ABSTRACTThis paper describes the main testing procedures that should be carried out to evaluate the capacity and capability of the service brakes on the large-size diesel-electric trucks now in common use at open-pit mining operations. Brake testing programs in general are described, and then consideration is given to different techniques of service brake testing, brake performance evaluation, braking energy and typical performance characteristics.IntroductionThe first diesel-electric truck with a capacity of about 85 tons was introduced in 1963 by Unit Rig and Equipment Company of Tulsa in cooperation with General Electric Company, who successfully developed and supplied the most important component- motorized wheels. Since then, its popularity and numbers have continued to grow, and now more than 3700 such units are in operation in mines around the world. In Canada alone, their number is more than 700, including about 150 in the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Similarly, their size has also grown from that initial capacity of 85 tons to 350 tons.Although the introduction of the electric trucks proved to be invariably economical, their indiscriminate use was not without severe consequences. Many runaways and even fatalities occurred when the dynamic retarder failed while the truck was travelling loaded down severe grades. The service brakes in such cases proved incapable of stopping runaway trucks, mainly due to their limited capability and the fading caused by excessive heat produced during the act of braking itself. This eventually led the various governments, the open-pit operators and the manufacturers to seriously question the braking capability as well as function of both service brakes and dynamic retarders. Background ?Nickel Rim South Mine started production ramp-up in Q2, 2009. ?The main dewatering pumps were put into use in August 2009. ?3 Feluwa?multisafe?positive displacement pumps ?1700m single lift pumping ?Reliability has been an issue due to the amount of slimes and fibers (from shotcrete) at the pumps. ?Critiqued internal dewatering system to solve some issues we were having with our sumps Findings 1.Much of the final dewatering system was not in place. a)Temporary pain. Difficult to say something is not working when the system was not yet in place as per design. b)Not enough capacity to handle slimes within the system. 2.Need to address issues with the final design: a)Ongoing costs: The end design has operating costs of $2.5 million b)Scoops in Sumps: The end design relies on scoops to be used for cleaning the sumps c)Slimes Recovery: The system mixes 3 different products in the sumps along with the fibers d)Pump repair costs: The existing Tsurumi pumps are too light duty for our slimes

Numerical simulations of straight tube hydroforming of a dual phase steel were performed using both upper and lower bound constitutive models for porous ductile materials. The Gurson model is based upon an upper bound approximation to the material behavior and thus overestimates formability. Conversely, a lower bound solution to Gurson's unit cell geometry was developed by Sun and Wang to provide a conservative estimate of formability. The effect of a compressive axial load (end-feed) on damage development and tube formability is investigated. The resulting upper and lower bound models successfully captured the experimentally determined burst pressure, formability and failure location.

"Areas of bubble contact were delineated for cassiterite in the presence of chloride, fluoride, sulphate, phosphate, oxalate and citrate ions using dodecylamine hydrochloride collector. The limits of pH, and the minimum collector concentration were established using the bubble pick-up technique.Bubble contact did not occur below the p.z.c. (point of zero charge), estimated to be 4.7, in the presence of chloride ion, and fluoride ion showed only a weak response in the same pH range. These anions are considered to act as indifferent electrolytes. Activation at pH values below the p.z.c. was obtained with sulphate, phosphate, oxalate and citrate ions; the greatest response was by oxalate and phosphate ions extending pick-up to between pH 2.0 and 2.5.Activation appeared to be strongest when anionic protonated species were in maximum concentration. Strong activation also corresponded to the formation of very stable metal ion species, thought to be formed on the surface of cassiterite, between exposed stannic ions and modifying anions; dodecylammonium ions being absorbed on the surface so modified."

"One of the most significant developments in environmental law has been the development of mandatory project review processes, at both the federal and provincial levels.FederalWhile, in the past, project review processes have, f or the most part, been spelled out in guidelines, the guidelines have not had the force of law. All that has changed, particularly at the federal level, with the Federal Court decisions commonly referred to as the Old Man River and Alameda and Rafferty Dam cases. These decisions, taken as a whole, are authority for the proposition that the Environmental Assessment and Review Process Guidelines Order, SOR 82-487 is a law of general application, not a mere guideline which may or may not be applied. This federal environmental assessment process first provides for a screening, and, depending upon the results of the screening process, the possibility of a public review. This federal process only applies, however, when the proposal is being undertaken by a federal department, or where the Government of Canada makes a financial contribution, or where federal lands are involved, or where a federal licence or permit is required.Bill C-78, the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, will replace the Federal Environmental Assessment and Review Process Guidelines Order once it has been passed by Parliament. Currently the bill is being widely discussed, both between governments as well as public interest groups.ProvincialOn the provincial scene, there are three project review processes, one concerned with new mines, the second with energy projects and the third with all other major projects. The most recent initiatives taken by British Columbia are twofold. First, the Mine Development Review Process which was in the form of a guideline, has been replaced by the Mine Development Assessment Act. Second, the Major Project Review Process has been formulated and is to apply to four main categories of major projects:1. Pulp and paper production;2. Mineral smelting and refining;3. Chemical products; and4. Major ports and marinas.Energy projects are governed by the Energy Project Review Process which is legislatively mandated under the Utilities Commission Act."

