The hydrogen embrittlement and stress-corrosion cracking (SCC) behavior of an a -titanium alloy and its two kinds of welding samples have been investigated. The results show that this alloy has very low susceptibility to SCC, and the values of Kiscc for the alloy are 46.4 MPa ? m' 65.86 MPa ? mu2 in the direction of T-L and L-T, respectively. The scanning electron fractographs show transgranular and quasi-cleavage fracture. The hydrogen embrittlement results show that the notch sample of the alloy is not sensitive to hydrogen, but the electro-beam welding and diving-arc welding samples are sensitive.

The theoretical capacity of various ground support components can be misleading, especially in bursting ground where the failure mode is often in the retainment system. Wire mesh screen seams often peel open rather than breaking the wire strands, fractured rock often un-ravels around the bolts rather than breaking the bars. If a weak link(s) in the system fails prematurely, then the potential capacity of the system may never be fully realized. Underground observations are used to show how some support systems behave in the field. Various combinations of wire mesh screen with friction bolts, rebar, modified conebolts, cablebolts, shotcrete and mechanical rockbolts are considered. A short case history is used to contrast the performance of ?just-intime? development in a high stress faulted area versus a tunnel subjected to multiple stress changes in a similar environment. The latter proved to be a serious ground support problem when the well developed fracture zone around the opening was subjected to dynamic loading from a large seismic event causing a severe rockburst. In such cases an improved mining strategy may be more relevant than higher capacity support systems.

Shipping and stevedoring industry is going to witness a massive increase in the amount of containers to be handled while land constraints become more critical. Offshore transfer operations hence offer a preferable solution to deal with the surge in cargos rather than to expand the port outwards. Recently, there has been increasing research interests on offshore crane automation. Suspended cargos in a ship-mounted crane system are caused to swing due to the vibratory motion of the ship induced by ocean waves, which can lead to collision between cargos and deck. Therefore, it is vital for offshore crane systems to satisfy rigorous requirements in terms of safety and efficiency. This paper presents the modelling and control development for offshore boom crane systems. A second-order sliding mode control law is proposed for trajectory tracking and sway suppression control, making use of its capability of actuator chattering alleviation while achieving high tracking performance and preserving strong robustness. The asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system is guaranteed in the Lyapunov sense. Simulation results indicate that the proposed controller can significantly reduce the effect of disturbances coming from gusty waves and other dynamic loadings.

Nanostructured Cu-Al203 composite powders were synthesized by thermochemical process for an electrode application. The synthesis procedures are 1) preparation of precursor powder by spray drying of solution made from copper and aluminum nitrates, 2) heat treatments to evaporate volatile components in the precursor powder and synthesis of nanostructured CuO+Al2O3, and 3) CuO reduction by hydrogen into Cu. The suggested procedures stimulated the formation of the gamma-Al2O3. The mean particle size of the final composite powders was 20nm, and the electrical conductivity and hardness in the hot-extruded bulk were competitive with Cu/Al2O3 composite by the conventional internal oxidation process.

We investigate the technical feasibility of bioleaching of metals from low grade sulphidic ore. Experiments were conducted with an adapted consortium of Sulfobacillus thermosulfidooxidans and Thermoplasm acidophilum in batch bioreactors (1.5 L), small columns (10 kg ore load, 8 % S0 sludge) and large columns (80 kg ore load, 12 % S0 sludge). Approximately 83 % Ni, 85 % Cu, 55 % Fe and 81 % Zn was leached out in batch mode while 93 % Ni, 89 % Zn, 81 % Cu and 65 % Fe was leached out in column reactors. Bioleaching potential improved by acid pre-leaching, adaptation of microbial consortium and periodic bleeding of effluents.

"Wear damage is responsible for very high maintenance costs and significant production losses in the oil sands industry of northern Alberta.It affects all areas of operations and involves a panoply of wear mechanisms from low stress sliding abrasion at extremely frigid temperatures during winter mining, to elevated temperature erosion/corrosion in processes where bitumen is converted to lighter hydrocarbon products.There is no universal panacea to defend against such diverse attack and a wide selection of resistant materials and systems is employed. These range from relatively soft rubbers which rely on their elastic properties for their protective capability, to some of the hardest ceramics and cermets which are currently available commercially.Details are presented of the characteristics and forms of the variety of wear materials being used and how they relate to the requirements of their areas of application. The review focuses on the practices followed at Syncrude Canada Ltd., which is the larger of the two commercial oil sands plants."

