"A supply of sustainably sourced rare earth elements (REEs) is critical for several high-tech industries, renewable energy technologies, and defense applications. Recent studies have shown that REEs exist in coal and coal combustion byproducts at elevated concentrations and in quantities that could meet domestic demand. Despite these promising findings, declines in rare earth prices, volatile commodity markets, and challenging geo-metallurgical conditions have jeopardized this potentially valuable REE resource. While the dilute REE concentrations inherently necessitate low-cost separation technologies, the ultimately operating cost threshold for economic extraction must be based on commodity price projections and market demand. In this paper, the micro-pricing principle is used to develop a rigorous economic model assessing the inherent value of REEs in coal materials. This model is based upon basket pricing of individual elemental oxides, and elemental distributions of coal samples from various basins. These results may be used to assess the economic viability of potential REE concentration and refining technologies INTRODUCTION Recent efforts by US Department of Energy (DOE) and the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) have suggested that rare earth elements (REEs) may exist in coal and coal byproducts at concentrations suitable for economic extraction and processing. While the knowledge of REE occurrence in coal material dates back over 50 years, recent supply restrictions and material criticality considerations have prompted a national interest to establish a sustainable domestic supply of REEs. REEs are not “rare” in the sense of crustal abundance; however, few natural processes lead to concentrated ore deposits. As a result, the elevated concentrations found in coal material may provide a potentially promising resource for these materials. While the term “rare earths” is often used to describe a singular concept, the 15 rare earth elements actually have varying and sometimes contrasting scarcity and cost profiles. Various authors have proposed classification systems to provide information on REE criticality (e.g. Seredin and Dai, 2012, Zhang et al., 2015). The most straightforward classification is provided on the basis of geochemistry with designations for “light”, “medium” and “heavy” rare earths. Light rare earths (those to the left of the periodic table: Ce, Pr, Nd, and Sm) tend to be more common and less valuable when compared to their medium (Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, and Y) and heavy (Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu) counterparts. While light rare earths are often found in traditional ore deposits at economic concentrations, the heavier rare earths are almost exclusively found as ion-absorbed clays (Seredin and Dai, 2012)."

The microstructures and kinetics of a rich iron ore ( TFe = 65.84%) of Na Rua mine, Vietnam, used for the iron production were investigated in this study. Thermal behaviors of iron ores were well-examined by heating microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and differential thermal analysis. After being pelletized and then oxidatively fired at 500–1200 °C for 2 h, the pellets fired at 1200 °C (P1200) displayed a hard and dense structure with a decent compressive strength of 317.9 kg/pellet whereas those fired at 500 °C (P500) had a soft and spongy structure. The reduction of iron pellets conducted in a flow of a 60–100% CO2/ Ar gas mixture at 900–1100 °C showed significantly higher efficiency than the reduction using coal. The spongy pellets showed superior performance for the reduction in the CO/Ar gas mixture compared to the dense ones, compatible with the production of sponge iron. When mixed with an amount of coal, P1200 designed for iron production in the blast furnace demonstrated an impressive reduction activity compared to P500 and previous studies. The kinetics of pellet reduction was determined by the diffusion of substances through the solid product layers having the mathematical model of 1 − 2 3 f − (1 − f )2∕3 = kt . The microstructures of pellets during the oxidative firing and reduction were also examined by X-ray diffractometry; scanning electronic microscopy; energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy; and Brunauer, Emmet, and Teller method.

Jetti Resources has developed a catalyst which overcomes the passivation of primary sulfides, enhancing the heap leach recovery of copper from chalcopyrite. It is important to emphasize that heap leaching of copper sulfides, whether with or without the Jetti catalyst, is a biooxidative process. We have demonstrated the efficacy of Jetti’s technology in bioreactors, with a chalcopyrite-dominant porphyry ore. In the presence of Jetti’s technology, optimal bioleaching conditions significantly increase copper extraction by 2.6 times that of the baseline.

