Sodium silicate (Na2SiO3) is one of the most common reagents used in the froth flotation process, in which it is an efficient dispersant as well as a powerful gangue minerals depressant. Due to its high affinity with a lot of minerals, mostly silicates, it adsorbs on their surfaces and prevents the adsorption of the collectors, maintaining them hydrophilic. Hence, Na2SiO3 is widely used in the flotation separation of rare earth minerals, zinc minerals, iron minerals, scheelite, fluorite, apatite, and many other minerals. For decades, authors have demonstrated higher efficiency of Na2SiO3 when it is used in combination with sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), a common pH regulator. Among many well-known depressants, this system presented the best efficiency for many ores, including the Tabuaço scheelitebearing skarn studied herein. However, the mechanisms resulting in these strong positive synergistic effects are not well understood at the moment. Hence, the response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to this ore, considered as a case study, to optimize the depressing conditions and to study deeply the flotation behavior of this system. Strong synergistic effects between the two reagents were exhibited by the RSM, mostly affecting the scheelite, fluorite, and calcium-bearing silicates recoveries. This was attributed to surface carbonation of the minerals by Na2CO3, subsequently leading to a better depression by Na2SiO3. Overall, a 1:1 ratio between the two reagents displayed the best results in terms of WO3 grade and recovery. To gain understanding in the molecular mechanisms responsible for the aforementioned synergistic effects, FTIR studies were combined with state-of-the-art molecular modelling (Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics at 300 K) on fluorite, an archetype of calcium minerals. Numerous developments and improvements have been made to tap-hole designs. On the other hand, there are very specific designs in operation that have endured for many years without any modification. Nobody likes design changes because of risk - the risk of atypical wear, potential hazards, and costly repairs entailing enormous production losses. So the philosophy ‘never touch a running system’ is maintained, because among other things there is no efficient working monitoring technology for tap-holes. In the past few years a couple of new technical solutions have been investigated and developed. Not all theoretical solutions are possible in practice. However, metallurgists are inventive, and the last word regarding efficient working tap-hole monitoring technologies has not yet been spoken.

The Brucutu iron ore mine (Minas Gerais, Brazil), is Vale`s largest iron producing operation achieving around 21 million tons by flotation of iron ore pellet feed per annum. The run of mine is mainly composed of hematite (70%) and quartz (30%). After preparation (comminution and sizing), the slurry is submitted to reverse cationic flotation of quartz under basic conditions (pH=10.5). Corn starch (500g/t) is used to depress Fe-bearing minerals and alkyl (C10) ether amine is the collector for quartz. The flotation circuit is arranged in a “coarse” section utilizing dated 28m3 square Wemco cells, and a “fine” section utilizing modern 160m3 tank cells. The “coarse” flotation circuit treats material from the deslime cyclone underflow while the “fine” circuit treats material from the deslime cyclone overflow and the pulp product from the “coarse” circuit scavenger 2 bank. Evaluation of process performance is of high importance as even small gains can lead to large improvements for this high throughput plant. Cell-by-cell samples of the froth products, selected feed and pulp-products were analyzed for flow-rate, overall chemical composition, and particle size distribution. Bank-by-bank samples of the feed, froth and pulp products were analyzed on an assay-by-size basis. In addition, the flotation cells were hydrodynamically characterized and gas dispersion parameters assessed. The detailed experimental program resulted in a thorough characterization of the process and enough information to produce a calibrated floatability component model. Longer mainline residence time results in significant Fe2O3 losses while yielding little benefit in terms of SiO2 grade. Scavenger 2 has twice the residence time of scavenger 1 while having to treat only 10% of the SiO2; resulting in high Fe2O3 recoveries to the froth and poor separation. In addition, it is shown that the Fe2O3 exhibits true flotation behavior resulting in increased Fe2O3 losses. The detailed data collection campaign coupled with in depth data analysis and modelling gives unprecedented information and highlights avenues for optimization that was previously unknown. Deformation of gob-side entries has always been a critical concern for ensuring stability in longwall coal mines. This paper addresses the significant deformation and support challenges that arise in thick and hard roof longwall faces (THRLF) due to dynamic pressure. The study aims to elucidate the characteristics and mechanisms of deformation during the retreat of the longwall face. The research findings indicated that the primary cause of deformation was the combination of advanced abutment stress resulting from longwall face mining and the movement of the lateral roof over the chain pillar. To mitigate this issue, we propose a deformation control method known as cutting off the lateral roof (COLR) over the chain pillar. Simulation results demonstrate a significant reduction in roof stress and deformation of the gob-side entry after implementing the lateral roof-cutting technique. These findings provide valuable guidance for effectively managing deformation in gob-side entries, particularly when dealing with thick and hard roof strata.

