Over the last four years, a major collaboration between CSIRO-MIS, UCT and JKMRC has produced two significant advances in the modelling of comminution. The Universal Comminution Model (UCM) uses parametric SPH/DEM studies of comminution and separation devices to calibrate mathematical models which are suitable for industrial use. The Virtual Comminution Machine (VCM) uses the same computationally intensive techniques based on discrete element modelling (DEM) and smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) to directly model any comminution device by combining a CAD file describing the machine design, sophisticated ore characterisation methods and advanced particle scale flow and breakage simulation. The UCM should be useful for process analysis and optimisation of existing equipment and circuits while the VCM should make a major contribution to the evaluation and development of new machines. Progress to date is encouraging with several processes now well described using DEM. This paper also reports on progress towards combining DEM for particles with a realistic slurry model based on SPH for different types of comminution devices. In due course, this combination should allow accurate modelling of particle transport in wet mills to be combined with DEM models.

"Hydrocyclone-thickener circuit is a promising solution to enhance the dewatering efficiency in mineral industries. The challenges in the circuit is reducing particle size in the thickener feed and the good feature is a rise in the retention time of sediments in the thickener. In this work, the effect of particle size, bed depth and residence time on the thickener performance were investigated. In this order, pilot scale columns were employed at Sarcheshmeh and Shahrebabak copper complexes. Furthermore, the influence of residence time was differentiated due to the variations in the bed depth and settling flux. Moreover, a new approach was introduced to estimate solids residence time in the thickener. results indicated that with smaller particles that are introduced to the column, the bed density as well as thickener discharge solids concentration dropped significantly. It was found that thickener discharge solids concentration fell from 59.6 to 33.8 % with reducing particle size from 130 to 22 µm in the settling flux of 20 t/m2/day. Additionally, it was found that longer residence time and deeper bed resulted in an increase in the thickener performance while the bed depth has a stronger effect. It was proved that employing a hydrocyclone prior to the thickener resuted in an increase in the dewatering efficiency.INTRODUCTION Thickeners are widely employed in mineral industries to recycle tailings and concentrate water content. A limited fraction of suspension water content is recycled using a thickener. For instance, about 50 percent of tailings water content could be recycled using a shallow bed thickener during copper processing. Since the scarcity of global water resources became more serious, the demand for improving dewatering efficiency in mineral industries became more significant [1]. A number of solutions were recommended to enhance dewatering efficiency of thickeners including optimization of current thickeners, employing deep bed thickeners and utilizing thickener-filter or hydrocyclone-thickener circuits. Optimization of existing thickeners is essential, however, it does not meet the significant demand for recycled water. The application of deep bed thickeners (known as paste thickeners) has been rising in the mineral industries [2] due to a higher dewatering efficiency while its costs is remarkable."

Cyanidation leaching has always been the most widely used method of extraction of gold in the world. Its low cost and high selectivity has made it the prevalent choice for mining companies, and even for the small scale miners. The use of cyanidation in small scale mining has been an issue for the longest time, mainly due to the operation’s lack of safety measures, health care or environmental protection regulations. In pursuit of more environmentally friendly methods of extraction of gold, several alternative extraction processes have been explored, one of which is chlorination. The chlorination process is advantageous when recovering refractory gold locked in sulfides, as it simultaneously oxidizes the surrounding sulfides as well as dissolve any gold exposed to the lixiviant. This research was conducted to study and develop a safer alternative way of extraction of gold from small scale mining operations, without compromising the recovery of gold. In this study, a variation of the chlorination process has been employed for a refractory flotation concentrate wherein the majority of the gold is locked in sulfides. Hypochlorite-bearing reagents were used as the leaching reagents, and the method developed was a 2-stage leaching process in differing pH conditions. The solution pH and Eh was monitored all throughout the runs, and aliquot samples were taken at time intervals for analysis. SEM-EDS imaging was used to determine the mode of oxidation of the chlorination process, and the image obtained showed that the oxidized layer followed the shape of the particle, suggesting a diffusion controlled process. XRD analysis of the sample before and halfway through leaching further confirmed the oxidation of the sulfides. The amount of gold dissolved in the aqueous solution and in the solid residue were used as the basis for the determination of the recovery of gold. An average gold recovery of up to 84.38% was obtained using the developed method in just 7 hours of leaching. This method was then employed for a pilot-plant scale test and a gold recovery of 79.2% was obtained.

