All mining and milling complexes can, within limits, operate at a variety of production rates. Factors of economic importance that are affected by production rates are costs per unit production, recovery and product grade. Once the relationship between the production rate and cost is established, dynamic programming techniques can be used to define the optimum production schedule (that is, the production schedule that maximizes the present worth of the operation) for the life of the deposit. In general, assuming that the capacity and efficiency of the physical plant remain unchanged throughout the life of the deposit, the optimum production rate is not constant for the life of the deposit, but declines gradually as the deposit is being exhausted.

Few thinking people will dispute the fact that a constant improvement in the wages of Black personnel is essential, but this cannot be done merely by a redistribution of income in South Africa.

Eng.), Ph.D. (Cape) (Fellow) The theoretical and experimental results of a study of centrifugalmills are reviewed. Means for the scaling up of such mills are suggested, and tests on a prototype mill are described. Despite the high lining wear in the centrifugal machine, which reduces its productive availability, its other advantages suggest that there is merit in pursuing its further development.

This paper, which adopts a philosophical approach, attempts to analyse the contribution that the computer is capable of making in geological analysis, financial evaluation, and mine project control. Also examined are some reasons for non-utilization of these capabilities. As with most computer associated problems, the cause is primarily human and not mechanical. The paper gives one numerical example of the analysis of geological data and one of the evaluation of mine-design data. The values used in the examples are intended only to emphasize certain points and are not necessarily reproducible.

There are no manuals or handbooks for budding mill superintendents or process plant managers. Most who obtain this level of responsibility have gained their training from watching the good and bad of their predecessors and the successful ones have themselves graduated from the school of hard knocks. This paper attempts to provide some helpful guidelines and direction for those who aspire to better manage a mineral processing facility. The authors have 20 years combined experience in senior management roles at nine different mineral processing operations in Australia and overseas, covering gold, base metals and mineral sands. This summary of tips and pitfalls will hopefully benefit future leaders in mineral processing and metallurgy.

Gold extraction from double refractory ores using conventional cyanidation has proved challenging due to the presence of carbon within the ore. Carbon particles may adsorb leached gold resulting in gold losses to tailings, i.e. preg-robbing the gold. Some of the preg-robbed gold may be recovered by the application of the HiTeCC process on CIL tailings. The process developed by Metso Outotec involves caustic conditioning of the tailings followed by high temperature desorption and simultaneous adsorption onto virgin activated carbon of the aurodicyanide. The aim of this paper was to develop a model for the HiTeCC process which could be used to support design and optimisation of the process, based on the adsorption characteristics of the preg-robbing and activated carbons. It was found that accurate experimental isotherms can be used to predict the behaviour of preg-robbing adsorbents. Comparing the sorption isotherms for preg-robbing ores and activated carbon indicated similar dependencies on temperature and ionic composition. Applying boundary layer diffusion models coupled with experimentally determined isotherms for preg-robbing ore and activated carbon, the HiTeCC process was successfully simulated at experimental and plant scale. Gold recovery of the HiTeCC process is most sensitive to the temperature of desorption and gold loading of the activated carbon, with increased temperature improving recovery. The gold loading of the activated carbon in the process should always be maintained lower than that of the normalised pregrobbing carbon gold loading to ensure favourable conditions for adsorption onto the activated carbon. Caustic conditioning stabilises adsorption and is therefore not necessary during the desorption stages of the process, but potentially improves recovery during adsorption. The paper proposes a new method for selective calciferous separation. The effect was achieved through the application of the combination of high-power electromagnetic pulses (HPEMP) and a specific reagent regime of the flotation. The combined application of HPEMP with the special reagent regime allowed for the improvement of the scheelite floatability: the recovery of CaWO4 rises from 41.2 % (untreated sample) to 58.5 (sample treated at 103 pulses). In contrast, the floatability of calcite decreases significantly: the recovery of calcite drops from 74.7% (untreated sample) to 41.1 % (sample treated at 103 pulses). In the processing of sulfidic ores, pyrite is usually depressed and ends up in the tailings. However, pyrite is the most common species responsible for acid mine drainage (AMD) due to its spontaneous oxidation. This AMD affects the tailing chemical stability by dissolving some toxic or heavy metals species such as As, Cd, Co, Pb, and Zn, which can migrate into the surrounding ecosystems. Therefore, the strategies to reduce pyrite’s environmental impacts are a crucial point to produce more chemically stable tailings. Consequently, numerous studies have been made to find procedures that could inhibit or restrain AMD. This work aims to develop a procedure for designing conceptual flotation circuits that can produce tailings with low content of pyrite and to assess this type of circuit with traditional flotation circuits. The method consists of applying optimal flotation design where three products are considered: metal concentrate, pyrite concentrate, and tailing with low content of pyrite. Two approaches are considered; in the first, a flotation circuit is designed to generate a concentrate rich in all sulfide minerals and to obtain a tail with low pyrite content. Then, a second flotation circuit is designed for the selective separation of the bulk into metal concentrate and pyrite concentrate. This is called fractional separation design. In the second approach, a flotation circuit design is realised that generate the three products simultaneously. This is called integrated separation design. Both fractional separation design and integrated separation design are assessed in this paper. This methodology is focused on cleaner production (waste prevention and resource minimisation) rather than end-of-pipe technology (treat existing waste). The methodology was applied to a copper sulfide ore from a local company in the Antofagasta region (Chile). This ore contains chalcocite, covellite, iron oxides, and pyrite. This paper briefly describes a computerised model of the South African electricity system which has been developed jointly by the Atomic Energy Board and the Electricity Supply Commission. The results of an analysis of this system have been subjected to a fairly extensive sensitivity analysis which reveals that up to the year 1990 between 680 and 700 million tons of coal will be required for electric power generation, together with between 7 000 and 10 000 tons of uranium. This result is fairly insensitive to data variations, but the prediction of a cumulative requirement up to the year 2000, of between 1 300 and 1 800 million tons of coal and 25 000 to 70 000 tons of uranium, proves to be very data-sensitive.

