"IntroductionTHE PURPOSE of this paper is to discuss briefly the main logging and testing devices presently at our disposal, to point out some of their limitations, and to suggest possible improvements of the techniques.Some of the more important devices .are those that are used in:(1) Coring(2) Formation testing(3) Electric well logging(4) Radioactive well logging(5) Measuring of bottom hole pressures(6) Sampling of reservoir fluidsThe first four of these procedures are concerned with the well while it is in the process of drilling. The last two are carried out as soon as possible after a well has been brought into production and .at intervals during its life. My remarks will be concerned mostly with certain aspects of formation testing. The reservoir engineer is dependent on the information derived from these operations in order to obtain a clear picture of the conditions in a reservoir and to enable him to assess and forecast its future behaviour.Since any calculation is no better than the data on which it is based, not enough emphasis can be placed on the necessity for the testing and logging equipment to be of the highest quality and for the analysis of the results obtained to be thorough."

"Bay d'Espoir is in the approximate center of the south coast of Newfoundland. The geology of the area can most conveniently be considered in terms of three units: (1) an Ordovician or older polydeformed terrain termed the Little Passage Gneisses; (2) a Lower-Middle Ordovician volcano-sedimentary sequence assigned to the Baie d'Espoir Group; and (3) granitoid intrusive rocks of mid-Paleozoic age. Mineralizing events accompanied the formation of the latter two units.The Baie d'Espoir Group comprises a dominantly sedimentary sequence of pre-Middle Ordovician shelf and distal turbidite sediments deposited on the eastern margin of Iapetus. A significant volcanic component is, however, present in the Isle Galet Formation, consisting of up to 30% felsic volcanic rocks interbedded with sedimentary and epiclastic rocks. The Isle Galet Formation hosts several disseminated to thinly bedded Pb-Zn-Ag occurrences associated with altered felsic tuff and graphitic shale. They occasionally grade laterally into pyrite iron formation and appear to have been deposited in a very distal volcanic environment. The Isle Galet Formation is a time equivalent of the mineralized pre-Caradocian island-arc sequences of central Newfoundland, but differs from them both in style of volcanism and in the nature of the associated mineral deposits. It is, however, comparable in many respects to mineralized volcanic sequences in the La Poile Bay area of southwestern Newfoundland.Mineralization associated with granitoid rocks in Bay d'Espoir is best developed around the southeast margin of the North Bay Granite, where two-mica leucogranite forms a marginal phase. Numerous minor base metal showings occupy quartz, quartz-carbonate and barite veins in the adjacent sedimentary rocks. Collectively, the showings exhibit a well-developed, zonal pattern around the granite margin; molybdenite (±py, cpy) predominates near the contact, giving way outward to galena (±sph, py, asp, cpy) and eventually to stibnite (±asp, py) at the periphery. Mineralization associated with granites in similar settings elsewhere in southern Newfoundland includes tungsten in the Grey River and Granite Lake areas and molybdenite in the Rencontre Lake area."

This paper presents the design of a model and process simulation of a vertical mill based on a population balance model. The simulator, Simulink, which is a systematic modeling tool within MATLAB, was used for the simulation. The model will simulate the real time variation trend of each size fraction in the feed material to the vertical mill, as well as, the size distribution of the batch grinding products. Breakage distribution and selection functions are calculated based on batch grinding laboratory experiments using Back-calculation method. The simulated size distributions correspond with those in the actual mill operation having a relative error of less than 0.50%. This work lays the foundation for future research on modelling and simulation of a closed circuit grinding operation consisting of a vertical mill with hydrocyclone classifier.

"The recycling of wastepaper has become an important and common process worldwide. Techniques similar to those used in the mineral processing industry are used to produce high quality recycled fibres for use in newsprint. The mineral processing group at McGill University, in conjunction with the Pulp and Paper industry (Mechanical and Chemi-mechanical Wood Pulp Network), has adapted one of these techniques, column flotation, for the purpose of deinking wastepaper. This article describes the typical process of recycling wastepaper from a mineral processing point of view. It also presents results from McGill University’s flotation column test work at a Québec wastepaper recycling facility. IntroductionThe recycling of wastepaper has become an important and common process worldwide, including Canada which is now the world’s largest importer of wastepaper (CPPA, 1996). Much of the current drive to increase the utilization rate of recovered paper is a reaction to the solid-waste disposal problem that faces many Canadian and United States municipalities. The real problem in the disposal of solid waste is not the absolute amount of garbage that must be disposed of each year, but this amount in relation to available disposal capacity.Environmental restrictions on the creation of new landfill sites and incinerators (the two main options for disposal of municipal solid waste) have tightened the demand/supply balance in the solid waste disposal market. This shrinking availability of waste disposal sites in the face of increasing population with greater disposal requirements defines the Developed World’s solid waste crisis. Not only are there fewer disposal sites available, but the costs of using them is skyrocketing. These factors have increased government regulations mandating recycled paper content in newsprint. Conservation and environmental issues make the current drive for wastepaper recycling a real issue and business opportunity."

