"INTRODUCTION The iron—ore ranges in the Lake Superior district are the Marquette in Michigan, Menominee and Gogebic in Michigan and Wisconsin, and the Cuyuna, Mesabi, and Vermilion in Minnesota. These ranges produce about 85 percent of the iron ore mined in the United States. Accident experience in connection with this production is better than that of the regions producing the remaining 15 percent. Production and shipments vary slightly from year to year but closely approximate each other over a period of years.This information circular supplements, continues, and combines the data in Information Circular 7321,2/ including figures of 1944 and 1945.During the 6—year period 1940 to 1945, inclusive, 481,485,475 long tons of iron ore was shipped from the Lake Superior district. 4/ Michigan and Wisconsin shipped 93,787,648 tons, or 19,5 percent of the total, and employed annually an average of approximately 14,300 men; Minnesota shipped 387,697,827 tons, or 80,5 percent, and employed annually an average of approximately 9,300 men. The tons produced per man employed is much greater in Minnesota than in Michigan and Wisconsin, owing to the large open-cut production in Minnesota."

The Bureau of Mines has successfully used sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) as a tracer gas to measure mine air flows under conditions where conventional methods have failed. SF6 was employed experimentally to measure accurately recirculation of return into intake air caused by leakage through an old stoped area, to check for potential leakage from an adjacent mine, to trace 10,000 cfm of "lost" air from an intake airway, and to measure transit air time through uranium mines. It proved useful as a means of accurately measuring airflow volumes in airways of large cross section and very low flow velocity, and in determining the recirculation resulting from underground cooling plants.

"In the United States there are hundreds of underground and surface (inside and outside) inclines at coal mines on which trips of cars are continually being run with coal, rock, supplies, and men. The safety of the men and prevention of damage to the slopes depend, excluding the personal element of the hoist-man, on the strength and condition of the wire cable, draw bars, and the couplings, and on the links of chains and pins as well. Within a recent period of four weeks there have been two runaway trips, one on the surface and one underground; it seems desirable to call attention of mechanical engineers and others at coal mines to the need for closer and more frequent inspection of the cable, draw bars, coupling links and pins, derailing devices, wheels, brakes, and other parts of cars or trips on which men are hauled on inclines. This bureau has never published anything on this class of accident heretofore.How frequently runaway trips occur is not known. If no serious injury or fatalit has to be reported to the State authorities, a number of such happenings may occur and not be mentioned outside of the immediate vicinity of the mine.Runaway trips can and do result in considerable loss of life, in injuries, and damage, either at or near the place of the break, or throughout a mine by causing an explosion of gas or coal-dust or both, This report is restricted to a study of the mechanical and physical phases of car trip construction and of the metal of couplings and ropes; derailed trips are not included and may be the subject of another paper. There is no need to mention gas accumulations, coal-dust and rock-dusting, open lights, protected power lines, and permissible equipment, because these have all been well covered in Bureau of Mines publications which have been widely distributed and partly or wholly reprinted by others.Most of the items regarding the runaway trips tabulated have been abstracted from reports made respectively by Clarence Hall, W.O. Research on improving haulage truck safety, started by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, is being continued by its successors. This two-part article reports the orientation of the renewed research efforts, beginning with an update on accident data analysis, the role of multiple causes in these accidents, and the search for practical methods for addressing the most important causes. Fatal haulage accidents most often involve loss of control or collisions caused by a variety of factors. Lost-time injuries most often involve sprains or strains to the back or multiple body areas, which can often be attributed to rough roads and the shocks of loading and unloading. Part II will describe research to reduce these accidents, including improved warning systems, shock isolation for drivers, encouraging seatbelt usage, and general improvements to system and task design.

