Excessive production of reactive oxygen radicals by alveolar macrophages is proposed to play an important role in oxidative lung injury. A major product of oxygen radical formation is the highly reactive hydroxyl radical (•OH) generated via a biologic Fenton reaction. In addition to its known ability to induce lipid peroxidation, recent studies have suggested that the •OH may exert its cytotoxic effect through the alteration of [Ca2+], homeostasis. To test this potential mechanism as well as to investigate the relationship between •OH and Ca" overloading in cytotoxic injury, isolated rat alveolar macrophages were exposed to externally generated radical system, H2O2 (0.01 to 1 mM) and Fe (1 mM) and their [Ca2+] levels and cell injury were monitored using quantitative fluorescence microscopy with the aid of the specific Ca" indicator, Fura-2, and membrane integrity indicator, propidium iodide. Electron spin resonance measurements using the spin trap 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline-N-oxide (DMPO) confirmed the production of the .OH radical by this system. Upon the addition of the radicals, the macrophages displayed a rapid initial rise in [Ca2+] which was followed by a slower but more pronounced [Ca2+], elevation that reached a level 3 to 5 times higher than the basal level. This process preceded cell death as evident by nuclear propidium iodide fluorescence. Depletion of extracellular Ca" inhibited both the [Ca2+], response and cell injury. Preincubation of the cells with the Ca" channel blocker verapamil or .0H radical scavenger mannitol similarly inhibited the [Ca2+], rise and loss of viability. Firefly luciferase assay of cellular ATP content demonstrated that the alterations in [Ca2+], following .0H treatment preceded the depletion of ATP. Changes in membrane potential caused by Na* substitution with K* had no significant effect on either the unstimulated or stimulated [Ca"], levels. Taken together, these measurements indicate that .OH-induced injury in alveolar macrophages is associated with the alteration in [Ca2+], homeostasis. The mechanism of •OH-induced [Ca2+] loading is not due to nonspecific membrane damage or energy depletion, but mainly due to an increase in Ca2+ influx through Ca2+ selective channels. This Ca2+ over-load state as well as energy depletion caused by the oxidant may activate certain cellular degradative processes leading to cell injury and death.

"while investigating the presence of heavy strata gases* in certain mines of the East Tintic mining district of Utah, a small, local body of light, very hot gas of high-nitrogen composition was noted in one of the mines. Observations and analyses indicate that this light gas was resulting from very rapid oxidation of finely disseminated pyrite, in lead-silver sulphide ore. The gas was actually mine air which had lost a large proportion of its oxygen content by reaction with the pyrite. This body of gas was hanging in a local high spot about 5 by 5 by 5 feet in size, caused by caving, at the end of a crosscut. Fifty feet from this spot, an air current of 6000 cubic feet per minute was entering the 5 by 7 foot cross-cat from a raise from below.On account of the vapor contained in the gas, the bottom level of the gas could be plainly seen and was practically a horizontal plane, but of slightly wavy appearance, coinciding with the point where an acetylene light was extinguished. This body of gas was visited on three occasions and samples obtained by means of evacaated bulbs and by water displacement. The temperature of the gas was ap¬proximately 175 degrees P. on all three occasions, so that sampling required thick gloves and quick action. Air three feet below the vapor line had a temperature of only 120 degrees F., and a relative humidity of 27 per cent. The stratification of the air and gas mixtures was so sharply defined that the sampler could hold his head a few inches below the vapor level for an appreciable period of time without any noticeable effect other than that due to the high temperature. At one foot below vapor level, it was 135 degrees F., and the relative humidity was 30 per cent. When a candle and an acetylene light were raised into the gas from below, the candle flame was extinguished at a point two inches lower than the acetylene flume, indicating a drop in oxygen content from about 16 per cent to 12 per cent (oxygen content of normal dry air 20.05 per cent) in the distance of two inches."

