There has been a phenomenal increase in production of coal from opencast mines in India. At the same time environmental problems caused by mining are receiving greater atttention. Deterioration in ambient air quality due to increased concentration of suspended particulate matter (SPM) in and around an opencast project is a major problem. Some measured values of SPM level around opencast mines in diff coalfields show that in many cases the TLV of 500 ug/m^3 is exceeded. The impact of dust emission from a mining project on surrounding areas are estimated by using computer models for air pollution dispersal but such treatment suffers from errors in predicting the dust load and failure to take into account the terraced nature of the opencast mine site. The haul roads have been identified as the most prolific source of dust and some recent trials on haul road dust consolidation in Indian mines are mentioned in the paper. Statistics regarding pneumoconiosis cases in Indian coal mines for the last decade are presented to show an increase in reported cases and a gist of the recently amended regulations on the subject of precaution against dust is mentioned.

The choice of equipment to be applied to a given installation by the Application Engineer begins with the data as presented to him by the user. This point in the relationship establishes a communication link, which will decide whether or not the correct piece of Overhead Equipment is applied at the most economic advantage to the user. The role played by the user cannot be minimized. No one knows better than he, just what work he expects to accomplish with this piece of machinery. However, all too often, he oversimplifies the requirements, and along with minimal crane and building parameters, merely refers to one of the following crane classifications as defined by The Crane Manufacturing Association of America, as shown in Figures 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7. This approach places the ultimate user in an unfair position, since he has then assumed the status of the machinery designer and must, therefore, assume the responsibility of the success or failure of the operation of that piece of machinery. If the user selects a Class "C" crane for his job requirement, when actually a Class "B" crane can adequately handle the work load, he is not offering the most economic solution to his company and added little to the cranes service capabilities.

There are no particular nor unique features of iron mining that are not shared in some degree by all mining ventures everywhere. There are, however, at least three problems that have acquired a special emphasis from a unique cause. That cause is the embarrassment of riches under which the industry is suffering. The most obvious' feature of iron mining today is the copious abundance of usable ore and its almost universal distribution over the face of the earth. By the term "usable ore" is meant ore that is amenable to reduction by the usual and conventional processes. Amidst this plenty, three problems become acutely emphasized: 1. The geographic location that will provide a mine with the best market opportunity. 2. The size of the orebody that will be required to' return the preproduction investment. 3. The geometry and configuration of the orebody that will permit quality control measures to be effectively executed.

Cathodic protection using impressed current was employed to reduce mill wall wear during ball milling. Wear rates were determined from weight-loss measurements made on four 1-in.-diam mild steel coupons that were installed flush with the interior surface of the mill wall. Grinding tests were conducted on quartz, pyrite and quartz-pyrite mixtures at pH levels of 4.6, 7.1 and 9.2. Cathodic protection was shown to reduce mill wear by 30% to 60%. An examination of the coupon surfaces using scanning electron microscopy showed that cathodic protection greatly reduced pitting corrosion. The presence of a sulfide mineral, such as pyrite, was found to increase the wear rate significantly, possibly due to galvanic interactions. It was also found that the wear rate is significantly higher than the sum of abrasive wear and the corrosive wear, due to a synergistic effect.

Mine equipment fires remain as one of the most concerning safety issues in the mining industry, and most equipment fires were caused by hot surface ignitions. Detailed experimental investigations were conducted at the NIOSH Pittsburgh Mining Research Division on hot surface ignition of liquid fuels under ventilation in a mining environment. Three types of metal surface materials (stainless steel, cast iron, carbon steel), three types of liquids (diesel fuel, hydraulic fluid, engine oil), four air ventilation speeds (0, 0.5, 1.5, 3 m/s) were used to study the hot surface ignition probability under these conditions. Visual observation and thermocouples attached on the metal surface were used to indicate the hot surface ignition from the measured temperatures. Results show that the type of metal has a noticeable effect on the hot surface ignition, while ventilation speed has a mixed influence on ignition. Different types of liquid fuels also show different ranges of ignition temperature. Results from this work can be used to help understand equipment mine fires and develop mitigation strategies.

