The Captain North Extension deposit consists of five sulfide lenses hosted in cherty and chloritic metasediment that is bounded by quartz-eye rhyolite and laminated rhyolite. Lens 2 consists of sphalerite and galena with silver-rich tetrahedrite in chert. Lens 3 contains massive pyrite, with chalcopyrite and minor gold, gradational to minor pyrite in a chloritic metasediment. The other lenses are unexplored. The sulfides occur as beds, fracture infills, and disseminated grains. Reserves are estimated at 207 555 tonnes grading 7.380/0 Zn, 2.76% Pb, and 91.81 g/t Ag. The deposit is isoclinally folded, dips steeply west, plunges 50 degrees south, and is faulted out to the north, where drag folding has reversed the plunge. Minor cross-faults contain talc and sericite. High sphalerite but low pyrite abundances result in poor responses to standard electromagnetic techniques. Lens 3, which contains more pyrite than Lens 2, responds better to induced polarization and allows detection. Geochemical anomalies are found in a nearby swamp and stream, but an impervious till cover inhibits the development of soil anomalies.

"J. S. Redpath Limited, an underground contractor with a worldwide presence, has implemented innovative techniques in various projects in Canada to shorten the development cycle. Conventional methods currently used for installing primary ground support are compared with the Australian technique of bolting and meshing with jumbos equipped with twin telescopic booms, in-cycle shotcreting, and the use of two jumbos and two scissor bolters set up side by side in wide headings. Recommendations and lessons learned are presented with the aim of providing realistic expectations with regard to development advance rates in a mining environment.RÉSUMÉ J. S. Redpath Limitée, un entrepreneur minier souterrain d’envergure mondiale, a complété plusieurs projets au Canada où des techniques novatrices ont été mises en oeuvre pour raccourcir le cycle de développement. Cet article présente une comparaison entre les méthodes conventionnelles fréquemment utilisées pour le support de terrain, la technique australienne de boulonnage et d’installation de grillage au moyen de jumbos équipés de flèches télescopiques doubles, du béton projeté appliqué durant le cycle de développement et de l’utilisation de deux jumbos et deux boulonneuses côtes-à-côtes dans des galeries de grandes dimensions. Les recommandations et les leçons apprises sont présentées dans le but de fournir au lecteur des attentes réalistes quant aux taux d’avancement du développement dans un environnement minier."

"Nkomati Nickel Mine in South Africa processes one of the world’s hardest ores in a 375k TPM autogenous grinding circuit. The plant employs an unconventional processing circuit, comprising a primary autogenous mill (AG or FAG) and pebble crushing circuit followed by a secondary hybrid pebble/ball mill and classification cyclone cluster.Advanced Process Control (APC) or Expert Control is now generally accepted as an advantage in most modern high capacity concentrator grinding circuits. This paper reviews the installation of model predictive control at Nkomati and examines the results and benefits of installation in an autogenous mill during plant ramp-up. The paper also demonstrates how predefining process control objectives together with good plant and supplier cooperation can achieve a robust and reliable APC implementation on a very short site program.The results conclusively demonstrate operational and economic benefits during circuit operation with the advanced process control system ON. Production performance and circuit stability were significantly better than during manual control."

