Albite (NaA1Si308) is one of the important raw materials for the rapidly developing Turkish ceramic and glass industry. Prior to 1980, development of the ceramic industry in terms of raw material was dependent upon small-scale mining operations; in the last decade, these efforts have increased substantially. The aim of this study is to investigate the geochemical properties and distribution of albite occurrences in the Kocayayla district, which is about 12 km northeast of the town of Milas, about 50 km west of the city of Mugla in southwestern Anatolia. Kocayayla is also well known for its famous ancient city, Labranda. The field area is located in the Menderes Massif, which was formed by major tectonic events during the Late Proterozoic and subsequent periods. The target area was studied to prepare a detailed geological map (scale, 1:10,000), and to determine the formation of albite-mica-schist-quartzite borders in the host rock gneiss. To do this, systematic sampling of albite was done in the two main areas, the Sarikaya and Yumruta? regions. In the study area, albite zones are scattered within an area of about 20 km2, and they extend in a northeast-southwest direction; mica-schists and quartzite veins accompany these units. Mineralogical observations show that quartz is the main mineral associated with albite. In the ceramic industry, the albite + quartz assemblage is well known and is classified as "standard" or "super type," depending upon the content of TiO2 and Fe203. In this study, the Sarikaya albites (profile I) exhibit remarkably lower TiO2 (0.15% on the average) values contrasted to that of Yumruta? (profile 11; 0.24% on the average), whereas Fe203 values vary slightly from 0.076% to 0.085% in both regions.

Tailings originating from the gravity concentration of a gold ore containing about 14 g/t Au have been treated by various beneficiation methods. These tailings have been screened on the 147 and 74 micron sieves and the two coarsest fractions have been separated on shaking tables with unsatisfactory results, but the concentrates have been examined in polished sections for mineragraphic analysis. Very simple flotation flowsheets have been applied to collect most of the gold, recovery and grade varying with the regrinding time in a ball mill. Cyanidation tests have shown that this type of treatment is also applicable to such tailings.

Modeling a mine ventilation system is a formidable mathematical problem requiring the solution of twice as many equations as there are airways with half of these being quadratic equations. The addition of a mine fire to the problem adds many more complexities. The U.S. Bureau of Mines and Michigan Technological University attacked this problem in stages. During the 1970's and 80's, a series of computer simulation programs were developed which offered progressively increasing levels of modeling capability and accuracy. The current version of this software, MFIRE 2.0, was released in 1993. This programs provides for full dynamic state mass flow-based modeling of a mine ventilation system, and includes natural ventilation, mechanical ventilation, air reversals and recirculation, methane and fire contaminant spread, and moisture condensation and evaporation in the mass flow and heat exchange calculations. This program is a useful tool for routine ventilation planning and can significantly improve mine safety by enabling detailed quantitative analysis for mine emergency preplanning. This paper reviews the evolution of the MFIRE program from its infancy as a simple digital network simulator replacing analog computers to the present version.

