While water represents a major proportion of the mineral pulp processed in flotation circuits, relatively little research effort has been committed to understanding and controlling the influence of water quality on this process. Historically, this probably stems from the perception of water as an inert transport medium. However, the changing attitude towards water as a valuable resource, has given impetus to increasing requirements to use relatively impure make-up water supplies such as treated effluents and a high proportion of internally recycled water. In turn, this has resulted in the need for a more detailed focus on process water quality and its control to minimise adverse effects on sulfide flotation. Along these lines, prior to commissioning of a new concentrator at their Cadia Hill Gold Mine, Newcrest Mining was proactive in examining potential water sources and the influence of water quality on flotation of their copper/gold bearing ore. An extensive water quality survey of all major potential water supplies to the concentrator was undertaken. The flotation performance of the Cadia ore in each of these waters was investigated on a laboratory scale. The results of these studies identified that water quality could indeed have a significant influence on the flotation process. Since operations at the Cadia Hill concentrator began, water quality surveys of both make-up water sources and recycled flotation circuit waters have been carried out on a regular basis. By doing this, a database of water quality has been established which can be compared with plant performance. In parallel with the water quality surveys, a series of laboratory flotation tests have been conducted using a standard ore and waters from various streams to monitor changes in flotation performance as a function of water quality. These tests have indicated that certain water types may have a significant influence on plant performance. More research is required to better understand the impact of water quality on sulfide flotation. This understanding will help operators to minimise adverse effects, while maintaining the best utilisation of available water resources.

In reviewing recent developments in the process mineralogy of gold it is convenient to distinguish between visible (>0.1 pm) and invisible gold (1 - 2 pm in size in polished section; these can scan the surface of a polished section, identifying the gold minerals, recording co-ordinates of the grains for subsequent examination, and making measurements of areas and sizes of the grains. However, problems of sample reliresentivity in polished section mean that such data may not give good quantification of gold mineral proportions and liberation/locking characteristics and other methods are required for this (amalgamation, cyanidation, ultra-fine milling and cyanidation). Characterisation of invisible gold in bulk material (eg a sulphide concentrate) can be done by mineral separation, ultra-fine milling and cyanidation or by quantitative point analyses of a large number of mineral grains. Analytical methods include electron microprobe analysis (detection limit normally -200 ppm but -10 ppm by using special techniques), ion microprobe analysis (secondary ion mass spectrometry - SIMS; detection limit -0.2 ppm) or proton microprobe analysis (PIXE; detection limit

The proton microprobe is developing into a vital tool in the geosciences, through its high sensitivity for in-situ detection of trace elements in the ppm regime. This paper will describe the instrument at the CSIRO Heavy Ion Analytical Facility at North Ryde, including features crucial to its successful application in the geoscience. Examples of applications in the basic geoscience and mineral industry related research are described briefly. Conditions required for widescale applications in the minerals industry are Discussed.

Ashton Mining Limited is the operator of two wholly-owned gold mine/mill complexes at Laverton and Leonora. In addition, Ashton owns 43% of the Bardoc Joint Venture mine/mill complex, which is operated by Aberfoyle Pty Limited. All three of these operations are located in the Eastern Goldfields region of Western Australia (Figure 1). At Laverton, milling capacity is in the order of 1 million tonnes per year in 3 mills (Duketon 200,000 tpa, Cork Tree Well 650,000 tpa and Craiggiemore 150,000 tpa). These mills service a distance of 80 km, from Baneygo in the north to Craiggiemore in the south. Mineral tenements cover a 150 km long stretch of a series of sub-parallel mineralised structures. At Leonora, the Harbour Lights mill is designed to treat 750,000 tpa of sulphide ore, and has treated oxide ores at an annualised rate of over 1 million tonnes/year. The mill is supported by several tenement blocks that lie within a 50 km trucking radius of the mill. The most important of these is the Mertondale tenement block, which covers approximately 25km of the Mertondale Shear Zone.