"In this paper, scheelite and scheelite coated with Pb2+ (SC) were synthesized by chemical precipitation with the help of ultrasonic. The role of the Pb2+ on scheelite was evaluated. Additionally, the dissolution behavior of minerals and the adsorption mechanism of collectors were investigated systematically via SEM, XRD, EDS. The results indicate that the ultrasonic cavitation can promote the formation of scheelite with large particle size and high crystallinity. Due to the exchange of WO4 2- and OH-, the dissolution of scheelite are not in a 1:1 equivalent amount by chemical formula and the concentration of WO4 2- is higher than that of Ca2+ in the solution because Pb2+ promotes the transfer of WO4 2- from scheelite surface into the solution. The dissolution of scheelite is an endothermic reaction and its enthalpy reaches the maximum value of 692.59J·mol-1 at pH=8~10. But the coating of Pb2+ changes the thermal effect of scheelite in the solution and the dissolution of SC is an exothermic reaction with the dissolution enthalpy of -262.30 J·mol-1. At pH=8~10, the adsorption capacity of sodium oleate and salicylhydroxamic acid on the surface of SC is higher than that of scheelite which delivers that Pb2+ contributes to the scheelite surface dissolution and enhances the adsorption of collectors on the mineral surface, thus achieving activation.INTRODUCTIONIn modern society, tungsten is a type of quite important rare metal and also a strategic resource. Because of its low vapor pressure, high melting point, good electrical and thermal conductivity properties, it is widely applied in high-temperature technology, lighting, machine and engine construction (Zhao,Z.W, 2013; Yan, W, 2017; Ilhan, S, 2013). Both scheelite and wolframite are the major tungsten deposits. With the depletion of easily-processed wolframite, scheelite has drawn a great deal of scientific and industrial attention. Scheelite can be recovered by flotation due to the metathesis of polarity and chargeability on minerals surface via adding regulators and collectors."

Traditional mineral processing techniques are more and more difficult to recover the increasingly low grade phosphate ores today. Although bioleaching method has been attempted to process low grade ores in hydrometallurgical field due to economical and environmental reason, it has been hardly used in leaching phosphate ore at home and abroad. Strains of Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans and Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans were collected and separated from the acid drainage of a coal mine in Anhui province of China. Ultraviolet irradiation and Microwave inducement were applied to the bacterial cultivation process to produce strains of Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans and Acidithi-obacillus ferrooxidans able to tolerate extremely low pH conditions and generate sulphuric acid by oxidizing elemental sulfur or sulphide and the mutagenesis can achieve higher leaching rate. The bioleaching result will improve more by the addition of Tween series surfactants.

"The decrease in iron content and increase in contaminants grade, associated with greater participation of compact and semi-compact materials, has impacted the recovery of a mechanical cells flotation circuit in the Iron Quadrangle, Brazil. The recovery decrease in the flotation stage motivated the current conventional flotation circuit reevaluation seeking alternatives to restore the recovery, without affecting the final concentrate quality parameters, with low investment. Sampling, chemical characterization of samples, bench scale flotation experiments, and mass balances were conducted. Analysis of the results showed opportunities to improve the circuit performance. The stages prior to the flotation circuit changes were: rougher, cleaner, recleaner and scavenger. In the previous configuration, recleaner was operated as cleaner scavenger and the iron grade in the scavenger concentrate was 23%, representing 38% of the new feed. After the circuit change, the circulating load was reduced from 38% to 15% and the iron content was upgraded to 42%, resulting in increased residence time. The iron content in the global tailings of the concentrator was decreased from 10.9% (year of 2013 average) to 10.2%, representing gains in both mass and metallurgical recoveries.INTRODUCTIONRegarding plant practice, the year 1972 represents a landmark for the concentration of iron ores in Brazil. VALE started up 28 units of WHIMS (wet high intensity magnetic separators) at the Cauê plant in Itabira, each one producing 1x106 t/year of concentrate. Later 17 WHIMS machines were commissioned at Conceição. During the 80’s decade of last century, changes in the ROM required the addition of a cleaner flotation stage to decrease the silica content in the pellet feed.The first company to use reverse cationic flotation as the only concentration operation of iron ore was SAMARCO (start up in 1977). Since 2015 flotation has been utilized at VALE in Itabira as major concentration process, magnetic separation acting as scavenger stage.The Jones matrix type WHIMS were manufactured for decades under patent by KHD Humboldt Wedag. After the expiration of the Jones patent, Eriez Magnetics took the world leadership regarding WHIMS manufacturing. The Brazilian branch of Eriez is Inbras. Based on plant practice experience at the Fabrica concentrator, the Brazilian company Gaustec was established (RIBEIRO and RIBEIRO, 2010) and is now present in different countries. The mega sized WHIMS GHX-1400 (18.000 Gauss, gaps smaller than 1.5 mm) were developed to face the challenge of huge throughput required by iron ore processing (Ribeiro et al, 2017)."