Spontaneous combustion (SC) is a cold oxidation reaction that generates heat, causing a temperature rise of the reactant and leading, with limited heat dissipation, to self-ignition of the reactant, which occurs without an external heat source. Although not limited to coal, the most significant hazard of SC are the fires that occur in coal mining operations around the world. These fires pose a serious risk to the safety of workers in the mines as well as adverse effects on the environment, and can affect the quality of life for current and future generations. We investigated the occurrence of SC in raw coal storage bunkers with the purpose of compiling a decision analyser for engineers designing or working with coal storage bunkers. Specific experts were interviewed from different backgrounds and companies, followed by field research at a coal mine. The important factors affecting the possibility of SC occurring were the type of coal supplied to the bunker, the mining practice, and physical conditions around the bunker. The information presented here will assist in reducing the SC risk in raw coal storage bunkers. These findings, together with the systematic decision analyser developed, will assist design engineers and mine personnel to take early preventative steps in managing SC. The decision analyser was tested for many different scenarios and gave good guidance on how to minimize and prevent SC in bunkers

Namibia's newest mining enterprise, the Navachab Gold Mine, was officially opened by President Sam Nujomo during June 1990. The mine is a joint venture between Erongo Mining & Exploration Company Limited, Metal Mining Corporation of Canada, and Rand Mines Windhoek (Pty) Ltd. Erongo has a 70 per cent interest in the mine, while Metal Mining and Rand Mines hold 20 per cent and 10 per cent respectively. Anglo American Corporation and its associates hold two-thirds of Erongo shares and CDM (Pty) Ltd one-third. The Mine is managed by Erongo Mining & Exploration Company. The property is located some 10 km southwest of the town of Karibib and 170 km west-northwest of the Namibian capital of Windhoek (Fig. 1), the name of the Mine being taken from the farm on which the gold deposits were discovered. Navachab is an opencast operation and was brought into production in December 1989 at a cost of around R84 milion-RS,2 million under budget. The plant is designed to treat 840 kt annually at an average gold grade of 2,6 g/t. This wil produce 1900 kg of gold per year, which at today's prices will earn Namibia more than R60 million in foreign exchange.

This article captures the intrinsic differences of thermal coal products, their utilization and their substitution characteristics. South Africa produces approximately 245 million tonnes of coal annually. Eskom consumes 46% (approximately 112 million tonnes), 26% (approximately 65 million tonnes) is exported, and SASOL Synthetic Fuels consumes 18% (approximately 44 million tonnes) and a further 9% (approximately 22 million tonnes) is consumed by domestic users in various different industries. Marketing theory contributes significantly to understanding the importance of technical product and quality appreciation and comprehension, encompassing elements of price, distribution, and promotion. Coal product specification is determined by the inherent geology of a resource and the number of complex actions to market the product to a specific consuming market. Sampling, analyses, beneficiation application, and an array of parameters contribute to matching thermal coal products to the value-in-use it provides to the different markets and its consuming industries. Coal producer shave come under increased scrutiny since South Africa has been experiencing electricity shortages since early 2008. General misunderstandings were declared on public forums and in the media by both legislators and the South African public since a perception developed that South African coal producers are exporting coal that could be utilized by Eskom.

