Until recently, the volumes delivered and unloaded from heap-leaching pads have been estimated by manual methods at Wharf Resources' South Dakota operation. In August 1989, the Engineering Department acquired the MINE-SURVEY software developed by GEM COM Services, Inc. of Vancouver, Canada, as part of a mine planning/grade control software package. The implementation of MINE-SURVEY for pad control resulted in a cost-effective tool to provide accurate and prompt estimates of ore delivered or unloaded from the pads. Volumes can be calculated in a matter of minutes as opposed to hours or days. Another benefit is the ease of comparison of as-build and designed volumes, plotting cross-section in any orientation, importing into AUTOCAD, validation of ore densities and truck factors. This paper describes the application of the MINE-SURVEY systems in heap leaching pad volumetrics.

Sampling and geological models are the basis of recoverable resources models. They are pillars of mineral resources and reserves estimation, and what geostatistical methods for grade estimation should rely upon. The resource model is best estimated if geostatistical methods make good use of sound geologic models. Data collection from the original drill holes, including field procedures and the quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) of those samples are pillar one of a resource model. The second pillar of the model is the good use of the logged geological information, resulting robust geological interpretations, and the corresponding three-dimensional models of those interpretations. These models are partly subjective and mostly conditioned by the quality of logging and the geologist’s experience. They are also conditioned by the quality of the three-dimensional models built, regardless of the modeling method employed, traditional or implicit. Grade estimation is more commonly done by applying some geostatistical method and using the two basic sources of information, data and geologic model. Multiple stages are involved in this process, and in all of them there are uncertainties and risks that have to be dealt with. Knowledge, understanding, interpretation, and management of the model’s fundamentals are critical, given that they directly affect its accuracy and predictive quality. The mitigation of related risks allows for the creation of opportunities, generating value and reducing the project’s uncertainty. This paper discusses some of the key variables, uncertainties, and risks involved in the resource modeling process, illustrating with specific examples; discusses possible risk mitigation alternatives, and proposes best practices to avoid or mitigate those uncertainties. Emphasis is placed on taking advantage of technological advances without ignoring fundamentals. INTRODUCTION In the area of mineral resource estimation, one alarming trend that these authors have observed in the past 20 years or so is that the care and diligence in checking the work as it progresses has generally diminished. This is, perhaps, an unintended consequence of the availability of new technologies and tools that attempt simplify and speed up the work involved. This has led to a more casual attitude towards checks and balances that have to be in place at any given stage of the process before proceeding to subsequent stages, as best practices dictate. To some extent, some of these aspects are covered in international standards for resource estimates reporting (JORC, 2012; CIM, 2010). But these are broad, and do not specifically recommend best practices to a level of detail that would have an impact on certain aspects of the process. There are numerous references in the geology and mining journals and conferences that discuss the consequences of poor recoverable resource models (Baker and Giacomo, 1998; Vaughan, 1997).

This paper describes the derivation of a set of simultaneous algebraic equations that can be solved to produce a rigorous theoretical mass balance around solution mining wells. This mass balance can then be compared with a mass balance calculated from field measurements to provide the percentage of mass balance closure. Significant deviations from the closure can be an indication that the wells are either gaining or losing circulation fluids. The equations also provide calculations for the amount of water and dissolved mineral that accumulates in the well during the mining process, as well as the net mining rate. Equations for both single mineral mining and multiple mineral mining are discussed. They can easily be formatted into spread sheets for rapid calculation of field measurement data.

Relax: the world today is not running short of many mineral commodities, even though prices are spiraling upward. Einstein?s observation still holds true that everything is still relative, as long as one can pass on the incremental costs of production to the consumer. However, a strong consensus exists among many of the companies comprising the minerals processing industry that it is becoming increasingly difficult to find the easy-to-mine, high-quality resources that make juicy profit margins, which shareholders like. For the most part, the resource cherries have all been picked, and established mineral processing companies that are exhausting their reserves, or in the process of looking to add reserves so as to create longevity for their company, have no recourse but to look long and hard at what were once considered the dregs of the earth. Even end users, such as steel companies, are now looking to become ?miners,? to establish captive iron ore resources. Owning a captive resource facilitates a dependable supply of feed materials, which translates into effective cost control and a guarantee for a thriving sustainable business in the future.

