In the last decade a great dealt of attention has been paid to the chemistry of polynuclear gold derivatives with a central heteroatom, not only from the experimental and structural but also from the theoretical standpoint (1). Interesting hypercoordinated species of the type [C(AuPR3)5]+, [C(AuPR3)6]2+, [N(AuPR3)5]2+, [P(AuPR3)5]2+ and [P(AuPR3)6]3+ have been described (2), apart from other complexes with more conventional stoichiometry, and all have in common the presence of gold-gold interactions of ca. 3 Å. Usually, the chemistry of the first row elements of the p-block is known to follow classical rules of bonding, and only in cases of extreme electron-deficiency has the traditional electron count to be reconsidered to account for special types of molecular or solid state structures. Many of these heteroatomcentered complexes are electron-deficient and the gold-gold interactions provide a significant contribution to their stability. The attraction between these closed-shell systems has recently captured the attention in inorganic and organometallic chemistry (1). P. Pyykkö has summarized the available theoretical and experimental evidence of intra- and inter-molecular interactions between heavy metal atoms, such as Au(I) (3). In general, when heavy metals are involved in such interaction, the closed-shell attractions are of metallophilic or van der Waals type, as has been found for d8, d10 coinage-metals, and d10s2 centers. Experimental evidence for the aurophilic Au(I)???Au(I) attraction is available from crystallography, NMR and Raman spectroscopies, and optical spectroscopic measurements of the interaction strength (4). It is manifested in molecular conformations with relatively close Au???Au interactions of ca. 3 Å, whose strength has been estimated at ca. 25-50 kJ/mol (5). These attractions are weaker than most covalent or ionic bonds, but stronger than other van der Waals bonds and comparable in strength to typical hydrogen bonds. The phenomenon cannot be satisfactorily explained by classical theories such as hybridization (3). From a theoretical point of view, the attractions close to equilibrium distances are caused by dispersive interactions together with relativistic effects (6). The attractive contributions are dominated by pair-excitations from the heavy metal, such as gold, strengthened by relativistic effects. In all the cases where there are inter- or intramolecular metal-metal attractions, the correlation effects are essential; if they are omitted, at the Hartree-Fock (HF) level, repulsive interactions are obtained (6). Hence, it is necessary to use at least second-order Møller-Plesset level (MP2) methods for the dispersive forces, which are included in the electronic correlation effects (7).

"IntroductionCrows Nest Resources Limited (CNRL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Shell Canada Resources Limited, is nearing completion of its first coal project, located in southeastern British Columbia. CNRL shipped over 700,000 tonnes of thermal coal to foreign markets in 1982. With the completion of the metallurgical coal plant in December, 1982, shipments of both thermal and metallurgical coal will increase substantially in 1983 and will approach the anticipated operating capacity of 3.0 million tonnes in 1985. The Line Creek Mine lies some 25 kilometres north of Sparwood in southeast British Columbia (Fig. 1). The open-pit mine is located on top of Line Creek Ridge, with coal being hauled 16 km to the thermal and metallurgical coal preparation plants, situated adjacent to the already existing Canadian Pacific Railway. Most of the coal is moved by 108 car unit trains by CP Rail to coal ports in Vancouver, where it is loaded onto vessels destined for overseas markets. Some smaller scale car load shipments are moved by rail to contiguous markets in the Pacific Northwest. History The southeastern British Columbia area, known as the East Kootenays, is steeped in a rich coal mining heritage, dating back to the latter part of the nineteenth century. Predecessors of Crows Nest Resources Limited were instrumental in developing the rich coal reserves in the area. In 1887, William Fernie, a pioneer-cum-prospector recognized the potential of coal deposits in the East Kootenays. Spurred by the relentless push west of the Canadian Pacific Railway through the Crows Nest Pass area, Fernie recognized that it was just a matter of time before the steam locomotives provided him with his required market. That time arrived in 1897 when Fernie helped to form the Crows Nest Pass Coal Company and coal mining commenced at Coal Creek, near his namesake town of Fernie. During its almost 70-year history, this company produced over 48 million tonnes of steam coal and 8 million tonnes of coking coal. In 1965, the Crows Nest Pass Coal Company was re-named Crows Nest Industries, to better reflect its expanded interests into forest products, and it is the latter company which Shell Canada Resources Limited acquired in 1978. The extensive coal resources of Shell, in both Alberta and British Columbia, were rationalized into one group with the birth of Crows Nest Resources Limited to manage and develop the coal holdings."

