El Abra is one of the world’s premier copper de-posits. The project is located in northern Chile, 140 km (87 miles) inland from the Pacific coast. It has the same geologic age and structural setting as the world-class Chuquicamata copper mine located 42 km (26 miles) to the south. The current development plan for El Abra extracts798 Mt (879 million st) of high-quality oxide ore. This will require building a solvent extraction/electrowinning(SX/EW) facility that can produce 225 kt/a (248,000stpy) of cathode copper. This will make El Abra the largest SX/EW copper operation in the world, and the world’s seventh-largest copper producer.

Geotechnical solutions were developed for closure of two historic, remote underground mines in the deserts of southern California. Closure criteria included access closure, minimal site impact, and optimum use of native materials. The closure designs and construction activities incorporated techniques for protecting sensitive biota, particularly bats and desert tortoise. The types of mine openings that were closed include adits, declines, shafts, daylighted stopes, and dugout dwellings. The desert locations permitted implementation of cost-effective closure techniques that relied upon the use of native materials. The strategies and techniques developed for these desert closures are adaptable to other climates.

"The mission of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Minerals Information Center (NMIC) is to collect, analyze and disseminate information on the domestic and international supply of and demand for minerals and mineral materials essential to the U.S. economy and national security. Understanding mineral exploration activities and trends assists government policy makers, minerals industry decision makers and research entities in identifying where future sources of mineral supply are likely to be discovered, the amount and type of these resources and factors that may affect exploration and development.This review summarizes significant exploration trends related to active sites and budgets, mineral commodities and regional factors for the years 2001-2015. Data were compiled by specialists in the USGS-NMIC, and reported annually in the USGS-NMIC Minerals Yearbook series and in the May issue of Mining Engineering magazine. External data for these analyses were derived from industry sources, published literature, and SNL Metals & Mining, an offering of S&P Global Market Intelligence (New York, NY).The USGS-NMIC compiled exploration site data for more than 80 mineral commodities, focusing on base metals, diamond and precious metals. More than $138 billion constant U.S. dollars were budgeted by the minerals industry from 2001 through 2015 to explore more than 16,000 mineral deposits globally (SNL Metals & Mining, 2016a). Annual analyses identified where mineral exploration took place by principal commodity target, ranked the magnitude of activity in each region, identified the factors that most affected changes in exploration activity and highlighted developments that led to changes in global supply or increased diversity of supply to the United States. Geographic classifications noted in this report were Africa, Australia, Canada, China, Latin America, Pacific, Russia, United States and Rest of the World."

"For the Hollywood International Airport Runway Expansion Project at Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the structural fire durability analysis was completed for a series of tunnels formed by roadway and railroad cells located under the runway structure. A systematic design approach was developed to mitigate structural damage during a fire event and arrive at a practical method to structural fire engineering that is compliant to NFPA 502. To ensure the NFPA 502 requirements are satisfied, the performance based approach was implemented and the engineering analyses were performed for the adopted design fire event. The analyses considered the facility’s unique features including its fire safety systems to determine applicable design fire curves for structural durability analyses. The paper also outlines the process of defining the project specific fire curves for a specific design fire scenario and summarizes the results of heat transfer and structural fire durability analyses. This approach was aimed to assist the owner and Authority Having Jurisdiction to achieve practical decisions to the tunnel facility fireproofing.INTRODUCTIONFort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport (FLL) in Broward County, Florida is a major hub facility serving more than 23 million passengers annually. As part of the Airport Expansion Program, the South Runway (9R-27L) Expansion project aimed to meet ever increasing service demands via an increase to runway lengths. This necessitated the placement of one of the reconstructed runways on bridge structures over the existing U.S. Route 1 (US 1), a major north–south U.S. Highway that serves the East Coast of the United States, and the Florida East Coast (FEC) Railway, thus effectively creating multiple tunnel cells beneath the subject runway. For this project, HNTB suggested a tunnel fire damage mitigation system that would protect the runway major structural elements from the design fire event that may happen within the tunnel cells. This paper addresses the issues related to the fire event originating within the tunnel encompassing the US1 highway only, and deals with requirements of NFPA 502 [5] exclusively. Therefore, while approaching the structural fire protection issues for the specific tunnel cells beneath the runway structure, the requirements of the American National Standard NFPA 502 (Standard for Road Tunnels, Bridges, and Other Limited Access Highways, 2008 edition) were followed. "Mining has been a source of controversy for at least 500 years. “Since there has always been the greatest disagreement amongst men concerning metals and mining, some praising, others utterly condemning them…” (Agricola, 1556). In 2016, it is widely recognized that mineral resources and reserves must give due regard to the social license in order to operate.“Most commonly, the social license to operate (SLO) is understood to refer to ‘the ongoing acceptance and approval of a [project] by local community members and other stakeholders that can affect its profitability’ (Moffat, 2014).” “Social License to Operate has gained traction, in part, because it is also a concept which – while remaining poorly, technically defined – is generally easily and widely understood by community stakeholders (Bice, 2014).”A generation ago we learned that mining is based on a stable platform supported by three pillars, geology, mining and metallurgy. The three-legged stool is a very stable structure (Fig. 1).In 2016, it seems that we have added some other legs to the stool (Fig 2). The Australasian Code for Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves (JORC Code) addresses “social, and governmental factors…” (JORC 2012), and refers specifically to social license in Section 4 of the Report Template “Estimation and Reporting of Ore Reserves.”The Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) Guidelines refer to “environmental, legal and social data…(CIM 2003).”Compared to these, the 2014 SME Guide is positively verbose stating “a discussion of any potential social or community related requirements and plans for the project and the status of any negotiations or agreements with local communities,” (SME 2014) although in all cases the scope of this disclosure is left at the discretion of the competent person.When there are more than three legs on the stool, it is imperative that all legs be constructed exactly to the design. Any one or more legs that are out of alignment will cause the stool to wobble.Engineers are trained to create designs to meet specifications. Loads can be estimated, forces calculated and cost studies completed that will lead to, not only a stable design, but the most efficient design that meets the specifications."

