This report deals with information regarding a new Medium Frequency (MF) Wireless Communication System for underground mines. This new telecommunication system works on low loss electromagnetic wave propagation modes which allow it to provide quality radio communications almost anywhere in a mine. Tests show the MF system can provide improved safety and managerial control, increased productivity, better organizational team-work and reduced maintenance cost; furthermore, MF's unique design allows for easy installation at a minimum cost. This paper covers the following: 1) MF design plan, 2) Overview of mine radio communications systems, 3) Preparations needed for designing an MF system, 4) MF equipment, 5) MF installation, 6) MF design considerations, 7) MF design specifica¬tions, and 8) Recommendations dealing with MF system. Experiments in four mines are illustrated to demonstrate the success and via¬bility of the MF system. The mines range from small (500 tons/day) to large (67,000 tons/day) capacity and represent several different mining methods. The MF Wireless Communication System represents an advancement in mining communication and the groundwork for other advanced mine systems.

The study of oil production methods with reference to the amount of oil originally pressent in the oil-bearing, formations has developed the fact that-ordinary methods-of production remove only a part of the oil actually present. In fact, it is generally realized that when a field is abandoned more oil remains in the sand than has ever been removed. As a consequence of this realization, the petroleum engineer has devoted considerable tine in recent years in devising methods for increasing the percentage of recovery. His studies have indicated that in most cases the total production of a field is dependent upon the available gas rather than upon the available oil. Mien the gas in the sand is exhausted, oil production ceases even though there may be enormous quantities of oil remaining unrecovered. Consequently, any method of conserving the gas or increasing the supply of gas will increase the ultimate recovery from a field. The practice of producing oil under vacuum increases the effectiveness of the gas remaining in the sand, as well as furnishing more gas by evaporating the light fractions of the crude. Pumping ' compressed gas or air down selected wells of a lease has been found to increase the production of oil from the surrounding wells. Studies of oil and gas ratios have indicated that much of the available gas has been wasted as far as its effectiveness on oil production is concerned. his has led to the development of "stop cocking"3 and the practice of producing under back pressure3, which methods aim, to obtain more effective work from the gas with reference to the amount of oil delivered to the well.

The Bureau of Mines is conducting studies of the slags related to ferrous technology to evaluate acceptable substitutes for the auxiliary flux, mineral fluorspar, in foundry operations. This work is directed toward the Bureau's goal of minimizing the Nation's dependence on scarce and critical minerals Comparative basic practice cupola (18-inch-ID) trials were made to evaluate a waste material called "used potlining," which contains significant levels of fluorine, sodium, and aluminum in various compounds. Used potlining is recovered from alumina reduction cells after its useful life, and was supplied by the Aluminum Co. of America (Alcoa) to the Bureau for evaluation. The material in the lump and pelletized form (with limestone) provided extremely fluid slags based on visual observation during cupola operation. No adverse effects were found on cupola performance, metal and slag chemistry, the environment, or mechanical properties of the castings produced. Fluorine recovery in the slag was equal to, or higher than, that of fluorspar; fluorine losses to the scrubber water and solids were lower. The acidity of the scrubber Hater was somewhat neutralized. No difference was observed in furnace-refractory attack, as determined by the level of magnesia in the slag and visual inspection. The recovery of sodium in the slag, presumably as the oxide, significantly increased slag fluidity, suggesting that less than equivalent fluorine may be required. There was no contamination of the gray iron by the aluminum from the used potlining. Used potlining was completely satisfactory as a substitute for fluorspar in cupola ironmelting.

"The probability of developing coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) varies among miners in different geographic areas, coal seams, and jobs. Many studies have revealed the correlation between mineral content and the frequency and severity of CWP development still remains controversial. Furthermore, the mineral content and its variability in different areas is unknown.Since mineral content is expected to vary from location to location within a mine, between mines, between coal seams, and over time, this information will be valuable in understanding the variations in CWP incidence, as well as in establishing the appropriate kinds of dust to use in toxicological research programs studying CWP.Size-selective airborne dust samples were collected using 4-stage cassette impactors at 9 different locations in each of five coal seams. These coal seams were the Upper Freeport, Pittsburgh, Kittaning, Coal Burg, and Pocahontas. Mineralogical analyses were done by a x-ray powder diffraction photographic technique.Common minerals found in coal mine dust were illite, calcite, kaolinite, quartz, siderite, dolomite, gypsum, anhydrite, and pyrite. The distribution of minerals in interand intra location samples will be reported. Early results on the mineral content show wide variations between locations.in a mine and between coal seams, and small, but significant, variations between particle sizes.INTRODUCTIONIn spite of its long history of incidence, and the large amount of research conducted on it, coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) is still prevalent among coal miners and needs further research to develop effective preventive and remedial measures. Although the dose-response relationship between simple CWP and coal mine dust has been established (1), the causal agent(s) and the mechanism(s) involved in the progression of simple to complicated CWP are not yet defined. Many plausible hypotheses have been made to explain the mechanisms involved in the disease progression however none of them is satisfactory. In addition, the source of variation in occurrence of CWP among miners in different geographic areas (2), rank of coal seam (3,4), and job (5) remain unsolved."

