Compressed air energy storage (CAES) has been initiated recently in West Germany with a 290 MW peaking-power facility utilizing twin cavities with volumes of 150,000 m3 each in the Huntorf salt dome (1). The implementation of CAES in several geologic media is being studied carefully in the United States (2); however, the use of cavities for CAES in salt domes or salt anticlines and the associated long-term stability of these cavities is the specific topic of this paper (3). The cavities represent an essential element in a CAES plant, and thus should be designed and operated to perform with "stability" over the planned life of the overall facility. As employed herein, cavity stability implies the extent to which an acceptable amount of cavity storage volume can be utilized with economic maintenance over the planned life of the overall facility. In this sense stability is relative to the planned use of a storage cavity. Figure 1. depicts the salt deposits of the United States (U.S.) (4). The Gulf Coast region includes the only confirmed salt dome basin in the U.S., although salt structures also exist as anticlines in the Paradox Basin of Utah and Colorado. Because of the relatively small amount of elevation change within the Gulf Coast, CAES in salt dome cavities appears to hold considerably more potential for energy storage in this region than more traditional "pumped hydro" systems.

TBM (TBM) mining in urban areas particularly under low overburden is a big challenge to design and excavate. During excavation of the Lucknow Metro project, in Uttar Pradesh, India the metro authorities encountered a design stretch where the TBM had to cross a sewer canal crossing of 15 m length under overburden of less than 1 m. Not only the stability of TBM due to uplift was of concern but also the stability of both banks. Most structures on the canal banks were non-engineered structures whose stability due to vibration of TBM was also of concern. Due to these risks, a method was proposed that met stability requirements for both ground and superstructures. The design was practical and cost effective to construct, and a collaborative exercise between the client, contractor and designer that took approximately 18 months to implement.

The present work aims to investigate the link between the oxidation and reduction of a weathered ilmenite concentrate in terms of phase transitions, microstructural changes, and element distribution. An ilmenite concentrate sample was pelletized and fired at 1000 °C in air, and as a result, the pellets were oxidized. The oxidized pellets were reduced by hydrogen gas at 1000 °C, which yielded almost complete metallization of the iron content of the pellets. The ore and the pellets were characterized in each step by XRD and SEM techniques, and distribution of elements and phases were investigated. Ilmenite, pseudorutile, and rutile were the main phases detected in the ilmenite concentrate sample, and depending on the weathering degree of the particles, different fractions of the phases were identified in their microstructure. It was found that irregular rutile grains dispersed in a pseudobrookite matrix is the morphology of the oxidized ilmenite phase. However, increasing microcracks and porosities were the only microstructural changes in the pseudorutile phase after oxidation in air. Studying the specific types of the ore particles and their oxidized and reduced forms indicated that the phase distribution in the ilmenite ore particles dictates the phase distribution in the oxidized and reduced ones. Results show that the morphology of the reduced particles includes a titanium (III) oxide matrix in which reduced iron globules are dispersed.

