"The Rabbit Lake story began in the late sixties and will continue well into the twenty-first century. Two quite different geological systems host the five ore bodies mined, or slated to be mined. The importance of the Rabbit Lake operations - past, present and future.LocationThe Rabbit Lake operation is located in northeastern Saskatchewan (Fig. 1)- 805 km north of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and 814 km northeast of Edmonton, Alberta. OwnershipGulf Minerals Canada Limited discovered the Rabbit Lake deposit in 1968. Mining operations began in 1975and were operated by Gulf until purchased by Eldorado Nuclear Limited in 1982. In 1988, Eldorado merged with Saskatchewan Mining Development Corporation (SMDC) to form Cameco-A Canadian Mining &. Energy Corporation. The new corporation is one of the world 's largest uranium companies.Cameco's $1.5 billion in assets include the Rabbit Lake uranium mine (Cameco 100010); the Key Lake uranium mine (Cameco 66.67%; Uranerz Exploration and Mining Limited 33.33%); the Cluff Lake uranium mine (Cameco 20%; Amok Ltd. 80%); the Fuel Services Division at Blind River and Port Hope, Ontario (Cameco 100%); and a 100%); and a 48.75% interest in the Cigar Lake uranium deposit which is now at the test mining stage (Cogema Canada Ltd . 32.625% ; Idemitsu Uranium Exploration Canada Limited 12.875%; Corono Grande 3.75%; Korea Electric Power Corporation 2%). In addition, Cameco is involved in a number of base and precious metal explor ation projects."

"Sample drops were evaporated on Lexan disks on which fission tracks were etched and counted after neutron irradiation. [U] = 0.01 ppb could be measured. This method is rapid, cheap, simple and accurate when sufficient control and checking is possible, but several types of error were encountered in its use, the natures and sources of which were investigated but not always determined. The most troublesome were ""annealing"" processes which sometimes altered the fission tracks so that they were not fully revealed, or acquired varying appearances, after etching. Several different annealing processes seemed to exist and seemed to be produced by alteration of the Lexan surface by dissolved components in the solutions and, perhaps, by radiation and local heating during neutron irradiation. The appearances of the etched tracks varied with the natures of the droplet solutions even when annealing appeared to be absent, and for this reason, standards are best prepared by additions of known amounts of U to sample solutions. Contamination of sample droplets by U-containing dust from the air is best avoided by preparing the disks away from areas where other U-analysis is being carried out.IntroductionFission tracks are regions of radiation dam age produced in solids by the fission of atoms such as 235U. They can be enlarged to sizes visible through optical microscopes by etching surfaces through which they pass with solvents in which the solids are slightly soluble. A sample to be analyzed for U may be placed against a film of a solid of negligible uranium concentration (the track detector) and irradiated with thermal neutrons in a nuclear reactor to fission 235U. The track detector is then etched and the number of tracks per unit area, ?, which is proportional to the uranium concentration of the sample, c, and the neutron do se, n, is found by counting through a microscope. Uranium in solutions ha s been measured by evaporating drops on track detectors, irradiating, etching and determining the number of tracks per drop, T(2,3,4,5). "The Monkman Coal Property is located in the Northeast Coal Block of British Columbia. It is divided into the Duke Mountain Block on the north east and the Dip Slope on the west. Together, these areas cover 39,503 ha of coal licences.The property is underlain by Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous marine and continental sedimentary rocks. Economic coal measures are contained within the Gates Formation. Exploration of the property began in the early I970s, with drilling commencing in 1975. To date, 255 holes have been drilled and nine adits have been driven to recover unoxidized coal samples.The property has a geological resource potential of 2.8 billion tonnes of medium and high-volatile bituminous coal. Medium-volatile bituminous reserves, totalling 68.9 million ROM tonnes at an over-all strip ratio of 6.3:1, have been identified in three pit areas in the Duke Mountain Block.Construction start-up will commence when sales contracts are arranged. The clean coal will be exported via the Ridley Island Terminal at Prince Rupert.IntroductionThe Monkman Coal Property is located in the Northeast Coal Block of British Columbia in the southern port ion of the Peace River Coalfield. The coal field encompasses a strike length of 250 km of Lower Cretaceous coal-bearing strata in which 13 companies have identified several billion tonnes of resources and several hundred million tonnes of reserves. Currently, two companies with contracts are in the construction phase, and are scheduled to produce coal by early 1984. Quintette Coal Ltd. has a contract with Japanese steel mills to supply annually 5.0 million tonnes of metallurgical and 1.5 million tonnes of thermal coal. Teck Corporation (Bullmoose property) has a contract to supply 1.7 million tonnes of metallurgical coal annually."