This report presents 900° C BM-AGA carbonization and related data for coals from the principal beds of Nicholas, Randolph, and Webster Counties, W. Va. Thirty-three samples from nine coal beds in three counties were car-bonized at 900° C in the l8-inch-diameter BM-AGA retort, data from which have been correlated with industrial production. Host of the samples were chemically suitable for metallurgical use, and their coking properties were satisfactory. Except for four of the Lower Kit-tanning samples, the ranges of constituents in the coal seams were 1.8 to 9.0 percent ash and 0.4 to 1.1 percent sulfur, values within the range of accept-ability for metallurgical coals. Coke strength indexes were normal for Appalachian coals of similar rank, and the tumbler stability indexes of the coke ranged from 35 to 57.

Improve the safety of mine workers by developing a sensitive ground-fault relay system capable of detecting and isolating low level ground faults and thereby minimize the danger of electrocution. Approach Inadvertent, direct contact with energized conductors in underground coal mines is a major cause of electrocutions. Although relay systems designed to protect workers against such fatal accidents do exist in some industries, there are no effective ground-fault-sensing relay systems that address the special problems presented by power systems designed for U.S. mines. The Bureau of Mines conducted research to design and construct a sensitive ground-fault relay for use with low-voltage, alternating current (ac) mine electrical systems. Such a relay, sensing current leakage or faults in an electrical system, would send a trip signal to a circuit interrupting device which would then shut down power.

A portable radon diffusion chamber has been tested with electrical collection of the radon daughter nuclei for enhancement of sensitivity. The detector size was small enough to be worn suspended from the belt. With a battery-supplied high voltage the sensitivity was found to be 1.43 tracks/cm2 per pCi-hr/l of ambient radon at Sot relative humidity. The track densities on the surfaces of the CR-39 plastic nuclear track detectors were found to be non-uniform, making difficult the determination of average densities with high accuracy. The fabrication of electrets for use in the detector was investigated in accordance with published techniques with negative results.

Inhaled particle contact with pulmonary surfactant in the hypophase lining pulmonary alveoli was modeled in vitro by exposing two respirable sized dusts, kaolin and silica quartz, to lecithin, a major component of pulmonary surfactant, emulsified in physiologic saline. Lecithin adsorbs to the dusts upon incubation at 37º C and suppresses their cytotoxicity as measured by pulmonary macrophage and erythrocyte assays, suggesting that pulmonary surfactant provides a defense system against prompt cell membrane lysis by inhaled dusts. Subsequent pulmonary macrophage phagocytosis and lysosomal enzyme digestion of the coated dusts was modeled in vitro by incubation with phospholipase A2 for one hour. With increasing lipase activity, silica hemolytic potential was restored to native silica levels. Kaolin was retoxified to levels far in excess of native kaolin hemolytic potential. Elution, thin layer chromatography and phosphate assay of treated dusts indicate most lecithin on silica is digested to lysolecithin and desorbed, silica retoxification being due to surface and adherent lysolecithin effects. Most lecithin on kaolin is not digested in this same time; that which is results in adherent lysolecithin which is responsible for the kaolin retoxification. Digestion with phospholipases A2 and C together produces only weakly retoxified kaolin. Results suggest that surface adsorption properties which control the adherence of prophylactic surfactant distinguish the pathogenic potentials of quartz, kaolin and mixed dust.