"More than 20 years ago, Paques B.V. introduced innovative biotechnologies to recover metals and to remove sulfate from aqueous streams. These technologies find their origin in the exploration of microorganisms involved in the global sulfur cycle. Currently, several sulfur cycle biotechnologies are applied successfully at full-scale. The sulfur cycle is closely linked with the iron cycle, and also the latter offers opportunities for application of innovative biotechnology for the mining industry. Microorganisms of the natural iron cycle carry out reactions that are not feasible by chemical methods such as ferrous iron oxidation with oxygen at pH below 4. Iron oxidation with oxygen can be conducted using microorganisms living at pH between 0.5 and 7 and at temperatures between 0 and 95ºC. Remarkably these microorganisms can also carry out arsenite oxidation at similar acidic conditions and high temperatures. Making use of the extreme features of these microorganisms, Paques and Wageningen University have developed a biological process to precipitate arsenic as scorodite. This biological formation of scorodite is a novel combination of biological oxidation and biocrystallization. Depending on the level of saturation, biological oxidation rates and operational conditions, we could control the formation of the iron precipitates such as jarosite and scorodite. Currently new microorganisms have been harvested from hot springs and rock acid mine drainage to foster the growth of specialized microbial communities with potential high iron and arsenic oxidation capacities and higher resistance to other metals. In our paper we address the ongoing research and development of the bioscorodite process.THE USE OF IRON TO REMOVE ARSENIC In 2015 several environmental disasters related to the release of mine wastewater and tailings occurred. On August 5th, a waste water spill occurred from the Gold King Mine near Silverton, Colorado. A dam holding the tailing pond was damaged and spilled three million US gallons (11 ML) of mine wastewater and tailings, including elements such as cadmium, lead and arsenic, into Cement Creek, a tributary of the Animas River in Colorado. “At their peak, arsenic levels were 300 times the normal level and lead was 3,500 times the normal level” (The Guardian, 2015). In early November, another collapse of a mining dam in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais spilled between ten and sixteen thousand US gallons of water and sediment after a dam failed from an iron ore mine. Arsenic and mercury polluted the Doce River, arsenic levels were found more than ten times above the legal limit in some places of the river (The Guardian, 2015). Waste production is inevitable during Mining. However, a preventive waste management strategy could have minimised waste production, maximised waste reuse and classified waste by their hazardous degree."

This paper describes the design, the first three years of operation and optimization of a large, single stage SAG mill at Minera Yanacocha’s Gold Mill facility located in northern Peru. The Gold Mill was commissioned in March 2008 with a 32’ x 32’ EGL, 16.5MW single stage SAG mill, to process 5 million tonnes per annum high grade oxide Au/Ag ore. Operational control, feed size distribution, grinding media, mill liner, grate and pulp lifter optimisation have allowed the mill to operate 15-30% above design throughput rates, but with a product P80 coarser than design. As part of the optimization, full grinding circuit surveys were conducted. Historical operating data and survey data were analyzed and used to evaluate possible circuit changes and determine alternative operating strategies. A number of changes were implemented which allowed the SAG mill to operate similarly to a large ball mill and achieve finer mill product that was closer to design. This paper summarizes life to date data analysis and improvements made by Minera Yanacocha as well as the grinding circuit optimisation study conducted by Metso Process Technology and Innovation.

"Abstract - In 1989-1990, the SeaMARC II side-looking sonar (11 to 12 kHz) and swath bathymetric system imaged more than 80 000 km2 of the seafloor in the Norwegian-Greenland Sea and southern Arctic Ocean. One of our main goals was to investigate the highly oblique (115°) junction between the Mohns and Knipovich ridges, and to determine, using new morphotectonic data, whether or not this junction is stable or in a state of readjustment. These findings are presented in this paper.Along the northern Mohns Ridge, we observed a highly segmented rift valley undisturbed by transform faults. In contrast to the elevated Reykjanes Ridge, the Mohns Ridge is dominated by deep en echelon fault-bounded troughs, which are bordered by high rift valley volcanoes. These segment boundaries are interpreted to be sites of recent to present volcanic activity, based on their high acoustic reflectivity. The northwestern flank of the Mohns Ridge is marked by shallow quasi-linear ridges parallel to the present orientation of the Mohns Ridge. The orientation and geographic position of these ridges suggest that they were formed at the Mohns Ridge. Only in the northernmost cases are some of these off-axial ridges non-linear. The degree of the non-linearities increases slightly with proximity to the Mohns-Knipovich bend. In addition, because no transform fault was detected between the Mohns and Knipovich ridges, we conclude that the Knipovich Ridge must be obliquely spreading to the NW-SE."

Productivity higher, or at least equal to that offered by man-operated equipment and systems; ? Lower production cost. Therefore, high effectiveness of the autonomous equipment is crucial to succeed.

