Glacial lake sediments or glaciolacustrine deposits form a significant portion of the Canadian, Scandinavian and Russian landscapes. Furthermore, 50 per cent of the Archean volcanic belts within the Canadian Shield area are covered wholly or in part by these deposits. Because of the high electrical conductivity and low hydraulic conductivity of these compact sediments, the application of geophysical (electrical) and geochemical techniques in such areas becomes a difficult task. The presence of these sediments has therefore hampered exploration for metallic sulphide deposits in some of the most important metallogenic environments of Canada. Similar problems exist in some tropical countries, such as Australia, where the overburden may be very conductive. In this paper, the extent and provenance of the glaciolacustrine deposits within the Canadian Shield are described. The geochemical and geophysical factors that hinder exploration in the clay belts are reviewed, with case histories of successful and unsuccessful applications of some of these techniques. The most successful geochemical technique used within glacial clay belts is the sampling of lodgement till beneath the clay cover, and the analysis of the heavy mineral fraction of that till. Surficial sampling has not been successfully applied. Some geophysical techniques, more specifically electromagnetic and magnetic induced-polarization techniques, have detected mineralization beneath substantially deep clay or saline overburden layers. Some suggestions have been made, such as the use of anions in hydrogeochemical surveys and the use of wide-band multi-frequency EM systems. When implemented, they will hopefully make the current geochemical and geophysical methods more effective in exploration for base metal sulphides within clay-covered terrains.

Over the past decade, the copper industry has been through an extended downturn followed by several years of sustained high copper price. A number of new technologies have been developed over the past 10 years aimed at reducing costs by decreasing energy, labor, and materials requirements, or by increasing metal recovery. The energy intensity of different copper extraction routes and different technologies varies considerably and this has a significant impact on the economics of extraction. Based on average ore grade materials, the total energy for the extraction of copper typically varies from about 24-26 MJ/lb (6.7-7.2 kWh/lb) for the mining, crushing, milling, flotation, smelting and refining route to about 14¬16 MJ/lb (3.9-4.5 kWh/lb) for the mining, crushing, heap leaching, solution extraction and electrowinning route. New technology developments are providing opportunities for significant reductions in energy consumption for copper extraction, representing energy savings up to 20-25% in some cases. In addition, in many cases, these new technologies have introduced environmental, safety and health benefits over the incumbent technology. Some of these technology developments have been more successful than others, and many hold great promise for application in the coming decade. This paper provides an overview of the technology developments that have occurred, and explores the underlying reasons behind successful implementation.

Within the scope the collaborative research centre 599 (Medical University of Hanover, University of Veterinary Medicine Hanover, University of Hanover) the behaviour of the degradation of magnesium materials as implants are investigated by using animal experiments (rabbits). Thus extruded cylindrical pins from the magnesium alloys MgCa0.8%, WE43 and LAE 442 were implanted intramedullary in the tibiadiaphyses. The implantation duration was 3 and 6 month. After the explantation 3 point bending tests were carried out to investigate the possible changes of the mechanical properties. Clearly changes in dependence of the implantation duration could be determined. The three magnesium alloys show a decrease of the mechanical resistance with an increasing implantation time. To evaluate the degradation process, wich is the reason for the changes, micrographs and element analyses (EDX) have been accomplished after the 3 point bending tests. The micrographs show for all used magnesium alloys corroded surfaces but no preferred corrosion on the grain boundarys. The element analyses show beside a layer which is rich in calcium and phosphorus an agglomeration of rare earth elements in this layer. With these results a using of magnesium alloys as a material for implants can be announced.

"The extractive metallurgy of gold is largely controlled by mineralogical factors such as the presence of refractory gold, particle size, gangue mineral associations, presence of preg-robbers, oxygen and cyanide consumers, and locking characteristics in base metal sulphides. Light microscopy and automated mineralogy techniques are regularly used to characterise the effect of these variables on gold recovery. However, despite their widespread application there are a range of limitations when grades are low. Typically, the analysis of low-grade samples requires the preparation and analysis of numerous polished blocks. This is often costly and time consuming, with complexities regarding analysing statistically representative particle quantities and problems overcoming stereological bias. This is compounded by the “nugget” effect and high tenor nature of gold mineralisation. X-ray Microscopy techniques have the potential to overcome many of these problems, in particular the statistical representivity of analysis, removing stereological bias and effectively locating phases that are present in ultra-trace proportions. In this paper we outline the potential benefits of employing X-ray Microscopy (XRM) in characterising gold losses from a typical Cu-Au porphyry project, which were illusive in 2D based analysis. The talk will also outline additional application areas of XRM within the extractive value chain."