USBM Contract H0133045 consists of the design, build and test of 50 waveform generators. The waveform generator is a small ULF transmitter operating in the 1 to 3 KHz frequency range for the purpose of locating trapped miners during a mine disaster. This contract provided for the design, test, and building of 50 waveform generators using a discrete component construction with an option of using hybrid construction techniques within 105 days after the effective date of the contract. Because of large quantity economic considerations, this option was not initiated. Two engineering models were designed, constructed and tested and 50 final production units were fabricated using discrete construction. Complete documentation is supplied under a separate package which includes final schematics, parts list, layout information, equipment specification, production test procedures and qualification test procedures. Ten units have been delivered to the USBM. The remaining 40 units are being retained for packaging under contract H0242010 Transmitter Package and Receivers. A great deal of experience has been gained as a result of this contract. A final discrete potted printed circuit configuration has been arrived at that is now ready for field testing. After field testing, any desired changes should be incorporated into a final design. However, as a result of the current experience gained building and testing the production units, this printed circuit package together with potting procedure could be improved to reduce future costs. For example, the printed circuit board could be increased in size by 0.125 to 0.2 inches and all components could be mounted directly to the board eliminating costly hand stacking of components. Assuring ground control safety in many mining and tunneling projects depends, at least in part, on an understanding of in situ stress conditions that will be encountered. Yet it is rarely practical to conduct more than a very limited number of stress measurements. Stresses along the route of a proposed excavation are typically interpolated from available measurements, often assuming a linear variation of stress with depth (or elevation). However, projects where multiple stress measurements are conducted often report more complex variations of in situ stress, usually in apparent relationship to geologic structures. These structures often include lithologies of contrasting elastic properties. A method is proposed for estimating stresses in these cases by first back-calculating regional loads from available stress measurements and then modeling the distribution of stress throughout the rock mass. The method has been successfully applied to a set of in situ stress measurements from the Coeur d’Alene Mining District of northern Idaho, USA. Results provided new insights into district stress conditions and the distribution of rockburst hazards along mine drifts and between various mines. This success should transfer readily to suitable deep tunneling projects.

Capture airborne coal dust generated by a continuous mining machine to reduce workers? dust exposure and to improve face visibility. Approach Develop a low-profile dust collector system which can be mounted on the boom of a continuous miner. How It Works When coal is mined with a milling head continuous miner, a substantial amount of coal dust (respirable and non-respirable) escapes the dust suppression sprays at the cutter head. This can cause poor visibility around the cutting head and can expose the workers to high levels of respirable dust. A practical means of removing this dust is with a scrubber mounted directly on the mining machine. Capital and operating costs have been estimated for removing sulfur dioxide from flue gases of a powerplant of 12,000-kw. capacity by liquid-purification processes, using limestone, ammonia, or sodium sulfite as the reactant. The annnonia and sodium sulfite processes yield end products that may be marketable. Coals containing about 1.5 and 5.0 percent sulfure have been considered. The sulfur dioxide content of the gases to be treated is 0.083 and 0.30 percent, respectively. Estimates have been made for 90-percent removal of the sulfur dioxide from both gases. A third instance has been considered in which 70 percent of the sulfur dioxide is removed from the flue gas of 0.30-percent concentration. The scrubbed gas would contain 0.09 percent sulfur dioxide, which might be within the permissible limit for discharge to the atmosphere in most areas. Although it is unlikely that flue gases with sulfur dioxide concentrations of less than 0.10 percent would require purification, a cost estimate for such a gas is included because an estimate is available for a British plant employing the limestone process at these conditions. Capital investment and operating costs, with no credit for products, are lowest for the limestone process for gases of both concentrations. Crediting the ammonium sulfate and sulfur produced in the ammonia process at their market prices at the end of 1956 of $32 and $28 per ton, respectively, the operating costs of the ammonia process become the lowest for purification of the gas containing 0.30 percent sulfur dioxide. The operating costs of the sodium sulfite process for purifying gas of high sulfur dioxide content approach those of the limestone process when the byproduct sulfur dioxide is credited at $14 per ton. Even if credit for products is allowed for the ammonia and sodium sulfite processes, the operating costs are higher than those of the limestone process for the gas of low sulfur dioxide content. Because of the large quantity of materials that would be produced by removing sulfur dioxide from a relatively small number of plants, credit for products should be allowed with extreme caution.

