"Current practice in advanced materials processing has involved the dispersion of a second-phase, commonly SiC, glass, or other non-metallic fibres/whiskers/particulates to enhance physical characteristics of the matrix. These matrices may be either ceramic or metallic but in either case it is important that the physical and chemical properties of each phase be compatible. The dispersed, finely divided second phase is often both expensive and foreign-produced and may exhibit chemical instability at elevated temperatures. Thus, it would appear that certain naturally-occurring industrial mineral fibres/whiskers/particulates might offer an attractive and low-cost alternative. Suitable candidates, such as wollastonite and sillimanite, are available in Canada and may be milled to produce particles whose shape is appropriate for this application. It is suggested that wollastonite, in particular, may be a useful modifying agent in metal matrix composites utilizing AI, Al-Si, Zn-Al or other light metals and alloys. In addition, the possible use of these minerals in ceramic matrix materials is also addressed, with reference to a preliminary thermodynamic analysis of the systems involved.IntroductionBackgroundA composite material may be thought of as consisting of a matrix component, the properties of which are improved by the addition of a second component or dispersed phase which forms a distinct three-dimensional interface with the matrix. This matrix is commonly either metallic or ceramic, which leads to the two most popular types of composites: metal-matrix composites (MMC); and ceramic-matrix composites (CMC).Such materials are by no means new. Early composites include fiberglass, mixtures of plaster and horsehair in wall plastering, as well as use of natural materials such as bamboo in fishing rods. Some of the newer applications include high strength, low-weight bicycle rims, as well as the more familiar role in aircraft and automobile engine components."

"Recently, a number of major mining companies seemed unable to find a president from within the industry, and were searching outside the industry. From this, one could conclude that managers within the industry are either not being prepared or are not preparing themselves for presidential responsibility. Opinions were sought from a number of senior executives, to attempt to define the skills a prospective president should acquire and what actions a company could take or that a prospective president could take to acquire these skills.This paper contains summaries of the opinions obtained, along with the author's comments. The paper also describes the actions some companies are taking and the actions that an aspiring president can take to prepare himself for corporate management.IntroductionA manager is promoted up the management ladder when the manager's superiors believe that he is capable of handling a more senior position. Normally, the manager acquires this credibility by outstanding performance in his current management post, whether it be in a junior management (supervisory) or in a vice-presidential capacity.In most instances, the skills required for promotion can be acquired in the current position or, at worst, the abilities exhibited in a candidate's current role will convince his superiors that the necessary expertise for the more senior position can be acquired on-the-job. This is particularly the case when the new skills are felt to be an extrapolation of the old skills.However, in the case of appointment to presidential rank, there appears to be a need for new expertise which often is not acquired in normal management progression or, at least, boards of directors of some mining companies seem to believe this to be the case. The objective of this paper is to attempt to define the new skills that should be acquired by a manager who aspires to be the president, and to describe what actions might be taken by him to acquire them."

"Abstract - Twenty-seven marine Mn and Fe deposits chosen for their diverse origins have been analyzed for five platinum-group elements (PGE). The PGE display their highest concentrations in hydrogenous Mn crusts and nodules, lesser concentrations in diagenetic nodules and two to three orders of magnitude lower concentrations in hydrothermal Mn and Fe crusts. This difference of behavior reflects the well-known fractionation of Mn and Fe from the other transition elements, rare earth elements (REE) and PGE in hydrothermal Mn and Fe crusts. Pt, Ru, Rh, and Ir show a close geochemical coherence in these deposits and are differentiated from Pd which shows a negative anomaly with respect to the other PGE in hydrogenous and diagenetic Mn deposits. Pd is less depleted than the other PGE and the Pd anomaly much less pronounced in the hydrothermal Mn and Fe crusts relative to the hydrogenous and diagenetic Mn deposits.Stability field diagrams show no evidence for the oxidation of Pt to the tetravalent state in seawater as suggested by some authors. Rather, Pt appears to be present in seawater as Pt(OH)2 0. Adsorption of Pt(OH)2 0 onto the surface of Mn and Fe oxyhydroxide minerals may explain the enrichment of Pt in marine Mn deposits. However, Pt metal is the thermodynamically stable solid phase of Pt under seawater conditions and reduction of Pt(OH)2 0 to Pt metal, particularly in the vicinity of the oxygen minimum zone, is possible, although the high Ce/La ratios of the Co-rich Mn crusts do not support this hypothesis. Pt, Ru, Rh, and Ir display their maximum concentrations in the Corich Mn crusts. This may reflect, among other things, the low growth rates of these deposits. The stability field diagram of Pd shows that Pd is undersaturated in seawater and occurs in seawater dominantly as PdCl4 2- and anionic mixed-hydroxide-chloride complexes. This would explain the anomalous position of Pd among the PGE with respect to its uptake into marine Mn deposits. A study of inter-element associations indicates that the incorporation of the PGE from meteoritic dust plays only a minor role in the uptake of these elements into marine Mn deposits. The PGE remain the most poorly studied group of elements in marine Mn deposits. The data presented here emphasize the need for the establishment of a more comprehensive database of the PGE in marine Mn deposits in order to understand more fully their uptake into marine Mn deposits and their pathways through the oceans."