Yuanjiacun iron ore located in Shanxi province of China has finely disseminated grain size and contains refractory iron-bearing silicate gangue minerals such as chlorite. Therefore, a large amount of secondary slime (the content of -10µm fraction was up to 32.92%) was produced inevitably in fine grinding process, and chlorite was also enriched in concentrate from the content of 4.3% to 14.8% after high intensity magnetic separation. These two characteristics result in the difficulty to deal with Yuanjiacun iron ore by flotation. In this test work, contrast tests between single reverse flotation and selective flocculation desliming-reverse flotation were conducted on Yuanjiacun iron ore. The test results show that after selective flocculation desliming, the iron grade of cationic reverse flotation concentrate increases by 6.15% and the recovery increases by 7.25%; the iron grade of anionic reverse flotation concentrate also increases by 2.15%. Furthermore, analyses of grain size composition and mineral composition were carried out on separation products, the results indicate that selective flocculation desliming plays a dual role of optimizing grain size composition of flotation feed and removing iron-bearing silicate gangue minerals (chlorite) effectively.

Research at Cytec over the past two decades has shown that the traditional approach for ore metallurgical characterization (typically conducted via laboratory-scale batch flotation tests), which involves changing reagents and conditions one-factor-at-a-time, leads to several pitfalls. The chemical solution thus selected has a narrow un-optimized window of performance and will likely fail in the plant. A holistic approach, called the Flotation Matrix 100? process for ore metallurgical characterization, was developed at Cytec about a decade ago and has been successfully used to develop robust reagent solutions for several operations around the world. The premise for the approach is that flotation outcome from ores is variable and is determined by complex interactions between various physical, chemical and operational factors. A key component of the process is the use of efficient multivariate designs focused on the chemistry aspects (reagents and pulp chemistry), which helps identify the best processing conditions for each ore type, as well as the conditions resulting in poor performance. It also includes advanced statistical methods for dealing with the complexity and variability of experimental data. The holistic approach is illustrated in this paper with a case study on Pb/Zn ores. Using just 18 carefully designed batch tests, it is possible to partially simulate the behavior of each ore type in the plant. The best conditions for each ore type, along with the conditions to avoid, are identified. Along with this, insights are obtained into the reasons for high reagent dosages for certain ore types, and interactions between variables. "Automatic identification and characterisation of mineral raw materials and beneficiated products are of major importance in mineral processing. However, minerals show great variety in their composition and physical and chemical properties. Industrial minerals may contain the same elements in about the same amount. In these cases backscatter electron imaging or chemical analysis are not sufficient to identify the minerals. Another problem arises when micro textures are not detectable in traditional imaging or the grain size is smaller than the X-ray spatial resolution.As a supplementary technique in these cases, application of crystallographic information by electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) in the scanning electron microscope (SEM) may be a suitable method. By means of EBSD, diagnostic mineral information can be achieved if indexible patterns are provided.Until now EBSD has not been used frequently on geological samples for mineral and micro structure discrimination.The technique has been demonstrated on three Norwegian mineral raw materials and one Italian marble and shows that it has some advantages compared to traditional techniques."

