This paper reviews groundwater issues leading to a secondary grouting program at the Chattahoochee Tunnel that was implemented subsequent to the contact grouting program. The secondary grouting program was developed based on infiltration data, geology, and testing programs. This paper includes a brief description of the geological features encountered, as well as describing the grouting program. The success of this grouting operation has been quantified by several methods, and is presented to help others project the costs and benefits of this type of program. Review of initial results and refinements of techniques are also discussed.

Neural network methodology is used to predict mean particle size resulting from rock blast fragmentation. A blast data base developed in a previous study is used in the current study. A part of this blast data was used to train a single-hidden layer back propagation neural network model for each of the similarity groups obtained in the same previous study. Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm provided the most stable and efficient training out of the four algorithms evaluated. An extensive analysis was performed using a part of the blast data to estimate the optimum number of units for the hidden layer for each similarity group. The remaining blast data are used to validate the trained neural network models. Capability of the developed neural network models is determined by comparing predictions with measured values and predictions based on one of the most applied fragmentation prediction models appearing in the blasting literature. Prediction capability of the neural network models was found to be strong and better than the existing most applied model. Diversity of the blasts data used is one of the most important aspects of the developed models. The developed neural network models are suitable for practical use at mines.

Sustainable development has brought social, environmental and energy efficiency concerns together with management and governance of natural resources. Cement manufacturing, an energy- and natural resource-intensive industry, is adapting to meet sustainable development goals. Emission standards for cement plants and increasing energy costs have lead to changes in the use of natural resources and recycled materials. Utilizing pozzolans or supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) as mineral admixtures in blended cement or as a substitute for cement in concrete lowers energy costs and CO2 emissions. Although the western U.S. is rich in natural pozzolans, artificial products, particularly fly ash, have greater use as mineral admixtures. Pozzolans and SCMs have many beneficial properties, such as preventing alkali-silica reactivity, a common problem in the western U.S. Barriers exist for mineral admixtures in the cement and concrete industries because of past inconsistencies in quality or availability. New environmental regulations on the primary industries producing artificial mineral admixtures could adversely affect the quality and quantity of these materials in the future.

Although vegetation can be successfully established on fine taconite tailings, innovative approaches are needed to reclaim the coarse tailings used for dam construction. Through a series of cooperative projects with various government agencies and industries, EVTAC has been able to develop a unique closure plan. This plan will not only meet current reclamation standards, but also provide mitigation for a disturbed wetland and possibly create a tree plantation in the interior of the basin. By using waste products and exchanging materials, reclamation of the entire basin will be accomplised in a cost effective manner.

"The paper describes in general the objectives, goals as well as theoretical background of "METSI"-project proposal submitted to German BMBF (Federal Ministry of Education and Research). The METSI project is a starting point for technology and know-how transfer of German water management and water treatment technologies to South African Mining industry. "METSI" is Setswana, one of the eleven official languages in South Africa, and means "water". It stands also for "Management System for the Implementation of Environmentally Sound Water Supply Technologies in South African Mining Areas with Involvement of all Relevant Stakeholders". The project focuses on development, design and implementation of mathematical models that consolidate and evaluate existing data and generate substantiated projections of "water" amount and quality. METSI covers a wide range of scientific, technical, social as well as economic questions related to "water in mining"."

India bestowed with 6000km of the coastal belt, contains some of the richest and largest placer deposits with a mixture of heavy minerals like ilmenite, rutile, leucoxene, zircon, monazite, sillimanite and garnet. Each of the minerals is having economic value due to its inherent characteristics for industrial use in fields of paints, metallurgy, refractory, abrasive and so on. The reserves of titanium bearing minerals (ilmenite, leucoxene, and rutile) in the country is around 378 million tonnes. More than 90% of the titanium based minerals produced worldwide are utilised for making value added products in the pigment industries. Approximately 8 million tonnes of monazite reserves are available in the country from which several rare earth elements like cerium, neodymium, lanthanum, yttrium etc. can be extracted for use in several industries. The country contains a deposit of about 20 million tonnes of zircon, which is used in foundries, refractories, ceramics and chemicals. India has a reserve of 107 million tonnes of garnet and 131 million tonnes of sillimanite required for the abrasive and refractory industries respectively. Keeping in view the multifarious uses, the beach sand minerals are being exploited to have the economic growth of the nation. Although the process adopted for the separations are simple, the equipment involved are specially designed because of the nature of the material of construction. Starting from the spirals to magnetic separators, all equipments are manufactured outside India, which is not only costly, but the availability also takes much time for fulfilling the import formalities. Unlike open cast mining, beach sand mining is a environment friendly mining because dredging is implemented to cut and pump the loose sand through a slurry pump causing less damage to the surface topography as both mining and backfilling takes place simultaneously. Therefore all out efforts are made to explore the beach sand placer deposits in an economic manner to emerge as a leader in the global mineral industries.

