In view of this the Chairman proposed that the paper on flash smelting be introduced and discussed first, after which the remaining three papers would be introduced followed by discussion on all three.Dr Cocquerel, who presented the first paper, used some typical flow diagrams to illustrate the process and stated that the program considered only steady-state operations and did not take into account the dynamical changes. Subjective judgment was necessary for the preparation of input data and some degree of user appreciation was required.Dr Cocquerel said that no work bad yet been done on an optimization program, but that this was being considered. Such a program would require a large amount of physical and chemical data which were not yet available. The variables to be optimized were the energy and material consumptions and the loss of metal in the slag.The Chairman opened the discussion by asking Dr Cocquerel if he could give a brief description of the flash smelting process for the benefit of those not familiar with the subject. Dr Coquerel replied that in the Outokumpu process con¬centrates were injected directly into the furnace, and that the process was somewhat analogous to flash distillation or evaporation processes, but was perhaps closer to the burning of pulverized fuel.The process had two distinct advantages. First, the heat evolved in the smelting reaction was used to heat the furnace, which resulted in less fuel consumption, and, second, the effluent gases were cheaper to treat than the effluent gases from other pyrometallurgical processes. This was important particularly in view of the current interest in pollution problems.Mr P. Marais thought that the authors had done themselves an injustice by not including details of the very complex processes taking place in the furnace."

"One of the most important performance indicators of a dense medium cyclone (DMC) circuit is the Tromp curve, and by extension the separation density and Ecart Probable (Ep) values. The densimetric profiles of DMC product streams have been traditionally acquired using heavy liquid sinkfloat analysis, which has certain disadvantages, such as the associated safety and health risks. More recently, non-toxic media such as lithium hetero-polytungstates (LST) have been used, with the desired densities being achieved by maintaining the solutions at specific temperatures. However, the high costs of these liquids can be prohibitive. The long turnaround time of the sink-float analysis is a further disadvantage for timeous interventions to the operating set-points of the DMC process.The RhoVol technology can generate the density distribution of a batch of particles in a rapid, accurate, repeatable, and safe manner. Additional data of interest, such as particle size and shape, are also measured and reported on a per-particle basis. Furthermore, samples can be sorted into discrete sorting bins based on any of the measured parameters of the particle, making further analyses of the material possible.This technology has applications across all commodities that use the DMC, particularly in the size fractions –25 +8 mm and –8 +3 mm. To date, laboratory results have proved very encouraging – separation densities are within 5% of traditional sink-float results, and the technology is being introduced to diamond DMC plants. IntroductionDense medium separation is a commonly applied beneficiation technique for the density separation of valuable products from crushed ores. The industrial applications of dense medium separation have been summarized and reviewed by various authors (Scott and Napier-Munn, 2000; Bosman, 2014; Napier- Munn, 2018). Dense medium cyclones (DMCs) are widely used in the coal and diamond industries to produce clean coal or to preconcentrate kimberlitic ores, respectively. Cyclone performance (separation density monitoring) techniques are varied. In the mineral industry. Density tracer tests (Napier- Munn, 1985, 2014; Davis, Wood, and Lyman, 1985) without mineral material, are widely used, although their accuracy in predicting operating cut-points becomes limited once mineral material is introduced. More recently, radio frequency tracers have been also used for the determination of cyclone efficiency (Partition Enterprises, 2017)."

Some years ago, Ferroatlantica developed a new type of electrode known as the ELSA electrode. In this electrode there is a central graphite core that provides support, surrounded by an annulus of Søderberg paste that gets baked during operation. This technology has been implemented on several silicon furnaces around the world, and was reported on during the previous Infacon conference. In all electrodes, but particularly in the ELSA electrode, the quality and consistency of the paste are important for correct operation. As the type of paste varies between customers and between countries, Ferroatlantica has developed a quality control procedure for their customers of this technology. This procedure is geared to the point of view of the customer rather than the paste producer. The analysis is based on the desired flow pattern of the raw paste and on the desired mechanical and electrical properties of the baked paste, as experience has shown that these are the most important parameters to monitor in order to avoid having problems with the resulting electrodes. This paper discusses these methods of paste analysis in the light of complementary studies that have been done when there has been an electrode breakage in the different plants.

