Many of you radio listeners have probably never seen a mine . You may be glad of it, but you should not forget that there is a vast army of men in this country who not only have to see mines , but have to work in them day by day in order that you may be supplied with many of the things you need. Specifically , nearly a million men work in the mines of the United States , 700,000 in the coal mines , 110,000 in the metal mines , 100,000 in other mines and quarries , and 75,000 in the oil and gas fields . On a stormy night , the average citizen is apt to think of the perils of the seaman . Particularly in the old days before steamships , many a prayer went up " God help the poor sailor on a night like this . " At the same time , the sailormen often expressed fear for the poor landlubber , exposed as he was to the danger of falling chimneys , swaying signboards , and uprooted trees . So with the miner . Many of you may pity him , for working underground in complete darkness except for feeble artificial lighting , mining coal or ore , drilling hard rock , handling explosives , and perhaps breathing vitiated air . On the other hand , on stormy days , with rain , snow or hail falling , and with the temperature low , or on hot bright days , I have often heard miners joke about the poor fellows who had to stay " on top, " and could not get " down below" where there was no wind , where no snow fell, where the temperature was unchanging , and where a man could have his own working place , arranged to suit himself , with little interference from meddlers and with no automobiles to dodge . So do not feel too sorry for the miner . He is quite apt to be a strong , healthy , hearty person , making pretty good wages , and fairly well contented with his lot .

"In 1912 bauxite was discovered in the Andersonville district, which lies in the 28th and 29th land districts of Georgia and comprises parts of Sumter, Macon, and Schley Counties. Mining was begun in May 1914 by the Republic Mining & Manufacturing Co. Considerable ore has been produced in this region since that time by individual interests and by the American Cyanamid & Chemical Corp., which acquired the property formerly owned by the Republic Co.The area was examined in the fall of 1941 by representatives of the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey, after which a prospecting program was begun by the Bureau. Drilling was started on December 26, 1941, and continued until November 18, 1943. A total of 1,192 holes was drilled in the district, and 3,679 samples were taken and analyzed.Mineral exploration agreements were signed by 146 property owners covering 42,128 acres. Holes were drilled on 121 of these properties, which have a total area of 38,778 acres.Drilling under this project disclosed several new deposits, of which four have been completely delimited. Previous prospecting in this area by mining companies did not find bauxite, as it lies under heavy overburden. Work by the Bureau indicates 14,412,000 long tons of ore containing 30 percent or more alumina. The total tonnage is divided as follows:Georgia State Highway Routes 26 and 4-9 traverse the district. The Central of Georgia Railroad passes through the center of the entire district (see fig. 1).The project was initiated by J. R. Thoenen, supervising engineer, Non-metals Mining Section, Mining Division, Bureau of Mines. It was under his general supervision until July 1942, after which it was under the general supervision of E. J. Lintner and Rowe McCrae, district engineers for Georgia, South Carolina, and Flordia, respectively.John C. Feeley, Jr., was project engineer from December 1941 to April 1942. Other engineers who assisted in the work on the project are R. E. Babcock, T. M. Romslo, Don M. Coulter, and Walter T. Lewiecki.Acknowledgment is due the metallurgical staffs at College Park, Md., and Tuscaloosa, Ala., for analyses of samples and beneficiation tests.Acknowledgment is also expressed to Alfred D. Zapp, M. W. Harris, Elmer Kneedler,and Parke D. "This study was undertaken to provide a more adequate knowledge of the chemistry of the sulfide volatilization process for recovery of tin from low-grade Bolivian ores. The investigation was partly supported by the Department of State under its program for scientific cooperation with South American republics.The results of this investigation demonstrate the conditions under which cassiterite (Sn02) may be converted to stannous sulfide by reaction with pyrite or sulfur vapor. Quantitative data are given on the rate of sulfidization and on the vapor pressure of stannous sulfide.INTRODUCTIONAlthough the United States is the world's largest consumer of tin, virtually no tin ores occur within our national borders. Most of the world's tin supply comes from alluvial deposits in the Far East and in Africa, The major sources of tin ores are Malaya, Indochina, Bolivia, Belgian Congo, Nigeria, Thailand, Burma, China, and the United Kingdom. Bolivia is the only important source of tin in the western hemisphere. It was the chief source of tin f or the United States during World War II. The Government-owned tin smelter at Texas City, Tex., was built primarily for smelting Bolivian ores and depends largely on Bolivian ores for its operation. Bolivia is the only major tin-producing country in which the tin ores occur as vein or lode deposits requiring underground mining. Most of the tin from the Far East and Africa is mined by dredges from alluvial or placer depos its. It is recovered as a high-grade concentrate of cassiterite relatively free from impurities. The tin minerals in the lode deposits are more intimately associated with other minerals and more difficult to separate into a clean concentrate. Furthermore, a large part of the tin in the original ore is lost during concentration. The ores as mined contain only a few percent of tin, so they must be milled to separate the gangue minerals and produce a concentrate containing 30 to 40 percent tin before they are shipped to the smelter. The losses of tin that occur during milling vary from 18 to 65 percent. The average recovery of tin from Bolivian ores is probably 50 to 60 percent."

The Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Mine Safety Appliances Co., has developed a new methane analyzer system for underground applications. Methane enters coal mine ventilation air from the breakup of coal at the active face, from the collapse of roof rock during retreat mining, and from the ribs abutting virgin coal. Each source contributes varying amounts to the total emission, depending upon rate of mining, type of mining, and the character of the coalbed and adjacent strata. The evaluation of individual parameters of methane emission requires the continuous monitoring of individual mine sections over a long period of time. The methane analyzer system was developed to meet this need. The system has been installed and operated in an active mine in the Pittsburgh coalbed. The system and details of its installation and calibration are described. Data are presented to substantiate its reliability.

Literature review and extensive field survey of line and check curtain materials and practices showed: ? Miners, in general, know how to set tight curtains, and do so when needed. ? The tradeoff is economic; tight ventilation is labor-intensive. Line and check curtain techniques found are catalogued and evaluated. A fieldworthy 10 ft extensible brattice to maintain a 10 ft setback was found in use in two mines on continuous miner faces. This technique was evaluated in the laboratory for leakage and methane control at the face. Significant results include: 1) Air leakage through a gap in the extensible curtain depends upon the ratio of the cross-sectional areas between entry and return as well as gap area; 2) Gap shape has no significant effect on methane concentrations at the face -increasing gap area diminishes ventilation effectivness; and 3) Substantial reductions of CH4 concentrations at the face were accomplished by brattice extensions with gaps of up to 5 ft2 in area. An "inby hook," inserted in the roof automatically to make possible the deployment of a longer (20 ft) brattice extension in the context of a remotely controlled miner, was tested in various roof types. Insertion of this design succeeded only in coal.

An electrochemical method to selectively determine sulfur dioxide in the presence of sulfur trioxide was investigated. A hydrophobic gas-permeable membrane separates the gas sample solution from an internal filling solution containing a fixed quantity of chloride ion and a sufficiently large excess of sodium bisulfite so that its concentration may be considered constant. Sulfur dioxide diffuses through the membrane to dissolve in the internal filling solution and liberates an equivalent quantity of hydrogen ions. The electromotive force between a precision-ground, flat-ended pH electrode, which acts as the sensing element, and a chloride sensing electrode, which acts as the reference element, gives a direct measure of S02 in the gas sample solution. Calibration curves in water, tetrachloromercurate (TCM) , and citrate buffer absorption solutions were closely parallel with slopes in their linear segments, ranging from 57 to 52 mv/decade of S02 concentration. The slopes compare reasonably well with the theoretically expected slope of 58 millivolts at 21° C. The water standard curve was linear with respect to the logarithm of S02 concentration from 1 to 1,000 ppm S02; the TCM standard curve was linear from 10 to 2,000 ppm S02; and the citrate standard curve was linear from 30 to 5,000 ppm S02' The high efficiency and nontoxicity of citrate favor it as a substitute for the conventionally used TCM in the absorption solution.

This Bureau of Mines study assesses the economic significance of the Florida phosphate industry to selected counties in Florida, the State of Florida, and the Nation: it also includes a brief survey of the industry's international impact. Based on forecasts of Florida phosphate production in 1981, and using constant 1977 dollars. estimates are given for 1981 for regional and national output the value of this output, income, and employment created by the phosphate industry in Florida, Federal, Stale, and county tax revenues generated by the State's phosphate industry are also estimated for 1981. The concentrated impact of the phosphate industry on certain areas of Florida and on the State?s regional industries is examined using economic base analysis complimented by an industrial complex approach. The industry's impact at the Stare and national levels is examined through input- output analysis. In addition, an attempt to forecast for 1990 the effects of constraints on phosphate rock mining as a result of economic conditions and other factors is included as an appendix to the report. Also discussed is the phosphate industry's importance to the U.S. balance of trade: U.S. agricultural production. Including forward linkages; the U.S. sulfur industry; and the phosphate industry's importance to the production of fluorine and uranium by- products from fertilizer manufacturing.

