A table that greatly simplifies determination of metastable transitions in mass spectra has been prepared. All the mathematically possible metastable transitions of any compound whose molecular weight lies between 26 and 150 can be determined from the table without calculation. The method of utilizing the table is described, using selected peaks from the spectrum of normal butane for illustration. In the mass spectrometer, ions are formed in the isatron and accelerated through a series of slits. Most of these ions reach the collector without further change, but a few dissociate in transit to form new ions. These ions appear in the mass spectrum at neither the mass--to-charge ratio (m/e) of the original ion nor that of the new ion. The U.S. Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with Carter Mining Co., conducted vibration tests of four off-road vehicle seats. The purpose of the tests was to determine which seat provided the best vibration attenuation under laboratory conditions. Laboratory tests were constructed to simulate the mining vibration environment within the limitations of the test equipment. The acceleration test levels and corresponding response of the seats were low compared to ISO 2631's fatigue-decreased-proficiency time limits. Two of the seats employed mechanical suspensions and two seats employed air suspensions. The seats were tested using a 22,241-N (5,000-lbf) electrodynamic shaker. Mechanical suspension seats were tested with various preload-to-mass ratios (PMR's) and cushion densities. Air suspension seats were tested with various air pressure levels and seat cushion densities. Air suspension seats provided good vibration attenuation if pressurized greater than 552 kPa (80 psi). Mechanical suspension seats' attenuation performance decreased if the PMR exceeded 9.8. Seat cushions of lower density provided less vibration damping.

A new technique was used to obtain detailed sonic logging data in drill holes above the water table at a coal mine site in northeastern New Mexico. The equipment was developed under contract to the Bureau of Mines and the U.S. Department of Energy to indirectly evaluate the in situ structural properties of coal and overburden. The system comprises a hydraulically operated, wall-clamping downhole probe compatible with standard four-conductor logging cable, and a surface control module. Resolution of layering is 0.6 meter (2.0 ft), and a redundancy of data from separate receivers provides accurate timing measurements. Preliminary results in the settled overburden of an excavated long-wall panel indicated a low average velocity zone, extending approximately 18 meters (60 ft) into the immediate roof of the coal seam. Subsequent measurements improved the field and recording procedures to produce high quality waveforms from which both P and S arrivals may be visually interpreted. Over a representative section of interbedded sandstone, siltstone, shale, and coal, Vp and Vs varied considerably even within lithologic units. Compressional wave velocity in the coal seam, Vp = 1,740 m/sec (5,700 ft/sec), was in the range of variability of published data.

This report summarizes all relevant findings and conclusions regarding capabillty of high-energy projectile impact to operate effectively in an open pit mining environment and to successfully handle secondary breakage and bench scaling problems. A silenced, aimable, mobile projectile launcher was designed and fabricated, utilizing a Government-furnished smooth-bore, 90 mm cannon. The silenced launcher was tested at the contractor's test site prior to shipment to ANAMAX Mining Company's Twin Buttes Mine near Tucson, Arizona. Demonstration tests were conducted at an inactive waste dump in the mine on 39 oversize boulders to determine the relationship between boulder size and projectile energy required for secondary breakage. The high energy projectile impact method (known by the acronym REAM -Rapid Excavation and Mining) was tested on an additional 23 boulders in the working mine and on 31 areas of potentially loose rock high on the pit walls. Most of the secondary breakage tests were successful and acceptable for open-pit mining purposes without producing large amounts of fly rock. Five of the 31 scaling tests were successful with one shot, but most of the remainder required two or more shots, and a few could not be dislodged because they were not as loose as they appeared to be, based on visual examination from a distance. Cost comparisons between the REAM method and conventional methods of secondary breakage and bench scaling are discussed. A film documentary, REAM--Mining Applications of High Energy Projectile Impact, has been produced by the contractor depicting the applications of the silenced cannon.

The Bureau of Mines has examined the operation of an oxygen sensor manufactured by the City University, London, England. The sensor produces a current proportional to the oxygen concentration by reacting oxygen at a nonconsumable cathode. The sensor design is unique in that the primary mode of oxygen transport to the cathode is by diffusion through a capillary, The sensor using this design has a stability of 0- to 0.02-pct reading change per day over a 4.7-month test, small temperature coefficient of 0.29-pct reading change per °C, and small pressure coefficient of 0.34-pct reading change per 1,000-ft altitude change, If this sensor were incorporated into an oxygen detector or monitor, this would be a distinct improvement in electrochemical-type oxygen analyzers and would be useful to the mining industry.