Among all gravity concentration methods, Shaking-table is the most effective one from the metallurgical point of view. In this study, Shaking-table was used for concentrating a manganese ore sample from Ghasem Abad area in Kerman, Iran. Experiments were designed by using L8Taguchi design with five variables and each variable in two levels. The influence of each variable and their interactions on the operation of the device was studied. The variables under investigation were: table slope, table frequency, water flowrate, feed rate, and particle size. The manganese concentrate grade and recovery were used as response variables. It was shown that water flowrate, table slope, feed rate, and particle size are the significant variable on concentrate grade; while, all the variables influence manganese recovery.

LKAB (Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB) is operating iron ore mines, concentration plants and pelletizing plants in Northern Sweden. The largest of the apatite magnetite deposits and the mines are Kiirunavaara with annual production rate of approximately 27 Mt crude ore underground. LKAB produces two varieties of pellets: blast furnace pellets and direct reduction pellets (LKAB DR Oxide Pellets). Meanwhile the concentration process in a sequence of the low intensity magnetic separation (LIMS) and flotation at the concentration plant. In spring 2007 there were noticed great fluctuations of SiO2 grade in the crude ore. The high SiO2 grade is particularly problematic in the case of direct reduction pellets. In consequence, a project was started (called Silica in the Mine) to define exactly the problem related with silica and to find out, if possible, the reason for the great fluctuation of SiO2 grade in the crude ore going to the processing plant. A further target of this project was to develop a simplified method at the laboratory scale, to predict SiO2 grade in the magnetite concentrate in the future, but also predict the physical properties of the ore with respect to mineral processing. The essential stage of systematic characterization of the ore body for mineral processing properties is the estimation and simulation of different parameters from the laboratory scale to the large scale at the concentration plants using empirical data collected at the mineral processing by LKAB in Kiruna. Further a target was also to find useful physical parameters for mineral processing and implant those parameters into the existing geological 3D-model of the deposit. This information will be used for making prognosis of the future mining and the quality of the crude ore. It will also give better control and improve the production planning in the mine and the performance at the concentration plant in Kiruna concerning the decrease of the SiO2 grade of the magnetite concentrate.

"More than 85% of phosphorous reserves in China occur as middle-low grade phosphate of sedimentary origin. The main gangues are dolomite, quartz, silicates, and clays. The characteristics of minerals are finely disseminated. Flotation results have shown that the floatability of apatite of this kind of ore is much worse than that of igneous and metasedimentary origin because of its high specific surface area. Although some effective depressants, such as naphthalene sulfonate and phenanthrene sulfonate, are used to decrease the MgO content in the P2O5 concentrate, its presence is still high (about 2%) in the Chinese concentrates. Meanwhile, the wastewater may cause some environmental problems. Batch flotation results and measurements of specific surface area and CO3 2- have revealed that there is a relationship between the floatability of apatite and the surface area.A two-stage flotation flowsheet, which includes a combination of direct and reverse flotation, was developed for beneficiating sedimentary phosphate ores. The direct flotation was conducted in an alkaline medium and most of the apatite and carbonate minerals floated leaving quartz and siliceous gangue in the sink. In the reverse flotation circuit, the floated product was further beneficiated in an acidic medium to eliminate the carbonate as a float product. Apart from the high quality of concentrate, the two-stage flotation also facilitated the treatment and the recycling of wastewater. A wastewater recycling procedure was developed and tested in a continuous flotation process. The key factor was the careful selection of effective and non-toxic reagents."