Over the past 20 years, pressure die casting has evolved to a point where structural parts can now be produced by this process. This has been made possible by the development of vacuum die casting and by the development of die-castable, low iron content alloys. This resulted in the production of low porosity, weldable die-cast parts on which heat treatment may be applied. In the present paper, the influence porosities on the tensile properties of as-cast A360 tensile test bars was evaluated. This was done by casting 24 clusters, comprising three 6mm diameter test bars each, in a 280T cold chamber pressure die casting machine after a steady dynamic equilibrium had been reached. Modeling of filling allowed to explain the differences in porosity observed in the 3 samples of a same cluster while the results of solidification modeling were related to the microstructure. Tensile samples were radiographed on a real time X-cube apparatus and separated into 2 lots: samples where no porosity defect were visible and samples with visible defects. By measuring the tensile properties of the 2 lots it was possible to quantify the drop in tensile properties brought about by porosity, which is the most common defect observed in pressure die-cast parts.

"Consolidated Sudbury Basin Mines Limited owns two mines, 4 miles apart, near the southwest end of Sudbury Basin. The Errington mine lies close to the north boundary of Creighton Township and about 18 miles by car from Sudbury. The Vermilion Lake mine is in Fairbank Township, on the south side of Vermilion Lake.The first discovery of base-metal mineralization within Sudbury basin was made by James Stobie in 1897 at Stobie Falls on the Vermilion River, half a mile west of the Errington mine. A few years later Alphonse Oilier made a discovery of massive pyrite with base-metal sulphides near the west end of the present Errington workings.No work of consequence was done on these discoveries until 1924, when Joseph Errington acquired options on a large acreage of ground which was later taken over by the Treadwell Yukon Company Limited. After considerable diamond drilling this company sank No. 1 shaft in 1926. In the next three years, a large amount of underground development was done, a pilot mill was constructed and operated for two years. All operations ceased in 1931 with the fall in metal prices. While in operation the pilot mill treated 186,172 tons of ore the average grade of which was 1·07 per cent copper; 1 10 per cent lead; 4·60 per cent zinc; 0·03 ounces gold; and 1 70 ounces silver.Up to the time of closing in 193 l there had been completed at the mine 26, 790 feet of lateral work and 75,500 feet of surface and underground diamond drilling. The company records, however, showed no figures on ore reserves, except broken ore in stopes amounting to about 60,000 tons. A study of the plans, prior to reopening the mine in 1952, showed 1,450 lineal feet of ore (at 1952 prices) opened up by drifting on the 300-foot and 500- foot levels. It is clear that no comprehensive picture of the structure was had at this time. The orebodies were considered to be very irregular pods scattered through masses of quartzite-carbonate in a sheared zone about 800 feet wide. In some way the ore was believed to be related to the tuff-slate contact zone. With this picture it was impossible to make a reasonable ore estimate or even gauge the tonnage potentialities with any feeling of reliability."

