Exploration risk increases with time, due to a general decrease in prospectivity as the more accessible deposits are found, and be- cause of rising costs and demands due to an improving standard of living. Risk is separated into financial risk, which increases sharply at the development stage, and the risk of failure which is at its peak at the outset of exploration. Risk is also divided into internal and external factors; some of the latter cannot be offset, viz. the systematic overall risk for any enterprise. The recently emergent risk embodied in withdrawal of large areas from exploration access is discussed. An appeal is made for objective multiple land-use policies to be applied so that land remains available at reasonable cost and with appropriate environ- mental safeguard conditions. Risks specific to gold exploration are discussed. As gold now accounts for over 50% of all mineral exploration, and most other metals are depressed, any sharp decline in gold will have grave effects on the ex- ploration industry. Gold exploration will become more difficult and expensive in about five years, after most of the readily accessible deposits in Australia are found. Government's role is important in pro- viding stability and basic data at reasonable cost. Exploration for specific minerals or of particular areas could be stimulated by extending the 150%.tax deductibility of R & D to aspects of exploration of strategic im- portance, particularly in the event of a downturn. It is usually the case that the short-term plannerÆs role is occupied by the younger site mining engineer. ThatÆs because mine scheduling is generally seen as a mundane and thankless task. But, short-term planners play an extremely important role in maximising the value of the mining resource, generally the companyÆs biggest asset. A look at any mining operation today will expose the competing drivers behind the operational and strategic plans. Operations are too often faced with pushing short-term constraints. It is the responsibility of the short-term engineer to answer the question of æWhere to next?Æ. In answering this question the young mining engineer is in an environment overflowing with urgency and constraints. Hasty decisions made at this time may have significant adverse consequences to the long-term value of the resource. Long-term strategy must address a broad and expanding number of issues that are generally overlooked by the short-term planner. It takes a holistic, rather than the prescriptive approach of short-term planning to determine the best strategic direction for the operation. To better understand the consequences of decisions made at the operational level short-term planners need better vision of the whole business. The key to improving the mining business is a planning process that integrates the short-term planners role with the overall mining strategy. Future developments in the mine planning process will focus on bridging this ædisconnectÆ between the operational objectives and the long-term goals. Improvements will come from the tools which planning engineerÆs use, and the planning methodology surrounding them. There will be significant hardware improvements to improve the speed with which a short-term planner can evaluate plausible options. Software that maximises the use of the improved hardware will be developed. Complimenting these technological improvements, conceptual methodologies of mine planning will improve to allow strategic planning to be brought within the focus of the short-term planning engineer. In todayÆs mining industry the young mining engineer is embarking on a career where business processes are paramount. This paper discusses the ædisconnectÆ that occurs today between the operational planning and long-term strategy and how this is driving developments in mine planning today.

The passive interception and in situ treatment of groundwater using permeable reactive barriers (PRBs) has, within the past decade, become an accepted remedial approach to the control of plumes containing dissolved organic and inorganic contaminants. Since the first applications of the technology in the early-1990s, there have been several field-scale PRBs that have provided excellent treatment of dissolved metals in groundwater. Additional commercial applications and demonstration projects continue to be developed. Three field-scale applications and supporting laboratory columns have shown that several thousands of milligrams per litre of sulfate, more than 1000 mg/L iron, and several tens of milligrams per litre of other metals can be removed from groundwater by PRBs that promote sulfate reduction. The reactive materials, which incorporate various forms of organic carbon, promote microbially mediated sulfate reduction, the generation of hydrogen sulfide, and the subsequent precipitation of sparingly soluble iron and other metal sulfide minerals. Effective performance has been achieved by PRBs installed at a mine-tailings impoundment in 1995 (Sudbury, Ontario) and at an industrial facility (Vancouver, British Columbia). These PRBs have removed iron and other metals from groundwater. Similar materials were also used to create reactive layers within test cells directly in a tailings impoundment in 1999 (Timmins, Ontario) with the objective of removing iron and sulfate from the pore water before it migrates from the tailings impoundment. Zero-valent iron (ZVI) has been shown to provide excellent removal of chromium (VI) in a PRB, which was installed at the US Coast Guard facility in Elizabeth City in 1996, by reduction and precipitation reactions. Laboratory tests have also shown that ZVI reduces As(V) to As(III), which is subsequently removed from solution by co-precipitation with iron oxyhydroxides. In groundwater containing sulfate, ZVI and mixtures containing organic carbon can promote sulfate reduction and the subsequent precipitation of sparingly soluble arsenic and other metal sulfides. A trial PRB system was installed in 2001 and was shown to attenuate arsenic and other electroactive metals in groundwater at an industrial facility in northwestern Ontario. Basic oxygen furnace (BOF) slag, a waste material generated by the steel industry, has shown excellent potential for the removal of phosphate, elements such as arsenic and water-borne pathogens from groundwater in field and laboratory tests.

