"THE world-wide shortage of elemental sulphur, which became sharply apparent in 1950, has focused attention on the commercial exploitation of sulphur-bearing materials such as pyritic ores, sour natural gas, and smelter gases. Although there •are no known commercial deposits of elemental sulphur in Canada, there are vast quantities of these sulphur-bearing materials. The International Nickel Company of Canada and Canadian Industries Limited have for many years collaborated in an effort to develop economic processes for the recovery of sulphur from the smelter gas arising from Inco's metallurgical operation at Copper Cliff, Ontario. While sulphuric acid has been •produced at Copper Cliff for over twenty years, recent developments will result in a 60 per cent increase in acid production early in 1952 and, later in the year, in commencement of the operation of the largest single unit ever erected for the manufacture of liquid sulphur dioxide.The purpose of this paper is to discuss •briefly the general factors associated with the recovery of sulphur from the Copper Cliff smelter gases and to describe the sulphuric acid operations and the liquid sulphur dioxide development.Processes for the manufacture of elemental sulphur, liquid sulphur dioxide, and sulphuric acid from sulphur-dioxide-bearing smelter gases are well known and in some cases •highly developed."

"This study has been developed to illustrate the trend and pattern of distribution applying to the quantities and costs of the fossil fuels used, and the related amounts of electricity generated, in the thermal segment of the Canadian electric utility industry.Traditionally, Canada's requirements for electric energy have been preponderantly met by hydraulic power. The need for augmented supplies of thermally generated power has mainly developed since the close of World War Il-in an era that has seen drastic decline in the production of indigenous coal and buoyant expansion in the supply of oil and natural gas. Although coal currently is faced with serious competition from the fluid fuels, the utility industry in particular promises an advancing market for coal, because of its abundant resource, at prices less likely to show sharp increase. For Canada as a whole, this trend has been progressive since 1959, and, unbelievable as it may now seem, the extent of the advance by 1975, particularly in Ontario and the Prairie Provinces, may well be as much, or even more, than the present rate of consumption for all purposes.The text and the tables and charts are arranged to focus attention on: the growth of thermal genera ting capability; the historical trend in consumption of fuel and the related production of electricity; patterns of distribution by types of fuel and thermal capacity; the relationship of steam to other sources of thermal capacity; and the quantities, costs and related percentages of electricity generated by types and kinds of fuel used, both regionally and provincially."

Chromate conversion coatings (CCCs) are usually applied to these alloys to enhance their resistance to localized corrosion and to improve paint adhesion. The special properties of these coatings such as their low electrical contact resistance (ECR) make them suitable for satellites. This study is aimed to develop advanced CCCs with the proper appearance, morphologies and surface roughness and to evaluate their role on the ECR and thermo physical properties on hardened aluminium alloy of Alclad-7075-T6. Coating characterization was performed by means of scanning electron microscope (SEM) and atomic force microscope (AFM). ECR of coatings were measured by special laboratory designed instrument and a and c were measured by Emissometer and Reflectometer respectively. In addition, corrosion performance of the CCC-coated alloys was determined by 168 hr exposing to salt-spray testing in accordance with ASTM-B117. The results of accomplished experiments on the developed CCCs in this study have been agreeable concerning available acceptability criteria for satellite surfaces.

"In this study, potential benefits of focculant usage were explored in the processing of mill tailings by hydrocyclones. Tests conducted on copper-nickel mill tailings have demonstrated that, under suitable conditions, flocculation could significantly enhance solid-liquid separation in hydrocyclones. For example, at a feed pulp density of approximately 9%, focculant-assisted hydrocyclone produced an underflow with over 98% solids recovery, compared to a recovery of less than 53% with conventional hydrocyclone. However, feed pulp density was found to be a critical factor, and tailings with pulp densities of greater than about 15%required a two-stage hydrocyclone operation where the focculant-assisted hydrocyclone was employed at the second stage to process the overfow of a conventional hydrocyclone.The underflow and overflow products obtained from the focculant-assisted hydrocy-clone may be discharged into tailings dams in the same manner as those produced by gravity thickeners. The focculant-assisted hydrocy-clone would, however, provide a higher throughput."

