The CO oxidation reaction has been studied on Au/TiO2 catalysts prepared by incipient wetness (IW) and deposition-precipitation (DP) methods. Additionally the assessment of activity was also conducted on simple gold compounds (Au2O3 and Au(OH)3) and their physical mixtures with TiO2. We have found that there are three types of CO2 production from fresh catalysts, which are only dried, namely: Non-catalytic Type I (low temperature CO2 production); Non-catalytic Type II (higher temperature CO2 production) and Catalytic Type III. The DP catalysts are far more active for Type III reaction, showing activity already at room temperature, whereas the IW catalysts generally do not show steady state conversion until T>673 K. This is due to both large particle size and the presence of residual chlorine for the latter. No truly catalytic activity was found for low temperature CO oxidation on gold precursors on their own, although both Au2O3 and Au(OH)3 react well with CO even at room temperature in an irreversible manner (Type I reaction). Despite that, catalytic activity was obtained by mixing Au(OH)3 or Au2O3 with TiO2 which gives further emphasis on the importance of a good contact gold/support and the absence of chlorine.

A numerical model has been developed to study the air flow in the flow plate and gas diffusion layer assembly on the cathode side of a PEM fuel cell. The flow plate in this type of fuel cell often has serpentine channels and the porous layer is adjacent to the flow plate to diffuse the air to the catalyst layer. Flow cross-over of air through the porous diffusion layer from one part of the channel to another can occur. This flow cross¬over is a result of the pressure differences between different parts of the channel, and it causes the flow rate through the channel to vary with the distance along the channel. A numerical study of pressure distribution and flow cross-over through the gas diffusion layer (GDL) in PEMFC flow field using a serpentine channel system has therefore been undertaken to compare the cases of a single channel and two parallel channels, with the channels having a trapezoidal cross-sectional shape. The purpose of the present work was to study the effect of the flow plate geometry on the basic fluid flow through the plate. The flow here has been assumed to be three-dimensional, steady, incompressible, isothermal and single-phase. The flow through the porous diffusion layer has been described using the Darcy model. The dimensionless governing equations have been solved by using the commercial CFD solver, FIDAP. From the results obtained, it can be found that the single channel systems have greater maximum flow rate difference than the parallel channel systems under the conditions considered in the present study. Also, the size ratio R of trapezoidal cross-sectional shape has a significant effect on the flow cross-over and pressure variation in the flow field.

In 1955, the results of a regional, geological interpretation of the northern portion of New Brunswick were used as a basis for selecting, for intensive exploration, three areas in which structural and stratigraphic conditions were believed to be favourable. Airborne electromagnetic work, in one of these areas, provided the justification for acquiring the Murray group. Even though the initial results were discouraging, this geological interpretation, combined with the fortuitous discovery of cop• per-bearing float, was sufficient reason for carrying out further work using geochemical methods. This work finally resulted in the discovery of the Murray massive-sulphide deposit, after about eighteen months of coordinated exploration on the property. The Iberian Pyrite Belt (SW Spain and Portugal) contains one of the largest reserves of pyrite in the world with mining activities dating back to prehistoric times. About one hundred abandoned mine wastes and galleries release a huge acidity and metal load to the Tinto and Odiel rivers. Once the mining activity is over, polluting discharges can persists for decades or even centuries with no specific responsible entity. In-situ passive remediation technologies are especially suitable for these orphan sites. The concept is to insert a reactive porous material in the natural flow path of contaminated surface and ground waters, and it is implemented through infiltration ponds and reactive barriers, respectively. Calcium carbonate pea-size gravel is the common alkalinity supplier to neutralize acidity and precipitate metals. These remediation systems have been traditionally implemented in coal mines. However, the acid drainages from the Iberian Pyrite Belt contain metal concentrations one to two orders of magnitude higher than those from coal mines and require special designs to avoid quick clogging or passivation (coating) of the grains of reactive material. To overcome these problems, a Dispersed Alkaline Substrate (DAS) mixed from fine-grained limestone sand and a coarse inert matrix (e.g. wood chips) was developed. The small grains provide a large reactive surface and dissolve almost completely before the growing layer of precipitates passivates the substrate. The high porosity and the dispersion of nuclei for precipitation on the inert surfaces retard clogging. However, limestone dissolution only raises pH to values around 6.5, which is sufficient to precipitate the hydroxides of trivalent metals (Al, Fe), but it is not alkaline enough to remove divalent metals. Magnesium oxide, which hydrates to Mg hydroxide upon contact with water, buffers the solution pH between 8.5 and 10. A DAS system replacing limestone with caustic magnesium oxide has been tested to be very efficient to remove divalent metals (Zn, Cd, Mn, Cu, Co, Ni, Pb) from drainage previously treated with limestone.