Hypersonic tunnel boring (HTB) uses directed, high velocity projectile impacts to remove rock. HTB is highly independent of rock strength and targets hard, abrasive rock and variable rock environments. This paper discusses history, theory and presents test (2×2 m and .75×.5 m tunnels) field trial results and technical and economic evaluation. The HTB tests are compared against the historic ‘project REAM’ and the concept against tunnel boring machines and drill & blast in design studies for full-scale 12 m and 4.5×5.5 m tunnels. The positive results indicate that under these conditions HTB can replace Drill & Blast and Tunnel Boring Machines.

Well designed and maintained haul roads are the key to minimizing truck haulage on-road hazards and costs, as well as increasing productivity. However, practically designing and managing a haul road for optimal performance is often difficult to achieve. Poorly designed and built roads exhibit high rolling resistance - a 1% increase in road rolling resistance can typically reduce speed on ramp by as much as 10% - and on the flat by up to 26%. In the current economic climate, investment and operating decisions come under scrutiny. In the long run, this scrutiny returns improved efficiencies and leaner, healthier operations. The focus of this evolving evaluation process should and will certainly fall on haulage operations ? simply by virtue of their contribution to overall cost of operations ? often in excess of 50% of total costs for deep open-pit mines. Whilst the end result - improved efficiency and reduced cost per ton hauled ? is not in itself problematic, it is the route, or process followed to achieve these savings that needs to be carefully managed. We can be guided on this journey by our understanding of how a road design is developed, and, critically, the interplay between a good design and safe, cost efficient haulage. This paper briefly summarizes the evolution of mine haul road design, from the seminal USBM work of Kaufman and Ault in 1977, through to current geometric, structural, functional and maintenance management design components. These augmented design and management guidelines have been developed over the past decade, both in response to the requirements of mine operators for more safe and efficient haulage systems, and the truck manufacturers? requirements for a more predictable and controlled operating environment. These developments have been paralleled by the need to minimize haulage hazards, both from a health and safety perspective. Whilst improved mine haul road design does indeed reduce haulage accidents, recognition also needs to be given to human factors which are a significant contributor to haulage accidents. The human factor is the most problematic to address in a road design. It is often easier break the link between the interactive effects which may lead to accidents than trying to predict and reduce human error. These human factor interactive effects include the geometric, structural and functional design components and to prevent an accident or reduce the severity of its consequences, a road should be more accommodating to human error. The more that is known about human error, the better a road can be designed to accommodate those actions or non-standard practices that would, on a poorly designed road, invariably escalate an error into an accident.

"Pareto analysis was used to investigate the failures database of a Hitachi EX1900 hydraulic shovel over one year of continuous operation. The hydraulic system and hydraulic links, hoses and piping were identified as the most critical system and subsystem, respectively. A three-parameter gamma distribution function was identified as the best fit for a probabilistic modeling of the time between failures (TBFs). This distribution was used in a Monte Carlo reliability analysis of the hydraulic system. Autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA), within the context of a time series analysis of the TBFs, was proposed as a viable alternative to the traditional technique of distribution fitting. The mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) metric was used to compare the two models. The MAPE value that resulted from the ARIMA was 66 percent smaller than that from the traditional technique in predicting the TBFs.Resumen ¦ Se usó análisis Pareto para investigar la base de datos de fallas de una pala hidráulica Hitachi EX1900 durante un periodo de un año de operación continua. Early in the 60's the author served as Chairman of the Engineering Foundation's Coordinating Committee on Air Pollution Research. One of our objectives was the development of a study on the measurement of stack emissions. Three publications of the Foundation resulted from these efforts to focus attention on the stack sampling problem.1,2,3 Two of these were annotated bibliographies covering 197 references. The third reported the results of a workshop meeting at which some 21 individuals from research institutes, industry and government discussed the possible and probable areas of research that would add to or increase the ease, precision and utility of sampling gaseous and particulate matter emitted from stacks. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers has had in its Power Test Codes a Standard Code for Determining the Dust Concentration in a Gas stream4 since 1941, The American Industrial Hygiene Association has published, in its Air Pollution Manual,5 a Section on Stack Sampling. Industry and regulatory agency requirements for stack sampling have utilized some modification of the alternatives in methodology. The first operation permitted under Michigan’s Part 632 Non-Ferrous Mineral Mining Law, it opened in 2014 and is expected to produce 163 kt (360 million lbs) of nickel, 134 kt (295 million lbs) of copper and small amounts of other metals over its estimated nine-year lifespan.The company extracts approximately 2 kt/d (2,200 stpd) from the underground nickelcopper mine using a bench-and-fill stoping process. Accessed from the surface by specialized underground trucks, the vehicles carry about 45,400-kg (100,000-lb) loads through a 1.6-km (1- mile) long and 5.4-m (18-ft) diameter ramp shaft descending into the earth at a 13 percent grade. Stoping is a bottom-up method that involves systematically blasting columns of loosened ore that is then mucked by front loaders into trucks and backfilled using cemented and uncemented rockfill."

