Calcium minerals such as scheelite, phosphate, apatite are valuable minerals, which have similar flotation properties to the calcium gangue minerals. An additional problem is the fine dispersion and close mineral association of valuable and other minerals. Low polar compounds (non-ionic surfactant), such as fatty iso alcohols, neonol and phosphol, and their combinations with sodium oleate have been studied using flotation of monominerals and ore flotation; ATR IR spectroscopy and TEM for study surface of minerals; UV spectroscopy for control solubility, aggregation and de-aggregation processes. Increase in solubility of fatty acid collectors was confirmed by low soluble (heteropolar) compounds. Oxyethylated esters of phosphoric acid are adsorbed on phosphorite by -O2PO2R2 and on other rock minerals by donation of OH bond. Same effect shows difference of adsorption of fatty iso alcohols on calcite and scheelite. The different forms of adsorption of ionic and nonionic compound on a sparingly-soluble mineral surface creates distinction of the flotation kinetics and technological balance of ore flotation. The results of the separation of flotation of scheelite from calcite depend on the order of pouring into pulp of fatty iso alcohols and oleate, and their ratio in the mixture. Increasing scheelite recovery into rougher scheelite concentrate by 3.6% for both the flotation and sludge classes was obtained. Calcite recovery varied slightly upwards or downwards by 0.8-2.4%. The use of the non-ionic surfactant phosphol in combination with a fatty acid soap allows for obtaining a phosphate concentrate with more than 28% P2O5 content and almost 80% recovery in flotation operation. To be held from the 9th to 14th April, 1972, in Johannesburg, South Africa. GENERAL INFORMATION The first symposium in the series was staged by the University of Arizona in 1961. Since then Stanford University, Colorado School of Mines, Pennsylvania State University and the Society of Mining Engineers of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers have acted together with the University of Arizona as co-sponsors of the series. The 9th Symposium in 1970 was sponsored by the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy together with McGill University and Ecole Poly technique in Montreal. The 10th Symposium, the first to be held outside the North American continent, is being organised by the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (with the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research and the South African Council for Automation and Computation) in close collaboration with the previous co-sponsors. OBJECTIVES Mineral ventures increase in scale and complexity. The planning and control of these projects requires more and more sophisticated techniques. The intention of the symposium is to pool and exchange experience and knowledge and also to discuss new and potential developments. The papers presented in the main sessions, which will extend over one week, will together indicate progress which has been made in the successful application of operations research, mathematical, statistical and computer methods in each of the various aspects of operation in the mineral industry. A coherent account will be developed by consideration, in consecutive sessions, of the stages through which mineral prospects evolve in the course of their life. Primary aims are thus to stimulate discussion in depth of previous applications, to highlight current trends and to provide guidelines for future developments. PARTICIPATION The intention is to bring together persons responsible for managing the various operations in the mineral industry and the workers engaged in the development of mathematical and computer methods relevant thereto. SYMPOSIUM TOPICS 1. Market Analysis-demand and supply trends, models of mineral markets, price prediction. 2. Exploration and ore reserve estimation--exploration strategies, choice of drilling and sampling patterns, quantification of geological information, geo-statistical analysis, ore reserve assessment. Storage and retrieval of associated data. 3. Project design and analysis-influence on viability and risk of capitalisation, scale and method of operation, processing, uncertainties in design premises. 4. Planning of operation-planning and scheduling of construction, of development and of depletion of ore reserves. Logistics, rock mechanics and ventilation. 5. Control of operations-financial, production, cost and quality control as applied to both mining and processing. Flow and processing of relevant information. CALL FOR PAPERS An invitation is extended to intending authors to submit a synopsis, in 200 to 300 words, of papers which would develop the themes outlined above. The Programme Sub-Committee will choose, on the basis of these synopses, some 20 to 30 authors who will be invited to submit papers. Selection will be aimed at the provision of a coherent structure. Other authors may be invited to submit short papers either as contributions to the primary papers or for brief discussion in ancillary sessions which will be scheduled to follow on the main sessions. The official language of the symposium will be English. TOURS AND VISITS A choice of visits to relevant local undertakings on a day during the course of the symposium will be available to participants. These will include a deep level gold mine. A tour which will include mineral projects of interest and the Kruger National Game Park will be arranged in the week following the symposium. LADIES' PROGRAMME Arrangements will be made for the reception and entertainment of ladies. ACCOMMODATION Accommodation will be available at hotels convenient to the symposium venue. The cost of reasonable hotel accommodation in Johannesburg is in the range R5 to RIO (7 to 14 U.S. dollars) per person per night. All reservations and associated arrangements may be made through agents to be appointed by the organisers in due course. FEES AND COSTS Symposium fees will not exceed R70 (100 U.S. dollars). These will include registration, one copy of the published proceedings, a set of pre-prints of the main papers, teas and lunches during the course of the symposium, and the various official social events as well as the mid-week visits. The effects of welding current, electrode force, and welding time in a resistance spot weld were studied to investigate the effectiveness of welded joints between a thin EN10130: DC04 material and a thicker 817M40 part, through analysis of the microstructural and mechanical properties. All welded specimens were subjected to tensile testing at room temperature (25°C) and sub-zero temperature (–46°C) to test the strength of the welded joints. No full button failure was observed at either room temperature or sub-zero temperature after optimization of the weldng parameters. The fusion zone was observed to consist mainly of martensitic phase, due to rapid quenching, while the HAZ was composed of clusters of martensite in a ferrite and bainite matrix. The base 817M40 metal remained fully ferritic after welding. The hardness was found to increase with increasing welding current. An increase in nugget size, indicating good fusion of the weld, was observed with an increase in the welding current.

