Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) is a methodology for evaluating the environmental impacts associated with a product during its life cycle. LCA is identified as the most reliable method for verifying environmental impacts; however, current LCA-based approaches have certain limitations for environmental analysis of construction products. Integration of the LCA methodology with Discrete Event Simulation (DES) provides a sound framework for modeling and analysing the environmental impacts of construction products. LCA and DES is one possible combination for analysing the cause and effect of various scenarios where time, resources, and randomness of input variables affect the outcome and, therefore, has the potential to address the shortcomings of LCA in construction. Recent studies in disciplines other than construction such as manufacturing systems have revealed positive effects on evaluation of environmental metrics while integrating LCA with DES; however, this integration has not yet been applied for environmental analysis of construction products. By implementing LCA data in a DES model, this research proposes an environmental model of earthmoving operations in a case study. Environmental variables are simultaneously assessed with production variables in the same simulation model and the integration of DES and LCA is discussed.

"Abstract - The Boston deposit is a recently discovered Archean lode-gold deposit located approximately 700 km northeast of Yellowknife, in the southern portion of the Hope Bay volcanic belt. Primary H2O-CO2-NaCl fluid inclusions associated with gold mineralization at Boston are of low salinity (4.6 ± 1.4 eq. wt.% NaCl, n = 182) and contain pure CO2. Homogenization temperatures of liquid-phase inclusions average 270° ± 33°C (n = 141), but some fluid inclusion assemblages contain coexisting liquid- and vapor-phase inclusions that homogenize near critical conditions, suggesting phase separation. In these groups, liquid-phase inclusions homogenized at 299° ± 25°C (n = 24), and vapor-phase inclusions homogenized at 338° ± 28°C (n = 18). These temperatures overlap within error, and a median temperature of ~320°C is taken as representative of trapping conditions within the veins. An approximate pressure of 2-3 kbar was estimated from fluid inclusion isochores at this temperature. Stable isotopic compositions of carbonate minerals from the mineralized zones range from -4.7‰ to -3.1‰ in d13C, and from 11.2‰ to 12.8‰ in d18O; quartz ranges from d18O = 12.8‰ to 14.9‰; and pyrite ranges from d34S = 2.1‰ to 3.5‰. The d18OH2O, d13CCO2, and d34SH2S values of the fluid calculated from these minerals at 320°C are 6‰-9‰, -2.4‰ ± 0.6‰, and 1.5‰ ± 0.5‰, respectively, and are intermediate between metamorphic and magmatic compositions. A unique source for the fluids cannot, therefore, be constrained from these data. Petrographic and geochemical data for the Boston deposit are consistent with data from other Archean lode-gold deposits worldwide, implying that the Boston deposit formed in a similar environment and from similar types of fluids. These results suggest that the Hope Bay volcanic belt may represent a major new mesothermal gold belt in this part of Nunavut. Sommaire - Le gîte Boston a été récemment découvert à environ 700 km au nord-est de Yellowknife dans la partie sud de la ceinture volcanique de Hope Bay, il s’agit d’un gîte d’or filonien d’âge Archéen. "The Craigmont copper-iron skarn deposit is adjacent to the southern margin of the late Triassic Guichon Creek batholith in south-central British Columbia. Host to the ore are sedimentary and volcanic rocks of the western calc-alkaline belt of the Upper TriassicNicola Group. In the mine area, the Nicola Group rocks are a stratigraphically complex sequence, at least 1800 feet thick, which have been subdivided into Basalt, Rhyolite, Carbonate and Clastic Sediment units. All the units strike and dip parallel to the margin of the Guichon Creek batholith and are within the batholith contact aureole. However, only the Clastic Sediment unit is in contact with the batholith.Most of the skarn and ore is within the Carbonate unit and more specifically within an Interbedded facies that consists of lime sandstone, lime siltstone, quartzo-feldspathic siltstone and argillite. The Interbedded facies and the adjacent barren Massive Limestonefacies are interpreted aspart ofa carbonate reef complex. The distribution of skarn and ore within the Interbedded facies suggests that the facies boundary was a physical and chemical barrier that resulted in concentration of metals adjacent to the Massive Limestone facies.Two stages of skarn formation have been recognized at Craigmont. In Stage I, ore-bearing magnetite-rich and actinolite-epidote-magnetite skarns developed both in basaltic rocks and in Fe-bearing siltstone and argillite of the Interbedded facies, while barren grossular garnet-epidote-calcite-pyrite skarns developed in Fe-poor rhyolitic bands within the Interbedded and Massive Limestone facies . In Stage ll, massive, barren grandite garnet skarn replaced mineralized Stage I skarns in the vicinity of diorite plugs. and specularite ore formed in brecciated Stage I skarn and clastic rocks away from the plugs. Theformation of Stage I skarns required no addition of material, only redistribution and concentration of elements already present within the Interbedded facies. However, the concentration of Cu in Stage lore requires a mechanism for more efficient leaching of Cu from the host rocks, an anomalous concentration of Cu at the site of the Stage I orebody or an additional input of Cu from an external source. The formation of Stage II skarn and ore requires only remobilization and recrystallization of Stage I skarn and ore.Copper and iron are the only elements in economic concentrations in the ore and chalcopyrite is the only significant copper-bearing mineral. Chalcopyrite is disseminated and interstitial to magnetite in Stage I mineralized skarns and is interstitial to specularite in the matrix of Stage II breccia ores. Chalcopyrite also occurs with pyrite as stringer ore in bleached • sediments and rhyolite tuffs in the stratigraphic footwall of the main orebodies.The Craigmont deposit has more features in common with Cu-Fe deposits hosted in metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks than it has with typical skarn deposits associated with porphyry copper deposits. The orebody is more likely a product of concentration of metal contained within the Nicola Group rocks than of the mineralizing event that produced the . Highland Valley Cu-Mo porphyry deposits in the central part of the Guichon Creek batholith ."