Chile is the world's largest copper producer which is mostly in the form of sulfides for which froth flotation is the most efficient concentration process. As a result a concentrate that contains high concentrations of copper sulfides such as chalcopyrite, chalcocite and enargite is obtained. In the last decades processing of ores containing high concentrations of enargite (Cu3AsS4) has continuously increased in Chile, which is related to the fact that ore deposits nawadays are more heterogeneous and complex. Enargite is a mineral that contains arsenic and its presence in the copper concentrates implies severe penalties. In addition, the shortage of fresh water has driven the search for new alternative sources of water, among which seawater has proved to be one of the most attractive. The objective of this research is to study the behavior of the enargite in the process of flotation using seawater, and at the same time to compare its behavior with the results obtained using conventional water. The study was carried thorugh micro-flotation tests using pure samples of enargite, at pH values ranging from 4 to 11, both in fresh and seawater. PAX and MIBC were used as collector and frother respectively. Micro-flotation tests were also done at different redox potential conditions so that the effect of the surface oxidation of enargite was evaluated in seawater. The results indicate that the recovery of copper from enargite is reduced in seawater compared to fresh water, in particular at the pH values close to those of the formation of the first hydroxy complexes of Mg and Ca. In general, the experimental data indicate that the floatability of enargite is strongly affected when seawater is used, in particular at oxidizing conditions. These results suggest that Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions contained in seawater interact with the surface of enargite forming hydrophilic species.

"It has been suggested that hydroxo species, particularly those of calcium, selectively adsorb onto gangue minerals. Such species enhance the depressive action of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) onto gangue via an acid-base interaction between the positively charged mineral surface and the negatively charged CMC molecule. Thus, the hydrophilicity of gangue minerals is enhanced, preventing the dilution of the concentrate. However, as there is little evidence to support these claims it is important to investigate. Adsorption data and mineral surface charge analyses will allow a fundamental understanding into how electrolytes and their ionic strengths affect gangue-depressant adsorption. It is strongly anticipated that decoupling these effects will allow process operators to tailor their process water quality needs towards best flotation operating regimes and in the long run effect closed water circuits. Thus, using talc and pyrrhotite as proxies, this work investigates the influence of the ionic strength of process water on the adsorption of CMC onto minerals in sulphide flotation.INTRODUCTIONThe phenomenon of gangue depression in mineral flotation is of critical importance as regards the attainment of a required concentrate grade. This thus suggests that the depressant of choice has to have a highly selective affinity for the targeted gangue minerals. This would ensure the necessary prevention of gangue from reporting to the concentrate without inadvertently depressing the value bearing mineral. The chemistry of the environment regulates the manner in which gangue depression occurs. In sulphide flotation, polysaccharides are used as depressants of choice to depress naturally floatable gangue which may in the case of Merensky ores exist as talc. The two widely used polysaccharides in the South African context are carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and modified guar gum. It is suggested that polysaccharides depress gangue by rendering the surface of gangue hydrophilic or by preventing the formation of hydrophobic layers on gangue mineral surface, forming large gangue aggregates and thereby increasing their heterocoagulative nature (Shortridge et al., 1999)."

The Sydvaranger magnetite mine was shut down in 1996 due to low iron ore prices. It was reopened in 2009. The flowsheet has remained more or less as in the old plant, based upon two grinding steps followed by magnetic separation. The Sydvaranger magnetite is free of harmful elements and should therefore be sold on the high quality market. This requires a concentrate containing less than 2 % SiO2. In the old plant, this grade was achieved by amine flotation. Amine was preferred as collector because it could be used in process water from the sea. The use of amine has been restricted by the Norwegian pollution authorities during the time the mine was shut down. Test work to replace cationic with anionic flotation is therefore done. Research on activation of quartz with Ca or Mg ions prior to anionic flotation was shown by basic research in the period from 1960 to 1980 to be effective under simplified laboratory conditions. This old research has now been followed up from a practical/empirical point of view. The basic work was mainly done on quartz and iron minerals only. In this case, an actual feed containing a number of minerals common in iron ores is used, in order to demonstrate that a commercial process is possible. Calcium activation is shown to work excellently but requires too high pH to be environmentally and economically attractive. Magnesium activation is a more difficult process, because the maximum concentration of MgOH+, which was shown to be the activator, is about 100 times lower than the alternative CaOH+. Flotation success depends partly upon the ore, some amphibole minerals are more difficult to float than pure quartz. Ordinary batch flotation test work is time consuming. A South African microflotation test cell has shown promise, because work can be focused upon flotation of the more critical coarser fractions of the Sydvaranger ore. "The triboelectric charge attributes of feldspar, quartz and wollastonite minerals, after contacting different triboecharging medium made of different materials, were considered. Their charge acquisitions by different size fractions of minerals were monitored and accordingly their energetic work function values were estimated. Moreover the separation behaviours of these minerals through the electric field of a laboratory free falling separator were determined and the effects of some chemical reagents on separation their separation characteristics were studied.Finally an attempt was made to translate the findings from single mineral systems to a complex silicate ore, containing quartz, feldspars, wollastonite and some other silicates. The results show favourable prospect to apply the triboelectric separation technique for beneficiation such a complex raw material."