Viewed abstractly, a mill may be defined as a mineral processing facility located somewhere between the mine and the tailings storage area, Just how mining operations and the demands of tailings storage affect mill design is, the subject of this paper. At the outset, it will be readily acknowledged that no two installations can, or ever will be the same. At one extreme is the bucket line dredge where the distance between the ?mine? and the tailings area is measured in terms of tens of feet. At the other extreme, the large open pit copper mines are frequently spread across twenty, miles or so of countryside with the ore moving to the mill, as exemplified by the operations at Bingham Canyon, Ray, or Ruth - the "upstream" counterparts of Garfield, Hayden and McGill. In each of these cases, mill location was largely determined by requirements for tailings storage and/or water supply.

Bio-treatment of uranium contaminated soils from Fernald using the bacterium Thiobacillus ferrooxidans was investigated. The experimental results showed that extraction of uranium upto 99 percent from soils were obtained with 10 percent pulp density suspension and with addition of iron (3000 mg/l) after bio-remediation time of seven days. Application of the results to industrial practices is discussed.

Over the next two decades there will be significant trade and development opportunities in China for mining, engineering, equipment, and construction companies interested in becoming part of the development of China's chemical and fertilizer industries. At last count, China's phosphate ore reserves of 11.8 Gt (13 billion st), ranked fourth in the world behind the US, the USSR, and Sahara-Morocco. However, a recent statement by the head of the Ministry of Geology and Minerals, Sun Daguang, claims that with increased prospecting in the last few years, China's phosphate reserves now rank first in the world. Whatever the actual size of its known and potential reserves, China's present phosphate processing capabilities fall far short of demand, while the substantial progress that has been made in this area points out the severity of the problems that still remain. Since 1949 China has developed 181 mines and increased its phosphate concentrate production from 10 kt (11,000 st) to 10.86 Mt (11.97 million st). By the 1980s, China was the third largest chemical fertilizer producer in the world-although this claim is slightly misleading as China's nitrogen/phosphate potassium ratios are far from average world ratios and even further from US standards. According to the Sixth Five Year Plan promulgated in 1982, the country's development plans emphasize the expansion and upgrading of key energy and industrial sectors, including that of fertilizer production-specifically phosphate and potash. Within the framework of the plan, the Ministry of Chemical Industry's development priorities are to: • Increase potash production by 150% to 50 kt (55,115 st). • Raise phosphate fertilizer production 21.2% to 2.8 Mt (3.1 million st), 46 kt (50,705 st) of which will come from new projects constructed and completed within the Sixth Five Year Plan, with projected new production of phosphate concentrate and complex fertilizer in the next decades totaling 500 kt (551,146 st). • Commence work to increase phosphate ore production by 8.33 Mt (9.18 million st). Facilities for 2.43 Mt (2.68 million st) will be completed and come on stream by 1985. • Commence work to increase iron pyrite ore production by 3.69 Mt (4.07 million st), facilities for 2.9 Mt (3.2 million st) will be completed and come on stream by 1985. • Verify 600 Mt (661 million st) of new phosphate ore reserves. Since the promulgation of the Sixth Five Year Plan, Chinese authorities have announced that 70 key construction projects will receive top priority in the implementation of the plan. These projects include five in the chemical industry area, including the construction of four fertilizer plants in Urumqi (Xinjiang), Zhenhai (Zhejiang), Beijing, and Lucheng (Shanxi), and a pyrite mine in Yunfu (Guangdong). In addition, by 1985 the state will expand or construct three major phosphate mines: Wangji in Hubei, Kaiyang in Guizhou, and Kunyang in Yunnan. Fertilizer Ratios In 1982, China's fertilizer production was slightly higher than 12 Mt (13.2 million st) and consisted of 80% nitrogen, 19% phosphate, and 0.19% potassium. By 1985, state officials project that fertilizer production will reach 13.4 Mt (14.8 million st) and consist of 78.4% nitrogen (10.5 Mt or 11.6 million st), 21.2% phosphate (2.8 Mt or 3 million st), and 0.39% potassium (52.3 kt or 57,605 st). To attain the world average using the country's 1985 projected production level for nitrogen, China will have to double its 1985 phosphate production to 5.76 Mt (6.35 million st) and increase its 1985 potassium production almost 80 times to 4.1 Mt (4.5 million st). These numbers demonstrate the seriousness of the fertilizer production problem in China today and the long-term nature of the problem's solution. Development Examples Yunnan is the third largest phosphate-rich province in China with verified deposits of 1.9 Gt (2.1 billion st). Despite this abundance, the province only mines around 3 Mt (3.3 million st) of phosphate rock annually. In June of this year, Yunnan announced its intention to initiate 39 development projects within the next two and a half years, requiring an estimated $200 million worth of foreign investment. "In this study, the TBM Resistivity Prediction (TRP) system is developed for predicting the location, thickness, permittivity ratio and electrical conductivity of anomalous zones ahead of tunnel face using the measured resistivity of the ground. The applicability of the developed system was verified by performing field tests at a construction site in which an EPB-shield TBM is used for tunnelling work. In the first field test, it was found that the rock around the tunnel face had the same resistivity and permittivity with the rock ahead of the tunnel face indicating no anomaly ahead of the tunnel face. In the second test, a stronger zone 5-m thick was predicted ahead of the tunnel face based on lower permittivity than that of the rock around the tunnel face. The ground condition assessed by the newly developed TRP system matched well with that either predicted from geophysical exploration or directly obtained from drilling boreholes or from daily observed muck conditions. INTRODUCTION During tunneling work, the emergence of unpredicted zones of relatively weaker or stronger ground can lead to delays in construction work or an increase of construction cost. Predicting anomalous zones ahead of tunnel face in advance can thus prevent time and economic loss. For these reasons, various methods to predict the ground condition ahead of the tunnel face have been studied and developed. Prediction methods using various kinds of equipment include tunnel seismic prediction, ground penetrating radar, electromagnetic surveys based on electronic antennas, and electrical resistivity surveys conducted by analyzing electric currents in the ground ahead of the tunnel face (Ryu et al. 2008). However, most of the prediction methods are only applicable to conventional tunneling job sites, which feature free access to the tunnel face. In mechanized tunneling projects, accessibility to the tunnel face is very limited because the tunnel face is occupied by the TBM."