Arsenic (As), bismuth (Bi) and antimony (Sb) are known to affect the quality of copper deposits in copper electrowinning operations. The codeposition of As was previously believed to occur only at current densities far exceeding the range of typical current densities for copper electrowinning. In this study, we investigate the copper electrodeposition on different pretreated stainless steel (SS) substrates from bleed electrolyte in galvanostatic mode at –45 mA/cm². Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrographs illustrate that during the initial phases of copper nucleation and growth, the current density was locally increased due to the pretreatments. It was reasoned that the codepostion of As could possibly occur in normal electrowinning conditions, but the risk can be substantially reduced by good SS substrate handling and maintenance practices. INTRODUCTION The presence of As, Bi and Sb is known to have a deleterious effect on the copper cathode quality in copper electrowinnings (Hiskey & Maeda, 2003; Hoffmann, 2004; Xiao, Cao, Shen, & Volinsky, 2012; Xiao, Cao, Mao, Shen, & Ren, 2014; Jafari et al., 2017). They are known to influence both the chemical and physical quality of the copper as they can contaminate the copper (Jafari et al., 2017) and affect the copper deposit structure (Hiskey & Maeda, 2003; Kim, Kim, & Chung, 2009), which contributes to a degraded market value of the copper (Tuddenham, 1984). The incorporation mechanisms of these impurities are believed to occur mainly through slime inclusion (F. Xiao et al, 2012) and electrolyte inclusion (Hiskey & Maeda, 2003). Other studies suggested that codeposition of these impurities is possible by their standard reduction potential being close to the one of copper (Xiao et al, 2014). Hiskey and Maeda (2003) investigated the copper electrodeposition on a copper electrode substrate in Cu electrolytes with a Cu, H2SO4, As, Bi, Sb composition representative for commercial copper tankhouses. The combination of voltammographic techniques and Auger electron spectroscopy showed that As was the first impurity to be electrodeposited from this electrolyte, yet at potentials where the limiting current density of the copper electrodeposition reaction is exceeded. The copper tankhouses usually operate at a current density ratio of 0.3 to the limiting current density in order to achieve tolerable copper quality deposits. The codeposition of As could be considered impossible in this current density condition. However, it is known that during the initial phases of electrodeposition on foreign substrates, a substantial part of the reaction proceeds by growth of individual nuclei where the current density is locally high and diffusion limited (Radisic, Ross, & Searson, 2006). Furthermore, it was observed that copper nucleation on TiO substrates occurred preferentially in the scratched oxide free areas which could serve as parts with high localized current densities (Chang, Choe, & Lee, 2005).

A new era in pressure hydrometallurgy is marked when the roasting - leaching - electrowinning process in the zinc industry was replaced by direct pressure leaching of zinc concentrate. Since then, the technology has received recognition as the technology of the future. Large autoclaves of unprecedented size have been manufactured and installed in a number of metallurgical plants for recovering copper and nickel from their concentrates or liberating gold from its refractory ores. An attempt to recover alumina from clay using pressure technology is underway. Autoclaves lined with acid resisting bricks or with titanium clad may weigh as much as 800 tonnes were transported successfully from the manufacturing workshop to the mine site over long distances.

