Although the technology involved in removing material from below the earth's surface has a long history, communication systems in underground workings are relatively new to the industry. Communication equipment did not begin appearing in underground mines until the early 1900's. Figure 1-1 shows a miner using a Western Electric standard telephone set for underground mines in 1913. These early phones were essentially the same as those used aboveground, except that they were enclosed in cast-iron boxes as protection against moisture, acid fumes, and gases. In the 1950's, the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Co. of West Virginia introduced a telephone set for use in explosive atmospheres that was designed around the philosophy of explosion containment. To contain an explosion within the telephone set required a 39-pound casing, which greatly limited portability. [ ] Both of these telephone sets required "pipe" or conduit, not a very practical item for a 100-squaremile coal mine. A common thread prevalent in the first 40 years of design and development is that the primary effort was placed on the telephone set. In the early 19701s, as work began on the design of modern communication systems for use in underground mine environments, the following requirements were established: 1. Must meet intrinsic safety standards .--This applies not only to coal mines, but to other explosive environments. 2. Must be compatible with the environment.--The system must with- stand dust, moisture, and corrosive conditions. 3. Must be rugged in structure.-- The system must withstand maintenance by 10-inch pliers and 4-pound hammers, as well as impact from a falling piece of roof. 4. Must be size-flexible.--Whatever is built must be sized for the small operator as well as the large companies. 5. Must be a total system in design.--The system must be intrinsically safe, including cable, power supply, and station set. 6. Must work with present telephone system.--The system should be compatible with aboveground communications already in place; it should not be the single cause of change in aboveground communications. 7. Value-added pricing.--The system should be reasonably priced so that savings created by its introduction will more than offset the installation cost.

The Bureau of Mines sole-heated oven has been used for studying coal expansion for some 20 years. During the period before 1940 emphasis was placed on studies of the mechanism of coal expansion and the effects of variations in operating conditions on the results. Since 1940 emphasis has shifted to a survey of the expansion properties of various coking coals. Because additional information concerning a number of unsolved problems in connection with the earlier studies appeared highly desirable, this investigation of the use of sole-heated ovens for studying coal expansion was undertaken. The principal findings, in order of their discussion in the text, may be summarized as follows. 1. Expansion results for binary blends of coking coals exhibit nonadditive behavior, both positive and negative deviations from additive behavior being noted, depending on the particular coals tested. Additive behavior can be achieved, however, either by charging the blend components in separate layers (which indicates that the observed phenomena are not characteristic of the particular expansion oven used) or by testing relatively coarse sizes of coal (which suggests that the effects of crushing on the expansion properties of coking coals may be even more complex than is generally recognized).

Introduction A wealth of information exists which deals with electrical grounding, both from a general viewpoint and from a specifically mine-oriented approach. Many parameters must be investigated in order to thoroughly cover all of the variables which govern the performance of electrical grounding systems. The emphasis of this work on open-pit practices re- presents a new development in the field of grounding research, and an exhaustive review of the relevant historical documentation is especially desirable. Grounding System Purposes What purposes are served by a grounding system? The answer is four-fold and may be summarized as follows. First, it must limit potential gradients between conducting materials in a given area (56). When a phase conductor comes into contact with a machine frame, current flows through the equipment, which tends to become elevated above ground by an amount equal to the voltage on the conductor. If a man were to touch the machine while he was simultaneously connected to ground in some manner, his body would also tend to become elevated in potential, possibly to a lethal extent. Thus, the grounding system should provide a low- resistance path for the fault current to return to the source. The maxi- mum potential to which a man could be exposed when touching a machine frame is equal to the voltage drop along the ground conductors inside the power cable, as shown in Figure 1 (54). The Bureau of Mines studied the standard free energies2 of formation of ferrous fluoride (FeF2) and ferric fluoride (FeF3) with high-temperature galvanic cells employing calcium fluoride doped with 1 mole-pet yttrium fluoride as the electrolyte. A free-energy change for the cell reaction Fe (s) + NiF2 (S) = FeF2 (S) + Ni (s) together with the standard free energy of formation of nickel fluoride yields a standard free energy of formation of ferrous fluoride from the elements of ?GF° = -168.74 + 30.63 x 10-3T ± 0.41 kcal/mole (897-1,098 K). (2) Combining the standard free energies of formation of magnesium fluoride, ferric oxide, and magnesium oxide with the free-energy change for the overall cell reaction 3MgO(s) + 2FeF3 (s) = 3MgF2 (S) + Fe2 03 (S) (3) gives a standard free energy of formation of ferric fluoride from the elements as ?Gf° = -281.45 + 90.46 X 10-3T ± 0,67 kcal/mole (880-935 K). (4) Free energies and equilibrium fluorine pressures for the two univariant equilibria of the Fe-F system are tabulated and illustrated.