"The interest in the use of sensor-based particle ore sorting has increased significantly with the recent advances in the sorting technologies and higher capacities per unit. This technology has the potential to provide great value in processing lower grade ores from the mine whilst delivering higher grades to the mill as well as in upgrading waste rock into ore. Typically, the focus is on the amenability of the ore to ore-sorting and associated reductions in the consumption of energy, water and consumables. However, layout has a significant impact on the installed cost of a concentrator and the layout impacts from fitting an ore-sorting circuit into the concentrator plan need to be carefully considered. This paper examines layout considerations that play an important role in ore sorting projects. These include additional crushing and screening requirement, transportation of the rejected material back to the waste stockpile (mine fleet requirements) and effects on concentrator footprints.INRODUCTION Ore sorting has been practiced throughout history with an early report by Agricola in 1556. Metallic and non-metallic minerals were extracted from rocks by laboriously breaking them with hammers and picks and hand-picking selected material with higher grade off a table. The concept has not changed but the sorting technology has evolved significantly over the last 20 years. Ore sorting is usually a dry process in which a portion of the material is rejected based on mineral properties and/or grade. The methods used for sensing ore particles cover a large range of physical properties. A variety of sensors are available that differ on the discrimination technique that is used, which include: photometry, radiometry, conductivity, magnetism, microwave, X-ray transparency: X-ray transparency and luminescence and UV fluorescence (Sivamohan and Forssberg, 1991; Wotruba, 2006). There are two main ore sorting techniques: particle ore sorting and bulk ore sorting. According to Nadolski et al (2018), the potential for sorting is determined though analysis of grade heterogeneity within the orebody (greater heterogeneity represents more opportunity to add value to a project) at the scale of the intended sorting unit size."

Introduction During the last twenty years, science and industry have been strenuously endeavouring to discover new sources and new kinds of liquid fuels and to work out suitable chemical methods for their production. One of the new possibilities for the production of liquid fuel on a large scale is law-temperature carbonization of various grades of coal. The use of alcohol as motor spirit, in spite of its relatively low calorific value, is being widely investigated. Its production by fermentation of sugars, its recovery from the sulphite liquors of the paper industry, its production directly from wood and also from calcium carbide, have all been considered. At present the most promising line of investigation would appear to be the further development of those technical processes which yield liquid fuels from coal; since science has shown the possibility of preparing all kinds of liquid fuels and even the complete conversion of coal into oils. The present paper will consider briefly: 1. The production of primary tar by low temperature carbonization of coal. 2. The hydrogenation of coal. 3. The synthetic processes of Dr. Franz Fischer.

"Selective flotation of chalcopyrite and molybdenite was studied using various surface treatment methods such as electrolysis, ozone treatment, and plasma. Oxidation via electrolysis method indicated that only chalcopyrite surface is affected by electrolysis due to conductivity difference with molybdenite. Oxidation treatments and XPS analyses indicated that chalcopyrite became hydrophilic due to deposition of oxidized iron on its surface. Various oxidizing methods also showed that chalcopyrite was selectively oxidized and this can apply selective flotation of chalcopyrite and molybdenite. The possible mechanisms are proposed in this work based on surface analyses and thermodynamic calculations.INTRODUCTIONCopper sulphide minerals often associate molybdenite (MoS2) which is one of the most important by-products (Wills, 2006). It is important to recover molybdenite perfectly not only since molybdenite is valuable mineral, but also contamination of molybdenite into copper concentrate or contamination of copper mineral into molybdenite concentrate indicates penalty for both concentrate values (Wills, 2006). Conventional separation of copper sulphide and molybdenite has been achieved with sulphide bulk flotation followed by selective molybdenite flotation with NaHS addition since NaHS works as a depressant for copper sulphide. However, this current process shows imperfect molybdenite recovery and depressant such as NaHS needs to be used under specific flotation plant since it might be environmental contaminant. Hirajima et al., (2014) have been studied selective flotation of molybdenite and chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), which is the most important copper mineral, with plasma pre-treatment. They reported that plasma pre-treatment process followed by washing treatment can improve molybdenite floatability and depress chalcopyrite. This result is attributed to surface oxidation and selective conversion of chalcopyrite and molybdenite wettability. It may be hypothesized that another surface oxidation methods could give a similar result as plasma treatment process. To test this hypothesis, in this study, as comprehensive study of oxidation effect, various oxidation methods such as electrolysis, ozone, and plasma were investigated. Electrochemical measurements, thermodynamic calculations to predict the chemical reactions happened during the process, various surface analyses, and flotation experiments were carried out."