Furnace wall tubes from 600 MW subcritical boilers at three coal-fired power stations were sampled and the fireside deposits examined to determine the mechanism of fireside corrosion. This involved an indepth investigation into the morphology and composition of the fireside deposits and the conditions of the furnace that enable this type of attack. SEM-EDS analysis revealed high concentrations of oxygen, iron, and sulphur, QEMSCAN and XRD analyses identified the presence of Fe3O4, Fe2O3, FeS, and FeS2. Differential thermal analysis showed thermal activities at temperatures of 500–600°C, 900–1100°C, and 1100–1250°C, which are associated, respectively, with FeS2 oxidation to FeS and Fe2O3, at 475–525°C, formation of aluminosilicates at 925–1100°C, and melting of FeS around 1190°C. The absence of sodium and potassium eliminates the contribution of molten alkali sulphates to the corrosion. The consistent coexistence of iron sulphide and iron oxide is indicative of the substoichiometric conditions in the furnace, while the detection of pyrite suggests that the coal is not completely combusted, which points to a poor combustion process. These observations were affirmed by gas analysis at one of the stations, where very high levels of carbon monoxide were measured at the furnace wall (≥ 14 000 ppm) and furnace exit (≥ 3500 ppm). The high CO concentrations are indicative of limited combustion caused by limited O2. These reducing conditions promote the formation of FeS-rich deposit, which is the corrosive species responsible for degradation.

"SynopsisDry beneficiation of coal by air dense medium fluidized bed is an emerging trend. It is widely believed that the particle size of the medium has a significant effect on the separation efficiency. This investigation demonstrates that medium particle size has a major effect on separation efficiency. Experimental results show that different size fractions of the same feed respond differently to the same size fraction of medium solids. Furthermore, a particular size fraction of feed coal responds differently with different size fractions of medium solids. The Ep values and overall metallurgical performance parameters, obtained from experimental results, clearly indicate the superior performance of an air dense medium fluidized bed separator when using –150+106 µm magnetite powder as the fluidizing medium. These observations reinforce the importance of sizing the medium particle size for the air dense medium fluidized bed.IntroductionIn an air dense medium fluidized bed (ADMFB), a fluidizing bed of a particular density is created by suspending solid particles in an upward air flow. A feed containing coal particles of different densities is introduced into this fluidizing bed. The particles with relative density less than the bed density float on the top of the bed, while particles denser than the bed density sink through it. Since there is a general correlation between ash content and density of coal particles, it is possible to remove ash-forming impurities from a raw coal to the required level by regulating the density of the fluidizing bed. Recently, the ADMFB process has received significant attention world-wide for its specific advantages of low operating cost and less restrictive for small capacities (Luo and Chen, 2001; Houwelingen and de Jong, 2004; Dwari and Hanumantha Rao, 2007; Sahu et al., 2009; Mohanta et al., 2012). This process is not recognized as a well-established industrial practice because of the availability of efficient wet processing technology. However, with the revival of interest in dry beneficiation of coal in general, and ADMFB in particular, there is a concerted effort to improve the efficiency of the ADMFB process, and successive improvements have made the process a competitive and viable option for beneficiating coal."