The planning, installation and commissioning of the first scheme of controlled recirculation of air flow in a section of coal mine in Great Britain is described, together with the proposals for a second installation. The work updates a previous paper (Robinson and Harrison, l986) on the subject. The special problems of ventilating the increasingly distant faces of the undersea mines in the North East Area of the British Coal Corporation are discussed and the alternative solutions stated. The advantages of using a system of controlled recirculation of air are proposed together with the safety features considered necessary. Design and installation details of the recirculation fans and a new booster fan are described.

During the last 15 years, the North American Mining Industry has experienced increasing usage of cast high chromium white iron grinding media in wet grinding applications. First introduced into the cement industry (klinker grinding) where wear rate reductions of four or five times have been realized compared to steel balls, this same grinding media serve the iron, copper, and phosphate markets by resisting not only impacts and abrasion, but also corrosion which occurs in wet grinding. In these markets, single mills containing 250,000 kg of grinding balls are not un-common and hence the economic potential with respect to lower wear rates can be significant. Add to reduced wear rate the increased production efficiency that is possible and it is readily understood why much of the mining industry uses cast high chromium grinding media. Metallurgically, the alloys used consist of a martensitic matrix containing hard M7C3 eutectic carbides. Carbon (2.0 to 3.5%) and chromium (12 to 277.) are characteristically used to arrive at the desired properties.

