In investigating general problems that relate to the fuel resources of this country, and in testing fuels belonging to or for the use of the Government, the Bureau of Mines has given considerable attention to the efficiency and economic value of producer-gas power plants. Government inquiries during the past eight years not only have shown a very low fuel consumption per horsepower-hour for these plants but have demonstrated conclusively the possibility of utilizing commer- cially low grades of bituminous coal, lignite, and peat in plants prop- erly designed for the use of these fuels. The anthracite plant has been recognized as a commercial possibility for several years, although the cost of the fuel used has in general restricted these plants to com- paratively small units. The commercial development of the producer-gas power plant in the United States has been largely within the past six or eight years. In 1909 the United States Geological Survey published in a bulletin entitled "Recent Development of the Producer-Gas Power Plant in the United States" a list of producer-gas power-plant installations. The data presented in that bulletin showed a strong development in this field and led to much conjecture as to the future of this type of power. Owing to the extensive introduction of the steam turbine, however, many persons predicted the almost immediate doom of the producer-gas plant. In addition to the inroads made by this formida- ble rival, the interest of the gas-engine enthusiasts became centered to such an extent in the oil engine that the gas producer was relegated to second place by many and absolutely abandoned by some. During the past three years the belief of many who were formerly firm be- lievers in the gas producer has been that this type of power has reached its height of development in this country and that from a commercial standpoint it can no longer be regarded as a complete success. Problem: It is estimated that 5 to 10 arc flash explosions occur in electric equipment every day in the United States. In the mining industry the largest single injury category of electrical injuries are caused by non-contact electrical arcs. Method: This investigation progressed in two phases: (a) 836 Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) reports of electric arcing incidents that occurred over a period of 11 years were reviewed, and (b) personal interviews were conducted with 32 individuals. A theoretical Safe Job Performance Model guided the study. Results: Behavioral dimensions were identified and included the effect of worker experience, judgment and decision-making ability, behavioral and organizational controls, and safety culture. Summary: The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted an investigation of behavioral components associated with arc flash incidents and developed recommendations for interventions based on findings. Impact on Industry: This study fills a vacuum in electrical training with a focus on the organizational and behavioral aspects of arc flash incidents. There search is cross-cutting in its scope, in that the results apply not only to mining and construction, but many other industries employing electricians. Although the majority of mine electrical injuries are the results of burns from electrical arcs, few miners are aware that such a hazard exists. A safety training program, which includes a video and an instructor's discussion guide, was developed for electricians based on this study's findings. “Arc Flash Awareness” was released in 2007 (DHHS NIOSH PublicationNo.2007-116D) and is available through1-800 CDC-INFO. Lower the respirable dust exposure of longwall shearer operators by keeping the dust cloud confined to the face. Approach Change the location of face-side machine cooling, water sprays. How It Works The dust breathed by the longwall shearer operator is usually produced by the shearer itself. The dust cloud originates at the face, and the exposure of the operator depends largely on how quickly this cloud spreads into the walkway. Water sprays on the shearer body can have a large effect on dust cloud spreading. Results to date indicate that sprays can help confine the dust cloud to the face if they are carefully placed. Otherwise they can make dust levels far worse. The worst offenders are often face-side sprays used to discharge cooling water from the cooling jackets of the shearer motors. These face-side sprays set up an air circulation pattern as illustrated in the drawing. Air induced by the sprays to flow towards the face, raises the air pressure in front of the face, which causes the air flow to turn and then move back over the shearer, bringing dust with it into the walkway.