Facies associations in the Okiduse Volcanics, woodlark island, suggest that two major volcanic centres erupted synchronously during the Middle Miocene. These centres are referred to as the Watou Mountain Eruptive Centre and the Uvarakoi Caldera. The Watou Mountain Eruptive Centre, centred on Boganuse Mountain in the Okiduse Range, was a typical, moderate-sized composite volcano (or stratovolcano). The seq-uence is readily divisible into lava (Boganuse lava unit), breccia (Nikuben breccia unit) and epiclastic (Talpas sandstone unit) dominant facies, typical of composite volcanoes. These facies girdle Boganuse Mountain and they are interpreted to represent vent, cone forming and ring plain associat-ions, respectively. These facies indicate a reconstructed volcano of approximately 1,700m height with a basal diameter of 7km. The presence of limited exposures of intrusive associated with the vent facies (Kuike'beimmicrodiorite) suggests that the volcano is only partially dissected. The Uvarakoi Caldera is a felsic volcanic system contrasting with the mafic Watou Mountain centre.

The geological and economic aspects of the known deposits of uranium in southern Africa are described. Processes influencing uranium mineralisation in the relevant geological environments are elaborated upon in order to define fundamental characteristics of mineralisation in the sub-continent and identify potential areas for the location of new deposits. Several areas, namely the Damara orogenic belt and its extension in Zambia and Zaire, the Bushveld zone, and the terrains of uranium fertilisation from the mantle have a high probability of hosting uranium deposits which are yet to be discovered. Uranium resources of the southern African region have been estimated and production forecasted to the year 2000. This geographic region contains one quarter of WOCA's resources in the Reasonably Assured Resources and Estimated Additional Resources - Category I exploitable at less than 130/kg U. On this resource base, it has the potential to maintain its position as the leading exporter of uranium in the world with a production of 13 350 t U308 by the end of the century. Zambia and Zaire are expected to join South Africa and Namibia as uranium producers in the next decade, with their combined share of projected production being in the order of 10%.

INTRODUCTION The association of methane with coal has been known almost since coal was first mined and in general it has been considered the curse of underground coal mining. Historically, most of the effort to handle this methane has been directed at diluting it to a safe level and preventing an explosive mixture of methane and oxygen from forming in any part of the mine. This is generally achieved by in-mine activites. This approach has two principal drawbacks, the severity of which are dependent on local conditions. The first is that the activity associated with the handling of the methane is undertaken in the mine and there- fore competes with the mining activity for the limited space available. The second drawback is that the whole methane handling activity is generally a cost to the coal because methane is so diluted that it cannot be used. Friction rock stabilisers (FRS) are the most common steel-based ground reinforcement used in underground mines in Western Australia. As with any other steel-based product used in underground mines they are susceptible to corrosion, particularly under aggressive minewater and mineral conditions. Because of their thin-wall tubular construction and large surface area, the potential damage resulting from corrosion is considered to be more severe for this type of reinforcement than for other forms of reinforcement made of solid steel bars. Because of the obvious safety problems which may result from corrosion, both mine operators and regulators have raised concerns regarding the long-term effectiveness of FRS installed in underground mines in Western Australia. Although corrosion has been recognised as an important safety issue, the controls of corrosion in varied underground mining environments has not been well understood. To improve the understanding of the corrosion behaviour of FRS, the Department of Minerals and Energy has initiated a research project focused on the mechanisms and extent of corrosion attacks, and their influence on the effectiveness of the reinforcement. This paper describes the research project and presents the interim results achieved To-date.

The central thickened discharge system of tailings disposal takes advantage of the natural beach slope formed by sub-aerially discharged tailings, and the non-segregating properties of thickened tailings, to create a homogeneous conical stack. The need for containing embankments can be largely avoided leading to capital and operating cost savings. Methods for estimating beach slopes and tailings density, essential parameters for the design of such a system, are described. Case histories from three mining operations are used to illustrate the application of the technique, There are also seen to be potential advantages in the areas of water management, seepage, and rehabilitation. Laboratory and in-situ testing enable parameters to be determined.

The development and operation of three large open cut brown coal mines in the Latrobe Valley, Victoria, Australia, requires a wide range of drilling techniques for coal resource evaluation and stratigraphic defi- nition, material property identification, open cut dewatering, and instal- lation of groundwater monitoring bores. This paper describes in detail the range of drilling techniques, equip- ment used and associated problems with drilling, in a deep sedimentary basin containing several major brown coal seams, multiple aquifer sys- tems of varying pressures and thin layers of hard materials including pyrite, siderite and basalt. Methods of rotary drilling include wireline core drilling, conventional core drilling, conventional flush drilling, diamond core drilling, reverse circulation air lift drilling and bucket auger drilling. Cable tool drilling is also used for strata definition and aquifer sampling.