"Traditionally, the geologists of Canada have been occupied with the tasks of finding new mineral bodies, locating gas and oil fields or hunting for economic deposits of industrial minerals. A very minor percentage of graduate geologists have applied their skills to solution of the ""urban blight"" or employing their understanding of ""Nature"" for the optimum use of land by mankind. However, things are changing quickly. The role of the geologist in the planning process is being established. It is an exciting time! Geologists are now being consulted on a wide range of urban planning problems. These vary, tor example, from assessment of the geological environment for the new communities of Erin Mills and Meadowvale, which will have total populations in excess of 100,000 people (truly a satellite city), to a complete geological/ geohydrological assessment of the new sanitary landfill for the city of Guelph.Use of geologic techniques and methods for urban studies must be enhanced with certain skills not taught, in the past, to the geologist. These include airphoto interpretation, soil mechanics, geohydrology, municipal engineering and highway engineering to mention a few. The geologist has the unique training to assess the natural environment and to discover, warn and explain the implications of man's attempt to command his environment."

"Paymaster Consolidated Mines, Limited, owns several groups of claims in various parts of the Porcupine district. The area in which mining has been carried on includes parts of lots 5, 6, and 7, con. 1, Tisdale township, and twelve adjoining claims in Deloro township to the south. Highway No. 67A between South Porcupine and Timmins crosses the property.The discovery of the Dome mine in 1909 caused a rush of prospectors to the district and in a few weeks practically all territory adjacent to the Dome was staked. At that time work was started on the West Dome, West Dome Lake, Apex, and Standard properties. These were consolidated in 1930 to form the present Company. Gold was produced from the West Dome Lake from 1915 to 1930, and from the Standard-Paymaster from 1922 to 1928. The total production of the previous and present companies from 1915 to November 30, 1946, has been 487,170 oz. gold and 149,342 oz. silver from 2,337,554 tons of ore."

"In light of the recurring spills and failures of conventional tailings disposal pond dams, a brief review of the Thickened Tailings Disposal (TTD) system is presented. It is shown that by the process of thickening the tailings to a heavy slurry prior to disposal, it is possible to create a self-supporting deposit of tailings and to eliminate the typical superimposed settling pond. These features, together with the ability to reclaim the disposal area even as mining continues, preclude an ecological disaster. IntroductionMine tailings spills are really not such rare occurrences. They have been happening on many continents, in many countries. Neither Canada nor the United States have been spared. In Ontario, the most recent spill occurred at a closed-down tailings disposal area in Matachewan, in 1991.Such continuing disasters could be avoided if a different approach were taken to the disposal of tailings wastes. The recent failures at the Los Frailes mine in Spain, the Omai mine in Guyana, and the Marcopper mine in the Philippines, will hopefully shake up the industry to consider other methods of disposal. The reason why the failure of a conventional tailings disposal dam is so environmentally disastrous is not the dam itself, but the fact that the dam retains a mass of very loose unconsolidated tailings and a great deal of water, or process fluid1. If the dam fails, the contents liquefy completely as they flow through the breach. In this liquid state, they can flow many miles downstream. If the dam itself were built of tailings material, as is often the case, it too would liquefy and join the flow.The reason the material is so loose in the first place is that it has been discharged into a pond filled with water. The tailings particles drift down through the water, their weight reduced by 50% due to buoyancy, to form a loose structure, like a “house of cards,” or lakebottom mud. It doesn’t take much of a shock to collapse the material into a liquefied state."