"Nineteen streams in the copper and zinc flotation units of the concentrator of the Matagami division of Noranda Inc. have been sampled for particle size distributions chemical assays, and gold and silver contents in each particle size interval. The data are upgraded by the mass balance package BILMAT. These results, in conjunction with microprobe analyses, are used to quantify the silver losses in the copper clean¬ing flotation stages and to determine how overall silver and three silver-bearing minerals are recovered in the plant final products.RESUME Dix-neuf produits des circuits de flottation du cuivre et du zinc de la division Matagami de Noranda Inc. ont été échantillonnés pour leur distribution granulométrique, analyses chimiques et le contenu d'argent et d'or des fractions granulométriques. Only a small part of the silver (~-30%) is presently recovered in the copper concentrate. The objective of this study is to evaluate the metallurgical behaviour of silver, and secondarily of gold, in the flotation circuit for a possible increase of its recovery in the copper concentrate to improve its economic value. For that purpose it is worthwhile to study the minerals which bear silver and to determine the critical flotation stages where they are lost in the tails. The methodology proposed here is based on a coupling of a mineralogical study and a detailed mass balance calculation in the flotation circuit."

However, renewed interest in traditional materials also supports a good market for clay flower pots and flu e liners, and innovative processing studies are showing promise for possible new production of clay roofing tiles. This paper reviews the highlights of a comprehensive study of Ontario's clay products industries, completed in 1986. "Stillwater Mining Company (SMC), a partnership of Chevron Resources and Manville Corporation, produces a copper-nickel, platinum-palladium flotation concentrate at its Nye, Montana mine. The concentrate is then toll processed in Europe. Recognizing the economic advantage of treating the concentrates at the mine site and of retaining this strategic resource in the United States, the Company commissioned Tolltreck International Limited and International Process Research Corporation to conduct pilot scale smelting tests with a flowsheet that would maximize metal recoveries while satisfying the environmental requirements of operations at Stillwater.Primary smelting was conducted in a single phase, 50 k W, submerged-arc, electric furnace. Refining the product mattes to copper-nickel ""white-metal""; containing approximately 2% iron, was accomplished in a Tolltreck, IV-litre, top blown rotary converter. Over-all platinum and palladium recoveries were approximately 99%; copper and nickel recoveries averaged 94%. INTRODUCTION(l-4)Stillwater Mining Company (SMC) a partnership of Chevron Resources and Manville, operates a copper-nickel, platinum palladium mine and concentrator at Nye, Montana, located in the valley of the Stillwater River, approximately, 100 km southwest of Billings. It is North America's only primary producer of these precious metals. The Stillwater area was mined for chrome ore during World War U and the Korean War, but it was not until 1961 that attention was drawn to the similarities between the Stillwater Complex and the Bushveld Complex of South Africa with its deposits of platinum group metals.A concentrated search for platinum was begun by Manville Corporation in 1967. Its presence, together with palladium, in mineable quantities was confirmed in the period 1976-1978, and the first partnership to develop the deposits was formed by Manville and Chevron in 1979. Anaconda joined the group in 1983, and in 1985 its share was purchased by Lac Minerals. In 1988 the interests of Lac Minerals were purchased by Chevron and Manville.The decision to develop the mine and build a concentrator was made in 1986. Construction began in the fall of that year, and the first concentrate was produced six months later, in March 1987. Underground mining is done in a two-shift, five day- week operation. Since startup, the concentrator has operated on a 24 hour/day, 7 day/week schedule, treating an average of 635 tonnes of ore per day and producing approximately 10 tonnes of concentrate."

