"The recovery of additions in light metals is an important parameter influencing consistency of the finished product, which ultimately means cost. Recovery is a function of many parameters such as assimilation speed, addition density, addition practice, liquid metal processing conditions, etc. In liquid metal processing operations, it is desirable to have the maximum possible recovery at the shortest possible time.In this paper a new index will be presented, namely, the rate of recovery (RR). This index quantifies the addition recovery and introduces the time dimension in the recovery increase. As such, the RR equips the liquid metal practitioner with an accurate picture of addition assimilation in liquid metals. Results will be presented on how this index is applied to a variety of additions in liquid aluminum. IntroductionThe data on addition assimilation kinetics offer a valuable parameter describing how fast a given addition enters the metal bath. These data may be expressed as gr m-2 s-1 of additive for a set of experimental conditions which might include bath temperature and degree of bath agitation among others. However, the liquid metal processing practitioner is more interested in the recovery of additions. In other words, the point of interest is the percentage of the used addition entering the metal bath. Ideally, the addition recovery can reach the 100% level. However, in practice, the addition recovery never or rarely reaches that level. Many factors can contribute to this. Some of these factors can be slow assimilation kinetics, addition density, addition practice, turbulence of the melt, etc. In some cases, sloppy addition practices can contribute to low recoveries, or even worse, to erratic recoveries.In this paper a new parameter is introduced. This parameter relates the maximum addition recovery observed over the time needed to achieve this maximum recovery."

"An economical, pollution-free process has been developed for the hydrometallurgical extraction of copper from sulphide ores. The extracted copper, in the form of cuprous chloride (CuC/), is converted by reduction to copper metal. The metal is melted and fire -refined into wire bars which meet the standards of electrolytic tough pitch (ETP) copper wirebars. IntroductionThe successful development of the Cyprus Copper Process has been an evolutionary series of events covering a time span of some nine years. The original process, based on an electrolytic membrane cell principle , was abandoned in 1975 because of technical, economic and pollution problems. During the past four years, the pilot plant has been reconstructed based on a new flowsheet and operated successfully in several campaigns, some for as long as four months. The pilot-plant hydro section operates at a 225-lblhr copper rate. In October 1977, a feasibility study was completed by Jacobs Engineering, Pasadena, California. The study showed favourable economic and technical feasibility. Jacob's studies in 1978-79 revealed favourable comparative economics with other known pyrohydro processes and favourable economies of scale.The Cyprus Copper Process converts copper concentrates of varying composition into copper metal, which has been proven to be equivalent in every way to electrolytic tough pitch copper, suitable for electrical applications. This is accomplished at capital and operating costs which are estimated to be lower than those associated with any other known currently applicable technology. Also, the total energy requirement is equal to or less than any other known process and the process is essentially pollution free."

"Brunswick Mining has investigated grinding media optimization for the purpose of improving the flotation feed and regrind product size distributions to enhance metal recoveries. This paper presents the findings of on-going testing of various sizes and shapes of grinding media. Plant observations combined with estimated breakage rates demonstrate the importance of appropriate selection of media sizes on the milling operation.IntroductionBrunswick Mining and Smelting is located near Bathurst, New Brunswick, and operates one of the world's largest lead and zinc mines. The ore mineralogy and processing flowsheet have been described elsewhere (Petruk and Schnarr, 1981; Shannon et 01., 1993). Despite the 25 years' milling experience, there has been considerable disagreement as to the required grind size (Grant et 01., 1991). Since 1964, fineness of the flotation feed ranged from 60% to 80% passing 400 mesh (37 um) and averaged slightly above 71% in 1992. Results from mineralogical analysis (Petruk and Schnarr, 1981), laboratory and pilot plant experiments, as well as plant sampling (Grant et al., 1991; Hendriks and Ounpuu, 1985; Shannon et al., 1993) indicate that improved metal recoveries can be achieved by an increase in the fineness of grind, and more specifically by maximizing the amount of material in the 15 urn to 25 um range.This paper shows the results obtained so far from the evaluation of the effect of grinding media size and shape on grinding mill efficiency. The problem of finding optimum grinding media size, shape and composition has been recogrtized since the early 19405. The main criterion for the selection of media size is the size of the material to be ground (Bond, 1958). Although several relationships have been proposed to assist in the selection of grinding media size, none of them are entirely satisfactory (Wills, 1988). Other approaches using the breakage rates and process simulators were developed to help in the selection of grinding media size (Austin et al., 1976; Lo and Herbst, 1986; Concha et 01., 1992; Samskog et al., 1990; Martinovic et al., 1990). Although considerable effort was put into the analysis of grinding media size, very little information is available on the effect of grinding media shape (Norman and Decker, 1985, p. 3C-4). Norris (1952), Kelsall et al. (1973) and Herbst and Lo (1989) have shown that balls are more efficient than other shapes of grinding media including truncated cones and cubes."