Finite-element structural analyses were performed to determine the stress distribution and displacements around a single rectangular coal mine opening in a multilayered rock system. The effects of changes in mechanical properties of roof and coal layers, roof layer and mine opening geometry, horizontal-to-vertical load ratio, and structural geologic features on the stress distribution about the opening were studied. Variability in the stiffness and relative thickness of the immediate roof layers can produce a considerable difference in the stress distribution about the opening as compared with that of a homogeneous material. Changes in opening width and horizontal-to-vertical load ratio have different effects on the stress distribution about the opening depending on the composition of the roof layers. In general, where a stiff layer exists in the roof at the surface of the opening, the stresses are higher in the roof and ribs around the opening. Horizontal changes in facies in the roof layers produced by structural geologic features can also greatly alter the stress distribution about the opening compared with the simple layered cases.

It is often desired to obtain samples of air in places where collection by ordinary methods is not feasible, as in shafts amore means of descent or ascent are not provided, in sewer manholes, in gas or water wells, in empty oil tanks, and in sealed areas in mines. Heretofore, when such sampling was required, it was necessary to utilize the aspirating method, which was not always satisfactory; and to obtain samples of air in deep shafts, it was necessary to use long sections of rubber tubing, which was not always available. DESCRIPTION OF NEW DEVICE A new method or "device" employs a common snap-type mousetrap to break the neck of a vacuum tube at the place where it is desired to collect the sample (see fig. 1). A mousetrap is mounted on one end of a block of wood 11-3/4 by 3 by 3/4 inches in such camper that a lead weight attached to the trigger hall spring the trap when the device is given a sharp jerk. A vacuum tube is placed on the other end of the block and held in place by a strong rubber band. A strip of corrugated rubber is placed on each side of the grooved block to prevent the tube from clipping when the sample is taken. An adjustable shoulder, provided with a rubber cap, is pieced se that the neck of the vacuum tube will rest on it. The shoulder is made adjustable to accommodate various sizes of tubas and to keep the neck of the tube from breaking tee far back from the point. A metal handle is fastened to one end of the block, with a hole in the end through which the brass wire used for lowering the device is tied. The device is enclosed by a strong wire-gauge covering, hinged on one side and so arranged that it can be locked shut on the other side. This covering prevent: breaking of the tube while it is being lowered or raised in a shaft or other place. Brass wire of not less than 22 gage should be used for lowering the device. A detailed drawing of the device is shown in figure 2.