"SUMMARYThe J. D. Price property is in Crittenden County, Ky., about 5-1/2 miles west of Marion. The Levias-Crittenden Springs fault system traverses the property. Mines on 3 miles of the same fault system immediately northeast have produced about 250,000 tons of fluorspar ore. The Keystone property, adjacent on the northeast, has produced about 150,000 tons of ore. 3/About 1934, lessees, sank a shaft upon the Price property to a depth of 111.5 feet and crosscut from the bottom of the shaft to the principal fault. No ore was found. Later, in 1942-43, they explored the same fault by core-drilling, but this project also was unsuccessful in finding ore.The author visited the property in September 1944, and subsequently the Bureau further explored the property by core-drilling three holes. No ore was found.ACKNOWLEGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. Experimental work is report on the gasification of 90-percent through 200-mesh, strongly coking Sewickley-bed coal with oxygen and with steam in three temperature ranges, namely, 2,700° to 3,400° F., 1,600° to 2,000° F., and 230° to 250° F. Thirty-one runs have been made, during which 56,000 pounds of coal have been charged to the generator at feed rates of 200 to 450 pounds of coal per hour. The average results, not the optimum results, are given in the following tabulation:

This circular outlines salient facts regarding the pyrites industry of the United States and the world. It is founded chiefly upon published information available in the literature of the subject. The United States Bureau of Mines has in its files additional and more detailed data upon many of the subjects presented very briefly here, and will endeavor to assist the mineral industries and the public by giving further information in response to individual inquiries. The bureau will welcome comments, criticisms, and contribu- tions of data that may assist in making later editions of this circular of information more accurate, or may aid in developing more fully the files pertaining to pyrites.

The object of this investigation was to determine the effectiveness of certain cationic flotation collectors , Ethomeens , in recovering fine particles of lead minerals from mill tailings at a grade equal , at least , to that of the mill feed ( 1.7 percent lead ) . The Ethomeens , derived from tertiary amines having one fatty alkyl group and two polyoxyethylene groups attached to the nitrogen , were evaluated by bench- scale flotation tests . The 14 Ethomeens tested consisted of four groups : Coco amine , soybean amine , tallow amine , and stearyl amine . The best results were obtained with coco amine C / 12 , soybean amine S/ 15 , tallow amine T / 12 , and stearyl amine 18/20 . From a feed containing 0.23 percent lead , rougher concentrate grades of 2.12 to 3.89 percent lead were obtained , with recoveries of 17.3 to 27.5 percent of the total lead . Some of the lead mineral particles recovered had diameters of less than 1 micron . In comparative tests , the Ethomeens , or polyethoxylated amine types of cationic surface active agents , were more selective than conventional xanthate collectors for flotation of slimed lead minerals .

The Royal John mine was examined in November 1942 by a mining engineer of the Bureau of Mines, who proposed development of the Royal John and other properties in the area. Geologists of the U. S. Geological Survey studied the area in 1943 and 1944 and made definite recommendations. Also, in 1943 the Peru Miring Co. mapped the Royal John and did considerable diamond drilling. The Bureau of Mines started the Royal John portion of a project pertaining to the general district in April 1944. This project was completed in Juno 1945. The work, consisting of diamond drilling, was supervised by Robert O. Hill, mining engineer, and the results were published in Report of investigations 3904, Exploration of Grey Eagle, Grandview and Royal John Claims, Grant County, N. WIC. In 1947 and 1948 the Royal John was re-examined by a Bureau engineer, and additional development to increase the reserves of low-grade lead-zinc ore was proposed. This project was started in August 1948 and completed in Juno 1949.

To restore ventilation and prevent the accumulation of explosive or toxic gases by quickly installing substitutes for stoppings blown down by an explosion. Approach Temporarily replace blown down stoppings with a parachute-shaped brattice which can be erected in minutes. How It Works The self-sealing brattice is secured to the roof, ribs and floor by anchoring its nylon edge strip at several points using extensible poles, shads, or available projections such as roof bolts. The air pressure in the entry pops open the chute of lightweight sailcloth, forcing it tightly against floor, roof and rib. See Figure 1. This emergency brattice has been tested at two locations in the Bureau's Experimental Mine at Bruceton, Pennsylvania. In a test last December, one MESA inspector wearing full rescue apparel (including self contained breathing apparatus) installed a self sealing brattice in an entry at the Bruceton Mine. Although he did not have any previous experience with the device, he easily erected it in slightly less than 10 minutes, using two extensible supports (pogo sticks). Research to improve and refine the self-sealing brattice is continuing.