The UCAR® CHILL-KOTE? freeze lining concept combines wall cooling with carbon and graphite refractories of higher thermal conductivities to ?chill? the refractory lining by transferring heat from the refractory lining. Effective sidewall water cooling, together with the efficiency of the heat dissipating conductive refractories, lowers the temperature of the lining to below that of the molten process materials. This causes a layer of slag and process metal to solidify or ?freeze? and form a protective ?skull? which completely coats the refractory hot face. Once formed, the slag skull insulates the refractories, reducing heat loss and protect the lining from erosion, chemical attack, thermal shock, and other stresses. The result: extended life and greatly improved refractory performance. The Ilmenite smelting process depends on the presence of a solidified slag skull to protect sidewall refractory material from chemical attach by molten slag. No known refractory material is able to withstand this corrosive material. To date, UCAR has not applied their Chill Kote ? technology in the ilmenite smelting industry. This paper revolves around the results obtained from conducting an ilmenite smelting campaign on a 500kW DC open-arc furnace with a UCAR designed refractory system. The purpose of this test was to establish the effects such a lining has on refractory wear and the reduction-smelting process. Proper thermo-couple management enabled the authors to monitor lining wear for the duration of the campaign. Prior to the pilot-scale campaign, modeling work was completed to evaluate the feasibility of applying UCAR® CHILL-KOTE? technology to ilmenite smelting furnaces. The successful operation of a pilot-scale furnace equipped with the UCAR® CHILL-KOTE? lining as well as concise modeling suggest that it should be a viable option to consider for an industrial-scale furnace.