Subsidence and ground movement are phenomena common to and attendant upon practically all large-scale mining operations, and under certain conditions may occur in all workings, large and small. The interpretation of the cause of failure in rock masses involves a study of the nature of plants of weakness common to all rocks. The dominating planes of weakness can readily be determined by observation in any given locality, and in order of importance in the study of subsidence are (1) faulting planes, (2) bedding planes, (3) joint planes, and (4) other prominent planes of weakness such as thrust and shear planes and contacts. This report has mainly to do with the third item, joint planes, and is a preliminary statement which t to be followed by a more complete report in bulletin form.

Cameroon's mining industry continued to be dominated by crude petroleum. The value of petroleum output was estimated at $1 billion.2 The 1982 gross domestic product (GOP) was approximately $8.4 billion. During 1981, crude oil export revenues increased in value 30%, comprising approximately 56% of Cameroon's total export earnings. The 1982-87 5-year plan emphasized, hydrocarbon and agricultural development and targeted the exploitation of bauxite and clay deposits. New petroleum legislation was promulgated on November 26, 1982. Public Law No. 82-20 detailed hydrocarbon companies' obligations concerning oil and gas discoveries and exploitation. In general, the Cameroon Government has participated in joint ventures with private companies and has levied a 57.5% petroleum tax plus adjustable royalties. Exploration expenses were paid by concession holding companies, and the Government in the past has reimbursed 50% of expenses under certain conditions.

Argentina follows Venezuela and Mexico as the largest producers of crude petroleum and natural gas in Latin America. Argentina 1S practically self-sufficient in fuels, but relies substantially on imports for its supply of copper, iron ore, ferroalloys, sulfur, and fertilizers. Mining activity is limited and is in an incipient stage of growth, considering the country's potential for mining. Most nonfuel mineral output in 1979 consisted primarily of minerals used for construction, while only 9% are other nonmetallic, and 2% are metallic minerals. Argentina is Latin America's major producer of boron minerals and uranium (yellow cake). Mineral exports consist primarily of borates, uranium concentrates, and of late, some tin. These exports have in the past been shipped mostly to Great Britain. London banks have been involved in arranging financing for St. Joe Minerals Corp. IS planned development of the El Pachon copper deposit (see map), and were being counted upon to also back the development of large copper and manganese projects. The following is a review of Argentine mineral production in 1979: (For 1981, the production of boron minerals is put at 167,000 metric tons and uranium at 300,000 metric tons.)

This paper is one of a series prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines dealing with milling methods and costs. In view of the current revival of interest in gold mining, information dealing with practices and costs in the development of gold properties is apropos. Milling practice at a small gold property in the prospect stage is described where, with a small outlay for plant and equipment, development has been carried on for about 20 months on the proceeds of the mill operation with little additional expenditure. The paper shows about what may be expected as to costs at a small property operated under northern climatic conditions and with rigid economy throughout the plant.

The Bureau of Mines study described in this report was conducted in the Denver, Colo., area (1) to summarize existing conservation practices as related to the most beneficial utilization of deposits of sand and gravel; (2) to identify the conflicting positions of the aggregate producer, the mineral owner, nearby residents, and local government officials responsible for determining land status and for issuing operating permits; and (3) to show the need for planning in Denver and in other expanding communities toward obtaining the benefits of conservation of our rapidly dwindling mineral resources. In order to determine the effects of urbanization on the Denver aggregate industry, interviews were held with owners of sand and gravel operations, with producers of concrete and bituminous pavement, with city and county planning and zoning personnel, and with representatives of various interested organizations. The conservation and ultimate utilization of deposits of construction raw materials near expanding urban areas can best be accomplished by long-range land-use projection and the requesite cooperation of technically advised planning and zoning administrators, government officials, mineral producers, and land developers.

HIGH ACTIVITY, continuing the substantial recovery from the slump of 1954, characterized the domestic nonfuels-mining industries during 1956 Income generated in producing nonfuel minerals and mineral products3 increased 9 percent over 1955 as compared with a 6-percent increase for all industries. Thus, the 1956 performance of the mineral industries, while not as dramatic as the 27-percent increase obtained in 1955, continued to exceed the gains of the total economy. Other measures of mineral activity strengthen this conclusion. The index of physical volume of mineral production, presented for the first time as an integral part of this review, reflects significant gains in all major sectors during 1956; and, although the overall increase was diminished somewhat by the steel and iron-ore strike in July 1956, the all-mineral index (including fuels) reached a new high.