"Technical statistical study has been made of accidents in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania in which explosives were involved. The data have been taken from the accident reports in the files of the department of mines of Pennsylvania, supplemented by inquiries in the field.This study has disclosed a wealth of information regarding the nature and the cause of accidents that occurred where different means of firing shots of explosives were employed. In the anthracite region shots are fired with fuse, with squibs, and with electricity,Many of the salient features of this accident experience are illustrated in this report of investigations, and a number of recommendations are made to reduce the hazards of each of these three methods of shot firing.Experience seems to demonstrate that, under conditions in the anthracite region, electric firing of shots is substantially the safest method; that accidents wherein fuse is employed are more frequent than accidents in which electric firing is employed; and that the number of accidents when squibs are employed far exceeds those in which either fuse or electric firing is used."

"INTRODUCTION Exploration of the Iron Mountain and Bader iron-ore deposits in Llano County and the Gamble deposit in Mason County, Texas, was begun by the Bureau of Mines in January and completed in May 1944. The deposits had been examined by A. B. Needham, district engineer of the Bureau, in November 1942. Detailed geophysical studies by the gravity method as well as with a dip needle were made by the Bureau of Economic Geology 3/ of the University of Texas and the Federal Geological Survey. 4/ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn the program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy., It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploration project as soon as practicable after its completion. "INTRODUCTION This report describes the results obtained from a diamond-drill exploration project performed by the Bureau of Mines on the nickel deposits of the Yakobi Island, Alaska. The Federal Geological Survey 6/ completed a detailed geologic study and mapped the area during the summer of 1940, and a Bureau of Mines examining engineer 7/ made a preliminary examination of the deposits in June 1941, at which time core drilling was suggested as the logical means of determining the extent and grade of the deposits. Equipment and supplies were unloaded on the beach at Yakobi Island on October 21, 1941. The drills were moved to Bohemia Basin, where actual drilling operations wore begun under the direction of a Bureau of Mines engineer 8/ on November 7, 1941. Two core-drill holes were completed on December 7, 1941. Upon the request of the drilling contractor, operations were recessed owing to severe winter conditions. Work on the project was resumed April 27, 1942, under the direction of another Bureau of Mines engineer 9/ and was completed August 15, 1942. During the 1942 season, 13 core-drill holes were completed, and 10 surface pits and a tunnel were sampled. A total of 5, 191 feet of core-drill hole was drilled in 15 holes during the entire project. The results of drilling and sampling form the basis of this report."

A study of the production of coronene , a high - melting ( 440 ° C ) , highboiling ( 525 ° C) , polynuclear hydrocarbon , was made by the Bureau of Mines to determine the maximum yield obtainable by the hydrogenation of coal and coalderived materials . Experiments were made with anthracite and bituminous coals and with asphaltenes and centrifuged residue obtained from heavy oil produced in a pilot plant by the hydrogenation of a bituminous coal at 2,000 psi and 480 ° C. With anthracite , yields of coronene of 0.5 to 0.7 wt pct of moistureand ash - free coal were obtained at 6,000 to 8,000 psi , 700 ° to 750 ° C , and a residence time of 30 minutes . With bituminous coal , yields averaging 0.4 wt pct of maf coal were obtained at 6,000 psi , 800 ° C , and 30 minutes ' residence time . With asphaltene and centrifuged residue , yields of less than 0.02 wt pct of maf coal were obtained at 6,000 psi , 700 ° C , and 60 minutes ' residence time .

A new record in accident prevention was made by the metal-mining a industry of the United States in 1938, as signalized by a lower fatality rate than in any previous year. The rate was less than half as high as in 1911, the earliest year for which figures are available. A good safety record was also established in the prevention of nonfatal injuries, as the injury rate was lower than in any other years except 1931 to 1935, a 5-year period notable for its unusually low injury rates. Employment was more limited in 1938 than in 1937, both in number of men employed and total number of man-hours worked. The number of workdays per man also was smaller than in 1937. Operating companies reported that 7,233 mines were active in 1938 or some part of the year and that the total number of men employed was 103,027. This figure represents the summation of the average number of men employed as reported by the companies, the average for each mine being that for the period during which the mine was active. The number of employees at all mines in 1938 was 15,402 less than in 1937. Reports covering all mines indicated a total of 188 million man-hours worked during the year, or 21 percent less than the nearly 240 million man-hours worked in 1937. In the performance of this work accidents occurred that resulted in the death of 156 employees and the injury of 1.2,722, each injured employee being disabled for more than the remainder of the clay on which he was hurt.. The fatality rate for 1938 was 0.83 per million man-hours worked, which was 9 percent more favorable than the rate of 0.91 for 1937. Nonfatal injuries occurred at the rate of 67.61 per million man-hours worked, an improvement of 10 percent compared with the injury rate of 75.37 for 1937.