In his Budget Speech on March 31, 1 977, the Honourable Donald S. Macdonald expressed concern about the financing of investments through new equity issues. He mentioned the need to render more attractive participation in the equity market by investors in all in come brackets. One of the measures introduced in the budget to accomplish this goal is the proposal to increase the dividend gross-up and tax credit in respect of most dividends received by an individual from Canadian companies. The lack of adequate gas mass transfer is a rate limiting step in many bacterial leaching processes. Oxygen often becomes a limiting factor because of its low solubility compared to the high demand induced by sulfide oxidation. One way of increasing the solubility of oxygen in water or in media solution is by increasing the driving force, i.e. raising the oxygen partial pressure in the gas stream supplied to the leach pulp. The use of oxygen is a well-known practice in high-temperature bioleaching reactors (above 70°C) whereas air is usually preferred in medium and low-temperature operations in order to avoid too high dissolved oxygen concentrations which could impact negatively the bacterial activity. The purpose of this study was to investigate the use of oxygen-enriched gas in bioleaching reactors at 40°C in order to improve the gas transfer in the system when operating at high solid load (20% and more). Bioleaching experiments were performed on a sulfide-rich tailing waste (pyrite 60%, copper 0.8%, cobalt 0.06 %, gold 1 g/t) using the “BRGM-KCC” bacterial consortia. The reactor used for the tests was designed on the basis of a new bioleaching reactor concept developed by Air Liquide, Milton Roy Mixing and the BRGM which uses floating agitators to inject gases and to mix and to suspend solids in the bioleaching solution. Two types of tests were carried out: with air injection and with oxygen enriched gas mix injection. The aim of this work was to confirm the capacity of bacteria to grow and to dissolve pyrite in this type of bioreactors in oxygenrich atmosphere, and to compare sulfides dissolution rates during both types of bioleaching tests. The results obtained show that the use of oxygen enriched gas mix does not decrease bioleaching performances compared to air injection. High metal extraction yields were achieved (above 80%). No deleterious effect due to oxygen use was observed on the bacteria despite the high level of dissolved oxygen reached in oxygen tests (up to 14 mg.L-1).

The degree to which copper will continue to be in an integral part of the world economy in the future will depend largely on the dynamics of global economic development, the primary and secondary copper resource stock, technological change, and potential environmental constraints. We have characterized the copper cycle of 1994 for all of Earth's regions and for the planet itself (T. Graedel et al., Environmental Science & Technology, 38, 1242-1252, 2004) and recently updated that cycle to year 2000. In this paper, we compare various features of the 1994 and 2000 cycles. The three largest-using regions, Asia, Europe, and North America, all increased their absolute rate of copper use between 1994 and 2000, and all increased the per-capita rate of copper use as well. Globally, the use of copper increased by about 32%, from 11.7 to 15.3 million metric tons, while population increased by only 8%. Various changes are seen in scrap trade, finished products trade, and other parameters of the cycle. We conclude by considering how the rates of technological change and growth in demand, especially in Asia, may influence the copper cycle in the years ahead.

"Some typical landslide phenomena in Western Greece, in terms of the geological composition and structure of the affected materials, induced by heavy rainfalls are thoroughly studied and analyzed. The studied cases involved composite landslides on Flysch and Neogene weak rock materials that constitute the most critical landslide prone geological formations in Greece. The studied cases named Platanos, Platanitis and Karya include representative landslide sites as regards to the geological composition and structure of the displaced formations. Thus: (a) flysch formation includes different lithological units as shales, marls, siltstones, sandstones and conglomerates and is closely related to the Alpine orogenesis, suffering intense past tectonic movements and (b) the Plio-Pleistocene sediments include clayey marls, marlstones and siltstones. The investigated landslides , affecting mainly transportation routes, are closely related to heavy rainfalls induced by extreme meteorological events and are controlled by active fault tectonics. Long term movement monitoring using borehole inclinometers and surface benchmarks showed that landslides control was effective only when the proper stabilization measures were taken.INTRODUCTIONLandslides represent a major threat to human life, property, infrastructure and natural environment in most regions of the world. They are recognized by the scientific and politic authorities as having a major socio-economic impact and they represent a significant hazard for the population and the properties in particular locations. Landslide hazard expressed as the probability of occurrence within a reference time period and is a function of the spatial and temporal probability (Varnes, 1984; Guzzetti et al. 1999; Lee and Jones, 2004). The spatial probability of landslide initiation (susceptibility) is mainly related to static causal factors (slope inclination, material properties, etc.), while temporal probability is mainly related to dynamic causal factors such as rain input, increased groundwater levels and drainage, earthquakes, etc. (Van Westen et al. 2005)."