Introduction The Mineral Resources Institute, The University of Alabama, has for the past three years been engaged in a program to develop a beneficiation system for eastern (Devonian) oil shales. One objective of that program was to evaluate advanced technologies for effecting a kerogen-mineral matter separation. Column flotation was among the advanced technologies selected for evaluation. Early in the program it was shown that column flotation was superior to conventional (mechanical) flotation and to the other advanced technologies being evaluated. The investigation then proceeded toward the further objective of defining the optimum operating conditions for column flotation. One observation made in the course of optimization testing was that introducing the feed into the froth (above the pulp-froth interface) resulted in an improved combination of concentrate grade and kerogen recovery. This observation was reported in a previous paper (Schultz and Bates, 1989). Because the practice of maintaining the pulp froth interface below the feed point is contrary to "conventional" practice, it was decided to subject the observation to a systematic series of tests. This paper describes a recent series of tests and the results that were obtained. Experimental equipment and procedure The arrangement of the column cell and auxiliary equipment for continuous flow testing is shown schematically in Fig. 1. The feed sump [O] is filled with a sufficient volume of prepared sample to permit a large number of tests to be performed (typically 12). Past experience has shown this is necessary to control sample variability and variability in the size distribution resulting from ultra fine grinding. The feed slurry is maintained at about 20% solids and is constantly recirculated and stirred. The sample is metered from the circulating pipe by a peristaltic pump [O]. The feed slurry is diluted with reagentized water [O] by a second peristaltic pump [O]. Wash water [O], also reagentized, is supplied through a third peristaltic pump [O]. While this feed system may seem unduly complex, it does permit users to independently vary either the wash water rate or the net solids content of the cell. In the tests reported here, the feed rate and net percent solids were constant at 12.5 gms/min. and 3.3%, respectively. Diluted feed enters the column through 6.35 mm-diam (0.25 in.-diam) copper tubing and is discharged upwardly at the center of the column. Tailings are discharged through flexible tubing that can be adjusted so as to control the position of the pulp-froth interface. The column is 76.2 mm-internal-diam (3 in.-internal-diam) and 1090 mm (43 in.) high. It is made from lucite tubing and is fitted with a 51-mm-diam (2-in.-diam) fritted glass air sparger having an average pore diameter of 50 µm. In performing a series of tests, the concentrate and tailing are allowed to discharge continuously. The system is allowed to equilibrate for 30 minutes after the pulp and froth reach operating levels. Concentrate and tailing samples are taken simultaneously for timed intervals (five to 15 minutes, depending on the volume of sample desired). After sampling, a change in operating conditions is made and the system is again allowed to equilibrate. The tests to determine the effect of the pulp-froth interface level were part of a larger series of tests in which the objective was to optimize the conditions for a rougher flotation stage in a two stage circuit. The sample used in this series of tests was an Alabama shale ground to d90 = 23.1 µm and d50 = 7.9 µm. The operating conditions remaining constant in this series of tests were as follows: Column height - 1600 mm (63 in.) Air sparser - 50 µm (average pore diameter) Spray water - 130 cc/min. Feed rate - 12.5 gm/min (0.4 oz per min) (dry solids) Percent solids - 3.3% Frother (Dowfroth 250) - 45 ppm The variable test conditions are tabulated in Table 1. Attempts have been made during the last three decades to establish a correlation between respirable dust dosage and the degree of progression of pneumoconiosis or silicosis amongst mine workers. Fair correlation has been possible only after the Johannesburg Pneumoconiosis Conference established mass concentration of dust in the respirable size range as the true measure of the incidence of pneumoconiosis. The author had established a good correlation between cumulative total respirable dust dosage as well as cumulative silica dosage and the category of pneumoconiosis according to ILO classification at Mufulira Copper Mine. Studies at Hutti also show a linear relationship between the average cumulative dust and silica dosage md the category of pneumoconiosis. However the maximum tolerable cumulative dust dosage for - prolonged exposure is 182 mg month/m3 - at Hutti as compared to 275 mg month/m3 at Mufulira. Similarly the maximum tolerable silica dosage for - prolonged exposure is Only 35 mg month/m3 at Hutti as compared to 55 mg month/m3 at Mufulira. The TLV for dust concentration at Hutti works out at 0.6 mg/m3 compared to 1.1 mg/m3 at Mufulira and the TLV of silica concentration at Hutti is 0.117 mg/m3 compared to 0.25 mg/m3 at Mufulira. The Hutti figure is however, closer to the TLV of 0.1 mg/m 3 recommended by ACGIH.

This study revealed significantly less favorable perceptions of the existing organizational safety climate among workers in the underground coal-mining sector compared with those in the industrial-minerals and sand, stone and gravel (SSG) sectors. Consequently, it is important to consider pragmatic ways in which health and safety management systems (HSMS) in coal mines can alter processes to improve these perceptions. Given the interdependencies of safety climate factors and HSMS elements, researchers explored mineworker perceptions of the supportiveness of organizational safety climate factors among mineworkers and identified significant differences in perceptions across sectors. In this paper, we suggest that health and safety professionals in underground coal mining and organizations with fewer resources or less mature HSMSs focus on these factors to bolster support for proactive safety performance. Potential barriers to implementing or improving relevant HSMS elements and ideas to help foster more favorable perceptions of organizational safety climate are also discussed.