"The orebodies of the Campbell and Dickenson mines are localized within an anomalously fissile and deformed zone that transects the eastern margin of a dominantly mafic volcanic complex close to its contact with a synchronously formed sedimentary basin containing clastic and chemical sedimentary rocks. The ore zones are mainly quartz-carbonate fissure veins and siliceous replacement zones formed during deformation and metamorphism, although there are some syn-volcanic exhalative ore zones in the mines. On a regional scale, the volcanic rocks have been affected by syn-volcanic spilitic alteration which has involved the leaching of Fe, Mg, Au and As from, and the addition of Na and variable amounts of Si to bleached zones enveloping primary permeable structures in the rocks. The leached constituents were deposited on the contemporaneous sea floor as iron-rich chemical sedimentary rocks. Although this alteration is not closely related, spatially, to the ore zones, it is characteristic of the general environment, and may serve to distinguish gold-prospective from gold-barren areas on a mining-camp scale.Closely associated spatially with gold deposits is a zone of feldspar-destructive alteration within which the volcanic rocks are characteristically feldspar-free, enriched in As, Au and to a variable degree in Si, and depleted in Na, Ca and to a variable degree in Mg, Fe and K. The alteration zone is also characterized by abundant, variably transposed, small quartz-dolomite to ferrodolomite veinlets formed during deformation and metamorphism, and includes, but extends outside of, the anomalously fissile zone hosting the orebodies. The alteration zone is interpreted to have formed syn-volcanically within the upper part of a major submarine hydrothermal discharge zone."

"The coals of the Sydney and Pictou coalfields are generally classed as high volatile ""A "" and medium volatile bituminous coals but there are significant differences within and even beyond this rank. These are related to the observation that the coalification in eastern Canada is essentially post-deformational, resulting in a general increase of rank with depth in individual seams.Exploration drilling in the Sydney coalfield has shown that the rank increases offshore to M. V. bituminous at mineable depths and in the Pictou field to L. V. bituminous coal. There is also a marked easterly shift in rank within one seam at the same depth at Sydney, with the result that M. V. coal will be reached sooner in the Donkin Reserve area (at 700 m depth) than in the Lingan-No , 26 Reserve area (at 900 m depth). These rank changes are important for the manufacturing of metallurgical coke as shown with coke stability predictions based on petrographic analyses. The L. V. coal of the Pictou field can be used for blending purposes and is the only known L. V. deposit of mineable thickness in eastern Canada.In addition, the vertical rank changes between seams have been studied in ten boreholes. They are not constant within the confines of the Sydney coalfield. Four separate areas can be recognized, each with different coalification gradients, which can be related to changes in the paleogeothermal gradients . Variations of 2.5 degrees to 6. 7 degrees CI IOO m are indicated and geological causes for these changes are suggested.IntroductionThe Sydney coalfield is the largest and most important field in eastern Can ad a, and although it has been in production some 200 years, the remaining ""demonstrated "" resources of 1.6 billion metric tons can extend its production capability for at least another 100 years. All coals mined are high volatile "" A"" bituminous and have been used for both thermal and metallurgical purposes. For the latter rank variations even of a minor scale are of critical importance for the manufacturing of metallurgical coke.The significance at the present time of the Pictou coalfield, which has only modest remaining "" demonstrated"" resources of 60 million metric ton s, lies in the discovery in 1975 of a 14-million-ton deposit of low volatile bituminous coal. It is the only known low-volatile coal in eastern Canada and is suitable for use as a blend for metallurgical coal. As such, it could supply the Sydney coke ovens for a period of 30 years at the current rate o f coke production and replace imported American low volatile coal.Consequently, coal rank studies of the Sydney and Pictou fields are important not only from a geological point of view, but also because of economic considerations."