Develop a down-hole replaceable diamond core bit that will reduce overall drilling costs and increase total available drilling time per hole. Approach A one-piece diamond core drill bit of unique geometric shape has been designed, fabricated and field tested. The bit can be withdrawn (or replaced) from the bottom of the well-bore without removing the drill rods from the hole, saving a significant amount of non-productive drilling time. How It Works The replaceable bit system consists of two basic subsystems: the removable core bit, and the equipment necessary to replace the wornout bit without pulling the drill rods out of the hole. The geometric configuration of the bit is that of a one-piece diamond studded cutting element created by "slicing off" two parallel sides of a conventional diamond cone bit. This geometric configuration, along with some minor modifications to the outer core barrel, allows the bit to be rotated in two planes and, with the retraction-insertion tools, raised or lowered through the interior of the drill rods using a conventional wire-line system. For example, to retrieve the bit, a retraction tool is lowered through the drill rods using a conventional wire-line system and at the hole bottom, the tool automatically orients itself within the outer core barrel.

Measure the leakage through individual crosscut stoppings quickly and economically so that the worst ones can be identified and repaired. (Typically 60 to 80% of the air supplied to a mine short circuits before reaching a working face.) Approach Most of the leakage through a permanent stop-ping is channeled through two windows in a temporary stopping, and air velocities through the windows are measured; leakage is determined from a formula. How It Works A temporary stopping made of plastic brattice is erected in the same cross cut as the permanent stopping, either upstream or downstream. The brattice is fastened to the roof, bottom, and ribs of the entry with spads. Normal leakage of brattice was allowed for in deriving formula, and does not effect results. For best accuracy the brattice and the stopping should be separated by a distance of one hydraulic diameter.

This report provides low-temperature heat-capacity data and entropies at 298.15° K. for magnesium metavanadate (MgV206) and magnesium pyrovanadate (Mg2V207). The work completes low-temperature measurements planned for alkaline-earth vanadates; an earlier report dealt with calcium vanadates.4 No similar data for these compounds have been published previously. Free energy of formation values at 298.15° K. were derived by combination of the present entropy values with heat of formation data. MATERIALS The materials used in the measurements were portions of the samples described in a previous Bureau of Mines publication by King, Koehler and Adami.5 Methods of preparation, chemical analyses, and X-ray examinations are covered in this paper. The indicated purity of the samples was 99.9 pct.

This information circular. deais primarily with an engineering descrip- tion of a type of longwall cutting and loading machine developed by Eick- hoff Maschinenfabrik, Bochum, Germany..: This machine is supposed to have been developed and tested during the latter part of 1941 and early 1942. The only source of information is con- tained in certain literature and engineering data, with drawings which were acquired by the Allied Military Authorities when Germany was occupied; and the information will have to be limited because the writer has not seen the machine in the factory or in operation. However, the information may be of interest to the coal-mining industry in this country, and for this reason our Government has decided to publish the data procured so far. The Eickhoff cutting and loading machine is particularly suitable for the longwall mining system. It can only be used under that type of mining system and is not suitable for the more common type known in this country as room-and-pillar work. The material for the description of the machine and its operation was compiled and translated from German drawings and operating instructions. These detailed drawings and instructions are on file with the Bureau of Mines and are available for inspection by any responsible person interested in the details of the construction of the machine.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines Information and Analysis Directorate collects world-wide data on virtually every commercially important nonfuel mineral commodity. These data form the base for tracking and assessing the health of the minerals sector of the U.S. economy. The Bureau's data collection activity was instituted by the 47th Congress in an appropriations act of August 7, 1882 (22 Stat. 329), which placed the collection of mineral statistics on an annual basis. The most recent authority for the U.S. Bureau of Mines survey activity is the National Materials and Minerals Policy, Research and Development Act of 1980 (Public Law 96-479, 96th Congress). This act strengthens protection for proprietary data provided to the U.S. Department of the Interior by persons or firms engaged in any phase of mineral or mineral-material production or consumption.

The prolonged exposure of equipment operators to shock and whole-body vibration (WBV) is linked to cumulative back, neck and abdominal disorders. In low coal mines, space restrictions make it difficult for seat suspensions to isolate operators from shock and WBV Researchers at NIOSH's Pittsburgh Research Laboratory are responding to these issues by investigating viscoelastie foams. For the full-load case, an ergonomic seat made with viscoelastie foams can isolate the shuttle-car operator from shock at 15 Hz. Researchers used results from additional foam testing using an analytical model to identify viscoelastic foams that provide shock isolation at a frequency below 5 Hz.