Corrosion and product contamination have been difficult problems for extractive metallurgy industries in the U.S. because of the highly active chemicals used. During the past twelve years, other industries, particularly the chemical and paper segments, began to combat this problem with some degree of success using newer materials of construction, including reinforced plastics. These materials are made by combining a corrosion resistant thermosetting resin with a glass fiber reinforcing material and are used to con¬struct hoods, stacks, blowers, tanks, towers, pipe, and equipment of the most complex configurations. For service in contact with aggressive chemicals, the equipment is most often fabricated with the bisphenol-A fumarate polyester resins because of their resistance to corrosive attack. Data from both laboratory work and case histories of field applications are presented-for many common chemicals found in extractive processes. The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, commonly known as RCRA, which amends the previous Solid Waste Disposal Act, was signed into law on October 21, 1976. Members of the mining industry began their contacts with EPA in this area two to three years before the Act finally was passed, and that seemed and probably was all to the good. We reviewed and commented upon their studies and in general tried to acquaint them with the peculiarities and the uniqueness of the wastes generated by our industry, of which they were abyssmally ignorant. I suppose we thought that through the bureaucracy we might have some influence upon the provisions of the solid waste legislation that was being bandied about on the hill. Certainly the industry, in general, did very little direct lobbying, as I recall, and there were several reasons for that. For one thing we conceived that the legislation was aimed at the chemical industy and believed that if their people looked after their interests, ours would be safeguarded automatically. Also, the Federal Land Policy and Management Act (FLPMA) was heating up at the same time and, in fact, was signed into law on the same day. In addition, a great deal of lobbying activity was required by amendments of the Clean Air Act and Federal Water Pollution Control Act that were being put together in Congress. These were conceived to be of far greater importance to our industry than a bill to control mostly chemical wastes and, in fact, new bills in both areas became law the following year. Finally, the solid waste bill, RCRA, was patched together by committee staffs over one weekend and was reported out by a conference committee rather hurriedly. Some little goodies about mining were almost after-thoughts in this process.

"This article will share my ‘shift in career direction’ journey from corporate mine engineer, with 31 years of mining various commodities with a wide range of responsibilities in a variety of countries, to the world of academia. There are times in one’s career that a change is required, albeit perhaps not as drastic of a change as moving to teaching. This paper will share how the transition arose, the decision to make the change, the challenges of the first year in academia and the journey within academia going into the second year.As a graduate of the Montana College of Mineral Science and Technology (Montana Tech) with a B.S. mining engineering degree in May of 1982, my first job with Utah International in the Farmington, NM area took me back to my home state of New Mexico. Some of you will remember that the early 1980s was not a period of prolific opportunities for mining engineers, given low commodity prices, especially for copper (for example, Anaconda Co. had been taken over by Arco and was in the midst of closing down its Butte operations). Coal was good and the learning opportunities abounded with Utah (which became BHP and then BHP Billiton).Gold was taking off in the mid to late 1980s thanks to use of cyanide and heap leaching technology improvements, coupled with deregulation of the gold price, so I ventured off to work in the gold industry with a (then) junior Canadian company called Barrick at a new acquisition of theirs known as Goldstrike. That same gold surge was causing a shortage of iron ore mining engineers in Australia. So after a few years in Nevada, I uprooted the family and left for a little town in the Pilbara of West Australia, known as Newman, to work in the iron ore industry with BHP Iron Ore. An initial short overseas posting turned into six plus years before transferring to BHP’s Indonesian steam coal mines in Kalimantan on the island of Borneo. BHP was going through a rough period following some ill-fated projects (Magma Copper purchase, Beanup and HBI) and was reviewing assets and staffing, so internal opportunities became scarce. Employees were encouraged to “leave the company and find work elsewhere.” So, off I went to Argentina to try copper mining in the Andes with Minera Alumbrera. This short stint in South America was followed by a move to another mining town, Morenci, AZ, and a posting with Phelps Dodge (now Freeport- McMoRan). After 12-plus years without living close to snow, we moved to the Denver, CO area in a new position with Newmont Mining Corp. Along the way I became a professional engineer (Nevada) and completed a masters in project engineering and management. After 11 years with Newmont, I moved to Butte, MT where I accepted a position as assistant professor of mining engineering."