The Grasberg porphyry copper-gold deposit of P.T. Freeport Indonesia, Co. is located in the Jayawijaya Mountains of Irian Jaya, Indonesia approximately six km west northwest of Puncak Jaya, the highest point on the island of New Guinea. Disseminated mineralization is confined to the Grasberg intrusive complex, a multiphase intrusion of dioritic to monzonitic composition which intruded tightly folded carbonate rocks of the Tertiary Faumai and Ainod formations. The high tonnage and grade of the deposit (1 X 109 tonnes at 1.4 % copper and 1. 8 ppm gold) appear to result from a succession of coincident intrusive and mineralizing events about three million years ago. This paper will focus on the history and character of these events.

"A 2nd generation roof bolter canopy air curtain (CAC) design was tested by National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) at a Midwestern underground coal mine. During the study, the roof bolter never operated downwind of the continuous miner. Using a combination of personal Data Rams (pDR) and gravimetric samplers, the dust control efficiency of the roof bolter CAC was ascertained. Performance evaluation was determined using three methods: (1) comparing roof bolter operator concentrations underneath the CAC to roof bolter concentrations outside the CAC, (2) comparing roof bolter operator concentrations underneath the CAC to the concentrations at the rear of the bolter, and finally, (3) using the gravimetric data directly underneath the CAC to correct roof bolter operator concentrations underneath the CAC and comparing them to the concentrations at the rear of the bolter. Method 1 dust control efficiencies ranged from -53.9% to 60.4%. Method 2 efficiencies ranged from -150.5% to 52.2%, and Method 3 efficiencies ranged from 40.7% to 91%. Reasons for negative and low dust control efficiencies are provided in this paper and include: incorrect sampling locations, large distance between CAC and operator, and contamination of intake air from line curtain. Low dust concentrations encountered during the testing made it difficult to discern whether differences in concentrations were due to the CAC or due to variances inherent in experimental dust measurement. However, the analyses, especially the Method 3 analysis, show that the CAC can be an effective dust control device. INTRODUCTION Canopy air curtains (CAC) have been shown to be an effective respirable coal mine dust control for roof bolters in a laboratory setting with dust control efficiencies ranging from 14% up to 75% [Goodman and Organiscak 2001, Listak and Beck 2012, Reed et al. 2017]. Unfortunately, there is limited information on their effectiveness for controlling respirable coal mine dust in the field. On continuous miners, CAC dust control efficiencies ranged from 23% to 69% [Krisko 1975]. Two underground tests of the CAC on roof bolters demonstrated dust control efficiencies of 35% and 53% [Listak and Beck 2012] before problems occurred with operation of the CAC. Since the implementation of the new respirable coal mine dust limit from 2.0 mg/m3 to 1.5 mg/m3 (Code of Federal Regulations, 30 CFR 70.100, 2015), roof bolter CACs are becoming more commonplace in underground coal mines as a dust control tool to prevent roof bolter operator overexposure to respirable coal mine dust. J.H. Fletcher & Co. has been instrumental in delivering an effective design which incorporates the filter, blower, and canopy plenum seamlessly into the design of the roof bolter, resulting in a successful operational roof bolter CAC."

As a clean and renewable energy carrier, hydrogen is an important component of most alternative energy portfolios. Hydrogen combines very high energy content by weight with excellent environmental attributes. Since hydrogen reacts with oxygen to produce only water with release of energy, it can be used to power fuel cells, combustion engines, and turbines, without production of greenhouse gases at point of use. However, because of its low volumetric density, storing pure hydrogen is impractical. Thus implementation of hydrogen technologies requires materials that can safely store and release large amounts of hydrogen (1,2). In recent years, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and other governmental agencies around the world sponsored extensive research on hydrogen storage materials, including those based on boron. These efforts have resulted in significant advances in hydrogen storage technologies. Boron materials stand out as leading candidates for hydrogen storage among the many options investigated. Combining excellent hydrogen densities, release rates, and safety characteristics, some boron materials can hold substantially more hydrogen by weight and volume than even pure liquid hydrogen (3-5).

Laboratory tests were conducted to evaluate the silica collection efficiency of flooded-bed scrubbers with six different filter panel designs and at two operating velocities. Test results indicated that reductions in filter density negatively impacted respirable dust collection. Silica collection efficiency for the least dense filter was as much as 33 % lower than the collection efficiency of the densest filter. At the low operating velocity, the least dense filter allowed over 40% of the respirable silica dust in the scrubber intake air to pass through the unit, where it would be discharged back into the mine environment. Operation of the scrubber at the higher test air velocity increased silica collection efficiency, regardless of the filter panel tested. The density of the filter panels also impacted the quantity of air that is moved through the scrubber, with higher density filters reducing scrubber airflow. For each filter, the relationship between dust collection efficiency and air moving capacity must be considered to determine overall effectiveness for specific mine applications.