"Résumé - Cette étude porte sur l'altération de la matière organique et des argiles dans les boues carbonatés dévoniennes du facies ""F' de la Formation de Pine Point et ses équivalents stratigraphiques la Formation d'Evie et l'unité bitumineuse de la base de la Fonnation de Hom River. La matière organique se compose principalement de bituré solide et de quelques fragments de fossiles (organaclastes). La majorité des échantillons ne renfement que de l'illite et des inter-stratifiées illite/smectite.Si on compare les températures d'homogénéisation (Th = 100°C) des inclusions fluides de la sphalérite et des dolomites associées a la minéralisation aux températures estimées à partir de la réflectance de la collinite (84°C à 117°C), l'on ne peut pas conclure à la présence d'une anomalie thermique dans le district minier de Pine Point. De plus, la réflectance des organoclastes n'est pas plus élevée dans le district minier de Pine Point que dans les localités plus éloignées des gites. L'analyse des minéraux argileux conduit à la même conclusion: aucune anomalie thermique n'est décelable dans les unités échantillonnées à l'intérieur du district minier de Pine Point quelque soit l'indicateur utilisé.La kaolinite et la matière organique altérée, affichant des valeurs anomales de sa réflectance, se trouve essentiellement en présence de soufre et de sulfures. Cela suggère une origine authigène de la kaolinite et une altération de la matière organique reliées au phénomènes de minéralisation.Abstract - The alteration of organic matter and clays is studied in the Devonian Pine Point Formation carbonate muds, ""F"" facies, and its lateral equivalents the Evie Formation and the bituminous unit at the base of the Hom River Formation. The organic matter is mainly composed of solid bitumen with few fossil fragments (organoclasts). Most samples contain only illite and mixed layer illite/smectite.If we compare the Th (100°C) from fluid inclusions of sphalerite and dolomites associated with mineralization to the temperatures calculated from the reflectance (Ro) of the collinite (84°C to 117°C), we cannot detect a thermal anomaly in the Pine Point mining district. This result is based on the reflectance values of organoclasts from the mining district that are not higher than those reflectance values measured on organic matter (OM) away from the ore deposit. A similar conclusion is reached from the clay study: none of the parameters used allow us to identify a thermal anomaly in the samples from the mining district.The kaolinite and the altered OM showing anomalous Ro values mainly occur with sulfides and sulfur. This association suggests an authigenic origin for the kaolinite and an alteration of the OM due to the mineralization events."

Table I shows major end-uses for industrial minerals in manufacturing sectors. At Energy, Mines and Resources, industrial minerals are divided in three major categories: (I) agro chemicals and chemicals, (2) construction mineral s, and (3) ceramics and specialty minerals. A listing of the major groups of minerals is shown in Table 2. Agro-chemicals and chemicals are sold on the basis of their chemical content and purity. Construction minerals or structural minerals are distinguished by their performance as low cost and bulky commodities. Ceramics and specialty minerals are performance-specific and are sold for their property on imparting functions on end-products. Industrial minerals have unique characteristics that are useful in many stages of processing; from crushed size to micronized fillers a single mineral ca n serve a broad range of industries because of its intrinsic properties."

Digital photogrammetry allows rapid, remote measurement of millions of points, thus providing an unprecedented amount of spatial information. Research is being conducted to explore practical applications of digital photogrammetry for monitoring, surveying and mapping in surface mines. The performance, accuracy and operational ease of digital photogrammetry are discussed and practical aspects of conducting digital photogrammetry surveys are reviewed. Case histories from coal, diamond and limestone mines are presented.

Introduction ? Today?s economic market is motivating underground mining companies to increase development advance rates and enhance their NPVs. ? For example, block cave mining involves development of kilometers of drifts with multiple pillars. ? The cyclic nature of drill and blast, and its inherent tendency to damage the surrounding excavation rock mass and increase support demand often result in poor advance rates ? This has motivated mining companies to replace the conventional drill-and-blast as the main excavation method with alternative methods such as mechanized excavation. ? There is little experience with mechanized or non-explosive excavation methods in hard rock metalliferous underground mining.

"The application of oxygen-enriched cyanidation to three Canadian gold ore samples has been investigated. The results showed that the use of oxygen can improve gold dissolution kinetics, reduce grinding time, and lower cyanide and lime consumptions. To obtain the same gold extraction, the required cyanide leaching time was reduced from 48 hours in slurry containing 8 ppm O2 to 12 - 24 hours in 20 ppm O2 slurry. Reagent consumptions were reduced by 23 - 37% for cyanide and by 35 - 54% for lime. There was little advantage to further increasing the dissolved oxygen to 32 ppm from 20 ppm. Gold extraction from the +200 mesh fraction improved 4 - 14% in oxygen-enriched slurry. A general kinetic model derived from the cyanidation of three ore samples can be described by the following equation: <equation>where E is the gold extraction (%) at time t (hours), EI is the ultimate gold extraction (%) , and &apos;P and k are constants depending on cyanide concentration, level of dissolved oxygen, and the characteristics of the ore samples. Comparative studies of conventional carbon adsorption and carbon adsorption in oxygen-enriched slurry have also demonstrated that oxygen enrichment resulted in more favourable conditions for gold adsorption."