Carpenter, professor of metallurgy, Colorado School of Mines. Coal samples from the Northern Colorado field used in the stoker during 3 years of service were supplied through the cooperation of N. C. Brooks, secretary, Northern Colorado Coals, Inc.This report describes the development and practical tests made on a small stoker-fired system for heating service water automatically. The system was designed to take advantage of the favorable reactivity of low-rank fuels, and the objective was to devise a combination of stoker, heat-receiving, and hot-water storage system Which would be automatic for at least 30 days without attention, while heating service water at minimum cost. The system was developed to a point where coal consumption was less than 10 pounds (or less than 100,000 B.t.u.) per day. The total operating cost of hot water for an average-family-was about $1.00 per month, with coal retailing at $6.00 per ton and electric power at 4 cents a kilowatt-hour. The heating system was designed for the utilization of low-rank fuels, but the general features of the double-tank system can be 'employed fuels, either gas or liquid fuels.The Subbituminous Coal and Lignite Section of the Bureau of Mines began investigations on the utilization of low-rank fuels in domestic appliances during 1939. Tests were made on various devices to find out if they were suitable for the low-rank fuels. Most of the available appliances for burning coal have been designed for the higher-rank fuels, and they are not well-suited for burning the lower-rank coals at maximum efficiency, because subbituminous coals and lignite have high bed moisture ranging between 20 and 40 percent by weight, which lowers heating value to the range of 10,000 to 6,500 B.t.u. per pound. They are noncoking, and the ash content ranges between 4 and 6 percent, with a fusion temperature of about 2,0000 F."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines explored new methods and technology for extracting coal from the Appalachian Mountain region of the Eastern United States. These methods were aimed at extracting coal from thin seams and focused on the use of "roof-fall-tolerant" (RFT) mining concepts. These methods could be used on existing, abandoned highwalls or in conjunction with new highwall mining. The research was conducted using small-scale and quasi-full-scale physical models to obtain experimental results. Details are provided on (1) the quasi-full-scale model for cross-ridge mining, (2) the quasi-full-scale model for down-ridge mining, (3) the test results of these models, and (4) recommendations for future research. Significant results include demonstration of the RFT concept, a discussion of expected coal produced from these methods, and recommendations for future research.

Some mines after passing through the prospecting stage and becoming sizable enterprises still adhere to the development program of the prospect, extending their workings without definite plans. In mining operations where definite structural conditions do not exist, a prearranged layout of mine development is not feasible; but where exploration and preliminary development have indicated the extent and probable limits within which the ore is expected, careful planning of development will result in a lowering of mining costs and a consequent increase is profits. A lack of definite plane for laying out mine workings is one of the contributory factors to unnecessarily high costs. Although this paper deals primarily with the influence of level spacing on mining costs, still other phases of mine development, such as the proper spacing of ore chutes and raises, can be analyzed on a cost basis in a similar manner, as shown herein. LEVEL SPACING The problem of establishing a new level or levels in order to exploit steeply dioping ore deposits and prospect the ground at depth recurs at intervals during the active life of mines. Driving levels is largely "dead work" and therefore costly. By the judicious selection of the proper level interval after balancing the opposing factors involved in the problem, a considerable saving in mining costs can be effected. Although much has been written in regard to the various methods employed in ore extraction, mining literature is still incomplete in regard to the factors-influencing level spacing at various mines. Level spacing involves procedures not lending themselves readily to description, and, moreover, it is a phase of mining operations that is apt to escape criticism, because only those in close contact with the operations are equipped with the necessary familiarity with the conditions to pass judgment.

Uranium activity has introduced a comparatively new hazard to United States mining. In addition to the hazards common to all mines, uranium mines have a complex health problem of radiation damage. Like many new processes, radiation and nuclear energy can be made to serve man in many useful ways when properly understood and handled; but, like fire, gases, and electricity, their potential dangers must be known and respected, and appropriate precautions must be taken or death may result. Since 1950 the Public Health Service has been conducting basic investigations on exposure to radon and its daughter products and the effect of exposure upon the health of miners in uranium mines of the Western States. The Bureau of Mines assisted in several of these investigations, especially in mines on Indian lands. The studies have shown that a serious health hazard exists from radioactive exposure that might cause lung cancer if continued over a number of years. The Public Health Service report, Control of Radon and Daughters in Uranium Mines and Calculations on Biologic Effects,6/ shows that 55 percent of the uranium mines employing 64 percent of the miners had atmospheric concentrations more than five times the working level now accepted as reasonably safe for industrial exposures. Extensive control measures are necessary to reduce these concentrations to the suggested working level of less than 300 micromicrocuries of total radon daughter products per liter of air.

This report describes the tri-n-butyl phosphate extraction of cerium (IV) from a sulfate leach liquor prepared from a bastnaesite concentrate as well as from pure eerie nitrate solutions. The work was done on a laboratory scale using separatory funnels. Extraction from pure cerium solutions entailed no great difficulties; however, extraction from the bastnaesite solution proved more difficult, mainly because of the inhibiting effect of the sulfate ion. Despite this, procedures were developed for obtaining good single-state cerium extraction (95+ percent) and a high-purity product (99+ percent), although the maximization of both cannot be achieved simultaneously. This necessitates a compromise in any extraction scheme.

Technology for the preparation of densifiable sulfur concrete (sulfapave) materials has been devised by the Bureau of Mines. The materials are intended as new construction materials for use in corrosive areas where conventional materials fail. A series of modified sulfur cements were developed, which can be used in combination with dense-graded aggregates to prepare sulfapave materials with excellent corrosion-resistant properties. The materials can be mixed, laid, and compacted into place with conventional hot-mix asphalt pavi.ng equipment. Mixture designs utilizing 5-to 30-pct-modified sulfur cements and dense-graded aggregates gave material properties ranging from rigid to flexible. Laboratory corrosion tests in sulfuric acid showed no material loss or deterioration of physical properties over a 1-year test period in concentrations ranging from 0 to 60 pct at ambient temperatures. Preliminary results on field testing the materials for durability to weathering, corrosion, and traffic have been excellent, with no evidence of failure in the materials.