The prospect of obtaining high-grade concentrates from Canadian pyrochlore ores is rather unlikely, and experimental beneficiation pro-cesses ?appear to have yielded products in the range of 3 to 20 per cent N'b205? A possible solution of the problem is to find an economical chemical method for recovering high-purity Nb2?05 from such concentrates. A technically feasible but economically unproved process is outlined in this paper, in which the concentrate is decomposed by an acid attack and the oxides of niobium and tantalum are isolated and then separated by liquid-liquid extraction. The solution of the ore is adjusted to 7 M HF-5 M HNO3 and the niobium and tantalum are extracted from this solution with methyl isobutyl ketone. The mixed oxides of niobium and tantalum are recovered from the oxdanic phase and dissolved in 0.5 M HF-1.0 M HNO3. Tantalum is extracted preferentially from this solution with methyl isobutyl ketone, leaving niobium in the aqueous phase. By the use of this process it is possible to produce niobium pentoxide and tantalum pentoxi.de in 99.5 per cent purity with a recovery of approximately 95 'per cent, under lab-oratory conditions.

"A laboratory-scale continuous procedure for the up-grading of naturally occurring tin ores, based on the principle of spherical agglomeration, is described. High recoveries are indicated. A proposed second stage suggests useful fractionation steps.IntroductionA LABORATORY-SCALE batch process for the upgrading of a tin ore using the principles of spherical agglomeration has already been described (1). This procedure consisted of milling, for about an hour, a precrushed ore with at least 200 per cent water, 0.2 per cent of a reagent such as tall oil (to render the de-sired ore particles hydrophobic) and about 3 per cent of a viscous petroleum oil. The feed material passed an 8-mesh Tyler sieve, and the percentages of re-agents are based on the dry weight of the feed. Du-ring the grinding, the hydrophobic particles transfer into the oil phase to produce coherent semi-solid bodies while the gangue stays preferentially in the aqueous phase. The concentrate can be separated from the gangue easily by a mechanical operation. Using an ore containing about 0.3 -0.5 per cent tin, grades of from 1.5 to 7.0 per cent were obtained by varying the pH of the system. Recoveries fell from about 80 per cent to as low as 50 per cent as the grade in-creased."

The ability to achieve high situation awareness (SA) in the face of this data overload is a key challenge for effective decision making and information exploitation. Incidents that result in loss of revenue and even life, and compromise safety that are attributed to human error are often the result of system designs that overload human cognitive capabilities. This paper focuses on defining SA as it relates to mining operations and presents methods for improving SA through a scientific approach for electric shovel operator user interface development.

"In the past, the metallurgical industry was most of the time dedicated on their main commodity, recovering base metals like zinc, copper or lead but leaving other valuable side elements in the generated residues. As a result, these accompanying minor elements, like gold, silver, indium or also PGMs can be found in the dumps of the corresponding industry. Because of political unrest, strikes, economic reasons or decreasing primary resources leading to a high supply risk, also those mentioned minor elements moved into the focus of the recycling industry. Therefore, beside the base metals, first of all the recovery of those minor metals would be of high interest contributing to the economic viability of recycling processes, although they occur in much smaller quantities in materials. In this context, residues from zinc industry, like leaching residues or precipitation residues show high potential to carry silver as well as indium next to lead and zinc. Therefore, the paper summarizes carried out thermochemical calculations investigating a possible recovery of silver as well as indium by volatilization and the influence of zinc and lead on this process. Based on these theoretical investigations with HSC, trials in lab scale were done verifying the obtained results.INTRODUCTIONHuge amounts of iron precipitate, mainly jarosite get landfilled every year although there is a high content of valuable metals in this residue beside iron. Nevertheless, jarosite has to be dumped due to the presence of contaminating heavy metals. The accumulation of these residues takes up massive land on the one hand but also causes a series of environmental problems in ecosystems on the other. Moreover, some toxic ingredients such as arsenic and cadmium can be dissolved in rain water and are therefore harmful to the health of the aquatic systems. (Erdem & Özverdi, 2011; ÖzverdI & Erdem, 2010) Approximately 0.5 t of dry jarosite accumulate in the production of 1 t of zinc by the hydrometallurgical zinc-winning route (Svens, 2010). Jarosite is a precipitation residue formed during the iron removal. In general, the iron already exists in the zinc ore which is why zinc ferrite builds up during the roasting step of the zinc ore. Zinc ferrite is only soluble in strongly acidic solutions and during the hot acid leaching step it gets dissolved while zinc and iron enter the solution. It is necessary to get rid of the iron because otherwise it would deposit on the cathode first due to its precious character which would be harmful in the zinc-winning electrolysis. Nevertheless successful investigations were done by adding chlorine to the jarosite to recover silver. These findings leads to another residue which occurs in huge amounts – electric arc furnace dust (abbreviated with EAFD) from the iron and steel industry. In 2013 the annual electric steel production reached about 451 million tons. Around 15-20 kg of EAFD is produced per ton of steel in an electric arc furnace (EAF), creating approximately up to 9 million tons of dust per year. (Grabda, Oleszek, Shibata, & Nakamura, 2014; World Steel Association) Next to elements like zinc, lead and iron, chlorine and fluorine are present in this dust. While galvanized steel plates in the scrap act as a source for zinc, casting powders, flame retardants and synthetic coatings are responsible for the chlorine and fluorine contents in the dust."