Gypsum is mined in all Atlantic Provinces except Prince Edward Island. It is generally thought to have been derived from the hydration of anhydrite in areas of minimal drainage. Late Devonian downwarping and crustal oscillation east of the Appalachian fold belt allowed the Windsor Sea to advance and retreat in a depositional trough and deposit about 1,000 m of sediments in Mississippian time, much of which were evaporites. The best areas for further gypsum development are lowland basins such as the Cape Breton Lowlands, the Hillsborough area of New Brunswick and the St. George's Lowlands in Newfoundland, all of which are already sites of gypsum quarries. Nova Scotia's gypsum is mined from the Lower Windsor Group, which is divided into subzones 'A' and 'B'; 'B' provides most of the province's gypsum production. The Atlantic Provinces gypsum industry has markets from the St. Lawrence waterway to the mouth of the Mississippi River.

The factors affecting the precipitation of arsenic-free alunite (KAl3(SO4)2(OH)6) were investigated in a series of laboratory experiments. Although the amount of alunite precipitated increased with increasing retention time, temperature, solution pH and the concentrations of Al(SO4)1.5 or K2SO4, the composition of the products remained nearly constant. The preferred conditions identified for the precipitation of arsenic-free alunite were then used to assess the behaviour As(III) and As(V) during alunite precipitation at 98°C. Increasing additions of As(III), as NaAsO2 or As2O3, resulted in a slight increase in the amount of precipitate formed at pH 2.80. However, X-ray diffraction analysis showed all the precipitates to be alunite, and <0.2% As(III) was detected in the products. In contrast, increasing additions of As(V), as KH2AsO4 or As2O5, resulted in significant increases in the amount of precipitate formed at pH 2.80 or 3.00. Furthermore, the arsenate (AsO43-) contents of the precipitates increased up to 15%, and the sulphate contents decreased, as the As(V) concentration of the synthesis solution increased from 0 to 9 g/L. X-ray diffraction analysis of the products detected only alunite, but there was a progressive expansion of the alunite cell with increasing arsenate content. The implication is that arsenate substitutes for sulphate in the alunite structure. Preliminary observations on the environmental stability of the arsenate-bearing alunite using the TCLP protocol gave solubilities <0.4 mg/L from a precipitate containing 8.5% AsO4 and 7.8 mg/L from a product containing 19.5% AsO4. Thus, it appears that alunites containing less than -10% AsO4 would be an acceptable vehicle for the disposal of arsenic from hydrometallurgical processing solutions.

The gold deposit of the Lapa mine has a complex mineralogical gold state with coarse and fine native gold, aurostibite and submicroscopic gold within arsenopyrite. A specific mineralogical characterization of the refractory fraction was conducted combining various techniques such as optical microscopy, electron microscopy, electron microprobe and secondary ion mass spectrometry. In parallel, the mineral processing behaviour and the recovery of the refractory gold were studied by pressure oxidation and cyanide leaching. This paper presents the mineralogical methodology developed to characterize the refractory gold distribution within arsenopyrite. These results are presented and interpreted in order to plot gold recovery versus sulphide oxidation. The comparison of the metallurgical behaviour yields predicted from the mineralogical data and the one calculated from leaching tests shows a good agreement and allows mineralogical explanations of the gold metallurgical behaviour.