This report on the physical and chemical properties of typical crude oils of Oklahoma is the sixth in a series of preliminary chapters of a bulletin covering the producing districts of the United. States. Preceding reports* may be obtained on request. The details of the methods used in this survey in collecting samples, making laboratory tests, and interpreting results are discussed in the first three papers. If any errors or omissions are noted by readers, it is hoped they will be brought to the attention of the Bureau of Mines for correction before the appearance of the permanent report. Samples of Oklahoma crudes analyzed in this report were taken from those fields representing the major production of the State. The Oklahoma Geological Survey designates 172 different oil and gas fields in the State, S1 being in Osage County, 14 in Tulsa County, 14 in Okmulgee County, 9 in Washington County. The list of samples collected by the Bureau of Mines represents only 5 fields in Osage County - Bigheart, Burbank, Hominy, Osage Junction, and Pershing - yet these samples, together with those from adjoining fields, are representative of nearly all crude produced in the county. Round Mountain is one of a number of locations investigated by the Bureau of Mines in its search for manganese deposits during the early phases at the strategic minerals program. The Suiter mine, on Round Mountain, had provided some 5,000 tons of manganese concentrates during the period 1917 to 1919, and early in 1941 prospecting by the Virginia Hardwood Lumber Co. in this same area had discovered manganese on what later became known as the Hall Pit. These promising indications encouraged the Bureau to begin an exploration project in search of additional reserves of manganese on Round Mountain in January 1942 (fig. 1).

The objective of this task was to perform theoretical analyses related to identifying and increasing the understanding of wireless propagation mechanisms in mines, and for predicting the performance ranges and limitations of proposed systems. This was to be achieved by building on and extending previous ADL work* and utilizing experimental data as they became available in the radio frequency bands of interest. B. TASKS Theoretical radio wave propagation investigations undertaken on this task centered on three areas. The first area dealt with extending previous UHF wireless propagation results*: to estimate the losses caused by the presence of haulage vehicles such as trains in coal mine tunnels; to estimate the propagation losses and wireless communication ranges expected along a longwall coal face tunnel; and to assess the applicability of previous analytical approximations to tunnels having reduced crossectional dimensions, such as those found in low coal and in the presence of haulage vehicles. The second area dealt with the development of a suitable propagation model to adequately explain the unexpected, highly favorable LF to MF band wireless radio wave propagation behavior experimentally observed in Consolidation Coal Co.'s Ireland mine. The third area dealt with the formulation of a model for evaluating the overall system transfer function and transmitter requirements for a hoist shaft LF communications system, taking into account the hoist rope/shaft transmission line characteristics, the cage and sheave wheel line terminations, the signal inductive couplers, and hoist shaft signal and noise data.

This report describes in detail the work done on the development of the Time Domain Reflectometry Microcomputer (TDRM). Modifications to the FMC-Model 302A Cable Fault Locator is described in Appendix D. The TDRM unit uses an 8080 microcomputer to accurately locate major faults in low capacitance cables to within ± 1 foot when properly calibrated. Major faults in high capacitance cables are usually located within ± 5 feet. The upper limits of fault detection are <1 kilohm shunt fault and >7 ohm series fault. In practice fault detection limits are reduced to <300 ohms shunt fault and >30 ohms series fault because of discontinuities caused by cable repair.

One objective of Bureau of Mines recycling research is to devise technology that enables recovery of metals and minerals from wastes. From October 1982 through September 1985, researchers at the Bureau and at the University of Missouri Rolla (contract H0222002) investigated the use of nonferrous flue dust with varying Zn contents (11 to 66 pct) as a source of Zn for electrogalvanizing steel wire. The waste dusts used were from a secondary Cu smelter, a brass smelter, a Pb smelter, and a water treatment plant. The dusts were leached in H2S04, and the leach solutions were treated to make electrolyte for electrogalvanizing steel wire using soluble Zn anodes. Cyclic voltammetry was used in an inno-vative method to evaluate the quality of the electrolytes used for elec-rogalvanizing. After electrogalvanizing, the wire was drawn on a labo-ratory draw bench to simulate industrial practice. Corrosion resistance was measured by a number of electrochemical techniques and by the stan-dard ASTM salt-spray tests. After successful bench-scale tests, the process was demonstrated in an industrial pilot plant. Results indicate that nonferrous flue dusts can be used as a source of Zn for electro-galvanizing if certain impurities are either partially or completely removed from the starting electrolyte.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory and continuous pilot plant flotation tests to determine the feasibility of recovering commercial-grade mica from an Alabama graphitic-mica schist. Preconcentration of the ground ore on a Humphrey&apos;s spiral was employed to reject the heavy minerals and part of the quartz in a product virtually free of mica. The acid-cationic mica flotation process recovered over 89 percent of the mica in a product containing 98.7 percent mica. Grinding of the mica concentrate in a fluid energy mill produced a product with a bulk density of 12 lb per cubic foot.