"Careful tax planning and proper attention to the regulations can result in an optimum deduction ""of the 25% federal resource allowance. Introduced in the Income Tax Act in1976, in part to compensate for the disallowance of provincial mining taxes and royalties. the 25% ""resource allowance"" is a permitted deduction in computing taxable income from mining and petroleum. However, the rules relating to the deduction are complex, and the importance of the deduction which can readily exceed 25% of net income- is frequently underestimated. It must be akin to rubbing salt in the wound, then, when an entrepreneur sells shares and the Court upholds Revenue Ca nada taxing the gain as ordinary income instead of capital gain. But, this is precisely what happened in the case of The Estate of Murray Watts, et al. v. The Queen.The issue that had to be decided by the Federal Court, Tri al Division, in this case was whether or not the profit from the sale of shares in Hearne Coppermine Exploration s Limited in 1968 was a capital gain, or income subject to tax.Hearne was incorporated in July, 1967. At that time, the three plaintiff s, together with seven other individuals, subscribed for 400,000 shares at 10 a share. The plaintiff subsequently subscribed for an additional 500,000 shares at $1.A pooling agreement was entered into by all ten shareholders regulating the disposition of any o f their shares; any sale required approval of seven of the ten initial sub scribers. It also provided for the sale of their shares 30 days after any public offering."

"The area of uranium deposition is situated within the Churchill Province on the western edge of the Wollaston Iithostructural domain where it underlies the eastern edge of the Helikian Athabasca Formation. The Collins Bay deposit is 6 miles north-northeast of the Rabbit Lake mine. Two principal zones of uranium mineralization are described.The ""A"" zone is a partly eroded, high-grade pod of metal oxide and arsenides sheathed by clay-like minerals. It trends north-northeast and lies under 25 to 40feet of water. Uranium mineralization is localized at or adjacent to the unconformity between the Athabasca Formation and the basement rocks. The basement comprises a granitoid Archean terrain overlain by paragneisses of the Aphebian Wollaston Group. ""A "" zone ore contains phyllosilicates, quartz, pitchblende, rammelsbergite, pararammelsbergite, carbonaceous material, galena, gersdorffite, niccolite, carbonate and a trace of sphalerite.The ""B "" zone lies 6,000 ft south of the ""A "", and subcrops under till cover. It is a partly eroded zone composed of metal oxide and arsenides which occur within variably altered Athabasca Formation. Minerals recognized are phyllosilicates, pitchblende, niccotite, gersdorffite, millerite, carbonaceous material, pyrrhotite, skutterudite and a trace of galena. The Athabasca Formation varies from 90 to 160ft thick. Granitoid gneisses of probable Archean age and paragneisses of the Wollaston Group underlie the deposit. An easterly dipping thrust fault transects its length.The deposit is typical of the ""unconformity-type"" uraniumnickel deposits of the Athabasca Basin. Observed features fit well with the ""diagenetic-hydrothermal"" model for such deposits, as envisioned by Hoeve and Sibbald (/978)."