Eutectic freeze crystallisation is a novel separation technique that can be applied to treat brine solutions such as reverse osmosis retentates, which are often a mixture of different inorganic salts. The treatment of calcium sulphate-rich brine solutions through eutectic freeze crystallisation has resulted in gypsum scale formation on the walls of the crystallisers and ancillary equipment. In order to prevent gypsum scaling on equipment surfaces, it is essential to understand the mechanism of gypsum scaling on cold surfaces. This paper focused on the interaction between gypsum crystallisation in the bulk solution and scaling on the crystalliser walls in the presence of gypsum seeds. A cooled, U-shaped stainless-steel tube suspended in the saturated solution was employed as the scaling surface. Preliminary results showed that the scale layer was predominantly composed of needle-type and hexagonal prismatic crystals. The rate of scale deposition was highest during the first 24 hours, thereafter it decreased. A thin scale layer was observed to have coated the tube within the first hour of the experiment. Seeding, using reagent grade gypsum crystals, was effective in reducing scale layer formation through providing a surface for growth. The highest scale reduction, 81%, was realised at a seed loading of 0.50 g/L. At a high seed loading of 4.01 g/L, the seed material adhered to the tube. "Many mines in South Africa were inappropriately closed and left unattended during the last century. These old mines are potential sources of environmental pollution and may pose a health risk to local populations, since the surrounds contain elevated levels of toxic elements. Soil from the old Edendale lead mine property in Mamelodi Extension 11, east of Pretoria, which was suspected to be contaminated with lead, was analysed. The mine, which primarily extracted galena, was decommissioned in 1938. During this study, the old mine property and surrounds were screened for zinc and lead using a field-portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) spectrometer. The metal concentrations, which ranged from 18 to 7 300 mg/kg for zinc and from 50 to 21 000 mg/kg, for lead, were plotted together with the GPS coordinates to produce a concentration distribution map for lead and zinc. This map revealed three anomalies of unacceptably high concentrations, possibly corresponding to areas where ore had been piled or dumped to waste from the old mine. Thirty-six of the soil samples that were analysed by pXRF on site were selected and analysed in the laboratory using inductively coupled plasmaoptical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) for verification purposes. The zinc and lead concentrations obtained from the two analytical methods were compared using linear regression analysis. Excellent correlation was obtained between the results from the two methods (r2 = 0.99 for zinc and r2 = 0.95 for lead). IntroductionEarly economic development in South Africa was based mainly on mining. However, these activities left a legacy of approximately 6 000 improperly closed mines scattered throughout the country (SAI, 2009; van Schie, 2012). Due to their proximity to settlements, these abandoned mines may pose a potential health risk to humans and an environmental hazard. Mining activities generate large amounts of waste, mostly in the form of overburden and process tailings, which often contain high concentrations of toxic elements. Bioavailable toxic elements can contaminate crops growing in the polluted area (Kala, 2010; Marwa, Meharg, and Rice, 2012) or eventually migrate and detrimentally affect the groundwater (Rösner and van Schalkwyk, 2000). Moreover, sulfides accumulated in mine waste generate acid minewater (Rösner and van Schalkwyk 2000). Unfortunately, owners of mines, closed before the promulgation of the Minerals Act more than twenty years ago (Act 50 of 1991), avoided the compulsory rehabilitation of the environment enforced by this legislation. Toxic elements, such as lead, which were confined within ores, may become exposed through mining and are therefore more easily mobilized within the environment. Elements essential to human and plant metabolism, such as zinc, when exposed by mining activities, may become hazardous due to elevated concentrations (Aslibekan and Moles, 2003; Wuana and Okiemen, 2011). Humans exposed to potentially toxic metals may experience harmful effects as discussed elsewhere (Nriagu and Pacynar, 1988; Wayne and Ming-Ho, 2005)."

Slope stability is a fundamental part of a successful mining operation. It impacts directly on the safety of personnel and the economics of the mine. The Jwaneng Mine in Botswana is planning a push back of 644m depth in the south east wall. Mining will commence in 2010 and be completed in 2024. This will put the mine in the deep pit category. The mine has invested in extensive geotechnical data gathering and design programs that started as far back as 2003 for the south east wall. The south east wail of Jwaneng Mine is characterized by foliation that dips adversely into the mining faces. The orienta1ion of the foliation is variable due to intense tectonic movements that have also caused the occurrence of faults that are sub-vertical. A considerable amount of information on the characteristics of structural patterns and the rock mass has been collected. This paper presents an overview of the feasibility level geotechnical design that is about to be concluded.

The leaching of chalcopyrite in ferric sulfate media is notorious for its slow and inhibited kinetics. Different methods have been proposed to improve the kinetics, including the use of organic compounds as additives to the leaching media. In this study, the enhancing effect of methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol, and 2-propanol on the leaching of chalcopyrite in aerated acid ferric sulfate solutions using different reactor systems was investigated. The results revealed a clear improvement of copper dissolution by methanol and 1-propanol relative to tests with no additives under similar conditions. Operating a continuous-flow mini-column reactor yields surprisingly good results, potentially related to the maintaining of a consistent leaching micro-environment on the mineral surface. Scanning electron microscopy studies showed that the alcohols result in the removal of surface deposits formed during the anodic dissolution, potentially thus facilitating improved cathodic reduction of the ferric ion to drive the anodic dissolution.