Current low prices for many metals mean that deposits have to be mined at high cut-offs (relative to their mean grade), which means that only a small percentage of mining blocks are above cut-off. Worse, at such high cut-offs, the blocks above cut-off are usually not grouped into convenient clumps for mining; they tend to be split into small isolated patches that are difficult to reach and hence expensive to extract. Companies wishing to acquire mineral properties have to be able to work out quickly what percentage of blocks are above cut-off and what can effectively be mined given the mining method envisaged. Moreover they need this information within a relatively short-time. The work presented here relates to typical South African gold mines (ie tabular orebodies) but the long-term objective is to develop tools for quantifying the impact of reserve breakup at high cut-offs for a wide range of underground mines including those that are not tabular. The mining method and the sampling procedure determine whether ore blocks can effectively be located and extracted economically. This project studied the impact of these two factors on the recoverable reserves for Witwatersrand gold mines. In order to be repeatable, the tests were done on numerical models of the deposit obtained by geostatistical simulations. To ensure realism, the orebody model and the mining scenarios were based on a specific mine. The recoverable reserves (ore tonnage above cut-off, the corresponding metal quantity and the average grade) were calculated for a wide range of cut-offs for four mining scenarios, as well as for the base case of free selection: ò Scenario 1: Blocks are taken if their true grade is above cut-off and if they are accessible from a raiseline (no information effect, no marginal blocks). ò Scenario 2: In addition to the accessible pay blocks, adjoining marginal blocks are taken (no information effect, + marginal blocks). ò Scenario 3: Blocks are taken if their estimated grade is above cut-off and if they are accessible from a raiseline. Here the estimator is the average of the face samples (information effect, no marginal blocks): ò Scenario 4: Accessible pay blocks are taken if their estimated grade is above cut-off. Adjoining marginal blocksare also taken (information effect, + marginal blocks). ò Free selection: All blocks whose true grade is above cut-off are taken irrespective of their accessibility. The purpose of blasting during mining is to produce a muck pile that can be efficiently loaded and transported. There is an increasing awareness of the variation in muck pile characteristics and its economic implications. It is well known that good fragmentation by itself is not sufficient to optimise the muck loading efficiency. The swelling and configuration of the muck pile also significantly affect the productivity of the loading equipment. The characteristics of a muck pile depend upon the blast design parameters, explosive properties and rock mass geology. This study has focused on the dependence of muck pile configuration on blast design parameters, explosive properties and size distribution of the muck.The field work was done in two phases. In the first phase 12 blasts were monitored, while in the second, three blasts were monitored. The blast design parameters and explosive properties for each blast were documented and the following muck pile characteristics were measured:muck pile height and its distance from the facedistance of throwwidth of the power troughsize distribution by image analysis technique.The effects of burden, bench height, heave energy of explosive, row-to-row delay, powder factor and the mean particle size of the fragments on muck pile configuration were examined. It was observed that muck pile height and distance of throw are strongly influenced by the burden, bench height, heave energy of the explosive and the size distribution of the muck. The width of the power trough depends upon the row-to-row delay, powder factor and total burden. A series of laboratory blasting and ball mill grinding tests have been done on four different types of hard and competent rocks. The results show that exposing these rock types to a higher level of explosive energy will enhance their grindability. True blasting optimisation should therefore look at the whole comminution process from solid rock to a marketable product.

Structural assemblages of veins, shear zones, and wallrock alteration zones arising from fault-valve action on steep reverse fault systems are reviewed using observations from mesothermal gold-quartz lodes in the Archean Yellowknife, Abitibi, and Yilgarn greenstone belts of Canada and Western Australia, the Cretaceous Mother Lode system in the Foothills Metamorphic Belt of the western Sierra Nevada, California and the Victorian goldfield hosted in a folded quartz-turbidite succession of Paleozoic age in Australia. Despite differences in the host rock assemblages, the deposits have many structural characteristics in common. These form a useful exploration guide when re-evaluating comparable, but poorly described gold-quartz vein systems such as those in the Reefton area of New Zealand.

