The Bureau of Mines developed equations to determine the relationship of yields and products obtained from BM-AGA carbonization in 13-and l8-inch-diameter retorts. The developed equations indicate that results of carbonization in l8-inch-diameter retorts can be predicted from results obtained with l3-inch-diameter retorts.

"INTRODUCTION As a byproduct of its mineral investigation program, the Bureau of Mines has developed a number of operating devices and techniques worthy of note. This paper, prepared under the direct supervision of Paul T. Alisman, chief, Salt Lake City Division, Mining Branch, and under the general supervision of Lowell B. Moon, chief, Mining Branch, reports upon ore such technique.The Wright borehole-surveying instrument developed at the Homestake mine, Lead, S. Dak., has been described in several publications. 3/ For the benefit of those to whom the publications are not available, the instrument is described here. However, this article will be concerned mainly with the technique developed by the Federal Bureau of Mines for using the instrument.In the use of the Wright borehole-surveying instrument, it was found advantageous to develop a standard practice of operation covering type of film, preparation and care of film, loading film in instrument, placing instrument in container, exposure time, unloading film from instrument, development of film, and determination of dip and strike from film impressions."

This report describes the preparation characteristics of the significant coalbeds in Russell County , Va . Almost 2 million tons of coal was mined in 1961 ; 75 percent of the coal was cleaned mechanically in preparation plants in the county . The coal of Russell County is ranked as medium- to high- volatile bituminous , contains small amounts of sulfur , and generally requires some cleaning to reduce the ash content to limits acceptable for metallurgical purposes .

The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal , expressed in British thermal units , and the composition as shown by proximate analyses . To these , when required , are added the ash- softening temperature , the free - swelling index , and the Hardgrove grindability index . Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal , and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract . The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions 4/ issued by the Bureau of Mines ; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor and , if it is not , a price adjustment is made . Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples ( samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks ) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids . In addition , the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal . The Government purchased approximately 5 million tons of coal in fiscal year 1962. In connection with these purchases , the Bureau analyzed 7,114 samples . These are published ( table 1 ) for the use of Government officials and the public . A series of publications has been completed on coal analyses by States or , where production is small in any one State , by groups of adjacent States . This report is one of a series describing investigations by the Federal Bureau of Mines of the performance of various types of coal - cleaning equipment ; other reports in the series are listed in the bibliography . The information in these reports is useful to the coal industry and the manufacturers of coal - cleaning equipment in several ways : First , it assists the coalpreparation engineer who is planning a new plant to select the type of process best suited to the requirements by enabling him to forecast the yield and quality of clean coal obtainable with each type of equipment . Second , the information serves as a yardstick by which the performance of a plant can be judged and thus helps determine whether it is operating at satisfactory efficiency . Both these functions promote better coal - preparation practice ; that is , they help provide coal of more suitable quality for the market and likewise minimize the waste of good coal . This serves the interest of conservation with which the Bureau is vitally concerned . The present report deals with three plants using the Tromp dense - medium process , named after its inventor , K. F. Tromp , who developed the process in the Netherlands in 1936.5/ Selection of this particular dense -medium process for investigation was entirely a matter of convenience , and reports dealing with other dense -medium systems are planned for the future . Two baths are employed in one of the plants investigated . The first of these , handling 6- to 3 - inch coal , exhibited an exceptionally sharp separation between coal and impurity . This report presents the results of an initial investigation into some problems resulting from the use of assays representing unequal sample interval lengths and the use of the weighted average grade of ore in evaluating bedded mineral deposits . A mathematical proof and examples are given to show that the unweighted and weighted assay averages are equivalent when there is no correlation between assay value and sample interval length but that these averages are different when there is correlation between assay value and sample interval length . The amount of this difference between estimates is a function of the degree of correlation . One set of sample and assay data , based on 11 stratigraphic sections of the Phosphoria formation in Idaho , indicates that the relationship between the amount of difference between estimates and the correlation factor is approximately linear . If this correlation relationship can be established , within acceptable limits of precision , as a consistent attribute of deposits , the estimate of weighted average grade of ore could be predicted directly from the unweighted estimate of grade of ore by using the relationship as a prediction factor . Randomness tests on the sample and assay data from the Phosphoria formation , using the mean - square - successive - difference method , indicate that correlation between assay value and sample interval length ( each sample interval length represents an individual bed or stratum of the formation ) , apparently has little effect on the independence between successive assays , between successive sample interval lengths , and between the products of assays and sample interval lengths . Therefore , these data can be analyzed statistically as long as the original sample sections have been selected at random for sampling .