Subsidence events occurring above inactive room-and-pillar (R&P) mines, including abandoned mines or sealed portions of active mines, are classified as unplanned subsidence, because of their timing and distribution are unpredictable. When investigating such subsidence cases, many uncertainties exist and disputes often focused on whether the observed structural damages are caused by mine subsidence or other natural or artificial causes. However, solid evidence to identify the cause is often lacking. In order to conduct a complete and impartial investigation, thorough knowledge of subsidence theories and other ground control topics, as well as broad experience, are required.

Production began in the Deep 1 zone of Goldex mine in 2017 at a depth of 1,200 m. Stope dimensions are 50 m high by 22 m wide (along strike) and the panel thickness varies between 22 to 35 m. The Deep 1 orebody is 350 m high by 400 m along strike and 200 m from hanging wall to footwall. The mining method is longhole with paste backfill with a three dimensional primary/secondary sequence advancing upwards in a typical chevron approach and retreating from hanging wall to footwall in a V-shape from a central panel. Mining at a depth of 1,200 m in massive granodiorite brings challenges related to seismicity.

Heat stress is a major concern for the health, safety and productivity of miners working in hot and humid underground mines. At greater depth, heat inside underground mines increases due to geothermal gradient, heat released from high-capacity machinery, exposed rock surface, auto-compression of air, human metabolism, etc. Prolonged physical work in thermal environments severely affects the health, safety and efficiency of miners. In order to address this important issue, a systematic literature review (SLR) has been conducted. This SLR aimed to identify the research gap in the area of heat stress effect on underground miners and its control. An extensive literature search was carried out on numerous digital databases, grey literature and conference proceedings to identify relevant research work for this review. Moreover, the impactful studies, methodologies and preventive measures undertaken during the past five decades on the effect of heat stress on underground miners were retrospectively analysed, with a broader aim to explore the need for further research on this pertinent topic. Overall, 571 references were identified from the literature review, out of which 51 research articles addressing the sources of heat, heat stress effects on miners, heat stress indices and control measures for heat stress in underground mines were selected as primary papers for detailed review. Pre-developed fatigue is one of the prime causes of health hazard, safety and productivity loss of miners working in underground high heat stress zones. Hence, development of a better heat stress index integrating personal, environmental parameters and pre-developed fatigue (PDF) of miners is essential.

Fall of ground accidents continue to be a source of injury in underground metal mines. MSHA accident statistics indicate that most rock fall accidents occur at a new face where drilling and blasting methods are used. Removing loose rock by scaling is imperative to removing the potential for rock fall injury. Detection of potentially loose rock could improve the scaling process and result in fewer rock falls. Infrared thermal imaging cameras were investigated as far back as 1966 as a tool for loose rock detection. Early on it was clear that sensitivity (e.g. detectable temperature increment) is a key factor in this application. Both pixel resolution and temperature resolution have greatly improved with modern instruments. This paper describes an evaluation of modern infrared thermal imaging camera technology to detect loose rock conditions at six underground metal mines in the western U.S. It was found that thermal images provide a high resolution visual discrimination between loose rock and intact rock. However, detecting loose rock was difficult in cases where the rock and ventilation air were at the same temperature. Loose rock was detected when rock was both warmer and cooler than the ventilation air temperature. Warm rock with cool ventilation air provided the best conditions for detection.