Improve the safety and reduce the cost of longwall entry support. Approach Replace the conventional wood cribbing with stronger, non-rotting and lower cost cribbing made of steel-fiber-reinforced (SFR) concrete. How It Works Conventional concrete can suddenly fail under excessive compression loads, but adding steel fibers to the concrete, before it is mixed with water, changes the failure mode to a gradual and controlled failure characteristic similar to wood. A system for making SFR concrete crib blocks was designed and developed (or use in constructing walls and cribs to support coal mine roofs. The SFR concrete cribbing is stronger and stiffer than wood, and avoids wood's disadvantages of: flammability, deterioration under chemical or bacteriological attack, methane generation, and relatively high cost. Use of SFR concrete also allows freer movement of miners, equipment, and ventilation air, because much less volume of SFR concrete is required than wood for a given amount of support, and because the roof-to-floor closure is greatly reduced by the stiffer supports.

Bulk carriers, freighters, and tankers are the three classes of seagoing vessels engaged in transporting mineral commodities. However, vessels in these classes are not exclusively devoted to mineral commodity transport. Bulk carriers move considerable tonnages of agricultural products as well as crude minerals, their concentrates, mineral fertilizers, and the like. Freighters, owing to their great variety, can be devoted wholly to hauling mineral products or wholly to nonmineral goods, as well as carrying mixed mineral commodities and nonmineral commodities. They include general cargo ships, full container ships, partial container ships, roll-on/roll-offships, and barge carriers. Tankers, although largely engaged in moving crude oil and refinery products, also transport liquid chemicals, molasses, wine, liquefied natural gas, and other fluids. Although physical characteristics of vessels such as size, draft, crew requirements, type of propulsion system, ratio of gross tonnage to cargo tonnage, and fuel costs have undeniable influences on shipping industry performance, problems of and changes in the quantity and types of materials moved also significantly affect the shipping sector of the world economy, and thus have a bearing on the minerals sector of that aggregate. Unfortunately, comprehensive global data reflecting changes in these critical variables are not published.

Provide optimum visibility of mining operations while maintaining protection and comfort for machine operators. Approach A cab with hydraulically powered variable-height control was developed and used on a loading machine in underground operations. How It Works The cab is attached to the vehicle on a horizontal trunnion located near the forward end of the cab. A hydraulic cylinder, controlled by the operator from inside the cab, pivots the cab about the trunnion providing variations of up to 16 inches in elevation. The nominal tramming position of the cab is with its underside 6 inches above the mine bottom. From this position the cab can be pivoted up, or down, so that its back end is elevated 10 inches, or lowered to the floor. (See Figure 1.) The cab encloses the operator for protection against both overhead and lateral obstructions, and it raises or lowers, allowing the operator to select the most advantageous cab height. The cab is angled inboard 30 degrees to the machine line of direction. The operator's seat swivels to allow view of the conveyor during loading. All controls are located within the cab and move up and down with it.

The uses of talc are many but are not, in general well known or fully developed within the last decade several companies have realized the possibilities of greatly increased use and have intelligently proceeded to develop some of the fields which seemed most promising. This has had a tendency to lift talc from the obscurity in which it had existed for years, but the work is only started and much remains to be done. Considerably more attention has been paid to the technology and utilization of talc in Germany and Austria than in this country, despite the fact that the United States produces 65 of the world's talc and Germany and Austria combined but 5.4%. In the "Bericht,uber die tatigkeit des verbends der talcum-interessenten in Oesterreich-Ungarn" (Proceedings of the Austro-Hungarian Talc Association), for the years 1912 and 1913, many notes upon new uses appeared, together with suggestions as to further development of old uses. Aside from a few notes on the use of tar in paper, little has been published in the English language upon this subject. By recent action of the Talc and Soapstone Producers Association (U.S.A.) funds for research into the properties and uses of talc have been made Available and it is hoped that markets will be materially broadened a a result of this work.