"The casual visitor is not apt to think of the Adirondacks as a one-time hive of mining and manufacturing activity. However, where there are mountains there are usually minerals and northern New York State is no exception.The Adirondacks are a rocky shield, a great stone cap pulled down over what is now northern New York. The bedrock consists of layered metamorphic rocks which were once sandstones or limestones on the bottom of a shallow sea that covered the region 1000 million years ago. The highlands are composed for the most part of the igneous rock anorthosite. Ancient earth upheavals at temperatures of at least 750°C mixed molten masses of anorthosite and the minerals it contained with the older metamorphic rock, resulting in deposits of iron-titanium oxide s, red garnet and other valuable minerals. Of these, the most readily recognizable was iron.The first hint of the existence of iron ore in the Adirondack Lake Champlain region of upper New York State seems to have come from a Swedish naturalist, Peter Kalm (1716-1769), who travelled through French Canada and visited the military outpost of Fort St. Frederic in 1749. In July of that year, Kalm wrote:""Among the kinds of sand which are found on the shores of Lake Champlain; one is black and the other garnet-colored... and they sparkle when the sun shines. All the grains of this sand without exception are attracted to the magnet, the uppermost or black sand being about a quarter inch deep...""Concerned primarily with the fur trade, the officers and men who occupied this remote bastion of La Belle France were apparently unaware of the industrial and commercial possibilities beneath their feet. No deposit of iron was then known to exist any closer than the Three River s area in Lower Canada."

