A spatial modeling technique based on the Bayesian neural network (BNN) is proposed. Incorporation of the Bayesian method for posterior probability of the output parameter helps calculate the uncertainty associated with the estimate. Parameters of the BNN model were selected using a grid search algorithm. The expected value and the variance of block support were calculated by Markov chain Monte Carlo sampling of the posterior distribution at discretized points within the block. The BNN model was validated by applying it to the Walker Lake data set and comparing the results with ordinary kriging results. The comparison revealed that the proposed BNN method performs marginally better than ordinary kriging. The variance map is less smooth than with ordinary kriging, and the proportional effect is less in the BNN-based model than in the ordinary kriging model. The developed BNN model was applied to the Coho block of a placer gold deposit in Nome, AK. Results reveal that the BNN model is globally biased for the Coho block and underestimates the sample mean. The grade volume curve was developed by calculating the block mean and block variance after discretizing the block into a number of points and applying the BNN model to each discretized point.

This paper presents a methodology for long-range studies of petroleum supply, to meet projected demands, that involves modifications of procedures used previously. This paper continues a series of papers on this general topic in the AIME, the most elaborate recent one being that by Warren Davis given in February 1958. The procedures considered here begin with the assumption that the governmental framework of regulations and taxes remains fixed- but that price changes. After .these procedures have been reviewed, the effects of changing certain governmental controls, will be considered in order to judge their potential effects on future supply. This is an essential step because controls cannot be expected to' remain static in a situation changing as much as the petroleum. industry and because such changes are within-the scope of alternative ways of adjusting to impending problems. The first procedure begins with: a) trends in drilling success, b) relation between field income from oil and gas and footage drilled, c) declines in capacity from production, d) trends in capacity of new and producing wells, e) all monetary values are in constant 1958 dollars, and f) target amounts of domestic crude petroleum production. 'From these components projections are obtained of: 1) numbers of future producing wells required, 2) footage drilled, 3) new wells drilled, 4) crude oil found, 5) capacity of producing wells, 6) completion costs, 7) finding costs, 8) production costs, and 9) average wellhead crude oil price consistent with the footage-field income relationship.