Extraction of gold and other metals from ores suspended in liquid slurries often involves gases (such as oxygen) as a participant in the reaction. An important factor then in setting the rate of extraction can be mass transfer of the gas into the liquid and/or solids. A number of recent studies have indicated that as solids loadings increase, mass transfer rates of gas into solid-liquid mixtures decreases. This would seem to imply that lower solids loadings would be beneficial to increased reaction rates. However, since it is the solids which are being reacted, a most intriguing paradox is created. More solids should lead to more surface area to react, but it seemingly also provides less gas to react. So is the reaction faster or slower as solids loadings increases? The creation of this paradox is imbedded in how mass transfer and reaction data is collected and measured, how it is analyzed and correlated, and finally on the rate controlling steps in the reaction. An alternative analysis of these studies is presented which clarifies and eliminates the paradox. The analysis applies to water slurries as used in gold or other metal leaching processes or in bio-hydrometallurgy, as well as to molten metal/solid/gas mixtures such as might be encountered in submerged gas injection.

Safety performance in many companies and even industries has stalled in the few years. Accidents rates are at a ?plateau? and yet, serious accidents and fatality rates are not. In more dramatic cases, such as in the BP Texas disaster, organizations that have ?exemplary? safety statistics, suddenly have a catastrophic or multi-fatality event occurring. Other classic examples are the Piper Alpha disaster and NASA?s Challenger and Columbia disasters and even the Chernobyl nuclear reactor. Looking into the root causes of these accidents provides an insight into the events and deficiencies that led up to the accident, but what are the common features in the organization?s mindset? What characterizes these organizations? decision making, their approach to safety and to risk and are there specific cultural features that can be delineated? The research and review presented in this paper covers a period since 1994, which started in the Australian resource industry and since then covered international events. The features of these organizations are summarized as the seven deadly delusions, based on extensive research since 1997 of organizations that suffered unexpected disasters. Their huge focus on safety, the achievement of lofty goals and celebration of safety successes led to ?mindset? that they are leaders in safety, protected by an extraordinary safety system and that their safety incident figures indicated a truly world-class safety performance. It led them into the trap of the seven deadly delusions?

TAXATION has become a major item in the operation of Canadian mines, and, as such, merits our most serious consideration. I feel it was a splendid idea for the Institute to set aside this time for a frank discussion of this important subject, and believe great benefit will result from a better understanding of the methods and underlying principles involved. Mining, as a great national industry, may quite properly be called upon to pay its fair share of the cost of running the country; and there is no tendency on our part to avoid this responsibility. There is, however, a very definite demand that the proportion be just, and fairly and sensibly applied. I believe that Mr. C. G. Williams, Secretary of the Canadian Metal Mining Association, and others, are giving details of the various Provincial and Dominion regulati6ns, so I shall not touch on that phase of the situation. However, there are some important factors to which I should like very briefly to call your attention. The first is the vital need for stability. As you all know, a considerable period must elapse between the preliminary stages of any mining venture and the time when it comes to production-or is finally abandoned as un-profitable. These early days are fraught with many unavoidable uncertainties. If, to these natural hazards, the apprehension of instability of governmental action be added, the risk becomes so great that capital seeks other and safer fields for investment, and many otherwise promising projects are thus discarded. There probably never has been a time in recent years when so much money was seeking investment as now. Under favourable conditions, the development of our great mineral resources would be a natural and attractive outlet for this money. The amount of taxation which the mining industry can properly absorb is of the utmost importance at this time, and it might be well to consider this question in its relation to the economic stability of our country, for it cannot be too greatly emphasized that direct taxation is only one item in the net return which our governments derive from the mining industry. Indeed, the many indirect benefits are so manifest that it would seem almost unnecessary to enumerate them! We almost invariably think of mine taxation as a direct company tax-overlooking the fact that sales tax, customs duties, acreage tax, income tax on mine dividends, foreign shareholders' dividend tax, and others, must all be taken into consideration. It would seem that the economic value of non-ferrous metal mining in Canada is not sufficiently understood and appreciated.