A large-scale development in exploration and production of uranium ores in the Czech Republic was done in the 2nd half of the 20th century. Many uranium deposits were discovered in the territory of the Czech Republic. Over a period of 50 years approximately, 110 000 tons of uranium in concentrate were produced. Different mining methods were developed and used. One of the most considerable deposits in the Czech Republic is the site Hamr na Jezere ? Straz pod Ralskem where both mining methods ? the underground mining and the acidic in-situ leaching ? were used. The extensive production of uranium led to widespread environmental impacts and contamination of groundwaters. Over the period of ?chemical? leaching of uranium (ca. 32 years), a total of more than 4 million tons of sulphuric acid and other chemicals have been injected into the ground. Most of the products (approximately 99.5 %) of the acids reactions with the rocks are located in the Cenomanian aquifer. The contamination of Cenomanian aquifer covers an area larger than 27 km2. The influenced volume of groundwater is more than 380 million m3. The total amount of dissolved SO4 2- is about 3.6 million tons. Approximately 0.5 % of the contamination is located in the Turonian aquifer. After 1990, a large-scale environmental program was established and the Czech government decided to liquidate the ISL Mine and start the remediation in 1996. The remediation consists of contaminated groundwater pumping, removing of the contaminants and discharging or reinjection of treated water. The objectives of the remedial activities are the followings : to restore the aquifer to a condition guaranteeing continuing usability of Turonian water of Northern Bohemia Cretaceous, to decommission boreholes and surface installations and to incorporate the surface of leaching fields into the ecosystems taking into account regional systems of ecological stability and urban plans. Nowadays four main remedial technological installations for reaching of these aims are used - the ?Station for Acid Solutions Liquidation No. One?, the ?Mother liquor reprocessing? station, the ?Neutralization and Decontamination Station NDS 6? and the ?Neutralization and Decontamination Station NDS 10?. Total capacity of this complex is sufficient to reach the target values of remedial parameters in 2037. The remediation action consists of: pumping of residual solution to the surface, separating uranium from the solution and reprocessing contaminants into commercially usable or ecologically storable products. It is expected that the amount of withdrawn contaminants will vary from 80 000 to 120 000 tons per year. Total costs of all remediation activities are expected to be in excess of 1.5 billion EUR.

APPROXIMA TEL Y 95 percent of Waite-Amulet's Lower A orebody will be mined by diamond-drill stoping. This method of stoping was developed, and has been successfully applied, at the Noranda mine in recent years(1) and is now used in several base-metal and gold mines in north-western Quebec and in other parts of Canada, South Africa, and Australia. The purpose of this paper is to deal with the features of the Lower A ore-body which led' to the adoption of this method of stoping, and in addition to give a general description of stope layout, stope development, main haulage development, chutes and grizzlies, diamond drilling for stope blasting, diamond drilling and equipment, primary blasting, secondary blasting, haulage and loading, ore pockets, pumping and drainage,. and shafts at Waite Amulet. Figure 1 is an isometric projection of the orebody, illustrating the mining system. The factors that led to the adoption of diamond-drill stoping of Lower A orebody are as follows: (1) Safety.0 (2) Size and shape of the orebody, and depth of the orebody below surface. (3) Strength of the hanging-wall, footwall, and sulphide ore. (4) Continuous ring-drilling from sub-level drifts, with no delay for blasting. (5) Large-tonnage blasts at the end of Saturday afternoon shift, after ali men are out of the mine. (6) Sub-levels may be retreated from top to bottom simultaneously, or lower sub-levels may be retreated first without any change in the ring-drilling la yout. (7) Large stopes up to 100 feet wide can be mined, leaving substantial pillars up to 60 feet in width, which may be partially recovered by âiamond~drill stoping or by other stoping methods. (8) A large tonnage may be drilled-off in advance of blasting, but only a supply of unoxidized ore for flotation treatment is blasted. (9) Better ventilation during working shifts. (10) Gravity flow of all broken ore to grizzlies located in the footwall of the orebody. (11) Electric blasting by a crew of two men.

"Selection of the appropriate kriging plan during indicator kriging estimations is of a paramount importance to the precision of ore reserve estimation. However, very little is known on the sensitivy of indicator kriging results when changing the kriging plan parameters (mainly search distance and number of samples). This paper evaluates the effect of the search distance and number of samples on indicator kriging results using a gold deposit as a case study.IntroductionBlock estimation using kriging is based on the autocorrelation function (variogram) on one hand and on the kriging plan on the other. As far as the variogram is concerned it is more or less subjectively adjusted and this is reflected on its parameters (range, sill, nugget effect and anisotropy). The effect of a poor estimation of these parameters on the kriging variance of ordinary kriging has been proven very important (Brooker, 1986). Choosing a kriging plan is generally a difficult matter depending on the estimation type (global or local). Generally there is not a unique kriging plan be cause there is not a unique structural analysis (variogram). There are no rules or dogmas in choosing a kriging plan but it is rather a function of the sampling pattern (David, 1982).Structural analysis requires the hypothesis of quasistationarity but very often either the data available within the zone of quasi-stationarity are too many so that the search distance is reduced during kriging or the data are too few to satisfy a stationary kriging system (Journel and Huijbregts 1978). As a rule, the larger the neighbourhood, the more precise the estimates should be , but for large neighbourhoods the hypothesis of stationarity does not always hold (Rivoirard 1987; Armstrong and Champigny 1989)."