In. East Kootenay, two Companies are operating, the Crow's Nest Pass Coal Company of Fernie, with mines at Coal Creek and Michel, and the Corbin Coal and Coke Company, of Corbin and Spokane. Wash., with mines at Corbin. The Crow's Nest Pass Coal Company has also coke-ovens of the bee-hive type at Fernie and Michel. The mines have a productive capacity, with present development and plant, of approximately 1,500,000 tons of coal, and of 300,000 tons of coke annually. The total production in 1923 was 828, 990 tons of coal and 65.990 tons of coke. In the early years of operation, the mines furnished a very large percentage of their output to the railways and smelters. These were, in fact, the primary markets for which the mines were opened and the ovens constructed. The Great Northern Railway had built into Femie, and later extending its line to Michel, became a heavy consumer of both of these mines. The Spokane International, connecting the Crow's Nest branch of the C.P .R. with Spokane, furnished tonnage to Corbin. The Canadian Pacific Railway bought for Crow's Nest consumption. The smelters at Grand Forks and Trail in the Boundary country were large and steady consumers of coke, while in-termittently Northport, Butte, Helena, and Great Falls shared in the product of the ovens.

The inversion of rock mechanical properties based on well-logging data is a common method to drillbit selection in petroleum engineering, the basic principle of which is to use deep-well logging data and experimental regression model to calculate rock mechanical properties. The profile of rock mechanical properties can be established. According to the profile, the type of drillbit can be selected in different formations, which will improve the economic benefit of bit use indicators. Compressive strength of rock is one of the most important parameters. Conventional method to establish regression models of acoustic velocity and uniaxial compressive strength is on the basis of rock core sonic experiments and uniaxial compressive experiments. However, with the increase of deep drilling operation, triaxial compressive strength prediction model will play a more vital role in drillbit optimization selection in deep wells and improving ROP (Rate of Penetration). Triaxial compressive strength is an important parameter to evaluate the formation strength property. In this paper, to the sandstone commonly encountered in oil drilling, combined the rock mechanical experimental results with the changing porosity experimental results under confining pressure, a new interpretation model of triaxial compressive strength based on well logging data is proposed. Firstly, three types of sandstone samples are collected. Then measured components, uniaxial compressive strength, triaxial compressive strength and porosity. Experimental results show that: confining pressure has a significant influence on sandstone strength, with the increase of confining pressure, triaxial compressive strength increase; furthermore, the triaxial compressive strength of different porosity sandstones have different change rules when confining pressures changes; sandstone porosity decreases with the increase of confining pressure and it obeys logarithmic function. According to the results, regression models of sandstone, in-situ uniaxial compressive strength model and uniaxial compressive strength model under normal pressure are generated. Meanwhile, using well logging data in the acoustic velocity, density and gamma value can derive in-situ rock formations uniaxial compressive strength and in-situ porosity. Eventually, a new model established in this paper, containing in porosity, uniaxial compressive strength, lateral pressure and power exponent of regression, can predict triaxial compressive strength which will guide drillbit selection.