A shield on a tunneling machine has two basic purposes. Firstly to provide temporary support in unstable ground, maintaining the integrity of the bore and protecting the operators, and secondly, in conjunction with other sealing devices, to prevent the ingress of water. In any specific tunnel, unstable ground and water may or may not occur together. Further, there are a number of different ground behaviors that may be termed unstable and these must be defined in order to determine the most suitable type of machine. Beyond the shield itself, the cutterhead and the mucking system design are critical in successfully traversing difficult geology. In any but the shortest tunnels, variations in the geological conditions and the requirement of an acceptable advance rate can impose increasing degrees of sophistication in the machine design. In this paper we will review current designs of shielded type machines and their application, and discuss new developments which blend hard and soft ground tunneling technology. We will also indicate that in some conditions, although first impressions seem to favor a shielded machine, in fact an open gripper TBM may be the wisest choice.

Salt from Great Salt Lake was probably used by the Native Americans prior to the Jim Bridger Expedition to the lake in 1824-25, and was used by the region's early explorers and trappers after that time. From the arrival of the Mormon pioneers in 1847, salt has been produced from Great Salt Lake, starting first with the collection of crude salt from along its shores, and later by boiling down the lake's brine to obtain crystalline salt. Since these early beginnings, salt production from the lake has become a substantial commercial enterprise. Since the early 1960s, research and development have led to the economic production of potassium sulfate, magnesium metal, chlorine gas, magnesium chloride products, and nutritional supplements. Many of the salt-production techniques and equipment that were developed prior to 1964 are still being used today. Sodium sulfate has been produced, but is no longer marketed. Morton Salt, Cargill Salt, and IMC Salt currently extract sodium chloride, which is precipitated during the early stages of evaporation when the brine concentration reaches saturation, or about 26 to 27 percent total dissolved solids. Magnesium Corporation of America produces magnesium metal and chlorine gas, and IMC Kalium Ogden Corporation produces potassium sulfate, as well as magnesium chloride brine and flake products. These salt, gaseous, and metallic products are processed from the sodium-chloride-saturated, high-magnesium-chloride brines, and from the potassium and magnesium salts that are precipitated from the lake brine after it has been further concentrated. One obstacle to salt production is the fluctuating level of Great Salt Lake. In 1983, the lake level began a dramatic rise from an elevation of 4,200 feet (1,280.16 m) to its historic high of 4.211.85 feet (1,283.77 m) in 1986-87 (uncorrected USGS provisional lake-level records). The State of Utah employed flood-control measures, including breaching the Southern Pacific Railroad causeway in 1984, and pumping lake water to a shallow basin west of the lake in 1987. During the high-water years, the lake's mineral-extraction industries faced many challenges including the need to raise dikes to prevent flooding of facilities, broken dikes which resulted in the inundation of solar ponds, and dealing with the lake's greatly reduced brine salinities which resulted in lower annual salt and concentrated-brine production. The years following the record-high lake levels have been a time of adaptation, innovation, and change for Great Salt Lake industries. After its solar ponds were flooded in 1986, AMAX, Inc. built a new solar-pond complex near Knolls, and used the concentrated brines from the West Pond, generated by the State's West Desert Pumping Project. Great Salt Lake Minerals built a 21-mile-long (33.8 km) open, underwater canal, called the Behrens Trench, to convey concentrated brines from a new, remote solar pond on the west side of the lake to the east side of the lake, to help increase its production of sulfate-of-potash. There were also numerous changes in corporate ownership and production-facility locations.

With mine activity dating back to 1792, the Lehigh Valley, about 80 km (50 miles) northeast of the historic Allentown/Bethlehem steel mills and about 160 km (100 miles) northeast of Philadelphia, PA, defined early-day coal mining. Coal mining began just nine years after the end of America?s Revolutionary War. The high-carbon, clean-burning anthracite coal that was hand-dug from the Pennsylvania hills fueled the steam engines that powered the Industrial Revolution, helping build early steam ships and even the first automobiles. Around 1910, at the peak of the U.S.?s early mining effort, there were more than 250,000 men working underground ? 10,000 of them in the Lehigh Valley.