"With energy costs increasing and ore grades diminishing, the role of preconcentration in hard-rock mining operations has gained greater interest. Dense medium separation is a process that can be conducted at particle sizes from 250 to 0.50 mm with high separation efficiency, depending on liberation characteristics of the valuable minerals. Pilot-plant case studies conducted at the SGS Lakefield site are presented, including mineral systems such as spodumene, sulfide-bearing gold ores, and complex sulfide ores. These case studies demonstrate that, for amenable ores, mass rejection of 20–60% is possible while maintaining recoveries of greater than 90%.RÉSUMÉ Au vu de la hausse des coûts liés à l’énergie et du déclin de la teneur des minerais, le rôle de la préconcentration dans les exploitations minières en roche dure présente un intérêt croissant. La séparation (ou concentration) en milieu dense est un processus pouvant être mené sur des calibres de grains de 250 à 0.50 mm avec un rendement élevé de séparation, en fonction des caractéristiques de libération des constituants des minéraux métallifères. Sont présentées dans cet article des études de cas menées dans des usines pilotes du site de Lakefield de SGS, lesquelles incluent des systèmes de minéraux tels que le spodumène, les minerais aurifères sulfurés et les minerais sulfurés complexes. Preconcentration has been practiced in the industry for many years, and is gaining greater interest as the industry copes with processing lower grade, more difficult ores, which typically require finer grind sizes and incur higher energy costs.The benefits of preconcentration are:• lower mining costs, which allows for nonselective mining;• lower process capital and operating costs (e.g., resulting from reduced grinding, flotation, and fines disposal stages);• increased ore reserves, which provides the potential to treat lower grade ore;• increased mine production without expansion of the existing plant or concentrator;• reduced overall tailings impoundment by converting the reject into a byproduct (e.g., underground backfill or aggregate);• improved efficiency of downstream processes (e.g., silica removal in electric arc furnace feed, removal of softer sliming minerals prior to grinding);• potential application to brownfield operations and greenfield projects; and• a “green” process option, which reduces processing energy consumption;– reduces mill feed;– increases stage metal recovery (higher grade feed);– increases mill metal output per tonne processed;– reduces surface plant, tailings dump, and tailings pond requirements because the plant has a small footprint and can be installed underground; and– can be applied to retreatment of old tailings dumps to recover metal values and reduce environmental impacts (e.g., dissolved metal runoff, acid drainage)."

"The mining industry continues to remain challenged. Lower commodity prices, increasing labor costs and more importantly diminishing reserves are amongst some of the primary factors contributing to the difficulties faced. Ore sorting technologies have demonstrated their potential to improve the downstream beneficiation performance. The general processing route sees all primary crushed material milled for liberation and then processed in accordance with characteristics of the gold therein, i.e.: refractory golds would require direct leaching or oxidation whilst free gold would follow the conventional cyanidation process, after gravity concentration. Ore dilution increases the associated operating costs within each stage of this process. The opportunity to process the same throughput at a higher grade can only be achieved through pre-concentration. Sensor based sorting has been examined on numerous occasions by various gold producers. Test work carried out on different bulk low grade gold ores has shown the successful applicability of ore sorting to remove waste, whilst maintaining high recovery rates of gold. The results of a combined XRT/Laser sensor sorter have shown grade improvements of over 300% from feed grades of 0,25g/t to 1,15g/t at gold recoveries of 66% and waste ejection rates of 85%. This paper presents some of the results from the work undertaken by STEINERT with respect to gold sulphide ore sorting and presents a modelled financial scenario, which can enable a company to target and reclaim low grade ores.INTRODUCTION The mining and minerals processing industry presents with many different challenges including, volatile commodity prices, increasing labor costs and more importantly diminishing reserves. Conventional processing routes will continue to play a crucial role in the beneficiation process, however innovative methods of reducing operating costs and optimizing on the overall circuit performance is where technologies such as sensor based sorting come into the fore. Sensor based sorting as a dry mechanical process not only reduces water consumption by eliminating unnecessary waste but also reduces the requirements for reagents in the downstream processes. Sensor based sorting under dry conditions presents a highly efficient alternative to wet pre-concentration methods such as dense medium separation (DMS)."

In order to maximally remove the harmful impurities phosphorus and reduce the loss of valuable elements from Si-based alloy for production of solar-grade silicon, thermodynamic properties of the Si-based alloy were studied. In this work a new model, the Molecular Interaction Volume Model (MIVM) derived from statistical thermodynamics, was successfully used in the Si-based and Si-Fe-based alloy. The calculation started from binary Si-Fe, Si-P and Fe-P systems, then the thermodynamic parameters of ternary systems could be derived based sub-binary systems. Using the activity coefficients of the elements in the Si-based alloys and the saturated vapor pressure of the pure substance of the components, mass fraction of P during vapor-liquid equilibrium can be calculated. The calculated thermodynamic parameters were compared with experimental data available in different publications, and it is found that the thermodynamic parameters calculated using MIVM model are in good agreement with the measured results. The calculated result shows that the mass fraction of phosphorus during vapor-liquid equilibrium of Si-Fe-P melt increases with the increasing phosphorus content and decreasing temperature. This is an important direction for experimental practice in vacuum or low-pressure EML refining of ferrosilicon for potential production of solar-grade silicon without significant vaporization loss of valuable element.