"Today's demand for better and more efficient methods inspires new approaches to construction and mine development.A project at Asarco's Aquarius Mine provided a challenge that resulted in the adaptation of a civil construction technique to a mining application.This paper describes the construction of an escapeway shaft to surface from the mine's 150m level. The prime consideration was to provide the most cost-effective method of establishing a shaft collar in the 145 ft (44 m) of water-bearing overburden. This problem was resolved with the employment of the drilled in-caisson method.The remainder of the 500ft (152m) deep shaft was raise bored and portable hoisting equipment was used to install a permanentmanway and shaft liner.IntroductionHaving completed the first phase of exploration development in 1982, J.S. Redpath Limited was engaged to carry out an engineering and cost study to investigate the feasibility of re-opening Asarco's Aquarius Mine near Timmins, Ontario. The scheme was to develop the proven ore reserves and proceed with shrinkage stoping while carrying out further exploration development and diamond drilling.One significant and costly component of the project was the provision of an escapeway shaft to supply additional ventilation as well as a second means of egress from the mine. The major complication to this task was the presence of 145 ft (44 m) of water-bearing overburden at the site. The first and obvious approach was to use conventional ground-freezing methods as had been employed previously on .this property for the initial development shaft. This being the only ""sure"" method available at the time of the budget estimate, it was used as a basis for the study but its considerable projected cost and time demand inspired further investigation into other possible solutions.After considerable research and several brainstorming sessions, a Redpath team came up with an approach whose basic procedures had been used extensively in the civil construction field, although they were novel to the mining industry."

"Selbaie is located northwest of Joutel, in what is known as the fourth east-west volcanic sediment group in northwestern Quebec. The main metals produced are copper and zinc, with important contents of both silver and gold. Production comes from an open pit mine on the A-I zone and from two underground mines on the B zone and the A-2 zone. Each mine gave rise to important capital investment programs for construction and mine development, all of which were managed and staffed with company-hired, non-union personnel. Production from all sources now exceeds 7000 tonnes per day, with a workforce of540 regular employees. Of particular interest technically is the high recovery of B zone reserves underneath 40 m of overburden cover, the low-cost capital development of the A-2 zone, the computerized control of open pit mining, and the successful copper-zinc separation of the A-1 zone ore. Due to the low grades of the mineral deposits, efficiency in all aspects of the production process, is essential to the success of the operation.LocationThe Selbaie Mine is located 82 km northwest of the locality of Joutel in northwestern Quebec (Fig. 1). Access to the mine is by an all-weather road, 32 km of which is paved. A second road access to the site is via La Sarre, 134km to the southwest. Employee access, materials transport and haulage of copper and zinc concentrates take place over both of these roads."