"The Loss Prevention Program and management style applied at Kidd Creek enabled them to maintain a 1.02/200 000 man-hours accident frequency over a 20-year period. Falconbridge Limited, Kidd Creek Division operates a major zinc, copper, silver mine, two gold mines and a metallurgical facility in Timmins, Ontario. The metallurgical site and the base metal mine are 17 miles apart and joined by their own railroad. The minesite consists of two shafts, one 3000 feet deep and the other to 5200 feet deep, as well as the necessary maintenance and service shops. The metallurgical site consists of a 14 000 STPD concentrator, a zinc refining plant, copper smelter, copper refinery, and the necessary maintenance shops. The two gold mining operations are adjacent to the metallurgical site.At the time of writing this paper the workforce consisted of some 2500 people divided between the two sites. Nine hundred and ninety-two employees are stationed at the minesite, with the remainder at the metallurgical site and gold mines. The workforce in the Timmins operation is non-unionized and reflects the belief that employee interests are well served.Beside providing competitive wages and an excellent benefit package, Kidd Creek takes special pride in its employee relations practices and continued efforts in communication.In each of the programs referred to, there have been equal involvement by both management and the employees. Each crew, under the direction of a supervisor, makes up its own health and safety committee. To maintain a successful Loss Prevention Program, it is essential that management and the employees work closely together and provide meaningful input and effort to succeed.At this point, refer to the lost time injury frequency as a measure of failure and refer to the opposite end of the scale as the measure of success. The ultimate goal of every operating company is to have a zero frequency, therefore denoting 100070 success. The company uses most of the tangible safety aids found in other mining operations, such as safety posters, safety reminders, check lists, and the use of the Neil George Safety System. The difference is the manner and style of management at the Kidd Creek Division. Their ""open door"" policy and the close association, between management and the employees, has always served them well. Also, at Kidd Creek they believe they have a well-trained and dedicated workforce."

Research thrives on ideas, and the theoretical considerations of today are either the discarded notions or the proven facts of tomorrow. The progress made in the past fifty years in the acquisition of knowledge of petroleum geology is no less astounding than is the tremendous increase in the production of oil on the North American continent from 61 million barrels in 1897 to 1,917 million barrels in 1947, an increase of 3,300 per cent, with production of natural gas expanding from less than 400,000 Mcf in 1897 to approximately 4,500,000,000 Mcf, or an increase of 11,000 fold in the same period. In the search for and discovery of the oil and gas fields that have yielded such prolific wealth, no idea has had a more profound effect than has the ?anticlinal? theory of oil accumulation, propounded in 1844 by Sir William Logan, the founder of the Geological Survey of Canada, after noting the position of oil seepages on the crests of anticlines in Gaspe peninsula. Sir William apparently was not much impressed with his own idea at this time, but after the Drake well discovery in 1859 and the publication by Henry D. Rogers, of Glasgow University, formerly of the Pennsylvania Geological Survey, of a paper in which he pointed out that the seepages in Pennsylvania were on anticlines, T. Sterry Hunt, an associate of Sir William Logan on the Geological Survey of Canada, published a reasonably comprehensive statement of the anticlina theory in the Montreal Gazette on March 1st, 1861. Hunt recognized the fact that the oil ?being lighter than the water which everywhere penetrates the rocks below the water level, naturally rises and accumulates along the crown of these anticlines". This was a recognition of the fact that gas, oil, and water in an anticlinal structure separate according to buoyancy or specific gravity. For some years the anticlinal theory does not seem to have attracted much attention, but when I. C. White in 1883 revived it and put it to practical use by prospecting for &apos;anticlinal&apos; oil an gas structures in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Kentucky, its real value not as a theory but as a fact became widely recognized. Even today, the search for anticlines as oil and gas structures is being vigorously continued. In the past fifty years, however, it has become widely recognized that petroleum and natural gas collect in many different types of structures, and these have become known by the general name of &apos;traps&apos;. About 1890, terrace structures were highly regarded because it was thought certain oil fields in Pennsylvania, New York, and Ohio were directly related to them. However, as Wilson (2, p. 437) has pointed out, it is recognized to day that ?&apos;wherever the surface evidence is complete and dependable, other factors (than the terrace structure) are found to be in control&apos;.

"The results of tests carried out on a 3-in. hydrocyclone have shown the linear relationships that exist between: (1) the flow-rate of water in the feed to and the overflow product from the cyclone; (2) the flow-rate of solids in the feed to and the underflow product from the cyclone. The underflow size distribution of an operation has been found to be linear and its usefulness in evaluating particle distribution in the cyclone has been discussed. Effects of design and operating variables on the above relationships have been discussed. The performance of this 3-in. hydrocyclone has been compared with that of a 20-in. cyclone, the results for which are available in the literature."