INTRODUCTION Rapidly increasing capacities of equipment used to load and handle material at the face require improved haulage equipment and better methods of transporting the mined materials or "muck" to the shaft or slope and out of the mine to the processing plant on the surface. Increasingly, those transportation demands are being satisfied with underground belt conveyors. Such con¬veyors provide the most readily available, most efficient, and most reliable method of carrying materials in a continuous and rapid flow from the face loading equip¬ment to the surface plant. Almost universally, belt con¬veyors are used in coal mines and those nonmetallic and metallic mines operating in relatively flat bedded deposits. Belt conveyors are available in a wide range of capacities, mainly limited by belt width, belt speed, and weight of the material to be transported. They can be used on the level, on grades, on the surface, or under¬ground. They provide a rapid and constant flow of material, transporting the material as quickly as it is mined. Length of belt conveyors is almost unlimited. Where the haulage distance exceeds the practical capacity of a single conveyor unit, two or more conveyors can be used in series. Single conveyors more than 1.6 km (1.0 mile) long are common; multiple-unit conveyors in series operation are transporting materials over distances exceeding 16.1 km (10 miles). Depending upon mate¬rials being transported, job conditions, cost of the terrain being spanned, and alternative haulage methods avail¬able, conveyors can be conceivably economical for even greater distances. Table 1 lists maximum belt speeds recommended for most materials, relating belt speeds to belt widths. Table 2 lists capacities of typical conveyors of various widths and speeds, transporting commonly mined mate¬rials of various weights. ADVANTAGES OF CONVEYOR SYSTEMS For several years after their initial introduction, belt conveyors were available only with rigid side frames or a supporting structure of steel and concrete. That con¬struction limited underground applications, due to the cost and relative inconvenience of extending or retract¬ing the belt conveyor in the confined underground environment. However, during the last 20 years, wire-¬rope side-frame belt conveyors, as shown in Fig. 1, have become widely used in underground applications. Even wider use can be anticipated with their application to the fast movement of materials in surface mining operations. Advantages of the wire-rope side-frame belt con¬veyors were realized first in panel or section belt haulage in coal mines. Soon afterward, use of those conveyors was extended to gathering and main-line haulage. The mobility of the wire-rope side-frame conveyor is the principal reason for its success. The conveyor can be extended, retracted, dismantled, moved, and reassembled easily, even in relatively confined under¬ground spaces. The intermediate structure consists of rope support stands, wire-rope side frames, wire-rope tie-off stands, and the necessary carrying idlers and return idlers. An important and very attractive feature is the ability to suspend the conveyor from the roof in an underground mine, as shown in Fig. 2, leaving more room for improved housekeeping and allowing passage of face-service equipment, haulage vehicles, and other mining equipment. The conveyor's open construction allows quick and easy visual inspection of its com¬ponents for failures or malfunctions; it also facilitates checking and correcting conveyor-belt alignment. Other advantages contributing to the attractiveness and widespread application of wire-rope side-frame conveyors in main-line, slope, and surface installations include: lower capital costs, lower installation costs, lower maintenance costs, reduced impact on idlers and belting, reduced spillage and minimal cleanup, improved conformation to undulating terrain or mine bottoms, and the ability to span most obstacles without heavy structural support. CONVEYOR CLASSIFICATIONS Underground belt conveyors are classified normally according to their function. Generally, conveyors are classified into one of four main categories: 1) Panel or section conveyors normally receive the material to be transported directly from the face-haulage equipment. 2) Gathering conveyors are secondary haulage units that usually receive material from two or more panel conveyors. 3) Main-line conveyors transport all the material mined in the underground operations to the slope or shaft. Normally, they receive the material from two or more gathering conveyors. 4) Slope conveyors generally operate in tandem with the main-line conveyor, providing continuous Table 1. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has investigated methods for extracting metals from a variety of arsenic-containing smelter flue dusts. One proposed flowsheet includes a sulfuric acid leach, a cooling step to precipitate hydrated copper sulfate, and a reduction-precipitation of As2O3. Arsenic extractions greater than 90 pct were achieved, while copper extraction ranged from 50 to 85 pct under the conditions examined. Copper was removed from the leach solutions by crystallization followed by SO2 precipitation of arsenic which resulted in a 98 to 99.9 pct As2O3 product. Other metals, such as lead and zinc, were concentrated in the leach residue or in other byproduct streams for recovery of their valuable metal contents.

The paper describes the new design criteria and control strategies for multi-density dense medium separation (DMS) circuits. The role of the multi-density separation is discussed, and it is emphasized that for many processing problems -related to minerals and coals -it may be very important to perform two or more cuts at different densities in order to obtain a remarkable improvement in quality of products, process efficiency and economy. The two-density separation by dense medium cyclones was generally performed using two dense medium plants in sequence. In contrast to the former technology, the multi-density separation can now be performed by using a single medium circuit composed of different interconnected medium sumps. The sumps, one for each density, are fed with different medium streams selected according to their density, size composition and content in non-magnetic contaminant in such a way that the rheological properties of the media are optimized. This new technology is based on dynamic systems to density the medium, on the size-density segregation of the medium in the cyclones and separating devices and on accurate control systems for the density, viscosity and stability of the dense media of the different sumps. The present paper reports on the theoretical basis for the new, advanced medium circuits and on the systems for the control of the densities and of the rheological properties of the dense media. A typical circuit for a two-density separation is also described, and some industrial applications reported and discussed.

