The paper provides a structured methodology to investigate metallurgical problems within the operating concentrators. The strategy uses classical metallurgical data analysis as well as pulp, solution and surface analysis to determine the reasons for particular behaviours. The approach applies equally to all mineral-processing operations. To demonstrate its effectiveness a case study, based on work conducted at Pasminco Rosebery Mine, is described. In this work, the classical metallurgical analysis indicated that a significant amount of sphalerite reporting to the lead concentrate occurred as liberated particles. A combination of pulp, solution and surface analysis supported the hypothesis that the liberated sphalerite was recovered by inadvertent activation by lead ions. Laboratory studies have indicated that the use of sodium carbonate, by itself and in combination with zinc sulphate and sodium cyanide, when added to the lead regrinding mill can depress sphalerite flotation, resulting in an improvement in the lead grade/recovery curve. When this approach was tested in the plant other more dominant issues masked any positive effect the addition of sodium carbonate may have had. The plant trial highlighted the real need for additional regrinding capacity.

Geologists employed by Metals Exploration Pty. Ltd. discovered nickel enrichment at Greenvale, 180 kilometres West of Townsville, in 1967. Subsequent drilling proved an ore body containing 45 million dry tonnes of ore containing an average of 1.5% nickel and 0.11% cobalt. The Freeport Minerals Company, who had experience in treating lateritic nickel ore, were invited to participate in development of the ore body. This resulted in the formation of the operating company Queensland Nickel Pty. Ltd., jointly owned by Freeport Queensland Nickel Inc. and Metals Exploration Queensland Pty. Ltd. With the completion of successful pilot plant testing of Greenvale ore at the Freeport research facilities at Belle Chasse, Louisiana, a treatment plant was constructed at Yabulu, 24 kilometres North West of Townsville. A 225 kilometre railway line was built connecting the Greenvale Mine and Yabulu Treatment Plant. The ore reduction and ammonia/ammonium carbonate leaching flowsheet is similar to that constructed and operated by the Freeport Minerals Company during World War II at Nicaro, Cuba. FIRST TOWN PLANNING PROPOSALS Initially, accommodation at the minesite was provided at the Pastoral Homestead situated some seven kilometres north-east of the mine and between 1963 and 1966 was the base of the exploration camp. Tents were used for sleeping of 100 men and the Homestead used for dining and office facilities. With the beginning of ore production and shipment due to commence in 1969 a permanent town location was sought. Early town planning studies had been commissioned by Amax Inc. and Colonial Sugar Refining Co. Ltd. and in 1967 The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Ltd. took over the responsibility for putting them into effect. The location chosen was about four kilometres due east of the mine. Certain dominant factors influenced this choice. It was near enough to the mine to share services, yet far enough away not to be affected by dust and noise and received the additional shelter of a range of hills separating it from the mine. A predominant slope to the east provided good drainage and the ground was easy to excavate for services.

Technological advances evolve in different ways; many are the result of years of application of scientific method. i.e. Observation Deduction Hypothesis Proof In the mining industry, better explosives, drill bits or reagents are likely to evolve in this way. The scientific method is suited to the application of conventional management structures. Other advances are simply the result of a "brainstorm", or building a better mousetrap. Such inspiration probably resulted in "Split Set" rock bolts, or the first use of a vacuum cleaner principle for shaft mucking. Individual consultants can apply lateral thinking to generate such inspiration. In gathering material for the presentation of this paper, I sent a.letter to all members of the Mineral Industry Consultants Association asking them to nominate problems in the industry requiring investigation. The answers have been divided into two classifications - contract research underway and identified problems requiring solutions.

Belt conveyors are machines for continuous transport with most applications in mining industry in Poland. This is a result of simple construction and cheap operating costs. But conveying materials by belt conveyors are often in the powder state (eg small coal, gypsum, etc) and during the transport there is a possibility of polluting the environment around conveyor route. A good solution for this problem is the pipe conveyor, where a belt is closed on the route in circular shape and flat on unloading point. Another problem which is indicated in the paper is dusting on the belt conveyor boosters. In Poland a new solution of booster has been designed, whereby dustiness of transportation powder materials is reduced by up to about 90 per cent.