This paper is derived from a document that compiles autogenous and semi-autogenous mill installations worldwide, through the end of 2010. Updates have been solicited from all major mill manufacturers and most have responded. A review of AG/SAG mills sold to date and in the last five years indicates that the AG/SAG mill market is very healthy and the trend is larger diameter mills with high diameter-to-length ratios. Ring motors (gearless) are the preferred drives for large mills even though the power transmitted through a gear drive is expected to near 11,000 kW per pinion in the near future.

To overcome the challenges of mineral CO2 sequestration, this work utilizes a unique proprietary Gravity Pressure Vessel (GPV) reactor technology, and focuses on reaction products of high economic value. The GPV provides intense process conditions through hydrostatic pressurization and heat exchange integration that harvests exothermic reaction energy. Here, laboratory-scale tests of the envisioned process was performed in tubular and continuously stirred tank reactor (CSTR) autoclave reactors. The mineral used was Olivine (~Mg1.6Fe2+0.4(SiO4) + ppm Ni/Cr), although asbestos, steel slags and oil shale residues are also under investigation. The effect of several process parameters on reaction extent and product properties was tested: CO2 pressure, temperature, residence time, additives (buffers, lixiviants, chelators, oxidizers), solids loading, and mixing rate. The products (carbonates, amorphous silica and Chromite) were physically separated (based on size, density and magnetic properties), characterized (for chemistry, mineralogy and morphology) and tested in intended applications (e.g. as pozzolanic carbon-negative building material). Economically, it is found that product value is the main driver for mineral carbonation, rather than, or in addition to, the sequestered CO2. The approach of using a GPV and focusing on valuable reaction products could thus make CO2 mineralization a feasible and sustainable hydrometallurgical process.

This paper outlines the principles of friction hoisting and the components involved, and gives a description of a specific mine hoist. Friction hoisting is compared with conventional drum hoisting, and the depth of shaft at which friction hoists become more economical than drum hoists, with respect to power consumption, is determined. Introduction T HE purpose of this paper is to outline the principles of friction hoisting, to describe the components and to show the advantages of multi-rope friction hoisting. Some calculations are made to show that the power requirements and the initial costs of friction hoists are less than those of conventional drum hoists, once a certain depth of shaft has been reached. The use of multi-rope friction hoists is gradually superseding the employment of the conventional drum hoist in many parts of the world. It results in heavier payloads from deeper levels, an increase in shaft safe-ty and a more compact installation for protection against adverse weather conditions. It was observed that where drums and friction sheaves exceeded 30 feet in diameter, a number of mechanical disadvantages were being experienced;

"The Trout Lake stockwork molybdenum deposit is temporally and spatially related to the emplacement of a late Cretaceous granodiorite-tonalite stock in southeastern British Columbia and contains an estimated 49 million tonnes grading O.I9% MoS2- No metal zonation patterns are apparent, with the exception of peripheral tungsten skarn, and exploration was guided largely by geological interpretation. It is typical of the granodiorite, or fluorine-poor type of molybdenum deposit. Molybdenite is contained within a quartz-feldspar vein stockwork and coeval dissemination in igneous (and less commonly metasedimentary) hosts. In general, molybdenite is strongly associated with alkali feldspars, but in detail it is intimately associated with incipient muscovite replacement of albite and K-feldspar; veins that lack feldspars are also typically barren of molybdenite. These textures suggest that fe/dspathic alteration (and precipitation in veins) was an important precursor to mineralization, and the occurrence of similar textures elsewhere (e.g. Henderson) suggest that early feldspathic alteration is important to the genesis of molybdenum deposits in general. Molybdenite deposition at Trout Lake was preceded by contact metamorphism, skarn and potassic alteration, and was overprinted by muscovite-ankerite (phyllic) alteration. Only moderate temperature changes are recorded by the metamorphic and alteration mineral assemblages (350°C to 450°C}; however, with time, fluids became increasingly more acidic and enriched in C02- In light of the intimate molybdenitemuscovite intergrowths, the decrease of pH probably exerted a major control on mineralization.IntroductionGranite-hosted molybdenum deposits can be classified in terms of the composition of the related intrusion, e.g., the granodiorite and granite types of Mutschler et a!. (1981), or the calc-alkaline, alkali-calcic, and alkalic types of Westra and Keith (1981). They have also been classified on the basis of their fluorine contents (Theodore and Menzie, 1984) with the fluorine-rich and -poor varieties roughly corresponding to granite- and granodiorite-type deposits, respectively. For economic reasons, most exploration and research has concentrated on the high-grade/large tonnage granite-type of deposit, exemplified by Climax. F1uorine-poor, granodiorite-type deposits are, however, the most common type in Canada and have been mined in the past (e.g., Endako). In this paper, the authors summarize the research that has been carried out on the fluorinepoor Trout Lake deposit (Boyle and Leitch, 1983; Linnen, 1985; Linnen and Williams-Jones, 1987; 1990) and use what has been learned to develop guidelines for the future exploration of fluorinepoor, granodiorite-type molybdenum deposits."