In June 1995, BHP announced that it would build a Hot Briquetted Iron (HBI) plant and associated beneficiation, materials handling and infrastructure facilities at Port Hedland, Western Australia. This plant, the first direct reduction plant in Australia, will convert beneficiated iron ore fines into metallic iron for briquetting into HBI. The reduction plant will be based on the FINMET fluid bed technology jointly developed by Fior de Venezuela and Voest-Alpine Industrienlagenbau. Electric Arc Furnace steelmakers in the Asia Pacific region will be the principal customers for the product. This paper presents an overview of the facilities to be constructed by the project as well as discussing some particular technology and design engineering issues associated with the project.

When the writer first saw the square-set timbering, he was at once impressed with the fact that the frames made by the sets, along the lode amI across it, were composed of panels with rectangular openings, and it was puzzling to understand howsuch a collapsible construction could resist pressure that came unevenly on it. Later he learnt that the sets did not satisfactorily resist such pressure, but mullock filling had, to a great extent, to undertake this duty for them. So it appeared that the setswere practically an expensive scaffolding, enabling the miners to work in the face and carry the stope forward, till the filling was put in behind them to take the pressure of the roof and sides of the excavation. Of course some of the pressure is takenby the sets, but this is because the set timbers prevent the filling being done perfectly; if it were practicable to remove the sets before filling, the filling by itself would more effectively support the back and wall, than do the combined sets andmullock. On the whole, therefore, the sets can hardly be said to be of much benefit where pressure has to be resisted. The Banda arc, a U-shaped orogenic belt which separates oceanic crust of the Banda Sea from continental crust underlying the Australian- New Guinea shelf, has been interpreted to mark the convergent boundary between the northward-moving Indian Ocean- Australian plate and the Southeast Asian plate (Hamilton, 1979; von der Borch, 1979; Bowin et al., 1980). East of the island of Sumba (Fig. 1), the oceanic crust of the Indian Ocean has been completely subducted and Australian crust is now thrust under the Banda arc. Controversy has centered over the interpretation of the Timor trough as the surface location of subduction and the significance of the Savu Sea between Timor and Flores as either a forearc basin or the continuation of the Java trench (Karig et al., 1987). Two concentric island ridges, called the inner and outer Banda arcs (Hamilton, 1979), separate Australian continental crust from the oceanic crust of the Banda Sea (von der Borch, 1979) (Fig. 1). The inner arc is a typical volcanic island arc composed of calc-alkalic volcanic rocks of Neogene age, while older (Permian and younger) complexly deformed sedimentary and metamorphic rocks make up the outer arc. Timor is the largest and most extensively studied island of the outer arc and is separated from the inner arc by the Savu Sea. The triangular-shaped Savu Sea appears to be a complex forearc basin divided by a series of buried basement ridges (Karig et al., 1987). Although a formal EES was not prepared for the WIM project due it winding down, CRA Ltd has been through the EES and planning scheme amendment process for its demonstration plant. Community consultation was involved with all aspects of this process. A nuclear technique utilising the gamma-ray resonance scattering process is used at Isa Mine for the determination of copper in drill core and bulk mineral samples. The Copper Bulk Analyser (CBA) provides quick and accurate non-destructive copper analysis of drill core at costs two to three times cheaper than conventional chemical techniques.The almost immediate availability of sample results enhances the efficiency of the mine geologist in the duties of grade control, design of diamond drilling programmes, and input to planning. The unit has proven to be a reliable and accurate production tool requiring a minimum of technical support.

