Tholeiitic metabasalts comprise at least five geochemically distinct mafic volcanic associations of Late Palaeozoic age within the Gympie Province, southeast Queensland. Geochemical features indicate that parental magmas of the various metavolcanic suites were generated in contrasting tectonic regimes, although each of the suites shows some affinities with eruptives from convergent plate margin settings.Basalts from the Highbury Volcanics of the Gympie Group are island arc tholeiites (IAT) formed during an immature stage of eruptive activity in an intra-oceanic arc. They are unique among the analysed metabasites in possessing high Zr/Nb (Zr/Nb - 30) and very high Ba/Nb, and as well as low Ti/V, Ti/Zr and Ti/Y. These features are explicable solely in terms of contributions from a depleted, convecting upper mantle source, and large ion lithophile element (LILE) enriched fluids ascending from subducted oceanic crust.

The history of the reduction of iron from its ores is lost in antiquity. Archreologists state that man has practised it for over four thousand years. Until comparatively recent times charcoal was the principal reducing agent for making metallic iron from its various oxidised ores. Coke was first used by iron founders in England in 1619, and its use spread gradually throughout the civilised world from then onwards. Indeed, the destruction of forests to obtain the requisite charcoal made the iron founders, both in England and America, extremely unpopular, and this hampered the iron industry to a considerable extent, until coal provided the metallurgist with a new and better fuel--coke which is used by most pyro-metallurgists today. The transition from wood to coal products for iron smelting had a profound effect on the location of iron works. Particularly was this the case in America where, in the infancy of the industry, practically each of the early States had its own iron producers, but as coal and coke replaced charcoal, there came about a concentration of the iron and steel industry around the coking coal deposits, and so today there are huge steel plants clustered around the soft coal basins in Pennsylvania and Illinois.The development of the iron and steel industry in Australia, which is comparatively recent by world standards, has been cradled in the coal basins of New South Wales. The first steel works of any consequence in this country were built near Lithgow, close by the mines which produced the coal for coking.Incidentally, these works were rather unique in that the three essential materials for iron and steel manufacture-ore, coal, and limestone-were found virtually at the works' back door.When, in 1912, the location of the proposed steel works for The Broken Hill Pty. Co. Ltd. for smelting ore from Iron Knob in South Australia was considered, the site ultimately chosen was at Newcastle, almost on top of seams of satisfactory coking coal. One of the major factors which had determined the site of the steel works was the fact that, about 1912, three tons of coal were required to produce one ton of finished steel product, and the relative economics of ore and coal haulage were much in favour of bringing ore to the coal.

For several years, the Geology Department of the University of Canterbury has hosted a series of postgraduate projects in the field of coal studies, supported principally by the Ministry of Energy and to a lesser extent by private companies. These projects have involved mainly West Coast Coalfields, and my own studies have focussed on inorganic geochemical aspects of West Coast coals. Because of the large number of potentially important analyte elements in coal, and the wide diversity of coals occurring in the West Coast region, this project has required a substantial amount of work to be spent on sample collection, sample preparation, development of analytical methods, and actual analysis. Considerable problems must be faced at the sampling stage: Can sufficient information be obtained from whole-seam composites, or should seams be sampled in plies. Ply analysis is preferable, but results of proximate analyses are usually available for composites only. Where multi-seam drillhole samples become available (eg Greymouth Coalfield, where some holes yielded more than six sampled seams), the ply option involves a dramatic increase in the number of samples. I have attempted to strike a workable compromise between geographical coverage of coalfields, and detailed sampling of individual seams at each locality. In many cases, sample material has been used jointly with Jane Newman who has carried out petrographic studies.

BECAUSE of the attention given in recent years to the flotation process, there is an extensive range of equipment available to any staff detailed for: the design of a flotation mill. This statement applies not only to the flotation machines, but also to equipment for crushing and grinding, elevating the pulp, dehydrating of concentrates, and the methods of driving the various equipment.Distributed through the Proceedings and Transactions of various metallurgical societies and journals there are many excellent descriptions of flotation mills, their equipment and performance.Whilst these articles describe-in many cases in detail-the equipment in the mills to which they refer, the reasons which govern the choice of each particular equipment are not usually given.