The effects of several fluxes on purification, microstructures and properties of A00 aluminium have been studied. The experimental results and analyses indicate that many cracks and large porosities exist in the surface film above the melt purified by C2Cl6 and that the film is floe and mostly composed of AhO3 and pure aluminum, which carries many carbon particles and AlCh not fully volatilized. And then over 50% of the all-melting residue is pure aluminum, which is one of the major reasons for high melting loss. Moreover, because of a mass of gas bubbles and a state of seethe, there exist many inclusions which size is under l0µm in the microstructure of A00 aluminum purified with C2Cl6 or fluxes containing C2Cl6- With this purifying method, the aluminum crystal grains are extended along the radius that was observed firstly and the average crystal size of A00 aluminum are about 100µm~150µm. In addition, small size inclusions have little affected on tensile strength and micro inclusions under l0µm have little affected on elongation.

In copper mineral processing, pyrite coexisting with copper sulfide minerals like chalcopyrite is separated by flotation as tailings and its oxidation in tailing dams causes the formation of acid mine drainage. This paper proposes carriermicroencapsulation (CME) as a new method for suppressing pyrite flotability, as well as its oxidation. In this method, an organic carrier combined with Ti is used to form a thin Ti02 layer on pyrite, which gives a hydrophilic property and acts as a protective coating against oxidation. To form the coating, a ground pyrite sample was treated with Ti-catechol complex solution under various conditions. Bubble pick-up experiments and flotation experiments showed that the treatment of pyrite with Ticatechol complex changed the hydrophobic nature of pyrite into hydrophilic even in the presence of xanthate as a flotation collector. Oxidation testing of the CME-treated pyrite by 0.02 kmol m-3 HN03 showed that Fe release was suppressed by the CME treatment with respect to the control. This is assumed to be due to the formation of Ti02 coating on the pyrite surface. The effect of CME treatment on chalcopyrite wettability is also discussed.

THIS paper discusses testing and quality control of milled asbestos fibre. It has been composed with the intention of: (I) Summarizing past, present and probable future methods of testing and classifying the various grades of commercial asbestos produced by the Quebec asbestos industry. (2) Acquainting those unfamiliar with the methods used for evaluating, testing and controlling the grading and the quality of Quebec chrysotile asbestos fibres with some of the physical and chemical procedures currently used for that purpose. (3) Discussing some of the complications facing the producers, such as variations in the orebody and special requirements of asbestos manufacturers. ( 4) Detailing some of the present quality control methods. Joining of superalloy Inconel 61 7 with a foil interlayer using transient liquid phase bonding (TLP) technique was studied. Inconel 617 is a solid solution, Ni - Cr - Co- Mo alloy with an exceptional composition of high temperature strength, oxidation, carburization resistance and thermal stability. In this investigation, two bonding temperatures, 1065°C and 1150°C, and two interlayer thicknesses with joining times varying from 5 minutes to 24 hours were employed. Experiments were carried out using nickel base interlayer (A WS BNi-3) with boron as the melting point depressant (MPD) element. Joints were characterized using optical microscopy, SEM, FEG-SEM, EBSD, XRD and microhardness. The results indicated that the rate of elimination of the liquid phase with increasing the bonding temperature, holding time and decreasing the thickness of the interlayer increased. The main precipitates in the diffusion layer had platelike and blocky morphologies for both bonding temperatures and all holding times.

"Finance Minister Donald Macdonald's budget of May 25, 1976 featured a restructuring of the anti-inflation profit controls and a grab bag of tax changes, some of direct interest to the mining industry. All Canadian taxpayers now will be permitted to write off immediately 100% of mineral and oil and gas exploration expenses included after• May 25, 1976 and before July 1 1979. The cost of acquitting Canadian resource property after May 6, 197.4 from a federal or provincial government will now clearly be included in Canadian development expense, and provincial drilling and exploration incentives received after May 25, 1976 will not reduce exploration and development expense for federal income tax purposes. Under tough new anti-inflation profit controls, all controlled businesses, except distributions, will essentially have one uniform set of rules for• determining allowable profit margins; this allowable margin will be determined by product line or by over-all net margin and will be 85% of the higher of the margin obtained in the five years preceding October• 13, 1975 or the one year preceding May 1, 1976. The basic capital cost allowance system is to continue, but many rates will be revised. The ability to offset losses created through claiming capital cost allowances on leased equipment, etc. against other income will be ended with respect to transactions entered into a/te1• budget night. Miscellaneous other tax changes will raise the low rate base for Canadian-controlled private corporations to $750,000 increase retitement plan contribution limits and reduce the rate of branch tax imposed on branches of corporations resident in a country with which Canada has a comprehensive tax treaty to equal the withholding tax rate on dividends under that treaty."