While the underground mining work environment may have processes and equipment considered unique, most of the broad issues likely to affect the occupational health and safety of employees are not. One such occupational health and safety issue that is common to the mining sector and most other industries is noise. Noise as an occupational health and safety issue is of national significance. Presently noise induced hearing loss costs Australia around $35 million per year on compensation claims experience alone. Noisy equipment and work environments are still being tolerated in parts of the mining industry as `part of the job'. Where work has been undertaken in noise management, considerable emphasis has been placed on either industrial hygiene monitoring programs or the provision of hearing protectors to miners working on or around noisy equipment.Opportunities for more cost-effective and long term methods for controlling noise exist. Ready to apply solutions to noise problems in the mining industry are available, but for many mining operators this information is often difficult to obtain. To overcome this problem, the SHARE program collects and distributes solutions to occupational health and safety problems. The program aims to help organisations to close the gap between what is known about solving health and safety problems and what is actually being applied at the shop floor level: Recent developments have incorporated the SHARE program concept into worksite hazard management projects that involve the participation of employee representatives, front line supervisors and engineering personnel. Besides providing workforce members with an increased understanding of hazard management skills, the SHARE in-house program results in the implementation and sharing of solutions to health and safety problems by the program participants.

Although forty-seven years have passed since the by-product coke oven made its successful commercial appearance, it is only during the past fifteen or twenty years that this system of coal carbonisation has advanced rapidly to its present position ofabsolute supremacy.Early designs of by-product ovens proved more or less faulty, and the coke produced was so inferior to coke made in beehive ovens that there was a natural hesitancy on the part of coke producers to invest large sums of money in installations of by-productovens of doubtful utility-more especially in view of the fact that beehive ovens could be erected cheaply and operated by non technical labour for the production of high-grade coke under the most variable conditions of trade.Surely and steadily designers brought forward by-product ovens of improved type, coupled with more efficient apparatus for the recovery of by-products, but still the industry lagged, due almost entirely to the insistence on the part of coke users that the qualityof ordinary beehive coke was vastly superior for metallurgical operations to the best coke produced from by-product ovens. So deep rooted was this prejudice that only the passage of time could eradicate it. That it has successfully done so is strikingly illustratedin the following statistics:

The Early Proterozioc Pine Creek Geosyncline hosts a large number of gold showings. Mineralisation types include stratiform, synsedimentary deposits within iron formation and carbonaceous mudstone; disseminations in granophyric intrusives; and quartz vein related concentrations in the form of shear fillings, saddle reefs and stockworks. Stratiform gold deposits preferentially formed near penecontemporareous faults during periods of basin instability. Intrusive basic magmas later assimilated some stratiform mineralisation and subsequently redeposited it within differentiated phases. Gold was again remobilized during regional deformation and metamorphism. Stratiform mineralisation was upgraded insitu in high strain zones and gold was mobilized into metamorphic fluids. Fluid induced fracturing during prograde metamorphism and later uplift caused the deposition of extensive gold rich vein systems. The genetic relationship between gold deposit types is reflected in the clustering of showings along regional anticlines, and provides a powerful exploration tool. The large volume of 'exhalative'òmaterial in the Geosyncline with elevated gold content suggests significant economic stratiform mineralisation may be present, and probably provides a source for later disseminated and vein deposits.

Longwall mining in Australia is approaching maturity. Longwall production from 'state of the art' Australian longwall mines now rivals similar US based longwall operations. Regrettably however, Australian gate road development rates in general fall short of the required development to longwall production ratios that are required to sustain annual longwall production capabilities. By contrast, most US based longwall mines achieve the required development to longwall production ratios to sustain their longwalls. This is despite many having to drive three heading longwall panel gate headings to meet regulatory requirements.