A number of shallow coal or hard rock mines employ pillar mining systems as a strategy for roof failure control. In certain platinum mine layouts, pillars are designed to ‘crush’ in a stable manner as they become loaded in the panel back area. The correct sizing of pillars demands some knowledge of the pillar strength and the overall layout stress distribution. It is particularly important to understand the impact of the layout geometry on the effective regional ‘stiffness’ of the rock mass around each pillar. An important design strategy is to model relatively detailed layout configurations which include a precise representation of the local pillar layout geometry and to analyse multiple mining scenarios and extraction sequences to select optimal pillar sizes and barrier pillar spacing. Although computational solution techniques are now impressive in terms of run time efficiency, a major difficulty is often encountered in assigning suitable material properties to the pillars and in devising an effective material description of the layered rock strata overlying the mine excavations. This paper outlines an efficient numerical strategy that can be used to assess large-scale pillar layout performance while retaining the ability to modify individual pillar constitutive behaviour. The proposed method is applied to selected layouts to compare estimated average pillar stress values against values determined by detailed modelling and against observed behaviour.

Mineral processing produces a saleable product from high-cost ore. The Mineral Processing Engineer must constantly improve the separation to create the most value from the ore and reduce the associated costs. Graduate Metallurgists (or Chemical Engineers) have had the university theoretical training required, but often are illprepared to perform their plant roles. The in-work Metcelerate programme was designed specifically to develop the practical skills that Mineral Process Engineers require, by combining three key elements: 1. Knowledge transfer through self-paced, on-line training; 2. Practical skills acquisition through assessed, practical plant exercises; 3. Skills development through online tutorials. A final process improvement project adds significant value to the operation that far exceeds the training cost. Experience from Metcelerate clients has indicated improved staff retention, greater confidence, and pro-active process intervention.

Additive manufacturing can be used to produce complex and custom geometries, consolidating different parts into one, which in turn reduces the required number of assemblies and allows distributed manufacturing with short lead times. Defects, such as porosity and surface roughness, associated with parts manufactured by laser powder bed fusion, can severely limit industrial application. The effect these defects have on corrosion and hence long-term structural integrity must also be taken into consideration. The aim of this paper is to report on the characterization of porosity in samples produced by laser powder bed fusion, with the differences in porosity induced by changes in the process parameters. The alloy used in this investigation is AlSi10Mg, which is widely used in the aerospace and automotive industries. The sample characteristics, obtained by X-ray tomography, are reported. The design and production of additively manufactured parts can be improved when these defects are better understood.

