This Is not a highly technical paper, but rather an attempt to give a general outline of coal mining for the benefit of those present who may have little or no experience in the industry, and is intended to give some general knowledge which may help to a better understanding of the problems of the industry. A knowledge of the disposition of workable material is necessary to give a comparison with other mining practices. Coal Is usually found in comparatively fiat seams of varying thickness, whereas other minerals are generally found in highly inclined lodes of variable width. However, even in comparatively flat seams unaffected by faulting, grades can, and do, vary greatly over short distances.This variation causes many local problems in working the small area affected. Even very steep seams, and some are much steeper than 1 in 1, vary considerably not only in grade, but also in direction of grade and level course. This is probably caused by folding during alteration of the shape and form of the basins after deposition.These swellies are common to most coal seams and vary only in extent. This type of variation in grade and direction of grade, while common to most ore bodies, is a matter of great importance in coal mining when it is considered that roadways are driven in the seam itself and have to be graded and made suitable for haulage purposes.The area of ground involved in an individual coal mining operation is often very large; many times larger than most metal mining propositions, and often comprises many thousands of acres.When it is considered that the specific gravity of coal may be only one-fifth of that of some ores mined, and the coal seam may be five or six feet in thickness, the vastness of the area necessary for continuous mining operations over many years will be realised.To achieve comparable outputs, with about five times the bulk of material to handle, much more ground and working places must...

The Ore Reserve/Exploration System implemented at Mount Isa for M.I.M. Holdings Limited is a comprehensive computer system designed to process assay, geological, structural and survey data input via special purpose logging sheets from daily activities at Isa Mine, Hilton Mine and various Carpentaria Exploration Company prospects. The system performs two basic functions; (1) data acquisition, validation and file maintenance to prepare the data for retrieval, and (2) generation of routine and optional reports. The types of reports available range from masterfile detail printouts and retrieval of data by key items to survey computations, structural analyses, cutoff calculations, statistical analyses and ore reserve calculations by the polygonal, inverse square or moving average techniques. The use of various optional reports available through the system is illustrated by several examples, and planned future development is discussed.

The Palaeozoic succession of Victoria contains one of the world's major gold provinces with a total production of 2500 tonnes of gold. Larger deposits, including Bendigo (over 800 tonnes Au), are related to Ordovician slates and greywackes, but a wide range of metamorphosed sedimentary and igneous rock types are host to significant gold deposits. Most, if not all, deposits demonstrate structural control, although the controlling structural features are variable between deposits: a majority of deposits comprise quartz veins. It is suggested here that a major factor in making Victoria such a gold-rich province might be a particularly high geothermal gradient in central Victoria during the Tabberabberan orogeny (360-380 my). This generated auriferous metamorphic fluids from underlying successions (?Cambrian) which migrated upwards along active structural pathways. One cause of gold deposition appears to have been fluid reduction by carbon, but other methods are suspected. This model is considerably simpler than the plethora of syngenetic, granite magmatic and lamprophyre-related models that have been proposed recently, but is in basic agreement with Cox et al. (1983). Exploration models for similar gold deposits both within Victoria and elsewhere should take account of the negligible evidence for a major syngenetic contribution to Victorian gold production, and the lack of any clear genetic relationship to particular igneous rock types. A real opportunity exists for new deposit types not identified by the early prospectors.