"THIS SESSION marks something of a milestone in that it is, as far as I know, the first session at a CIM Annual Meeting devoted entirely to exploration geochemistry. This is an indication of the general acceptance and widespread recognition by industry of geochemistry in mineral exploration. As a first, I hope it proves sufficiently successful and interesting that geochemical exploration sessions will become a routine part of future CIM annual meetings. The greater use and acceptance of geochemistry has resulted in many investigations and advances, especially in areas such as the Canadian Shield. For a first session on geochemistry, the meeting in Quebec suggested an ideal opportunity to assess these advances and report on the current application of geochemistry in the Shield. The theme of the session is ""Geochemical Exploration in the Canadian Shield - The State of the Art."" A series of six papers will be presented dealing with the various dispersion media - rocks, heavy minerals, ""soils"", lake sediments, waters and vegetation. As a background to the individual presentations, I would like to take a few minutes to briefly trace the history of the use of geochemistry in the Canadian Shield."

"Dome Mine's No.8 shaft is located about 1 km northeast of Dome's No.3 shaft and mill complex in South Porcupine, Ontario.No.8 shaft was brought into production in 1984 to hoist ore and waste for the complete mine as well as to service the mine from the 1600 level and below. Access above 1600 level is provided by No. 3 shaft.The rectangular shaft has six compartments consisting of two skips, a cage, counterweight, manway, and a service compartment. The over-all size of the shaft is 14 ft 7 in. by 20 ft by 7 in. (Fig. 1). A 7th compartment for shaft deepening is incorporated in the bottom 500 ft of shaft. The shaft is 5470 ft deep. The loading pocket is located at 5300 ft and the dump 61 ft below the collar.Surface facilities consist of a concrete headframe and a structural steel hoistroom which houses the cage and production hoists . The service hoist is a 12-ft diameter double drum, with one 1750 HP DC motor, and the production hoist is a 15-ft diameter double drum with twin 1750 HP DC motors.Both hoists have a single clutch and a single reduction gear train built by Orenstein & Koppel, and equipped with Canadian General Electric drives. The cage hoist is equipped with a disc pinion brake.The skips were originally aluminum 14-ton capacity, Rolla-chute design with steel liners on three sides and 4 in. of rubber on the back, to absorb the loading impact. The original guide rollers consisted of fixed 10 in. pneumatic tires. The face-to-face units were eventually replaced with larger airplane-type tires mounted on a spring loaded pivot arm."

Rio Tinto Fer et Titane (RTFT) operates a metallurgical complex in Sorel-Tracey, Canada. In the Ore Preparation Plant (OPP), ilmenite ore is roasted through four parallel rotary kilns generating 95% of the plant wide sulphur dioxide (SO2) emissions. RTFT proactively set an annual emission cap for SO2 to be achieved by 2015. To achieve this targeted SO2 reductions, a technology evaluation and selection exercise was carried out, followed by detailed engineering and implementation. After a detailed evaluation of SO2 scrubbing technologies, the Circulating Dry Scrubber (CDS) system was selected as the most appropriate desulphurization system for this application. The system was implemented and commissioned from 2013 to 2015. General performance testing conducted in May 2015 demonstrated that the system achieved and surpassed the anticipated design values in terms of SO2 removal efficiency and hydrated lime utilisation. This paper summarizes the SO2 technology selection process, design features of the selected technology, project implementation and final performance testing of the SO2 abatement system.

