From mine to mill, the 3D characterization of particles ranging in size from meters to micrometers is now possible. A brief review of X-ray tomography for mineral processing is given with recent advances considered, such as high-speed scanning and image analysis procedures to describe important particle properties, including size, shape and composition. Considering these new 3D characterization tools, applications in mineral processing are discussed for high-resolution X-ray microtomography (HRXMT) laboratory analysis of particles ranging from 20 mm to 5 μm, with a voxel resolution of about 1 μm, including (1) multiphase particle characterization by HRXMT and comparison with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), (2) particle damage state as a result of blasting/comminution, (3) liberation characterization to describe expected separation efficiency, (4) exposed grain surface area analysis to explain the flotation of locked particles, and (5) floc size, shape and water content for polymer-induced flocculation. Finally, applications in mineral processing for plant-site analysis using high-speed X-ray computed tomography (HSXCT) are examined, including, for example, coal washability analysis, the analysis of crusher plant products, and the analysis of pebble phosphate products from central Florida. Scanning rates on the order of 1 kg/min for particle sizes ranging from 150 mm to 1 mm are possible, with a voxel resolution of about 100 μm. For coarse particles smaller than 5 to 10 mm, high scanning rates of more than 300 t/h may be possible at a voxel resolution of about 1 mm.

Iron and manganese both are important ferrous metals, and they usually need to be extracted separately for better usage. Ferromanganese ore from the Yunnan Province of China was investigated by subjecting it to reduction roasting, leaching, magnetic separation, hydrometallurgical separation process, X-ray diffraction (XRD), electron probe micro-analysis (EPMA) and scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). It is noted that the ferromanganese ore contains valuable components or elements of 21.41 wt%Fe2O3 and 19.88 wt%MnO, which are 14.99% and 15.40% of the total of Fe and Mn, respectively, with a large amount of impurities comprising 33.00 wt% SiO2, 9.81%wt%Al2O3, etc. After roasting, microscopic examination showed the presence of haematite, magnetite, pyrolusite, psilomelane, hollandite, marcasite, pyrite, limonite, braunite and manganite, while XRD analysis showed that the magnetite content increases with the increase in roasting temperature, reflecting the increase in conversion of haematite to magnetite. Based on EPMAand SEM-EDS analysis, it was shown that the haematite and magnetite interface were the main Fe-bearing minerals; however, the dissemination of the two minerals, that is, haematite andmagnetite with the coexistence of Fe- and Mn-bearing minerals, will result in difficulty in effective separation of Fe and Mn. The effective roasting temperature and roasting time were 800 °C and 60 min, respectively, to avoid the formation of a composite oxide of MnxFe3-xO4 beyond 800 °C. The Fe recovery via roasting and magnetic separation only was 66.56%, whereas a combination of magnetic separation which ensued after the leaching process showed a recovery of 80.08% and 59.95% of Fe and Mn, respectively.

In this study, the effects of various extraction and stripping parameters, such as equilibrium pH (7.0, 8.5 and 10), extractant concentration (5, 10 and 20 volume %), organic-to-aqueous (O/A) ratio and stripping agent type and concentration were studied on chromium (VI) recovery from chromium electroplating rinse bath wastewater using Aliquat 336. Results showed that these parameters all had significant effects on chromium (VI) recovery. A pregnant strip solution from a chromium electroplating rinse bath wastewater with 33.4 g/L chromium content, suitable for sodium dichromate production, was generated by 20 vol. % Aliquat 336 in commercial kerosene. The O/A ratio was 1/4 and the equilibrium pH value was 0.87, the as-received pH value. The wastewater was treated with a two-stage countercurrent extraction process to produce a loaded organic phase, which was later stripped at the O/A ratio of two with a 4-M NaOH solution in a two-stage countercurrent stripping process using Taguchi?s optimization technique.

Silicon Valley Clean Water signed a progressive-design-build (PDB) contract with Barnard Bessac Joint Venture (BBJV) to design and construct the Gravity Pipeline tunnel in Redwood City, CA. Owner and Design-Builder teamed with designer Arup to provide a final product: 3.3 miles of 182 in. O.D. precast concrete segmentally lined tunnel with 10 ft. and 11 ft. I.D. Fiberglass Reinforced Polymer Mortar (FRPM) carrier pipe, complete with two FRPM Drop Structures. BBJV and Arup collaborated with SVCW to evaluate alternative design concepts, negotiate an agreeable price and reduce contingencies through a transparent estimating process, and deliver the project ahead of schedule.