Between 2005 and 2021, surface mining haul trucks were involved in 54 fatal incidents in the United States [1]. Collision warning and avoidance systems (CXS) can help haul truck operators navigate their route safely. The evaluation of CXS object detection performance for surface mining haul trucks relies on the positional accuracy of the ground truth instrument. As part of a holistic approach, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) characterized the accuracy of a global navigation satellite system (GNSS) that serves as the ground truth instrument to determine object position and velocity in CXS object detection performance testing. We used precision surveying equipment to establish ground truth points for comparison with GNSS data collected for static positional measurements and reduced-scale straightline vehicle dynamic tests. We conducted these tests with real-time kinematics (RTK) and then satellite-based augmentation systems (SBAS). For the dynamic tests, we measured a distance error of 1.34 m (4.40 ft) using RTK and 1.50 m (4.92 ft) using an SBAS. This research will provide CXS manufacturers and CXS researchers a basis for evaluating the positional accuracy of CXS. Note that we did not evaluate any CXS in this experiment.

INTRODUCTION "On many projects, the tendency is to drop interest and support of the geological service as soon as it seems safe. That . . . is a short-sighted policy . . . It would be of further service perhaps to learn whether predictions were reasonably true to life." --C.P. Berkey, 1938 (3) This paper quantitatively compares predicted and encountered shear zone size and location and rock type for tunnels in the Colorado Mineral Belt. The Colarado Mineral Belt is composed of igneous formations with associated metamorphic rocks and faulting. As such, it represents the most complex of provinces for at-grade predictions (27). Shear zone and rock type data are assumed to be statistically homogeneous because of the common geology of the seven tunnels. It is often felt by geologists and engineers that the amount of information from which a geological model is created is so low that any statistical inferences are unstable. In other words, the addition of new data may drastically alter the means and variances suggested by the model. Therefore, predictions are rarely couched in quantitative statistical terms but modified with "probably," "most likely" or "possibly." Comparison of predicted and encountered data from past geological models will permit the "probably's" to be quantified and distilled from the art of geological prediction. To date, two other studies of the validity of predictions have been made (26 and 16). Together, these two studies indicate that

Land use is the single most important element affecting the quality of our physical environment. .The minerals industry is a user of land and by its very nature, directly affects the landscape. Mining is a very visible activity. Producers of sand and gravel, crushed stone, clay, cement and lime operate right at the interface of the public. These production sites must be located near population centers. People are more travel oriented than years ago and through use of the expanded interstate highway system visit remote and little-visited areas. They visit communities on their vacations, places they enjoy on weekends and places they drive past on business trips. Although not residents of these localities, they have a strong interest in changes that occur in the landscape. As a result, the public has a greater concern today about mining and its use of land. From 1930 through 1971, the minerals industry used 3.65 million acres, or 0.16 percent of the land mass in the United States (4)2/. Of the total 3.65 million acres utilized, about 59 percent was accounted for by the area of excavation, 20 percent by disposal of overburden and other mine wastes from surface mining, 13 percent by disposal of mill or processing wastes, and 5 percent by disposal of underground mine wastes; the remaining 3 percent was subsided or disturbed as a result of underground workings. Nonmetallic minerals and fossil fuels each accounted for 43 percent of surface land used during 1930-71; the metal mining industry utilized the remaining 14 percent.

The increased use of sensors to facilitate automation has led to an explosion of data. As data sets grow in size, their use becomes more complex. Therefore, there is an incentive for reducing the size of the datasets, as long as this does not compromise information gleaning. With this in mind, this project explored basic aggregation as a viable alternative to amassing large amounts of data. The goal of the project was to determine if one would arrive at different conclusions had they analyzed aggregated data instead of raw data. In a mine, operational data is typically used for tracking process statistics, correlation between factors, autocorrelation and multivariate models (for a factor of choice). Therefore, this project compared results from such analyses when it was conducted with aggregated data (AD) with the results of analyses conducted with raw data (RD). The data consisted of one-minute-apart readings from a semiautogenous grinding (SAG) mill on the horsepower, feed rate (tons per hour), rotations per minute (rpm), noise, recycle (tons per hour), density (% solids) and bearing pressure (psig). This data was aggregated by averaging five and 10 continuous (one-minute) observations. Changes in statistical measures between the two approaches were typically within 5% of each other. Differences in correlation coefficients between RD and AD(s) were also within this range. Autocorrelations present within RD were preserved in AD, as long as the time lags were scaled for the amount of aggregation. Regression and neural network models were also developed for power consumption. The prediction performance of developed models was similar whether one used raw data or aggregated data. Overall, it appeared that aggregating the data based on 5- or 10-minute time spans would not have resulted in conclusions (from simple or complex analyses) being different from using raw data. In other words, whether one had used raw data or aggregated data, the conclusions would have been the same, suggesting that time domain aggregation, a common industry practice, is a good alternative to storing high-density data in this case.

