The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) Information and Analysis Directorate collects worldwide data on virtually every commercially important non fuel mineral commodity. These data form the base for tracking and assessing the health of the minerals sector of the U.S. economy. The USBM's data collection activity was instituted by the 47th Congress in an appropriations act of August 7, 1882 (22 Stat. 329), which placed the collection of mineral statistics on an annual basis. The most recent authority for the USBM survey activity is the National Materials and Minerals Policy, Research and Development Act of 1980 (Public Law 96-479, 96th Congress). This act strengthens protection for proprietary data provided to the U.S. Department of the Interior by persons or firms engaged in any phase of mineral or mineral-material production or consumption.

This Bureau of Mines report is the second of a series of process evaluations planned to determine the relative processing costs of producing metallurgical-grade alumina from low-grade aluminous materials. Included in these evaluations are recommendations for additional research and development to improve the processes and to lower their costs. The design for each process is based on published work. The processes considered in this report are designed to extract alumina as aluminum chloride from calcined clay with 20 percent hydrochloric acid and to remove the silica residue by filtration. Iron is removed by one of the following processes: Isopropyl ether extraction, in which iron chloride is extracted before decomposing the aluminum chloride; gas precipitation, in which the aluminum chloride is precipitated with hydrogen chloride while leaving the iron chloride in solution; gas precipitation-isopropyl ether extraction, in which the aluminum chloride from precipitation is extracted with isopropyl ether, if necessary; caustic purification, in which a crude alumina is produced and then purified by a modified Bayer operation; or sinter purification, in which a crude alumina is produced and then purified by a lime-soda sinter operation. The Bureau of Mines studied the use of computerized, continuous, remote monitoring systems for safety from power system faults in underground coal mines. In this report the need to improve protection against power system faults is documented, and types of faults are identified. The relationship between mine safety regulations and computerized, continuous, remote monitoring is analyzed.

Nine rock properties were determined for rocks coming from 49 locations and having a wide range of compressive strengths. Plots of the nine rock properties versus each other were prepared. A stepwise multiple linear regression analysis was performed to obtain several equations for predicting compressive strength. Both linear and curvilinear relationships were assumed between compressive strength and the other rock properties. The prediction equations had multiple correlation coefficients ranging from 0.947 for an equation with 1 variable (point load tensile strength) to 0.986 for an equation with 25 variables. Of the properties tested only point load tensile strength could be used alone to estimate compressive strength with fair accuracy.

"INTRODUCTION The Camp Bird mine was investigated by Bureau of Mines engineers 3/ September 22 and 24, 1942, and April 29 and 30, 1944. In a subsequent report and supplement, it was recommended that core drilling be done below the 14th. level to determine if commercial ore existed at greater depths, and particularly if ore existed in the vein or adjacent thereto where it passes into the sedimentary formations estimated to underlie the volcanics approximately 400 feet below the 14th level.Seven diamond-drill holes aggregating 3,956 feet were drilled. Four of these holes were under the Hematite ore body and three were under the Big Discovery ore body. Two holes under, the Hematite ore body wore directed at angles but little steeper than the angle of dip of the vein and penetrated the sedimentaries beneath the volcanics close to the vein. Enough low-grade ore was found at the base of the Telluride conglomerate to indicate the presence of a large body of low-grade zinc sulfide ore. Two holes were directed to crosscut the vein at a depth of approximately 125 feet below the 14th level. No commercial ore was cut, but the vein showed the average width and same general characteristics as at the 14th level. One hole under the Big Discovery ore body was directed to crosscut the vein and test the base of the Telluride conglomerate in the footwall block. No commercial ore was found in either the vein or the sedimentary horizon. One hole was directed to test the base of the Telluride conglomerate in close proximity to the vein in the hanging-wall block. This hole was lost approximately 100 feet short of its objective, and a third hole was drilled to accomplish this same thing. This report presents is an evaluation by the Federal Bureau of Mines of the effect of clay-water, brine, and oil-base drilling fluids on the productivity of test wells drilled on the Umiat anticline in U.S. Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 4 in northern Alaska. Eleven, wells were drilled on the Umiat structure as part of the U.S. Navy's extensive exploration of the Reserve during 1944-53 to determine the possibilities for oil production. The Federal Geological Survey cooperated in the exploration program and has published a comprehensive report3/ on the geology of the area and case histories of the wells. The re¬port also includes the results of special studies by the Bureau in connection with the drilling and coring of well 9 with oil-base mud in hole and was the source of much of the information used in preparing this publication. Of the eleven wells, four were drilled with rotary tools and water-base mud (one of the water-base muds was an oil-in-water emulsion mud), five were drilled with cable tools with brine in the hole, one was drilled with cable tools with brine in the hole and later reamed with rotary tools and crude oil, and one was drilled with rotary tools and oil-base mud. Although all of the wells penetrated sandstones that contained oil and gas, some were productive and others were not. The latter two wells, one completed with crude oil in the hole (with some added brine) and the other with oil-base mud, had the greatest productive capacities. The wells drilled with cable tools and brine in the hole had lower productive capacities. In contrast, two of three wells completed with rotary methods and fresh-water drilling mud and the well com¬pleted with rotary and emulsion mud were unproductive.