The Bushveld Complex of South Africa contains almost 90% of the world’s reserves of platinum group minerals (PGMs). In the flotation of PGMs, there are significant challenges arising from the need to treat ever-decreasing grades of the relevant ore deposits. The major challenge in the flotation of these ore bodies is the control and management of the gangue minerals, particularly silicates such as orthopyroxene and plagioclase feldspar which are often rimmed with talc which makes them naturally floatable. It has been shown that various polysaccharide depressants such as CMC and guar have different properties in terms of depressing the gangue minerals. Since the PGMs are often associated with sulphides, copper sulphate is widely used as an activator in PGM flotation but can inadvertently activate the gangue minerals and reduce the recovery of PtTe2 which accounts for up to 40% of the Pt in the Platreef ore body. Depressants also reduce the mass of solids reporting to the froth and can thus destabilize the froth. This effect on the froth can be mitigated by using higher frother dosages or water of higher ionic strength. In summary due care needs to be taken to carry out site test work to develop an optimum ratio of collector, frother, activator and depressant to ensure that the highest grades and recoveries of the PGEs are obtained while reducing depressant dosage as much as possible. Chromite recoveries can be reduced through the application of gravity separation or reducing entrainment through reduced water recovery. INTRODUCTION The Bushveld Complex located in the north of South Africa contains the world’s largest deposit of Platinum Group Minerals (PGMs) (1). The so-called upper Critical Zone of the Complex hosts the largest concentration of platinum group elements (PGEs) in the world. The Zone hosts the Upper Group Chromitite No.2 (UG2) reef and Merensky Reef as well as the Platreef mineralization of the northern limb of the Bushveld Complex. The Merensky pegmatoid Zone contains the base metal sulphide grains and associated PGMs. Of particular importance to the topic of this paper is the occurrence in these reefs of various gangue minerals. The Merensky Reef consists predominantly of orthopyroxene (~60%), plagioclase feldspar (~20%), pyroxene (~15%), phlogopite (5%) and occasional olivine. Secondary minerals such as talc, serpentine, chlorite and magnetite have widespread occurrence. Of these, talc is the only mineral to show significant natural floatability (2,3). Although present in small amounts talc is closely associated with pyroxene and imparts significant floatablity to the high concentrations of pyroxene present in these ores (4). The base metal sulphides consist predominantly of pyrrohtite (~40%), pentlandite (~30%) and chalcopyrite (~15%). The major platinum group minerals are cooperite (PtS), braggite [(Pt,Pd)NiS], sperrylite (PtAs2) and PGE alloys. The UG2 consists predominantly of chromite (between 60 – 90% by volume) with lesser silicate minerals (5 – 30% pyroxene and 1 – 10% plagioclase). Other minerals present in minor concentrations, can include silicates, oxides and base metal sulphides. Total PGE varies by locality but on average range between 4 and 7 g/t. The PGMs present in the UG2 Reef are highly variable, but generally the UG2 is characterised by PGE sulphides such as laurite (RuS2), cooperite (PtS) and braggite [(Pt,Pd)NiS. The base metal sulphides consist predominantly of chalcopyrite, pentlandite and pyrrhotite. The Platreef is located in the northern limb of the Bushveld Complex. This reef consists of a complex assemblage of rock types, with pyroxenites, serpentinites and calc-silicates being the most abundant. Base metal mineralization and platinum group element (PGE) concentrations are found to be highly irregular, both in value as well as in distribution. In Pennsylvania, 310 sampled sites of clay and shale have been evaluated for: potential use, chiefly as structural clay products, refractories, and lightweight aggregate; lithology; physical properties tests; fired tests, both quick-fire and rotary kiln; major-element chemical analyses, and quantitative five-component X-ray mineralogy for quartz, mica, feldspar, kaolinite, and chlorite-vermiculite-montmoril-lonite. Approximately 80 percent of the samples are of some potential use. Of 220 shale samples, 84 were potential lightweight aggregate sources and 83 potential brick sources. Binary correlations of test data versus potential use indicate that certain empirically determined parameters may be critical. These are: lithology, particularly for medium to super-duty refractories and lightweight aggregate; kaol-finite content for refractories versus low-temperature fired product sources; quartz content illustrating that there is an apparently necessary minimum quantity for brick; quartz content, which is low in high grades of lightweight aggregate; mica content, which is low for refractories and possibly high for lightweight aggregate; total iron, which is low for refractories and shows a 40 percent minimum for lightweight aggregate; carbon dioxide, which is low for refractorfes, beneficial in lightweight aggregate, and probably restrictive for some tiles choroite yermicalite, which is low for refractoies and possibly beneficial in lightweight aggregate. In Pennsylvania, clay and shale materials constitute one of the state's major economic mineral resources. To date, the testing program indicates considerable development potential in brick, tile, and lightweight aggregate industries, and perhaps a future potential for aluminum from shales that exceed 20 percent A12Q3.

A bewildering number of continuous thickeners and clarifiers are used in mineral industries and other heavy industries. General types are: 1. Conventional Thickeners (Fig. 1). 2. Thickeners with Flocculating Feedwells (Fig. 2). 3. Solids Contactors (Fig. 2). 4. Tray Thickeners (Fig. 3). 5. Lamellas (Fig. 4). 6. Conventional Thickeners with Lamellas 7. High Flow, Fluid Bed Thickeners (Fig. 5). These units must be adapted to varied applications. They must provide operating flexibility to meet process needs. Such factors multiply the decisions which must be made prior to the selection of a thickener. The seven types of thickeners listed above, with their variations, share design concepts which limit their application and which can be used to evaluate their performance. Some of these are listed: 1. Feed velocities must be limited and/or controlled. 2. Natural or reagent flocculation is necessary. 3. Horizontal settling area is the basis for capacity. 4. Overflow velocities must be limited and/or controlled. 5. A controlled underflow is necessary. Applying these needs to the basic process concepts is thickener selection. The basic function of a thickener in the minerals industry is the separation of a thickened sludge containing fine solids from water. In many areas of the United States much of the most readily minable coal is nearing depletion, while at the same time, increased national attention is being given to coal as a major alternate energy source. If some of the thinner, more erratic, deeper and lower quality coals, which comprise the great bulk of U.S. resources, are to be mined efficiently and economically, greater attention must be devoted to careful planning of mines and to preparation facilities. One of the cornerstones to careful and successful mine planning is precise knowledge of coal thickness and areal distribution, roof and floor quality, and seam quality. Data on which this knowledge is based are obtained from various borehole techniques and, in some cases, seismic methods. Despite the many technical innovations that have been made in acquiring subsurface data, little attention has been given to the problem of systematic storage and retrieval procedures of the data and assembling them in a form that can be used for various computer mapping programs now available. (See Bilter and Martin, 1977; Bryant and Zobrist, 1977 and Farrell and Wherry, 1978). The purpose of this paper is to describe a series of user oriented programs developed over the past five years which are specifically designed for precise logging of rock core, accurate storage and retrieval of this data, correlation of seams between logs, tagging seams, computer assisted data posting of maps and preparing maps and profile sections for report illustrations. The entire system stresses increased precision and speed for a series of operations which are now largely manual, time consuming and prone to error.