WITH the exception of the deposits of the Milburn Cement Co near Dunedin, Wilson's Portland Cement Co., on the Mahurangi River (a short distance north of Auckland), and those of the New Zealand Portland Cement Co., at Limestone Island, the cement. Tesources of New Zealand remain practically undeveloped. The Milburn Company utilizes a mixture of limestone and mud for the manufacture of cement, while Wilson's and the New Zealand Portland Cement companies both have the advantage of a natural cement stock which requires but small additions of highgrade limestone to give the mixture required. The plant and deposits of the New Zealand Portland Cement Co are located in Whangarei Harbour, some six miles from thetownship of Whangarei. The works and dwelling-houses are situated on Limestone Island, which, with an area of 92 acres, and rising to a height of 212 ft., supplies the bulk of the raw material required. In addition to the island, the company possesses a high-grade limestone area of, roughly, four acres, situated on the mainland, 11 miles to the south. Effective selective mining relies heavily on high quality geological data and assay data. Such assay data is dependent on effective sampling protocols, sample preparation techniques, assaying practices and well founded quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) procedures. This paper describes recent developments in grade control sampling at PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals high-grade Kencana gold mine at Gosowong Indonesia and presents a case study in identifying, minimising and monitoring random and systematic sampling error including the use of duplicate sampling and the Thompson Howarth technique for quantifying random sampling error.

Roadheader tunnelling machines have been used in Australia by both mining companies and contractors involved in the mining and con- struction industries since the early 1970's. They have both advantages and limitations, and this paper discusses machine excavation from the point of view of a contractor who has both reaped the benefits and suffered the conse- quences of using roadheaders. Mount Isa Mines Limited has 25 rod and ball mills of various sizes installed in two Concentrators at Mount Isa. A continuing investigation into installation, design and materials of liners for these mills has been in progress since the early sixties. Both manual and mechanical methods of liner installation are used and described. Materials for the various applications have been evaluated, mainly by field trials. Design of liners has also been evaluated by field trials and the history of trials in No.4 Concentrator is given. The purpose of the investigation has been to reduce the cost of mill lining and the life of many linings has been greatly increased as a result of this work.

Despite mineral sand occurrences having been noted since the 1970s, the Wemen North Mine is the first operation to commence commercial mining within the inland Murray Basin. The deposit was discovered in the 1990s and, following lengthy resource development, mining commenced in 2001. This initial mine was established as a pilot operation to test the commercial viability of mining in the Murray Basin, with subsequent expansions planned if the mine proves successful. The deposit lies beneath arable farmland close to the Murray River and is hosted by Pliocene marine sands, with a geometry resembling a classical beach strand placer. The operation utilises traditional dry mining overburden removal techniques, with ore mining carried out using a floating dredge and concentrator. This paper looks at the geology of the Wemen North deposit, the mining techniques and challenges as well as grade control practices employed to mine this palaeo-beach placer deposit.

A methodology is described to integrate heap leaching into a CIP operation. The paper firstly describes what is meant by a 'systems approach'. A broad view of the objectives of integration of heap leaching into CIP is given, followed by the components of the system, and then a description of the methodology for integration. The seven stages of integration are given as determination of distribution of gold, sampling, metallurgical testwork, conceptual study, pilot heap operation, pit modelling and pit optimisation. The final result is a series of optimised curves which determine the maximum value of the orebody, and the optimum cut-over grade from CIP to heap leaching.

Because of the mineralogical complexity of nickeliferous laterites, most commercial and laboratory extractive processes require the ore to be blended to a feed of "constant" chemical composition. Even using the "constant" feed there are significant variations in processing behaviour within and between different feed lots. Chemical and mineralogical analyses of lumps of ore taken from the Yabulu stockpile of Queensland Nickel have highlighted the complex- ity of the ore making up the blended feed material. Each sample has been subjected to acid leaching and reduction/ammonia leaching tests and the results correlated with the mineralogical location of the nickel. The consequences of the variability in ease of leaching of the nickel are indicated.