In ferronickel (Fe-Ni) production from oxidized nickeliferous ores, mechanical losses of ferronickel in the slag are reduced by magnetic separation. Slag from the electric furnaces (E/Fs) contains 0.16% Ni. Its magnetic separation gave a pre-concentrate with 0.76% Ni, weighing approximately 6.5% of the feed. Nickel recovery was 29.7%. This pre-concentrate was then treated in a second (concentration) plant. Concentration treatment involves screening, crushing and magnetic separation. A pre-concentrate with 0.76% Ni gave a magnetic concentrate with 2.58% Ni and a non¬magnetic part with 0.35% Ni. Smelting of the non-magnetic part without the addition of a reduction agent in a laboratory electric arc furnace, gave a ferronickel alloy with approximately 20% Ni and a slag with 0.16% Ni.

"IntroductionThe production of pig iron, wrought iron bars and castings in Quebec during the 18th and 19th centuries has been so closely identified by historians with the Forges du St. Maurice on the St. Maurice River a few miles north of Trois Rivières (Three Rivers), that one is sometimes left with the impression that it was the only iron works that ever operated in the province. There were however, about twelve others, one of which was so completely re-built that it should probably be considered as a separate entity. All but two were constructed after the midpoint of the 1800s, coinciding with the growing Canadian demand for ""charcoal pig"" for railway car wheels and castings for industry, and about half of them were technically, if not economically, successful. The misconception about the Forges du St. Maurice may have come about either because of its long history of somewhat less than continuous production over a century and a half, or a tendency of Quebec historians to concentrate on events in the French-Canadian rather than the English-Canadian milieu, but whatever the reason, the other Quebec iron work s have been generally ignored. All but one of the Quebec blast furnaces could be described as ""preindustrial"" with capacities ranging between three and ten tons per day, the exception being the Radnor furnace built in 1892 with a maximum production of about 35 tons per day and an alleged capacity of 50 tons per day.Until a railway network was completed in the 1880s, the location of all the Quebec iron works except the Grantham Iron works was dictated by close proximity to adequate ore reserves because horse transport was of little use beyond a ten-mile radius. The other essentials of forest resources (mainly soft woods) for charcoal, limestone for flux and water power, were generally available except within a few miles on either side of the St. Lawrence river. Among the dozen iron works established in Quebec between 1732 and 1880, seven used bog iron ore in charcoal-fired furnaces."

The latter part of the 20th century saw great advances in the treatment of refractory gold ores coupled with increased reliance on the use of cyanide for gold processing. Now, in many parts of the world, there is social pressure to limit or eliminate the use of cyanide. As well, treatment of some refractory ores or concentrates which have excessive cyanide consumption, gold cyanide pregrobbing or significant sulfide content remain difficult. This paper will outline the history of the development of alkaline sulfide leaching as an ancillary process to nitrogen species catalyzed (NSC) pressure leaching. Electrochemical fundamentals and the applicable thermodynamics of the alkaline sulfide hydrometallurgical system will be outlined. As well, examples of refractory gold recovery with alkaline sulfide hydrometallurgy such as an arsenopyrite gold concentrate application, a chalcopyrite gold concentrate application, a pregrobbing gold ore application, and a cyanide consuming gold ore application will be delineated in this paper.

A groupd of French capitalists, La Compagnie Française des Mines d'Or du Canada, has undertaken the considerable task of developing Otter creek, in the Atlin district, B.C., by hydraulic mining methods. It has long been known that the gravels of this stream carry sufficiently high values in gold to make it attractive as a mining venture, but it was impossible to ignore the existence of formidable natural obstacles to hydraulicing them, and these needed to be taken into serious account before embarking upon any costly programme of development. The tide to the Otter Creek leases was originally held by Mr. H. Maluin, a French engineer well known throughout the north, to whom was to fall the task of financing whatever programme might be decided upon. It was he, too, who would have to assume the responsibility of finally passing judgment upon the practicability of the various devises for overcoming the adverse natural conditions. With an infinite attention to detail, which I believe to be a characteristic of the French people generally, he studied his problem and was finally able to submit to his financial backers a programme which left the very minimum possible to the hazard of accident or chance. Dr. Mandy, on his visit to Otter creek this season, expressed the opinion that our method of opening this difficult creek presented certain features which might be successfully applied in placer operations elsewhere in British Columbia, and it is largely for this reason that the present paper has been prepared. I shall set forth, as well as I can, the practices which have enabled us to overcome rather easily some of the obstacles which nature had unkindly placed in the path which we must take. The natural flow of water in Otter creek is far too little to deal success-fully with the rather excessive amount of glacial drift overburden which lies directly over the gold-bearing gravels. For this natural defect, the only remedy was to procure more water.