For many years it has been considered that an average of 50 percent of the coal in the deposits exploited has been recovered. Owing to many changes in mining methods during the past two decades, this study was initiated to obtain an up-to-date measurement of recovery percentage and thus establish part of the basis from which presently recoverable reserves may be estimated. Recovery percentages were determined within mined areas of 200 underground coal mines. These comprised a statistical sample selected to be representative of operating mines in relation to their significance to depletion of reserves. The results ranged from 29 to 91 percent and averaged 57.0 ± 1.7 percent (95-percent confidence limit). Six factors were identified mathematically as significantly affecting recovery percentages: (1) Pillaring system, (2) top rock and conditions, (3) bottom rock and conditions, (4) marketability, (5) coalbed thickness, and (6) productivity. Skill and attitude of mine operators toward recovery, although not measured, were probable factors. Five other variables that were tested did not show any significant relationship with recovery percentages. Also, five mining equipment features were identified, through discussions with mine officials, as affecting adversely recovery percentage at some mines.

Sulfide ore concentrates containing cobalt, nickel, copper, lead, and iron were salt roasted and leached on a laboratory scale. More than 95 percent of the cobalt, nickel, and copper was recovered. Heating patterns for salt roasting different concentrates were established. More cobalt, nickel, and copper were recovered from a bulk concentrate composed of a mixture of copper concentrate and iron concentrate. This mixture corresponded roughly with the mixture of these materials in stockpiles in southeastern Missouri. A temperature range of 375° to 400° C. was best for salt roasting. Metal chlorides were leached at a pH of 1 from chloridized charges of concentrates, Although the amounts of cobalt, nickel, and copper extracted were high, the amount of iron dissolved simultaneously interfered with subsequent separation and recovery of these metals. The amount of dissolved iron was reduced substantially by steam treating chloridized charges of bulk concentrate at 300° C. In this way, the ratios of cobalt, nickel, and copper to iron in leach liquors permitted satisfactory separation and recovery of these metals. THIS REPORT give&apos;s the results of a study of the central and south parts of the Cushing oilfield, including a description of the geology, a review of the production history, and estimates of oil reserves available by secondary-recovery methods. Each of the major producing zones of the field is treated separately. The report, which is one of a long series of field studies the Bureau of Mines has conducted over the past 40 years, was prepared to aid operators to increase oil recovery and to help prevent underground waste in the Cushing field, in the State of Oklahoma, and in the United States. The geology and production history are presented not as a review of past behavior of the Cushing field but rather to interpret the possibilities for increased oil recovery by future development of this and similar areas. The field, which is in the northwest corner of Creek County, Okla., was discovered in 1912 and developed during 1913 and 1914. For several years it, was one of the most important areas producing high-grade crude oil in Oklahoma. Although some oil has been recovered from each of 10 separate reservoirs, nearly 98 percent of the total recovery of oil in the area studied was from 4 major producing formations (table 1). Real gross national product3 (GNP) grew at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.2% in the fourth quarter compared with a revised 4.3% rate in the third quarter, according to the most recent estimates released by the U.S. Department of Commerce (table 1). Expanding inventories, Government purchases of goods and services, residential fixed investment, and a narrowing of the trade deficit fueled the growth. Significantly reduced consumer demand led to the heavy inventory growth. Almost half of the buildup in inventories consisted of automobiles because consumers reduced purchases when Detroit ceased most incentive programs in late summer. Reduced consumer demand also affected imports, however, and the narrowing of the trade deficit resumed after widening in the third quarter. Nonresi- [ ] dential fixed investment also declined after a strong gain in the third quarter. On a year-to-year basis, the economy grew at an inflation-adjusted rate of 2.9%, the same as that of 1986. However, on a fourth-quarter-to-fourth-quarter basis, the real growth reached 3.8%, the highest growth since 19M, and exceeded the Reagan Administration&apos;s estimate of 3.4%. Rising merchandise exports accounted for about one-third of the growth in GNP for all of 1987 and are expected to continue to grow as domestic manufactures benefit from the lower value of the dollar vis-a-vis other major trading country currencies. Consumer demand became a less important factor of economic growth, but employment continued to grow (table 2), and civilian unemployment declined by 0.9 percentage points (December to December) as the industrial sector geared up to increase exports. Inflation, as measured by the fixed-weighted GNP price index, remained low at 3.4%.