This paper describes the basic requirements for the utilization of belt air to ventilate working sections at remote locations in relation to the main fans. It highlights the risks involved, potential problems, and the provisions that must be followed by mine operators for the safe use of belt air. The paper also presents a brief review of the current regulations, conveyor belting tests, atmospheric monitoring system requirements, and the experience gained by mine operators to utilize the belt entries to ventilate remote working sections or areas where mechanized equipment is being installed or removed. The paper concludes with a set of recommendations with respect to the utilization of belt air and the composition of belt material in under-ground coal mines.

The Leeville underground mine has been in operation since 2006 and currently produces 3,500 tons of ore per day with an average gold grade of 0.34 opt. The mine has a large horizontal extent of 2,500 feet by 500 feet and a vertical extent of 20 to 200 feet. Based on the characteristics of the ore bodies, a long-hole stope and cut-and-fill mining methods are used at the deposits which are divided into several mining zones. Cemented rock fill (CRF) is used as the backfill in the open stope. CRF design includes the aggregate design, the ratio of cement and fly ash design, and strengths for the long-hole stope and cut-and-fill. In the aggregate design, the particle size distribution is one of the most influential aggregate characteristics in determining how it will perform as a basic backfill material. Gradation helps determine durability, porosity, cement and water requirements, strength, and shrinkage. To cut the backfill cost, fly ash usually is added into the binder to replace some part of cement. However, adding fly ash can affect the strength of the backfill. The reasonable percentage of fly ash is also important for making a good and low cost backfill. Based on the different mining method, the different backfill with different strength is designed. A systematic quality control procedure for aggregate and backfill is followed. After four yeas application, CRF system in Leeville achieved very good results.

The Joint Water Pollution Control Plant (JWPCP), operated by the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County (the Districts), treats wastewater generated by over3 million people and processes wastewater solids generated by over 5 million people. The JWPCP Tunnel and Ocean Outfall Project, if constructed, would be one of the major marine outfall projects in the world. The new tunnel and ocean outfall system would provide relief to the existing outfall and allow inspection, maintenance, and repair of the existing tunnel and outfall system, portions of which were constructed as early as the 1930s. Geologic conditions are challenging along the alignments within the study are a being considered. Conditions include saturated alluvial soils, weak sedimentary rock, mixed face conditions, and squeezing ground conditions. Other significant challenges include the potentials for encountering up to 11 bars of water pressure, crossing seismically active faults, and encountering gassy and contaminated ground conditions. This paper discusses the details of the proposed project and the associated challenges.

After the successful breakthrough at the end of 2006 of both TBMs into the multifunctional site Faido (MFS), in the middle of 2007 the two tunnel boring machines resumed the 12 km long section between Faido and Sedrun. In the roughly a 10 month interval both approximately 465 m long tunnel boring machines were partly dismantled, pushed through the 2.5 km long MFS, rebuilt for the new larger diameter of 9.5 m and reassembled to be ready for operation. In the rebuilding phase, improvements were made to the equipment, especially as a result of experience gained from the previous 14 km long drive in the section Bodio and taking into account the latest information regarding the upcoming 14 km section Faido. Both TBM drives are currently in the rock formations of the Lucomagno gneiss, which stretch over a section of 3.5 km from the MFS Faido to the predicted Piora Syncline. This section is divided into two fold axes of the Chièra Synform, where the Lucomagno gneiss pass from a sub-horizontal into vertical bedding. The drives, with current rock overburdens exceeding 1,500 m and, as known from the excavation phase of the MFS, in part highly disturbed rock formations, are characterized by the locally intense rock squeezing conditions with large convergences in the vicinity of the driving TBM as well as backwards due to the interaction of the two drives. High expenditure for the support measures, reduced driving performances together with extensive extra work associated with deadlines and increased costs are the result. In the paper the previous experience with the TBM drives in the section Faido and the challenges still awaiting us are presented and discussed.

