized bare soil-vegetation- water map using nonsupervised technique. 3. Outline significant soil fields for computer training using supervised approach. 4. Computer-classify entire area based on these soil fields.

In-situ uranium mining is a relatively new and innovative method utilized for the commercial extraction of uranium. As with any mining method, however, significant environmental concerns will be evident and must be addressed in a rational and far-sighted manner. Experience has shown that radiological and non-radiological environmental problems may not manifest themselves until after the in-situ methodology has become established and matured to some degree. It is important, therefore, to recognize potential environmental concerns and incorporate them into an environmental program that spans the premining, mining, and post-mining phases of an in-situ operation.

Recent EPRI research on utilities? likely strategies to reduce sulfur emissions differs sharply from policy analyses showing all- switching or all-scrubbing choices. Energy Ventures Analysis, with Stearns-Catalytic and A. T. Kearney, estimated sulfur-removal costs for scrubbing or switching at virtually all affected plants in the 31 Eastern States. Cost tradeoffs occur between $30 and $40-plus per ton FOB mine in Central Appalachia ($33-44-plus per tonne). 1/2 to 3/4 of total sulfur reductions comes from scrubbing, whose costs act as a cap on low-sulfur coal prices. In a severe environmental scenario, low- sulfur coal demand evaporates, replaced by very low-sulfur (0.7%) coal demand. Additional findings and implications of EPRI coal supply and market studies will be reviewed.