As part of other work related to the studies of kinetic factors that influence the flotation of specific sulphide minerals, specially designed kinetic flotation experiments at Cominco included work done on -65 + 100 mesh and -100 + 150 mesh, high purity galena. The flotation collector used was sodium isopropyl xanthate containing radioactive sulphur-35. Radiation monitoring of the galena fractions from stage flotation tests indicated that the adsorbed radioactive xanthate was uniformly distributed among the floated fractions and the non-floated, or residual portion of the galena. This anomalous behaviour could not be correlated to changes in Seebeck coefficients, to lattice distortions, or to the nature of the mineral surface as revealed by infrared spectroscopy and by microscopic measurements.

Most of the production of copper in the United States comes from a few large companies. Often overlooked, however, are the more numerous small mining operations, which collectively produce a significant portion of the nation's copper. The objective of this paper is to describe the operations of a small mining company - Ranchers Exploration and Development Corporation - how it views its place in this industry of giants, how it exploits the advantages offered by its relatively small size, and how it protects itself from the hazards being small introduces. Environment is, of course, a critical factor for such a company because it does not have the resources which help large companies weather periods of financial stress. Ideally, this environment is characterized by a heal thy economy, strong product demand, relatively stable prices , adequate grades and tonnages of ore commensurate with depth and over-burden, ready access to utilities, a dependable labor pool, and suitable technical "know how". When the environment is right, properties which were previously uneconomical to operate attract the attention of companies whose primary interest is a return on investment commensurate with risk over a reasonable period of time. Naturally, the amount of the investment and the duration of operation determines the size of the company which would be interested in such a venture. Such is the case with Ranchers Bluebird Mine at Miami, Arizona - a small property operated by a small company in a favorable economic environment.

Vast deposits of lignite occur in the Gulf Coast states and northern plain states. Lignite resources are cited to be over 43 billion tons in the Gulf Coast states. An additional resource of 16 billion tons are reported in North Dakota (Jackson, Smith, 1981). All lignite in the U.S. is mined at present by the open pit method. Draglines and scrapers are primarily used to remove the overburden. Bucket-wheel excavators are also being considered for new mines in the planning stages. Lignite seams are mined using front-end loaders, shovels and trucks, or Easi-miners. The depositional environment of lignite is weak sedimentary soils and rock. Ground water is often encountered within the mining depth. Surface water resulting from heavy rainfall or snow melt contributes to the problems of mining. Mining depths of up to 60 m (200 ft) are under consideration. Draglines exert additional loads on the highwalls and spoil piles. The combination of any number of these factors may cause instability of the slopes. Bearing pressure, trafficability, and settlement can also be a problem for excavation and loading equipment.

The percentage depletion deduction on Federal Income Tax Returns under the provisions of the 1939 Internal Revenue Code and of Sections 611 to Section 615, inclusive, of the revenue act of 1954, have created innumerable administrative difficulties, and a new interpretation of "gross income from the property" in that the Courts have expanded the ideas of what constitutes "gross income from the property" to a degree unheard of and unthought of prior to the enactment of these two codes. Originally, under the Revenue Acts of 1917, 1918, and 1920 depletion was allowable, based upon mine valuations as of March 1, 1913; if the mine was owned prior to March 1, 1913; upon cost, as of the date of acquisition if purchased subsequent to March 1, 1913; and upon a "discovery" basis if the mine was discovered after March 1, 1913, The "jab" for mine valuations as of March 1, 1913 and for discovery valuations and depletion was not as bad as it has been made out to be. Thousands of valuations and estimates of reserves were made and agreed upon between taxpayers and Internal Revenue Service engineers and as the years went on the answers have been found to be "reasonable." However, human nature being what it is each case was a battle of wits - of a sort - and many resulted in severe differences of opinion and litigation. As tax rates increased the situation was not bettered. I could talk for several hours on this phase of depletion but it is all past now andwould not give any real service or better understanding of the matter.