"A growing environmental awareness hos prompted the mineral industry to seek innovations in waste management and technology. It is estimated that over 500 million metric tonnes of solid waste each year are rejected by the Canadian mineral industry. This waste hos to be disposed of in the most environmentally and economically acceptable manner.An extensive study has been conducted to estimate the cost of implementing total tailings fill from a waste disposal point-of-view as an alternative to large-scale surface disposal of tailings. The cost of waste disposal at the surface (tailings pond), and underground (total tailings fill) for three Canadian mines which have taken part in Quebec Mine Survey conducted in 1992 are analyzed. Surface disposal is the most economical and common method of mine waste disposal in Canada. Total tailings backfill as a method of waste disposal is technically feasible but cannot be regarded as more economic than surface disposal in all . It is important to remember that while surface disposal costs are rising, due to tighter legislation and more environmental pressure on governments; the costs of preparing and placing total tailings backfill is still falling as the technology improves."

"A review of the major renovation of the fifty-year old C-I headframe facilities at NERCQ&apos;s Con Mine, Yellowknife, N. W.T. is provided. The project was complete with only two 3-day shutdowns of the facility .Work consisted of four major phases: structural reinforcement of the adjoining mill building prior to dismantling; relocation of virtually all mine and mill utilities which transited the headframe collar en route from the adjacent powerhouse; dismantling of the entire headframe facility and portion of the mill building, including the removal of asbestos siding; and erection of a new headframe, idler rower, collarhouse and mill wall.This paper describes the work and methods used by NERCQ, J.S. Redpath Mining Consultants Limited, Acres International Limited, and others to bring the project to a successful completion. The history of the project is discussed from the planning phase through construction, including; design, procurement, and construction scheduling. The paper discusses the unique elements of the project, the problems encountered, and the methods used to achieve success.IntroductionThe Con Mine is a 800 tpd gold operation located in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. Originally owned and operated by Cominco Limited , the Con Mine was sold in December 1986 to NERCO Minerals Company, and officially renamed NERCO Con Mine, Ltd. The Con Mine has been in operation for over 50 years. The first gold brick ever produced in the Northwest Territories was poured at the Con Mine in 1938. The original C-1 shaft was sunk in 1937 to a depth of 235 ft. In 1941 the shaft was deepened to a depth of 950 ft, and the original timber head frame was replaced with a steel structure. Following the discovery of the Campbell Shear in 1946, the C-l shaft was again deepened to its present depth of 2443 ft. Over the years, mine production gradually moved deeper and further from the C-l shaft."

The SLon Vertical Ring and Pulsating High Gradient Magnetic Separator was developed to overcome multiple disadvantages associated with traditional horizontal type Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separators (WHIMS) which have been in service for many decades for recovering iron ore and other minerals. Proven successful, with hundreds of units now upgrading low-grade iron ores and maximizing recovery of fines throughout China, the technology is now being tested in the Western world. This paper will discuss the drawbacks of traditional WHIMS, explain the operation of the SLon, and illustrate its practical use in processing hematite ores.

"SUMMARYSamples of Aunor gold precipitates which varied widely in gold content were fluxed to produce a bisilicate slag with various oxidizers and combinations of oxidizers. On the basis of some preliminary tests a flux composition was chosen which appeared to show the most promise.The different components of this flux were then incorporated into a matrix for a 23 factorial design experiment to determine what were the most important variables and what changes should be made to the flux composition to optimize the resultant total bullion fineness.The results of the 23 factorial design experiment showed that the flux composition as calculated was very close to an optimum as only very minor changes were required to give bullion in excess of 995 fine.INTRODUCTIONEarly in 1969 the results from the Aunor Gold Mines refinery showed that wide variations existed both in precipitate grade and in total bullion fineness. An analysis of this data showed that as the precipitate grade increased, the gold bullion fineness also increased (see appendix 1). Therefore, to improve the refinery results test work was initiated to: 1) improve the precipitate grade and 2) to determine, with the help of statistics, a flux composition which would be able to handle wide variations in precipitate grade and give a total bullion fineness in excess of 950 fine."

"The Quemont property comprises 640 acres lying directly north of and adjoining the Noranda (Horne) mine. During 1926 to 1928, United Verde Extension Mining Corporation sank a shaft 235 feet and did 3,000 feet of development work on the 215-foot level. Between 1929 and 1930, Quemonr Mining Corporation deepened the shaft to 926 feet, and did further lateral work and drilling on the 500- and 900-foot levels. This work was confined to an area close to the south boundary and met with little encouragement.Following a period of idleness a magnetic survey was made in the winter of 1944, followed in the summer of the same year by some 6,000 feet of drilling. The first successful hole was drilled in February, 1945, from the ice of Osisko lake.To the time of writing, 131,000 feet of drilling, surface and underground,have indicated a large tonnage of gold-silver-copper-zinc ore, and although some knowledge of the geology and structure is emerging, it is too early to draw definite conclusions. The following brief description deals only with those structural features that are reasonably well indicated."