CITIC Heavy Industries has a large installed base of grinding equipment throughout Africa in different configurations, including high-pressure grinding rollers with ball mill and semi-autogenous ball crusher. The total installed power of CITIC’s mills exceeds 430 MW. In this paper, we compare several typical grinding circuits of copper in Africa with about 15 kt/d throughput based on ore properties, process selection, equipment sizing, and key equipment capital and operating costs. Actual operating performance is also introduced. The comparison for the following mine sites provides a general reference for the selection of copper grinding circuits with this approximate throughput: Kamoa-Kakula Copper Mine with high-pressure grinding rollers with ball mill circuit, and Deziwa and Sicomine Copper-Cobalt Mines with semi-autogenous ball crusher circuits

Massive deposits of rock salt are mined in the Salt Range area of Pakistan. The main export products of rock salt include salt lamps, blocks, and tiles, while local consumption includes the chemical industry and domestic use. The profitable production of salt for value addition depends on the quality, size, and shape of the block. Salt processing for value addition is easier when very few cracks are present in the blocks. The current salt mining practice involves drilling and blasting, which introduces undesired fractures in the material. This paper focuses on the extraction of rock salt blocks by applying conventional cuboidshaped block mining methods used in quarries. The techniques include wedges and feathers, expansion chemicals, and blasting with low-yield explosives. Experimental work involved both laboratory-scale and in-situ field testing. Laboratory experiments assisted with the determination of splitting force, loaddeformation curves, and other rock mechanics parameters. Regression analysis proposes a relationship for the estimation of radial strain from the load in the case of the wedges and feathers method. The splitting force obtained from the laboratory tests was used to confirm the accuracy of the already published empirical relationship. The results of the laboratory as well as in-situ tests showed that the wedges and feathers technique is the most suitable method for mining rock salt blocks of the desired size, shape, while minimizing cracking.

Projects or project-orientated approaches have become a common form of work in nearly all sectors of economies. This has led to concepts such as ‘projectified’ and ‘project orientated’ organizations. By defining projectification of a company, industry, or economy as the share of project work in total work, one can reasonably determine the impact that project management, and by default projectification, has had on that company, industry, or economy in terms of staff optimization and allocation. This paper presents the results for such a projectification study of the South African mining industry. This sector has long been a significant contributor to the country’s economy from a gross value added (GVA) and employment point of view. Understanding the impact of projectification and the project management way of work on this industry may potentially add significant value to both the mining and project management knowledge areas. We show that although the mining industry is considered by some to operate in archaic ways, the level of projectification has increased over time, and now represents approximately one third of all work conducted.

This paper presents a detailed and systematic approach to metallurgy diagnostics using an integrated novel gold deportment technique for complex copper-gold and refractory gold ore bodies. This uantitative gold deportment for these complex ore bodies is a challenging task due to reasons such as lower grades, high variability of visible and invisible gold content in different sulphides and iron oxide phases, significant presence of disseminated and composite carbonaceous matters along with associations of various copper sulphide phases. Gold mostly occurs as "invisible gold" (sub-microscopic gold) as solid solution or as colloidal-sized particles in different sulphides and other phases. The dominance of invisible gold and presence of highly preg-robbing and finely disseminated carbonaceous matter adversely affects gold recovery in flotation and leach circuits. Studies were initiated on various complex ore deposits and also on samples representing various process streams. Some case studies are presented in this paper to demonstrate the value of a high confidence gold deportment methodology in developing insights for problem diagnostics and to identify opportunities for metallurgical improvements. A systematic and holistic approach involving different fields of expertise is critical for successful development and delivery of solutions for complex ore bodies. Investigations were conducted to determine the condition and stability of the existing decline at amine in the Kalahari Manganese Field, Northern Cape Province, South Africa. During the inspection of the decline, voids were identified behind the concrete lining on the hangingwall and sidewalls over a total linear distance of 230 m. The voids did not provide confinement and, as a result, self-mining was occurring behind the lining. Water was flowing into the decline, over a total linear distance of 100 m, at areas where the decline intersected incompetent rock units, causing softening of the concrete lining and deterioration of the surrounding rock mass. Further damage to the concrete lining was caused by expansion and contraction of the wet red clay unit. Remedial work comprised void filling and water sealing to prevent further deterioration of the decline and ensure that it remained operable for the remainder of the life of mine. Void filling was accomplished by drilling rows of holes along the decline to access the voids and filling the voids with foam. This was followed by the sealing with polymer fluids. Telescopic pipes were also installed to allow water to drain off. A visual inspection was conducted and check-holes were drilled to assess the quality of the remedial work. The void filling material had penetrated cracks in the concrete lining, and areas where voids were intersected by check-holes were re-filled. Additional holes were drilled to re-seal areas that were still wet. The remedial work was completed successfully, as all voids were filled and stability achieved without compromising the concrete lining. The ingress of groundwater was also reduced to some residual dampness.