The occurrence of hydrogen sulfide in the gas in solution in the oil produced from the Tensleep sandstone in the Elk Basin oil field in Wyoming constitutes a serious hazard to persons working in, that field. Aware of the general conditions because of petroleum reservoir studies being conducted in that field by its engineers, the Bureau of Mine's willingly agreed to a request of the Petroleum Administration for War to publicize the hazard and the measures for overcoming it. In October 1943 and November 1944, the Bureau of Mines investigated the method's used in handling the oil and in disposing of the hydro¬gen sulfide that occurs with it. This circular reports the results of these observations. HYDROGEN SULFIDE OCCURRENCE IN THE. ELK BASIN OIL FIELD The Elk Basin oil field is in Park County, Wyo., and Carbon County, Mont. It is about 18 miles north of Powell and 12 miles west of Frannie, Wyo. The original Elk Basin oil and gas field was situated in an eroded depression surrounded by an inner rimrock about 200 feet high with a bordering higher plateau about 500 feet above the basin floor.

"Exposure to respirable contaminants in mine atmospheres has long posed a serious hazard to miners. The control of these hazards, some of which can have sudden and catastrophic effects and some others, slow and long enduring consequences, has been a major concern for labor, management and government alike. This concern has manifested itself in four primary mechanisms of control -- (1) regulatory control through minimum standard setting by the passage of mine health and safety laws, (2) engineering control through design and operation of 'mines according to the best recommended practices, (3) medical control through periodic physical examinations, wearing personal protection devices, etc., and (4) legal and social control through workmen's compensation laws for occupation related health deterioration:-The respirable contaminants in mine atmo¬spheres are toxic and explosive gases, toxic and explosive dusts, diesel exhaust particu¬lates, radon progeny, etc. Perhaps the most important of all these and the most widely occurring in mine atmospheres is respirable dust, an inevitable product of fragmentation, a unit operation fundamental to all mining operations. In fact; the-most serious health hazard for workers in the mining and minerals processing industries is still the exposure to respirable dust, and solutions to the problem of respirable dust disease remain to be found.The 1969 Coal Mine Health and Safety Act and its provisions for the respirable dust standards in underground coal mines are briefly reviewed. An overview of the research accomplishments in meeting the standards is presented. The current state of knowledge on the effectiveness of the standards and the new and emerging problems are discussed. A brief summary of the research programs of the Generic Technology Center on Respirable Dust is presented.In general, underground mines are becoming increasingly safe. Near-optimum parameters were determined by the Bureau of Mines for vapor deposition of rhenium on heated copper substrates by hydrogen reduction of rhenium hexafluoride (ReF6). High-purity deposits of nearly 90-percent theo¬retical density were obtained with the reaction chamber at 250° C, with an H2 to ReF6 volume ratio of 25 to 1, and with an ReF6 flow rate of 5 grams per hour. Some rhenium deposited as a loose, black powder. When the established near-optimum parameters were carefully followed, this could be minimized but never completely avoided. Varying the reaction chamber pressure, both above and below atmospheric, yielded excessive quantities of rhenium powder. Deposition efficiencies, based on only the coherent metal, ranged between 70 and 75 percent. Massive deposits contained only spectrographic traces of impurities. The average microhardness (Knoop, 100-gram load) of vapor-deposited rhenium was 907. Limited research on the deposition of rhenium-tungsten alloys by reduction of the mixed hexafluorides produced deposits in which linear composition gradients were pronounced; this nonhomogeneity was attributed to the wide variation in optimum hydrogen-reduction temperatures of the two hexafluorides (250° C for ReF6 and 550° C for WF6). Using deposition temperatures between 250° and 550° C did not eliminate the composition variations.