An open-pit mining operation can be viewed as a process by which the open surface of a mine is continuously deformed. The planning of a mining program involves the design of the final shape of this open surface. The approach developed in this paper is based on the following assumptions: 1. the type of material its mine value and its extraction cost is given for each point; 2. restrictions on the geometry of the pit are specified (surface boundaries and maximum allowable wall slopes); 3. The objective is to maximize total profit-total mine value of material extracted minus total extraction cost. Two numeric methods are proposed: A simple dynamic programming algorithm for the two-dimensional pit (or a single vertical section of a mine), and. a more elaborate graph algorithm for the general three-dimensional pit. "This paper focuses on a number of interesting results to establish the theory and principle of air-deck blasting. It also gives the mechanism of breakage that takes place in air-deck blasting under varying charge load conditions. With these aspects in mind, the mine management can implement this up-coming technology to enhance safety and higher productivity. IntroductionThe method of air-decking has become an increasingly popular technique in production and presplit blasting. In the blasthole, an explosive column is combined with an airchamber. The main aim of the technique is to control breakage through effective distribution of explosive energy and thereby enhance uniform rock fragmentation. An air column lowers the initial pressure of the explosive products and simultaneously increases the time of interaction for the detonation front with the surrounding rock, which enhances rock breakage.To study air-deck blasting, CMRI initially conducted experiments using indigenously developed, low-cost wooden spacers of different sizes and strengths. Air-deck blasting was first tried using these spacers in 1993 at Jambad OCP, ECL and Chasnalla OCP, IISCO. The experiments were extended in 1994 at Bermo Mine, DVC. The results were subsequently published by Pal Roy et al., in 1995. It is worth mentioning that the performance of air-deck blasting during this period was only compared with conventional blasting practices without going into detail of the theory behind the process."

Introduction While pilot-mill operations were being carried on at Flin Flon, as described by R. E. Phelan (1), a detailed topographic map was being made of the area in the vicinity of the ore-body for later use in laying out plans for the final plant. The area covered by this survey was 6,600 feet by 6,600 feet, with contours on 2-foot intervals. As mentioned by Mr. Phelan, it was definitely decided at the end of November, 1927, to take up the option on the Flin Flon property and to proceed immediately with the plans for construction of a metallurgical plant at Flin Flon to treat 3,000 tons of ore per day, and of a hydro-electric power plant at Island Falls, Saskatchewan, to supply power for the future operations at Flin Flon. Railway Built From The Pas to Flin Flon Just as soon as the decision was made to go ahead with the construction work and opening-up of the property, it was of course essential to give immediate attention to the building of a railway to the mine. Many years previously, a preliminary survey had been made for a railway to branch off the Hudson Bay railway at a point 4.7 miles northeast of The Pas, and, during certain negotiations in 1925, the Provincial Government of Manitoba had agreed to guarantee the railway bonds necessary to finance the building of the line, so that it was possible to organize for this work immediately. A contract was let by the newly organized Manitoba Northern Railway Company to the Dominion Construction Company, Ltd., and Tomlinson, for the building of the railway to the mine, a distance of approximately 87 miles (see Figure 1). The Manitoba Northern railway is a subsidiary to the Canadian National railway, and all engineering and supervision of the contractors was done by the Canadian National engineers. Actual construction work was started in January, 1928. The first 52 miles of the railway from The Pas to Cranberry Portage is over fairly level, although slightly rolling, country, and a considerable portion of the route is over muskeg area. Rails were laid on top of the frozen muskegs. Gravel deposits were opened-up along the line and, before warm weather; sufficient ballast .was distributed in the muskeg areas to prevent thawing under the track, and thus give the necessary support to allow uninterrupted transportation over the line.

This paper presents a novel action recognition method for observing human workers using interactions between actions and related objects on an internal construction site. This method can be used to measure work rates for labour productivity monitoring. This monitoring is critical because the performance of a construction project is significantly impacted by labour productivity. However, construction sites are generally crowded with a large number of workers and objects. Such congestion disrupts the accurate, automatic recognition of construction workers? actions. This congestion is one reason that existing automatic action recognition studies of construction areas mainly focus on workers? actions themselves. However, the crowded conditions mean that sites could offer a great deal of clues that could be used for automatic action recognition. According to psychological studies, interactions clearly take place between human actions and related objects, such as between hammering and a hammer. Humans use these interactions to recognize actions or objects more accurately. On the construction site, workers, materials, tools, and equipment are carefully planned out ahead of actual construction. The categories of workers and objects are pre-defined and, as noted, specific interactions define relations between worker actions and objects. In this paper, the interactions are limited to human workers and their hand-held objects. Action recognition results can be combined with hand-held object information to improve recognition accuracy. With the limited interactions, experiments in this paper show a significant improvement in action recognition. This paper describes the utilization of these interactions to improve construction action recognition accuracy based on human skeleton data and 2D color video from Microsoft KINECT sensor.