Provide a method for obtaining in situ measurements of coal cutting forces which are needed for mining machine design. Approach A portable in-seam testing device is carried to the face of an underground coal mine heading to measure the cut-ting force encountered by a continuous miner pick directly at its maximum depth of cut. How It Works The tester frame is attached directly to the coal surface with four one inch diameter threaded studs resin-bolted into 1-1/4 inch diameter holes which are drilled 30 inches deep. Spherical nuts and washers compensate for misalignment between the bolts bearing plate, and traverse beams. Spacers can be placed over the studs to assure that the traverse beams remain in the same plane. Reaching movements are planned and subsequently executed [1] using visual and somatosensory feedbacks [2], where absence of visual feedback is known to increase endpoint variability [3]. Visual occlusion decreases the ability to make rapid online compensatory movements, which results in initial radial deviations that are highly correlated with radial dispersion at the target. Perturbations of rapid, visually-guided reaches are compensated on-line and result in endpoint dispersions poorly correlated with initial deviations, emphasizing the strong effect of visual feedback in temporally-constrained reaching tasks. In control conditions (no vibration), these uncompensated, rapid reaches serve as estimates of the individual’s intended trajectory. When ride motion is present, trajectories of rapid, visually-occluded reaches provide a measure of the natural biodynamic response of the cantilevered spine-arm-hand linkage. These intended movement trajectories and the biodynamic response (vibration feedthrough) are used to predict the effect of ride motion on the performance of rapid reaching tasks. Goals of this study are to investigate the influences of vehicle motion on human reaching and pointing, and to reveal movement strategies used in visually-occluded reaching tasks. Methods A six degree of freedom human-rated Ride Motion Simulator (RMS) was used to generate a dynamic vehicle environment. Participants performed discrete, rapid pointing tasks to targets presented on three touchpanel displays under stationary and random whole-body vibration. Reach instructions included successfully reaching identical circular targets (Ø = 0.25”) with the right index fingertip as fast as possible. Targets were presented on resistive-touch displays mounted approximately 60 cm from the participant’s nasion. The touchpanel displays were located in the forward and lateral directions at eye level, and forward at 45° of elevation. These displays measured the spatial error of the reach destination. A ten-camera VICON motion capture system recorded the upper body kinematics of the participant. Reflective markers were placed on the participant’s torso, head, and arms. Initial kinematics of the fingertip (i.e. time and magnitude peak tangential velocity) and tangential velocity at target were used to estimate the planned endpoint of the reach. Results and Discussion Ride motion resulted in increased endpoint variability compared to reaches performed in the stationary condition. Reaches to the elevated touchpanel consistently resulted in the largest variability across all motion conditions, suggesting that a vehicle occupant would not be capable of accurately activating a control in that location. Principal axes of endpoint ellipses were along and perpendicular to the direction of fingertip movements. The mineral industry continued to be an almost negligible contributor to the country's economy as the Government continued its 1979 ban on any mineral exploitation for export; a policy initiated at the end of 1979. A national program had been underway since that time to map and inventory all mineral resources so as to permit future exploitation of mineral wealth in the beat interests of the country and its inhabitants. In March 1982, the British Sulphur Corp. Ltd., under contract to the Burundi Government and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (World Bank), began a feasibility study of Burundi's phosphate deposits at Matongo-Bandaga for potential commercial exploitation. The 1-year project effort was to define ore reserves, conceptually design mining operations and processing facilities, estimate capital and production cost, and develop a regional market and distribution survey. Work completed during the year comprised geological exploration and reconnaissance and 1,200 meters of core drilling. Reserves in excess of 5 million tons of ore-grade phosphate were estimated available for mining. Rare earth mineralization was associated with the primary apatite. The associated carbonatite within the rock matrix was preliminarily assessed to be of value as a raw material for the manufacture of cement. The contract effort was valued at $1.2 million? Matongo-Bandaga is located approximately 40 kilometers north of the capital city of Bujumbura and alongside one of the country's few paved roads.

The hydrodesulfurization characteristics of a Venezuelan topped crude oil and a Venezuelan reduced crude oil were determined at temperatures from 740° to 850° F, pressures from 800 to 1,600 psig, and space velocities from 1.0 to 2.0 Vo/Vc/hr. Kinetic calculations showed that under these conditions the desulfurization reaction was first order with respect to sulfur and had an average activation energy of 32.5 kcal/mo1. Catalyst life tests made at 750° F, with pressures of 800, 1,200, and 1,600 psig and space velocities of 1.0 and 1.25 Vo/Ve/hr, showed that the decrease in the relative activity of the catalyst was a logarithmic function of time or volume of oil processed and the amount of vanadium deposited on the catalyst. Comparative tests made with residual fuels prepared from a Wilmington, Calif., crude oil and a Wyoming asphaltic crude oil showed that catalyst life may be extended by processing fuel oil with a low metal content, but it may be shortened by the presence of large amounts of asphalt in the feed.

The Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977* defines respirable dust as dust measured with a device approved by the Secretary of Labor and the Secretary of Health and Human Services [30 USC 842(e)]. The approved sampler for respirable coal mine dust is the coal mine dust personal sampler unit (CPSU) [30 CFR 74; Jacobson 1971; Jacobson and Lamonica 1969]. The CPSU is generally called the 10-mm nylon cyclone, although the 10-mm nylon cyclone is actually just one component of the CPSU. The CPSU may either be mounted on a worker (with the sampling head positioned in the breathing zone for personal exposure monitoring) or in a fixed location for area sampling [Tomb 1990]. The CPSU consists of a pump unit, a sampling head assembly, and a battery charger if rechargeable batteries are used in the pump unit [30 CFR 74.2]. The sampling head assembly contains two stages. The first stage is a 10-mm nylon cyclone, which has collection characteristics similar to an elutriator. The amount of dust penetration depends on the flow rate [Jacobson and Lamonica 1969]. The second stage is a membrane filter (vinyl, pore size 5 pm) that collects the dust passing through the cyclone. The dust collected on the membrane filter is weighed to a precision (standard deviation) of 81 pg [Parobeck et al. 1981], and the respirable dust concentration in the mine atmosphere is then determined from the mass of dust collected and the volume of air sampled [Tomb 1990].

As mines become safer and major disasters fewer, the number of experienced emergency responders is decreasing. This decrease will create a gap in response expertise which could have serious ramifications during future mine disasters. While working toward safety goals which may make emergency response obsolete, it would be reckless not to acknowledge that the potential for disaster still exists and that the protection of miners in such circumstances must remain a priority. The Mine Emergency Response Interactive Training Simulation (MERITS) is a computerized mine emergency simulation that meets a variety of needs. It allows personnel in leadership positions to test their knowledge and skill. Groups of individuals composed of representatives from mining companies, labor, and government agencies can practice working together during the simulated mine emergency much in the same way an actual emergency would require. An individual could also run the program to enhance his or her response skills. With this training tool, responders will be able to learn from their mistakes before facing situations with potentially catastrophic consequences. This paper discusses MERITS and its use in providing command center training.

Thls report summarizes work done under Bureau of Mines contract H0357100, "Development of a Crimp Connector for Trailing Cable Splices." The purpose of this effort was to establish optimum connector design conditions to meet flex cycle, pullout and electrical resistance criteria on phase power conductors. Field testing of "optimum design" connectors is briefly discussed. One of the primary objectives of contract H0357100 was to enable one to design better performing phase conductor connectors. Illustrating the practical significance of this 1s a discussion on the development of a new splice kit for trailing cables. The connectors in this kit were designed in accordance with the design methods described in the contract final report. Kit components, test data, and a connector installation tool are also discussed. The successful effort on the phase connector has resulted in contract H0377042, entitled "Design and Testing of Joining Sleeves for Trailing Cable Ground and Pilot Wires." The purpose of this contract (currently in effect) is to improve ground-conductor and pilot-wire performance. Significant findings to date are discussed.

Longwall production levels are high, and there are several different sources of dust to contend with. If dust levels are high, the initial effort should be devoted to finding which source is the cause. Then, efforts to reduce dust can be concentrated where they will have the most impact. To control dust at longwalls, a large amount of ventilation air and spray water must be used. The water must be sprayed correctly so as not to blow dust into the walkway. Techniques to change local airflow patterns can be helpful. The shearer-clearer, as well as gob and wing curtains, are examples of such techniques. Low-temperature distillation tests at 200°, 350°, and 500° C. were made on a subbituminous coal from Boulder County, Colo., and a subbituminous coal from Weld County, Colo., in connection with a survey of carbonizing properties of American coals4/ and. investigations of their chemical and physical properties.5/ The coal represented by the sample from weld County was reported to give off combustible volatile matter at unusually low temperatures when placed on a fuel bed. The yields of tar and oil and the composition of the gas from this coal, as obtained in the distillation tests, did not confirm this report. These yields and the gas composition of the Weld County coal differed but little from those obtained from the coal from Boulder County. Both coals yielded tar and gas in amounts considered to be normal for coals of their rank.