A mineral processing facility near Montreal, CEZinc, Noranda Inc., has recently implemented a leading-edge intranet solution for monitoring the performance of plant operations, and providing condition-based maintenance. This innovative multi-faceted software implementation incorporates: web-delivered plant information systems; area-wide control loop performance assessment (using sophisticated algorithms to evaluate poorly performing controllers); and integrated alarm management functions.The system has enabled a project to improve plant operations through better process control. Maintenance technicians, engineers, supervisors and managers all can see the performance of the controllers, and the performance of the plant itself, through webdelivered graphics and reports. Information is combined from many sources, real-time, historical, relational and analytical, to provide a complete picture of plant operation.The web-based solution centralizes the administration of user access, and simplifies the deployment of several different kinds of information to many desktops. "Grande Cache Coal (GCC), an investor-owned Alberta company, is in the final stages of the regulatory process leading to the resumption of coal mining in the Smoky River Coal Field of Alberta. Although many opportunities for low-cost, high-yield mining remained on the property, GCC opted for a long-term production plan that ensures stability for the local economy, sustainable use of the resources in the area, environmental responsibility and a satisfactory return for its investors.GCC entered the Alberta coal approval process in late 2000 with a public disclosure document. In October 2001, GCC formally submitted an application for mining approval and an environmental impact assessment (EIA) to the government and the public. The application covered the proposed Grande Cache Coal project, which includes the No. 7 underground mine, No. 8 surface mine and coal processing operations. The EIA provided a comprehensive investigation of environmental sensitivities in the project area, matched with environmental protection programs. The project is based on commencement of operations in late 2002. GCC’s plans are founded on a commitment to sustainable development and has framed this commitment in the context of a long-range mine development plan that will sustain the community of Grande Cache over the next 25 years. The Grande Cache coalfields offer extensive coal reserves and opportunities, for both surface and underground mining. Combining highly productive U.S.-style room and- pillar underground mining methods and conventional truck-and-shovel open pit mining, GCC’s approach to sustainable development encompasses community involvement and reclamation of mine sites to productive land uses after mining."

"Autoclaves have been in commercial use in the mining industry since the early 1950's the initial applications included tin, uranium, cobalt, nickel and copper extraction under both acidic and alkaline conditions. These circuits varied in batch or continuous operation. The geometry has been spherical, vertical, and horizontal type with up to six agitators, with throughput as high as 1000 stpd.Presently autoclaves are a good process selection for many refractory sulphide gold bearing ores. The first application of pressure oxidation in the gold industry was at the Homestake Mcglaughlin's Mine which was commissioned in 1985. This was an acidic pressure oxidation process treating 3000 stpd in three four compartment horizontal autoclaves 14' diameter and 53' long. Since the initiation of autoclaves for the treatment of gold bearing sulphides, there are presently 16 gold autoclaves operating worldwide varying in size up to 18'4"" inside diameter. There are seven autoclaves for the treatment of refractory sulphide gold bearing ores to be commissioned in 1997 and 1998.Autoclave technology has progressed extensively since the mid-eighties. Operational experience has made rapid progress and the result is much smoother and safer autoclave operation. There have been many advances in autoclave technology design. For example, the use of exotic materials for corrosion resistance to reduce down time for maintenance. The instrumentation involved in autoclave operation is very sophisticated which allows for many safety features. The advanced design has allowed for greater availability and as a result operating costs and maintenance costs have decreased. These technological advancements have made autoclave technology more safe and this has resulted in a greater acceptance of this type of operation. Many of the gold autoclave facilities operate up to 9 months continuously without shutdowns. The advancement of autoclave technology has inspired many new applications.Because of the outstanding operation of autoclaves in the gold industry, many other applications for autoclave technology are being considered. Porphyry copper ores are frequently a source of low-grade gold ore, but gold in these ores is often associated with significant levels of cyanide-soluble copper. Cyanide leaching of such ores increases flowsheet complexity and operating costs, and requires thorough planning to satisfy environmental requirements for tailings disposal and mine closure. This paper presents a review of the chemistry of cyanide leaching of gold-copper porphyry ores, carbon adsorption phenomena and means of removing base metals from leach solution. The primary economic drivers behind the processing of such complex ores are also analyzed.

Recently, the great amount of funds has been invested in the reconstruction of damaged infrastructure and house of subsidence area of coal mine and mine reclamation. This is a benevolent and popular work, which is highly praised. However, because of complicated collapse area problems in China, especially the less integrated control research in the collapse area of metal mine, and the technological weakness, how to effectively control the subsidence area, restore landscape and ecological environment, and utilize the abandoned mine land, are major issue related to the mining area of sustainable development. The research situation about the formation of metal mine collapse area at home and abroad is reviewed, and then the effect of the collapse area on the mine safety and ecological environment, the existing technical problems and development direction are analyzed. Lastly, the technical measures of the collapse area control and cooperative underground mining is put forward.