The Bureau of Mines carbonized 35 coal samples from Logan and Mingo Counties) W. Va., at 900° C using the Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association method, and determined yields of products and physical properties of cokes. Twenty samples represented the No.5 Block, Stockton, Chilton, Cedar Grove, Lower Cedar Grove, Alma, No. 2 Gas, and Eagle beds in Logan County, and 15 samples represented the Coalburg, Buffalo Creek, Winifrede, Cedar Grove, Lower Cedar Grove, Alma, and No.2 Gas beds in Mingo County, W. Va, Chemical analyses were determined for all coals. All coals in both counties rank as high-volatile A bituminous. Most of the coals are chemically suitable for metallurgical coals. Coals with accept-able ash and sulfur contents can be used as major constituents in coking blends with higher rank coal to yield coke with satisfactory properties for blast furnace use.

This report describes preparation characteristics of significant coalbeds in Tazewell County , Va . In 1961 Tazewell County produced 933,110 tons of clean coal from six coalbeds ; the Lower Banner , Raven , Jawbone , Upper Seaboard , and Pocahontas No. 3 and No. 5. Samples from all of these beds , except the Lower Banner , were included in this study plus a sample from the Pocahontas No. 4 bed . Of the samples collected , only one would require upgrading to be of metallurgical quality . The coals ranged in rank from high- volatile -A to low- volatile bituminous .

Laboratory and underground studies were conducted by the Bureau of Mines to evaluate the effectiveness of a water-powered scrubber and a brattice partition to create a clean split of air for longwall workers at the tailgate. In simulated laboratory tests, the system was very effective in creating a clean split of air. Observed system efficiencies were 74 and 84 pct with induced airflows of approximately 2,000 and 2,500 cfm, respectively. Underground evaluations indicated that the system was capable of reducing respirable dust at the tailgate. The first underground evaluation resulted in protection efficiencies of 30.7 and 42.5 pct at scrubber water pressures of 150 and 450 psig, respectively. A 33.7-pct protection efficiency was observed in the second underground evaluation with a modified partition and the scrubber operating at 250-psig water pressure. To be most effective, the system should have the scrubber operating at a flowrate of 10 gpm at 500 psig to deliver a maximum quantity of cleaned air behind a well-sealed partition.

A series of open-flow tests was conducted in the Chickasha gas field, Grady County, Oklahoma, during June, 1927, under the direction of the U. S. Bureau of Mines and at the request of the Oklahoma Corporation Commission. The purpose of these teats was to determine whether or not any differences existed in the open-flow volume of a gas well when taken through well-head nipples of different diameters, and further, to establish if possible a relationship between open-flow volumes taken through well-head nipples of various diameters. The open flow of a well is the volume or quantity of gas, measured under standard conditions, that a well will produce when open to the atmosphere. There are several methods used for determining the open flow of wells; some of the methods are more suitable under certain conditions than others. The Pitot tube method is the simplest, is applicable to almost any condition, and is the one most commonly used. In the tests described in this paper no attempt was made to compare the Pitot tube method with the minute pressure measurement method or the orifice measurement method.5

As a part of the strategic minerals program of the Bureau of Mines, nine chromite-ore samples were obtained during the period 1949-56 from mines in the vicinity of Red Mountain, near Seldovia, Kenai Peninsula, Alaska. This report summarizes the results of beneficiation studies of the samples at the Bureau's Juneau, Alaska, and Albany, Oreg., laboratories. In general, the ores were found amenable to concentration by gravity methods for producing concentrates that assayed over 48 percent chromic oxide. Intimate association of chromite and gangue minerals, however, necessitated fine grinding and limited the amount of chromite recoverable. Recovery of chromium in concentrate that assayed 48 percent chromic oxide or higher ranged from approximately 20 percent for low-grade ores (10 to 12 percent Cr203) to more than 95 percent for 1 high-grade sample (42 percent Cr203). The iron content of the chrome-bearing mineral -hence, the chrome/iron ratio of finished concentrate -appears to vary with the grade of the ore. Concentrates made from high-grade ores had chrome/iron ratios as high as 3.1:1; the concentrates from low-grade ores, however, had chrome/iron ratios as low as 1.8:1.