Flocculation is an important step in the treatment of coal preparation waste waters. The effects of polymer charge and molecular weight and solution pH and ionic strength on the adsorption and flocculation characteristics of a series of polymeric flocculants on some typical waste water constituents have been studied experimentally. The results indicate that the nature and extent of flocculation are strongly system-dependent. For the case of coal, both adsorption and flocculation behavior can be correlated with the polymer conformation in solution. For the mineral constituents, on the other hand, adsorption and flocculation depend also on the surface properties of the solid.

The current study investigates sericite clay as an alternative source of potash and alumina. The alumina and potash content in the sericite is approximately 35 and 10%, respectively, compared with 50–55% in bauxite ore. Muscovite and illite phases are stable, and direct leaching is found to be ineffective. Here, planetary ball milling was performed, which provided dissociation of stable phases to relatively reactive phases. The milling led to a five-fold increase in the surface area, resulting in enhanced leaching kinetics even at low acid concentration. The statistical design obtained optimal conditions of 8 h of milling followed by leaching in 1.73 M HCl at 75 °C, yielding 82% alumina extraction in precipitate with 85% purity in γ-alumina form and 63% potassium dissolution in sylvinite phase. The yield of the precipitate was ~65–68%, and the acid leach residue contained primarily silica.

"Canopy air curtains on roof bolting machines have been proven to protect miners from respirable dust, preventing their overexposure to dust. Another desired application for canopy air curtains is in the compartments of shuttle cars. The challenges faced in developing the design of canopy air curtains for shuttle cars include mine ventilation rates in tandem with the shuttle car tram speeds. The resulting cab airspeeds may exceed 182 m/min (600 fpm), as found in the present study conducted in a central Appalachian underground coal mine by U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers. Prior research and laboratory testing had indicated that successfully protecting a miner in high air velocities is difficult, because the clean air from the canopy air curtain is unable to penetrate through the high-velocity mine air. In this study, the dust concentrations to which a shuttle car operator was exposed were measured, and air velocities experienced by the operator were measured as well using a recording vane anemometer. The results indicate that the highest exposure to respirable dust, 2.22 mg/m3, occurred when the shuttle car was loading at the continuous miner, where the average airspeed was 48 m/min (157 fpm). While tramming, the operator was exposed to 0.77 mg/m3 of respirable dust with an average airspeed of 62 m/min (203 fpm). This study indicates that a canopy air curtain system can be designed to greatly reduce an operator’s exposure to respirable dust by providing clean air to the operator, as the majority of the operator’s dust exposure occurs in air velocities slower than 61 m/min (200 fpm). IntroductionThe U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) issued contract #200-2015-63485 to develop a canopy air curtain for coal mine shuttle cars with Marshall University and J.H. Fletcher & Co. (Salem, Begley and Ross, 2016). The proposed design maintains a design similar to that of a roof bolter canopy air curtain by providing filtered air through a blower over the operator. The plenum, which will provide uniform airflow over the operator, is anticipated to be built into the shuttle car canopy. One of the main interferences with a canopy air curtain is ventilation airflow perpendicular to the plenum airflow (Engel, Johnson and Raether, 1987). This ventilation airflow can shear the downward flow from the plenum, and this shear can reduce the effectiveness of the canopy air curtain by either disrupting the downward flow or allowing contaminated mine air into the canopy air curtain zone of protection."