The Committee's proposed standards establish definitions and guidelines for the reporting of Exploration Information, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves in Canada and are identified as the "CIM Standards" and referred to as such hereafter in this document. To provide additional clarification to Qualified Persons (QPs), guidelines have been included with the respective definitions. The CIM Standards are applicable to all minerals including industrial minerals, diamonds and other gemstones. Reserve definitions for bitumen, natural gas and oil are not included in these Standards. The CIM Standards are not intended to cover mineral inventory estimates that will be reported to government agencies.

THE material improvements which have been made in the practice of exploiting oil and gas reservoirs in the United States during recent years may be attributed largely to: (1) The necessity for drilling deeper wells at costs not much greater than was formerly expended on shallower wells. (2) The necessity for producing oil at a lower cost per barrel. (3) A growing recognition of the importance of the nature of production practice upon ultimate yield of oil and gas. The first two of these factors result, to a large extent, from the fact that a greater proportion of new development has been deeper development, and these wells have been drilled in the face of progressively lower per well allowables. In California, for instance, maximum allowables have declined from 400 barrels per day in March, 1938, to 156 barrels per day in September, 1940, and during this same period some 125 wells were drilled to the deeper 10,000-foot producing horizons discovered during this time. The third item listed above results from our increasing knowledge of the basic factors which influence the amount of recovery we may expect from reservoirs. In addition to the longer-range planning now being undertaken by the more prudent operators, State proration and conservation laws have focused attention upon the importance of methods conducive to obtaining progressively greater quantities of the hydrocarbons in place. In a paper of this length it will be possible to discuss only a few of the recent advances. An effort has been made to select the more important of these and to indicate, where possible, the factors which have made these advances possible.

The iron and steel industry accounts for almost 5 % of the total world CO2 emissions. Optimisation of the steelmaking process has led to significant reductions in the energy intensity to the point where it is now close to the thermodynamic limit. Further reductions are not likely to be achieved with efficiency improvement alone and will require the development of novel or breakthrough technologies. This paper will show the costs of implementing CO2 capture at direct atmospheric emission points for a number of iron and steel production processes. These include a conventional process, top gas recycling processes, the Corex and Hismelt smelt reduction processes and the Midrex direct reduction process. Depending on the point source emission, costs of capture with existing chemical absorption technology at iron and steel plants can be similar to capturing CO2 at pulverised coal fired power plants.

As one of effective usages of wastes discharged in the non-ferrous metal industry, the syntheses of AlPO4-5 and hydrotalcite were carried out using aluminium dross as a raw material. AlPO4-5 is an aluminium phosphate condensate with properties of zeolitic materials and large pore size. Hydrotalcite is an inorganic anion exchanger and has a layered structure of complex hydroxide. They were synthesized in an autoclave at high temperature and pressure. Various physical properties such as crystal structure, surface texture, and specific surface area were measured. AlPO4-5 can be synthesized from aluminium dross under hydrothermal conditions at 180°C-200°C, and 3h. At the same time, AlPO4-34 and non-porous AlPO4 were also formed as by-products. The crystals of AlPO4-5 have a hexagonal structure. Lt is desirable to heat the reaction product at around 550 °C to remove tri-ethyl amine. The specific surface areas of the reaction product before and after heat treatment at 550°C were 17.9m2/g and 358m2/g, respectively. Hydrotalcite can be obtained by a co-precipitation method from the aluminium dross and waste MgCl2 solution discharged in the aluminium regeneration process. Small amounts of SiO2, Al2O3, and Fe2O3 remain in the reaction product as an impurity component. The interlayer distance of the obtained reaction product is about 0.3 nm. Hydrotalcite changes to Mg-Al oxide during calcination at 500 °C for 3h, and then hydrotalcite is formed again by a rehydration operation. The physical properties of the reaction products obtained from the wastes were very similar to those from fresh reagents.