"A380 alloy has been widely employed to produce thin-wall components via high pressure die casting (HPDC). During HPDC processing, there is a significant problem of property variation even with the very stable and precision automated casting procedure. The enlarged variation lowers the component performance and affects the steady and uniform property distribution along the whole component. In this study, high shear melt conditioning technology was developed and applied to the melt prior to pouring into the shot sleeve. Experimental results show that with application of intensive melt shearing, the variation of elongation was decreased from 21.8to 13.9%, and yield strength variation was reduced from5.5to 3.6%. The improved property variation is attributed to enhanced nucleation both in shot sleeve and the die-cavity, and to the improved distribution of porosity and secondary phases as a benefit of high shear induced grain refinement. With application of high shear, large number of the Spinel phase (MgAl2O4) particles with double size distribution in average diameter of 80and 300nm were formed. Due to the good orientation relationship and small misfit between alpha Al and MgAl2O4, the particles act as the effective nuclei in shot sleeve and die cavity, respectively.INTRODUCTIONA380 alloy had been widely used for produce automotive components by cold chamber high pressure die casting(HPDC) processing, due to its relative good mechanical properties and cast ability performance, and more important most of A380 ingots were produced by recycled Al alloys. Therefore, to promote utility of A380 will contribute to reducing emission of CO2and to the lightweight of automotive industry as well. When cold chamber HPDC was employed to produce the components, the mechanical properties of A380 alloy always have a distribution range (named variation herein), or in other words the properties were not stable. The reason was ascribed to the typical solidification characteristics occurred in HPDC processing. During HPDC processing, there are three steps of melt movement. The first step is that the melt was poured into shot sleeve at temperature of about 680°C, in which shot sleeve was preheated by few shots of melt filling, or by heater. During step one, the first solidification of melt was happened in shot sleeve and about 20% solid made of coarse a-Al grains was formed(Li, Xiong, & Guo, 2016).Such kind of grains will retain in the final products and deteriorate the properties variation. The second step is that the melt was forced moving forward slowly by plunger at about 0.2–0.3m/s until the liquid melt front to the inner gate of mold. The third step is that the melt moved very fast to complete the filling of die cavity and refilling the solidification shrinkage by fast movement of plunger about 2–3m/s. The second solidification was occurred in die cavity and fine a-Al grains will be formed by high cooling rate at about 500–1000°C/s. From the solidification point of view, the grain size was dominated by nucleation and growth. When HPDC was employed to produce components, the melt quality becomes the priority factor to control the solidification process as the other casting parameters were kept at the same."