The Chinese energy and mineral industries are readying themselves for a period of dynamic transition, unprecedented in the country's long and sometimes turbulent history. The transition comes as a result of the government's new program of "Four Modernizations" in its agricultural, defense, industry, and science and technology sectors. The announced program is generally considered by Western observers to be a moderate, pragmatic approach to get China on the road to industrial parity with Western nations by the year 2000. The game plan calls for integration with the West to beef up Chinese know-how and the purchase of foreign technology to supplement areas where China lacks the ability to do so itself. While the role of energy and minerals is not specifically mentioned in the program, it was made clear to ME that China realizes the basis of any sustained modernization program is tied closely to the health of its minerals sector. Various published reports have indicated the existence of an already vibrant energy and minerals sector with world rank production in coal, iron ore, tin, antimony, cement, pyrite, asbestos and tungsten to name just a few. For the most part, except for the export metals, the primary focus of China's production has been on fulfilling domestic needs. Now the new initiatives are aimed not only at self-sufficiency, but also on propelling the country's natural resource clout into international prominence. With a mineral resource base that is considered by many westerners a potential bonanza, China's new long march toward modernization will be an exciting adventure, well worth watching. Big Projects Spark Excitement China's renewed commitment to a more liberal program is as much a desire to "walk on its own two legs" as it is a backlash from the frustrating years that followed the Cultural Revolution of the 1960s and early 1970s. Much of the early excitement was initiated by China's Premier and Party Chairman Hua Guo-feng in speaking to the fifth National People's Congress (NPC) in 1978. Here, Chairman Hua presented the Communist Party's 10-year blueprint for economic development. Specifically, the Party's plans called for completion of 120 large-scale industrial projects by 1985. Primary amines are strong collectors of apatites and they can selectively float sedimentary phosphates from calcareous ores. However, secondary and tertiary amines and tri-methyl ammonium salts were ineffective. The use of kerosene reduces the collector requirements because hydrocarbon is coadsorbed along with the amine on the mineral surface. The heats of reaction of aminium ions with such anions as phosphate, carbonate and sulfate, were measured in a microcalorimeter and discussed in terms of the solubility of the precipitates formed and their relationship with the adsorption mechanism of primary amines on phosphate minerals. Experimental evidence supports a view that primary amines are adsorbed through chemical interaction between the aminium and phosphate ions at the mineral surface.

At long last, mining is on the rebound in Minnesota?s Iron Range and the excitement is starting to show. The SME Minnesota Section?s annual meeting was once again held in the heart of Iron Range country, at the Duluth Entertainment and Conference Center on the Duluth waterfront. The conference boasted a record attendance of 475 people and its largest-ever trade show. Appearances by Governor Mark Dayton?s new Iron Range Resources & Rehabilitation Board (IRRRB) appointee, Tony Sertich, as well as a local Fox news crew (see clip on SME website [link: http://fox21online.com/news/duluth-mining-conference-breeds-optimism-tech-innovation]) made clear that a lot of eyes [ ] are on the industry as it dusts itself off from the 2008-2009 recession. While the early years of the 21st century were very good to the Iron Range, the global drop in commodities prices and production left many companies reeling and brought back bad memories of the collapse of the industry in the 1980s. However, two years of solid growth and a rebound to above pre-2008 production levels have let the Minnesota mining industry to relax a little and talk seriously about long-term growth and stability.