"The Jewell tunnel property, situated 3/miles north of Garfield, Chaffee County, Colo., was examined by an engineer3 of the Bureau of Mines in June 1943. Field work began September 16, 1944, but was recessed from December 26, 1944, to gay 15, 1945, because of heavy snows, and was suspended July 12, 1945, when rehabilitation of the New York tunnel workings was completed to the point desired.In its program of exploration of Mineral deposits, the Bureau of Lines has as its promary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources, to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as seen .as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Knickerbocker, chief, analyzes samples of ore and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. R. S. Dean, assistant director.For their supervision of the project and their help in revising the report, particular acknowledgment is due Wm. P. Huleatt, district engineer, Denver, Colo., and Paul T. Allsman, chief, Salt Lake City Division, Mining Branch.The property is situated in secs. 15 and 22, T. 40 N., R. 6 E., N.R.F.M. Salida, the county seat, is on the main line of the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad. The property is reached from Salida by following U. S. Highway 50 westward for 18 miles to the village of Garfield, near Monarch Pass, then northward for 3 miles by a very steep mine-access road up Taylor Gulch (fig. 1).The highway to Garfield is accessible throughout the year, but the access road from Garfield is generally impassable from December until June because of snow."

The identified helium resources of the United States were estimated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines at 617 Bcf, as of December 31, 1992. This includes 285 Bef of demonstrated reserves, 85 Bcf of demonstrated marginal reserves, and 37 Bcf of demonstrated sub-economic resources. The identified resources also include 166 Bcf of helium in inferred reserves and inferred marginal reserves and 44 Bcf in inferred sub-economic resources. The identified helium resources contained on Federal lands are approximately 172 Bcf, including 32 Bcf in underground storage in the Cliffside Gasfield near Amarillo, TX. Undiscovered helium resources in the United States are estimated at a most likely volume of 104 Bef, with a maximum volume of 249 Bcf and a minimum volume of 41 Bef. Also reported are 51 Bcf of helium in nonconventional and low-helium-content natural gases. Extraction of helium in the United States occurs mostly from natural gases produced from the Hugoton gas area in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas, and the Riley Ridge area in southwest Wyoming. Helium extracted from natural gas in the United States in 1992 was 3.3 Bcf. Some shortfalls in helium supply may occur in about 5 to 10 years.

This method was developed to obviate or reduce the eyestrain consequent to the regular filar-micrometer method9/ and to save time and work. The article stated that work was in progress on a micrcprojection method for counting impinger dust samples; this article describes the method developed. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The assistance of the personnel of the ventilation Department of the Anaconda Copper Miring Co., Butte, Mont., in developing this method and particularly in suggesting a suitable material to use for the microprojector screen is sincerely appreciated. Much of the work was done in the laboratory of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. on samples collected in Butte mines during a cooperative study with this Bureau.

Recent developments in mechanizing longwall it mining in Europe have aroused considerable interest among American coal-mine operators because this method provides an opportunity to improve safety, production, efficiency, and recovery. The success of longwall mining in Europe has depended to a large degree on development of effective roof-control systems. One of the major contributing factors in designing these systems is development off improved supports, which combine high load-bearing capacities with controlled yield characteristics, to use in the face areas. Other factors that relate to successful longwall mining involve knowledge of the structural properties of the strata above end below the coal bed being mined, movements of these strata induced by mining, and effects of the strata movements on the strata itself, as well as on the support system used. Extensive studies of the above factors relating to long-wall mining have been made in coal-mining countries abroad, and corresponding studies (1, 2, 3, 4, 5)3/ of room-and-pillar operations have been made in this country. Although descriptions and results of experiments of mechanized longwall operations in the United States have been published (6, 7, 8), this is the first instrumented study of roof behavior on a longwall operation. In view of the possible widespread application of this method of mining to American coal mines, where underground mining conditions are different from those found in European mines, an investigation was conducted at a mechanized longwall operation inn the Lancashire No. 15 mine, Barnes & Tucker Co., Cambric County, Bakerton, Pa., to study the factors that affect roof control. This report describes this investigation and discusses the results. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This investigation was made under a cooperative agreement between the Bureau of Mines and the Barnes & Tucker Co., Barnesboro, Pa., end was conducted in the Lancashire No. 15 mine located at Bakerton, Cambria County, Pa. Anthracite barley is considerably cheaper than rice. Its use, therefore, is attractive from a cost standpoint, - but its smaller size (through 3/16 inch over 3/32 inch round-mesh screen) makes it more difficult to use on some equipment when fairly high combustion rates are necessary to carry plant loads. Tests wore made in one plant to determine the performance of rice and various types of barley on a chain-grate stoker in a two-arch refractory furnace. In general, the efficiency and capacity increased with increased fuel size and volatile content. This performance is presented in tabular and curve form, together with a short review of the ignition and burning process on chain-grate stokers and a discussion of the operating procedures and limitations during the tests. In this particular installation, higher combustion rates and efficiencies could have been obtained with barley if the grate links had been designed for more uniform air flow through the grate surface. Careful maintenance and operation are particularly necessary for satisfactory results with barley on equipment not especially designed for its use.