"An Independent Electricity System Operator Industrial Accelerator Program (IESO IAP) case study was completed for a mine in Ontario, Canada by SRK Consulting, Inc. The purpose of the study was to analyze the ventilation system to determine whether and which system improvements could reduce the overall electrical power demand of the mine. Financial incentives are offered by the IESO IAP grant program to help cover the capital costs of these improvements. This study included the completion of a full mine ventilation survey as well as measurement of a full suite of electrical parameters of the surface and underground ventilation fans. After these measurements, a base ventilation model was created and established as the system baseline. Changes to the ventilation system were modeled, and their effects on the power demand were projected. The results of the study showed that several improvements were possible which may significantly improve the efficiency of the ventilation system and reduce mine electricity demand.INTRODUCTIONIn 2017, a ventilation study was conducted in accordance with the Independent Electricity System Operator Industrial Accelerator Program (IESO IAP) at a mine in Ontario, Canada. The IESO IAP is designed to assist eligible transmission-connected Canadian companies operating in Ontario to fast track capital investment in major energy conservation projects. The program will provide financial incentives to encourage investment in innovative process changes and equipment retrofits to reduce electricity consumption on the provincial system and to help companies become more competitive by positively impacting their bottom line. There are now four initiatives under the Industrial Accelerator Program:1. Retrofit2. Process & Systems, including Small Capital Projects3. High Performance New Construction4. Energy Managers – a new initiative under the Industrial Accelerator ProgramWithin the program, companies may propose energy saving changes to their current systems where applicable and appropriate. Companies may then be awarded funding to implement the proposed changes. The program allows partial financial compensation to implement certain energy saving changes that would otherwise not be considered due to high capital costs. For larger projects, such as underground mine ventilation systems, a detailed engineering study must be submitted. This study must detail each energy saving change or measure, its savings, and calculate the financial incentives using the IESO IAP Payment Structure. "A mathematical procedure for determining the underground mining level layout which minimizes the total costs of excavation and haulage is described. This procedure has the advantage over previous graphical procedures of being easily amenable to microcomputers. The paper demonstrates through examples how the procedure can be applied to minimizing discounted costs of level layout as well as providing the optimal location of a production shaft.IntroductionIn recent years there have been numerous publications in mining journals concerning the minimization of mine haulage costs. With the rapid escalation of energy costs during the last decade it is not surprising that several studies applying queuing theory, simulation and mathematical programming to mining related transportation problems have been successfully undertaken. Because of the increasing availability of various sizes of computers these techniques have gained considerable popularity as evidenced by the numerous commercial packages presently being marketed.The publications concerned with haulage cost minimization are generally concluded along the lines of ' ... haulage costs at production rate x will be minimized by assigning y units to location z...'. Details about the route followed and whether it guarantees a minimization of costs are seldom considered. Route data has to date been manually resolved and used for input to developed programs. It would appear that no program has been developed to date which simultaneously minimizes costs by both fleet assignment and routing network resolution.Another important factor in transportation problems is the investment cost associated with the routes; road construction costs or, in the case of underground levels, drift excavation costs. Except for special cases the transport network which minimizes haulage costs only will not provide a minimum excavation cost solution.Zarnbo(1) illustrates by graphical and mathematical procedures how central 'facilities' can be located to simultaneously minimize investment in the transport network and haulage costs. Unfortunately these procedures and others recently applied to mine haulage problems do not provide solutions to the generalized problem. Also because these procedures are geared to graphical solutions and hand computations whereby certain possibilities can be 'visually' eliminated, they can be tedious to program and present storage capacity constraints with current microcomputers."

An extensive Precambrian iron-formation lies about 2,000 ft. beneath post-Precambrian rocks in the Fort a Ia Corne Forest Reserve, south of Choiceland, Saskatchewan. The geology, deduced from limited drill results and from some geophysical observations, indicates that the deposit is a characteristic magnetite iron-formation, not uncommon in the exposed Precambrian of Saskatchewan, but also shows certain interesting features of faulting and pre-Paleozoic weathering which have given rise to a pre-served detrital deposit of hematite. The body is of ore grade and of sizeable proportions. T HIS paper is presented in order to set forth the interesting geological features of a Precambrian iron deposit located beneath the cover rocks of the Great Plains region and to comment upon the methods of discovery and interpretation of the nature of the body. Practices used to grow vegetation on stressed areas, the beneficial aspect of the improved aesthetic appearance of company properties from the point of view of public relations and the improved approach to the workplace by the employee are discussed. The revegetation of the tailings area and its gradual transformation into a Wildlife Management Area is reviewed.

THE Michipicoten area, one of numerous iron-bearing "Archean" segments in the Shield, contains two main types of iron formation, a normal Keewatin-type, consisting of interbanded chert, siliceous magnetite and jasper, and, gradational to this, a carbonate-sulphide type which contains large de-posits of siderite and pyrite. The carbonate-sulphide type of iron formation bears a direct and intimate relationship to the volcanic development of the area; it there-by affords some insight into genetic problems of Archeanron formation in general. The purpose of this pa-per is to summarize the geological setting of Michipicoten iron formations and to briefly review genetic aspects of recent work in the area.