Acceptable working environments in production areas and service openings of Mindola Mine on the Zambian Copperbelt are currently maintained with an air volume of 1000 cu m/s and 5500 kW of installed refrigeration plant. It is planned to open up additional deeper areas of the mine for future production. Temperature problems, due to the increased heat generation from various underground sources are recognized as potential hinderances to efficient production. Findings of research work indicate that the present total heat output of 58,000 kW will inevitably increase by the second five-year period of the deepening program to 52,900 kW and by the fifth five-year period to 63,200 k\V. Estimated WB and DB temperatures, representing the total heat generation in stope faces and development headings during these same periods are predicted to increase to 53.8/40.2 °C and 35.5/42.1 °C respectively. It is assessed that the nominal refrigeration capacity needs to be progressively increased to 9,000 k\V This paper deals with the thermal problems in Mindola Mine, current heat output calculations, future prediction of temperature and heat load in various working areas of the mine with the application of computer programs and interpretation of data in order to find the effective solution for long-term planning of ventilation and air-conditioning.

Seismic events can be induced by mining due to unstable rock failures or slips along geologic structures leading to the sudden release of strain energy stored within the rock near underground openings. Depending on their intensity and proximity to the working area, seismic events may raise safety concerns, and thus the forecasting of the seismic potential in advance of mining can mitigate safety hazards. The integration of seismic data into geomechanical modeling can provide a tool for identifying areas with elevated potential for seismic activity. In previous works, a methodology was developed to forecast seismic potentials in a pseudo-2D geomechanical model. In this paper, seismic events, ranging in magnitude from about -1.0 ML to 3.7 ML, recorded in a deep longwall mine (> 450 m) in Virginia during mining of six adjacent panels, were evaluated to identify areas where larger magnitude events (> 1 ML) had occurred. A three-dimensional geomechanical model of the same area was constructed in the 3DEC software to calculate the state of energy in the system with the progress of mining along the entire length of each panel. The variation in the energy content of the model was monitored, and zones with potentially damaging slip-type events along bedding planes followed by compressive-type events in the sandstone roof are the mechanism for large seismic events in the studied mine. The locations of anomalous events corresponded to the regions where both compression-type SPI (C-SPI) and slip-type SPI (S-SPI) were elevated. The modeling results were compared with the recorded seismic events to evaluate the model performance in forecasting the seismic potentials. The model was able to forecast 100% of regions with elevated and moderate seismic potential and 89% of regions with low seismic potential. This shows the applicability of energy balance calculations for forecasting the approximate location and timing of destructive seismic events in advance of mining.

"The authors have successfully developed an innovative rehabilitation concept, which meets actual technical standards and minimizes the impact on the operation of a key conveyor tunnel. A flexible and stepwise ground support rehabilitation program utilized a combination of yielding steel arch sections with grout filled fabric hoses, which represents a fast and safe backfilling support system. The system was developed and successfully installed at Bingham Canyon Mine, the world’s largest open pit copper mine, which also includes numerous underground structures. The mine is owned and operated by Kennecott Utah Copper (RTKC) a fully owned subsidiary of Rio Tinto. The system was implemented at a conveyance tunnel, which was originally designed as a railroad tunnel, but was re-commissioned and is currently used as a conveyor belt tunnel to transport ore from the open pit to processing facilities outside the mine. The existing structure showed signs of overstressing due to movements in the surrounding rock mass, which had to be addressed with a yielding support system in order to provide safe access into the tunnel. However, the impact on the conveyor belt operation due to support installation was to be limited to the bare minimum. Keywords: rehabilitation, yielding support, mining, stabilization, and grout filled fabric hose.PROJECT DESCRIPTION The C6 Tunnel is considered a critical asset for the operation of the Bingham Canyon mine as it comprises the standard route for transporting crushed ore from the open pit to the processing facility on a continuous conveyor belt system. The C6 tunnel was originally built as a railroad tunnel. Construction was completed in 1959. The original horse-shoe shaped cross section of the tunnel was 18 feet wide and 24-1/2 feet high [8]. The tunnel length was approximately 18,000 feet. During its service life, the railroad tunnel has undergone several transformations. The length of the tunnel towards the Bingham Canyon pit was shortened over the course of mining operations and the railroad tracks in the tunnel were removed. The invert was partially backfilled (3 feet typical) and a 72 inches belt conveyor was installed. Currently, the C6 Tunnel is nominally only approximately 21 feet high and 15,000 feet long. Ground Support and Rehabilitation Measures prior to 2014 The C6 tunnel was mined mainly with conventional mining methods, using drill & blast as the typical one. However, the weak geological sections, such as those encountered in the Fortuna fault, were excavated by shaping and chipping with machine-held moils [8]."