The installation of on-line analysis systems in the open-pit mines of the Public Power Corporation SA (PPC, the state-owned electricity entity of Greece) is considered to be the key-parameter for performing improved quality control and blending/homogenisation of the produced lignite. In order to investigate the accuracy of these systems under the site-specific conditions of the Greek lignite deposits, a research project was carried out. This was necessary since there is lack of experience in using on-line analysers in mines that produce a fuel of such a poor and largely fluctuating quality. After thorough market research, a dual energy gamma ray transmission on-line ash analyser was installed in Kardia mine of Ptolemais û Amynteon Lignite Centre, which is located in West Macedonia, Greece. The initial results obtained after the realisation of a series of dual-comparison trials (ie using two series of reference values that allow three-way comparisons) pointed out several problems that obstacle the achievement of high accuracy on-line measurements. More specifically, the measurements obtained by the analyser were higher than the concentrations determined by the two laboratories when the ash content was lower than 12 per cent (in wet basis). On the contrary, when the ash content was higher than 12 per cent, the measurements of the on-line analyser were lower than the concentrations determined by the laboratories. In other words, the range of the measurements obtained by the analyser was narrower than that corresponding to the lab analyses results. Therefore, the use of this on-line analysis system under the site-specific operating conditions of Kardia mine does not guarantee improved quality control of the lignite fed to the mine-mouth located power plant. Most probable reasons that explain the above-mentioned problems are the following: The frequent and widely ranging fluctuations of the chemical and mineralogical composition of the lignite transported by the conveyor belt, especially as far as its calcium content is concerned. This result from the nature and the origin of the mineral matter co-excavated with the lignite, which varies from calcareous marls to sands and clays rich in aluminium and silica minerals. The occurrence of gold so finely divided as to be invisible under the microscope, even at magnificatioIl; of 1,200 to 2,000 diameters, is rare, but not unknow;n.. Burg (1930) has described an occurrence of such "invisible gold" from the 25/37 vein of the Bradisor mine at Brad in the Siebengeburgen district of Rumania (Transylvania), in which the pyrite contained up to 150 grams of gold per ton (approx. 5 oz. gold per ton). Hoffman (1931) has described an epithermal silver gold ore from the Titiribi district of Columbia (South America), in which "invisible gold" to the extent of 150 grams per ton occurred in the pyrite, arsenopyrite and zincblende; and Haycock (1937) has recorded it in pyrite from the Surf Point mine (Canada), which contained no visible gold, but yielded positive testsfor gold whenever samples drilled from polished surfaces of apparently homogeneous pyrite were tested spectrographically.The examination of a cyanided pyritic concentrate, together with a sample of the ore from which it' was prepared, from the Dolphin East lode at Vatukoula, Fiji, carried out as part of the programme of the Mineragraphic Section of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, Australia, has established a further occurrence of "invisible gold" in pyrite and arsenopyrite. The chemistry of acidic mine drainage discharging from flooded coal mines is commonly reported to improve with time after flooding. This investigation describes a 18-year dataset of post-flooding water chemistry for a below-drainage underground coal mine within the northern Pittsburgh coal basin (Pennsylvania, USA). The Montour mine is a 5650-hectare below-drainage coal mine of maximum 260 metres depth. Montour was closed in 1980 and flooded to within 38 metres of land surface within 4.8 years. Pumping averaging 210 L/s was then employed to maintain water levels at this elevation. The flooded proportion of the mine (by volume) at full flooding was 56 per cent. The shaft where water was pumped from Montour for water control is located about 70 per cent of the distance between the mine water table and the back of the mine ù that is, it is close to the back of the mine. The residence time (total water volume at flooding divided by pumping rate for control) is estimated at 5.6 years. Time series of chemical analyses show three phases of chemical behavior in post-flooding discharge. In Phase I (zero to two years after flooding), iron concentrations were high and reached their maximum (1100 mg/L). In Phase II (two to four years after flooding), a transition was begun to alkaline conditions, with decline in iron and other solutes. In Phase III (>4 years), net alkaline conditions began, with iron concentrations declining exponentially to 50 per cent of mined volume. This attainment of net alkalinity in this case may have also depended on abundant calcite in overburden extended up to 30 m above the mine floor.

The use of long-hole in-seam drilling techniques for seam gas drainage ahead of mining was introduced to the Australian coal industry by ACIRL in mid-1981. ACIRL's research program has involved the development and demonstration of drilling and borehole survey technology in addition to evaluating the gas drainage potential of long-hole in- seam boreholes. This paper presents the results of the long-hole drilling carried out to date in the Illawarra District of the New South Wales coal fields. Drilling experience in relation to both vertical and horizontal directional control of the drill string, drill performance and borehole survey techniques are discussed. In addition, results of gas drainage effected by the long boreholes are presented. Future potential and requirements for further development of this technology are Reviewed.

The Hall-Heroult process is likely to be the dominant method of aluminium production for the remainder of the century. The characteristics of the operation of a modern smelter are described and attention drawn to their disabilities which are due chiefly to the small production capacity of individual cells.The principal components of the Hall-Heroult cell- the electrolyte, the anode and the cathodes are discussed in order to identify the problems of scale-up. The factors influencing current efficiency and energy consumption are analysed and lead to the conclusion that the greatest potential for energy saving lies in reducing the anode to cathode distance (ACD).The most promising direction for major change is in the application of a new titanium diboride-carbon composite for coating of the surface of the cathode carbon. It improves the wetting of the carbon by aluminium and should permit the use of sloping cathodes and anodes. The deep metal pad would thereby be eliminated and, in the absence of magnetic perturbations, the ACD could be substantially decreased.