A detailed kinetic study of the flotation installation at the Metcalf Concentrator revealed a rougher flotation circuit operating under less than optimal conditions. Based on these results, a project was initiated to approximately double the rougher flotation capacity by increasing the installed volume from 780 cubic meters to 1,560 cubic meters. This project, which was completed in early 1991, replaced the existing cells with larger capacity cells. A comprehensive analysis of results demonstrates significant metallurgical benefits. INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND The Metcalf Concentrator is located in Morenci, Arizona and is part of Phelps Dodge Morenci, Incorporated. Sumitomo Metal Mining of Arizona is a minority partner in the operation with 15% interest. The Metcalf Concentrator is the newer and smaller concentrator and operates in conjunction with the Morenci Concentrator. Operating capacity at Metcalf is currently 48,000 TPD of ore on a 365 days per year basis. The Metcalf Concentrator was commissioned in 1974 at a 30,000 TPD operating rate for the purpose of treating ores originating in the Metcalf Mine. The mine takes its name from the former town of Metcalf which was named for Robert Metcalf who was credited with discovery of the mineral district. The predominant ore mineral is chalcocite which occurs as a secondary enrichment closely associated with iron pyrite. The host rock is largely granodiorite and quartz monzonite. The original rougher flotation circuit consisted of a total of six rows of Wemco 8.5 cu. meter (300 cu.ft.) flotation machines treating pulp from the two grinding sections (Sections A and B). Each row was configured in a 4-4-4 arrangement. Shortly after startup the throughput rate was increased significantly without sustaining a recovery loss. This increase was achieved by raising the target value for the particle size of the cyclone overflow which is the rougher flotation feed. Shortly thereafter, the capacity of the pump and cyclone began to restrict further increases in throughput. After testing, two 66 cm. (26-in.) cyclones and a 12-in. X 12-in. centrifugal pump replaced the original classification equipment. As a result of these modifications, the grinding section could routinely process in excess of 42,000 TPD. Due to the increased tonnage rates, limitations in the rougher flotation circuit performance were observed. In an effort to improve the performance of rougher flotation with this higher throughput, the speed of the flotation mechanisms was increased from 230 RPM to 250 RPM. This change improved the suspension of the coarser feed and induced additional air into the pulp. It did, however, apply additional strain to the motors, shortening their life. At these elevated processing rates, it was found that the dart valves operated almost entirely at the top end of the control range and could not efficiently handle upsets from the grinding section. This was remedied by lowering the end overflow weir and allowing some of the tailings to overflow the end weir. However, in order to obtain acceptable recovery levels, the flotation pulp was maintained at a high level, adversely influencing the rougher concentrate grade.

NIOSH researchers and an industry partner conducted an investigation to study the effectiveness of ergonomic interventions in mining. The study required a significant commitment of time and resources from the cooperating site, Bridger Coal Company. This paper focuses on some of the challenges faced by the researchers and their cooperator. Challenges included the need to redesign methods of identifying and prioritizing injuries, and the need to train the workforce in ergonomics while still maintaining progress and interest in the process. The authors discuss some practical interventions implemented by Bridger Coal to date, and discuss future research implications brought about by PacifiCorp’s Generation Business Unit, who monitored the project to determine whether an employee-owned ergonomic process could be implemented throughout their operations.

The semiautogemus grinding circuit at the Utah Mines Ltd., Island Copper operation, located on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, is described. Since startup of the operation in 1971, grinding circuit throughput has been progressively increased from the initial design rate of 90 000 (99,000) to the current average 45 000 t/d (49,600 stpd) of porphyry copper ore. Key developments ad modifications in operating and maintenance practice that have contributed to this increase are reviewed.