In the period of 1942-1945, medium-grade, oxidized, lead-silver ore was mined and shipped from the Diamond district near Eureka, Nev. An encouraging tonnage of low-grade ore was developed during these operations and partly blocked-out for future mining. If the low-grade ore could be treated profitably, further development of the district would result, and production of an important strategic metal might be increased. A representative sample of Diamond district ore was obtained through the Reno office of the Mining Division for the studies described in this report. The sample consisted of lumps and fines of a highly altered siliceous rock containing much earthy red hematite and some granular black hematite. Examination with the binocular microscope showed the lead carbonate mineral, cerussite, in seams and disseminated in the hematite. No zinc or silver minerals were identified, and no sulfide minerals were present. Analyses of the ore showed:

India is one of the fortunate countries that has substantial reserves of many raw materials for producing steel; however, for historical and economic reasons these resources have not been aggressively developed until recently. Production of steel on an industrial scale started in 1912, but annual output was below 1 million tons3 in 1938 and about 1,500,000 tons in 1951. Expansion of the steel industry became one of the objectives of India's economic planning after independence in 1947. The Planning Com¬mission's 1951 report emphasized the importance of steel production, but financial obstacles, emphasis on river valley projects, and priority for increased food production in the First 5-Year Plan (1951-56) did not permit large-scale expansion of steel capacity. The 1956 planned target for crude steel, only 1,650,000 tons, was actually exceeded by production of 1,737,900 tons. In the Second 5-Year Plan (1956-61), however, construction of steel plants received a high priority. Currently three new steel plants, each with an annual capacity of approximately 1 million tons of steel, are nearing completion in Rourkela, Dorgapur, and Bhilai. Simultaneously, the two privately owned steel plants and the small State-owned plant in Mysore have been enlarged and modernized. As a result, India's crude steel capacity will be about 6 million tons in 1961, almost evenly divided between Government-owned and privately owned plants. Actual production in 1960 totaled 3,254,000 tons compared with 2,434,000 tons in 1959. Assuming that the population will be 430 million and that capacity production will be achieved, the 1961 per capita steel output will be only 31 pounds compared with 200 pounds for Japan in 1959. Some Indian experts feel that development of steel-consuming industries merits greater emphasis in the Third 5-Year Plan (1961-66) than expanding existing steel-producing facilities. Nonetheless, the Third 5-Year Plan calls for a 10 million ton annual capacity by 1966 to be achieved by expanding the Government-owned plants in Bhilai, Durgapur, and Mysore, and by establishing a new integrated Government plant in Bokaro, in the State of Bihar.

In 2007, a total of 14,871 mining operations reported employment data to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).1 Almost half (48.4%) were sand and gravel mines, followed by stone mines (31.2%), coal mines (13.7%), nonmetal mines (4.9%), and metal mines (1.9%).

Lignite tar made by low-temperature Lurgi-Spülgas carbonization of North Dakota lignite was hydrocracked in single-pass, fixed-bed operation at 3,000 pounds per square inch over cobalt molybdate catalyst to produce gasoline, and at the same pressure, over zinc chromite catalyst to crack the high-boiling phenolic compounds to low-boiling phenolics. Hydrocracking the raw tar or the creosote-oil fraction from the tar over cobalt molybdate removed most of the oxygen, sulfur, and nitrogen in the forms of water, hydrogen sulfide, and ammonia, and produced gasoline yields from 31 to 59 volume-percent. The gasoline fractions contained from 0.1 to 7.7 volume-percent tar acids, but tar-base percentages were too low for reliable measurement; removal of these materials with dilute caustic and acid solutions also reduced the sulfur and nitrogen to 0.01 weight-percent or less.

The study described in this report was undertaken to obtain information on the character and effect of antimony additions to titanium. The availability of high-purity, low-hardness titanium metal, resulting from fused-salt electrorefining techniques, permitted a reassessment and evaluation of the physical behavior of titanium-antimony alloys. Alloys, based on several grades of titanium containing up to 10 percent antimony, were arc-melted and processed to sheet by hot and cold rolling. Properties and characteristics were evaluated by hardness tests, hot and cold rollability, annealing treatments, metallographic examination, and tensile tests.