This program involves testing to determine whether a fire hazard exists when the exposed wood surface area of timber in a mine passageway equals 40 percent of the surrounding strata surface, excluding the sill. Twelve full scale fire tests were conducted in a simulated mine passageways, using kerosene pan fires as the ignition source. The tests included three timber sizes, plus one test with roof lagging, two wood types, plus one test with treated timbers, and two ventilation air velocities. The results show air velocity to be an important factor in the occurrence of flame propagation, and that the 40 percent surface area ratio of wood to surrounding strata appears to b0. a valid criteria for fire safety at 150 fpm, but not at 350 fpm.

In the design of plants to separate helium from natural gas , it is necessary to estimate the enthalpies of the various streams at various positions in the process . This Bureau of Mines report surveys the various methods that have been used to determine enthalpies and gives information on the organizations with such capabilities . The minimum information required for developing an enthalpy diagram is presented , and the relative merits of the various methods are discussed . It is concluded that methods that require no mass flow rate or energy measurements are to be preferred .

The National Safety Competition is sponsored and conducted annually by the Bureau of Mines, U. S. Department of the Interior, to stimulate greater interest in safety in the mineral-extractive industries and to encourage the development of more effective accident-prevention programs. Since its beginning in 1925, thirty-four safety contests have been conducted. This publication reports results of the 11 annual contests for the period 1948-1958, inclusive. Mineral operations awarded the "Sentinels of Safety" trophy for the best safety record in their competitive group as well as those ranking second, third, fourth, and fifth are listed along with a summary of their achievements in preventing disabling injuries. In addition, this publication contains statistical information reflecting the disabling work-injury experience of all other mines and quarries enrolled in the annual contests. The injury statistics of these operations are arranged in the six groups of the competition and through 1955 are the only data on injury-severity at noncoal mineral operations published by the Bureau of Hines. Recognition of the National Safety Competition in promoting safety has increased steadily during its 34 years. The number of plants participating in these annual competitions increased from 210 in 1925, its first year, to a record of 675 in 1958. The expanding scope of the National Safety Competition indicates that more mines and quarries in the United States are enrolling 90 all available means to promote safety on the job will be used. Safety contests like this are generally recognized, in the field of safety promotion, as an effective way to arouse and hold the interest of employees and officials in accident-prevention programs. They tend to forge individual precautionary acts into group action centered on a common objective, such as winning the ?Sentinels of Safety? trophy.

"A successful procedure for the recovery of a valuable product from weathered tank-bottom settlings has been developed in the laboratories of the Bureau of lines and used in a field pilot plant. These heavy emulsion settlings, generally regarded by the industry as waste material, have usually been drained into open pits or storage ponds and eventually destroyed.Laboratory examination of the waste material shows it to consist essentially of a ""water-in-oil"" emulsion containing a considerable volume of congealed ""paraffin."" This paraffin is mainly high-melting-point wax; known in the industry as microcrystalline wax, for which there is an increasing demand.Because of the physical properties of this wax, the tank-bottom settlings are not responsive to conventional methods used for demulsifying ordinary crude-oil emulsions.The work upon which this report is based was conducted by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with -the Kansas State. Board of Health and with special cooperative agreements-with the Cities Service Oil Co, Bartlesville, Okla., and the Bareco Oil Co,. Barnsdall, Okla. The studies were made under the general supervision of R. A. Cattell, chief engineer, Petroleum and Natural-Gas Division, Bureau of Mines, Washington; D. C., and H. C. This project, "Analysis of Men, Materials and Supplies Handling Systems in Underground Metal and Nonmetal Mines" documents the productivity and safety aspects of the existing equipment and systems utilized in transporting personnel and supplies from the surface to the underground production work place. The Present Systems Study (this text -Volume II) documents the productivity and safety of existing men and material movement systems for six representative underground metal and nonmetal mines. Identification of common problem areas was performed using recognized industrial engineering techniques. The back-up data for the industrial engineering analysis of each mine is included as respective appendices (Volume III). A summary of the study background material, six mines' problem areas, comparison of problem areas, problem analysis, and solution recommendations are included as the project final report (Volume I), bound under separate cover.

THE ABRASIVES INDUSTRY throughout the world enjoyed a profitable year. With the exception of tripoli, the quantity of each kind of abrasive produced in the United States was greater than for any of the past 5 years and value of each was greater than for many years. Production of silicon carbide both in the United States and in Canada was the largest since 1960. Abrasive machining, which offers great potential for the increased Use of aluminum oxide, contributed to increased industrial productivity. Diamonds from the sea off the coast of South-West Africa attracted wide interest. Much of the production from this source has been gem diamond, and there is little likelihood of significant quantities of industrial diamond from that source. Manufactured diamond from all free-world sources was sold in the United States in 1964.