"Field observations on replacements of 12-inch constant cross-section double disc cutters in Tuzla Wastewater Tunnel excavated by an EPB TBM with 3.151 mm excavation diameter excavating hard rock are summarized. Cutter life is correlated to rock’s uniaxial compressive strength and Cerchar abrasivity index, and TBM operational parameters. Number of cutter replacements, average cutter replacement rates and types of cutter damages are summarized. The relationships between cutter life and rock properties and TBM operational parameters are analyzed by single variable regression method. Detailed analysis between chainages 1+200 and 1+982 km indicates that average cutter consumption rate is 35.7 m3/replacement (4.6 m/replacement). Cerchar abrasivity index and uniaxial compressive strength does not indicate any meaningful relationship with cutter life. Penetration per revolution and field specific energy might be used for predicting lives of constant cross-section double disc cutters. However, additional data is required to generalize the findings of this study. INTRODUCTION Cutter life / replacement and/or consumption rates in terms of cutter cost and replacement time loses is one of the most important parameters affecting excavation performance of mechanical excavators, especially of TBMs used very widely and equipped with usually disc cutters. Predicting cutter cost is a very important task in especially feasibility stage of tunneling projects. Basic parameters affecting cutter life can be classified into 3 general groups as geological and geotechnical, excavation machine (TBM) related, and operational parameters (Bilgin et al., 2013). The geological and geotechnical parameters are the most dominant ones among them. The machine related parameters should be arranged in accordance with the expected geological and geotechnical conditions for the best TBM excavation performance and minimum cost."

Degussa Corporation's peroxide-assisted leaching (PAL) process was evaluated in the batch concentrate leach circuit at Hecla Mining Company's Republic Unit. The product leached in this batch circuit is a high grade gold-silver sulfide (predominately pyrite) flotation concentrate. The primary objectives of the test program were to determine the effects of dilute hydrogen peroxide addition on leaching kinetics, sodium cyanide consumption and precious metals recovery. The results of the testing demonstrated that using dilute hydrogen peroxide produced the following benefits: - 1. Batch leach time requirements decreased by 80%. - 2. Sodium cyanide consumption in concentrate leach reduced by 55%, which translated to an overall plant reduction of 20%. - 3. In the concentrate leach process, gold recovery was increased by 1 to 2%. Because of the excellent metallurgical results achieved with the use of dilute hydrogen peroxide, as well as an economic incentive, PAL has become standard practice in the concentrate leach circuit operation. A complete description of the Republic PAL plant evaluation and performance is provided in this paper. In addition, process chemistry considerations in regard to the role of hydrogen peroxide are discussed.

The pressure filtration behavior of dispersed and flocculated alumina slurries at high percent loadings is discussed with an objective to determine the effect of surfactant type and concentration on slurry properties. A high purity alumina powder was used as a model solid. Dispersion of the alumina was controlled by surfactants that are considered to act by electric and steric stabilizers. The effect of both the ionic and nonionic surfactants was investigated. Surface charge measurements of the slurries were carried out by electrokinetic sonic amplitude (ESA) method to understand the mechanisms. The effect of surfactant type and concentration on the kinetics of pressure filtration and final cake properties are discussed.

The guiding principle in developing this plan resulted from evaluating potential future markets for oil, the quantity of mineable oil shale and the optimum rate of production comensurate with market demand on the available oil from shale. In addition, the rate of production may depend upon a solution to the problems of scarcity of resources other than oil shale. The rate of production finally will tend to establish the choice of technologies with these limits. The principle components discussed will be: 1) The place of oil shale among the various energy sources and its relative adaptability for use in the area of major consumptive demand. 2) A recalculation of the reserves and their classification on the basis of quantity, grade - gallons per ton, - and physical characteristics principally thickness, overburden and depth.