The Deserado Mine and transportation system is the fuel supply portion of the Bonanza Power Plant project. Deserado Mine con¬sists of an underground mine with a capacity of 1,224,700 tonnes (1,350,000 tons) of clean coal per year, a 649 tonne (715 tons) per hour closed water circuit jig type preparation plant, a 5.6-kilometer (3 ½ -mile) overland conveyor with covered slot storage, a unit train rail load-out and 59.5 kilometers (37 miles) of totally independ¬ent, captive electrified railroad. Planning and exploration started in March of 1978. Construction of all facilities was completed in April of 1984, approximately six years after initial planning was commenced. This paper will discuss exploration, environmental permitting, mine planning, engineering and construction of the Deserado Mine project.

The effect of selective dispersants as wet grinding aids for ores is demonstrated on laboratory scale batch and continuous grinding equipment. A complete characterization of behavior is performed on a given ore to demonstrate correlations involving torque, % solids, net production rate, and slurry weight and volume loading. The relationship between such laboratory data and industrial scale testing results is very consistent.

This presentation will represent a diversion from the central theme of Cordilleran geology, in both time and space, as we move 2,000 miles east of Spokane to eastern Canada, specifically the province of Quebec, to discuss a major new Archean-age volcanogenic massive sulphide deposit called Louvicourt. The deposit is located in the Val d'Or camp in the prolific Abitibi Greenstone Belt some 400 miles north of Montreal. It was discovered by Aur Resources in June, 1989 on a property operated under the terms of a joint venture with Louvem Mining, a Quebec company controlled by Ste. Genevieve Resources Inc. of Montreal. As a geologist, I am proud to be able to describe Louvicourt as a geological discovery, as it was found by doing systematic deep diamond drilling based on a geological concept. The deposit is essentially blind from surface and lay undiscovered for the 10 years that the Louvem mine was in production just 2,000 feet away from its easternmost workings.

Coal and coal combustion byproducts are potential candidates for alternative resources of REEs (rare earth elements). The Illinois Basin is a major coal-producing district in the USA, but little work is available on speciation of REEs in the basin’s coals. In this study, a total number of 382 samples from known locations in the Illinois Basin coal beds were acquired, analyzed for their REE contents, and investigated for any spatial trends or chemical correlations. This study includes Springfield, Herrin, and Baker coal beds—the most heavily mined coals in the basin. An average coal ash from the basin contains 320 ppm REE, with Baker being the highest (407 ppm on average). However, the distribution of REEs in the coal beds was laterally and vertically heterogeneous. A number of trends were found in the REE variations. The most important trend was the relationships of the REE concentrations and fractionations with the distance from the syndepositional sandstones. The total REE concentrations were higher in the proximity of the sandstones, likely due to the increased deposition of detrital material. This increase was the most significant in Springfield coal (90%) and least in Baker (6%). Those coal samples from the Springfield and Herrin coal beds distal from the syndepositional sandstones had a heavy to light REE ratio (H/L ratio) of 0.40 on average, whereas in proximal locations, the ratio was dropped to an average of 0.30. This trend was not significant in the Baker coal bed. In general, higher mineral matter in the coals was associated with higher REEs. In coal preparation plants, refuse rocks can have up to 360 ppmREE. However, the ashes of the cleanest coals had higher REE levels. Such ashes also have a higher ratio of heavy to light REEs. The highest REE concentrations were found in the claystones and the shales associated with the coal beds. Since the naturally occurring calcite, quartz, and pyrite samples were depleted in REEs, an association of REEs with the clay minerals can be suggested.

About 15,000 tonnes of zinc per year is present in the dusts and fumes produced in electric arc and BOS steelmaking, secondary copper refining and brass ingot making. Apart from the use of some copper-smelter fumes for zinc chemicals manufacture, zinc is not recovered and their disposal by landfill entails some risk of pollution by leach-out. The paper describes processes for recovering the zinc based on leaching and electrowinning. It was shown that the procedures normally employed for purifying zinc-electrolytes derived from primary sources are sometimes ineffective for secondary materials. Alternative process routes are proposed. Source materials were leached with acidic or alkaline reagents and solvent extraction was employed for electrolyte purification in addition to the usual techniques involving precipitation. Examples of integrated flow sheets for specific source materials are presented.