For over 40 years, Mufulira underground copper mine has been recording incidents of rockburst. Laboratory tests and numerical analyses were carried out to understand the rockburst mechanism at the Mufulira mine. Rockburst did not occur in the chain pillars or at the mining face, but mainly in the mining drives along diminishing pillars or ahead of the mining face. RQD suggested that the rock mass in the rockburst areas was relatively intact. Laboratory tests confirmed that the rock at Mufulira mine is very strong and brittle. Elastic stress analyses for the rockburst sites by 3D displacement discontinuity method (DDM) indicated very high stress in the chain pillars and low-stress concentration at the sites of rockburst during the initial mining stages. However, there was no apparent positive correlation between the elastically calculated normal stress values and the occurrences of rockbursts. The 2D elastic FEM analysis was conducted under the concentrated stress by DDM and indicated that some stress increase with face advance for the rockburst in the vicinity of the mining face. However, stress severity indicated almost no increase, and the rockbursts cannot be explained as an instantaneous rock mass failure due to stress increase by mining. Therefore, a creep damage model was proposed to clarify the mechanism of the rockbursts. Cumulative rock damage was evaluated for the edge elements of each sidewall of the mining drives, based on the normal stresses by 3D DDM. The rockburst occurrences were well hindcasted. A method to estimate the volume of the rockburst source was proposed, and a likely result was obtained.

Outokumpu Oy has acquired considerable experience with on-stream X-ray fluorescence analyzers and with computer control of flotation processes over several years. It became evident at the outset of this work that a reliable and accurate on-stream analyzer was more than a collection of different pieces of hardware linked together. Extensive work was done to develop an integral analyzer system, beginning with process samples through the spectrometer to report typewriters, recorders and the control computer. To date, over ten Courier-300 analyzer systems based on this development have been installed world-wide, several of which provide the key information for successful computer control systems. Computer control of flotation processes has been under development at the Pyhäsalmi concentrator since 1968. Two different control strategies have been implemented. The copper flotation is controlled by means of a mathematical model and economic criteria, whereas the "evolutionary operation principle" is applied to the zinc flotation. The computer control system installed at' the Vuonos-mine has been developed according to the same guidelines. In order to consolidate this wide experience, a flotation computer control system, Proscon-100, was developed by Outokumpu Oy, and the first system was installed at Kotalahti in 1972. In addition to the technological experience, enough information has also been gathered to illustrate the economical, benefits accruing through the use of these advanced tools of automation.

The hostile nature of industrial autogenous (AG)/semi-autogenous (SAG) mill operation necessitates the need for robust and reliable online measurements. Mill slurry density is regarded as a critical variable and requires a suitable range for grinding efficiency. In this work, mill acoustic sensing of five different slurry densities (50, 60, 70, 80 and 90 wt.% solids) was investigated using a laboratory-based AG/SAG mill. The results showed that slurry density of 70-80 wt.% solids gave the highest mass of -75μm particles and similar acoustic intensity. The mill acoustical level increased continuously coupled with energy reduction as a function of increasing slurry density, an indication of potential realtime measurement.

The U.S. Bureau of nines evaluated the potential availability of tungsten from 57 tungsten mines and deposits in 19 market economy countries (1). The 38 properties that were producing at the time this study was performed contain approximately 375,000 tons1 of W03 (tungsten trioxide). The total estimated recoverable resource from all properties studied, both producers and nonproducers, was 1.2 million tons W03 (demonstrated level). Approximately 143,000 tons of W03 is recoverable from producing properties with costs at or below the January 1983 market prices. The study indicates that by 1990 production from currently operating mines in market economy countries will decrease as their demonstrated resources become exhausted. Some of this potential decline may be offset by lower than anticipated levels of market demand, discoveries of additional resources at producing mines, development of other known deposits, and/or discoveries of new deposits. Development of new tungsten resources in market economy countries will likely result in costs higher than exist at currently producing properties. The People's Republic of China has been steadily increasing production and export of tungsten in various form and currently supplies about 25 pct of U.S. imports. China's tungsten mines are large, high-grade operations capable of producing at relatively low cost. These factors, coupled with China's apparent need for foreign exchange, could lead to further expansions of production and exports from China, with a consequent increased dependence by market economy countries on China for tungsten requirements and a threat to the survival of the market economy countries' tungsten industries.