"Abstract- In the southern Gaspé Appalachians, gold mineralization is spatially associated with the Acadian dextral strike-slip Grand Pabos-Restigouche fault system. Two different structurally-controlled gold prospects, the Lac Arsenault and the Saint-André-de-Ristigouche, are described to unravel the genesis of gold mineralization in this part of the Canadian Appalachians.At the Lac Arsenault gold prospect, gold mineralization consists of Au-As-Pb-Zn-Cu-(Ag) polymetallic fault-filled quartz veins with laminated textures emplaced in brittle-ductile sinistral X shear fractures. Mineralized veins are hosted by Middle Ordovician graywacke of the Arsenault Formation, belonging to the Dunnage Zone, the Early Paleozoic oceanic domain of the Appalachians. Terrigeneous rocks of the Arsenault are regionally metamorphosed at the lower greenshist facies and the mineralized veins are included in a zone of Fe-carbonate alteration.The Sb-Au-As mineralization of the Saint-André-de-Ristigouche gold prospect, in the southwestern Gaspé area, comprises extension veins in the extension direction emplaced in brittle conditions. Mineralized veins are hosted by calcilutite and laminated silty and argillaceous limestone of the Early Silurian part of the White Head Formation, which belongs to the Gaspé Belt, the Middle Paleozoic successor basin in the Gaspé Appalachians. Metamorphic grade of the White Head Formation in the southwestern Gaspé area is very low, but the gold mineralization is included in a zone of hydrothermal propylitic alteration which includes two Cu-skarn mineral occurrences. The Lac Arsenault gold prospect has many characteristics of "greenstone-hosted quartz-carbonate vein" deposits whereas the southwestern Gaspé area, which includes the Saint-André-de- Ristigouche gold prospect, shows affinities with the geological setting of sediment-hosted gold deposits (Carlin-like deposits). The two gold prospects are controlled by the Grand Pabos- Restigouche fault system but they were not emplaced at the same level in the crust. Acadian strikeslip fauting played a major role in their respective genesis in providing channelways for ore-bearing fluids. The recognition of the analogy of the geological setting of the southwestern Gaspé area with that of Carlin-like mineralization gives new ideas for exploration in the area and elsewhere in the Appalachians.Résumé - Dans le sud des Appalaches de la Gaspésie, on trouve des minéralisations aurifères spatialement associées au système de failles de coulissage dextre acadien de Grand Pabos-Restigouche. Deux indices très différents, Lac Arsenault et Saint-André-de-Ristigouche, sont décrits pour évaluer la genèse des minéralisations aurifères à contrôle structural de cette partie des Appalaches canadiennes. Au Lac Arsenault, la minéralisation aurifère comprend des veines polymétalliques à Au-As-Pb- Zn-Cu-(Ag) en remplissage de failles. Ces veines à texture laminaire se retrouvent dans des zones de cisaillement fragiles-ductiles senestres de type X. Les veines minéralisées sont encaissées dans les grauwackes d’âge Ordovicien moyen de la Formation d’Arsenault appartenant à la zone de Dunnage, le domaine océanique du Paléozoïque précoce des Appalaches canadiennes. Les roches terrigènes de l’Arsenault sont métamorphisées régionalement au faciès inférieur des schistes verts et les veines aurifères sont dans de larges zones d’altération dolomitique (Fe-carbonate).Dans le sud-ouest de la Gaspésie, la minéralisation à Sb-Au-As de Saint-André-de-Ristigouche est dans des veines d’extension comprises dans la direction d’extension et mises en place dans des conditions de déformation fragile. Les veines minéralisées sont encaissées dans les calcaires argileux et les calcilutites de la partie silurienne de la Formation de White Head qui appartient à la ceinture de Gaspé, le bassin successeur du Paléozoïque moyen des Appalaches de la Gaspésie. "Cyanide is a well proven, effective lixiviant that has been utilised for centuries in gold extraction processes. Despite being used in close to 90% of gold processing plants, cyanide leaching is still being scrutinised due to its toxic nature. With governments tightening the regulations on cyanide management, and recently erected sites situated closer to community and environment, leach waste and tailings treatment has become increasingly important. Gekko Systems has worked with engineering companies and directly with gold producers to provide technical services and supply complete modular cyanide destruction (detox) systems for plants leaching both run-of-mine ore and high sulphide gravity and flotation concentrates. Although similar in principle, the different materials presented unique challenges in design and implementation. Similar to designing any section of a processing plant, the development of the cyanide destruction plant design began with laboratory test work to simulate the full scale operation. This paper focusses on the laboratory test work and how other critical factors such as geographical location, logistics, and local community play a role in the process design and construction. Two design and supply cases are discussed in this paper; one treating intensive cyanidation concentrate leach tails and one treating whole ore CIL tails. Although these plants both use the SO2/O2 process, each presented different challenges in laboratory testing and plant design, resulting in variations in final implementation including reagent choice, oxygen supply, and process control.INTRODUCTIONSince 1887, cyanide has played a large part in the beneficiation of gold from gold bearing ores. Cyanide is used to solubilise gold into solution, and is typically added in excess to maintain the leaching process. Some or all the excess cyanide can often be recovered and reused in the process however chemical destruction of cyanide is often necessary to manage cyanide levels in the tailings storage facility (TSF)."