Particles finer than 10 um often cause problems in flotation. The current under- standing of the nature of the following effects is discussed: slime coatings on particles, carrier flotation, increased froth stability, entrainment of ultrafine gangue, excess reagent consumption, slower rate of flotation, more reactive surfaces. The review emphasizes the principles underlying these effects rather than details of progress in practical solutions to the problems they cause. The princi- ples of selective flocculation and floc flotation and the various approaches to achieving selectivity are discussed. Hydrodynamic effects on floc growth are reviewed. The evidence suggests that satisfactory performance in the ultrafines fraction will be achieved only by simul- taneously increasing the rate of flotation of the ultrafine valuable mineral and de- creasing the rate of entrainment of ultra- fine gangue.

The multi-reversal direct shear test (MRDS) method is commonly used to measure the residual shear strength of soils. However, when the standard direct shear (DS) apparatus is used, the MRDS method is prone to two major sources of error: load cap tilting and specimen loss. These two sources of error can cause erratic behaviour in the residual shear strength curve, making it difficult or even impossible to determine the correct residual shear strength value of the specimen being tested. This paper presents the results of new modifications to the standard DS apparatus that prevent load cap tilting and specimen loss. Consolidated drained testing was performed on highly-over consolidated cohesive soil samples from a Latrobe Valley open pit mine, with results obtained from the modified DS apparatus showing a great improvement in the residual shear strength profile compared to those obtained using the standard apparatus. Large numbers of reversals (up to 14) conducted on a single specimen in the modified DS apparatus showed no notable load cap tilting and no specimen loss occurred. This paper presents a fragmentation model for large production blasts in an open pit or underground environment. The paper shows that the particle velocity is directly related to pressure, strain, and strain rate and so it can be considered as driving force and mechanism of rock fragmentation. This is supported by the fact that a vibration with a larger peak particle velocity (PPV) generates larger disturbance in rock and so finer fragmentation or more blast damage than a low PPV. The crack distribution in rock from impact is based on findings from previous researchers (Seaman, Curran and Shockey, 1976; Liu and Xu, in press). The fragmentation size is calculated at three-dimensional grid points within a blast. The fines and oversized blocks are calculated explicitly – the fines generated close to blastholes and big blocks far from boreholes are modelled naturally. The multiple blasthole fragmentation (MBF) model takes surveyed irregular geometry of the free face of a blast as the calculation boundary. The MBF can model fragmentation with over one million grid points. Examples of the model’s field comparison are also included.The PPV at a calculation grid is estimated based on the same approach used for the near field non-linear vibration model (Yang and Scovira, 2007). The method is based on the dominant charge for a calculation grid point, non-linear charge weight superposition within a charge and from multiple charges, strain wave broadening, and amplitude attenuation with distance from a charge segment. The blasthole confinement affected by earlier firing charges is also taken into account.The MBF model inputs from blast design, such as: location and orientation of each blasthole, stemming length, blasthole diameter, multiple decking, bench height, initiation sequence, etc. It models the effect of the delay and its scatter in each blasthole on fragmentation and has a statistical modelling capability for geological random variation on attenuation of particle velocity wave. The wave reinforcement due to instantaneous waves arriving or diminishing cooperative contribution due to long delay intervals between charges is also simulated.The results are displayed in 3D volumetric plots, contour of fragmentation in cross-sections, and size passing curves for a whole blast or a region of the blast.CITATION:Yang, R, 2015. Solution transport of gold and silver has occurred as a result of the chemical weathering of many Western Australian epigenetic gold deposits. Evidence for the remobilization of gold exists in the form of small crystalline octahedra, mustard gold, flake gold, and coatings on iron-oxide. This "secondary" gold is of high purity (low silver content). It is believed that the high chloride content of laterite profiles combined with the acid produced by the oxidation and hydrolysis (ferrolysis) of iron has caused dissolution of Au/Ag and Au/Te alloys. Gold, and less frequently silver, is subsequently reprecipitated in the profile nearby.Pyrite, which is a ubiquitous accessory of gold in vein or lode systems, is probably an important source of iron for the development of acidity. Where carbonate is abundant in the primary assemblage, neutralization directs the oxidation of sulphide to a path which produces thiosulphate, and an alternative type of Au/Ag oxidation process. Sulphide/carbonate ratios in the vein system, and adjacent wallrock are seen as important in determining the course and extent of remobilization in the oxidized zone of gold deposits.