The Southern Mines Rescue Station (S.M.R.S.) has been established for 55 years and in the past 15 years has had only 4 major call-outs. Whilst the mines rescue training program has continued to expand, the Station has become involved in other work which includes mine worker training and limited research. Notwithstanding, the prime role of the Mines Rescue Station has not been overlooked and the Station has only advanced with the many changes that have occurred in the coal industry. The Rescue Station activities are financed by contributions from Colliery proprietors and the aim of the S.M.R.S. Committee is to provide a service in which colliery management and mine workers will have a high degree of confidence.

The mining industry views with the utmost concern, legislative or administrative action that inherently reduces the scope for exploration activity. Is there any basis for this concern in relation to Victoria? This paper will outline the role of the Department of Minerals and Energy and the main features of legislative provisions affecting exploration effort. The practical difficulties that confront the Department and explorers alike will be examined. The importance of industry representation to influence the direction that policy and legislative review might take, will be highlighted. Above all, the paper will establish that one essential duty of government is to ensure the provision of appropriate mining titles and security of tenure.

There is very little in Australian mining law that sets out the rights of mining tenement and exploration licence holders as against other parties who wish to carry out ground or aerial surveillance over those areas.There have already been several legal actions arising out of this lack, and more can be expected as the public places more rigorous constraints on corporate and individual behaviour. Field personnel, who are mainly fairly junior and less experienced, are entitled to some guidance from the minerals industry, guidance which up to now appears to have been either lacking or covering such a wide range of standards from corporation to corporation as to be virtually useless.Because each State writes its own laws there is no consistency, and the laws generally are lagging behind developments in the industry. In particular, the practice of granting mining tenements for sporadic exploration, a practice that is a leftover from much earlier mining law, has dotted the Australian continent with unattended and unmarked or poorly marked tenements that are difficult to find but confer on the holder prior rights to the minerals under them. Entry onto those areas in most jurisdictions is an offence and their existence compromises the efforts of regional explorers.This clearly unsatisfactory situation requires remedying, which is the purpose of these proposals. A more systematic approach to the granting of reconnaissance, regional and detailed exploration, mining, and retention rights will eliminate much of the problem. For the rest, a code of practice needs to be adopted as soon as possible.

In the climate planning of mines and tunnelling with anticipated poor climatic conditions, and especially in case of longer working shifts, the main question is whether it can be reliably prevented that certain climatic limits laid down be exceeded. Working at high temperature and/or humidity can lead to reduced human working energy û a very important economic aspect û and to a risky lack of concentration on the part of the miners or to heat collapse and extremely dangerous heat stroke. With the Deutsche Montan Technologie GmbH (DMT) climate prediction programs, both the dry and the extremely significant humid heat transfer can be calculated. This is due to the high planning reliability involved. With the help of these climate prediction programs it is already possible to determine the anticipated climatic values for the operation phase as early as the planning stage of new ore or coal fields or of tunnel construction projects and to design the optimum air cooling system for every underground project with due regard to technical and economic aspects.

Research activities to classify the quality of iron oxides have a long history but most of such activities are for the existing processes such as blast furnace or DR plant. Therefore the newly developed process, such as the COREX process, needs new standardisation although some basic functions of the new process have similarity to the existing processes. Many researchers (Hauk, 1990; Cho et al, 1998) in the field of COREX process have conducted investigations since the early stages of the process development and activities are underway for further plant optimisation. As Agrawal and Oshnock (1995) pointed out, because coke is not included in the COREX reduction shaft the strength requirement of the feed materials in COREX process will be more demanding than that in the blast furnace. This condition is similar to Midrex DR plant but the main reduction gas of COREX plant is carbon monoxide generated from coal combustion while that of Midrex DR plant is hydrogen from natural gas.