Vatukoula, the Fijian equivalent of gold rock, is the name of the community embracing the gold mines owned and operated by Emperor Gold Mining Company Ltd., Loloma (Fiji) Gold Mines, N.L., and' Dolphin Mines Ltd. It is situated in the Tavua Goldfields approximately five miles from the northern coast of Viti Levu, the largest island of the Colony of Fiji.The climate is sub-tropical, there being a definite wet and dry season. The wet season is somewhat variable in length but usually extends from December to March, during which time most of the rainfall for the year is recorded.Although the average annual rainfall is 71 in., more than twice this amount has been recorded. Precipitation at the rate of 5 in. per hour is not uncommon and 15 in. of rain has been registered in 24 hours. The mining methods adopted, therefore, had to suit these wet conditions.The occurrence of gold in the Tavua area has been known since 1872, but it was not until 1932 that discoveries were made which led to the formation of the present operating companies. In 1934 the Emperor Gold Mining Company Ltd. commenced operations, followed in 1935 by the Loloma (Fiji) Gold Mines, N.L., and later by the Fiji Mines Development Ltd., now known as the Dolphin Mines Ltd. Of all of the processes in the mining cycle, blasting has the greatest impact on the efficiency of both mining itself and the initial stages of ore processing. The cost of blasting can be readily accounted for, but the true benefits of an effective blasting operation are seldom measured or reported. This means that blasting is seldom optimised in terms of its overall economic impact on an operation. Blasting operations have evolved according to the environment provided by mine management. Most operations seek to minimise the unit cost of each component process (overburden removal, blasting, excavation and transport, crushing or grinding) without recognising the impact that blasting performance has on subsequent activities. The creation of æcost centresÆ or æmanagement unitsÆ that isolate blasting from its downstream impacts reinforce this trend. Modern blasting technology is regarded as sophisticated by virtue of the mechanical design of the drills, the chemistry of the explosives and the flexibility and reliability of modern blast initiation systems. However, blast performance is controlled by the nature of the rock mass and there is generally an inadequate appreciation of how blast designs should be tailored to suit different rock mass conditions or to meet different blasting objectives. Most operations utilise a limited suite of standard designs without routinely tailoring designs to suit the actual conditions at hand or the objectives of each blast. Mining operations would benefit from tackling the following specific challenges:What is the appropriate target performance for blasting operations to generate the maximum economic benefit for the operation as a whole? How should designs be configured to suit the changing rock mass conditions and operating constraints? What compromise (if any) should be allowed from the ideal to assist conflicting scheduling or other operational requirements? How can blast performance be measured and reported to provide appropriate guidance to future operations? These challenges can be tackled through the process of æblast engineeringÆ. This paper discusses the potential impact of blasting performance on the economics of mining operations and the author argues that very considerable benefits over and above those currently being achieved could be realised by improving the routine engineering of mine blasts. The paper then explores how the industryÆs failure to recognise the economic importance of blasting has resulted in the engineering of blasting operations receiving less management and technical support than is appropriate. Finally, a simple approach to the engineering of routine blasting operations is described as an example of how these challenges can be tackled.

Excessive use of computers in teaching, especially in self-learning programs, may destroy creativity and initiative. It is essential that engineers remain innovative to develop new technology. Safety legislation may have hindered the Development of mine managers. It may be necessary to develop two distinct streams of mining engineers. One should be biased towards human relations and safety, to 'be a certificated mine manager, and the other should be mathematically based as a high-technology mining engineer who would not necessarily qualify for a certificate of competency without a postgraduate course.

Vibration analysis for diagnosis of machines is a powerful instrument for condition monitoring. Especially for diagnosis of antifriction bearings various equipment and techniques have been developed and are available. The envelope analysis is the most reliable method for bearing diagnosis. Different bearing failures lead to different patterns of the envelope spectrum. Checking the amplitudes of characteristic bearing frequencies is mostly not sufficient for a reliable diagnosis. Therefore human experts compare the pattern of the spectrum with typical patterns of bearing defects. In this paper a diagnosis system is presented which imitates this action of human experts. Using a neural net the system not only distinguishes typical bearing defects but also detects unbalance, beating of disengaged machine parts and other kinds of machine failures.