A mechanistic description of axial segregation in rotating drum flows remains an open question. Consequently, optimal mixing of grinding balls and rocks for efficient breakage, maximum production of fines, and slurry transport is seldom achieved. Experimental and numerical studies of granular mixtures in rotating drums identify alternating axial bands that eventually coarsen in the long-term limit. Most models of axial segregation are limited to binary mixtures and cannot always predict the logarithmic coarsening effects observed experimentally. A key missing factor is a robust description of the axial free surface profile that is valid across a wide range of flow regimes. We present a practical model of the axial free surface profile by linking it to readily-derived geometric features of the cross-sectional S-shaped free surface profile. A parametric study shows good agreement with experimental measurements reported in the literature and heuristically valid trends.

Solvay has developed several novel reagent innovations to improve separations in sulfide ore flotation and address major industry challenges. These innovations include: a) carbon management strategies to reduce the deleterious impact of organic carbon on flotation circuits; b) new collectors for heavily tarnished or oxidized Cu-Au ores; and c) a functionalized depressant for minimizing penalty elements in metal concentrates. Owing to their unique chemistries, these innovations exhibit a wide spectrum of rather unique properties that are quite in contrast to the traditionally used reagents. The chemistry, attributes, application, and advantages of these innovations are discussed in this paper based on laboratory, pilot, and plant results and observations for various ores

Spiral separators have been widely accepted as one of the most flexible gravity separation devices for several decades. The International Journal of Mineral Processing, 84, pp. 118 – 132 mentioned that spirals are for treating material too coarse for flotation and too fine for dense-media separation. Powder Technology V 102, pp 244 – 252, 1999 stated that there exists a genuine need for extending the performance envelope of spirals – whether to treat finer or coarser material than the traditional size ranges. In recent times there has been an upsurge in interest, particularly in the development of newer fine gravity separators. Spiral separators for the recovery of ultra-fine particles have a unique profile, pitch and features to ensure efficient performance. The flow on the spiral trough must be controlled to minimise turbulence that will entrain fine particles in the outer section of the trough. The experimental test work showed a movement of mass from the outer region towards the centre column of the spiral, i.e., from the fine tailings band towards the concentrate. As recovery on the spiral trough is a function of mass yield and grade, the ultra-fine 7 spiral had a better recovery than the HX5. This makes the UF7 an ideal rougher spiral. MunroPapers:Corporate exploration strategies by MacKenzie, B.W.The Engel Simulator and the search for uranium by Griffiths, J.C. and Singer, D.A.The Chairman opened the session by tracing the changes which have taken place in the exploration field since the days of the lone prospector who relied upon his individual skills and to a large extent on luck. The deposits which now remain to be discovered are better covered and are of lower grade. A much greater team effort, involving geoscientists and engineers, is required. The gamble is thus much greater -not only are the probabilities of failure still significant but the consequences are more severe. A recent Canadian survey indicated that expenditures of between two and nine million dollars on regional exploration programs are required to locate one significant deposit.The Chairman went on to say that these facts have led companies to regard exploration as another form of investment and to treat it accordingly. This had placed exploration in the context of corporate strategics and structures, which was the subject of the first paper of the session.In introducing his paper, Dr B. W. MacKenzie said that the paper suggested a decision framework for exploration planning. Initially the environment is analyzed to define observable and relevant economic characteristics. The terms of reference for exploration planning and the appropriate allocation of capital and skills are then established in the light of corporate objectives and growth alternatives. With the aid of this information and in the light of profit and corporate risk criteria, exploration strategies can be selected.Dr MacKenzie went on to say that the usefulness of the concept and criteria outlined in his paper depended critically upon three characteristics of any particular economic environment, namely, the return resulting from an economic discovery, the unit discovery Cost and the probability of making an economic discovery. He then showed by means of a case history relative to the Canadian Shield and Cordilleran areas that these three characteristics could, in fact, be evaluated for regions with reasonable histories of mineral activity.The first contributor to the discussion of the paper, Mr Alfred Weiss, mentioned that his group had been involved in exploration modelling for some ten years and were thus particularly interested in the paper. He went on to say that they had experienced greatest difficulty with reconnaissance programs and that he sensed that these difficulties were also present with the methodology which had been outlined. Mr Weiss asked Dr MacKenzie how he would deal with such situations when no information was available but where there was the potential for both exploration and discovery. Dr Mackenzie agreed that the lack of information was a very severe limitation and said that at the present time his methodology probably did not provide a basis for breaking down the broad geological regions he considered into areas for further assessment."