DR iron') is a generic term for metallized product that results from the direct or solid state reduction of iron ore. In direct reduction, iron oxides are reduced to metallic iron in the solid state without an intermediate melting step. MIDREX ® Iron is the DR iron material produced in the MIDREX ® Direct Reduction Process. Except for some thermal and mechanical degradation, the external physical form of as-reduced DR iron is the same as the feed material. Chemically, oxygen associated with iron is removed leaving a very porous structure. Figure 1 is the scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the internal surface of a MIDREX Iron pellet obtained from a Swedish oxide pellet during reduction at 760 °C. Figure 2 is the SEM of a polished and etched cross-section through the same pellet showing the amount of intraparticle porosity. As a result of this high porosity, apparent density of DR iron is relatively low, typically a¬round 2 g/cm3, and specific surface is extremely high, typically around 1.0 m2/g or more. Both density and specific surface depend on the raw materi¬al and the operating conditions of the direct reduction plant. Normally, more than 97% of the available iron is reduced into metallic iron with the rest mainly in the form of wustite (FeO). During direct reduction, the gangue in the iron remains essentially unchanged. Removal of oxygen and the corre¬sponding reduction in weight result in a slightly higher percentage gangue in the product than in the raw material.

A new radioactive tracer method to measure airflow in inaccessible airways has been developed for situations when studies of the mine ventilation system are not possible using conventional flowmeters (anemometers). The new method has been tested in the ventilation laboratory at the University of Kentucky and in the Experimental Underground Coal Mine at the U.S. Bureau of Mines. This new tracer method has been utilized in leakage, dilution and flow velocity measurements in laboratory and field (mine) experiments.

The complex mineralogy of the Porgera resource has a pronounced effect on process selection for the recovery of refractory gold and silver. Intimate association of gold with pyrite necessitates a high degree of sulphur preoxidation in order to achieve acceptable levels of gold recovery. Acid pressure oxidation has been demonstrated to be the only commercially proven process capable of achieving the required level of pyrite oxidation. Gangue mineralization dictates preconcentration of the sulphides to limit the acid consuming capacity and carbon dioxide generation during oxidation. However, the relationship between concentrate sulphur grade and gold recovery to concentrate ultimately governs the optimum degree of sulphide preconcentration.

This paper describes the development of a life-of-mine schedule (LOM) for one of the world's largest known sedimentary copper-cobalt districts located in the Katanga Province, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). A particular feature of the Tenke Fungurume LOM schedule is the considerable number of pits/phases for scheduling, each competing to provide the best ore available to a capacity-constrained process facility. This paper discusses the LOM scheduling objectives and constraints, data preprocessing steps such as ore binning, block aggregation and clustering analysis as a scheduling aid, the mine scheduling approach and results and conclusions. In many instances, blasting exerts the dominant control over the economics and safety of excavation, where the materials involved are too hard and tough to be fragmented efficiently by other means. However, associated with the fragmentation process other effects very often result that are not desirable and may even be hazardous, such as fly rock, air blast, excessive overbreak, and damaging ground virbrations. It has always been the desire of those concerned with blasting to better control the forces involved so as to improve the breakage of materials, but at the same time reduce, or eliminate if possible, the unwanted side effects. Until the last decade or two, little was known of the phenomena concerned with blasting. However, since that time many investigators have studied blast mechanisms produced from both chemical and nuclear explosions, with the result that general concepts of the principles have been developed. But, in general, it is assumed that the energy from the explosion would be propagated spherically throughout the material, the latter of which for convenience of analyses is considered homogeneous and isotropic, i.e., the properties are the same in all directions, However, rocks are not isotropic as a rule, and evidence clearly indicates blasting forces rarely function uniformly or in spherical form as theorized.