This paper addresses the problem of prediction of grade variables over volumes (block estimation) for an autonomous mine. Resource estimation is usually concerned with the prediction of the quality of material over volumes (blocks in resource models). This problem is tackled by developing Bayesian block estimation with the Gaussian processes (GPs) framework. GPs are commonly used for nonparametric regression and classification and offer an elegant solution to deal with incomplete knowledge and information. A GP is defined by its mean and covariance function. The parameters of the covariance function can be learnt by maximising the marginal likelihood of the data. This offers a way of automating the covariance fitting process, while at the same time allowing for an assessment of how well the covariance function fits the data. Within the GP framework the calculation of the average grade over a volume can be performed using Bayesian quadrature, which treats an integral as a random variable. First, it is demonstrated that the block kriging equations in geostatistics are the same as Bayesian quadrature. Then, it is determined when closed form analytical solutions for the integrals are possible and quadrature approaches for approximations are briefly discussed.

The management and operation of tailings storage facilities (TSFs) are often neglected until the process plant has to shut down as a result of this negligence or as a result of a catastrophic failure as was the case during the recent TSF failure in North America.TSFs are often regarded as non-assets and do not receive the attention they deserve in terms of technical expertise and financial provision. A TSF is not a simple structure but a complex and dynamic structure that changes throughout its operational life. The operational life of a TSF is the period in which there is the greatest opportunity for risks to occur. The failure of a TSF is normally not as a result of a single event but as a result of a consequence of events. These events are often not recognised in time due to a number of factors.Process plants and slurry pumping systems are operated at suboptimal conditions in order to maintain throughput. At the same time, the tailings properties are compromised in terms of slurry density and particle size distribution amongst other things. Tailings deposition cycles and drying cycles are not well understood and the tailings management strategy is not well tuned in terms of maximising consolidation and improving in situ densities. Pond control is also neglected. These are aspects that form the keystone to the effective utilisation of available deposition area as well as the frequency and cost of future embankment raises.Apart from operational issues, forward planning in terms of budget requirements, increases in tailings throughput, embankment raises, pipe replacements, etc are normally put on the back burner. Available deposition space at the time seems to render this planning obsolete.The bottom line is that responsible tailings management and proper forward planning can limit liability and reduce the bottom line in terms of cents per ton if correctly implemented by suitably qualified tailings managers and engineers.The aspects that need to be considered as part of responsible tailings management are highlighted in this paper.CITATION:Boshoff, J, 2015. Although significant advances have been made in understanding the mechanics of pit slopes, numerical modelling hasnÆt significantly impacted on the reliability of the design process. It is well known that legacy modelling approaches donÆt simulate large slopes well. In recent times, the emergence of very large finite element (FE) models with more than ten million degrees of freedom and the ability to simulate a large number of discrete structures, has allowed a step change in the simulation precision for slopes. The model size allows global and local effects to be realistically simulated in one model for the first time and the process can be better integrated into normal open pit slope engineering processes. Some examples of simulation of very large open pits are shown that demonstrate the challenges and some recent advances in modelling large slope behaviour. Significant limitations in the current measurement and observation regimes of open pits have been identified.