Feldspar, a low-alumina, and abundantly available aluminosilicate source, is explored in this study to extract aluminum and potassium values. The sample comprises lamellar layers of microcline and albite with quartz containing 17.4% Al2O3, 9.67% K2O, and 66.3% SiO2. Mechanical (milling) and thermal (alkali and acid baking) activation are investigated, followed by HCl leaching. The milling treatment up to 6 h is inefficient in phase dissociation and results in ~ 40% Al and K dissolution. The alkali thermal treatment yielded 80% Al and 71% K extraction. Direct precipitation of the dissolved Al and Si values yielded alumina purity of ~ 29%, and silica gelation separated SiO2 and improved alumina product (94% purity, 71% recovery). Acid baking yielded 98% pure alumina precipitate; however, Al and K extraction were limited to ~ 45% and 65%, respectively. The microwave-assisted alkali treatment was optimal with 800 W and 10 min processing conditions yielding 80% Al and 71% K recovery with 2.26 kWh/kg alumina of thermal energy consumption. The Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 had far reaching effects upon many aspects of mining, ventilation being no exception. In this paper, good ventilation procedures are briefly reviewed, and attention is focused on the changes brought about by the new Act. By way of illustration the ventilation system for a typical Pittsburgh Block system is developed and the requirements of the fan determined. This is then solved by an available computer program, and the application is evaluated. Figure 1 represents a projected system for a coal property 1 by 3 miles in plan at a depth of 1000 feet with a coal thickness of 6 feet and desired daily tonnage of approximately 7200 tons on a two-shift basis. Only one half of the mine is shown (north area) with a mirror image mining arrangement to be developed concurrently for the south area. Six working units are projected, three in each area, one on pillar extraction, another developing panel entries and a third on main entry development. A two-split system is used for each working section so that the continuous miner and bolting crews each have a separate split of air, and no equipment need pass through a line brattice. The old requirement of 6000 cfm at the last open crosscut has been increased to 9000 cfm, and for the first time a minimum quantity (3000 cfm) is stipulated at the face thus requiring either line brattice or an auxiliary fan. With the respirable dust requirement limited to 3 mg/m3, the use of a blower system is precluded and exhaust systems are virtually the only choice. Maintaining the line brattice within 10 feet of the working face at all times as required by the new law has a definite effect on the mining cycle and is most difficult at best. The E-Power Pipe technology was originally developed for the trenchless installation of protective pipes and pipelines of 10" to 28" diameter, over long distances of more than 4,000 ft. The twostage process combines elements from Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) and microtunnelling technology. A microtunnelling boring machine (MTBM) excavates the borehole using a specially designed, temporary jacking pipe. A Rack & Pinion jacking frame pushes the equipment during the pilot bore and pulls in the prefabricated pipe string in a second step. The slurry microtunnelling machine is equipped with a jet pump, creating the so-called AVNS machine type. A new generation of small hard rock cutting wheels complements this considerable achievement for the tunnelling industry

For many years tin mining in Bolivia has been very important to the economy of the country. In recent years the tin content of the ore reserves has been steadily declining. An improvement in concentration efficiency is highly desirable in order to increase productivity from the present-low-grade mine ores and to allow retreatment of the many millions of tons of tailings from past operations, some of which equal the present ores in tin content. A number of investigators have been or at present are working on various phases or approaches to the problem. Gravity concentration is used in Bolivia today as it has been in the past to recover tin minerals from the mine ores. An objective of the work reported in this paper was to examine the possibility of treating present low-grade ores and sink-float tailings products, at a relatively coarse grind, in order to produce a higher grade feed material to the present gravity concentration plants. The possibility of using heavy liquids in cyclones to treat large tonnages with a minimum of outlay presented itself and is of particular interest since appropriate heavy liquids are available and with physical properties which lend themselves to simple recovery methods. Tests were carried out using a closed circuit laboratory cyclone assembly. It was desirable to determine the value of using the SG50 concept and Tromp curves for analyzing the cyclone concentration test results. The effects of entrained water on the behavior of ore particles in the cyclone were examined.

Anthracite is widely known as a domestic or space heating fuel. The prevailing market ratio of domestic to industrial consumption was about 80 to 20 up until 1950. Since then it has been shifting until now the ratio index is about 50/50, exclusive of overseas export. Despite a declining domestic space heating market, the demand for industrial anthracite remains good. However, as a result of stringent air pollution regulations, there is a renewed interest in this low sulphur coal which cannot smoke under any conditions. Anthracite serves other important industries such as power generating, metallurgical, cement, ceramic, chemical, water sewage and industrial wastes filtration. Anthracite is an excellent natural source of carbon and may be utilized in many processes.