"SynopsisCalcined basic nickel carbonate (BNC) concentrate was smelted in a pilotscale DC arc furnace to produce a nickel metal. The furnace was continuously operated for 12 days (24 hour/day), during which twelve different smelting conditions were investigated, with the major variables being reductant type and feed rate, flux composition and addition, and BNC feed rate.The 200 kW DC arc furnace was operated at power levels between 110 and 165 kW and at a total feed rate of 78 to 96 kg/h, resulting in an average slag and metal tapping temperature of about 1650°C. A total of 7.2 t of BNC were smelted, producing about 5.44 t of nickel metal and 2.94 t of slag. Nickel recoveries of 96.4% and higher were achieved, and the slag nickel content was as low as 0.1%. The major impurities in the metal were iron (mostly from oxygen lancing) and carbon. The calculated feed carry-over was less than 0.85% and the graphite electrode consumption was between 2.8–3.3 kg/MWh.IntroductionOne of the most distinctive advantages of DC open-arc smelting is the ability to process fine raw materials without any major issues with regard to the operability of the furnace, metal recovery, and metal quality. This has been demonstrated in Mintek’s DC arc pilot plant facilities over a period of about three decades (Curr et al., 1983). The materials that have been processed include laterite (Kotze, 2002), chromite fines (Curr et al., 1983), manganese fines (Lagendijk et al., 2010), PGM concentrates (Shaw et al., 2013), electric arc furnace (EAF) dust (Denton et al., 2005; Abdellatif, 2002a) and stainless steel (SS) dust (Denton et al., 2005; Abdellatif, 2002a; Goff and Denton, 2004), and petroleum fly ash (Abdellatif, 2002b). The top particle size of such materials can vary from a few millimetres (e.g. laterite) to micrometres (EAF and SS dust). Dusting, whether due to physical carryover of feed or to the arc side reactions, has been proven to be a non-issue. As such, the applications of DC open-arc furnaces have the potential to be extended to other raw materials such as particulate nickel oxide, which has a particle size much less than 100 µm.Nickel oxide is typically produced from laterite ore by sulphuric acid leaching, purification, and precipitation as basic nickel carbonate (BNC) (Rhamdhani, Jak, and Hayes, 2008) or as mixed hydroxide precipitate (MHP) (Mackenzie, Virnig, and Feather, 2006), and finally calcining at moderate temperatures (800–1200°C). The NiO product is very fine, with an average particle size in the range of 10–20 µm and a NiO content of more than 99%."

Mineral Resources estimation plays a crucial role in the profitability of the future of mining operations. The conventional geostatistical methods used for grade estimation require expertise, understanding and knowledge of the spatial statistics, resource modelling, geology, mining engineering as well as clean validated data to build accurate block models. However, the geostatistical models are sensitive to changes in data and would have to be rebuilt on newly acquired data with different characteristics, which has proved to be a time-consuming process. Machine learning methods have in recent years been proposed as an alternative to the geostatistical methods to alleviate the problems these might suffer from in Mineral Resource estimation. In this paper, a systematic literature review of machine learning methods used in Mineral Resource estimation is presented. This has been conducted on such studies published during the period 1990 to 2019. The types, performances, and capabilities, of several machine learning methods have been evaluated and compared against each other, and against the conventional geostatistical methods. The results, based on 31 research studies, show that the machine learningbased methods have outperformed the conventional grade estimation modelling methods. The review also shows there is active research on applying machine learning to grade estimation from exploration through to exploitation. Further improvements can be expected if advanced machine learning techniques are to be used.