Potential air emission impacts to federal Class I areas from distant sources are receiving increasing scrutiny by federal land managers (FLMs). This paper provides summary results of the impact analyses conducted for FLMs and PSD permitting of a proposed expansion for a taconite processing facility. Results from air quality increment, acid deposition, mercury deposition, and visibility analyses for Class I areas located 50 to 162 km from the facility showed the project would meet the respective regulatory and guideline values for the specific analyses. During the course of the air quality analyses, potential new requirements from the FLMs’ Air Quality Related Values Workgroup (FLAG) efforts and USEPA’s Regional Haze Program were brought into the PSD discussions. The implications for these future guidelines and regulations as they may affect future expansions at other mineral processing facilities are also discussed.

INTRODUCTION A number of tunnels supported and permanently lined by steel-fiber-reinforced shotcrete (SFRS) have been built in North America in the 1980s. The material is more economical than, and technically equal or superior to, conventional shotcrete using wire mesh. The design and construction of SFRS-lined tunnels is straightforward, and only a few new design principles, laboratory tests or construction equipment modifications appear necessary in order to use this material. Modern tunnel Contractors may use cyclic drill-and-blast methods on some tunnels, with intermittent shotcreting as part of an orderly cycle. The Dry Mix method is most suitable for cyclic, intermittent, relatively small-scale shotcreting. However, modern Contractors excavating tunnels continuously using large long Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) or Roadheaders may prefer Wet Mix shotcreting on a mass production basis. In either case, the use of steel-fiber-rein¬forced shotcrete (SFRS) promotes the rapid and economical excavation of tunnels. The addition of microsilica will improve SFRS properties and reduce rebound, and is expected to become standard practice with SFRS in North America, as it now is in Scandinavia. HISTORICAL REVIEW Steel-fiber-reinforced shotcrete (SFRS) at the present time (1985) is essentially conventional shotcrete with straight or deformed steel fibers added, and in general SFRS for tunnel linings encounters the same problems that conventional shotcrete does. The SO2-ammoniacal ammonium sulfate leach liquor generated by leaching of manganese nodules, after removal of minor quantities of iron and manganese, contained copper, nickel, cobalt, zinc and (NH4)2SO4. After extraction of copper from the leach liquor with LIX 84I, stripping of ammonia from the Cu-barren raffinate was carried out followed by precipitation of metal ions from the ammonia-stripped solution as sulfides. Leaching of the sulfide precipitate was carried out with H2SO4 to obtain a leach liquor containing 0.58 kg/m3 Cu, 2.67 kg/m3 Zn, 2.00 kg/m3 Co, 24.68 kg/m3 Ni and 10.0 kg/m3 (NH4)2SO4. After extraction of copper and zinc from the sulfate leach liquor with LIX 84I and D2EHPA, respectively, the solution was left with Co and Ni. Extraction of cobalt from the Cu- and Zn-free solution was carried out with 0.1 M PC88A and stripping of the cobalt-loaded organic was carried out with the cobalt-spent electrolyte (pH 1.4). Extraction of nickel from the cobalt-free solution was carried out with 90% neutral 1M NaPC88A followed by stripping of the nickel-loaded organic with 120 kg/m3 H2SO4 solution. Extraction of metal ions increased with increasing equilibrium pH and extractant concentration. The maximum separation factors, with respect to the pH and extractant concentration variation studies, were 3796.7 and 15350.0, respectively. The extracted species for the metal ions were CoA2?3HA and NiA2?5HA.