Laboratory batch-flow tests conducted on a highly ferruginous acid mine water with an activated carbon showed that ferrous iron is rapidly oxidized. This indicates that air oxidation of ferruginous acid in mine waters is catalyzed by activated carbon. The ferrous iron content of an acid mine water flowing through an aspirated activated carbon column was reduced from about 700 to about 10 parts per million in less than 1 minute. Highly efficient ferrous iron oxidation was achieved by conditioning the activated carbon by repeated treatment with acid mine water and air. The reaction proceeds rapidly in the acid environment (pH about 2.5) engendered by ferrous iron oxidation. The activated carbon was used repeatedly with little loss in efficiency, no discoloration, or solids deposition. In these batch tests, about one-third of the iron was adsorbed by the carbon, but with continuous flow, little iron adsorption is expected. Incorporating a catalytic oxidation step in the treatment of acid mine waters containing ferrous iron would greatly facilitate neutralization--precise control of pH, lower reagent costs, elimination of aeration equipment, and smaller holding ponds.

This publication contains analyses and related source data for 151 natural gas samples from 19 States. Of the total samples, 138 were collected calendar year 1989. The remainder were collected earlier, but releases to were not received until 1989. All samples were obtained and analyzed as part of U.S. Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted since 1917. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and chromatograph.

This report presents all available 900 ° C BM- AGA carbonization and related data for coals from the principal beds of the southwest Virginia field in a form which permits ready comparison of product yields and properties of coals and cokes . Thirty- one channel samples from Buchanan , Dickenson , Russell , Tazewell , and Wise Counties were carbonized at 900 ° C in an 18 - inch - diameter retort . Blending properties of 10 of the coals were studied , and expansion of most of the coals and blends was measured in the Bureau of Mines sole - heated oven . Ash Most of the samples were chemically suitable for metallurgical use in coking blends , and their coking properties generally were satisfactory . content exceeded 10 percent in only three samples , and none of the coals contained more than 1.5 percent sulfur . Dry , mineral - matter - free fixed - carbon content of the coals ranged from 62.1 to 77.5 percent . Expansion behavior varied widely , ranging from 16.8 percent expansion to 27.6 percent contraction .

The use of Diesel fuel continues to increase. In the United States during 1951 over 120,000,000 barrels of Diesel fuel oil were sold. The railroads used approximately 43.5 percent of this volume; industries such as smelters, mines, and manufacturing plants used about 12 percent; trucks, busses, tractors and bulldozers 20 percent; water craft 14.5 percent; and the remaining 10 percent was consumed by gas and electric utilities, the military forces, and oil companies. These figures were calculated from data issued by the Bureau of Mines. 2/ Complete data for 1952 are not yet available, but it is known that by December 1952 over 13 3/4 million barrels of Diesel fuel per month were produced by the country's refineries and by April 1953 the monthly production had increased to 1 4,333,000 barrels.3/ Information on the properties of this type of engine fuel is very important to the petroleum industry, engine manufacturers, and consumers. To supply this information the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, under cooperative agreement, are conducting annual surveys of Diesel fuel oil produced in refineries in this country.

San Juan County, which occupies the extreme northwest corner of New Mexico, contains large reserves of coal in the Fruitland formation and in the Menefee formation of the Mesaverde group. The coals have bright luster, are brittle, and break easily in handling. All mines sampled are in the La Plata-Fruitland and Rio Chaco districts of the Durango-Gallup coal field. This large area, all within San Juan County, contains numerous coal beds 5 to 15 feet thick. Ellis2/ mentions the Carbonero (Fruitland in this report) bed in the La Plata-Fruitland district attaining a thickness of 36 feet. This bed has been correlated with the Carbonero bed, formerly mined at Carbon Junction, near Durango, Colo. During the field investigation covered by this report, no operating mine in the Fruitland bed was working a bed thickness of more than 15 feet.

This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 295 natural gas samples from 18 States collected during calendar year 1963 as part of a continuous survey of the United States for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863 and 576.4 Five previous publications have been made to present the results of 5,998 gas analyses made by the Bureau of Mines Helium Activity , prior to 1963. The first three , Bulletin 486,5 Bulletin 576,6 and Bulletin 617,7/ contain analyses and source data on 5,214 gas samples collected from 1917 to January 1 , 1961. The fourth and fifth publications , which are published as Information Circulars , supplement the three Bulletins and contain 784 analyses of samples collected during 1961 and 1962. The present Information Circular is the third annual publication supplementing the three Bulletins .

Fires in zinc dust have sometimes given particular trouble owing to their resistance to extinguishers and the liability of explosions . Similar problems , notably with aluminum dust* , have previously been subjects of investigation by the Bureau of Mines .