ENERGY POI.ICY-PRINCIPLES AND THEIR PRACTICE Persistently, at least since the end of World War 11, governments have intervened broadly, deeply, and incoherently in major energy markets. If we take a broad definition of energy that encompasses gas distribution and electric power, we can observe regulations of even older vintage. This trend, of course, is not unique to energy. Expansion of government controls has occurred in many areas. The relevant basic question about energy regulation, therefore, is not why is energy special, but whether any general principles exist to explain the wisdom of existing regulations. This review takes place at a time, the middle 1980s, in which a massive onslaught is being undertaken against government regulation. However, the present chapter is influenced primarily by my observations of the failures of energy regulations and not by any inspiration from those ideologically opposed to government intervention. Several subquestions arise in policy appraisal. A primary need is to establish clear objectives and determine the consistency between these goals and the policies imposed. Thus, the first step is to set objectives. The next is to outline ways to attain these goals. However, it should be recognized that many apparently distinct options are economically equivalent. When the goal is to charge producers or consumers for something, it is possible to attain the same result through either government ownership or taxing private transactions. The tax can raise the price to the level the government would have charged if it were the owner. Creation of a Department of Energy is not necessarily any different from having separate energy agencies well coordinated by some small supervisory body. Thus, a distinction should be made between substance and form in policymaking. The critical substance concerns such matters as whether the government imposes financial penalties, incentives, or rules to attain a goal. Then, there can be many equivalent ways to implement the basic policy form. The second prior illustration suggests that one favorite question is how to attain proper integration of policy. At various times, voices on either (or even both) sides of the Atlantic have called for a coordinated energy policy. The U.S. Paley Commission made this a primary goal for future policy. The western European governments that were the founding members of the Coal and Steel, Economic, and Atomic Energy Communities spent much time in the middle fifties and much of the sixties trying futilely to agree on an energy policy. (See Gordon, 1970 for an annotated review). The energy price rises of the 1970s rekindled United States interest in coordination. However, astute observers of the problem such as O. C. Herfindahl of the United States and Maurice Allais (1 962) in France warned the discussions confused form with substance. The crucial issues were what were the goals and what were the best types of policies to attain such goals. Policy suffered, not from poor organization, but from discord about the goals and how to attain them. All this suggests that we need principles to guide policy appraisal. A full survey of the laboratory and blast-furnace tests on 2 types of acid pellets is given. From the laboratory tests, carried out in an atmosphere containing hydrogen, it appears that type B, produced out of 100% magnetitic ores, has a far better low temperature disintegration index and a lower reducibility index than type A, produced from a hematite/magnetite mixture. The swelling index, chemical composition and mechanical properties of both types of pellets do not differ significantly. From the blast-furnace test, carried out with a burden consisting of 45% of pellets and 45% of sinter with basicsty ratio about 2.2, and at constant driving rate, it follows that there is no significant relationship between the disintegration value of the pellets and the blast-furnace permeability. If also is concluded that the lower reducibility of the type B pellets leads to a significantly higher coke consumption.

Minerals beneficiation commonly requires initial crushing and grinding so that the mineral phase we seek to concentrate is adequately liberated to obtain a product of specified grade at optimum recovery. To some degree this also is true for coal preparation. In the comminution process we liberate not only the product but also the tailings phase. The true objective is, therefor, to eliminate from the comminution circuit whatever particulate matter has reached specified liberation, regardless of whether the particle is product or tailings material. Overgrinding either of the two phases ties up mill capacity and usually also burdens the downstream processing steps by increasing costs or decreasing recovery, or both. In view of this situation, one would expect concentration steps to be commonly incorporated into the cominution circuit. The reasons this is not done may vary, but probably include the desire to utilize large scale unit operations, e.g., large mills, in conjunction with very simple processes. Hydrocyclones have satisfied this desire but may not always be employed for the right reasons. Hydrocyclones are indeed simple. They also are rugged and forgiving. Unfortunately, these virtues are frequently misused. The direct results are inefficient classification and overgrinding. The indirect results are added costs through recovery losses, unnecessary recirculation, and so on,