Since 2008 rapid advances have been made in technologies for the sensing and sorting of ores, particularly copper, and copper-related ores. Advances include significant increases in the sensitivity and throughput, specifically in the area of bulk sorting. Such advances were not possible without contemporaneous advances in the understanding of copper orebodies, in particular the understanding and quantification of the heterogeneity required within an orebody to support an effective sort, regardless of the technology deployed to do this. This paper covers fundamental knowledge in the characterization of orebodies and their ores for sorting; relationships between measures of heterogeneity and sorting response; the design of bulk sorting systems that can exploit this heterogeneity to add value to copper operations; and, a quantification of the value that can be generated from bulk sorting at a case study mine. INTRODUCTION Society currently puts increasing pressure on industries to move towards cleaner and more efficient means of production, and the mining industry is no exception. Mining additionally faces other factors increasing the pressure to be more efficient: high-grade and easily accessible reserves have become largely depleted, therefore the mined grade at operations across most commodities, including and in particular copper, is decreasing. Additionally, the grade of new discoveries in the sector continues to decrease (Schodde, 2011). Factor in the high capital cost of processing facilities and the low levels of efficiency of current grinding circuits, and the situation for such mines becomes dire. Sorting, by maximizing the amount of ore extracted while simultaneously reducing the waste content in ore delivered to downstream processes (whether simply transport and crushing, or more sophisticated circuits such as grinding and flotation or leaching) has long been of interest to mining operations and projects struggling with low margins (Bamber, 2012). However, until recently sorting technologies that are both cost effective and effective at such high throughputs have not been commercially available.

"SOMMAIREUne méthodologie de prévision des coûuts de forage en galeries est proposée. Cette méthodologie a été élaborée pour les perforatrices pneumatiques manuelles. Elle est composée de quatre modèles: (1) un modèle de pénétration conduisant à la prévision du temps de forage; (2) un modèle d'estimation de la durée de vie des fournitures; (3) un modèle d'estimation de fa quantité d'énergie consommée; et (4) un modèle de calcul de couts. Elle fait intervenir la résistance en compression uniaxiale de la roche du massif foré, le diamètre des trous, Ie type de perforatrice utilise, fa pression d'air d'opération, la longueur des fleurets, les temps morts associes au forage ainsi que le rendement des compresseurs, des perforatrices et du réseau de distribution de l’air comprime. L 'application de la méthodologie est illustrée à l’'aide d'un exemple, suivi d'une courte analyse de sensibilité et d'une brève discussion. ABSTRACTA drilling cost estimation methodology for underground headings is described. This methodology has been developed for percussive hand-held drills. It comprises four models: (1) a drillability model used for the prediction of the drilling period; (2) a model for the prediction of bit and rod lives; (3) an energy model; and (4) a cost model. It makes use of the uniaxial compressive strength ofthe rock drilled, hole diameter, drill type used, operating air pressure, drilling rod length, dead times that may occur during the drilling operation as well as compressor, air distribution network and drilling machine efficiencies. The application of the methodology is illustrated with an example, followed by a short sensitivity analysis and brief discussion."

ABSTRACT Testing the effects of bubble size (Db) in a Mo cleaning ?otation column at Highland Valley Copper mine indicated that increasing the proportion of small (< 1 mm) bubbles signi?cantly improved column metallurgical response, compared to typical operation. The results were a three- to four-fold Mo recovery increase and a 1 to 2% Mo (absolute) concentrate grade increase. The improvedcolumn operation produced a 4% Mo plant recovery increase. This study also showed that modelling the ?otation rate constant (k) as an inverse square function of Db was more accurate than considering k to be inversely proportional to Db.

"Abstract -The application of geophysical technology to resource delineation aims to improve the quality of resource/reserve estimates by integrating high-resolution survey methods, geophysical modeling and inversion with three-dimensional representations of geological and mineral deposit data. The use of geophysics can cost-effectively improve a geological interpretation based only on geological and sampling data. Success depends upon the ability to use geological visualization and modeling software, first to develop a three-dimensional geological model and then to modify it interactively by integrating geophysical data with the geological and sampling data.The high resolution required for mineral delineation geophysics results in a focus on borehole seismic and high-frequency electromagnetic methods. Borehole wireline logging is used to develop an understanding of the relationship between physical properties and geological description. Data from core samples and borehole wireline logs allow the construction of a three-dimensional physical property distribution, consistent with the existing geological interpretation. The three-dimensional physical property distribution is used for both geophysical forward modeling (to compare to field data) and as a starting model in iterative inversions.Advanced visualization techniques allow the simultaneous viewing of the three-dimensional physical property model, the geological information and data from which it is derived, and the geological interpretation and the geophysical results.