By incorporating a polymer with steel, improvement of rope life and reduction of costly maintenance downtime has been accomplished.IntroductionThe Williams Mine is Canada's largest gold producer with an annual production of some 500 000 ounces of gold from 2.2 million tonnes of ore. The Williams Mine is situated in the Hemlo area of northwestern Ontario, approximately 40 Ian east of the town of Marathon. It is operated by the Williams Operating Corporation which is owned equally by Teck Corporation and Homestake Canada Inc. It is one of three adjacent properties forming the Hemlo gold camp."

The future is here ? or at least that?s what Mine Planners predicted some 15 years ago ? that by 2004 we would have man-less mines running themselves using space-aged technology. Truthfully, though, there hasn?t been much change in mining methods in the past decade, but thankfully that?s all about to change. The benefits of autonomous ? even Tele-operated mining (especially in narrow-vein ore bodies) are wellknown: increased production hours by eliminating travel time to and from the face, continuous production at the face while crews screen and bolt behind the working equipment, less liability for workers? safety in certain areas, etc. But when plans are put in place to accomplish this vision, things stagnate and production carries on as before. This paper examines the components necessary to make that vision a reality. First we?ll detail the technology required to enable Tele-operation ? even autonomous operation of mining machinery, then we?ll look at what?s wrong with the current way we?re mining, and finally conclude with a critique of the machinery itself.

"The tungsten-bismuth-molybdenum deposit in southwestern New Brunswick occurs in greisenized and silicified tuffite * and feldspar porphyry in and adjacent to volcanic necks. The ore minerals occur as veins and veinlets and as disseminated grains in gangue. These minerals can be grouped into three assemblages. Assemblage 1 consists of oxides and phosphates of W, Ti, Fe, Nb, Sn, Ta and rare-earth elements, with the main minerals being deposited in the sequence wolframite, rutile, cassiterite. Assemblage 2 consists of arsenopyrite, molybdenite and bismuth, and assemblage 3 of sulphides with minor cassiterite and arsenopyrite. Sphalerite is the main sulphide mineral, but it contains minute inclusions of copper-tin- and indium-bearing minerals. Textural relations suggest that most of the elements can be recovered from this ore by conventional mineral beneficiation and extraction methods, but a variety of techniques must be employed. It is expected that the wolframite and molybdenite can be recovered satisfactorily, but poor recoveries are expected for bismuth and cassiterite. A sphalerite concentrate can be readily obtained by flotation, but it would contain a wide variety of elements. It is suggested that leaching be used to recover the bismuth and the elements in the sphalerite concentrate."

Different management options and rehabilitation strategies are available for mine wastes that produce acid mine drainage (AMD). One of them consists in building a cover with capillary barrier effects (CCBE) on the tailings to limit the availability of oxygen, an essential component of the chemical reactions leading to the generation of AMD. Prior to cover construction, a monitoring strategy must be established to evaluate the response and performance of the cover system. The key parameters to monitor should include matric suction and volumetric water content in the CCBE, oxygen flux (and/or oxygen concentration) through and below the cover, and the main meteorological parameters for the impoundment. In this paper, different techniques available to measure the targeted parameters are described and their main properties are given. Recommendations (based on existing cases) on the location and the number of monitoring stations and on the measurement frequency for each monitored parameter are also proposed.

Rock mechanics engineers must provide ground support designs that ensure a safe underground working environment. Unexpected falls of ground are unacceptable while ground support systems must be adequate. Ground support must be economic for the area supported and the time frame the opening is in use. While numerical modeling can be used for ground support design, empirical models are still the common useful design tools. Empirical models are best developed and improved from local experiences although some models, such as Stability Graph (Potvin et al, 1992), are in extensive use by the Canadian mining industry. To determine the adequacy of ground support practices at HBMS, a database of 50 fall of ground case histories between 1985 and 2001 was compiled. For each failure, the recorded data included: location, rock type, rock mass conditions, opening and failure geometry, installed ground support and failure mechanism. An analysis of the database was done to obtain an understanding of failure frequency association with rock types, stope geometry and installed ground support, and to assess what support design changes were necessary. The paper describes changes made to ground support and mining practices during the last five years, and the formation of new ground support standards and practices which have been successful in reducing ground falls while providing improved, efficient and economical ground support.