ABSTRACT: In the south of the Island of Gran Canaria (Spain) there appear layers of swelling clays inside volcanic formations of a fonolitic type, down to depths as low as 500 m, with thicknesses of 1 to 3 m. Two tunnels (each of length 1,500 m) have been built in these zones (ignimbrites and swelling clays), work on which started in the ‘70s. The construction has been influenced by phenomena of expansivity and decompression. Presented below are the problems that arose, the field and indoor studies conducted and the numerical optimisation of the lining. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Im Süden der Insel Gran Canaria (Spanien) kommen im Inneren vulkanischer Formationen phonolithischen Typs in Tiefen von bis zu 500 Metern 1 bis 3 Meter dicke Blähtonschichten vor. In diesem Gelände aus Schmelztuff und Blähton begann man zu Beginn der siebziger Jahre, zwei Tunnel von jeweils 1.500 Metern Länge anzulegen. Die Bauarbeiten standen unter dem Einfluss von Dehnungs- und Dekompressionserscheinungen. Der folgende Text enthält eine Darstellung der aufgetretenen Probleme, der durchgeführten Feld- und Laborstudien und der numerischen Optimierung der Tunnelauskleidung. Sheryl Sandberg, the COO of Facebook, published a book titled 'Lean In', where she invites women to sit at the table. In summary, to 'sit at the table' entails not only embracing opportunity, but to actively seek out opportunities in leadership positions. Sandberg points out that, unfortunately, apart from institutional obstacles, a woman's own perceived limitations have a negative impact on her leadership ambitions. To create an environment where diversity will flourish, where everyone has a seat at the table and everyone has a voice, safety must be established first. To establish safety within a diverse team, there is power in relationships and connections. This study will first and foremost review theories in literature as to why diversity and inclusion are so important and the value that diversity brings to our industry. The study also recommends a few focus areas for improving diversity and inclusion in the industry.

The concentrations of selected trace elements (As, Cd, Hg, and Pb in run-of-mine (ROM) coal, discard, and coal product were investigated to assess the efficiency of beneficiation in reducing trace element concentrations and ascertain any implications regarding environmental compliance to regulatory frameworks. Samples were collected from a colliery in Mpumalanga Province twice a month for a period of 24 months. The samples were ashed to approximately 0.21 mm, then digested in a mixture of 70% HNO3 and 40% HF and analysed using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Except for Pb, the mean concentration of all elements decreased from the ROM stage to the coal product stage. The order in which trace elements occurred from the highest to lowest throughout the production chain was Pb>As>Hg>Cd. With the exception of Cd, the mean trace element concentrations in the discard were above the total concentration threshold (TCT) set for landfill disposal. The As, Hg, and Cd concentrations in the product were well below the thresholds for all land uses. However, Pb concentrations in the product coal were above legal limits, which is of concern with regard to environmental compliance and the performance and marketability of the product.

Aluminium alloys have gained popularity in many industries due to their high strength and low weight. One shortcoming of aluminium alloys is their poor resistance to abrasion and erosion wear compared to materials such as stainless steels. In this project, aluminium alloy 2014 (AA2014) was coated with a 1.5 mm thick laser-deposited layer composed of silicon, copper, and aluminium with the aim of increasing the wear resistance. The amount of silicon, copper, and aluminium added to each sample was determined by a mixtures model. It was discovered that the Al-Cu system is very sensitive to silicon additions and that wear resistance depends on the primary phase to solidify as well as on the final phase distribution. Two primary phases were identified; alpha aluminium and theta intermetallic. It was observed that the clad layer increases both the hardness and wear resistance of AA2014, and that the material solidifying as primary alpha aluminium displayed a lower hardness but higher wear resistance than the samples containing primary theta phase. All clad layers performed better in terms of wear resistance than the unclad samples. The knowledge gained and principles used in this project could be applied to many other aluminium alloys.