The geotechnical model is the cornerstone of any mining geotechnical design and as such the confidence level and reliability of the geotechnical model is paramount. The geotechnical model confidence level needs to be commensurate with the level of design that is being applied or study that is being undertaken. The geotechnical model is made up of several components and the reliability of the data underlying these components ultimately determines the reliability of the geotechnical model.Data reliability is linked to the quantity of data collected, the spatial distribution of the data collected, quality of the data collection and the interpretation of the data. In a typical project, there is an opportunity to improve data reliability through the scoping, prefeasibility, feasibility and final design and implementation stages.Currently, very little quantitative guidance exists in the literature on assessing the confidence level of geotechnical studies, although there have been attempts by various authors (Haile, 2004; Haines, Swart and Kruger, 2006; Read and Stacey, 2009; Dunn, Basson and Parrott, 2011) to qualitatively describe what level of geotechnical data is required. Recently a number of authors (Read, 2013; Fillion and Hadjigeorgiou, 2013; Thomas, 2013) have outlined methods that could be applied to assess the reliability of some types of geotechnical data that are used in the development of geotechnical models.This paper briefly discusses some of the factors influencing data reliability and the geotechnical model confidence and some of the tools available.CITATION:Dunn, M J, 2014. Since 2005 BHP Billiton Iron Ore has been working with the consulting company Runge to implement the software XPAC Advanced Destination Scheduler (ADS) in life-of-mine studies. The Mt Whaleback mine, being the single biggest open cut iron ore mine in the world, presents some special challenges in scheduling. The biggest challenge has been the slow run time and difficulty in targeting all ore and waste requirements. The high waste to ore strip ratio means that much of the cost of mining is tied up in waste dumping. It is therefore very important to schedule waste efficiently. At Mt Whaleback there is an additional challenge of managing two types of waste: inert and environmentally sensitive pyritic material. This paper shows how the XPAC destination scheduler is configured to achieve efficient and repeatable waste scheduling results at the Mt Whaleback mine. It also discusses proposed improvements to the process. The overall ore and waste schedule is configured to target mining parameters, crusher feed and grades. The schedule is run in two stages. The first stage is ore mining. The waste that needs to be mined is locked in a sequence. The second stage is the waste scheduling. The waste destination scheduler uses three inputs: source waste parcels locked in a sequence, a haul road and a waste dump block model. The process involves setting some rules for dump progression and haul path selection. These can be validated. The schedule is then run to target the shortest travel time. The results of scheduling are graphical and numeric and can be transferred into many different formats for reporting. The graphical result shows face positions in time that can be used for detailed dump design. The numeric results are used to estimate truck fleet size, fuel consumption, labour and equipment financials. The process has been successful in reducing the project time line, increasing the ability to do more scenarios and increasing schedule accuracy, transferability and repeatability.

Segment and gasket lining in tunnel boring machine (TBM) tunnels; and sheet membrane lining systems in driven tunnels are robust waterproofing systems each with a proven history of performance in Australia and further afield. Where an interface between these two systems occurs, the potential for costly failures is vastly increased and additional attention to detail is required in design, planning and construction. TBM cross-passages represent the most common occurrence of this interface, with steel compression flanges and neoprene gaskets being the typical means of connecting the waterproofing systems. There is a large variance in both detailing these flanges and associated outcomes, which makes this an area where there is room for improvement within the industry.The paper will look to tease out the various issues associated with this interface and how they can be dealt with efficiently with appropriate design measures, robust planning and carefully controlled construction methods.The paper will also look to review the new technologies and systems currently being put forward as potential alternatives, including an epoxy tape system, which has recently been successfully trialled on a project in Europe under high-pressure head.CITATION:O’Dwyer, E P, 2014. Rosebery Mine is situated on the west coast of Tasmania and is AustraliaÆs largest volcanic-hosted base and precious metals deposit (zinc, lead, copper, gold and silver). The milling operation has been producing zinc, lead and copper concentrates continuously for over 100 years. RoseberyÆs long life demonstrates the operation to be high grade, and high margin, capable of operating through several commodity price cycles. Paradoxically, throughout this long history the ælife-of-mineÆ as defined by proven and probable reserves has been short. Zinifex has demonstrated its commitment to discover the future of Rosebery with the growth project æProject HorizonsÆ. The aim of the project is to extend the life of mine beyond 2020, with an additional exploration expenditure of $19 million over three years. Despite the maturity of the deposit, early success has confirmed the potential with the discovery of new resources. Mine planning strategic studies are challenging established paradigms of mine production, throughput rates and metal cut-off grades. Discovering the optimal process rate for Rosebery, by examining the æHill of ValueÆ and underground mine optimisation is proving critical to the best exploitation of RoseberyÆs rich resources. The promise of finding a mine within a mine is being realised, with new lenses being delivered by exploration success and real grade/tonnage options optimised through dynamic mine planning. The future of Rosebery is co-dependent on these two areas of discovery. This ensures capital expenditure decisions are informed, to secure the next 20 years of wealth creation and beyond.