Vanadium is subject to only light corrosion in phosphoric acid at temperatures up to 60° C. and has a moderate corrosion rate in this acid at 100° C. It is relatively corrosion resistant in sulfuric and hydrochloric acids up to 60° C, but corrodes rapidly at 100° C. It corrodes rapidly in dilute nitric acid at 35° C. Vanadium is almost inert in 10-percent solutions of formic, acetic, lactic, tartaric, and citric acids; in 9-percent oxalic acid it corrodes slowly up to 60° C. and rapidly at 100° C. Vanadium is resistant to corrosion in substitute ocean water, tapwater, and in 3-percent sodium chloride and 10-percent sodium hydroxide solutions. It is readily attacked, however, by 20-percent ferric chloride, 20-percent cupric chloride and 5-percent mercuric chloride solutions. Vanadium is protected by contact with magnesium, aluminum, and steel SAE 4130 in substitute ocean water, by magnesium and aluminum in 3-percent sodium chloride solution, and by magnesium in tapwater. Vanadium protects copper in substitute ocean water. When vanadium and stainless steel are coupled in sulfuric acid solutions, both metals are usually unaffected by contact, whereas the corrosion rate of titanium in sulfuric acid is greatly reduced by contact with vanadium.

The Bureau of Mines recognized the problems encountered in low seam mining illumination systems. It was determined that the best way of implementing an illumination system is to integrate the design during the design and fabrication of new machinery at the factory. The purpose of this program was to integrate an approved lighting system in a low seam battery powered scoop and evaluate its performance. This report documents the work performed on this program and the results obtained.

Research and testing in a small scale equivalent of a commercial flota-tion plant was completed on four low-grade, iron-bearing materials from the western Mesabi range. Closed circuit-flotation of calcium-activated silica with fatty acid collector developed data for comparison with the batch process and highlighted problems not evident from previous bench testing. The four ore samples contained from 27 to 39 percent Fe and were equally represented by nonmagnetic taconite and semitaconite type materials. Iron concentrates containing 6.0 percent, or less, SiO2 were made 5, all four samples. Of the two material types, the semitaconite was the ore amenable to treatment, yielding iron recoveries of about 90 percent as cc pared with 70 to 80 percent for the other. Pilot plant tests showed that concentrate grade made in batch tests could be duplicated in the closed circuit and demonstrated that the amount of recoverable middling iron varied considerably between ore samples. The continuous tests also showed that water temperature strongly influenced results in the treatment of one ore but apparently was of indifferent consequence in another. Progress in thickening and filtration of flotation concentrates was made through introduction of tapioca flour to serve the dual role of iron mineral depressant and flocculant.

A general computer program is given for the linear elastic static analysis of complex structural systems. These elements have special advantages for the analysis of massive underground structures such as mine structures and above ground structures such as arch dams. New finite elements are developed which are useful in the analysis of two and three dimensional solids. Examples are given which illustrate the accuracy of the elements. A description on the use of the program and a FORTRAN IV listing are given in the Appendices.

"At one time the Alaskan Eskimo lived in many small settlements scattered along the Arctic coast. These settlements extended as far south as Bristol Bay and several miles inland on the large rivers. When the white man established trading posts, schools, hospitals, and missions, these people gradually congregated around them in a few large villages. The natural fuel supply near many of the large villages along the Arctic coast became exhausted as a result of the abnormally large influx of people from small outlying settlements.The population of Barrow, Alaska, according to the 1940 census, is 363 persons, but since that time it has increased considerably, and later estimates place the present population between 400 and 500 persons. With the exception of 25 white persons, the entire population is comprised of Eskimos.The government maintains a school, hospital, radio station, and weather station at Barrow. In addition to the government, installations, there is a church, a privately owned trading post, and cooperative store owned by the Eskimos.For many years the Barrow Eskimos depended on driftwood and petroleum residue from Cape Simpson for their fuel supply. This fuel provided not only warmth for the Eskimo during the long cold winters but also heat for melting ice, the only source of 'water during .the winter. In recent years the sources of petroleum residue and driftwood have not been adequate to meet the demands for fuel During the winter of 1942-43 and again in 1943-44, Barrow experienced an acute shortage of fuel.The fuel problem at Barrow was brought to the attention of Governor Ernest E. Gruening, who was instrumental in getting a Bureau of Mines engineer4/ to investigate reported coal occurrences in the vicinity. Coal deposits along the Meade River and at Peard Bay were examined during the spring and fall of 1943. The Alaska Native Service shipped in mining equipment in September 1943 and commenced stripping an open-pit mine on the Meade River in June 1944. In conjunction with this work, an engineer5/ of the Bureau explored by churn drilling to determine the tonnage of- coal in the vicinity of the mine. In addition to this work, the Bureau of mines examined coal deposits in Peard Bay area and along the Kuk River south of Wainwright."