"INTRODUCTION Feldspars represent one of the most abundant groups of minerals and constitute nearly Go percent of the material contained in the igneous rocks. They are grouped in a series of related aluminum silicates with varying amounts of potash, soda, and lime. .Approximately 85 percent of the feldspar produced in the United States is used as a flux in the production of glass, pottery, enamel and sanitary ware, brick, and tile. Notwithstanding the abundance of feldspar in the earth's crust, the only deposits that are worked to any extent are the pegmatites or coarsely crystalline dikes where natural segregation of the constituents facilitates recovery of the feldspar with a minimum of free quartz, mica, tourmaline, garnet, and other iron-bearing minerals that are detrimental in most ceramic industries.Although there are three glassplants and numerous other ceramic industries in Texas, all of the feldspar used in these plants is from other States. In the Llano region of central Texas, however, there are numerous coarse pegmatite dikes consisting primarily of feldspar and quartz in ratios up to 3 to 1. One of the more important of these dikes is the Badu Hill deposit in Llano County, Tex., which was first described by Carl Chelf 4/ in 1942. Following an examination of the deposit by W. D. McMillan, engineer in charge of the Texas field office of the Bureau of Mines, in January 1946, a proposal was made to investigate the deposit by core drilling in cooperation with the Department of Ceramic Engineering, University of Texas. This report presents the results of the cooperative investigation, which was begun April 24, 1946, and completed May 17, 1946."

The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, devised a flotation technique for upgrading chromite in chromium ores and gravity concentrates. The technique consisted of cationic flotation of chromite from a slime-free pulp acidified to pH 2.5 or lower using H2S04 modifier. Flotation results showed that ore containing serpentine as the primary gangue mineral was more amenable to concentration by this technique than ore containing the readily floatable olivine as the primary gangue mineral. Rougher flotation of a chromite ore containing abundant serpertine increased the grade form 19 to 41 percent Cra03 at a chromite recovery of 89.6 percent. Rougher flotation of ore containing abundant olivine upgraded the chromite from 23.4 to 29.6 percent Cr203 at a recovery of 89.4 percent. The technique was also applied to chromite gravity concentrates to further upgrade chromite and to reject silicates. Flotation of a gravity concentrate containing 40.9 percent Cr203 and 4.4 percent SiO2 recovered 90 percent of the chromite in cleaner products containing 44.9 percent Cr203 and 0.63 percent Si02. The combined recovery by gravity and flotation was 87 percent. An economic evaluation of this technique will be undertaken to deter-mine its feasibility for commercial use.

[The ventilation of development faces in mines for diluting gas or dust concentrations aid in hot mines for providing air-motion cooling affect, by fan-pipe units discharging high-velocity streams of air close to the face, is an important phase of mitre ventilation. The effectiveness of such units depends largely on the air-flow distribution between-the pipe discharge said the face, a subject on which little definite information is available. A study of the air, flow from grills into rooms3/ has provided sore basic data, but under conditions so different from mine fan-pipe installations in development ends that tae data to are of doubtful application to mine installa¬tions, owing to differences in air-flow conditions. The purposes of this report is to present and discuss the results of an initial series of tests of a general investigation designed to yield definite laws and design data for the discharge of fan-pine lines in nines. The s series was planned to yield preliminary data on the effects of velocity of discharge, size and shape of tripe, and adjacent calls on the air-flow distribution. Tents were made on 10-inch pine with seven different end conditions and one change of wall condition. Changes in size and shape of discharge wore made b y short transformation pieces directly at the discharge end, with the result that effects due to contraction and expansion of the flow, which proved to be of much greater importance than was expected, totally obscured any normal effects cue to size anti shape. This paper presents the details of milling practice and costs at the conglomerate mill of the Calumet & Hecla Consolidated Copper Co., Lake Linden, Mich., and is one of a series on milling methods being published by the Bureau of Mines. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The mines of the Calumet & Hecla. Consolidated Copper Co. are located in the Keweenaw Peninsula of northern Michigan. The mines of this district lie in a belt not over 4 miles wide and 100 miles long, which contains more or lees commercial ore. The Calumet & Hecla properties are the farthest north, except for the Seneca, of the operating mines. The district borders on Lake Superior, and by means of the Portage and Torch Lake waterways the largest lane vessels, can transport coal and other supplies from the lower Lakes directly to the company docks.

Dissolution of chalcopyrite with acidified ferric sulfate produces a sulfur layer on the unreacted chalcopyrite surface that interferes with further dissolution. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a process to improve the leaching kinetics of these types of diffusion-controlled systems. The system features the Bureau-developed turbomill, an attrition grinder that scrubs the reaction product coating away from the unreacted mineral grains during leaching. The system can be operated continuously at any temperature up to the boiling point of the leaching agent. This method is a hydrometallurgical alternative to chalcopyrite smelter technology and eliminates sulfur dioxide emission problems with its associated costs. Batch testing at 900 C with the chalcopyrite-ferric sulfate system resulted in copper extraction exceeding 99 pct. At an optimal energy consumption of 1,520 kW· hjst, 95 pct of the copper was extracted. The pregnant liquor was clarified and tested for typical solvent-extraction recovery of the copper. Two-stage extraction and two-stage stripping recovered 96 pct of the copper in an electrolyte suitable for copper electrowinning.