"Canopy air curtain (CAC) technology has been developed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) for use on continuous miners and subsequently roof bolting machines in underground coal mines to protect operators of these machines from overexposure to respirator coal mine dust. The next logical progression is to develop a CAC for shuttle cars to protect operators from the same overexposures. NIOSH awarded a contract to Marshall University and J.H. Fletcher to develop the shuttle car CAC. NIOSH conducted laboratory testing to determine the dust control efficiency of the shuttle car CAC. Testing was conducted on two different cab configurations: a center drive similar to that on a Joy 10SC32AA cab model and an end drive similar to that on a Joy 10SC32AB cab model. Three different ventilation velocities were tested—0.61, 2.0, 4.3 m/s (120, 400, and 850 fpm). The lowest, 0.61 m/s (120 fpm), represented the ventilation velocity encountered during loading by the continuous miner, while the 4.3 m/s (850 fpm) velocity represented ventilation velocity airflow over the shuttle car while tramming against ventilation airflow. Test results showed an average of the dust control efficiencies ranging from 74–83% for 0.61 m/s (120 fpm), 39–43% for 2.0 m/s (400 fpm), and 6–16% for 4.3 m/s (850 fpm). Minor modifications to the shuttle car CAC design and placement improved the dust control efficiency to 51–55% for 4.3 m/s (850 fpm) with minimal impact on dust control efficiencies for lower ventilation velocities. These laboratory tests demonstrate that the newly developed shuttle car CAC has the potential to successfully protect shuttle car operators from coal mine respirable dust overexposures. INTRODUCTION The development of the canopy air curtain (CAC) dates back to the 1970s starting with the initial development of the CAC by the Donaldson Company, Inc. under contract from the U.S. Bureau of Mines [Krisko 1975]. This CAC was originally developed for continuous miner operators when continuous mining machines had cabs. The need for a CAC on the continuous miner was eliminated when the cab was removed from the machine design. However, CAC development progressed to include CAC designs for a roof bolting machine to protect roof bolters from respirable coal mine dust [Goodman and Organiscak 2002, Listak and Beck 2012, Reed et al. 2017]. This roof bolting machine CAC research continues to the present day."

Ground movements associated with high extraction underground coal mining, such as pillar retreat and longwall, are sometimes large enough to disrupt the ground water regime as well as damage buildings and other surface structures. A U.S. Department of Energy/Bureau of Mines- sponsored subsidence study currently underway at Kitt Energy Corporation's Kitt No. 1 Mine near Philippi (Barbour County), West Virginia has provided an opportunity to monitor the ground water response above a mine panel during both developmental and pillar retreat mining. The initial findings concerning ground water effects presented in this paper indicate that total extraction mining produced significant water level declines in deep-lying strata but had little effect on water bevels at shallower depths.

Boliden Aktiebolag, the prime base metal mining company of Sweden, annually treats some 11-12 million tons of sulphide ore in nine concentrators. Its first flotation plant was established in the early thirties for the complex Boliden ore. Since then, the number of mines and plants has gradually increased. Considerable effort has been devoted to the development of all phases of the technology of ore prospecting, mining, milling, smelting and refining. This has been necessary due to the complex and low-grade ores. The development of concentration has mainly been directed toward the arts of grinding and flotation. During the forties and fifties, open-stage fine crushing followed by two-stage grinding in rod and ball mills with cyclone classification was successfully introduced and used throughout the plants. The increasing cost of grinding media led to studies of an autogenous grinding technique as early as 1945. Basic test work commenced during the early fifties, with a. number of ores tested for pebble grinding. In 1956 a new pilot plant was built, with equipment installed for the continuous testing of pebble grinding and, later, for primary autogenous grinding of run-of-mine ore. The intensive test work showed that pebble grinding was feasible in almost all of the plants. At this early stage of testing, however, the merits of autogenous grinding could not be fully evaluated. As a. consequence the rod mill/ball mill grinding systems were converted to rod mill/pebble mill systems whereever possible. The most common experimental approach of studying one variable at a time while holding all others constant is extremely inefficient. Use of statistical methods enables engineers and scientists to obtain meaningful information with the fewest experiments, reducing cost and wasted effort. In particular, the Taguchi method can be more efficient than traditional full factorial experiment designs, as it can study more variables with fewer nuts, and it is more robust against process "noise." Taguchi designs are also simple to formulate and the results can be analyzed by simple PC spreadsheets. The role and benefits of using the Taguchi method in experiments to develop and optimize processes is discussed.