Introduction The principal primary iron and steel producing capacity of the Dominion Steel and Coal Corporation is at the Dominion Iron and Steel, Limited, plant at Sydney, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. The main raw materials are Cape Breton coal, Wabana (Newfoundland) iron ore, and Port-au-Port (Newfoundland) limestone. This plant, which was established at the turn of the century has gradually expanded its production facilities so that today its ingot producing capacity is over 720,000 tons annually. Principal operating units of the plant at present are three batteries of 173 Koppers by-product coke ovens with conventional by-product recovery equipment, three blast furnaces .of 15 ft. 6 in., 18 ft. 3 in., and 19 ft. 3 in. hearth diameter (inside the brick), one 700-ton hot metal mixer, ten open hearth furnaces (two of 175-ton capacity, three 12 5-ton, five 60-ton), one 10-ton electric furnace, a 40-inch blooming mill, a billet mill, a rail mill, a tie plate mill, rod and bar mills, and a wire and nail mill. Extensive machine shops and an iron and brass foundry are also available for plant maintenance and repairs. This paper will describe developments during the past five years and those now in process. It will also briefly discuss research being done and indicate the direction of future development.

Custom milling-plants have been operated successfully for a great many years on this continent. One of the outstanding examples in the United States is the Golden Cycle mill at Colorado Springs, which mills the gold-telluride ores from the Cripple Creek district. In eastern Canada, the Northern Custom Concentrators, Limited, at Cobalt, successfully treated the cobalt-silver ores of that area for a number of years. Flotation plants have entered the custom field in the past few years. The building of flotation concentrators to treat ores on a custom basis indicates the advance which has been made in flotation. In fact, three years ago it was considered almost impossible to treat successfully a mixture of miscellaneous ores by flotation. The methods used at that time were considered so delicate that any change, even in a single ore, would usually result in decreasing the effectiveness of the separation. Today we find four large custom flotation plants in the United States and one in Canada for treating complex lead-zinc ores from many different localities. The advent of these mills was brought about by the serious problem confronting the lead-smelting plants due to increasing amounts of zinc in the ores presented for treatment. It was necessary to penalize the mines shipping high-zinc ores. The penalty is justified, because high zinc in the lead blast-furnace charge not only decreases the tonnage of the furnace but increases the amount of flux necessary, as well as increasing the metal loss in the slag. It has been estimated that in the Salt Lake valley alone, 75,000,000 pounds of zinc was lost in the slag-dumps from the operations of three large lead blast-furnace plants. It has also been estimated that $150,000 worth of additional flux was required to slag this zinc. It was to avoid at least a part of this wste and to help maintain an ore supply that custom flotation concentrators were built by the smelters.

"Sirius Minerals is a UK based fertilizer development company focused on advancing into operation its polyhalite project in North Yorkshire, England. The operation is known as the Woodsmith Mine which has an estimated 2.7 Billion Tonnes of reserves and is currently in the construction phase. DMC Mining Services was selected to carry out the construction of four shafts for the project, a production shaft of 6.75m diameter to a depth of 1594 m, a ventilation shaft of 6.75 m diameter to a depth of 1565 m, and two additional shafts to support the construction of the material transport system (the MTS and Lockwood Beck intermediate) to 360m in depth for servicing the underground conveyor network for transport of product from the mine site to the costal port facilities located at Teasside. This paper will review the status of the project to date and the innovative approaches that DMC is utilizing to ensure a safe and successful shaft sinking project. INTRODUCTION The Woodsmith Mine in North Yorkshire is a Sirius Minerals-owned deep potash and polyhalite mine located near to the hamlet of Sneatonthorpe, Whitby in North Yorkshire, England, approximately 75 km east of York. The area of interest is more than 700 km2. The £3.2 billion project is to develop the Woodsmith Mine to extract polyhalite, and a tunnel system to transport it to a materials handling facility and harbour at Teesside. The site is the world's largest and highest-grade deposit of polyhalite and is expected to produce 20 million tonnes of polyhalite, potash and POLY4 per annum, as well as create over 1,000 direct jobs and many more indirectly. It has the potential to generate over £2 billion of annual exports for the UK. As the project will require mining to be undertaken in the North York Moors National Park, many objections were raised about the mine. Sirius Minerals has gone to great lengths to ensure that the project is sensitive to the local landscape, including: mineshaft head frames that will be positioned below ground to reduce their visual impact; surface buildings will be kept to a minimum; and the entire site will be landscaped and screened by existing woodland to blend in with the surrounding area. The project will also abide by strict environmental limits which govern our activity during the construction phase."