"Dialkyl dithiophosphinates are a unique class of collectors used in the flotation processing of Cu- Au, complex polymetallic, and precious metal ores. They are known to exhibit higher selectivity and flotation rates for Cu sulfides, galena, and precious metal values in the presence of other gangue sulfides, than the traditionally used collectors such as dialkyl dithiophosphates and xanthates. They also have an attractive HSE profile. Historically, for most reagents used in flotation, practical methods of chemical usage have preceded detailed scientific understanding of how they work; this applies also to dithiophosphinates. Recently, however, the research community has shown significant interest in this chemistry, and numerous studies have been conducted to understand the fundamentals of interactions of dithiophosphinates with several base metal sulfides and precious metals. A critical overview of fundamental studies, laboratory ore flotation, and plant practice of dithiophosphinates is given in this paper. The findings from these studies are rationalized by drawing on concepts and insights from coordination chemistry. A comparison between the interactions of dithiophosphinates and dithiophosphate analogues with various minerals and metals is also made throughout. We believe that such a critical analysis/overview will be invaluable in identifying gaps in knowledge regarding this important set of compounds, which in turn may provide a basis for the design of studies that can advance understanding of their flotation performance. INTRODUCTIONDialkyl dithiophosphinates are an important member of the class of thiophosphorus compounds that are widely used in flotation beneficiation of base metal sulfide and precious metals ores. Ore flotation studies and plant practice experience have demonstrated their unique properties compared to the traditionally used sulfide collectors such as dialkyl dithiophosphates (their closest analogues) and xanthates. The predominant dialkyl dithiophosphinate used in the industry today is sodium diisobutyl dithiophosphinate (a.k.a. DIBDTPi; AEROPHINE® 3418A1 introduced by American Cyanamid in the late 1970s; Figure 1). The widest application of AEROPHINE 3418A is found in complex polymetallic ores of Cu-Pb-Zn-Ag, Pb-Zn-Ag, and Cu-Zn where it has demonstrated improved recoveries (and flotation rates) of sulfide minerals of Cu, Pb and Ag and selectivity against sphalerite, iron sulfides, and penalty elements (Mingione, 1991). More recently, it has also been used as a collector in the processing of Cu, Cu-Ni, and Ni ores (Guitard et al., 2015) and Cu-Au ores (Dunne, 2005). In general, it is considered to possess the collecting power of xanthates together with the selectivity (against pyrite) of dithiophosphates (Hope et al., 2003a, 2003b), while requiring lower dosages than those reagents (Guitard et al., 2015). AEROPHINE® 3418A has also found an important place in several targeted formulations to improve flotation performance. Other benefits of this reagent include higher flotation rates, having a better HSE (health, safety and environmental) profile2 compared to xanthate, and exhibiting resistance to hydrolysis and oxidation (Guitard et al., 2015). Compared to diisobutyl dithiophosphate (DIBDTP), which is known to contribute significantly to frothing (often leading to over-frothing), AEROPHINE® 3418A is observed to be froth neutral (i.e. it does not alter the existing froth characteristics). As is the case for other flotation reagents, the design and application of AEROPHINE® 3418A has preceded understanding of its behavior at a fundamental level. Recently, there have been numerous fundamental and application studies designed to develop a better understanding of its interaction with sulfide minerals and precious metals. THE DEFINITION of the continental margin, as considered in this paper, is in the broad sense: " ... those provinces of the continents and of the oceans which are associated with the boundary between these two first-order features of the earth" (Heezen et aL, 1959, p. 17). The provinces in the area under con-sideration are: the Continental Shelf, the Continental Slope and the Continental Rise. The Continental Shelf extends from the shoreline to the shelf break, which lies at approximately the 200-meter isobath through-out the region (except north of the Grand Banks, where the break may be defined more properly by the 400-meter isobath). The Continental Slope and Rise occur between the shelf break and the 4,000-meter isobath. (The last figure was somewhat arbitrarily selected for the purpose of this paper.) The Atlantic Continental Margin as thus defined extends along the eastern coast of Canada from the International Boundary in the Gulf of Maine northward to approximately the 60°N latitude off the coast of Labrador. The area of study amounts to at }east 500,000 square miles -an area roughly equivalent to 13 per cent of Canada's total land surface.

Falcon centrifugal gravity separation tests were conducted to study desulfurization and de-ashing performance with different size fractions of a high-sulfur Chinese -0.5mm fine coal in a dense medium. Performance indicators such as combustible recovery, ash and sulfur rejection, and desulfurization efficiency were used to evaluate the separation efficiency. The results show that for -0.5 mm coal particles, all performance indicators except ash rejection are higher for the Falcon concentrator than for flotation. More specifically, for the +0.125 mm size fraction, Falcon centrifugal separation produced better ash and sulfur rejection performance than froth flotation. However, the Falcon concentrator also showed higher combustible recovery but lower ash and sulfur rejection than froth flotation for the -0.125 mm size fraction.