"Bessemer matte iron content is a critical process parameter that needs to be closely monitored and controlled in order to achieve optimal Ni/Cu smelter returns. Current process control practices during Ni/Cu converting often rely on visual observations and typically involve matte sampling to confirm that target composition was reached. A high-level techno-economic analysis study was carried out to evaluate potential direct benefits of advanced process control during the final stages of Ni/Cu matte converting. The results indicate that the magnitude of direct benefits will largely depend on matte iron control practices already implemented as well as matte iron set point. Preliminary assessment suggests that under the assumptions used in this study, implementation of advanced process control can potentially result in additional revenues ranging from several hundreds of thousands to tens of millions of US dollars per year per converter producing about 200 tonnes of Bessemer matte per day based on Ni, Cu, and Co metal recoveries alone.INTRODUCTION Real-time measurement of molten metal elemental composition, arguably, remains one of the key unresolved issues impeding full automation and real-time optimization of pyrometallurgical operations in different industrial areas, including non-ferrous metals and ferro-alloys. In particular, current process control practices during Ni/Cu matte converting often rely on visual observations and typically involve matte sampling in order to confirm target matte composition. In addition to being time consuming, this approach relies heavily on operator experience and diligence, and, therefore, requires continuous performance and quality control efforts. For instance, the need to improve quality of the Bessemer matte (BM) at the Copper Cliff smelter has prompted an impressive staff engagement and training campaign that was carried out by Vale’s team in the late 2000’s (Zanini, Wong, & Cooke, 2012). This training exercise was executed to address the compounded effect of several operational challenges, namely demand for higher throughputs, changes in the feed concentrate composition, increased feed variability, loss of process knowledge and expertise due to retirement, as well as lack of a comprehensive approach to improving the overall performance of the flowsheet rather than meeting production targets for intermediate products. Although the campaign was very successful and has resulted in significant improvements in the Bessemer matte quality, it has also highlighted the need to move away from “the-art-of-converting” and develop analytical tools that would enable real-time process monitoring."

Acid mine drainage (AMD) remains one of the major environmental problems for the mining industry particularly for many abandoned mine sites. The production of AMD as is commonly known can significantly affect the surrounding groundwater and surface water of the mine site. With the objective to investigate the impact of the AMD produced at the abandoned Kettara mine site (Morocco), groundwater sampling campaign was performed at this site. The sampled waters were analyzed to determine the hydrogeochemical composition, and then results were analyzed using different studied methods such as multivariate statistical analysis and geochemical modeling techniques. Investigation results show that the hydrochemistry of sampled waters is characterized by the relatively significant enrichment of Ca2+, Mg2+ and SO4 2-. The typical mine waters belong to the (Ca2+ +Mg2+)-SO4 2-type. Seasonal variations in major ion concentrations were partly attributed to dissolution/ precipitation processes. The saturation index (SI) calculation of the representative dissolved minerals in waters show that groundwater samples are undersaturated with respect to most potential sulphated secondary minerals.

"Cigar Lake high-grade uranium mine in Saskatchewan is operating after 25 years of test mining, construction, and mine flood remediation. Factors include ground stability, groundwater control, radiation exposure, and ore handling. A 10 year test program resulted in validating “jet boring”, a non-entry mining method involving artificially freezing the orebody and surrounding rock; tunnelling to develop access crosscuts below the orebody; installing cased pilot holes through ore; extracting ore using rotating high-pressure water jets within pilot holes; and cavity concrete backfilling. Ore slurry is prepared underground, pumped to surface, and trucked to McClean Lake mill for processing to uranium concentrate.RÉSUMÉ Après 25 années d’essais sur les méthodes minières, de construction et d’assainissement suivant les inondations à la mine, l’exploitation de minerai à haute teneur en uranium Cigar Lake, localisée dans la province de la Saskatchewan, est opérationnelle. Les principales difficultés concernent la stabilité du terrain, le contrôle des eaux souterraines, l’exposition aux rayonnements et la manutention du minerai. Un programme d’essai de 10 ans a abouti à la validation du « forage à érosion », une méthode minière qui consiste à congeler artificiellement le corps minéralisé et les roches environnantes ; à creuser des tunnels pour développer des travers-bancs d’accès en dessous du corps minéralisé ; à installer des puits de fondation pilotes à travers le minerai ; à extraire le minerai à l’aide de jets d’eau à haute pression dans les puits pilotes ; et à remblayer les cavités avec du béton. La boue de minerai est préparée sous terre, pompée vers la surface puis transportée par camion jusqu’à l’usine de concentration de McClean Lake pour le traitement afin d’obtenir du concentré d’uranium.INTRODUCTIONThe Cigar Lake deposit is in northern Saskatchewan, 660 km north of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, at the east edge of the Athabasca basin (Figure 1; Bishop, Mainville, & Yesnik, 2016). The operation is jointly owned by Cameco Corporation, AREVA Resources Canada Inc., Idemitsu Canada Resources Ltd., and TEPCO Resources Inc. Cameco has been the operator of Cigar Lake since January 2002. The discovery hole was drilled in 1981. Commercial production was declared in May 2015 and the Phase 1 operation will have a mine life of 15 years."