HSE management on site by RTA, and cooperation with local equipment manufacturers and contractors of the Saguenay-Lac Saint Jean region are highlighted in this section. The AP60 phase 1 Jonquiere plant aims to demonstrate of the AP60 technology at an industrial scale and allows the further developments of the AP60 cell. The advantages of the AP60 cell technology in terms of productivity, power consumption and environmental footprint are also briefly presented in the paper.

"THIS DEPARTMENT is unique in that it operates in the production stream and also provides an essential service. Its operating function consists of scheduling an ore train to haul 10,000 tons per day over 17.1 miles of track and switching all incoming and outgoing rail equipment on 2.2 miles of track at the minesite and 6.2 miles of track at the metallurgical site. The service it provides is traffic control of all incoming commodities and all outgoing concentrates, metals and acid by rail and truck, even extending to port and ship control for overseas shipments (Fig. 46). Introduction The property of the Britannia Mining and Smelting Company is on the east side of Howe sound, some twenty miles north of-Vancouver. The camp is served by two settlements, one at Britannia Mines townsite, approximately three miles from the water's edge at an altitude of 2,100 feet, the other at Britannia Beach, on Howe sound. The first discovery of copper ore on the property was made in 1888, but it was not until 1905 that production started. From that year until the end of 1944, production had totalled 732,414,420 pounds of copper and 261,126 ounces of gold from six orebodies, known as the Victoria, Empress, No. 5, Fairview, Bluff, and Jane. No. 8 orebody, with which this paper is concerned, was discovered in 1937 by diamond drilling from the 4100 level, some 300 feet above sea level. Development of this orebody to the end of 1944 had included the sinking of a shaft from the 4000 to the 5250 level, and a limited amount of stoping. This work has delimited the orebody from the 3800 to the 4950 level and has indicated upwards of 1,000,000 tons of copper-zinc-gold ore. It is planned to commence production in the near future, while continuing exploration of the orebody at depth.

Performance of industrial gas turbine engines in terms of power output, reduced cooling and efficiency have been continuously increasing in parallel with aero gas turbines due to the advances made in the development of new materials, protective thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) and the advanced diagnostics to monitor service induced problems such as hot corrosion, thermal and thermo-mechanical fatigue and other operational issues, Environmental attack (hot corrosion or high temperature oxidation) is a common degradation mode in the hot section of the gas turbine, Hot corrosion occurs when Na or K bearing compounds in the environment or in the fuel combine with other contaminants such as S and Pb or V to form corrosive sulphates or vanadates thus attacking the protective oxide on the turbine airfoil, These problems pose far more threat to new turbine engine materials such as directional solidified, single crystals and ceramic matrix composites (CMCs). The CMCs due to their increased temperature capability, when used in the combustion chamber, are likely to reduce the peak temperatures attained during combustion and therefore provide the benefits of reduced emissions of oxides of C and N, These issues will be reviewed critically and their impact will be assessed on gas turbine lives. With respect to alternate fuels, past experience has shown that utilization of residual oils and coal derived fuels in gas turbines have resulted in complex deposition and corrosion processes, In recent years biomass derived alternate fuels have been used either through a gasification cycle or through direct firing of the biomass derived liquid fuel with a view to reduce Green House Gases (GHGs) and improve the climatic conditions. In both cases, the resulting high temperature corrosion processes (in the presence of alkaloids in the fuel) are also very complex, leading to premature removal of hot section components, Technology solutions mitigating these fundamental problems will be reviewed and solutions presented.