As part of the British Steel Corporation?s development plan during the 1970?s, it was decided to concentrate its bulk steelmaking processes based on the BOS at 4 major Works with access to deepwater ore terminals, for the supply of high-grade imported ores. These 4 sites were at: - 1. Rarenscraig Works in Scotland where the ore terminal would be hilt at Hunterston on the west coast some 50 miles away. Bavenscraig was already an integrated Works but suffered from having to discharge ore 27 Glasgow tenxinus on the River Clyde, which could only accommodate vessels up to 25,000 tonnes. In the future, ore was to be unloaded at Runterston and shipped by a rail-link into Ravenscraig, The new ore terminal would have the potential to unload vessels up to 300,000 tonnes. - 2. Port Talbot Works in south Vales where the existing harbour was developed to discharge large ore carriers. This again was an existing Integrated Works and the benefits of the new harbour also applied to Llanwern Works which was another integrated Works some 50 dies to the east, which would now receive ore from Port Talbot.

Bench scale and pilot plant research was conducted using dolomites (CaO,MgO) lime as the basic additive in the preparation of self-fluxed pellets from a typical magnetic taconite concentrate (5.57 S_2). The specific objective of this investigation was to ascertain the viability of the magnesia lime pellets in high temperature oxidizing and reducing atmospheres. Pellet basicity and induration temperature were major parameters affecting fired pellet quality; temperatures ranging from 1,200° to 1,250" C appeared to be the most favorable for production of self-fluxed pellets with basesities (B) above 1.0. Comparison of the mechani¬cal and metallurgical properties of regular (acid) and self-fluxed pellets (B 1.55) produced under similar conditions in a modified grate pelletizing machine showed that the self-fluxed pellets were more resistant to abrasion and to high and low temperature reduction disintegration, an important consideration in commercial application. The Plus 3 mesh Linder index increased from 68 percent (regular pellets) to over 90 percent (self-fluxed pellets). The reducibility and swelling indices of the self-fluxed pellets were found to be comparable to the regular pellets.

Each year, one living inductee, two recipients of Medals of Merit and up to five honorees from mining history are chosen by the MFSW for their outstanding contributions to the mining industry. Gregory H. Boyce will be the guest of honor, featured speaker and inductee into the American Mining Hall of Fame. Boyce, chairman and chief executive office of Peabody Energy, is being honored for his leadership in the coal industry.

"This summary of international mineral exploration activities for the year 2016 draws upon information from industry sources, published literature, SNL Metals & Mining (SNL), an offering of S&P Global Market Intelligence (New York, NY), and specialists in the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Minerals Information Center. Three types of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration: 1) budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. dollars provided by SNL; 2) regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2016 as compiled by the USGS and 3) regional events and legislation that affected exploration activities including economic, social and political conditions, which were derived from published sources and discussions with USGS and industry specialists. Commodity and regional compilations are presented in this summary. Because multiple sources were used to develop commodity and regional compilations, statistics may vary depending on the source and type of data that are being reported. The SNL data summarize budget estimates for worldwide exploration activities in 2016 for 30 nonfuel mineral commodities and metal alloys, based on company surveys. Surveys focused on precious metals (gold, platinumgroup platinumgroup metals (PGMs) and silver), base metals, (cobalt, copper, lead, molybdenum, nickel, tin and zinc), bulk commodities (bauxite, chromite, iron ore, manganese, phosphate and potash) and other commodities (aluminum, antimony, diamond, graphite, heavy-mineral sands, lithium, niobium, rare-earth elements (REEs), scandium, tantalum, tungsten, uranium, vanadium and yttrium). Information on uranium exploration activities was included in SNL’s survey for the first time in 2007. Data on lithium, niobium, phosphate, potash, REE and tungsten were compiled for the first time in 2010, and scandium, vanadium and yttrium were added in 2014 because of their increased topical significance. Since 1999, companies with exploration budgets of $100,000 and greater were included in the SNL surveys. SNL budget estimates exclude coal, and oil and gas. The 2016 SNL mining company survey compilation was reported by SNL to include an estimated 95 percent of the world’s nonfuel mineral exploration budgets. The 5 percent that was not covered was accounted for by companies that chose not to participate in the SNL survey, private companies that do not publish their budget data and government-funded exploration activities."

Chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) is the most refractory copper mineral when treated in conventional sulfate media leaching systems. This is the first study to examine the use of a dimethyl sulfoxide (CH3SOCH3, DMSO) solution containing copper chloride (CuCl2) for the leaching of chalcopyrite. Leaching experiments for a copper concentrate composed mainly of chalcopyrite were conducted at ambient pressure at 313–413 K. The leaching fractions of Cu, Fe, S, Au, and As were investigated. It was found that 90% of the Cu was extracted in 2 h, and 94% was extracted in 4 h at 373 K, which is competitive with other conventional processes. A DMSO solution containing CuCl2 could selectively dissolve the valuable metals Cu and Au from chalcopyrite, but leave minerals with little economic value such as pyrite (FeS2) and As in the residue. Chalcopyrite is oxidized by cupric ion in proportion to the stoichiometric ratio of Cu in the concentrate to the initial cupric ion in the DMSO solution, which is enhanced by the presence of oxygen below 373 K.

Alternative methods of analyzing data acquired by the Morenci copper concentrator process control instrument-computer system are presented. Experimental measures of ore characteristics, for proposed feed forward control, are introduced. These include on-line indexes of ore hardness, ore density, ore dusting, and ore color. Comparison of metallurgical results before and after computerized process control implementation, allowing for differing ore grades, oxidation, hardness, and fineness of grind, also is described.

The Quick-Erect Stopping System (QESS) offers a new way of reducing the radon exposures of miners in Germany, especially during remediation work in old mines. The QESS is a light-weight, modular, and reusable construction kit of interlocking telescopic aluminum tubes, radon-proof foil, and expanding foam. It is designed to seal off radon-rich parts of galleries within only a few minutes. Originally, the QESS was developed to protect miners against radon exposures. Then, the QESS found the attention of several mine rescue teams at a German mining conference. The Student Mine Rescue of the Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg and the Wismut Mine Rescue carried out firstmine rescue drills in Freiberg and Schlema. Additionally, a mine rescue drill was carried out by the Front Range Mine Rescue in the Edgar Experimental Mine of the Colorado School of Mines. These drills helped to improve the systemand highlighted its potential for mine rescue operations. Now, the QESS is wellsuited for small-scale mining. The QESS can be used to seal off galleries in only a few minutes to both protect miners fromradon exposures and to support mine rescue operations. Moreover, the QESS was also successfully used in ventilation experiments.

By now the term AFMAG has been fairly well introduced to the mining industry. Several papers have been presented and published concerning AFMAG (references 1 and 2). However, the term AFMAG remains rather new to the industry, and the exact place which AFMAG occupies in the minerals exploration field is still somewhat uncertain in the minds of many who may have use for this new and interesting method of electromagnetic exploration for conductive minerals. It is the purpose of this paper to again review the basic theory of the AFMAG system, to describe and - illustrate the equipment and data presentation as used in aerial surveying, and to provide some idea of the cost and nature of airborne AFMAG surveys. This paper is primarily of a general descriptive nature and presents AFMAG theory in a schematic rather than mathematical form; emphasis is placed on the equipment, the present method of data presentation and survey operations, since it is believed that such, information will now generally best serve to inform the mining industry of the characteristics of the AFMAG system.

Some of the members will probably ask themselves what close relationship exists between hydro-metallurgy and a wet scrubber, but we are sure that as soon as deeper thought is given to the matter it will be realised how vital scrubbing, operations are in metallurgical plants. In ordinary metallurgical installations or pyro-metallurgical processes ore concentrates are first of all shifted from place to place and dust is created. In other cases the ores or concentrates are crushed or dried or roasted, and in each one of these operations dust and fumes, are created. All suspended particles and fumes originating from the abovementioned conditions not only, in many instances, provide health hazards which disrupt production and endanger the personnel in the plant, but also are the source of economic losses through extra maintenance and wear to moving machinery due to abrasion and corrosion. Further losses are incurred by the waste of fine, very often valuable, components. The Party who once said that in several metallurgical plants the bulk of the profits was discharged into the atmosphere by the stack wasn't stretching the truth. There is a place in Africa where a gold producing concern used to lose over 5 oz. of fine gold per day out of a total production of 3000 oz. per month. In another instance, copper concentrate going as high as 80% Cu was discharged into the atmosphere at the rate of 4 tons per day. Realising the value of removing and collecting solids and fumes created in metallurgical plants, a thorough study was made of the available plant and equipment offered on the market. Some units were found very efficient, but very expensive; some others also very efficient but with temperature and maintenance limitations. Some others were also efficient but prohibitive from the point of running costs.