"IntroductionMANITOBA'S first recoverable oil was from the California Standard Daly 15-18 well in Lsd. 15, Sec. 18, Twp. 10, Range 27, W.P.M., completed early in 1951. This well also gave the first indications of commercial production in the Williston basin, which is centred in North Dakota and extends into southeastern Saskatchewan and southwestern Manitoba. Subsequent drilling in the Manitoba portion of the basin has revealed the presence of oil in more or less commercial quantities at various points in an area approximately four townships in width and eleven townships in length.Although completions are becoming fairlly widespread in the area,, the greatest activity is in the Virden district, with the focal point in the Daly field, approximately eight miles west •of Virden. This paper will deal with the various techniques used in the Daly field, where •completion problems have •been unusually troublesome. Techniques evolved there have already been used with success at other points in southwestern Manitoba.Daly FieldGeneralTo date, all production has been from the Mississippian limestone, which is encountered •at depths ranging from 2,300 to 2,500 feet. Pay thickness is •of the order of 100 feet. Core analyses indicate average porosity .of about 9 per cent but permeabilities, for the most part, are extremely low."

Optimizing the long-term efficiency of passive systems for the treatment of highly contaminated acid mine drainage (AMD) is still a challenging issue. The optimization lies, among others, on improving the understanding and quantification of metal removal mechanisms in order to predict and enhance the stability of neo-formed minerals in secondary phases. Sorption, and precipitation as oxides-hydroxides, carbonates and bio-sulfides are likely the most important metal removal mechanisms involved in passive biotreatment of both slightly and highly contaminated AMD. In the same time, the preferred mechanism is precipitation of metal sulfides that are more stable and less pH dependent than carbonates and oxides-hydroxides. However, results of relatively recent research studies performed at laboratory scale showed that sulfides accounted only for up to 15% of total metals removed in passive bioreactors treating highly contaminated AMD dominated by iron (around 500 mg/L). Several approaches were used in the aforementioned studies to understand and quantify metal removal mechanisms in spent reactive mixtures collected from long-term (12-15 months) operating column bioreactors. These included: thermodynamic equilibrium modeling and various chemical extractions and mineralogical analyses (such as single and sequential extractions, acid volatile sulfides-simultaneously extracted metals determination, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and thermo-gravimetric analysis). The large proportion of metals (85%) removed by sorption and precipitation as oxides-hydroxides and carbonates suggests a relatively high mobility of the neoformed minerals, especially in low pH conditions. However, no data is available on the long-term stability of spent reactive mixtures and, on the implications for the sustainable management of this type of solid waste. Lately there is almost a consensus that the efficiency of highly contaminated AMD treatment is warranted by the use of multi-step passive systems, including both chemical and biological units, installed sequentially. However, very few well-documented studies are available on the design, construction, operation and long-term efficiency of these multi-step systems. A leading example is the tri-unit passive system installed on the abandoned Lorraine mine site (Québec) to treat a highly contaminated AMD dominated by iron (about 2,500 mg/L). This tri-step system (160 m3), consisting in two bioreactors separated by a unit filled with wood ashes, achieves to date a satisfactory removal of iron (up to 99%). Moreover, based on the data collected during laboratory testing, iron was mainly removed in the wood ashes unit (from around 3,200 mg/L to 10 mg/L) by precipitation of oxides-hydroxides as predominant mechanism and only partially by sorption. However, no data is available on the actual metal removal mechanisms in the field. Overall, theses multi-step systems are more complex and their long-term performance is even less predictable than the single unit systems. This paper presents the current knowledge and the research needs on metal removal mechanisms in passive bioreactors and multi-step systems for the long-term treatment of highly contaminated AMD. This paper is a study of the application of the science of coal petrology to the use of coal in the iron and steel industry. The petrography of coal is given the most attention, with some mention of coal palynology. The history of the petrographical analysis of coal is first out-lined, with a description of the various coal entities, and then the apparatus and experimental techniques employed for coal evaluation are discussed. The coke stability factor and the relation of coke strength to petrographical data are also covered, and some space is given to the new science of coke microscopy, in particular its use in following the oxidation of coals.