L'affinage des grains dans les alliages d'aluminium consiste à augmenter le nombre de sites de cristallisation de la phase a-Al afin d'obtenir une structure fine. Les alliages mères de type Al-Ti-B sont largement utilisés comme raffineurs des grains. Cette étude a pour but d'établir des mécanismes convenables d'affinage des grains dans l'alliage A356 en utilisant cinq alliages mères et deux températures de coulée (750°C et 950°C). Les résultats montrent que la phase a-Al prend une forme selon l'alliage mère ajoute; les échantillons coules a haute température montrent une taille de grain plus grosse; les températures de germination et de croissance augmentent avec I' augmentation du Ti ou du B et la taille des grains diminue. L'alliage mère Al-4%B montre une puissance remarquable en comparaison d'autres alliages mères. Pour cet alliage mère, le titane résiduel dans l'alliage A356 réagit avec le bore pour former TiB2 qui, par la suite, agit comme un germe actif pour la phase a-Al.

Selective leaching of lead from a Pb-Ag-Zn concentrate with hydrogen peroxide in citrate solutions was studied at room temperature. Leaching tests were performed, varying the H2O2 concentration and the solid-liquid ratio, holding the solution pH constant at 7, and the citrate concentration at 1 M. Lead extractions of 100 % were achieved with 4 and 5 times the stoichiometric quantity needed to form elemental sulfur, with only a small amount of metal impurities dissolved (Ag, Zn and Fe). The lead solubility limit at those conditions was found to be ~21 g L-1. X-ray diffraction analyses of the leach residues were free of galena (PbS), while other metal sulfides, such as sphalerite (ZnS), chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) and pyrite (FeS2), were basically unaffected.

Abstract Following discovery on the Giant property of very promising gold deposits, some of which terminate against the steeply-dipping West Bay fault, a geological study was initiated co locate possible faulted extensions of the ore. Geological mapping revealed that the ore and the shear zones to which the ore is confined are older than the fault and therefore subject co displacement by it. It also disclosed several diabase dykes which seem co provide the best basis for determining the fault movement. After applying various techniques co determine their strikes and dips, the dykes were used as structural markers and it was estimated that, subject co certain possible errors, the movement on the fault was 16,140 feet (3.06 miles) south and 1,570 feet (0.297 miles) down on the west side relative co the ease. Evidence supporting this conclusion was obtained when subsequent deep diamond-drill holes intended to test the hypothesis cut an ore-bearing major shear zone which, so far as can be determined, is nearly identical with its present correlative on the Giant property. Introduction The fault under consideration follows a northerly trend past the west side of the original settlement of Yellowknife, which is situated 600 miles north of Edmonton and 400 miles from the Northern Alberta Railway terminus at Waterways, Alberta. The mining properties chiefly concerned include the southern part of the Giant claims, on the east side of the fault, and the Con-Rycon-Demelt claims, on the west side, 3Y2 miles to the south. Geological data were also obtained from the eastern part of the A. Y.E. property, which lies south of the Giant claims, and from the Negus, Meg, Yellorex, and Kam properties, which are south and southeast of the Con-Rycon-Demelt claims. Recognition of the major faults in the Yellowknife Bay area, including the West Bay fault which appears to be the greatest, resulted from the work of Dr. A. W. Jolliffe (McGill University, formerly of the Geological Survey of Canada) in 1935 and subsequent years. It has been stated with little exaggeration that these faults rank with the largest known steeply-dipping dislocations of the earth's crust. In the winter of 1939, a mineralized shear zone named the Creek Vein was found on the Giant property. It was noticed that the space relationship between the new shear zone and a body of quartz-feldspar porphyry is roughly the same as that between the Con C-4 shear zone and a body of acidic flows lying north of the Con property. Coupling this relation with the assumption that the movement along the fault is dominantly horizontal, it was postulated that the Giant shear zone represented the faulted extension of the Con C-4 shear.