Froth flotation is a selective separation process and rarely used for beneficiation of limestone in the world as compared to other minerals and also mostly known conventional methods of up gradation of ROM including wobbling, selective mining, sorting, preblending etc. Limestone is mainly used in the manufacture of cement, steel and chemical industries. High grade limestone deposits are depleting day by day and the requirement of the industries have to be met by beneficiating the low grade limestone deposits in the world. And because of marginal quality of limestone, it cannot be directly used in cement industry. At ACC Madukkarai cement works, Coimbatore, Tamilnadu, full fledged mineral beneficiation process is adopted to enhance the quality of low grade lime stone from 38-42 % CaO to 45-47 % CaO and silica reduced from 19-22 % to 11-13 % by use of oleic acid (commercial grade and vegetable origin) 0.38 kg/ton of limestone and caustic soda 0.05 kg/ton of limestone. Based on the characteristics of typical marine sedimentary phosphate rock in Guizhou, Southwest China, together with the research findings made on the surface electric properties of pure collophanites taken from different areas in pure water and under the action of collectors, a pure minerals flotation test of collophanite was conducted in this research. The differences of collophanite flotation behavior and the effects of the different pH values, varieties, and dosage of collector on flotation separation of collophanite were studied. It is suggested that that in pure water, collophanite had a negative charge within a wide pH range. The electro negativity values of collophanite increased with the addition of collectors GJBW and WF-01. When GJBW and WF-01 were used as collectors, the collophanite was depressed in acid medium, but had a good flotability in basic medium.

The present study is devoted to improvement of the leaching efficiency during phosphorous removal from high phosphorous gravity-magnetic concentrate. Before leaching the concentrate has been subjected to roasting with the addition of either Ca(OH)2 or CaO. The oolitic iron ore is roasted at 900°C for one hour. This reflects in reaction between alkaline earth additive and quartz, aluminosilicates, phosphorus, and some other minor components of the gangue minerals. The application of leaching, physical separation, and wash out of salts has resulted in the decrease of phosphorus from 0.7 to 0.15 % and it is established that the major influencing factor is the concentration of acid and to a less extent duration of the leaching process. About two third of the phosphorus can be removed by roasting with 3 % CaO to hematite, coarse grinding to d50 0.3 mm, dry high intensity magnetic separation and leaching of the magnetic fraction with hydro-chloric or nitric acid.

In this investigation, one of the most energy consuming stage of the cement manufacturing process, grinding stage, was studied. The aim of the study is to reduce the energy consumption. Optimum operating parameters were determined. Experimental studies were performed at three differ-ent stages. Grinding of limestone, clay and marl which are the main components of the cement, to approximately below 90 microns, was the first stage of the cement grinding. At this stage, effect of feed size and ball charge were investigated. At the second stage, the Bond work index of clinker and additives (slag, trass, limestone and gypsum) was found separately. After forming composite cement with clinker and additives, the Bond work index of this mixture was also determined, thus the results of separate grinding and grinding of mixture were compared. The Bond work index of mixture was found as 13.59 kWh/t, while the arithmetic mean of the Bond work index values of components was 14.90 kWh/t. Finally, clinker and additives (slag, trass, limestone and gypsum) were ground under the same conditions. At this stage, laboratory type of ball mill was used in order to understand grinding characteristics of the cement components. As a result of the experiments, it was found that energy consumption for the grinding will be lowered if the mills with 38 % ~ 40 % ball charge are used in the cement grinding. Moreover, grinding with mixture of clinker and additives gave better results than separate grinding of these components in terms of energy consumption.