"Abstract - North American Palladium Ltd. operates its Lac des Iles open pit palladium mine 85 km north of the city of Thunder Bay, Ontario. The Roby Zone deposit occurs within the mafic/ultramafic Lac des Iles Intrusive Complex (LDI-IC), which was created by multiple pulses of magma of varying composition within several closely spaced chambers. Chaotic lithological distribution, the presence of magmatic breccias, and the rarity of rhythmic layering suggest a dynamic intrusive environment with disruptive magma pulses. As of December 31, 2001, measured and indicated resources for the 950 m long by 815 m wide Roby Zone deposit totalled 159 Mt grading 1.55 g/t Pd, 0.17 g/t Pt, 0.12 g/t Au, 0.05% Cu, and 0.05% Ni at a palladium cut-off grade of 0.7 g/t. The Roby Zone contains an additional 73 Mt of inferred resources at similar grades.The Roby Zone is dominated by varitextured gabbro containing pipes and pods of breccia, and large blocks (~60 m across) of varying lithology. Mineralization at Lac des Iles occurs as: (1) a PGEand base metal-rich magmatic matrix of breccia (breccia ore); (2) mineralized dikes or sills (gabbronorite in North Roby ore); (3) lower-grade mineralization in varitextured units that are host to the distinctive breccia ore and envelope the North Roby ore; and (4) high-grade mineralization associated with strong silicate alteration exemplified by high-grade ore.The close spatial association of the mineralized breccias with both varitextured units and silicate alteration leads to an interpretation that the energetic magma that created breccia was charged with a dissolved fluid, and that this deuteric fluid exsolved at high temperatures to migrate through crystal mush, enhancing crystallization along its pathways, resulting in variable grain size. This transformation occurred at high temperature and produced sulfide-poor, varitextured gabbro-hosted mineralization exemplified by some of the mineralization in the North Roby Zone, and also found throughout the Roby Zone. The association of hydrous silicate alteration with mineralization can be explained by continuing fluid migration during cooling and continued metal transport. De plus, la Roby Zone contient 73 millions de tonnes de ressources inférées à une teneur similaire.La Roby Zone est principalement encaissée dans un gabbro de texture hétérogène (varitextured) caractérisé par des cheminées et des lentilles de brèches et des énormes blocs (environ 60 m de diamètre) de plusieurs lithologies. Au Lac des Iles, la minéralisation en EGP et en métaux de base se retrouve dans la matrice magmatique de brèches (breccia ore), dans des dykes ou des sills minéralisés (gabbronorite dans la zone North Roby ore), comme minerai de basse teneur encaissant le minerai de brèche (breccia ore) et enveloppant la zone North Roby. "In the present work, the oxidation of manganous and chloride ions on a mixed metal oxide (MMO) anode from a 40 ºC electrolyte containing 160 g/L sulfuric acid (H2SO4) with various concentrations of Mn2+ and Cl- was studied using cyclic voltammetry. These results indicated that Mn2+ concentration does not affect Cl2 evolution on a non-MnO2 coated MMO anode. However once MnO2 deposits on the MMO anode, Cl2 evolution is inhibited. The effects of manganous concentration and chloride concentration on the amount of MnO2 deposited in one hour were also evaluated. Cl- concentration did not affect the amount of MnO2 generated. Increasing Mn2+ concentration resulted in an increase in the amount of MnO2 deposited.INTRODUCTIONThe electrolytic recovery of zinc (Zn) is a well-known process and is estimated to produce approximately nine million tons of Zn per year worldwide (Recendiz, Nava, Lartundo-Rojas, Almaguer, & Gonzaleza, 2009). The Zn produced by this process is of high purity and has a wide range of applications, such as galvanizing (car body parts, pipes, metal wires, etc.), sacrificial anodes in offshore industries, casting alloys, alloying of brass, primary and secondary battery industries, etc.The electrochemical production of Zn employs aluminum cathodes and lead-silver anodes (Pb- Ag) (Recendiz et al., 2009). The Zn containing mineral (ZnS) is usually associated with other elements such as Mn, Mg, Ca, Cd, Cu, Cl, Fe, F, Co, Ni, Al, As, Sb, Si, Sn, Ge, Hg etc. (Nijjer, 2000). After processing of ZnS concentrates, the electrolyte obtained still contains residual metallic and non-metal impurities. Some of these impurities can impact the corrosion rate of Pb-Ag anodes."

"In previous publications by the author, significant advances and generalizations of the theory of sampling of broken ores, prompted and confirmed by experimental results, have been presented. This paper shows how to implement these theoretical results in practice. The models to be used are reviewed, with a description of the various sampling parameters involved. Then the methodology for the experimental assessment of those parameters, including segregation factors, is described in simple and practical terms, along with the use of handy sampling protocol charts. Finally, the particularly important case of processing data from a sample-tree experiment is detailed, and examples of applications covering all situations and types of experiments are provided.IntroductionThe reliability of a sample of crushed material , i.e. the expected (average) deviation between its true grade and the true grade of the lot it comes from, mostly depends upon six factors:• the size (mass) of the sample (and to a minor extent, for small lots, the size of the lot);• the size of the rock particles (degree of comminution)• the nature of the mineralization at microscopic scale (i.e., within even the smallest particles);• the geological nature of the mineralization and mineral of interest;• the grade of the lot in the mineral of interest; and• in some cases, the state of segregation of the lot.In practice, one should first disregard segregation problems, and assess sample variability in the segregation-free case. Once the numerical parameters governing this variability have been assessed, then segregation factors can be assessed in turn. In the case of laboratory standard sample preparation procedures, segregation can usually be disregarded altogether."