For more than a decade the tunneling industry has explored the potential and benefits of macro synthetic fiber (MSF) reinforced concrete solutions for precast tunnel segments. Parallel to industry investigations, academic research is being undertaken to better understand this material when subjected to the typical loads expected during mechanized tunneling. This paper investigates the performance of MSF reinforced precast concrete tunnel segments by means of an experimental program comprising testing of full-scale tunnel segments. The presentation of the satisfactory results of the experimental testing regime will be complemented by a brief case history from a successfully executed project—an America’s First.

The aim of this study was to investigate desulfurization and de-ashing of a mixture of subbituminous coal and gangue minerals by the agglomeration method. For this purpose, experimental studies were conducted on a mixture containing subbituminous coal, pyrite, quartz and calcite. The effects of some parameters that markedly influence the effectiveness of selective oil agglomeration, such as solid concentration, pH, bridging liquid type and concentration, and depressant type and amount, were investigated. Agglomeration results showed that the usage of various depressants (Na2SiO3, FeCI3, corn starch, wheat starch) in the agglomeration medium has a positive effect on the reduction of ash and total sulfur content of agglomerates. It was found that an agglomerate product containing 3.03% total sulfur and 25.01% ash with a total sulfur reduction of 56.71% was obtained from a feed that contained 7% total sulfur and 43.58% ash when FeCI3 was used in the agglomeration medium. Mention of any company or product does not constitute endorsement by NIOSH. ABSTRACT Proximity detection systems (PDSs) for mobile machines have the potential to decrease injuries and fatalities. Early adopters of the technology have identified some challenges, which presents an opportunity to explore and improve the integration of mobile PDSs in underground coal mines. The current study applied the task-technology fit framework to investigate the fit between mobile PDS technology and mining relative to health and safety, from the perspective of leaders at two coal mines. Quantitative results from the study show that mine leaders evaluated mobile PDS favorably for training and ease of use, system feedback, user authorization and experience, and less favorably for safety, compatibility, task completion, and reliability. Qualitative results reveal specific task, mine, and system characteristics that may have influenced leaders' evaluations. The study includes considerations for safe technology integration. INTRODUCTION Striking, pinning, and crushing accidents related to mobile machines continue to be a major concern in underground coal mining. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) linked 22 of the 75 underground mine fatalities reported between 2011 and 2015 to power haulage [1]. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) asserts that proximity detection systems for mobile machines (mobile PDSs) could help to prevent these types of fatal injuries [2]. Mobile PDSs use a collision avoidance technology that allows the mine to establish hazard zones and employ electromagnetic sensors to detect workers equipped with a miner-wearable component (MWC) working near these mining machines. The authors characterize a mobile PDS as an automated technology, because—in line with Lee & See’s [3] definition of automation—a mobile PDS actively “selects data, transforms information, makes decisions, or controls processes” (p. 50). When the system detects workers in the established hazard zones, it issues alerts and slows or stops the mobile machine. Even though a mobile PDS may be a viable and promising safety solution, there are still a number of questions regarding how well this automated technology will fit with mining tasks and conditions. Using a mixed-methods approach, the current study explored factors that influence the fit of mobile PDSs in the underground mining environment.

Case studies abundantly demonstrate that properties with viable mineralization and *proven reserves have been overlooked, forgotten. or ignored and can be rediscovered by inexpensive literature search techniques Areal studies s as WaIlaby Enterprises Mining District Data Base Program appear to be more effective than traditional commodity studies. The success of such studies depends on the inclusion of Mineral Clairant Questionnaire Data, Mineral Ownership Data, Field Examination Data and the continual updating of all information. Such studies are valuable for proposed or existing Wilderness Area Evaluations.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating the Co and Mn resource of the West-Central Arkansas District, including field investigations, mineralogical characterization, beneficiation, and hydrometallurgical tests. The deposits occur within the Ouachita Mountains and are con-trolled structurally, occurring along the axes of anticlines making up the mountain ridges. Brecciated novaculite is cemented with a mixture of Mn oxides, primarily cryptomelane and psilome-lane. Cobalt is concentrated within a particular Mn oxide phase, lithiophorite. Chemical analyses on head samples reported up to 25 pct Mn and 0.17 pct Co. Magnetic separation yielded products with up to 41 pct Mn and 0.22 pct Co at recoveries of 95 pct Mn and 93 pct Co.