Rock mass classification systems have emerged as a powerful tool which can be used for assessing ground conditions and determining support requirements in underground mines. They should not be used as a substitute for complete engineering design, but rather as a supplement to observational methods and analytical study. In general, the use of rock mass classification is attractive, but each classification system has various deficiencies. Use of any particular system should be made only with knowledge of that systems limitations. It is desirable to employ a number of systems and design methods which will allow for comparison and lead to a better understanding of the rock mass condition.The Rock Mass Quality system (Q-System), developed by the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute, and the Rock Mass Rating (RMR) System, Bieniawski, were designed primarily for civil engineering structures. Laubscher et al (1978) further developed the RMR-system specifically for rock mechanics engineering in the mining industry. A method of stope design, which introduces a stability factor for the rock mass and compares this with hydraulic radius, was developed by Mathews et al (1981). This paper reviews the above systems by applying them to stability assessment of crown pillars in two Australian metal mines and provides a critical analysis of the various approaches. In particular each system will be analysed to determine its suitability for use in crown pillar design. The most suitable system(s) will form the basis for future development in crown pillar stability analysis.

Pasminco is actively addressing the optimal utilisation of the known orebody at the Broken Hill mine, in addition to actively exploring for economic mineralisation in the region. As part of the policy of better utilising the known mineralisation a major upgrade of geological systems at the mine was initiated. The software chosen for this change was Maptek's Vulcan, mainly because of the ease of use of this package. Rather than having numerous data sources in varying software packages the mine aimed to limit interfaces and packages. The decision to upgrade the mine's software was not taken lightly, especially in view of the inature stage of Broken Hill mining operations. However, the current mine life of Pasminco Broken Hill mine is I I years, which is longer than many new mines setting up in Australia today. Also, a more sophisticated system brings with it a better understanding of the economic mineralisation, possibly extending the mine life further. The process of moving the Broken Hill databases into Vulcan was a huge task which included, database transfer, digitising, wire framing, modelling and eventually ore resource calculation. To ensure the validity of the new ore resource accounting system, the existing system was run as a duplicate for the introductory year, providing a comparison and if necessary a safety net. The benefits of such a change, however, became apparent almost immediately. Area geologists realised the opportunity to revise geological interpretations in their areas of responsibility, enabling them to obtain a better understanding of orebody morphology. Three- diniensional analysis provides an excellent method by which review of ore targets both in the underground and mine lease exploration areas can he made. As each new find of mineralisation enters the system and hopefully extends the mine life, the opportunities for further mineral exploration in Broken Hill area by Pasminco are enhanced.

In July 1994 the Premier, John Fahey MP, announced that the New South Wales Government would make available a total of $40 million over six years in new funding for the Department of Mineral Resources. These funds are to be applied directly to the generation of regional geological and geophysical information. The Government's initiative known as `Discovery 2000', is aimed at providing a major boost to the exploration industry. The Government expects new discoveries to be made and new mines to be developed because of the initiative and, perhaps, the first ever commercial oil or gas production in New South Wales. The Government's return will come from increased economic activity, and from the increased royalty return from higher levels of production. Quality information is the key to successful exploration. In the highly competitive business of mineral and petroleum exploration high quality regional geological and geophysical information improve both the efficiency and effectiveness of the area selection or project generation process. Using the `needle in the hay stack' analogy, Discovery 2000 will vastly improve industry's chances of finding the haystacks. It is up to the mineral and petroleum industries to find their respective `needles'. Careful target area selection is probably the most critical factor in mineral exploration. The ability to select the most prospective areas, or to identify prospectivity that others have failed to recognise, can make all the difference between success and failure. Government geological surveys clearly have a crucial role to play in providing the geoscientific information infrastructure that companies must have if they are to make the discoveries this country needs to pay its way in the world. It is the regional information generated by Governments that sets the scene for efficient exploration. This regional information includes regional aeromagnetics and radiometrics and gravity, regional geological mapping and tectonic analysis, and geoscientific databases. The New South Wales Department of Mineral Resources (by various names) has been providing such information for over 100 years and has led the way in many aspects of the generation and dissemination of geological, geophysical and metallogenic Information.

Profitability today depends upon efficient operations, which can only be achieved through precise and dependable con-trol of each process unit comprising thetotal plant.Modern process control systems utilise distributed architecture with microprocessor-based controllers, data acquisition devices and VDU operator stations. Honeywell intro-duced this control technology in 1975 with the "Total Distributed Control" System. Now, building on the proven performance and re-liability inherent in TDC hiway modules, Honeywell has extended the TDC system to inte-grate both management information and control by providing distributed processing modules on the new TDC 3000 Local Control Network (LCN).