Silicosis among metal miners is an ancient disease, probably as old as mining itself.' However, the primitive forms of mining were not productive of much silica dust, and the short life span of slaves used in mining probably precluded the development of more than a few sporadic cases of silicosis. Early diagnostic terms of miners' asthma and miners' phthisis suggested an occupational relationship and a tubercular component, but little attention was given to silicbsis until the turn of this century when epidemics of silico-tuberculosis arose due to the great expansion of the mining industry in the United States, especially silver and gold mining. The expansion was accompanied by mechanization and the introduction of pneumatic tools, which generated increasing amounts of fine silica dust. Mining communities were crowded and hygiene was poor.' The tubercle bacillus would probably have flourished even without the predisposition of silicosis.' As is so often the case in occupational health, biostatistical analyses first called attention to the problem, and environmental-medical studies later confirmed its existence. The bio-statistical analyses were occupational mortality statistics compiled by the Prudential Life Insurance Company in 1907, showing evidence of excessive mortality from tuberculosis and relationship to dust exposure. New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources (NMBGMR) has been collecting data on uranium mining districts, mines and mills since it was created in 1927 and has converted years of historical data into a relational database that can be imported in ArcMap. The database includes information on mining districts, mines, mills and geochemistry, as well as photographs and bibliographic resources. The available data includes location, production, reserves, geologic, geochemical, resource potential and other data. The National Uranium Resource Evaluation (NURE) stream-sediment data provides geochemical analyses for >27,000 samples collected in New Mexico during the 1970s. The NURE hydrogeochemical data provides analyses of water samples. ArcMap includes the location of individual ore bodies as polygons and incorporates the mines and NURE data as individual site locations. The purposes of these databases are to provide computerized data that will aid in identifying and evaluating resource potential, resource development and management, production and possible environmental concerns, such as physical hazards (i.e., hazardous mine openings), indoor radon, regional exposure to radiation from the mines, background geochemical data and point sources of possible pollution in areas of known mineral deposits.

MINERALS INFORMATION PROGRAM Mineral data collection by the Federal Government actually began in 1882 with an appropriation by Congress to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Although the Bureau of Mines was instituted in 1910, it was not until 1924 that the collection, interpretation, and dissemination of worldwide information on production, consumption, and availability of minerals became the responsibility of the Bureau. The objective of the Bureau's minerals information program is to maintain and provide reliable, timely, and comprehensive data for analysis of national minerals problems. This program is implemented by a staff of specialists who cover about 100 mineral commodities and the mineral industries of 168 countries. Data are also provided on the minerals industry on the State and county level. The specialists analyze information to identify trends and problems, forecast future U.S. and world supply and demand for the nonfuel minerals, and relate trends and developments to their impact on the domestic minerals industry. Data Sources and Publications The primary sources of data concerning the domestic minerals industry are the companies that produce, use, and trade in these minerals. Approximately 60,000 survey forms are sent to industry, on a monthly, quarterly, semiannual, or annual basis, to obtain the data. Domestic trade data are provided by the Bureau of the Census, U.S. Department of Commerce. Information on mineral developments abroad is developed by Bureau specialists from mineral reports supplied by U.S. embassies worldwide, from primary source documents, from a review of the technical mining literature, and from onsite mine and plant visits in foreign countries. The information is disseminated through a number of Bureau publications: "Mineral Industry Surveys" provide aggregated data on a monthly. quarterly, or semiannual basis to give timely information on the most important mineral commodities. "Mineral Commodity Summaries," published each January, provides preliminary annual data on supply and demand and discusses significant events of the previous year. The final data are published later in the "Minerals Yearbook," which is the definitive historical record for mineral statistics. "Mineral Facts and Problems," an encyclopedic work issued every 5 years, covers industry structure, technology, supply-demand analysis. economic factors, reserves, and forecasts of U.S. and world demand for individual commodities. "Mineral Perspectives" and "Mineral Issues" cover important international mineral developments and significant issues of current U.S. policy as they relate to minerals. Discussions and analyses of mineral trends and developments also appear in other Bureau publications, such as "Minerals and Materials" and "Information Circulars." These publications provide the basis for analysis and policy determinations by the Bureau and by virtually every Federal agency concerned with minerals, defense issues, the national economy, and foreign relations. The data are also used by industry in planning capital investments in mines and processing plants, by financial analysts, by U.S. delegations in their work with international commodity groups, and by a host of other minerals related organizations. Data Bases The data bases used by the specialists for preparing publications or in response to a continuous stream of inquiries include both those that contain individual commodity data from respondents, and those that are summary data bases on production, trade, capacity, employment and a number of other minerals-related items, not all of which are derived from data reported to the Bureau of Mines. The data bases maintained on the mainframes are not accessible by non- Bureau users. Bauxite ore is used to produce alumina in the Bayer process. For each tonne of alumina produced, around 1 to 1.5 t of bauxite residue is generated, with an estimated 4 Mt of the residue generated worldwide in 2015, four times more in 1985. The residue is currently stocked in tailings dams. A new step in the Bayer process has been used to recover sodium hydroxide, which is used as a leaching agent, and reduce its content in the residue. After digestion, the residue is separated from the Bayer liquor and passed through press filters. This bauxite residue is known as a source of scandium. Characterization of the residue is an important step to map opportunities worldwide. For this reason, the goal of the present study was to characterize the bauxite residue and evaluate the challenges for scandium recovery. The scandium content was found to be 43 g/t, which makes this bauxite residue attractive for extraction purposes.