"Funding has been made available through the National Energy Program to build a mobile fine coal treatment plant. The plant is intended f or field application and also to upgrade the existing pilot plant facilities.Western Canadian coals with high proportions of fines (due 10 their friability) cause high losses of fine coal to the reject and in turn reduce the over-all recovery of saleable coal. Eastern Canadian coals with high amounts of sulphur of ten require crushing to fin e sizes to liberate pyrite and therefore need effective and efficient separation of these fine sulphur particles. The difficulties involved in solving these problems are two-fold. One is the reluctance to experiment in an operating wash plant and the other is that laboratory scale testing often cannot be extrapolated to the plant environment. The mobile fine cleaning plant with its ability to operate at existing coal preparation plants across Canada and with its flexibility in implementing flowsheet option s and close monitoring of fine coal circuit variables, is ideally suited to solve these fine coal cleaning problems. The mobile plant objectives are to design and optimize flowsheets, evaluate and improve fine cleaning circuit operations and 10 lest new process monitoring and control equipment.The schedule for construction and the required resources will be outlined along with flowsheet options and the general R&D philosophy of the mobile plant.IntroductionIn relation to coal preparation technology, Canadian coal s can be grouped as Eastern coal, Rocky Mountain metallurgical coal and Foothills high volatile bituminous coal. The eastern coals have high sulphur contents and in some cases require crushing or even grinding to liberate the fine pyrite . Rocky Mountain metallurgical coals often occur in highly sheared seams which have been subjected to rapid coalification. The high friability of these coals means that degradation during mining, handling and processing is extensive and results in large amounts of fine s ranging between 20 and 60% by mass of the wash plant feed. The widely varying geo logical structure and exposure to the elements results in partially oxidized coals which perform inconsistently in the traditional method of fine cleaning by flotation . Foothills high volatile bituminous coals for thermal use are frequently interbedded with soft shales and bentonitic clays. These clays disintegrate during washing and swell, producing large volumes of tailings. The presence of clays in plant circuits, particularly fine circuits, tends to increase the viscosity and may cause deterioration of the fines density separation and increase magnetite losses. In view of the fact that fine coal cleaning is the most difficult aspect of coal preparation , a research program is being established to study the factors involved and to offer some solutions.A recent performance evaluation of Canadian washeries showed that yield losses in the minus 2 mm coal circuits were approximately ten times those occurring in the coarse coal circuits(1). Because 2 mm x 0 coal represents 30 to 70 per cent of the raw coal, these losses can be considerable . The operating and capital costs of beneficiating minus 6 mm coal are about four to five times higher than for plus 6 mm coal. In the case o f minus 2 mm coal the costs are even higher. The economic importance of the fine coal cleaning cannot be over emphasized and as a result, the CANMET R&D program is geared for fine coal beneficiation."

"A multielement (Au, Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, c-, Ag, As, Hg, Co, and S) geochemical rock sampling survey was carried out in 1977 in the Munro Township area of Ontario to assess the application of rock geochemistry for gold exploration in the region. Detailed sampling with analysis for gold and arsenic was done in 1986 in the immediate vicinity of the Croesus Mine.Samples of quartz veins and rock formations were taken in regional traverses and in more detail near old showings, prospect pits, and trenches. Quartz, graywacke, carbonate rock, and rhyolite contain the highest concentrations of gold for samples taken away from the old workings. Ultramafic rocks and gabbro have uniformly low gold. Basalt samples have slightly higher geometric means, but individual samples contain high gold concentrations. Multielement highs are mostly in mineralized quartz samples. Gold distribution is independent of other elements in most other rock types. Samples near old showings possess elevated concentrations of gold indicating that prospecting for individual mineral deposits by bedrock sampling is feasible. Concentrations of gold greater than 100 ppb are mostly within 30 m of old workings. Those samples which contain greater than 1000 ppb Au were obtained from quartz veins, basalt, graywacke, and rhyolite.High concentrations of gold were not notably concentrated near the Contact Fault although some anomalous samples came from near and on both sides of the fault. Arsenic concentrations are elevated near the Contact Fault. Detailed sampling near the Croesus Mine suggests that gold was introduced with faulting, alteration and quartz veining. Gold and arsenic have been added to the wallrock in the vicinity of the main veins."