An economical, remotely operated (automated), temporary roof support (ATRS) has been developed by the Bureau of Mines for use on a single, fixed-head roof-bolting machine (squirmer) that operates in low coal seams (less than 42 in thick). The ATRS eliminates the need for squirmer operators and helpers to go under unsupported roof to set or remove temporary support prior to or during the roof-bolting cycle--a task that annually accounts for approximately 20 pct of all roof fall fatalities. The ATRS can be adapted to any squirmer used in the U.S. low coal fields. A prototype ATRS was field-tested at Imperial Colliery Co.?s Mine No. 20 in Eskdale, W. Va. The Mine No. 20 amended roof- control plan, which requires the use of the Bureau?s ATRS as temporary support during face bolting, has been approved by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), U.S. Department of Labor.

Network analysis of mine ventilation systems is not new, having been traced back to 1854. A Committee Report (1970) has also reported the extensive work done in this respect in the United Kingdom, Japan, U.S.S.R., South Africa, United States, and other countries. Wang, et al (1970) developed a computer program which is an improvement over the earlier one developed by Wang et al (1967). The program has been recently modified and extended to include methane emission features by Owili-Eger (1973). This computer program incorporates all the novel features of the earlier programs. These include the capabilities of mesh selection, free splitting, internal or external fans, natural ventilation pressure and fixed quantity branches. The program is written in Fortran IV and, in effect, is an experimental mine in which many ideas can be tried out. The computer produces, besides the input data and certain computational data, the quantities and head losses in the branches, the head losses to be adjusted in the fixed quantity branches and the fan operating point. The last named program, hereafter to be referred to as the PSU/MVS, is presented in Appendix I. The application of this program is demonstrated in this manual through a series of selected examples. Application of the methane generator program is not included here as a detailed report on the subject is available elsewhere (Ramani et al, 1975).

Table 28 and figure 10 show the number of fires and fire injuries for surface sand and gravel mines by state during 1990-2001. Table 28 also shows the injury risk rates, employees' working hours, and lost workdays. At surface sand and gravel mines, a total of 70 fires with 60 injuries occurred in 29 states during 1990-2001. Fifty-nine of the fires caused 60 injuries (none of the fires involved contractors). The yearly average was 5.8 fires and five injuries. The Ewhr value was 741 x 106 hr (Irr = 0.016), and the LWD value was 6,921. California had the most fires (nine fires and five injuries), followed by Michigan (six fires and six injuries) and Pennsylvania (five fires and five injuries). Of these states, Pennsylvania had the highest injury risk rate value (Irr = 0.052). Table 29, partly illustrated in figure 11, shows the number of fires, fire injuries, risk rates, employees' working hours, and lost workdays by time period. The number of fires and fire injuries show an increase during the second period followed by a decrease during the fourth period followed by a small increase during the fifth period and a sharp decrease during the last period. Employees' working hours increased during most of the periods. The Irr values follow patterns similar to those shown by the injury values.

To determine the torque-load relationship for SIB-inch (nominal)-diameter roof bolts, the Bureau of Mines tested 5 makes of expansion shells and 2 types of bolts (regular and high-strength) in 2 sandstone and 2 shale mine roofs. Unused flat-steel bearing plates in as-received condition were used in these tests. The relationship between torque and load was found to be approximately 50 pounds of load per foot-pound of torque for both the regular and high-strength bolts. This relationship is valid up to 130 foot-pounds for the regular bolts and up to 175 foot-pounds for the high-strength bolts. A torque of 130 foot-pounds on a regular bolt will produce a load of 6,150 ± 1,910 pounds 90 percent of the time, and a torque of 175 foot-pounds on a high-strength bolt will produce 8,050 ± 2,750 pounds 90 percent of the time. Above these values, the torque-load relationship tends to be erratic due to binding between the bolt and plug threads. Binding causes excessive torque to be expended in producing torsion in the bolt rather than tension. This torsion adversely affects the yield load of the bolt. Therefore, the installed torques should not exceed the 130-and l75-foot-pound values. A statistical analysis of the data showed that the torque-load relationship was not significantly affected by the type of bolt or expansion shell unit but might have been affected by the type of rock.