Gold recovery from refractory ores can be very difficult and complicated depending on the causes of the refractoriness. Typically, a fine wind and/or the oxidation of the gold-bearing sulfide minerals are required to liberate gold from the host rock matrix. Mineral separation techniques, particularly surface¬wettability based separation (i.e., flotation) and magnetic separation, can be used to pre-concentrate the gold and sulfide minerals, or to remove mineral species that are harmful either to the oxidation of the gold-bearing sulfides or to the cyanidation following the oxidation. In this paper, several processes are described, including oil-agglomeration flotation recovery of fine-grained gold and sulfide, reverse flotation of carbonate minerals prior to pressure or bio oxidation, reverse flotation of elemental sulfur after pressure or bio oxidation but prior to cyanide leaching, and magnetic concentration of gold-bearing iron oxides. The integration of these techniques with gold hydrometallurgical processes may make the economic recovery of gold from an otherwise uneconomic refractory ore possible.

"Crucible slag tests were employed to evaluate different refractory brick classes for the Cerro Matoso electric furnace. Comprehensive analysis was conducted to evaluate the crucible erosion and characterize any slag/refractory reaction products.The classes of refractories investigated were:•,tar-impregnated magnesia;•,rebonded fused grain magnesia-chrome;•,direct bonded magnesia-chrome;•,alumina-chrome;•,picrochromite; and•,magnesia-alumina (spinel).It was concluded that tar-impregnated MgO bricks were the most suitable for the slag chemistry and furnace environment according to corrosion and infiltration resistance. A picrochromite (MgCr2O4) brick performed exceptionally well with regards to erosion resistance, however, the slag infiltrated extensively through the brick pores. Alumina-chrome, direct bonded magnesia-chromite, and spinel (magnesia-alumina) bricks were evaluated as not suitable for use in the furnace."

"Geosynthetics engineering has made phenomenal advances during the last decade in areas of manufacturing as well as practical applications. As a result, geosynthetics are now being recognized as essential construction materials that can be used to facilitate construction, ensure better performance of the structures and reduce the long-term maintenance in routine civil engineering works. The creative use of geosynthetics in geo-engineering practice is expected to continuously expand as innovative materials and products are becoming available. In this paper, a wide variety of geosynthetic products available to geoengineers to solve a wide range of problems are briefly presented along with their functions and possible applications. Fundamentals of geotextile filter design principles are then introduced for use in the tunnel drainage system. Practical applications of geosynthetics relevant for tunnel engineering are also highlighted with emphasis on the issues associated with the geotextile filter application for use in the tunnel drainage system.INTRODUCTIONGeosynthetics have emerged as essential engineering materials in a wide range of civil engineering applications, e.g., transportation, geotechnical, geoenvironmental, hydraulics, and private development since the first geosynthetic conference in Paris, 1977 (Koerner 2012). Due to their costeffectiveness, ease of installation, and well established mechanical and hydraulic properties, geosynthetics are now playing important roles in the field of geo-engineering.As indicated in the 9th Bucahanan Lecture paper by Holtz (2001), major developments in civil engineering have only been possible with the parallel developments in the technology of construction materials. For example, larger scale structures became possible with the help of developments in concrete, reinforced concrete, and prestressed reinforced concrete technology which replaced wood and building stone as construction materials. The best example of a parallel development in geo-engineering between the material and the geotechnical application may perhaps be the soil reinforcement technology which has a direct analogy with reinforced concrete as a polymeric reinforcement material provides added level of tensile resistance and stability to soils that have little to no tensile strength, thus giving additional margin of safety."