ABSTRAC'T' Although hosted within an Ordovician magmatic arc, the Peak Hill high sulphidation system displays features typical of younger Pacific Rim high sulphidation epithermal gold deposits. Regional NW trending transfer structures are inferred to localise the magmatic source at their intersection of the NS trending arc. Fluids have migrated from the magmatic source along NW structures and thence exploited permeable horizons, which have become silicified. Alteration displays typical zonation from silicification through assemblages characterised by alunite, pyrophyllite and kaolinite and is followed by breccia/fracture controlled sulphide and gold deposition. Sinistral rotation on the NS arc has dilated NW trending fractures to produce the WNW to EW dilational fractures which host the higher grade ore. Mineral assemblages are typical of formation distal to the magmatic source in an epithermal environment. The combination of alteration and mineralisation zonation with structure provide fluid vectors which target a magmatic source to the SE of Peak Hill.

Exploration risk increases with time, due to a general decrease in prospectivity as the more accessible deposits are found, and be- cause of rising costs and demands due to an improving standard of living. Risk is separated into financial risk, which increases sharply at the development stage, and the risk of failure which is at its peak at the outset of exploration. Risk is also divided into internal and external factors; some of the latter cannot be offset, viz. the systematic overall risk for any enterprise. The recently emergent risk embodied in withdrawal of large areas from exploration access is discussed. An appeal is made for objective multiple land-use policies to be applied so that land remains available at reasonable cost and with appropriate environ- mental safeguard conditions. Risks specific to gold exploration are discussed. As gold now accounts for over 50% of all mineral exploration, and most other metals are depressed, any sharp decline in gold will have grave effects on the ex- ploration industry. Gold exploration will become more difficult and expensive in about five years, after most of the readily accessible deposits in Australia are found. Government's role is important in pro- viding stability and basic data at reasonable cost. Exploration for specific minerals or of particular areas could be stimulated by extending the 150%.tax deductibility of R & D to aspects of exploration of strategic im- portance, particularly in the event of a downturn. Exploration is classic scientific research, at least through to the proving Stages.

The authors have used the geotechnical study for design of the South Wall of Mt. Newman Mining's Mt. Whaleback Mine to illustrate how geotechnical studies can be economically justified. This is achieved by relating the savings resulting from increased ore recovery and prevention of failure to the cost of the study. An outline of the geotechnical study is provided in the paper, including a brief description of the innovative methods used to investigate geological structure of the mine and descriptions of the methods of slope reinforcement adopted.

The blast furnace is a counter current reactor. The counter current principle of the furnace makes it very efficient in transferring the heat and mass required to drive the reduction reactions inside the furnace. However, this does impose a stringent requirement on the permeability of burden material in the furnace. Lump ore is one of the key ferrous feeds used in the blast furnace ironmaking process, often accounting for ten to 20 per cent of the blast furnace ferrous burden. As the lump ore descends through the blast furnace, it is dried, heated and reduced by the ascending hot reducing gas. To ensure good furnace permeability, generation of fines from burden materials including lump ore due to mechanical, thermal and chemical processes needs to be minimised. Unlike sinter and pellets, lump ore is subject to thermal degradation. To assess this behaviour of lump, the ISO decrepitation test (ISO 8371, 2007) is often conducted, and the result is calculated as a decrepitation index (DI). However, the DI values obtained from the existing ISO decrepitation test vary considerably between test portions and between laboratories, which makes meaningful comparison very difficult. In order to identify the sources responsible for the unacceptable repeatability, the effect of various testing conditions, such as particle size, heating rate, sample preparation and loading method, on the mean DI value was studied. It has a 4.1 m diameter cutterhead mounted on a horizontal axis which in turn is perpendicular to the line of the machine. The cutterhead rotates at 15 rpm and is supported on a boom which swings the cutterhead through a horizontal arc.