The United States has traditionally been the world's largest producer and net exporter of phosphate rock and related fertilizer products with the exception of rock exports from Morocco. In recent years, however, U.S. producers have faced increasing competition from operations in foreign countries, leaving the future position of the U.S. phosphate .industry as a leader in the world markets somewhat less certain. This paper will review the U.S. phosphate rock industry in relation to its known demonstrated reserves, its historical and present production and export levels, and its future mining potential. The paper will include an analysis of the availability of phosphate rock in the United States represented by cost-tonnage relationships. The U.S. phosphate rock industry has for decades provided raw materials at reasonable costs to the phosphate fertilizer industry, and the fertilizer products have been made available to both domestic and international markets. Natural soils normally contain low quantities of phosphorus, and cultivation exhausts the available phosphorus through the removal of harvested products. Yields diminish, and it becomes necessary to apply phosphorus to the soil in an amount at least sufficient to compensate for removal. Raising the level of phosphorus also permits nitrogen and potash fertilizer nutrients to be effective and sustain the high crop yields necessary to support increasing food demands. In only a few areas of the world are soils, climate, rainfall, and low-cost phosphate fertilizer available to assure high agricultural yields in successive years. One of these areas is the central United States and south central Canada. By contrast, in the Soviet Union, the weather conditions in farming areas frequently cause crops to either bake or drown in the field. To attempt to counter the effect of weather on production, the U.S.S.R. has increased use of fertilizer and equipment in recent years. The effect of fertilizer on various crops has been documented, and in all cases, improvements in yield and plant development were noted, as was the ability of fertilizer to mitigate the effects of unfavorable climatic conditions. Phosphate resources can be classified as either identified or undiscovered. In the identified classification, we are principally concerned with demonstrated phosphate resources, or those that have been measured or indicated. In the southeastern United States, the phosphate mining areas of Florida and the Carolinas have been explored and drilled extensively in attempts to locate new deposits. The exploration programs indicate that another Florida Bone Valley Formation or North Carolina Pamlico River Deposit is unlikely to be discovered in the southeastern U.S. coastal plain. Phosphate rock deposits of commercial interest in the western United States are located in Montana, western Wyoming, northern Utah, and southeastern Idaho. The deposits are in the Permian Phosphoria Formation with most of the mining activity occurring in Idaho. Although substantial demonstrated resources have been identified, recovery costs and the field's isolation from markets have restricted growth of the industry in the west. The phosphate rock deposits in Tennessee are well known, and it is estimated that about 29 million metric tons1 are potentially recoverable. Undiscovered deposits of brown rock in Tennessee would likely be quite small.

A fluidized countercurrent ion-exchange system was developed, operated, and evaluated by the Bureau of Mines. The system consisted of integrated multiple-compartment absorption and elution columns in which the solution flows are continuous except for short periods when resin increments are withdrawn. The exchange of uranyl sulfate between a simulated acid leach uranium solution and a strong-base, ion-exchange resin together with the subsequent elution with an acidified sodium chloride solution was studied. The effects of the number of sections, section heights, amount of resin withdrawal, and solution flow rates were investigated. Also examined were the kinetic and equilibrium relationships for the absorption step. The experimental data indicate a strong interdependence between variables. Solution retention time appears to be a major limiting variable. The column was efficient over a range of conditions, but close control was needed for optimum operation.

The first of a series on the evaluation of rock cutting tools, this paper discusses the results of full-scale laboratory drilling tests that compare the performances of several polycrystalline diamond cutter (PDC) coring bits. The tests were performed in welded tuff as part of a site characterization program. Number of cutters, size of cutters, air course design, and other parameters were evaluated as they affect penetration rate, but this paper focuses mainly on the relationships of torque vs. thrust (weight-on-bit), specific energy vs. penetration rate, and thrust vs. penetration rate. These relationships change in diagnostic ways according to bit type, bit condition, and type of welded tuff.