Shallow underground voids resulting from early coal mining and other resource recovery activities over the past several decades are now being recognized as a significant cause of ground subsidence problems in developing urban areas. Uncertain knowledge of abandoned coal mines also imposes potential hazards in coal excavation operations since water inundation or the release of methane gas is a pricnipal hazard when mine excavation operations break into an abandoned mine. U.S. Army requirements for an effective method for detecting and mapping subversive man-made tunnels have resulted in a surface-operated automatic earth resistivity survey system with a digital computer data processing system. Field tests aimed at demonstrating the system performance resulted in successful detection of tunnels having depth-to-diameter ratios up to 15 to 1. Under the sponsorship of the Bureau of Mines, a similar system was designed and constructed for use in the detection of coal mine workings. This report discusses the hardware and software aspects of the system and the application of the high-resolution earth resistivity method to the survey and mapping of abandoned coal mine workings. In the field tests reported, the targets of interest were both air-filled and water-filled workings.

This report contains a description of the contract activities performed by ENSCO, Inc. under contract No. H0178069. The purpose of this project was to enhance the Bureau of Mine's Cableless Electronic Survey System use to aid in the drilling of long (approx. 2000 feet) boreholes in coal. This drilling is performed as part of the methane drainage program. The system that was ultimately developed was field tested and demonstrated in actual in-mine drilling activities. The significance of this system as compared to previous drill survey systems is the fact that it surveys without having to be inserted and removed for each survey point. It is so designed that it can withstand the shock and vibration experience by the drill string during drilling. This means an increased productivity is now possible in that drill operators can determine drill bit positioning in a near real-time environment.

"INTRODOCTIONMeasurement of the contribution of diesel exhaust to respirable aerosol in mine environments has become increasingly important because of current concerns over the occupational health effects resulting from exposure to diesel emissions. In response to this, the U.S. Bureau of Mines is developing and evaluating new sampling methods for measuring diesel aerosol in underground mines. Two such techniques are being studied by the Bureau, size selective sampling and Chemical Mass Balance (CMB) modeling. These techniques use measurable physical or chemical characteristics of a mine aerosol sample to infer the amount of diesel particulate material contained in the sample.Size selective sampling is being adapted for measurement of diesel aerosol by the Particle Technology Laboratory (PTL) of the University of Minnesota under sponsorship by the Bureau. 1 It is based on the premise that diesel and mineral dust aerosol can be physically separated by size and collected during sampling using inertial impaction. An independent effort by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health to develop a size selective sampling technique was also sponsored by the Bureau.The second technique, CMB modeling, is being developed by the Bureau as an alternative measurement technique to referee the results obtained using size selective sampling.3 It compares measured trace element ""finger prints"" of aerosol sources with similar profiles of mine aerosol samples. From these, the portions of the sample contributed by each source can be determined. Results of these investigations in underground coal mines have confirmed that diesel and coal dust aerosol are of different size and can be measured separately using size selective sampling techniques.A major difference in diesel usage among underground mines is the requirement for exhaust gas cooling systems in coal and gassy noncoal mines. Nongassy mines usually employ limited exhaust conditioning in the form of catalytic converters, which have limited effect on primary exhaust particulate. The cooling system in most general use in gassy mines is the water scrubber. This device has little effect on most of the gases but removes particulate material from the exhaust. 5 Because of this, exhaust aerosol characteristics in nongassy mines are expected to be different. To see if size selective sampling techniques can be used in such mines, the Bureau and the University of Minnesota conducted a second study in three metal and nonmetal mines, two nongassy and one rated as gassy."