Open pit mining began in 1978 at the Woodlawn base metals deposit. For its ten years as an open pit the mine was financially unsuccessful as a combined result of difficult metallurgy and industrial unrest. In 1985 CRA bought out two American joint venturers with a view to going underground and a prerequisite to expending capital on developing an underground operation was to improve the industrial climate, work practices and mining methods.Following feasibility work, continuous production from the underground mine began in 1986 using mechanised cut and fill methods and a workforce trained under a multiskilling program. Men with no previous underground experience were trained by supervisors with backgrounds as miners to undertake all the work that is required with increases in skill levels being rewarded with increases in pay.

The procedure for operation of deluge systems installed in road tunnels is still a subject of debate. The work undertaken in this paper assists in the understanding of the effects of deluge in road tunnels, and thus aims to help inform the development of operational policy. Analysis was undertaken using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations to help explore the deluge interaction with the tunnel ventilation (including smoke exhaust) and combustion products. It was found, for the scenarios considered, that: Deluge activation can decrease the required critical velocity for smoke backlayering, and this in turn can improve the effectiveness of a smoke exhaust system.The dominant parameter for deluge effectiveness is the vehicle configuration, with shielded scenarios (such as a fire in the passenger compartment) showing almost no water reaching the fire. The water delivery rate (5 mm/min versus 10 mm/min) has only a minor effect on the smoke duct damper inlet temperatures and downstream smoke temperatures for small fires (5 MW). For large fires (50 MW) the higher water delivery rate gives slightly improved performance (lower damper inlet temperatures and lower downstream smoke temperatures). A one-dimensional transient tunnel model incorporating different operational and deluge response policies (ie deluge activation times) was developed. It was used to examine the influence of different operational parameters on life safety risk and tunnel damage risk. It was found, for the scenarios considered, that: The life safety risk for different scenarios has a sensitivity to deluge activation policy with the case of delaying the deluge activation for a long time giving the worst outcomes. However, the most critical parameters for life safety risk are operator response time (for all response activities, not just deluge) and the type of fire (configuration, size and growth rate).There is a reduction in risk of tunnel damage when the deluge is activated earlier, although the fire configuration (ie whether or not the seat of the fire can be reached) has the greatest influence on the outcome. It is concluded that the deluge activation policy should be case-dependent. It will depend on the tunnel, the safety systems provided, and most particularly the vehicles involved. The current policy in Australian tunnels is for manual activation of the deluge by the tunnel operator as soon as practical after the fire is confirmed (see also PIARC, 2007). This is a good policy. However, future work may be helpful to improve the skills of operators to make the best judgement as to when deluge should be activated, balancing all risks. This work could include research to further the understanding of deluge and fire in road tunnels, training programs and consideration of historical fire events.

The Martha Mine is an open cut operation situated in the midst of Waihi town which has been operating since 1987. Since then it has produced some 700,000 ounces (oz) of gold and 4,000,000 oz of silver from an epithermal vein system. It was previously worked by underground methods from 1880 to 1952 to a depth of 600 m producing 5 million ounces (Moz) of gold and 30 Moz of silver. The licensed reserves are scheduled to be mined out early in the year 2001. An additional economic resource of over 750,000 oz of gold has been identified which can be accessed by deepening the pit a further 50 m along the main Martha vein. This would extend the mine life to the year 2007. Applications were lodged on 4 July 1997 for the necessary resource consents, discharge permits and variations for the current Mining Licence conditions. The extension project requires approval from the District Council, Regional Council and the Ministry of Commerce. The consent and permitting process is extensive because of the urban setting of the mine. An approach to keep the extension as similar as possible to the current operations was adopted to give the community and authority confidence in the proposed extension. This paper summarises the extension detail and the permitting requirements it has had to address despite the extension being "more of the same". The permitting process has been exhaustive with little recognition of the standards already achieved in protecting the environment which are recognised worldwide.