This paper provides a brief look at a proposed short-longwall for coal, development. The proposed method is an attempt to realize the advantages of longwall mining in deposits that, historically, would only be minable by continuous mining methods. An overview of the proposed layout, development requirements, production rate, ventilation scheme and other associated features is provided. This mining method could help operators in above-drainage seams where minable areas are smaller. It may also have application in areas that are peppered with gas wells and in environmentally sensitive areas which preclude the use of conventional longwalls.

The tonnage produced on mechanized automated retreating longwall faces in the United States is growing rapidly. This time last year some 14 faces were operating, and in addition to that, three were known to be down looking towards revision or repairs before being placed back in service. These, it is believed, are now in service. It is estimated at the present time, therefore, that somewhere between 20 and 25 faces are being operated in the country. A survey made last year by the School of Mines, West Virginia University, indicated that longwall mining in general has been beset with a great many problems, some more serious than others. The problems that we propose to discuss here are those pertaining to roof and floor trouble in the tailgates. Longwalls are operating in this country at the present time under an overburden ranging from 200 feet to nearly 3000 feet. Main and tailgate entries are operating in panels of up to five each, with the width of the pillars between these entries varying from 20 to 50 feet. Face lengths are running from 270 feet to 670; actually a face 800 feet long should be possible. The most economical face is often spoken of as being around 450 feet.

This subject was introduced last April in a paper presented in Birmingham, Alabama, by James E. Elkin, General Superintendent of Duquesne's Coal Department. This paper will cover some of the same data and in addition it will update and further describe our experience. Our Portal No. 3 was started in June 1965 with battery tractor-trailer face haulage. This mine is operating in the Sewickley seam in Dunkard Township, Greene County, in Southwestern Pennsylvania as shown on Fig. 1. The Warwick group of mines fronts on the Monongahela River and extends westward for some ten miles as shown on Fig. 2.

Dissolution within Permian evaporites of the Delaware basin has created extreme lateral geologic and physical property inhomogeneity within and above the evaporites. Discriminating a sulfur deposit's geophysical signature from other variances is difficult. This is particularly true of porosity-dependent gravity and electrical methods. However, other techniques that detect alteration of strata above sulfur deposits may be applicable individually or in combination with other types of data. Relationships between sulfur deposits and gravity, magnetic, gamma radiation, spontaneous potential, and soil geochemical measurements are illustrated by data from several Delaware basin geophysical and geochemical surveys.

Engineers face significant challenges when determining what geometry provides the most profitable and safe stope for extraction. Several techniques and optimization algorithms have been developed in recent years, but most fail to find optimal solutions because they are heuristic or LP-based without efficient geometric constraints. This paper presents a two-dimensional binary linear programming (BLP) model for determining the optimal combination of blocks in a stope that maximizes the economic value of the layout of stopes for a sublevel deposit. The work draws from Queyranne and Wolsey’s (2017 & 2018) formulations of tight constraints for bounded up/down times in production planning problems to formulate novel and efficient geometric constraints along with geotechnical and grade constraints for the BLP stope layout optimization problem. Results from the model indicate that it is possible to formulate efficient shape constraints in LP-based approaches. The model used for the numerical example contained 144 valuable blocks out of 774 blocks, which translates into an economic value of $53.21M. The BLP model selected 60 valuable blocks and 13 waste blocks that met all constraints translating into a maximum economic value of $34.4M in 1.83 hours within a gap tolerance of 0.00%.

This paper will discuss the background information about rock cutting tools used for soft ground excavation, their history and evolution. A brief review of the current state of the art manufacturing technology will be presented and some parameters related to the material used in the drag and conical type pick cutters and their impact on their life and performance will be explained In addition, the selection procedures for choosing the right bit for excavation of a particular geological formation will be reviewed A set of guidelines will be provided for initial selection of the tools for various machines and rock formations. The methods for estimation of the tool life in various materials and the influencing parameters along with limitations of the rock cutting tools will be discussed as well.

The Iron Ore Industry has perhaps seen more varied and drastic changes in its approach to crushing and grinding in the last 5 years than any of the other mineral industries, Multimillion ton per year plants have become common place. Centralized control and computers have become an established benefit. Autogenous grinding along with a variety of rod and ball grinding flowsheets are in use. This morning I will discuss a few of the more important and new concepts in the control of these crushing and grinding circuits.