In truck-based hauling systems, the mine haul road network is a critical and vital component of the production process. As such, underperformance of a haul road will impact immediately on mine productivity and costs. Operations safety, productivity and equipment longevity are all dependent on well-designed, constructed and maintained haul roads. With the advent of autonomous haul trucks, the haul road itself becomes all the more critical to the success of these type of operations; not only in relation to mine operators requirements for safer and more efficient and predictable haulage systems, but also in response to autonomous truck manufacturers’ requirements for a more predictable and controlled operating environment. This paper presents a brief summary of the state-of-the-art in surface mine road design and then proceeds to examine the design and technological challenges associated providing a safe, predictable and affordable road for autonomous mine haul trucks. The paper serves as a basis for evaluating the contributions that enhancements in road design and management can deliver to autonomous mining operations, an initiative that also has scope for adoption within the operating life of many mines, haul roads and haul trucks.

Optimisation of the underground mining production process benefits from informed decision making during the process of explosive rock fragmentation. Selection of the most appropriate bulk explosive products for underground production blasting is an area of endeavour that offers significant economic upside if correctly and thoroughly undertaken. The explosive selection process is facilitated by a clear understanding of:the physical and detonic properties of the alternative explosive options available; the response of different rock masses to these different explosive options; and the importance of maintaining a clear focus on desirable blast outcomes in order to enhance value creation aspects of the mining production process. The level of understanding of these issues is raised through the application of measurement and modelling technology, quantifying the effects of blast design (and implementation) on process outcomes. Homestake Darlot and DynoConsult applied a range of dynamic blast measurement and outcome modelling techniques in order to explore the relationship between rock properties, explosive properties and mining process efficiencies. A campaign of vibration and explosive Velocity of Detonation (VoD) measurement produced feed data for use in vibration and fragmentation modelling during the extraction of one of the major stoping blocks at Darlot Gold Mine. The paper describes the use of these tools and discusses the understanding gained concerning the limitations and capabilities of, and the reconciliation between, a selection of analysis and modelling approaches.

The theme of this conference is blasting productivity. This article only considers the technology aspect of this theme, and in particular, the collection and analysis of experimental data. In many cases, field trials are set up to collect data on variables such as fragmentation and vibration with the aim of comparing different explosive products and/or blast designs. An important aspect of such trials is the collection of sufficient data to draw sound conclusions. In this regard, there is no doubt that the scatter in real data is the root cause of all problems of obtaining misleading results due to an insufficient number of trials. This article shows that the typical one-off trial has a high probability of producing misleading information, which could be considered to be worse than having no information at all. Assuming that sufficient data has been collected, this article also highlights the methods that can be used to make the most of that data. These methods include the application of appropriate statistics that are dependent on the nature of the scatter in the data, and the use of some of the more recent filtering and spectral approaches that can be used to reduce the noise in measured blast signals and increase the resolution of their spectral characteristics.

Mobile mining equipment presents only a small portion (ten per cent mining project costs but the selected technology will determine to a large extent the mining performance and mine profitability. The actual performance of the selected mobile equipment technology will rely on the support functions, infrastructure, user interface and user acceptance. Optimising the technology to match the circumstances is an increasingly important phase in a mine feasibility study. Smartly done feasibility studies include the possible future needs of changing or building-up of the selected technology. In massive mining applications the machinery faces quite different challenges than in selective or small-scale mining applications. In massive mining applications the efficient and continuous move of large amounts of material has led to the use of increasing degree of automation. This higher degree of automation in a mining application, on the other hand, will be best applied to a smooth and streamlined mining process and operation. Mining methods like block caving support automated operation. Automated mobile equipment needs supportive infrastructure, monitoring and information transfer systems as well as well established working procedures. Too often the user interface and human factor is disregarded during the consideration of automation. Through the available supplier programming tools it is possible to see how much the selected technology provides flexibility in changing production or economical situations, when major rebuilds or replacements are necessary, and view the effects of all these on the mine economy. When adequate technology is available from various sources, the difference becomes from preparing for the future, managing costs and combining the best layout with the most suitable technological solutions.

The Wark has been conducting collaborative research through the AMIRA International P260 series of projects for over 20 years. This paper reviews specific outcomes of successful technology transfer to flotation plant practice over that time. Moreover, findings of an independent audit of industry users of the research outcomes of the P260 project are reviewed. The key to successful technology transfer is the active engagement of industry personnel at all phases of the technology transfer process. Other research outcomes include the novel application of new measurement tools and methodologies which include, for example, advanced surface analysis techniques. These new tools and methodologies have been pivotal to improving our understanding of factors that limit the flotation separation of minerals at plant scale. Future potential targets for technology transfer to improve flotation plant practice are discussed.