High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) are mostly used prior to pelletising processes to increase the specific surface area (SSA) of iron ore concentrate. For expressing SSA, the Blaine index is utilised as one of the most important dimensional properties of iron ore pellet feed. ISO 21283 is a standard test method that explains the manual of Blaine air-permeability apparatus for determination of this parameter. In this standard, the disaggregation method is based on passing the minus of 1 mm samples from the 0.150 mm sieve. The disaggregation process has an effective role on the results of Blaine airpermeability test especially for regrinding HPGR products. In this research, firstly the Blaine index of samples was measured without disaggregation. Following this, disaggregation was done by passing the minus of 1 mm samples through three sieves with different dimensions, 0.150, 0.090 and 0.045 mm, separately, and the Blaine index was calculated for each one. Finally, lab-mill with rubber balls, called Jar mill, was investigated as another option. Screen analysis and image analysis with SEM were performed to evaluate the effects of the sample's disaggregation on the size distribution and agglomeration of samples. The results showed that the disaggregation method with sieve size 0.150 mm, according to ISO 21283, was not applicable for HPGR products because the particles were still stuck together. In addition, the disaggregation method with the sieve size 0.045 mm or with Jar mill offered reasonable results. Seismic risk in the deep gold mines of South Africa has been studied for many decades. A clear understanding of the effect of geotechnical conditions on the seismic hazard nevertheless remains elusive. Certain reef types seem to be associated with a higher risk of rockbursts. The stability and deformation behaviour of excavations on the different reef horizons are affected by the rock types and the varying strength properties. The seismic response to mining is therefore also expected to differ according to the geotechnical conditions. As a case study of this behaviour, the seismicity at Mponeng mine was investigated. On the VCR (Ventersdorp Contact Reef) horizon, two areas can be delineated. On the eastern side of the mine, the footwall is shale, and on the western side it is a strong brittle quartzite. More large-magnitude events occur in the area with the shale footwall than the area with the quartzite footwall. Moment tensor analyses indicated that the majority of the large-magnitude events are not related to geological structures, but are face-related, implying that shear failure of intact rock is occurring ahead of the mining front. Preliminary modelling indicated that the closure volume for the shale footwall may be higher than that for the quartzite footwall, providing a possible explanation for the observed difference in seismic response.

Key variables in heap leaching include permeability, mechanical stability and mass transport. All of these properties can be manipulated by agglomerating and curing the ore before stacking it into heaps. The chemical and structural evolution of the agglomerates during curing is key to improving agglomerate properties and, ultimately, heap performance. It is possible to image the internal structure of agglomerates using SEM/EDX (e.g. QEMSCAN or MLA), although these methods are destructive and do not represent the 3D structure of the agglomerates. A non-destructive alternative is to image the agglomerates using X-ray Microtomography (XMT). Not only does this provide 3D information, it also allows the same samples to be repeatedly scanned, allowing the time evolution of the agglomerate structure and chemical composition to be tracked. In this paper we compared the behaviour of ores agglomerated using a combination of sulphuric acid and ferric sulphate with ones in which chloride ions are added to the recipe, since chloride leaching is gaining in popularity as a chemical alternative to bioleaching for sulphide ores. We tracked the curing process beyond the typical time scales to see the impact that this has on both the agglomerate structure and the subsequent leaching behaviour. "The mining operation at Namdeb’s Southern Coastal Mine (SCM) is unique. It targets gravel layers up to 30 m below sea level, which continue to dip deeper, further west, under the Atlantic Ocean. On this storm-dominated coastline, severe water seepage into mining areas, rugged orebody footwall characteristics, and highly variable resource grades all contribute to a challenging operational environment. Namdeb has a proud history of innovation, and as the mine progresses further westwards and associated technical and economic challenges increase, this innovative culture has become essential to the future of the mine. The Theory of Constraints (ToC) has been widely used at SCM, and across the mining discipline, to focus efforts on improving overall business profitability. Through analysis of the mining processes, opportunities were identified, solutions developed, and initiatives implemented with staggering results across all three mining disciplines, i.e. stripping, load and haul, and bedrock bulking and cleaning. This paper outlines the solutions adopted and the results of the ToC analysis. IntroductionSouthern Coastal Mine (SCM) is one of three Namdeb operations located in the southwestern corner of Namibia, between the Orange River in the south, the Namib Desert to the east and the Atlantic Ocean to the west (Figure 1). These three geographical features set the backdrop for the world’s greatest marine diamond mining placer (Badenhorst, 2003). SCM is situated along the coastline extending from the mouth of the Orange River to Chameis Bay approximately 120 km to the north. The active mining area, called Mining Area 1 (MA1) is, however, limited to very narrow strip, 30 km in length, in the south of the licence area, close to the town of Oranjemund.Namdeb, a wholly owned subsidiary of Namdeb Holdings, is a 50/50 joint venture between De Beers and the Government of Namibia. Diamonds were first discovered along the Namibian coastline in April 1908, close to the town of Luderitz, but mining operations started in the SCM mining area only in February 1929 (Schneider, 2009). Initially all Namdeb mining operations exploited massive land-based deposits, producing nearly 40 million carats from MA1 between 1920 and 1977 (Schneider, 2009) when mining targeted onshore raised beaches west of the high water line. Since 1977 however, SCM and Namdeb have developed a unique mining method to economically extract the resource which extends westward under the Atlantic Ocean."

It has a capacity of 5 ft3t and was named the No. 20. Next in line was the No. 24. Built in 1933, it had twice the capacity of the No. 20 unit. Then, in 1934 and 1939 came the No. 36 (22,5 ft3) and No. 48 (40 ft3) respectively.