During 1998 COGEMA Resources Inc. announced that operations at the Cluff Lake mine will be suspended indefinitely by the end of year 2000 as a result of deteriorating uranium market conditions. To remain profitable, Cluff Lake mine started an aggressive cost reduction program. A cost reduction team was formed to look for ways to lower production costs. The focus of this team was to screen all areas and to come up with ideas to improve the economy of the mine and ensure the viability of the operations over the remaining three years of operations. Among the areas where significant savings were achieved are: (1) replacement of portion of cement with fly ash in backfill; (2) backfill optimization; and (3) new shotcrete plant installation on site for bulk in-house shotcrete production. This paper details the research work carried out by Cluff Lake mine on these projects and results of its application.

"I THANK YOU for the invitation which The Mining Society of Nova Scotia extended, originally to Gordon Berry, manager 'of our Point Tupper Refinery, to join you at this meeting and discuss refining and petrochemicals in their relation to this region. There are natural advantages in Nova Scotia which have made possible, and will continue to make possible, sizeable developments both in petroleum refining and in chemicals. Equally, however, as is the case everywhere, there are certain constraints. For clarity in this presentation, I will state some of these constraints right at the beginning. First, of any future developments from now on, only a small proportion of the products can be expected to go into local markets. I can make the point best with a few figures. Petroleum companies all have market forecasts. None ever work out to be perfect, but the trends are relatively predictable and the orders of magnitude are certainly correct. "Rare earth elements (REEs) have many key applications in traditional and advanced technologies. A shortage of several critical REEs is expected due to the discrepancy between the availability of REEs from REE deposits and the REE demand from the market. REE recovery and separation from secondary resources such as uranium wastes and recycled materials might help balance the shortfall in a cost-effective way. This paper presents data concerning the recovery of heavy REEs (HREEs) from uranium raffinate. It also discusses the design, commissioning, and operation of a solvent extraction pilot plant for the separation of REEs.RÉSUMÉ Les éléments des terres rares (ÉTR) trouvent de nombreuses applications importantes dans les technologies classiques et de pointe. On prévoit une pénurie de plusieurs ÉTR critiques en raison des divergences constatées entre la disponibilité des ÉTR provenant de gisement d’éléments des terres rares, et la demande d’ÉTR sur le marché. Selective precipitation including neutralization, oxalate, and double-salt precipitation, as well as sulfide precipitation, ion exchange (IX), and solvent extraction (SX) are commonly used technologies for the recovery and purification of rare earth element (REE) solutions. REE oxalate precipitation can effectively remove Fe, Al, Ca, Si, and other impurities by taking advantage of the solubility difference between REE oxalates and impurities in the acidic solution (Xu, 2005)."

IN recent years, most of the reconnaissance work of the Geological Survey of Canada has been mapped on a scale of 1 inch to 4 miles. Topographic base maps, commonly made from aerial photographs, were available to the geologist for such work. The advent of war curtailed aerial photography for civilian purposes, and by 1941 all areas already photographed had been geologically mapped. Nevertheless, the need for geological maps to assist post-war prospecting was so apparent, and the country to be covered is so vast, that some new method of rapid mapping had to be devised. It was felt that the need would be met if geological maps could be produced at a scale of 1 inch to 8 miles, provided they were sufficiently accurate in topographic detail to serve as guides to travel. Though in such maps there would be considerable sacrifice of geological detail, they would serve to outline, at least approximately, the major geological units, some of which might prove of sufficient interest to warrant later detailed study. It seemed that such mapping would be particularly useful in the northern regions of Canada which the work of early explorers has indicated are underlain largely by granitic rocks. These, so far as is known, are barren of mineral deposits, but within them are known to be areas or bands of 'greenstones' of the type that, in some localities, have been found to contain valuable orebodies. The problem, then, was to devise a method of mapping, particularly of such greenstone bands, that would make it possible to cover a relatively large area-say 30,000 square miles-in one season and at a cost below that of 4-mile mapping, with, of course, some sacrifice of accuracy. The problem seemed to be threefold: (a) to observe as much of the bed-rock as possible; (b) to produce a topographical map of as much of the area as possible, with particular reference to portions of geological interest; and (c) to cover as large an area as possible in a limited time, which meant faster modes of travel than have hitherto been used. The obvious answer to all three phases of the problem was the use of aircraft. If rock types could be broadly differentiated from the air, reconnaissance traverses by air would supply the answer to the first part of the problem. For topography, air photographs taken on reconnaissance flights appeared to be the answer. For the third phase of the problem, the use of aircraft was ideal.