"Spring-Back/Forward in sheet metals is defined as recovery of elastic strain upon unloading in a deformed sheet specimen. Since this phenomenon can cause alternation in the dimensions of a part, leading to irrecoverable compensations, the operative parameters need to be investigated, thoroughly. To assess spring-forward and effective bending parameters, V-shaped bending dies are the most commonly used experimental approach. In the present research, the effect of bending angle and punch tip radius on the spring-forward behavior of an Al-Mg-Si alloy sheet specimen is studied. To this end, a V-shaped die with four bending angles (i.e. 30°, 45°, 60°, and 90°) was designed and fabricated. Specimens with thickness of 2 mm were cut with dimensions of 50 mm×10 mm. Results show that by increasing the bending angle, the spring-forward angle decreases. In addition, smaller punch tip radiuses lead to further spring-forward. The effect of these parameters on the amount of spring-forward angle, strain distribution and homogeneity along sheet thickness was assessed using finite element analysis (FEA). Simulation results show that as the bending angle increases, the strain is developed more homogenously. Finally, micro-hardness test was used to study the effect of strain hardening caused by bending operation on strength evolution. Results show higher hardness trends for the zones in which the maximum plastic strain occurs.INTRODUCTIONPrecise production plays a significant role in the durability of a part. When it comes to sheet metal forming, this issue should be taken into account as an important factor. In order to predict the alternations, bending dies with special geometric parameters (i.e. V-shaped, U-shaped and L-shaped dies) are commonly used (Wagoner, Lim, & Lee, 2013)."

Increasingly sophisticated rock mechanic tools are becoming more and more available for today?s ground control specialist. However many problems are still beyond our ability to explicitly calculate or measure. There is often a gap between the ?art? and the ?science? of rock mechanics. This paper focuses more on the ?art?, giving relatively simple examples of underground observations and micro-seismic records to help explain ground control issues. Ground support techniques such as in cycle shotcrete with high pressure water scaling, mesh and bolting, pumpable resin bolts/cablebolting, and yielding bolts with load spreading straps are discussed. The use of primary/secondary type blasthole sequences in moderate to high stress situations is also discussed with several examples of the micro-seismic response to the stoping. Relatively erratic geology with high material strength contrasts is currently being mined with blasthole methods at Nickel Rim South. Although the mine is still in its? ?early? days, over 1 million tonnes has been extracted and some empirical experience is highlighted with potential longer term issues also being discussed.