Although doubt has been expressed many times as to who first brought self-contained breathing apparatus to this side of the Atlantic, there is none whatever that the first organized station was established at Glace Bay, N .S., by the Dominion Coal Company, in 1907. This station was started with 20 sets of 1907 "Draeger" apparatus and all necessary station equipment and supplies. After the fire at No. 1 pit, Sydney Mines, in 1908, the Nova Scotia Steel Company installed 15 sets of "Draeger" and sup-plies, which were housed in a rescue car (a converted pull-man.) In 1909 or '10 a fire occurred at the Back Pit, Stellarton, where the apparatus from Glace Bay was used, and subsequently the Acadia Company erected a station and in-stalled 10 sets of "Securitas" apparatus. In 1912 the station at New Waterford was opened and equipped with "Draeger," and the same year the station at Springhill was built and equipped with the same type. Sometime during past years the Nova Scotia Steel Company acquired a couple of "Proto" machines, and after the explosion at the Allan shaft in 1918 the Acadia Coal Company added some "Gibbs" to their station. From this it will be seen that when the coal-fields were organized under the British Empire Steel Corporation the equipment was rather mixed, therefore steps were taken by the executive to stanardize the whole of the rescue and recovery work.

"The McMurray formation in the Athabasca oil sands deposits of northern Alberta is part of the world’s second largest proven crude oil reserves. The formation is characterized by stratigraphic layers that correspond to three different depositional environments: Marine, Estuarine, and Fluvial facies. Resource estimation for oil sands has traditionally relied on polygonal and inverse distance schemes. These techniques are simple and straightforward in practice, but they do not permit reliable uncertainty assessment. This paper describes the modelling of the McMurray formation using modern geostatistical techniques.Geostatistical modelling should be performed within homogeneous geological facies. The methodology for geostatistical simulation within each of the identified facies involves: 1) assessing the most appropriate stratigraphic transformation for optimization of the correlation structure; 2) determining representative distributions with declustering and debiasing techniques; 3) modelling spatial continuity of the bitumen grade, fines grade, water saturation, and other petrophysical variables; 4) performing estimation and cross validation as checks against simulation results; 5) performing simulation for uncertainty quantification of bitumen and fines grade; and 6) model checking of simulation results against the input data, and comparisons against the kriged models. These steps are described in detail. The application of these models for uncertainty quantification in support of resource classification is also discussed."

Plant process optimization programs are often costly, both in technical effort and loss of production. Evolutionary Operation or "EVOP" is a mode of plant operation consisting of controlled cyclical changes in process conditions by which information is provided concerning potential process improvements while both volume and quality uniformity in production are maintained. Its conceptual simplicity and low cost of utilization have led to successful adoption in a variety of industrial manufacturing operations. This paper is an expository account of basic EVOP theory, the problems encountered and the organization required in applying it to a processing plant. Illustrations are provided which indicate the payoff that can result.