Modern production equipment has been designed with greater productive capacity and higher reliability to meet the rigorous operating demands of the mining industry. These improvements have also made the equipment more complex and challenging to maintain. Whether these equipment enhancements contribute to more effective mining operations depends on the overall quality of maintenance. Maintenance is not a stand-alone activity. Although its quality depends primarily on maintenance, cooperation and support from other departments, coupled with the skillful guidance of mining managers, greatly influence maintenance success. Therefore, maintenance risk management must look beyond maintenance itself. Successful maintenance risk management begins with an assessment of the maintenance-related interactions of all mining departments within the mine’s stated operating strategy.

Limestone-based material is effective for reducing arsenic concentrations below the current limit of 10 parts per billion for drinking water, typically resulting in final concentrations of about 4 to 6 ppb. However, in laboratory and field testing, further reductions to the 1 ppb range are difficult to achieve with limestone unless other material such as iron is added. The removal mechanism with untreated limestone appears to be the formation of a low-solubility precipitate of hydrated calcium arsenate, in the form of arsenate-apatite. Likely reactions and thermodynamic data indicate a theoretical removal limit of about 2 to 4 ppb for arsenic using raw limestone. Limestone also can reduce concentrations of cadmium and lead below 1 ppb in water, resulting in >99% removal efficiency. Thermodynamic constraints appear to be favorable for reactions involving the formation of otavite during cadmium removal and the formation of hydrocerussite during lead removal.

??care has to be taken that the design is driven by sound geological reasoning and rigorous engineering logic rather than by the very attractive images that appear on the computer screen.??Hoek 1999 Design of a cavern is inextricably linked to the engineering geology of the site. The importance of sound geological reasoning will be illustrated by transportation projects in New York City where there are proposals for at least 11 caverns. These caverns have been the subject of advanced exploration techniques and geological interpretation but even so the raw data falls short of the sophistication of modern numerical methods. This paper will give geological explanations for the engineering characteristics of the rock in New York City which will provide guidance for practitioners when approaching cavern design in New York and elsewhere.

The US Constitution provides for regulation by the states for protecting the public's safety, health, and welfare. Hence, in the eyes of the law of all states today, this is the sole justification for registration of professional engineers. Wyoming was the first state to register professional engineers in 1907, to correct abuses of incompetent or fraudulent practices in surveying and real estate. Public safety and health are most directly affected by civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering. Other branches of engineering have a profound effect on the public welfare, including investors, and safety and health of employees. No arguments, pro or con, are valid except in relation to the registration laws of various states. Code of Ethics Few would argue the desirability of requiring conformance with a code of ethics. A major problem lies in enforcing compliance, since protecting the public demands a high standard of competence, yet assessing competence gets confused with restraint of trade. Bidding engineering work on price competition can lead to pressure to cut corners on engineering quality, and was therefore discouraged by codes of ethics. The Supreme Court, in a suit against the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE), barred any engineering society from such bidding restriction. It has, however, upheld the right of states to impose codes of acceptable practice as part of registration laws. For example, Texas Canon I reads, "The engineer's paramount professional responsibility should be the safety, health, and welfare of the general public." Anything less makes the code practically meaningless, but there are potential conflicts of interest in many engineering organizations. How can conflicts be handled? Any corporation could improve its public image by adopting a policy that each employed PE should, without fear of recrimination, record in writing over his seal any problem or flaw in any design that comes to his attention. The policy should further require that his superior provide him a written reply pointing out that the "flaw" is accepted as requiring correction or as a calculated risk, or overruled as erroneous or as a difference of opinion. Errors in calculation of judgment are inevitable. Despite this, there are limits to how much time and money should be spent to eliminate them. It is difficult, however, to see any excuse for failure to conscientiously evaluate the opinion of a PE. This may be an impossible ideal, but how else can the profession or the industry have credibility? The National Council of Engineering Examiners (NCEE) has a code of ethics one presumably subscribes to by signing an application to write a Principles and Practices examination. However, NCEE has none of the power of enforcement that is available through state boards of registration. Registration Qualifications Qualifications are set by the laws of the states. In general, they require passage of an eight-hour examination in fundamentals, preferably at graduation, and, later, one in principles and practices. The examinations are compiled and distributed by NCEE. This system provides for a high degree of uniformity and reciprocity. States set the education and experience levels (typically four years after graduation) required by those desiring to write the principles and practices examination. Examinations The principles and practices examination calls for answering eight of 20 equal weight questions; one on engineering economics, 19 on engineering. Economics may enter into engineering questions, but only provided the question is not answerable by an economist without engineering training. In preparing examinations, NCEE strives to use questions that require some judgment and can be more effectively answered by someone with four years experience beyond college. Collaboration between education providers is the key to long-term sustainability and improved quality in mining education. The mining industry is now, more than ever, an industry doing business on a global basis. Staff are recruited by global mining companies in many different countries and can find themselves deployed anywhere in the world. The mining engineer of tomorrow must be willing to take on this international challenge, and must be educated to a level where he or she has a comprehensive grounding in technical aspects of mining engineering, but also a well-founded appreciation of management, social, environmental and cultural issues which may be encountered around the world. In order to deliver such an education, academic providers must collaborate at both a national and international level. This paper provides an overview of progress that has been made in Australia through the national joint venture ? Mining Education Australia (MEA). Supported by the mining industry in Australia, through the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA), MEA has now been operational since 2007 and is seeing the development of a range of innovative courses and delivery methods, together with a high level of staff co-operation across the country. MEA has also now commenced some international teaching initiatives which are seen as a catalyst for a far greater degree of international collaboration in the future. Such activity is not only to the benefit of the students who are taught by experts from around the world, but it also ensures that individual university programs remain viable in terms of staffing numbers and financial performance. The paper also presents some statistics on recent upward trends in mining engineering student numbers from around the world, in response to the global shortage of mining engineers.