In general, knowledge of the state of stress within the Antarctic lithosphere remains largely unconstrained due in part to Antarctica?s inaccessibility and because of the paucity of seismic focal mechanism solutions. As such, an important component of the ANDRILL project was to acquire new information on the stress directions and magnitudes within the upper crust. Extensive fracture mapping of the core and oriented ultrasonic televiewer logging were carried out to provide strong constraints on both stress orientations and the faulting regime. The first hydraulic fracturing stress determinations in Antarctica were also carried out to provide complimentary stress magnitudes. These measurements were accomplished using a wire-line transported hydraulic fracturing system consisting, essentially, of two synthetic polymer packers that were inflated to isolate the 1-m long pressurization interval. The tests were conducted at the end of the drilling and logging in a ~130-m section specially drilled below 1000 mbsf (nearly 1500 m from the rig floor) for hydraulic fractures. This zone was drilled primarily through competent, dense, and low permeability diamicts. The core fracture and televiewer logging information was used to site twenty separate measurements. Classic hydraulic fracturing pressurization records with unambiguous breakdown and fracture closure pressures were obtained in about half of the measurements. The remaining tests provided fracture propagation and closure pressures that are consistent with the classic breakdown curves, but they did not include a clear breakdown pressure and are indicative of the reopening of either natural or drilling induced fractures in the wellbore wall. The preliminary analysis of the results are in generally good agreement with the stress directions indicated by the core fracture logging and the stress regime suggested by the character of the drilling induced core fractures.

"Grinding tests were conducted on an oxidized copper-cobalt ore using a pear-shaped ball mill. Twelve mono-sized ore fractions were prepared and wet ground batchwise. The mill was run for 0.5 to 30 min intervals. The shortest interval provided data more closely related to the breakage function (B) because less secondary breakage was hypothesized. Some selection function (S) and B parameters were determined. Remaining parameters were estimated using a population balance model simulator. To evaluate the kinetics model, an unsized ore sample was also milled. Predicted and measured particle size distributions (PSDs) agreed well, suggesting that S and B parameters can be used for continuous operation mass balances.RÉSUMÉ Des essais de broyage ont été menés sur un minerai oxydé de cuivre-cobalt à l’aide d’un broyeur à boulets piriforme. Douze fractions de minerai de dimension unique ont été préparés et broyés en voie humide en lots. Le broyeur était mis en route à des intervalles de 0,5 à 30 minutes. L’intervalle le plus court fournissait des données plus étroitement liées à la fonction d’abattage (B) car d’après l’hypothèse avancée, le besoin d’abattage secondaire était moindre. INTRODUCTIONSize reduction of solids is a very energy intensive and highly inefficient process. It consumes approximately 5% of the electricity produced worldwide (Rhodes, 1998), and more than 50% of the total energy used in mineral processing plants (Walkiewicz, Lindroth, & Clark, 1996). An increase in grinding efficiency can therefore result in significant reductions in operating costs. This often amounts to determining the optimal design configurations for milling an ore sample in a laboratory mill under standard conditions. Prior to optimizing the milling stage, the requirements for downstream processing in terms of particle size distribution (PSD) need to be understood because low liberation and overgrinding will lead to future problems. Once this is done, it is also important to clearly understand the breakage properties of the ore. The kinetics of size reduction in tumbling mills are often determined using two probabilistic functions: selection and breakage (Austin & Luckie, 1972). Knowledge of the selection and breakage functions also enables the prediction of the PSD for a given ore sample."

The PyEarth™ process developed at Mintek has been demonstrated successfully at pilot scale. Nine tons of ore containing 2.3 mass % of total rare earth oxides (TREO) from a dormant mineralogically complex iron-rich ore deposit, was subjected to a concentrating smelting step in a 200 kW DC open-arc pilot furnace and the rare earths from the resulting slag were extracted via a hydrometallurgical route. This ore deposit is practically not amenable to extraction by conventional methods. The testwork results proved that the PyEarth™ process was able to optimize the extraction of rare earths while minimizing waste through the removal of iron as a saleable iron alloy. Reduction of iron to the alloy in the smelting step was found flexible, efficient, and controllable, while rare earths were left virtually unreduced in the slag phase. The slag chemistry is selected to optimize both the smelting and leaching performances as well as the alloy composition. Leaching of the resulting slag was found possible and most efficient in hydrochloric acid amongst other lixiviants tested.