The Paradela dam has a spillway that makes it possible to discharge a maximum flow of 400 m3/s, the water discharges being on the river Sela, about 2km upstream the river Cávado. After the first use of the spillway, some landslides have occurred on the right bank of the river Sela as a result of the erosion generated on its base about one hundred meters near some houses of a small village. This paper presents a study performed for the slope stability where finite element results are taken into account. A monitoring program was established that essentially consisted of measuring sub-horizontal displacements in points located in boreholes at different depths and also phreatic levels. Some monitoring results are presented. Le barrage de Paradela a une décharge d’eau avec un débit maximal de 400 m3/s sur le fleuve Sela dans un endroit situé environ 2km sur l'amont du fleuve Cávado. Après la première utilisation de cette décharge, quelques glissements se sont vérifiés sur le versant droit du fleuve Sela résultant de l’érosion générée sur sa base dans une zone à 100 mètres de quelques maisons d’un petit village. Ce travail présente une étude réalisée concernant la stabilité du versant avec la considération des résultats des éléments finis. Un programme d’auscultation a été mis en place pour mesurer les déplacements sub-horizontales sur des points situés en forages à des différentes profondeurs. Quelques résultats de cette monitorization sont présentés. Der Ueberlauf des Padela Dammes ermoeglicht das Ablassen einer max. Wassermenge on 400 m3/s in den Sela Fluss, ca. 2 km flussaufwaerts des Cávado Flusses. Nach Inbetriebnahme des Ueberlaufes traten in ca. hundert Meter Entfernung zur Wohnbebauung eine Dorfes Erdrutschungen am rechten Ufer des Sela Flusses auf, die auf Erosionen am Flussbett zurückzuführen waren. In der vorliegenden Studie wurde die Boeschungsstabilitaet unter Beruecksichtigung von Berechnungsergebnissen der Finiten Element Methode untersucht. Es wurde ein essprogramm ausgearbeiten, das im Wesentlichen auf Messungen der Untergrundverformungen in verschiedenen Bohrlochteufen sowie auf Grundwassermessungen beruht. Im Folgenden sind einige Messergebnisse dargestellt.

PrennThe Chairman in opening the session highlighted the current situation in the United States of America where some 85 to 90 per cent of all mining (except for coal) is done by open pit methods, and where some 40 per cent of the coal is mined by open pit. The South African industry is, of course, dominated by the deeper level underground gold mines; however, with the aid of an extensive open-pit technology developed in other countries, South African companies arc continuing to explore possibilities of open-pit exploitation of base mineral, coal and diamond deposits. Several successful ventures are already in operation at Phalabora, Optimum Colliery, Kimberley and elsewhere, and South Africa is undoubtedly benefitting in this regard by drawing on the experience of others.The papers of this session were therefore particularly pertinent, particularly when viewed in conjunction with those presented at an earlier South African conference devoted specifically to open pit mining.Two themes dominated the discussion which followed presentation of the three papers at this session. The first related to the practicability of using the reported techniques as a tool for management, and their acceptability as such to mine management. This was, of course, not peculiar to this particular session, but rather the major point of debate over the entire conference.The second theme concerned the reliability of the initial drill hole data on which any open-pit design must necessarily be based. This gave added emphasis to the problem of practicability, for no management is likely to accept an elaborate pit design unless confidence can be placed in the ore reserve assessment.In noting these two features of the discussion, it should be remembered that all the three papers dealt largely with design and pre-planning; there was an unfortunate lack of papers or discussion on the subject of controlling the day-to-day mining of open pits, and this is an area where the potential impact which can be made by the computer is even greater.In introducing his paper, Mr D. A. Phillips pointed out that it was concerned only with optimization, and that it therefore assumed, firstly, an adequate subdivision of the orebody into ore blocks characterized by grade, rock type, structure, etc., and, secondly, an acceptable forecast of costs and mineral prices in order to generate a suitable profit matrix. However, programs dealing with these problems for both massive, disseminated and stratiform ore bodies are available to Roan Consolidated Mines. The method of optimization which he had described had been used on a region split into 28 000 blocks, for which the program used three hours of C.P.U. time on an IBM 360/40 computer. The computer design had provided a three per cent improve¬ment on a normal design of the same area."