Lead ions originating from galena during processing of complex sulphide ores migrate to "cover" the surface of sphalerite and iron sulphide mineral particles, and cause poor selectivity in differential flotation. Generally in sulphide ore processing, the lead-activated minerals float in the Cu/Pb rougher circuit. Subsequently, surface lead complicates the zinc flotation circuit by lowering the concentrate grade due to the co-flotation of lead-activated iron sulphide minerals. The effect of lead in the differential flotation of sphalerite from Cu-Pb-Zn and Pb-Zn ores is discussed. Plant and laboratory test data are interpreted by determining the surface composition of individual grains of sphalerite and iron sulphide particles using two surface analytical techniques, Laser Ionization Mass Spectrometer (LIMS) and Time of Flight-Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometer (TOF-SIMS). Cationic and anionic species on the surface were analyzed to elucidate the phenomena.

Acid ferric sulfate solution has been used for heap and dump leaching of low-grade chalcopyrite ores and is being considered as a possible lixiviant for the hydrometallurgical processing of copper sulfide concentrates. For many years, researchers have attempted to explain the leaching behavior of chalcopyrite, since the reaction rate kinetics are extremely slow and seem to be significantly influenced by the nature of the reaction product. A summary of conclusions drawn from reported literature on chalcopyrite leaching is found in the paper by Munoz, Miller, and Wadsworth(1) and more recently by Dutrizac.(2) Lowe(3) and Jones and Peters (4) attributed rate control to a surface reaction. Linge,(5) Dutrizac,(6) Bauer,(7) and researchers at the University of Utah(1,8) reported that the reaction rate is limited by transport in the chalcopyrite lattice or through the elemental sulfur reaction product layer. Munoz et al.(1) presented a model, derived from the Wagner theory of oxidation, which is based on the formation of a protective sulfur layer with rate control by electron transport through the insulating sulfur layer. "Hard rock mines move large volumes of material. But the conveyors essential to this movement suffer lots of problems, including carryback, spillage, dust, and belt wander. Many of these issues are created at the transfer points where the belts are loaded. This presentation will start with an overview of the latest transfer point systems that incorporate safety and serviceability by design. It will then report on recent projects. One project is the Conveyor B Transfer at the Coeur Rochester silver mine near Lovelock, Nevada. Here performance was improved with the installation of belt support cradles, engineered chute walls with external wear liner, and a compact dust collector. A second project is the improvement of belt support idlers and skirtboard sealing in a long loading zone of a conveyor under the concentrator at an Arizona copper mine. THE IMPORTANCE OF TRANSFER POINTS Conveyors are essential in mine material handling. Their performance will often make the difference in mine productivity and profitability. A key to conveyor performance are the transfer points where the conveyor belt is loaded and discharges. At these transfer points, many of the problems encountered with the conveyor system are created. The problems that arise at the transfer stations include off-center and segregated loading, mistracking, blockages and plugging. And there are a variety of problems originating with fugitive material—cargo released in the form of carryback, spillage, or airborne dust—that are created or exacerbated in the transfer points. These fugitive materials turn into other conveyor-related problems, including shortened component life, unplanned outages for conveyor maintenance, unexpectedly high labor costs for maintenance and cleanup, worker health and safety problems, and issues with community relations. As estimate attributed to the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) notes that 85 percent of conveyor maintenance is a result of fugitive material at conveyor transfer points. TECHNOLOGIES TO IMPROVE TRANSFER POINTS A number of techniques to improve the performance of conveyor transfer points have been developed. They include: • Absorbing impact, to prevent damage to belt, belt support systems, and conveyor structure, and reduce spillage caused by the impact energy arising from long material drops or large lumps of material loaded onto the receiving belt. • Stabilizing the belt line, to eliminate sag that allows spillage and encourages material entrapment that can damage the belt. • Protecting the skirtboard seals, by sheltering the sealing strips from the mass of cargo pushing material toward the edges of the belt. • Using self-adjusting, multiple-barrier edge seals, to keep material on the belt by providing long-lived seal efficiency with minimum maintenance requirements. • Controlling and centering the belt’s path, to eliminate belt wander and the spillage and damage it can cause. • Allowing dust to settle, through the incorporation of chutework that provides expanded stilling zone and the use of dust curtains at the points where the belt enters and exits the transfer. • Adding supplemental dust control systems, through the installation of systems for passive dust gathering, water-based dust suppression, and/or active dust collection."