"Falconbridge Mine has a history of significant microseismic activity dating back to 1955. Since mid-1981, a microseismic monitoring system has been operating in the area around the No .9 Shaft hoist room located 25 m from the are zone at a depth of 1200m. Several mine wide faults dissect this area and have been shown to be microseismic-active due to mining. The microseismic monitor has been interfaced with a small dedicated personal computer and a communications device to perform routine data evaluation and to produce graphical output. The programs are described and selected result s from the monitoring program are presented.IntroductionFalconbridge Mine is located on the southeast rim of the Sudbury Basin. The nickel-copper sulphide ore zone is essentially a tabular orebody striking approximately east-west and dipping at 80 degrees north near surface and rolling to 75 degrees to 80 degree s south by the 1000 level. (Mine level number s represent the approximate depth in feet below ground surface .) This dip is maintained down to the 6000 level. The north wall is comprised of jointed norite and a faulted contact up to 1 m thick exists between the ore zone and the norite. The south wall rock is a greenstone with highly siliceous lenses and often has a faulted contact with the ore zone. No less than five mine wide faults exist, as shown in Fig. I.Mining ha s been carried out from virtually the bedrock contact to depths of 1830 m although the majority of current activity is between 900 and 1500 m below surface. A winze provides access below the 4025 level and the cage hoist room is located on the 3850 level in the north wall 25 m from the contact. Because of concern for the stability of this hoist room, there has been no mining activity within 60 m of the hoist room and by 1980 this block of ore was one of the major blocks of high-grade ore remaining in the mine . Mining of this block was originally scheduled for very late in the decade.Prior to a six-month shutdown in 1982, this mine produced approximately 450,000 tonnes of ore annually, mainly by cut and- fill techniques. Following the shutdown, annual production has been reduced to approximately 200,000 tonnes and production is now mainly by undercut and fill techniques .Mining-induced seismicity has occurred at Falconbridge Mine since at least 1955 and reviews of the microseismic problems for the periods from 1965 - 1970 and from 1971 to 1979 were made by Singh (1971) and Vongpaisal et al. (1980), respectively. The need for instrumentation was addressed by these authors. Following several large events during the spring of 1980, a decision was made to investigate existing microseismic monitors and to apply micro seismic monitoring techniques in Falconbridge Mine. Application of microseismic monitoring to Falconbridge Mine was to concentrate on the No . 9 Shaft hoist room area of the mine, particularly around the 4025 level where a large mechanized cut-and- fill stope was approaching this level. By mid - 1981, the microseismic monitor was fully installed and with in a year , a short-period seismograph and a personal computer had been added to the system."

"Abstract - Volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits, an important base-metal deposit type in China, occur widely in submarine volcanic districts of variable magmatic affinities. These VMS deposits range in age from Archean to Mesozoic, but most are in Proterozoic and Paleozoic sequences. More than 60% of VMS deposits formed in the Paleozoic, the most important metallogenic eon. Three important Paleozoic VMS-metallogenic provinces include Northern Qilian, Sanjiang and Altai provinces. The Proterozoic constitutes the next important era, but with no VMS deposits in the middle Proterozoic. VMS deposits associated with the Proterozoic volcanic rocks occur around the Yangtze Platform and in the western Kunlun-Qinling. The Triassic is third in importance, with VMS deposits concentrated in the Sanjiang Tethys. The Archean has only one VMS deposit, on the northern margin of the Sino-Korea Platform.Five distinct compositional classes of Chinese VMS deposits have been distinguished: Cu, Cu- Zn (or Zn-Cu), Cu-Fe, Zn-Pb-Cu, and Pb-Zn (-Cu). The Cu, Cu-Co, and Cu-Zn types of deposits occur sporadically from the Archean to Paleozoic, and are closely associated with mafic and ultramafic volcanic sequences. The Zn-Pb-Cu and some Cu-Zn type deposits are restricted to the Paleozoic and Triassic, and are hosted by calc-alkaline felsic rocks in bimodal basalt-rhyolite sequences, whereas Cu-Fe and Pb-Zn type (except for the Laochang deposit) deposits are restricted to the Proterozoic and occur in calc-alkaline volcanic sequences. As large quantities of marine mafic volcanic rocks were deposited in western China, Cu and Cu-Zn deposits are major types of Chinese VMS deposits.Chinese VMS deposits formed in a wide range of paleo-tectonic settings and depositional environments, such as island-arcs, rifts, aulacogens, and ocean ridge hot spots. Among these, the rift and back-arc environments are the most important, containing about 60% of Chinese VMS deposits. Aulacogens are a subordinate environment where most of the Proterozoic VMS deposits formed. The oceanic ridge and hot-spot systems are common in the tectono-magmatic domains in China, but contain only a few small Cu and Cu-Zn type VMS deposits.The Chinese VMS deposits have usually been influenced by both deformation and metamorphism to various degrees, resulting in changes in the shape and metal distribution. Seven representative deposit styles have been recognized: sheets, sheet plus strata-bound stringer, cyclically zoned deposits, mounds, mound-like deposits, strata-bound stringer-disseminated, and stockwork-disseminated deposits. The formation of these various styles of deposits is controlled by several key factors, such as lithology and permeability of the host rocks, focused or unfocused discharge, temperature and chemical composition (e.g., salinity) of hydrothermal fluids, as well as depth of seawater."