"Placer Dome Inc. is the operator of the Musselwhite project located 100km north of Pickle Lake, Ontario. J.S. Redpath Limited was contracted to conduct an underground exploration program using shaft access.During the winter of1988, the shaft collar was established in 16 metres of water bearing sand and till overburden. This paper will illustrates the engineering techniques used to overcome the obstacles to installing a shaft collar in deep overburden. Specialized dewatering and piling procedures were employed.INTRODUCTIONHarold and Allan Musselwhite discovered gold in the Opapimiskan Lake area, north of Pickle Lake, in 1962. The prospectors were grubstaked by ten companies in 1973.A diamond drill program was initiated shortly thereafter.In 1983an underground ramp exploration program was carried out on the West Anticline portion of the property. The program was unsuccessful in establishing an ore reserve so surface exploration continued. In 1986the ""T"" zone was discovered. Further surface drilling was done and an over-all drill-indicated reserve of 6 million tonnes at 7 grams per tonne was outlined. The gold mineralization occurs in several vertical tabular deposits within the iron formation. In late 1987the joint venture partnership, now consisting of Placer Dome Inc., Inco Gold Co., Corona Corporation and Esso Minerals Canada, contracted J.S. "PAH compounds have been found in the exhaust from all types of engines burning hydrocarbon fuels . They have also been found in the air over cities and in water. The authors report on a study to assess the concentrations of twelve different PAH compounds in several different environments in dieselized underground mines. In addition, the differences in the PAH levels and distributions in different mines will be demonstrated. Finally, the influence of blasting and the type of diesel engine used as well as the effect of catalytic converters in the exhaust system on the PAH concentration in the mine will be discussed.IntroductionMining methods have been altered significantly in the last 25 years; i.e ., the tools and machinery used underground have changed from electrically operated trains and other equipment to diesel-powered equipment. This has been done for several reasons: 1) economics, 2) convenience and 3) safety. Today, most mines are heavily committed to using diesel equipment.Although the introduction of diesel equipment has revolutionized mining methods and has been a tremendous boon to the mining industry, it has also created new problems. These problems arise because the exhaust from diesel engines contains several pollutants which can be hazardous to the health of the miners. These pollutants are CO2, CO, NO., SO2, oxygenated hydrocarbons produced during the buring process and unburned hydrocarbons. There are two classes of hydrocarbons, of which polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs or PNAs) are a part."

This paper reviews the circumstances that led to the development and construction of a commercial-scale vertical shaft carbonizer at Conmore, Alberta. This form coking process may be regarded as having potential application in other areas. Coal pelletizing offers a promising method of decreasing coal agglomeration costs under certain circumstances. Pellets can be rolled easily from -35-mesh coal, provided that a minimum of -200-mesh coal is present. Bentonite was found to be the best binder and was most effective when added in amounts of about 2 per cent. The water content of the coal pellets was observed to vary from 18 to 23 per cent. As a by-product of this investigation, it seems possible that fine coal could be converted into stoker feed by this process. A short investigation of the effect of heating rate on the carbonization of pellets was conducted. Fe3A1 intermetallics are potential inexpensive candidate for hot applications. In this project, torsion tests on hot-rolled and annealed Fe3A1 (Fe-15.5A1-5.8Cr-1.0Nb¬0.05C) were carried out over the ranges 750-950°C and 0.01~1s-1 . The experimental results showed that when peak stress op>90MPa (LogZ>16s-1 , Z: temperature-compensated strain rate), specimens cracked at randomly low strains. Optical microscopy exhibited original elongated grains and many grain boundary cracks associated with segregation. With op<40MPa (LogZ<16s-&apos;), specimens deformed with low random op but considerably high fracture strains; slowly propagating cracks may explain the reduced flow stress. Optical microscopy showed both elongated grains and equiaxed subgrains with some indications of geometric dynamic recrystallization (gDRX) and of static recrystallization (SRX). Compression tests gave higher stress with little effect of the preexisting cracks. The activation energy Quw of current material in satisfactory torsion and compression tests is about 10% higher than previously published. Fe3A1 has body-centered cubic structure in the experimental range, so it was compared with ferritic stainless steel 434C (Fe- 16.55Cr-0.96Mo-0.21Ni). Constitutive constants and restoration mechanism are compared between these materials. While Fe3A1 is hardly a light metal, it is considerably lighter than most steels. Furthermore, like the other body centered cubic metals (BCC) (a-Fe, ß-Ti, ß-Zr and ß-brass), it exhibits a high degree of dynamic recovery (DRV) like Al alloys, producing easier hot workability than that of austentic stainless steels.

Magnesium is the eighth most abundant element in the earth&apos;s crust, It occurs in nature in sea water, brines, and a number of minerals, Metallic magnesium was first isolated by Humphry Davy (1778-1829) in England in 1808 via electrolysis of anhydrous magnesium chloride with a mercury cathode, Antoine Bussy (1794-1882) in France extracted the metal in 1828 by reducing fused magnesium chloride with metallic po¬tassium vapour, The first industrial production of magnesium by electrolysis of molten carnallite began in 1886 in Hemelingen in Germany, In 1940 Lloyd M, Pidgeon (1903¬1999) in Canada pioneered the first industrial metallothermic magnesium extraction plant based on the reduction of dolomite with ferrosilicon under vacuum, Since then the magnesium industry developed further and a variety of processes are presently used.