The Bureau of Mines is engaged in the work of obtaining data regarding the physical and chemical properties of typical crude oils from the various producing fields of the, United" States. Preliminary reports have been published that cover the eastern fields* and the' Rocky Mountain districts.** Since the appearance of these, reports: it has been suggested that certain additional data. I regarding the samples would be of practical value. It was believed that a knowledge of the viscosity of crude oil was desirable, particularly in connection with the design and operation of pipe lines. In accordance with this suggestion, the authors have made viscosity tests upon as many of the samples of the two series as wore still available for examination. Determinations were made at temperatures of 70° and 100°F., and in addition the oils were Subjected to the A. S. T M, pour-test*** to as certain the lowest temperatures at which they remain in a fluid condition.

This report presents a U.S. Bureau of Mines study to identify the causes of self-heating events beneath the floor of a deep underground coal mine. Mine samples from both heated and unheated areas were examined by various techniques, including visual, microscopic, thermal, chemical, and instrumental tests. The combined results led to the conclusion that pyrite (FeS2) oxidation was the prime cause of the beatings. However, adiabatic oven tests of selected samples did not indicate the effect of the pyrite on the self-heating process, probably because of the experimental conditions. A fast, simple procedure to assess the concentration of pyrite in the mine samples was developed, utilizing the reactivity of the sample with an aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)

Mineral production was of minor importance to the country's economy, and Bangladesh was not a ranking world producer of any mineral commodity in 1980. Natural gas was the most important mineral exploited, and reserves were sufficient to allow a significant increase in its use. A greater proportion of the domestic heat and electrical energy needs could be filled by increased production and distribution of natural gas. Also, the export of natural gas was feasible either by pipeline to India or in the form of liquefied natural gas (LNG). Some nonmetallic minerals could be developed, as well as coal and peat, given sufficient capital investment. Bangladesh's strongly agricultural economy made fair progress in 1979.80.1 The major harvest of November-December 1979 turned out to be better than had been anticipated after an early drought left poor planting conditions. Stone mines represent the highest percentage of operating underground nonmetal mines in the United States. With the introduction of stricter Diesel Particular Matter (DPM) regulations, large-opening underground room-and-pillar stone mine operators are faced with implementing one or more alternative methods to reduce concentration levels including: install and maintain an effective ventilation system; install lower DPM emission diesel engines; the adding of DPM filters. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is actively researching various aspects of fan and stopping designs in an effort to improve the ventilation of these mines. NIOSH has identified and further developed three alternative ventilation methods for use in large-opening underground mines: split-mine, perimeter, and unit-ventilation. This paper describes the implementation of the three methods with respect to their use in mines of various levels of development.

Tests were conducted in the Pocahontas No. 4 coalbed in southern West Virginia to determine if successful degasification techniques, developed during an earlier study in the Pittsburgh coalbed, would be effective in removing methane from those usually more gaseous coals. Specially designed long-hole drilling equipment and Bureau of Mines continuous recording devices were used to measure the quantity and methane content of the ventilating air during the investigation. Infusions were made with water at normal waterline pressures ranging from 200 to 220 psi or at pump pressures ranging from 400 to 650 psi. Results of the tests showed that methane emissions from free-flow bleeder holes were as much as 131 cfm. Infusions of some of the holes increased the methane emission from other holes and from the exposed coal surfaces near the working areas as much as 1,540 cfm. The methane content in the main return-air currents after infusion was reduced more than 86 percent of the amount recorded before tests were made.