This paper deals with materials of construction and problems encountered and overcome in leaching and filtration of oxidized sulphuric acid slurry in the Port Radium mill after eight years of operation. The slurry is characterized by a high calcium sulphate content as well as a high chloride level under oxidized conditions, both of which affected initial design and subsequent changes. Leach agitation tanks are of wood with a mild steel superstructure and stainless steel agitator and moving parts below solution level. Electro-polished 316 stainless steel cooling coils are used for temperature control of the slurry. The string filters are of the Oliver type with wood decking. Extensive use is made of wood, Linatex lined mild steel and stainless steel for the slurry handling. Sand casting of steel is a process that offers the greatest design flexibility and highest metallurgical versatility. However, competition from other methods of fabrication is quite keen, constantly forcing the steel casting industry to the production of better quality castings at lower costs. New methods and materials have been put to use in the last ten years by foundries everywhere. This paper, in the form of a progress report, deals with new methods, processes and materials used by Canadian steel foundries for regular production, as well as with developments still in the initial but promising stages. T HE casting of steel to shape is the most direct method of producing steel parts in their final form. It is a basically economical process both as to cost and production time; it is also a process that offers design engineers the greatest flexibility and highest metallurgical versatility. "IN A SHORT PAPER it is impossible to do much more than to list the industrial minerals found in Saskatchewan and to give a brief description of the activity associated with each. I will not attempt to discuss the geology. It is sufficient to say that the settled part of the Province is covered by glacial drift which varies in thickness from a few feet to several hundreds of feet, and that this has hindered the search over much of the Province.CLAYA notable exception to this is the Cypress Hills area in the southwest corner which did not suffer any glacial action and where we find some of the large exposures of Cretaceous clays. In this area, the majority of the deposits are of stone-ware clays which are •an excellent raw material for such products as face brick and sewer pipe. Although the clay cannot be transported over any great distance it is used extensively in Alberta and Saskatchewan in the production of these products."

Hatch Ltd. has recently completed a project to increase refractory gold ore processing capacity at Newmont Mining Corporation’s Twin Creeks facility. The objective of the project was to increase throughput by approximately 10% by adding a third autoclave feed pump to each of the two autoclave circuits. To minimize project capital cost, autoclave feed pumps from Newmont’s decommissioned Lone Tree facility were evaluated and found to be suitable for this new service. The existing pressure oxidation circuit was reviewed in a debottlenecking study to determine other upgrades required to facilitate the increased throughput. Interruption to operations was minimized with a detailed construction plan, supplemented with detailed 3D layout model sequencing studies. The focus of this paper is project development, multi-discipline design considerations, and implementation results.

The Boliden AITIK copper mine is located 100 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle in northern Sweden. A pre-feasibility study was conducted in 2005 with the aim of increasing the capacity of the existing processing plant. After analysis, options to upgrade the existing plant were abandoned in favour of building a new processing plant, with higher capacity and therefore greater profitability. A new plant could be designed with greater flexibility to make potential future expansions easier. A feasibility study for a new 36 Mt/y processing plant including fully AG grinding circuits and flotation was completed in 2006. The project was approved by the Boliden board shortly thereafter. Construction started in the beginning of 2007 and was completed during 2009. Commissioning of the new plant was undertaken in the first half of 2010. The grinding circuit consists of two lines with each line consisting of a 22.5 MW AG mill and a 10 MW Pebble mill in closed circuit with a spiral classifier. The nominal production level is 2 200 t/h for each grinding line. This paper presents the start-up and operation of the grinding circuit.

The following paper will focus on the exploitation of one of the opportunities created by globalization in the Knowledge Management domain - the application of high level tools and methodologies to improve global delivery of greenfield and brownfield aluminium smelter construction projects. DOME MINES, Limited, is a gold producer situated in the Porcupine area of Ontario, 500 miles north of Toronto. During the year 1960, '71 4,600 tons of ore were milled, yielding gold bullion valued at $6,025,370. Prior to conversion to natural gas, an average of 3,200 tons of coal was consumed annually, one third of which was obtained from Canadian sources with the remainder coming from the United States. Due to the distances involved, the freight charges increased the pithead cost by as much as ISO per cent. Steam is generated at a central boiler plant and used for timber treatment, plant heating and process steam. Until August, 1960, steam was supplied during the winter months by two water tube coal-fired boilers, each rated at 200 boiler horsepower at 100 per cent output.