"The Geophysics/Geochemistry Section of the Ontario Geological Survey initiated an aerial geophysical survey in the James Bay Lowlands, Cretaceous Basin area, District of Cochrane, Ontario. The survey was contracted to Scintrex Limited and was carried out in 1978. Approximately 8000 line kilometres of airborne electromagnetic and magnetic data were recorded. The Tridem airborne electromagnetic system was employed, mounted in a twin-engined PB Y Canso aircraft. This specific Tridem system uses a vertical coaxial coil configuration and measures in-phase and quadrature components of the secondary field at 500, 2000 and 8000 Hz.The primary purpose of this survey was to map subsurface conductivities and, in particular, to search for lignite deposits. Physical property measurements show that electrical methods should detect differen ces in conductivity between the moderately conducting clay-lignite horizons and the less conducting clay, soil, muskeg and gravel horizons. A preliminary Tridem test survey, as well as surface DC resistivity soundings, confirmed this approach. The interpretation of the present survey data indicates that Tridem is a suitable electrical method to aid lignite exploration in the James Bay Lowlands."

"A novel hydrometallurgical process for copper recovery from waste printed circuit boards has been proposed, which consists of selective leaching of copper metal as Cu(I) by Cu(II) in ammoniacal alkaline solution, purification, and electrowinning. The distinct feature of this process is much lower power consumption during the electrowinning than that during the conventional one from acidic copper sulfate media, because the deposition of copper metal from Cu(I) at the cathode and the oxidation of Cu(I) to Cu(II) at the anode take place in the present method. In the laboratory-scale tests using waste printed circuit boards, high purity copper which contains 1.1ppm of impurities was obtained in a chloride system. INTRODUCTIONThe recovery of various metals from waste materials is an important issue in order to conserve the environment and metal resources. Copper is used for cables, electric appliances, etc., and is currently a very important material for industries and will continue to be in the future. Among the wastes that contain copper, one of the most complex recycling materials is electronic scrap like printed circuit boards (PCB), which generally contain 10-30% copper as well as plastics, fibreglass and other metals. There are two ways to recover copper, either pyrometallurgical or hydrometallurgical. Hydrometallurgical treatments generally have more flexibilities in the process scale and control. The separation processes tend to become complicated because of the poor selectivity during the leaching in the sulphuric and hydrochloric acid media. On the other hand, the use of ammonia as a complexing agent, gave a higher selectivity for copper leaching (Nigo, Majima, Hirato, Awakura, & Iwai, 1993; Majima, Nigo, Hirato, Awakura, & Iwai, 1993; Zhou, Shinme, & Anezaki, 1995; Koyama, Tanaka, & Lee, 2006) .In this study, recycling process containing leaching, copper deposition at a cathode and oxidation of copper(I) at an anode from ammoniacal alkaline solutions containing Cu(I) or Cu(II) is introduced. Furthermore, copper recovery from a waste printed circuit boards and impurity behaviour was examined in ammonia-ammonium sulfate (sulfate system) and ammonia-ammonium chloride (chloride system) systems."

Carbon anodes in aluminium reduction cells are continuously consumed during electrolysis. In prebake cells the anodes are replaced at regular intervals. The spent anodes, called butts, are often allowed to cool in air while emitting fluorides into the building from the hot alumina cover and the adhering bath. In modem smelters spent anodes are placed inside enclosures and fluoride emissions during cooling are effectively reduced. Fluoride emissions from spent anodes were estimated by considering the kinetics of fluoride formation, a heat transfer analysis of the cooling anode butt and the ventilation flow from a cavity. Fluoride emissions from large anode butts cooling inside enclosures were compared with those cooling in air. Good agreement with published experimental values was obtained for enclosures having different leakage opemngs, when a hydrofluorination reaction of the spent anodes was included.