In order to meet society’s ever-increasing demand for metals and address the numerous technical, economic and environmental challenges within the current mining context, a holistic approach to process design, which is grounded in mineralogy, is needed. This would ensure that the impact of varying process mineralogy (and associated chemistry) on technical considerations and the associated economic implications and environmental consequences are taken into account upfront. This investigation focuses on the commodity zinc due to its strategic value coupled with limited resource availability and the wide variety of substantially different process technologies in existence. As the most commonly processed zinc ores contain zinc sulphides, the mineralogy/chemistry of these ores and their associated process routes will be discussed. The findings have been generated through the analysis of two case studies, Teck’s Trail Operations (British Columbia, Canada) and Hudbay Minerals’ Flin Flon Operations (Manitoba, Canada). The flotation of zinc sulphide ores to produce concentrates with varying mineralogy, represents the starting point for both case studies. The hydrometallurgical process routes for the further refining of zinc and other valuable metals include roast-leach-electrowinning (RLE), and zinc pressure leaching (ZPL). The effect of process route choices on primary metal recovery (Zn), coproduction of other base metals (Cu, Pb), potential for other valuable metal production (Ag, Au) including less well known, but increasingly important trace elements (In, Ge), and the production of other by-products (H2SO4, S0) are discussed. The economic and environmental implications of these aspects will also be considered. It is concluded that a quantitative modelling approach must be taken where waste management is integrated into process system design and simulation as a key unit operation. Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. sc. Eng (Mining Engineering) The purpose of this investigation was to assess the mining strategy for steep reefs at Mine A mine in 2005 and 2006. Reefs steeper than 35° were discovered when production commenced at the mine. At that time reefs steeper than 35° were not popular in South African tabular gold mines, therefore new techniques of mining them had to be developed. The underhand mining method was chosen for this purpose. The project was about assessing ventilation, support costs, local support cycles, adherence to the mine?s support standards, mine planning and efficiencies of the underhand mining method. The project work was covered by doing a literature research for underhand mining methods and performing a literature review of the mining methods, support methods, ventilation standards at Mine A. Underground visits were conducted at Mine A mine for data collection, and Mine B was visited to obtain information on support costs and efficiencies. During the investigation it was realized that the underhand mining method was an appropriate method for mining steep reefs; however, there were some challenges related to ventilation and support installation. Efficiencies could be realized with the underhand mining method and planning and scheduling were not different from breast mining.

Imagine being able to see all the future planned mining activities in real time. This is exactly what SIMS (Short Interval Management System) will enable you to do. SIMS is a real time short interval control system that continuously measures and sets optimised plans for mining production processes. The system utilises algorithm-based software that takes resources (people, equipment, tasks, and workplaces) and gives you the best achievable plan. The algorithm was developed using methods found in the field of metaheuristics. A metaheuristic is a strategy to designed to efficiently search for optimal or near optimal solutions to problems that are very complex computationally. (Glover, 1986) There are several algorithms that have been developed to solve optimisation problems which are difficult to solve using traditional techniques. This has given rise to a field called evolutionary computing. (Simon, 2013) Examples of these techniques are genetic algorithms, particle swarm optimisation, and ant colony optimisation. These methods are used to solve problems in a variety of fields. As an example, Kok and Lane (2012) used particle swarm optimisation for equipment allocation in a mechanised underground mining environment. The first SIMS deployment took place in a platinum underground tabular mechanised mine near Burgersfort (province?) from 2017-2019. This included the development from a paper-based system to a fully operational online system. SIMS then moved to a second site and is currently being tested in a second platinum underground tabular mechanised mine in South Africa. Full deployment of the system is currently being phased in. SIMS was built in response to issues that have been plaguing the mining industry for years. These issues are all aligned into one major problem statement: how can we optimise mining production processes without compromising safety? This product was developed by combining years of mining experience with software development. SIMS is based on a four-pillar concept. Safety, productivity, accountability, and business improvement. SIMS uses a set of pre-configured mining and production rules, and with the resources that are available, to determine valid short term production plans. A background algorithm then determines the optimum plan to be executed. The system continuously produces a set of job cards that are pushed to respective operators on their allocated tablets. The management portal component allows you to view and manage all current and planned work on any connected device available. This allows real time visibility of completed, current, and planned work to operators, service departments and management, i.e., seeing into the future.