The majority of the regulations in Part 75 for underground coal mines have been in effect since March of 1970, almost nine years now. Although there have been some additions each year in specific areas where the need became apparent or the statute required some action, the bulk was promulgated on March 28, 1970 for the purpose of clarifying the statutory provisions of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. Many of those regulations were derived from the Federal Mine Safety Code, or from experience gained by the Bureau of Mines in the enforcement of Public Law 552. Upon passage of the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977, these same regulations remained in effect and the statutory requirements of the Act placed a responsibility upon the Secretary of Labor to promulgate additional regulations in specific areas not previously covered. The Federal inspectorate has received formal training at the National Mine Health and Safety Academy in the proper application of the regulations, as well as routine retraining and special training courses subsequent to the promulgation of new regulations. With some exceptions, the vast majority of these regulations are nothing more than good mining practice. Basically, the regulatory problems are two-fold. There are a few specific regulations that, under certain circumstances, compliance is nearly, if not actually, impossible. There is non-uniform application of enforcement of regulations by the inspectorate based on opinions developed from personal experience of inspectors or lack of experience. The record is replete with examples of overzealous inspectors applying regulations that either do not exist or have been stretched far beyond the intent of the regulations.

The Boss-Bixby deposit is one of several iron deposits that occur in the Precambrian igneous rocks of southeastern Missouri. It differs, however, from all of those deposits by its significant contents of copper, cobalt, and titanium, and its close relationship with a basic igneous intrusion. Ore microscopic study of selected drill core samples has shown that the hypogene ore minerals are magnetite, hematite, chalcopyrite, bornite, covellite, ilmenite, rutile, sphalerite, cobaltian pyrite, carrollite, scheelite, and wolframite. Subsequent partial oxidation has formed martite, pseudobrookite, and anatase. Textural evidence indicates that two stages of iron and iron-titanium oxide formation were followed by the deposition of the copper-iron sulfide minerals and carrollite.

Thickening remains relatively misunderstood since it is typically near the end of the process and not directly involved in metal recovery. When operating well, thickeners are ignored and left to run independently, the ‘out of sight, out of mind’ phenomena. However, when operating poorly, there is a lack of basic understanding and remedial actions to solve issues are reactionary rather than proactively addressing shortcomings. This series of papers breaks down in sequential order the stepped phases required to gain an appreciation and thorough understanding of the science behind thickeners, and key thickener components, and basic troubleshooting skills. This second paper starts with identifying the different approaches to thickener test work including static and dynamic settling tests followed by high-rate versus paste thickening. Complimentary to test work, the mechanisms surrounding coagulation and flocculation are presented and explained. The basic mechanisms for coagulation and flocculation are discussed to support the different test work approaches and provide the reader with the basic background.