The value realised by an open pit mine depends on the quality and integrity of the mine planning process as well as the level of execution against these mine plans. When managing the execution against the mine plan, how well the mine plan is executed spatially, is of critical importance. The short-term mine plan is the plan that is physically executed on most open pit mines. At the same time, the spatial mine-to-plan compliance is typically reconciled against the annual business plan. Short-term mine planning, therefore, plays an important role in the effectiveness of the spatial mine-to-plan compliance reconciliation process by providing operational teams with detailed designs and schedules, while ensuring that mining execution is spatially aligned with the business plan. The Sishen open pit iron ore mine (Sishen) strives to continuously improve spatial compliance to the business plan. Sishen enhanced the role that short-term mine planning plays in enabling the forward-looking component of the spatial mine-to-plan compliance reconciliation process. The enhanced short-term mine planning process focuses on detailed tactical sequence designs per mining pushback, the health of value chain buffers, spatial plan-to-plan reconciliation, and the associated management routines. This led to improved spatial mine-to-plan compliance to the business plan from 71% to 94% over the four-year period from 2020 to 2023 inclusive. These results indicate that the application of short-term mine planning as part of an integrated spatial mine-to-plan compliance process at open pit mines can contribute positively to improving the level of spatial execution against the business plan. This paper presents the enhancements made to the short-term mine planning process, which other open pit mining operations can consider to improve spatial mine-to-plan compliance.

A modified in situ leaching method for extracting gold from oxidized gold ores using a non cyanide lixiviant is proposed. A non cyanide lixiviant is suggested because of the obvious concerns posed by injecting cyanide bearing solutions into the subsurface. Oxidized gold ores are the initial focus because earlier research on the use of sodium thiosulphate as a lixiviant under anaerobic conditions indicated that the presence of pyrite led to rapid thiosulphate breakdown. A reconnaissance research programme, involving ore characterization and hydrometallurgical testwork on samples from four Australian ore deposits and preliminary reactive transport modelling studies was carried out. This work showed that lixiviant-oxidant combinations of sodium thiosulphate and ferric EDTA, and iodide and iodine are both capable of extracting high percentages of accessible gold from the selected samples under anaerobic conditions. The ore characterization and reactive transport studies, suggested that both physical and chemical methods of permeability enhancement may be required to lift bulk permeability and the availability of gold for dissolution to sufficiently high levels to obtain adequate gold recoveries. Physical permeability enhancement could be achieved by blasting and/or hydraulic fracturing of the ore. Assuming that such methods prove to be both necessary and economically viable, the mining method would no longer be regarded as simple in situ leaching. South African discard coal fines and K₂CO₃ blends were heated in a laboratory-scale rotary kiln to produce ashes for H₂SO₄ leaching tests. The optimized H₂SO₄ leaching conditions of 6.12 mol.dm³ (M) H₂SO₄, solid to liquid ratios 1:5 and 1:10, and 80°C for 8 hours were used. K₂CO₃ was added to increase the dissolution efficiency of K. The objective was to determine if the Al present in metakaolinite (Al₂O₃.2SiO₂), the Al, K, and Ti in the alumino-silicate glasses, and the Ti in rutile (TiO₂) in the ashes could be selectively dissolved in H₂SO₄. XRF results show that the ashes formed at 700°C dissolved more efficiently (87% Al, 89% K and 23% Ti) compared to the ashes formed at 1050°C. This can be attributed to the presence of Al₂O₃.2SiO₂, K₂CO₃ melt, K₂CO₃ remnants, KAl(SO₄)₂, and K-aluminosilicate glass in these ashes. XRD results indicate that the ashes prepared at 1050°C contained anorthite (CaAl₂Si₂O₈), microcline (KAlSi₃O₈), pseudomullite (Al₂O₃.SiO₂), and silicon spinel (2Al₂O₃.3SiO₂), which are either insoluble or only sparingly soluble in H₂SO₄. These minerals resulted in the lower dissolution efficiencies of Al and K. Based on the high dissolution efficiencies of Al and K for the ashes produced at 700°C, coal fines blended with K₂CO₃ could possibly be utilized as feedstocks for the production of aluminium(III), potassium(I), and titanium(IV) and a sulphate-containing leach liquor. Furthermore, the environmental issues and costs associated with the handling and disposal of large volumes of coal fines will also be resolved.