Sheet mica is an important material in the manufacture of electronic and electrical equipment. Large quantities are consumed each year as an essential component in generators, transformers, radios, television sets, radar, electric lighting equipment, and electrical appliances. The nature, structural imperfections, and impurities determine to a great degree the usefulness of sheet mica. Proper processing and classification add greatly to its market value. This report is designed to assist producers in understanding the complexities of marketing muscovite sheet mica. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Special acknowledgment is due S. A. This report details a study which was designed to assess the effect of retroreflective material on detection and form recognition of workers in the mining environment. Further, the study attempted to determine an optimal configuration of retroreflective material with respect to amount and placement on the body to facilitate detection and form recognition. The study involved a one-fifth scale simulation of the perceptual task found in the underground low seam coal mine. Four different configurations of reflective material were presented in various body positions, common to low coal miners, at three different locations in the visual field, i.e., 10, 25, and 45 degrees from focal line-of-sight. All reflective configurations significantly improve detection and form recognition over configuration (cap only) worn by miners. As the amount of reflective material increased, accuracy also tended to increase. Based on the configurations investigated by this study, the Armband configuration (i.e., refectorized armbands, belt, self-rescuer and battery pack) was determined to be optimum. It is recommended that an actual field evaluation be made using the Armband configuration to establish if simulator results are generalizable to the underground mining environment.

The operation described herein differs from the usual practice in the Tri-State district in two important respects: (1) the ore is loaded into cars which are tramped to the shaft and hoisted on self-dumping cages, and (2) about 30 per cent of the ore is loaded by power shovels. The four-month period covered by the cost data appended at the end of the paper immediately followed a period of about one year during which the mine was shut down, and the expense incident to the resumption of operations is reflected in the costs. The author acknowledges the assistance of C. F. Jackson, mining engineer, U. S. Bureau of Mines, in the preparation of this paper and the compilation of the data.

To reduce operator exposure to noise from vibrating screens at coal preparation plants. Background Hearing loss is one of the most common occupational illnesses in the United States. In the U.S. mining industry, hearing loss is 2.5 to 3 times greater than what is expected for the average population that is not exposed to occupational noise. Furthermore, studies by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) showed that by age 50, 90% of coal miners have a hearing impairment versus only 10% of the population that is not exposed to occupational noise. A NIOSH cross-sectional survey of coal preparation plants showed that 43.5% of employees were overexposed to noise. The study also found that vibrating screens were one of the top five loudest types of equipment at these plants?as well as the most numerous?making them a key noise source to address.

The Bureau of Mines studied the uniaxial compressive strength of model rock pillars as a function of the angle and spacing of noncohesive planes of weakness. The model pillars were prepared from NX 2-l/8-inch diameter drill core of limestone, sandstone, and granite, and the planes of weakness were diamond saw cuts ground flat and smooth. The angle of the planes of weakness, measured from the horizontal, varied from zero to 57° in approximately 15° increments. When two planes of weakness were used, the thickness-to-diameter ratio of the wafer was 1/4, 1/2, and 1, Approximately 400 model pillars were tested in uniaxial compression. The results indicate that the uniaxial compressive strength of model pillars decreases rapidly as the angle of the plane of weakness increases from 30° to 57°, and that the spacing of these planes of weakness has only a minor effect on the strength. The effect of the number of horizontal planes of weakness, with a spacing of 1/4 and 1/2 of the diameter, upon the compressive strength of model pillars was also investigated. These results indicate that as the number of planes of weakness increases the compressive strength of the pillar decreases. Normalizing the data provides useful estimates of model pillar strengths for any rock type.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) defines an independent contractor as "any person, partnership, corporation, subsidiary of a corporation, firm, association or other organization that contracts to perform services or construction at a mine." Contractors that perform specific types of work are required to report the number of employees who perform work at coal mines and at noncoal mines.

As part of the Bureau of Mines health and safety research program in strata control, a ground-penetrating radar (GPR) system capable of pene-trating approximately 10 ft into the mine roof has been devised to identify anomalistic conditions. The GPR system consists of a transmitter with carrier frequencies of 250, 500, and 1,000 MHz, utilizing a dipole antenna, and a receiver, consisting of a dipole antenna fed into a sampler with a time base housed in a storage oscilloscope. A computer was utilized for data acquisition and data processing. Data analysis by computer enhancement revealed recognizable return ra-dar signatures from the middle man rock and main roof of the test site. These stratigraphic anomalies can be cataloged for recognizable fea-tures, which from the past history of the mine may have been shown to create strata control problems. Early recognition of such features could lead to immediate corrective actions and result in the saving of lives.

Oxides of nitrogen occur in the gases involved in the use of explosives, in the gasoline products of welding operations in the exhaust of internal-combustion engines, in the vicinity of electrical discharges, in the combustion of nitrated materials, and in chemical process involving nitration or the use of nitric acid, Itis evident that oxides of nitrogen may constitute an occupational hazard in many industries, and therefore it is important that those concerned with the control of such hazards be equipped with a technique suitable for the determinations of oxides of nitrogen in the concentrations of,hygienic significance."