Optimizing the catalytic performance of multimetallic nanoparticle (NP) catalysts demands a concrete understanding of their design, while preferentially deploying wet chemical synthesis procedures to precisely control surface structural properties. Here we report the influence of reductants such as hydrogen-rich tetrabutylammonium borohydride (TBAB) and carbon monoxide-rich molybdenum carbonyl (Mo(CO)6) on the shape and morphological evolution of Pt-based binary (PtNi and PtCo) and ternary (PtNiAu and PtCoAu) nanostructures derived from a homogeneous solution of aminebased surface active agents (surfactants) in a high boiling point solvent. We successfully synthesized nanostructures exhibiting well-defined and composition-controlled surfaces deploying a one-pot synthetic approach. The development of the surface properties was, however, observed to be alloyspecific. The resultant highly monodisperse alloy NP with narrow size distributions and facet-oriented surfaces are expected to display enhanced functionality as catalysts for utilization in specific chemical reactions.

High-profile failures of tailings dams illustrate the significant safety challenge they pose. The decant pond of such facilities plays an important role in their mechanical stability. This study investigates the feasibility of using public multispectral data collected by the Sentinel-2 satellite mission to monitor the area of the decant pond. The Sentinel-2 mission has a revisit time of 5 days and the data used herein has a spatial resolution of 10 m/pixel. We considered two water-detection metrics: the normalized difference water index (NDWI) and the near-infrared (NIR) reflectance. Implementation of the method at a South African platinum tailings dam illustrates the capabilities and limitations. Public, sub-metre resolution true-colour imagery served as validation data. There is good agreement between pond area measurements based on Sentinel-2 and the validation imagery. These results suggest the feasibility of using Sentinel-2 data to supplement the monitoring of the decant pond.

As a rule, removing waste rock at the beginning of the process improves the conditions for the flotation of minerals, and also reduces the operating costs of crushing, grinding and flotation. Lead-zinc ores in the Shalkiya deposit of the Republic of Kazakhstan are classified as difficult for enrichment, but taking into account their significant reserves, they are one of the main potential ores for the production of lead and zinc. Under industrial conditions, for processing ores of the Shalkiya deposit, a selective flotation concentration scheme with the production of lead and zinc concentrates is recommended. However, according to the recommended scheme, it is not possible to obtain high-quality concentrates of lead and zinc, with high metal recovery. The paper presents the results of studies of preliminary gravitational enrichment of lead-zinc ore in the Shalkiya deposit. Based on the fractional analysis for the particle size range of -40+8 mm, Henri- Reingard enrichment curves were constructed, separation density (2730 kg /m3) was established to isolate the light fraction with the lowest possible lead and zinc content, and gravity enrichment indices (0.7-0.71) were determined. It was found out that when using gravitational enrichment of the original large-sized ore in the Shalkiya deposit, tails are released at the beginning of the technological process with a yield of up to 20% with the extraction of silica up to 30%, calcite up to 11% and carbonaceous matter up to 12%. As a result of the studies, it was found that the beneficiation of crushed lump ore could be conducted in heavy suspensions. One of the positive aspects of the use of gravitational enrichment is the reduction of energy costs for grinding the heavy fraction, which was experimentally proved in this article. Tapping a blast furnace is necessary not only to deliver the product, but is also essential for the safety of the furnace and workers in the cast-house. This paper will highlight the practices at ArcelorMittal’s blast furnaces in the Vanderbijlpark Works, with specific focus on tap-hole design and monitoring as well as casting practice. Extension of the tap-hole life and hearth campaign will be illustrated with reference to the methods of maintenance of the tap-holes, troughs, runners, and cast-house equipment. The importance of proper cooling, good thermocouple installation, and temperature monitoring will be explained.

The empirical pillar strength formulae have been widely, and in most cases successfully, applied to design underground pillars for mines in the Bushveld Igneous Complex (BIC). This paper presents the case for combining the empirical method with numerical modelling when it comes to crush pillar stability analyses. The benefits include an understanding of potential failure mechanisms, which may then be accounted for in the designs. In addition, the impact of weak layers, such as shear zones, the impact of the dip of the orebody, differences in layouts, such as holing widths and the presence of advanced strike gulleys (ASGs) immediately adjacent to the crush pillars, and stress regime (k-ratio) may be studied using numerical modelling, as it is not accounted for in the empirical method.