New Zealand Steel Mining Limited operates two independent sand mining operations on the West Coast of the North Island of New Zealand. (Fig. 1)Waikato North Head 30km south of Auckland supplies ironsand concentrate as the raw feed for New Zealand Steel's works at Glenbrook, and Taharoa 70km further south, exports ironsand concentrate to Japan. Taharoa uses two sets of six low pressure Warman centrifugal pumps in series to load bulk ore carriers 3km off shore through two underwater pipelines.Waikato North Head delivers the ironsand to Glenbrook l8kms through a 200mm ID buried pipeline using two stages of high pressure positive displacement (HPPD) pumping.A high level of operating and maintenance expertise has been developed since commissioning the two systems which are proving to be reliable, efficient and of minimal impact environmentally.

BHP-Utah Coal Limited's Peak Downs Mine is located in Cen- tral Queensland, approximately 200 km south west of Mackay. The annual raw coal production of the mine is over 8 million tpa, requiring the removal of about 40 million cubic metres of prime overburden. This is achieved through the use of five large draglines. The large depths of overburden (up to 55 metres) encountered over half the strike length of the mine enables cast blasting to be carried out in conjunction with draglines employ- ing the chopping method of digging. The objective of cast blast- ing is to use explosive energy to move as much material directly into spoil as possible. The additional costs of drilling and blast- ing are offset by reducing dragline rehandle. Two factors which are of primary importance to the design of cast blasts are initiation control and material velocity. High speed motion picture photography is a powerful diagnostic tool to quantify these aspects of blasting (Winzer, Montenyohl and Ritter, 1979; Chiappetta et al., 1983; Anon., 1983). The objec- tives of such analysis are to: 1. Determine the burden velocity, 2. Determine the time to initial movement (that is, the inter- val between a face hole firing and the initial movement of the burden), 3. Check the accuracy of the initiation sequence. BHP Central Research Laboratories (CRL) and Peak Downs Mine monitored a cast blast in the mine's Winchester Pit on 18 August, 1988. The objectives of this exercise were to: 1. Quantify current cast blast performance, providing a base case for comparison with modified blast design. 2. Compare two orientations of angled holes within the blast. 3. Assess the effectiveness of cast blasting utilising an air-deck. 4. Check blast timing with respect to burden movement times.

One of the biggest drawbacks of deciding upon a heap leach method of treating gold ore is the risk associated with the full-scale production heaps not performing as predicted by the testwork. This paper examines the key decisions that are taken in the design of a heap leach project, and suggests ways in which exposure to these risks can be minimised. It also looks at monitoring techniques to give early warning of problems and possible remedial actions.

A form of wet pelletization is described where the bridging of the individual particles is achieved by a second liquid phase that pref- erentially wets the suspended solid particles. The phenomenon can be used to obtain efficient separation of solids from carrier liquids, to form spheres from finely divided solid materials, and to separate selected constituents from a body of mixed solids. Typical examples of each of these applications are presented.

Over a four-hour period of steady plant operation samples were taken at regular intervals from points within the grinding and flotation circuits. Size fractions of each composite sample were analysed for lead and zinc values and a comparison made of the behaviour of the lead, zinc and gangue minerals, size by size throughout the whole circuit. Analysis of the breakage behaviour using dynamic mathematical models gave the rates of breakage of each size fraction of each main component. Simulated grinding experiments showed that the main grinding circuit had sane reserve capacity. In the lead flotation circuit all lead values between 150 mesh (Tyler) and 5 microns had excellent flotation characteristics, and a major proportion had a high rate of flotation which was practically the same for all sizes. Increase in overall lead recovery would require improvement of the flotation behaviour of ultra-fine lead minerals. These were slow floating and were responsible for approximately half the lead losses in the final zinc concentrate and one third of the lead losses in the final tails.