Analytical costs are a major part of exploration programs in developing nations which may lack adequate laboratories. Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS), a variant of atomic emission spectroscopy, can reduce exploration analytical costs and can provide the analytical results in <1minute. CPI is now marketing battery-powered, backpack mounted analyzers, using LIBS to analyze for many elements of interest to the explorationist. LIBS is well suited to the analysis of elements in industrial minerals. Limits of detection in ppm for some of these are: Li-1, Be-2, Na-100,B-33, Sr-10, Ba-300, Cs-1, K-500, Fe-500, Mg-500, andTi-500.

This paper outlines the methodology and results pertaining to the simulation of the U.S. coal industry in the context of an integrated, time-dynamic model of Long-Range Energy Developments and Supplies (LORENDAS). By way of background we will present first an overview of the overall LORENDAS model structure. We will, then, outline the characteristics of the formulation and data used for the representation of the U.S. coal industry. Finally, a series of model results will be reviewed, with particular emphasis on the long term projections of coal production and distribution under different basic economic and/or political scenarios.

Cationic flotation of quartz is currently utilized for the concentration of iron ores and for the cleaning of phosphate concentrates. The present work deals with depression of quartz in the presence of aluminum ions during cationic flotation. It was established-that aluminum ions depress the flotation of quartz with an amine, especially under neutral and very slightly alkaline conditions. Studies of adsorption of Al ions on the quartz surface as a function of pH correlated with depression of this mineral with an amine as collector. The presence of Al ions also enhanced the depressant action of corn starch on quartz The sodium salt of ethylenediaminotetra-acetic(EDTA) was found to be an effective complexing agent to supress the depression caused by aluminum ions.

The DC Water and Sewer Authority's Long Term Control Plan includes tunnels, sewer separation, pumping station rehabilitation and green infrastructure to reduce combined sewer overflow (CSO) discharges to the District waterways. The Northeast Boundary Tunnel is a deep, large sewer tunnel that will reduce CSO discharges; signifi- cantly mitigate known chronic flooding in the Northeast Boundary drainage area and improve the water quality of the Anacostia River. This paper presents the unique combination of Owner and Contractor perspectives of the entire Project from conception through procurement, execution, and contract management, providing lesson learned, chal- lenges encountered, and solutions implemented to deliver the Project successfully.

Mining operations adopt a variety of measures to combat dust underground. These include ventilation systems, water sprays, physical barriers, and personal protective equipment (PPE). Respirators are a class of PPE that can provide clean particulate- free air to the users. Powered Air-Purifying Respirators (PAPRs), used commonly in medical and other sectors, are not prevalent in the mining industry. PAPRs use P100 filters that have 99.97% dust capture efficiency. We present our results from computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations performed to understand the impact of a PAPR on airflow and dust particle concentration in the vicinity of a miner. These results show that donning PAPRs can lower the miners’ exposure to respirable coal dust in their workplace.

The minerals industry trend toward very flotation machines, exceeding 10 m3, began in the late 1960&apos;s and responds to the continuing desire to achieve better plant economics through improved plant floor-space utilization, power requirements, and operational /maintenance manpower heeds. In general, as process design tonnage increases, the benefits of the larger flotation machine becomes more evident. The development of the larger flotation machine can be distingushed from earlier, smaller, machines in demanding a rational "scale-up" procedure to guide the basic design, thereby producing a machine prototype capable of satisfactory-operational evaluation at minimum cost. Proven flotation machine "hydrodynamic" scale-up consideration, successfully applied in the development of both the WEMCO No. 164 (28.3 m3) and No. 190 (42.5 m3) machine will be reviewed, and the resulting economic benefits of large flotation machines in high tonnage applications will be summarized.