[This report describes preliminary tests of samples from six deposits of oxidized copper ores .in Nevada. The tests for the most part were confined to laboratory-scale acid leaching to extract the copper.'The exceptions consisted of flotation tests to demons' ate the possibilities of treating the ore by that method. The samples tested were representative of oxidized copper ores from six counties in all parts of Nevada. The results obtained by the preliminary tests described were indicative of the extractions of copper to be expected, In the five leaching experiments, the approximate consumption of acid was also indicated.]

On May 15, 1936, Congress authorized the Bureau of Mines to conduct certain studies, experiments, and investigations of subbituminous coal and lignite .4/ Appropriations were made in July 1937, and since that date an active investigation has been underway to complete the provisions of the act. Part of the investigation has included a comprehensive survey of the known properties of the lower-rank non-coking coals, and provisions were made to obtain more data on certain varieties. In line with this plan, a typically subbituminous coal was selected for an extended series o tests in the standard Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association unit,5/ at the Central Experiment Station. This particular noncaking coal was the first one of its rank that ha& been tested in the apparatus; for this reason the results are of particular interest because the testing apparatus was originally designed for use in studying the coke- and gas-making properties of coking coals. The test as described below has been developed by the Bureau of Mines since 1927 through a cooperative agreement with the American Gas Association.6/ Ninety to 180 pounds of coal is heated in a circular retort, 13 to 18 inches in diameter, at wall. temperatures ranging from 540°C. to 1,110°C. in 100°C. steps. All products axe collected and measured; their physical and chemical properties axe then carefully determined to ascertain the gas- and coke-making properties of the coal.

The T. L. shaft of the Eureka Corp., Ltd., near Adams Hill, Eureka, Nev., was sunk in 1954 and 1955 to permit exploration and development of the lead-zinc-silver ore that had been indicated by drilling. This paper describes the sinking of the 4-compartment, vertical shaft to a depth of 1,127 feet and includes pertinent details of equipment, methods, and costs. A shaft crew of 10 men, supplemented by 13 hoistmen, topmen, carpenter, and shop crewmen, sank and timbered the 1,127 feet of shaft in 630 workdays. Total labor per foot of shaft was 107.95 man-hours. Supplies per foot of shaft included 20 pounds of explosives, 1.61 pounds of drill steel, and 200 board-feet of timber. Power consumption, including that required for pumping, averaged 3,726 kw.-hr. per foot.

Procedures for separating columbium and tantalum have been developed by the Bureau of Mines as part of a broad research program on the utilization of low-grade ores of columbium and tantalum, Columbium and tantalum compounds of greater than 99 percent purity have been obtained by application of the solvent extraction separation system: Hydrofluoric acid-sulfuric acid-methyl iso-butyl ketone. This system is unique in that it not only separates columbium from tantalum, but also separates these two metals from other metallic impurities. The system is effective for separating the metals irrespective of the tantalum and columbium ratio of the starting materials. Investigations in which the spent feed obtained from the initial coextraction step was recycled to the system indicated that efficiency was increased, and cost was reduced without impairing product purity. Continuous tests demonstrated that this solvent extraction system could be used in large-scale equipment without loss in efficiency or in purity of products. The separation of columbium and tantalum has been difficult because of the similarity in their chemical bahavior. Many methods have been proposed for separating these two elements, but most methods either did not achieve satisfactory separation or were tedious and time consuming. The Marignac process (3, 4)4 developed in 1866 was the only method used commercially until recently. This separation procedure is based on the difference in solubility in aqueous solution of potassium tantalum fluoride and potassium columbium oxyfluoride. Current commercial practice appears to favor solvent extraction as a method for separating tantalum from columbium (1). Several efficient methods for separating columbium from tantalum by solvent extraction (2, 9, 8) were reported earlier from this laboratory.