Introduction Examining the short- and long-term job prospects for engineers in the coal industry might include looking at coal tonnage projections, future export markets, federal regulations, and the decrease in overall graduates. But coal is the US most competitive basic industry. As such, why not go back to basics? That is, there are three basic challenges that need to be faced by students, faculty, and members of the coal industry. These challenges are counseling, career placement, and professionalism. Counseling Counseling can include elementary, high school, and college students, as well as individuals already employed. But what happens to students after they have selected a course of study at a particular university? As shown in Fig. 1, only 87,000, or 7.25% of our graduates have technical degrees. Generally, there is a strong market projected for these engineering graduates. However, many students who have majored in other nontechnical curriculums, have to scramble for jobs. This says something about our ability to make students aware of where the real job opportunities are. As a student spends four or five years pursuing a degree, he or she is looking for professional guidance. The student has the right to expect "real world" counseling - counseling that is not "the way it should be" but "the way it is." The influence of faculty members is significant. They should take this long opportunity to tell students not what they want to hear or what the problem's of academia or the industry are, but what the real job market is all about. If faculty do not use this opportunity, they in-advertently-through omission - mislead their students. Once a student graduates and is a working alumnus, faculty should take advantage of their relationship with the student and continue to stimulate conversation leading to a two-way exchange of ideas and information. Faculty should also encourage and solicit financial support for their mining departments from their alumni. These monies, in many cases, will be matched dollar for dollar or more, depending on the company the alumnus works for. In the private sector, the responsibility is to communicate with faculty and students. Alumni can be effective by participating in this two-way dialogue with their professors at meetings, technical seminars, and conventions. In many cases, alumni will employ summer or co-op students in their organizations. While getting to know these students, industry members should level with them on where the true opportunities are and what it takes to be successful. Push backs used in the production planning of open pit mines play an integral role in generating annual cash flow. Although several algorithms for push back designs have been proposed, none have studied the optimum number of push backs. In this paper, different algorithms have been implemented for the push back design of a cross section of a copper deposit and the results discussed. Moreover, the optimum number of push backs has been determined using analytical and multiple attribute decision making (MADM) methods based on minimizing the risk associated with grade uncertainty, and minimizing stripping ratio, while maximizing net present value (NPV). According to the findings, the optimum number of push backs has been proposed to be between three and six, as lower quantities of push backs are more likely to achieve the calculated net present value, and have smoother stripping ratios for different pushbacks. This approach was examined in an operating mine and the optimum number of push backs determined to be four.