JournelIn his presentation Mr Wiik said that unrolling could be regarded as a reversal of the natural process of folding, so that the aim of an unrolling procedure would be the reconstruction of original pre-tectonic conditions. While simply formulated, this aim might not always be achieved. The geometrical relationship between points on the deformed surface and corresponding points on the original surface is process-dependent, and a true reconstruction could be achieved only if the deformation history were known in detail.In this computer unrolling procedure all these complexities were ignored. Referring to one particular marker horizon, Mr Wiik said that it was assumed in the procedure that this marker was deposited as a horizontal stratum and that it had subsequently been deformed by simple flexure-type folding.The procedure allowed the geologist to incorporate his knowledge and conception of the deposit through repeated re-contouring with dummy points. This 'manumatic' aspect of the procedure had proved invaluable, not only in resolving specific unrolling problems but also in making the system more acceptable to the geologists in general.Unrolling served towards removing what might be termed `tectonic noise' superimposed on the primary distribution patterns for regionalized variables such as metal content and orebody thickness. From this point of view, variograms derived on the basis of unrolled-plan co-ordinates should be more meaningful in terms of depositional environment than are variograms calculated from a normal map projection.Mr M. M. Oosterveld remarked that it appeared from the paper that there were problems in applying the unrolling technique to ore reserve calculation, and asked whether there were not other methods that might be used for that purpose.Mr Wiik replied that at present unrolling played only a minor role in practical ore reserve estimation within Roan Consolidated Mines, Limited. The techniques currently in use differed from one orebody to another, but in general they involved projection onto a vertical longitudinal section or a horizontal plan, with subsequent grid interpolation by means of a standard computer contouring package."

The aim of this investigation is the evaluation of optimising the Shahroud copper ore beneficiation plant near the Iranian city of Shahroud, by means of a sensor-based ore sorter applying X-ray transmission technology. Currently, this plant’s feed capacity of 52t/h produces 0.5t/h copper concentrate with a grade of 30% and copper recovery of 85% from a feed grade of 0.36%. By applying an X-ray transmission-based (XRT) sorter, it is possible to preconcentrate the feed and remove the gangue materials before entering the plant, enabling the production rate of concentrate to be increased. In this study, the obtained representative sample from the plant was preconcentrated in particle size of - 75+10mm by using the X-ray sorter, thus the concentrate with Cu grade of 0.85% was obtained. Therefore, by using of X-ray sorter the Cu grade of plant feed was increased to 0.48%. By increasing the feed grade from 0.36% to 0.48%, and considering a Cu recovery of 85%, the production rate will be increased from 0.48t/h to 0.61t/h. The sulphide flotation circuit at First Quantum Minerals’ Kansanshi mine in Zambia produced over 100,000 t of copper in 2019. For this circuit, mineralogical analysis has shown that the majority of the copper lost is hosted in fine liberated chalcopyrite, which is a paramagnetic mineral. The objective of this work was therefore to improve fine chalcopyrite recovery in the sulphide flotation circuit at Kansanshi, using a magnetic conditioning technology to agglomerate fine paramagnetic minerals. This theoretically increases the probability of attachment during collision and therefore improves recovery. A four-month paired ‘t’ test plant trial was carried out and comprised of consecutive ON-OFF periods with and without magnetic conditioning in the rougher flotation bank of the sulphide circuit. The experimental design involved assessment of recovery by size based on daily and weekly composite samples of feed and tails, sized using both wet-screening and cyclosizer. Both the daily plant data and the sized samples showed an increase in Cu recovery with magnetic conditioning ON. A 0.56% copper recovery improvement was measured with magnetic conditioning at a 99.4% confidence level. Keywords: Flotation, fine mineral, chalcopyrite, magnetic aggregation

The density used to covert volume to tons is critical in determining the real in-situ tonnage of Mineral Resources. However, the methods used to determine density and the use of different technical terms are seen to be inconsistent throughout the industry. Probably the best discussion addressing the determination of density was presented by Lipton (2001). This paper does not try to replicate this excellent work, but rather to review current industry practice and present a comparison of the approach to density in public reporting. Some of the technical terms used in reporting and the common methods applied are also discussed.

"The complexity of the mining and metallurgical operations of Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines, Limited, has made it necessary to use computer-assisted planning techniques in order to maximize copper production and marginal contribution to profit. The most successful of the Group Production Scheduling systems utilized linear programming to optimize the concentrate routing only. This third-generation system was commissioned in March, 1968.It bad become necessary by March, 1970, to expand the long-term planning activities and to take into account new mines and new concentrate treatment schemes. Technical difficulties and manpower limitations made it impossible to expand the third-generation system, and it was decided to construct a new Group Production Scheduling system using only linear programming.The plant models in the new fourth-generation system are based on data available from the monthly reports of the metallurgical plants. The models consist of mass balances and empirical relationships. Matrix coefficient assignment and management reports are produced using a Report Generator Language designed for linear programming data files. The development of this system is an example of a user application of a system package."