"Mineral Resource estimation (MRE) and classification are highly dependent on the confidence in the model of the orebody geometry, known as the geological model, within which the estimates are constrained. An understanding of the geology of a deposit is thus fundamental to the Mineral Resource evaluation process. The geological model is a function of the structural and depositional complexity of the geology captured by drilling information, which is limited in the early stages of a project. The information effect has a significant impact in terms of the interpretation of the geology as well as the estimation of grade continuity and the resultant risk associated with the Mineral Resource estimate and classification.Therefore, as new drilling information becomes available, it is necessary to update and refine the geological model to appropriately constrain the resource estimates. The grade information is also updated, including statistics and the spatial correlation characteristics. This refinement is based on geological interpretations derived from the drillhole information that becomes available throughout the life of the mine; orebody knowledge that comes from working experience of the deposit, as well as familiarity with the software package used for modelling, is also important.In updating, the potential to identify new resources in previously unknown areas may be realized. The opposite may also occur where previous interpretations of ore continuity are refuted. Both scenarios could result from a better understanding of the geology of the deposit and thus a more realistic MRE, which reduces geological risk. This paper describes how newly drilled advanced grade-control holes for a gold deposit in Mali were used to refine the 3D geological model for the deposit in an attempt to identify the potential for additional oxide ore using conventional geostatistical evaluation techniques."

"The effect of some of the system variables in forcing and exhausting ducted fan systems on ventilation in an empty heading was investigated using computational fluid dynamics(CFD) and comparative analyses. The diameter of the duct, duct mouth to face distance, and the power of the fan (quantity delivered by the fan) were varied and their effect on ventilation determined through a comparative analysis of the flow rates calculated close to the face of the heading. Estimation models were developed, which can be used to calculate the flow rate close to the face of the empty heading for different settings of the system variables studied.The study showed that recirculation for a forcing ducted fan system can be reduced by increasing the duct diameter or increasing the duct mouth to face distance. For the exhausting ducted fan system, higher flow rates were achieved by reducing the duct mouth to face distance, andincreasing the fan design flow rate and duct diameter.The outcomes of this investigation will help ventilation engineers in deciding the optimum duct fan system required for sufficient ventilation.IntroductionThe ventilation of underground mines, irrespective of the type of mine and mining method, is divided into two broad branches, the primary ventilation and secondary or auxiliary ventilation. The primary ventilation is responsible for the total volumetric flow through the mine and the auxiliary ventilation is responsible for the ventilation of the development ends, production areas, and facilities disconnected from the main circuit with no through-ventilation connections. Auxiliary ventilation is the more difficult to achieve (Bise, 1996), and the disruption of this ventilation system is considered to be one of the primary factors contributing to methane and coal dust explosions (Creedy, 1996). A number of causalities have been recorded by many authors due to these explosions (Phillips and Brandt, 1995; Dubinski et al., 2011; Phillips, 2015). The ventilation of short headings, less than 10 m in depth, can be carried out without the use of any auxiliary equipment (Feroze and Phillips, 2015). However, for headings deeper than 10 m, auxiliary ventilation systems are required. These are generally classified into the three basic types, namely line brattice (LB) ventilation systems, ducted fan systems, and jet fans (Figures 1 through Figure 3 respectively)."

Selective flotation to separate copper minerals from, for example, Mo- and/or As-bearing minerals is a continuing problem because the selectivity of current systems is imperfect. Selective Cu-As flotation is currently difficult, and the most common Cu-Mo selective flotation method uses NaHS; this must be done in an enclosed system because, under acidic conditions, this method produces hydrogen sulfide. In this paper, some novel alternative flotation processes that use redox reactions are discussed; these methods have a much lower environmental impact. Oxidation and reduction reactions can be used to make copper minerals more hydrophilic and Mo-bearing minerals more hydrophobic. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses indicated that the copper minerals became hydrophilic because hydrophilic iron precipitated and several hydroxides covered the copper minerals’ surfaces, whereas the molybdenum minerals remained hydrophobic because their sulfide surfaces were not covered. Flotation experiments on these minerals after redox treatments indicated that excellent separation of Cu-minerals from Mo-minerals can be achieved. Possible mechanisms for this separation were investigated using detailed surface analyses and thermodynamic calculations. The additives used to initiate the redox reactions are easy to handle and make these new flotation procedures better than current processes because the new methods do not emit effluent gas and because they are commercially viable.