The town of Hedley is some 200 miles due east of Vancouver and lies in the bottom of the Similkameen River valley, at the junction of Twenty Mile creek, at about the 1,700-foot elevation above sea level. The Nickel Plate mine camp is on Nickel Plate mountain at an elevation of about 5,600 feet, four miles slightly east of north from Hedley, to which it is connected by 9 miles of road, and by 10,000 feet of tramway and electric railway. The latter is used both to transport the ore to the 275-ton mill at Hedley and to furnish the mine with supplies. History The Nickel Plate claim was staked in 1898 to cover the sole outcrop of the Nickel Plate system of orebodies. Soon afterwards it was optioned by the Marcus Daly interests of Butte and underground exploration commenced. Early exploration was successful, and a power plant, tramway, and mill were constructed. The mill began operations in 1904. Production under Daly control ensued from June, 1904, to August, 1909, and amounted to 167,000 tons. The Hedley Gold Mining Company was organized and commenced operations in 1909. The capacity of the mill was increased by stages to 200 tons and a steady production, except for short periods in winter, was maintained until 1930. By 1930, gold to the value of nearly $10,000,000 had been produced since the discovery in 1898. The South American Development Company optioned the property in 1932. Active exploration was conducted during 1933 and 1934 by the Kelowna Exploration Company, a subsidiary of the South American Development Company. This work was sufficiently successful that, coupled with the increase in the price of gold from $20.67 to $35.00 per ounce, production re-commenced in December, 1934, and continued uninterrupted until July, i946, when, along with all B.C. gold mines, a strike closed operations. The rapid expansion of exploration drilling with anticipated production facilities for oil and gas in the Mackenzie Delta region of the Northwest Territories has created a demand for granular construction materials. This paper discusses the technique adopted and experience gained by the authors from several major resource evaluation programs in this remote area. The first part of the paper describes a methodology for deposit identification, logistics of helicopter and ground-based drilling operations and the sampling difficulties which are unique to permafrost: soils. The second part describes the exploitation of a large glaciofluvial deposit at YaYa Lake on Richards Island. Granular construction material is sparse in the delta region relative to projected demand. Exploitable sources of granular materials for aggregates or construction borrow are found in glaciofluvial deposits of Pleistocene age or in outcrops of Paleozoic bedrock. Glaciofluvial landforms can be located by reference to published surficial geology maps coupled with airphoto interpretation. Preliminary assessment of these features in a large region is most economically carried out during the summer months with a drill that is transportable by helicopter. Once prospective borrow pit sites are identified, a detailed ground-based winter drilling program must be undertaken to establish aggregate quality and quantity, and to provide information on natural features which could affect development. The glaciofluvial terrain has been highly modified by the formation of massive ground ice within the gravel deposits. This presents some unique pit development problems which are not encountered in a normal bedrock quarry operation.

Initiated and financed by the Canadian Space Agency, Micro-Rover Platform with Tooling Arm (MRPTA) project has targeted the development of a robotic system with remote control and autonomous navigation capabilities for testing a large variety of analogous planetary missions. Although developed for planetary exploration, the navigation system is highly suitable to such areas of application as construction and in mining. Autonomous navigation system is capable of moving the platform to predefined position(s)/orientation(s) while continuously mapping the terrain, assessing its traversability and choosing most appropriate path to follow. Designed according to the JAUS (Joint Architecture for Unmanned Systems) framework, the system consists of several interconnected components. Following components are of particular importance: Pose Estimator (PE), Terrain Evaluator (TE), Map Manager (MP), and Path Planner (PP). The PE uses a minimal sensor configuration consisting of an azimuth gyroscope, inclinometer and wheel odometry. The PE provides reliable pose estimates in spite of pronounced slippage by employing extensive use of fused data. The TE uses a nodding laser scanner which continuously sweeps the area in front of the platform and constructs a ?traversability grid? (TG) of the surrounding area. Multiple TGs are constantly constructed along the platform motion path are combined into a terrain map maintained by the MP. The PP uses this map to compute a motion path Obtained path is executed by the motion controller and remains current until it is contradicted by the most recent map ? at which point it is re-planned. This paper addresses integration issues, lessons learned and also outlines the possible applications for construction and mining.
